Hey there, everybody.
Welcome on in to a Friday installment of the Lockdown Patriots podcast.
Mark Schofield back in the big chair for today, Friday, March 8th, 2019.
Going to do a quick show.
I know I said I was going to talk about sort of the week in review, but we did have a little
bit of news that I wanted to make sure I covered. So we're going to talk about that and
talk about implications that that might have league wide. And we're going to speculate on what a move
like this might mean for how some team or at least one team in particular is viewing this 2019 draft
class. But before we do any of that, a reminder to follow me on Twitter at Mark Schofield. Check
out the work at places like InsideThePylon.com,
Pro Football Weekly, The Score,
Matt Waldman's Rookie Scouting Portfolio,
and of course a host of SB Nation websites.
You've got Big Blue View, you've got Pat's Pulpit,
and you've got Bleeding Green Nation and the QB Scope Show,
which I host or co-host with the great Michael Kist.
So let's get into a bit of news which broke on thursday evening and strangely enough i have been
out there saying that the first quarterback domino that would fall would be nick falls
probably to the jacksonville jaguars and i continue to be mistaken about that assumption
because the first domino that fell was joe flacco to the denver broncos which
caused us all to wonder about the future of Case Keenum
in Denver. What happens next is we have the news that broke on Thursday afternoon. It started with
Ian Rappaport in a tweet. Sources that Redskins and Broncos are working a trade for quarterback
Case Keenum to land in Washington. Issues to work out, but both sides are motivated to make this
happen. Then you have Mike Kills out in Denver. Broncos have trade parameters with Washington for quarterback
Case Keenum. Broncos get Washington sixth in 2020. Washington gets Broncos seventh in 2020
per source. Keenum's contract reworked. Broncos pay him a $500,000 restructure bonus and pay $3.5 of his $7 million salary. Washington pays $3.5 million.
Following up, more from Ian Rappaport.
Broncos traded quarterback Case Keenum to the Redskins,
solving two key issues and eliminating one top quarterback landing spot.
The Redskins will acquire Case Keenum,
swapping sixth and seventh round picks.
So that's kind of the next domino that falls.
And strangely enough, the big name is still out there.
At least Nick Foles on the free agency market.
McKay's kingdom has moved.
Joe Flacco has moved.
Denver and Washington seem to be at least addressing partly their quarterback issues.
Arthur Arkhurst over at Pro Football Weekly,
one of my colleagues,
basically put this out and summed it up this way.
So basically, Washington traded for Alex Smith to replace Kirk Cousins,
who replaced Case Keenum,
who replaced Trevor Simeon,
who replaced Case Keenum,
who replaces Alex Smith.
Say that 10 times fast.
So what does this tell us about the Washington Redskins,
their quarterback position,
and perhaps how teams are viewing the quarterback market
in this quarterback draft class?
Because we all kind of assumed that Washington might be in on one of the quarterbacks,
whether it was at 14.
Maybe they would sit there at 14 and take a Daniel Jones.
If Daniel Jones was going to fall to them,
maybe they would address it later in the draft
because the Redskins, maybe they would look at it and say,
okay, we've got Case Keenum in place.
We've at least got somebody to address things that way.
If at 46 a Daniel Jones falls to us or a Will Greer falls to us
or a Jarrett Stidham is there, maybe we do something like that.
Instead, they go and get Case Keenum,
and the word is that Washington is going to look at this as a camp battle
between Colt McCoy and Case Keenum for the starting job.
Does this preclude Washington from still drafting somebody?
Maybe not, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to imagine Washington
drafting somebody early.
And let's think about this from a camp perspective right now.
Washington now has three quarterbacks under contract for the 2019 season.
You've got Alex Smith with a base salary of $15 million, all of which is guaranteed.
You've got Colt McCoy with a base salary of $3 million, $2 million of which is guaranteed. And now you add Case Keenum into that mix,
apparently with this $3.5 million number,
which the Redskins are supposed to pay,
at least by my understanding of things.
So that's nearly $20 million wrapped up in three quarterbacks,
one of whom might not see the field.
And perhaps if Alex Smith gets an injury declaration,
they might be able to rework that somehow.
And if that is the situation, maybe they would still bring somebody in.
But you've got a limited amount of time to figure that out.
And maybe they already know that they've been told by their doctors that Smith is not going to be able to come back this year.
And so maybe they're already headed in that direction. But as of right now, they've got, like I said, just about $20 million
or actually over $20 million tied up in three quarterbacks, one of whom might not see the field.
The other two are Case Keenum and Colt McCoy. So that is an interesting situation. What's also
interesting is perhaps rather than explore a Josh Rosen trade,
and he would have been cheaper than Case Keenum,
or draft one of these guys who might have been cheaper than Case Keenum,
they went out and got Case Keenum.
Now, does that tell us something about Washington?
And or does that tell us something on a more global scale
about how the league is viewing Rosen and this draft class?
And maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.
Maybe it's Washington specific.
Maybe we shouldn't read too much into this one move.
But I had sort of heard through the grapevine, heard through the tea leaves that perhaps Washington was sniffing around Josh Rosen.
Maybe that's not the case at all.
You know, maybe all this Rosen stuff is all smokescreens.
It really truly is line season.
But we now face a situation where Keenum is moving to the NMC East.
Josh Rosen isn't.
Maybe one of these draft quarterbacks isn't.
And this move might take Washington out of that first round mix for a quarterback.
And in the past couple of days, I think we've all been sort of under the working assumption that we're going to see two quarterbacks go as early as the top six picks.
You figure Murray at one, Haskins at six to the Giants, right?
And matter of fact, on the radio yesterday, on Thursday, I said we'd probably see two in the first three because I was starting to envision a scenario where you get Murray at one
and then you get at the Jets at three.
They trade down.
Somebody comes up to get ahead of Oakland and New York
and maybe even Jacksonville to go get their quarterback,
whether it's Haskins or perhaps even Drew Locke.
Well, now if we assume that Jacksonville will be out of a quarterback race
because they're going to hand on to Nick Foles,
and if we think that Washington with this move
is probably taking themselves out of the quarterback race
in at least the first round,
that widows down the number of teams.
And maybe Denver, seeing this landscape,
if it's Drew Locke that they truly like,
maybe they don't feel like they need to move up.
And so this quarterback market and the quarterback landscape
seems to be shifting underneath our feet as we speak.
And again, it is lion season.
We don't know anything right now.
We know nothing, John Snows.
Maybe this is all still smoke screens. Maybe Denver comes up to go get a guy. Maybe Washington still goes early on a
guy. Maybe a team surprises us. We were all kind of surprised. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City
team, we thought Kansas City might take a quarterback, but we were surprised when they
went and got him. So every year there's usually a team that kind of comes out of nowhere
to address the quarterback position.
And it still might happen.
You look at some teams like, say, Cincinnati that might be in the mix.
A dark horse would be, say, a Detroit.
You wonder about the Matthew Stafford situation.
I think they're still going to ride him out for a couple of years.
But stranger things have happened.
So it will be interesting to watch how these quarterback dominoes continue to move.
We might see some more dominoes sort of hit today.
We might get some Odell news.
We might get some Antonio Brown news.
We might get some Nick Foles confirmation.
So if something sort of breaks and it's big, I will hop on for an emergency podcast.
Before we go, because again, this is going to be just a quick show,
I did want to mention we got potentially some veteran on veteran
in terms of covering the league, veteran on veteran crime here,
about to break down on the timeline
because we all know the Charlie Casterly stuff.
I've talked about it here.
I talked about it on the QB Scosio with the great Michael Kist.
He was talking about Kyler Murray.
Well, Gil Brandt, who was just enshrined
or is about to be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, tweeted out on Thursday evening about this Kyler Murray. Well, Gil Brandt, who was just enshrined or is about to be enshrined into the Pro Football
Hall of Fame, tweeted out on Thursday evening about this Kyler Murray situation.
One, only one team put him in front of the whiteboard.
Gee, I wonder what team that was.
Probably not Cleveland.
Two, the questions about leadership, study habits run counter to my experience with Kyler,
who I've known since he was a high school sophomore, have known his dad for 30 years.
And here's the kicker.
Honestly, it all sounds fabricated.
So let's recap for a moment the last, say, 72 hours for Charlie Cashley.
Because he comes up with the Kyler Murray stuff.
Then Kevin Burkhardt hits him with the 1-2-3 combo of,
in his statements, which I read yesterday, the Heath Shuler reference, the 18-46 record reference,
and then finishes him off with a Bill Belichick, he's been wrong more than a meteorologist
reference. And now you've got Gil Brandt basically saying it all sounds made up. Honestly,
it all sounds fabricated. Those are the direct words. That's a rough stretch for Charlie Casterly.
Maybe he is right here.
But as we've all speculated, and I've speculated here and other places,
including on yesterday's show, maybe somebody is feeding him something.
Especially if part of Charlie Casterly's argument was
he struggled in whiteboard situations.
Gil Brandt saying only one team put him on the whiteboard,
and the team that probably did that,
reading between the lines here,
would be the Arizona Cardinals,
wondering how well he would know
Lincoln Riley slash Cliff Kingsbury's style of offense.
And they're apparently the team
that is willing to take him first overall.
What are we doing out here, kids?
Sometimes I just don't know. so that will do it for today
like i said quick show little one segment hitter type of thing if anything breaks with antonio or
odell or anything else i will hop on the mic i will be in and around the home office working
today so if something does break i will let you know otherwise i will be back on monday with
another mock draft monday version 4.0.
Until then, have a fantastic weekend, everybody.
We are back to five shows a week.
Quick ones on Friday.
More as news breaks and as news warrants.
It's a need-to-know situation.
And if you guys need to know,
I will hop on the microphone to drop some takes.
Until then, have a fantastic weekend
