Also, as you heard, today's show brought to you by our friends at mybookie.ag.
Hope you listened to me on Friday.
I said, take the Jets and the points, nine and a half.
Jets cover that.
I said, take the under, divisional game.
I'm expecting this to be a close defensive game.
Hit that as well.
Hope you go out over to mybookie.ag.

Also, don't forget,
lockedonpatriots.com.
Check that out as well.
There will be some articles up
probably by the time you're listening to this
about snap counts,
about some of the plays we saw
Sunday afternoon. Lots to dive
into.
So lots to dive
into here and obviously top line
story, Patriots get out
of MetLife Stadium with the
seven point victory and
at the start it didn't look like
it was going to be New England's day.
As we do for a lot of these games, we're going to do a little great, good, and bad here.
We'll start with the bad, and we'll start with that defense
and the way this Patriots defense started this game.
This was not a great start for them.
Jets take the opening kickoff, go right down the field.
13 plays, 88 yards, take five minutes off the clock.
You get a touchdown pass from Josh McCown to Austin Safarian Jenkins, one yard touchdown
on that play.
Look, linebacker slips in coverage, physically slipped, you know, and that was the issue
there.
McCown had time on this play.
Austin Safarian Jenkins was wide open because the linebacker just physically slipped.
And sometimes that happens.
But obviously, we saw early on this drive,
Jets went after Malcolm Butler early.
You get a third down play.
Big play from McCown to Robbie Anderson for the 23 yards
where they go after Butler.
Play before that, second down, they go after Butler again.
Butler recovers on that play to prevent the completion.
But two out of their first three passes,
they went after Malcolm Butler.
So again, Jets go up early, 7-0.
Patriots get the ball.
Eight plays, drive stalls at the Jets' 41-yard line.
They're forced to punt.
Defense comes back on the field.
They force a three and out.
So you're thinking, okay, things have settled down.
Patriots' next drive.
Mike Gilleslie puts it on the turf.
After a five-yard run on first down.
We're going to talk about New England running on first down in a second.
But Gilleslie puts it on the turf.
Patriots give up the ball.
Jets get it back.
Seven plays, 78 yards.
Three minutes off the clock.
Another touchdown.
14-0 Jets early in the second quarter.
And on that drive again, they went after Butler.
McCown hits Curley on a deep crossing route.
Just an easy crossing route against Butler.
Touchdown.
14-0 on the road.
Not looking good.
The defense got off to a bad start.
But they locked it down from there.
We're going to talk about what this defense did after that second touchdown drive, because you want to talk about a great performance? That was a great performance.
Yeah, there was a controversial call, which we'll dive into a little bit.
But Patriots, that defense
made the plays
that allowed New England to get back
into this game.
But it was a bad start.
And they went after Butler early,
but he bounced back along with the rest
of the defense.
We're going to get to our great and our good from the New England Patriots,
their 24-17 victory over their rivals, the New York Jets.
But before I do, I want to remind everybody,
mybookie.ag, you want to check them out.
You're going to have a chance tonight, Monday night,
if this is when you're listening to it.
If you want to look at that Indy Tennessee game,
Marcus Mariota expected to play.
I'd look at Tennessee in that one.
But again,
we just want to remind you here
in a few seconds
about our friends over at mybookie.ag.
Hey, everybody.
Mark Schofield from Locked On Patriots.
Ever since I've been in the podcast business,
people have been coming to me for advice. Usually, it's questions like this. Hey, who do you got this weekend? Pats or Jets?
What should I do in the Texans versus Raiders game? Hit the over or hit the under? And I've
been trying to give you some good advice each Friday on what I think when it comes to the
Pats games. But let me give you some other good advice. Use our friends over at mybookie.ag
because sometimes the best advice you can get
is not who to bet on, but where to place your bets. When you go there, use promo code LOCKEDON.
Here's why. They will match you dollar for dollar, 100% up to your first $1,000. They're not the only
sports book in the game, and I know this, but here's why they get my endorsement. Again, they have that great 100% cash bonus up to your first thousand dollars. But here's the other
reason. They've been in the business for years. Their reputation is locked solid and plus fastest
payouts in the industry. Just two business days. Plus it's no different than being in a glitzy
Vegas casino. And if like me, you hate to fly, that's going to sound great to you.
Go to their website.
I'm scrolling through it right now.
They've got live in-game betting.
You can make moves on the go.
They have a great smartphone app you can use as well.
So if you forget to place your bets and you're out with your buddies getting ready for the games at your local watering hole,
pull up your phone, place your bets, take advantage of that
app as well. So again, go to mybookie.ag to place your bets and tell them I sent you by using promo
code LOCKEDON. Get over there and get the best odds anywhere. mybookie.ag. You play, you win,
you get paid. Okay, let's dive right back into it now and
we're going to do some good stuff here.
Some good stuff that I came away with
from this Patriots victory and I'm going to start with
Ryan Allen.
Allen had two pretty big
plays in this game. One was early.
Didn't really go
won't really go noticed here.
But on his first punt of the game
this is when the Patriots were
stalled on their open and drive
at the Jets 41 yard line
Belichick decides to punt in that situation
you know he downs
the Jets inside their own 5 yard
line
and the defense
comes on the field and they force a 3 and 0
and at that point in the game,
that was a pretty good play, pretty big play,
because it completely flipped field position.
You know, the Patriots,
after their defense forces that three and out,
New England gets the ball back on their own 47-yard line.
Amendola fields a punt, loses a yard on the return.
But again, you're starting near midfield.
You're starting your second drive of the game down 7-0,
but you're at midfield.
That's a pretty good situation.
Gillis Lee, then, lays the ball on the turf.
Obviously something to watch going forward,
but Allen's first punt of the day was a big one.
He had a punt later in the game.
Which was big as well. And that was his last punt of the game. New England's drive stalls. They had a chance to sort of run out the clock.
Jets kick a field goal. Patriots receive the kickoff. Jets opt not to go for the onside kick
they kick off
they figure they can stop New England
and they do
so the Patriots face a 4th and 12
with their own 15
Allen comes on to punt
and this is after a false start
so they're already backed up five yards.
Allen gets off a good punt.
It's covered well.
We get an illegal block above the waist.
Ten-yard penalty against the Jets.
So they're forced to take over at their own 27.
And that was a big play at that moment too
because Jets have a chance now.
They've got two minutes.
They've got one timeout.
They've got the two-minute warning.
They could go down and tie the game.
So every yard you make them go, every extra yard you make them go is huge.
So big punt, big penalty, that helps New England.
Let's talk about Tom Brady for a second.
Let's talk about Brady's day because there were some mistakes.
Forced some throws into coverage.
That interception that he threw to Hogan on a post route.
Forced that throw into double coverage.
And did you notice what concept they ran on that play?
You might recognize it when I say it if If you've been listening to the show.
If you've been reading LockedOnPatriots.com.
Yankee concept.
It was a Yankee concept.
It was a second and ten.
They showed run.
Excuse me.
Throw was to Philip Dorsett.
Excuse me.
It was to Dorsett.
Not Hogan.
He had forced a throw earlier to Hogan in coverage.
This one was to Dorsett, but it was the Yankee concept.
Dorsett was running that deep post route that we've talked about.
Brandon Cooks was running that shallow crosser that we talked about
and watching it live and then on the replay,
it sure looked to me like Cooks was open underneath,
like he has been a lot this season, like they've hit on a lot this season.
But Brady missed that one.
Forced it into coverage. Might have been a situation
where, look, you're down
14-7 at that point.
Your defense just forced another three and out.
Maybe your eyes get a little
bit too big in that situation. You force
one into coverage. Okay. It's a mistake.
But again, Yankee
concept. If you've been listening to the show,
you've heard me talk about it.
He had Cooks there, I think.
There were some other throws
that I think he'd like back too.
He missed one to Hogan
that was a little bit high.
Hogan got banged up on that play,
came off the field for a bit.
There were some other plays
in this game as well
where
Kony Ealy had a couple of tips off the edge there. you know, there were some other plays in this game as well where,
you know, Kony Ealy had a couple of tips off the edge there in some interesting situations.
You know, that drive where Gostowski ended up missing a field goal,
that was an interesting series of plays where it's 14-7 again.
Defense forces another 3-0.
You open the drive
you hit Danny Amendola on a post route
attacks on a pass interference penalty as well
now the Patriots have first and 10
at the Jets 29 yard line
they're down 14-7 here
and then you go
an overthrow to Hogan
on a go route where he misses it
incompletion to Gronkowski on a go route where he misses it. Incompletion to Gronkowski on a seam route.
Then he tries to throw to Brandon Cooks on an out route
and gets tipped by Coney Ealy.
It falls incomplete.
Patriots have a first and 10 on the 29-yard line.
They have to settle for a field goal try
and Gronkowski misses it.
So that was a pretty big sequence at that time.
I thought at that moment it might come back to bite New England.
It doesn't.
Things go their way at the end of the game,
particularly in the second half.
But at that moment, it looked like a big sequence.
Brady missed fire on a couple of those throws too.
But on the whole, this was another solid performance from Tom Brady.
And what really stood out to me watching Brady today,
as somebody that studies quarterbacks,
as somebody that watches quarterbacks,
his movement in the pocket.
Brady finishes 20 of 38, 257, two touchdowns, one interception. But the way he moves in the pocket,
the way he slides around in the pocket,
even their first possession,
they didn't come away with points,
but has a slant route on 36,
slides around, moves around well,
makes a good throw.
The touchdown to Gronkowski,
the second one,
again, slides around well,
buys himself time.
So when you watch Brady,
if you haven't noticed,
you should watch the way he moves in the pocket
because nobody would say that Tom Brady
is an incredible athlete.
If you're talking about
the way quarterbacks can be mobile, like a
Deshaun Watson.
But watch the way
Brady buys himself time in the pocket.
Particularly in a year when they've struggled protecting him,
when he's getting beat up, the way he can move around
in the pocket is tremendous and it will
really help this
offense going forward, the way he does that.
Rob Gronkowski, big day from him.
Obviously he missed last week, comes out.
Six catches for 83 yards on 10 targets,
two touchdowns.
Catches the first one on sort of a switch smash concept
where he's in a wing, runs a flat route,
and Kevin Hogan's on the outside.
He ducks inside what looks to be like a slant,
looks to be like slant flat, which we'll talk about
because we talked about slant flat in the Jets.
But then Hogan breaks back to the corner.
But Gronkowski's open and he hits him.
And the touchdown, it was on a crossing route and looking at it live, it looked like it
might've been levels. I'd have to go back and look at the all 22 to verify that, but it looked like
it was levels. He's running that intermediate dig route. I told you they'd run that. I'm going to
really take a victory lap if I go back and look at the All-22
and that was levels.
But I think it was.
So big game from Gronk.
Brandon Cooks.
You know, he and Brady,
you know, there were a couple of plays
that they didn't make,
a couple of opportunities
that were missed maybe.
But if
not, if for no other reason, that 42-yard reception near the end of the first half,
that was an extraordinary play. The over-the-shoulder catch, the ability to track the
football like that, that is a skill, that is a trait that scouts, evaluators, people on draft,
Twitter, everybody that studies the wide receiver position, they look for that. The ability to track
the ball over your shoulder because it is insanely difficult to do that. And it's even tougher to do
that along the sideline when you've got to get both feet down in bounds. Cooks with an incredible
individual effort on that play. That was a huge play.
Set it up.
Gronkowski's first touchdown.
Because again, New England had just missed the field goal.
But their defense, as we're going to talk about,
got them back into position before the half
to tack on one last drive.
That was on an interception.
Malcolm Butler with a big play there.
Gives New England a chance to go down the field late in the first half
and score, and that's exactly what they did.
So Brandon Cooks, huge play there, huge play in that spot.
Big day for him too.
Obviously the 42-yard catch, but six receptions for 93 yards on nine targets.
That 42-yarder was a huge one in that spot.
Deion Lewis.
Big shout-out to Deion Lewis here.
11 carries for 52 yards.
Had the one touchdown run.
That was a short run.
Did some big things for New England.
Did some things in the pass protection realm as well.
If you watch this game, you saw Lewis doing some chipping on the edge,
helping out Nate Solder.
Again, something we talked about.
Something I said to look for.
Something I wrote about over at LockedOnPatriots.com.
So hats off to Deion Lewis there as well.
Big effort from him.
Final thing I want to mention.
Final thing that I thought was really good from New England
in this game and
forced me to do some math.
I don't like doing math, but I'll do it for my friends
here.
New England Patriots on
first down run in the football. Did you
notice that? Did you notice how generally
effective they were running the ball on first downs?
I went back, went through my chart,
and went through the box score,
went through the play-by-play.
And unless my math is wrong,
I don't think it is because it wasn't that hard to do this.
16 first down rushing attempts,
not counting any kneel downs or anything like that.
For 73 yards, one touchdown. We also did get the Mike Yosley fumble that came on a first down
rushing attempt. But again, 16 rushing attempts for 73 yards, one touchdown, one fumble. That's
an average of 4.56 yards per play. When you're getting your offense into second and five situations, running the football
on first down, that's a tremendous job from the entire offense. That's a tremendous job from the
offensive line on down. Because then the entire playbook is open to you on second down. Second
and five, almost an ideal situation for an offense
if you're going to face a second down.
Obviously, second and one would be better, but still.
So a tremendous job from this Patriots running game on first downs.
I thought that was extremely important for this offense
to get back into rhythm, to get back on schedule,
to get back into this game.
But if there was anything more important
than how they ran the ball on first down
in terms of getting back into the game,
it was this.
It was the defense.
And what they did after giving up 14 points,
after giving up two touchdowns on New York's open
and three possessions. Touchdown, punt, touchdown. What did the Jets do after that offensively?
Well, not much.
After that second touchdown,
here's what the Jets did on their drives.
Punt, punt, punt, interception,
kneel down to end the first half.
As I was taking notes, as I was watching this game,
as I was breaking it all down, it seemed like every time the Patriots offense took the field,
I would write down, big drive for offense, defense just forced a punt,
defense just forced a three and out, defense just forced a turnover.
Again, after the second touchdown, Patriots defense forces,
punt, punt, punt, interception,
kneel down to end the first half.
Second half, interception on Jets open and drive.
The fumble by ASJ,
which we'll talk about here in a second.
A field goal,
and then they get off the field on downs to end the game. After giving up 14 plays,
I mean 14 points, excuse me,
over their first three defensive possessions,
they give up three over the rest of the game.
Now the ASJ fumble,
look man, I don't know.
I don't know how that got ruled the way it did.
It certainly looked like he never lost possession.
It looked like the ball was coming out, and then he secured it again.
Matt Chatham, at Chatham58.
Follow him on Twitter, former Patriots player, linebacker, and special teamer.
Look, he said it looked like the right call to him
because it looked like ASJ never fully got control
of the football again.
That's a tough call.
But
look,
if you're a Patriots fan, you remember
that play
when the Patriots played the Broncos,
when Champ Bailey picked off Tom Brady in the 2006 playoffs
and Ben Watson chased Bailey down the entire length of the field
from the other side of the field,
as somebody that lost a cell phone when that happened, because said cell phone met a wall
at an extremely high rate of velocity. Okay, maybe it wasn't that high because I don't have that
great of an arm anymore. But yes, I fired a cell phone against the wall when that happened.
Maybe this was the football gods giving us one back. I don't know.
But it got called the way it did.
So here we are.
And Patriots defense,
after those first three drives,
man, did they play well.
I mean,
you want to look at some of the individual efforts that stand out.
There's a lot.
The Butler interception was a great play at that moment.
The McCourty interception.
Again, fourth down in one situation.
They run play action, the Jets do.
Blitz off the edge.
It doesn't get there, but it pressures Josh McCown.
He forces an awkward off-balance throw. Blitz off the edge. It doesn't get there, but it pressures Josh McCown.
He forces an awkward off-balance throw.
It's off target.
McCourty comes down with the interception.
You know, that was a big sequence because the Patriots had just taken the lead.
You don't want to give them momentum back.
Don't want to give up a touchdown
to let them come back into the game.
It's their first drive of the second half.
Get off the field on fourth down
with a turnover.
Huge play.
Jets second to last
possession. It's a third and six
on the Patriots' seven-yard line.
Harmon blitzes, gets pressure on McGowan.
He's forced to check it down to the running back.
They hold
the Jets to three rather than giving
up a touchdown there.
That's a big play at that moment because with the way the game ended
with the way the game finished
you want to be in a position where
the offense, the opposition has to get a touchdown
on their final drive
if that's a 24-21 game when the Jets take over
for their final possession, who knows what happens
on the Jets final drive look, you get individual efforts from Hightower on a sack, Van Noy on
a sack.
So this defense really sort of stepped it up.
And there might be some out there that say, look, the ASJ touchdown could have changed
then, sure.
But it is what it is.
And this is how things felt.
And when it's all said and done,
divisional win on the road
against the team you were tied with
for first place.
It was a big win for New England
and
a bit of a heart-stopping one.
It wasn't an overall dominating performance
but it was a big win for the Patriots.
And now, look, it's on to Atlanta.
Atlanta giving up one late to Miami.
So, you know, obviously that's a team that's going to be
probably going to be a little hungry come next Sunday night.
We're going to start talking about Atlanta tomorrow or Tuesday,
depending on when you're listening to this.
We're going to start doing a little tape Tuesday with Atlanta.
I'm going to talk about angles,
and I know some of you are probably thinking,
oh my gosh, again, more math?
I know.
I'll keep it easy on you.
I'm going to talk about angles in the blocking game
from that Atlanta offense.
Again, anytime you can have a glorious victory show,
it's a good feeling.
Hope wherever you were at watching the game,
you enjoyed it as well.
I hope you enjoyed this little instant analysis
and recap for you.
Again, I will be back Tuesday morning
for your taped Tuesday edition of Locked On Patriots.
Starting to look at the Atlanta Falcons, what they do on offense.
Again, remember, mybookie.ag.

4-2 on to Atlanta.
It's been an interesting season so far, but 4-2 is 4-2.
Let's hope they keep it rolling.
