In the desolate depths of perilous places,
the boogeymen lurk with snarls on their faces.
Many have entered their dreary domain,
but not even one has been heard from again.
Never dare, never dare to approach their dark lair,
for they're waiting, just waiting, to get you.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
That's right, folks. It's October 31st, it's Halloween,
and I am in the Halloween spirit, and I sincerely hope that you are too.
So thank you for once again indulging my rather pedestrian sense of humor.
But for those of you that don't know, that was an excerpt from a poem by Jack Perlitzky called The Boogeyman.
And of course, it fits today's theme because one, it's Halloween.
But second, because the Patriots defense has taken on the moniker of the Boogeyman.
And they've lived up to the hype, folks.
Top-ranked defense in the league and they will need to be in top form on Sunday as
they take on what many are calling their fiercest foes so far in the Baltimore Ravens Sunday night
football safe to say this is going to be the most anticipated game of the weekend and who better to
welcome in on this Halloween Thursday to break down Patriots Ravens than my main green man Thomas
Murphy you all know him from diehardbostonsportsFans.com and the host of One Patriots Place, along
with Steve Balistrieri.
Murph is a great friend of mine.
He's a great friend of ours here on the show.
And Murph always delivers spot-on analysis and candid opinion.
And that will be no different today.
We'll get his take on Patriots Ravens.
And I'm also going to pick Murph's brain a little bit on the Patriots kicking game.
As you know, Mike Nugent has been released, Nick Folk is now the Patriots kicker, and
Murph and I have discussed the kicking game several times here on Locked On, whether it
be from Ryan Allen to Steven Gostowski to Mike Nugent, now to Nick Folk.
What are his thoughts, and will this be a potential problem for the Patriots down the
line?
I think it's a concern.
We'll find out what Murph thinks in just a moment. But first, we start with the news of the day, and there was an addition to
the Patriots injury report that was issued on Wednesday afternoon, and it included quarterback
Tom Brady and a shoulder injury. Relax, folks. From what we're hearing, it doesn't appear to be
all that serious. However, he was limited in practice on Wednesday, and that marks the second
time he's been hindered in practice this season.
If you recall, back in Week 4, a calf issue made him a limited participant then as well.
Now, any time your franchise quarterback's name shows up on an injury report, a lot of fans will tend to panic.
But I would caution you before panicking on this, folks.
Don't forget, Tom Brady is prolific, but he is 42 years old. And with the Ravens waiting in the wings this weekend,
it is entirely feasible that Bill Belichick may want Tom Brady to be as rested as possible.
Therefore, he's going to limit his workload a little bit,
maybe rest some nagging injuries or some discomfort that he might be having.
But ultimately, I look for Tom Brady to be taking snaps under center this weekend for the New England Patriots.
So as always, folks, keep an eye on practice.
Take a look at the injury reports.
But if you're going by what we saw on Sunday, Brady looked just fine during last Sunday's
win over the Cleveland Browns.
He completed 20 of 36 of his passes, threw for 259 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and
his shoulder really didn't look to be any worse for the wear.
So again, my educated guess on this one is workload
management, but we will continue to monitor it as always. And congratulations to cornerback
Stephon Gilmore, who was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for the month of October.
And this is so well-deserved, folks. Gilmore had 11 tackles, 7 passes defensed, and 2 interceptions
in the Patriots' month of October, which helped them remain 4-0 and unbeaten.
This is the second straight month that a Patriots defender has won the award.
Devin McCourty, Patriots safety, won it in September.
So once again, that secondary of the New England Patriots has been amazing, and they are being
recognized at the highest level.
So again, highest congratulations to Stephon Gilmore.
This was absolutely well-earned, folks.
And my big green friend Thomas Murphy is chomping at the bit to join us
and discuss Patriots, Ravens, and anything and everything New England Patriots,
and he will do so in just a moment.
But first, I have a question for you.
Yes, you, listening out there.

In fact, when he shows up on my doorstep on Halloween,
costume, no costume, I give the man all the candy, and he deserves it.
He is columnist extraordinaire for diehardbostonsportsfans.com.
And along with our paisan, Steve Balistrieri, he compiles one half of the hosting tandem of One Patriots Place podcast,
which, next to Locked On Patriots, is my favorite Patriots podcast.
He is my main green man, Thomas Murphy.
Welcome back, Murph.
Happy Halloween, buddy.
Dude, happy Halloween, man.
Trick or treat.
It's fantastic.
We've got two days until the biggest showdown in the history of Patriots football,
the way you think about the way the national media, or at least of the year,
at least the way the national media is talking.
And, yeah, I've got bowls and bowls of candy here for trick-or-treaters that aren't going to come.
We get about three kids a year.
It will go to use.
Yeah, we don't get many here either.
So it's one of those things where the weather up here in the northeast, Murph, as you know,
is going to be a little bit of a mixed bag.
We're expecting some heavy winds.
So that may deter some of the trick-or-treaters, but you know what?
It's all good. Halloween, we're
in the mood right now, my friend.
Murph, to me, is as close
to a co-host here at Locked On Patriots
as it gets, and you all know
we're good friends. We love talking Patriots
football, and I look for any
excuse to be able to talk Patriots football, or
really any subject with this man, but
the reason why I love having Murph join me is that his analysis,
his predictions are very seldom wrong and usually right.
And it makes the show that much better.
So the wisdom and counsel meter when you're here, my friend,
is always, always elevated and at the top level.
So thank you for always taking time out of your schedule to join me anytime I
watch you on the show.
Guy, when you call, I got to answer.
You know, we have too much fun.
We have too much fun, man.
Let's get into it.
We really, really do.
And, you know, Murph, prior to the season, the Patriots started only three kickers since the beginning of the Brady-Belichick era.
I'm referring to Adam Vinatieri, Stephen Gostowski, and for a brief cup of coffee there, Shane Graham.
Well, on Sunday, they're going to start their third
kicker of 2019, if you can believe
that. That's definitely, they're
equaling their total in one season that
they have in the past 20 years.
Now, we've talked about the kicking game
on here very, very often
on this show. We talked
about Ryan Allen when he was released
for the punter position,
and Jake Bailey was given the keys to the kingdom there, and how the holding can be an issue and can
contribute to that. We talked about Steven Gostowski's struggles before we really knew
about the hit and what he was dealing with physically. We talked about Mike Nugent signing,
and now Nick Falk comes in. And Murph, my question to you is,
did the Pats make the right move here in cutting Nugent
and in making Folk the guy?
I believe they did.
I called for it last week.
During the game, I took a lot of grief over it.
And it comes down to this.
It's not whether or not you miss a field goal
or hit a crossbar on an extra point in November, in October.
It's what's going to happen in January.
And this team needs to worry about what happens in January.
A lot of folks out there are scratching their heads over it again.
I have the over-under on kickers right now set at five for the year.
And I think they might still not be done.
I have no idea where Bill is beating the bushes, but I think he still is.
Personally, I like to think of Nick Folk as a former cowboy
because that's the only way I can get through it after looking at him in the just worst shade of green that exists on the face of the earth.
But he's in Patriots colors now.
He's wearing a Patriots uniform, and I wish him all the best.
I just, you know, this guy got cut from an arena team league last year, I think.
Yeah, no question about it.
Although he did set the AAF record for the
longest field goal with 55 yards, but don't forget that the AAF only played one season.
So, you know, we're looking at that. I mean, yeah, we've seen Folk, obviously. We did see
him in that shade of green, and let me tell you something, folks. My main man, Murph,
loves the color green, folks. For him to disparage the color green, you know there's got to be some deep-rooted feelings there. But we're all about positivity here on Halloween, Murph loves the color green, folks. For him to disparage the color green, you know there's got to be some
deep-rooted feelings there. But we're all about
positivity here on Halloween, Murph. We're going to
leave it at that. My
question to you is as a follow-up,
and it sounds like we're like-minded
on this, because I opened the show by saying
that there was a little bit of a
concern here with the kicking game moving
forward. Do you think this could become
a problem that
could end up being a prominent problem for the New England Patriots as they pursue the league's top
record and moving toward the playoffs as a number one seed in the AFC? I do, because we all know
that any game can turn on a kick. can you know it's it's also not the kicks that are
are made or um or missed but where they're made or missed from and and whether or not you're going
to take a shot at that 40 yarder and you're going to go for it on fourth down and end up not getting
that that two feet that you need,
that yard and a half that you need,
and setting other folks up for shorter fields than they should have.
The Patriots' punting game has kept opponents in a long drive mode
this entire season.
There have been a couple of kicks that really hasn't really landed where he wanted.
But other than that, he's been spectacular.
It filters into and it bleeds into the entire process of winning and losing.
A lot of people say outlaw kicks, outlaw kickers.
A lot of people give kickers a lot of grief. We've been
so spoiled here over
the past 18 years that we don't
understand what not having
a good kicker can do to you.
You just look around
the league and look what happened to the Bears
last year.
All you have to do is go back to see
what happened to the Bears last year
when you don't have a kicker that you can trust.
Yeah, you're absolutely right.
And 18, you know, you're looking at, you know, a number one seed,
and then all of a sudden it's a number three seed
because you didn't have a kicker that could get something through
or you're out in the divisional round because, you know,
people make a big deal about the weather last week.
I didn't think the weather was that bad at the stadium last week.
There was a little rain coming down in the first half.
But after that, it wasn't bad.
The flags on top of the goalposts weren't even moving.
And we had guys shanking stuff.
And it was just unreal.
Yeah, this could be a real issue.
Yeah, and I'm glad you made that point about the weather last week
because I was one of the ones that kind of bought into that a little bit,
seeing the game, watching how the weather was reacting in Foxborough,
watching the fans.
At that point where Nugent shanked the field goal,
the weather wasn't that bad at that point.
It was actually raining pretty lightly.
It had really, I think, let up a little bit.
The wind wasn't huge
as a factor. So, I
agree with you. I think it's a move they needed to make.
Bill Belichick reiterated that in his press
conference yesterday. Had some amusing
things to say, obviously, as
Bill always does in his Wednesday press
conferences. Just basically reiterating
the fact, well, we'll see how it goes.
We'll see what happens. So, not exactly
the vote of confidence.
If I'm Nick Falk coming in and saying,
okay, well, he wants
to see what I've got, that's what he's got.
I agree with you. I think this is
basically on a game-to-game
basis. If Falk ends up
being the guy and they pull the trigger and they hit
a pretty decent kicker
that can keep them sustained,
then I think they'll go with him.
But I think there's a very short leash,
and I think Bill will absolutely go to the well once again
if he feels that he needs to.
And he'll keep doing that until he finds someone
that he feels is reliable enough to be able to win games for him
in the postseason.
I agree.
Absolutely.
And I'm going to switch gears just a little bit now
and leave the kicking game behind,
and we're going to move on to the Baltimore Ravens.
And from your intro, it sounds like you have been aware
that the Patriots are playing, quote-unquote,
the game of the century this weekend,
and that they are playing probably the biggest regular season game
we've ever seen in the NFL.
Of course, we're being sarcastic, folks.
But the Pats are set
to battle the Ravens on Sunday night in Baltimore. And this one always makes me laugh, Murph.
Ravens tight end Nick Boyle chirped a bit yesterday. And I do want to be fair. He did say
that the Patriots are a great team and that the Ravens are going to need their A game to beat the
Patriots. But he went out of his way to say that the Patriots, first of all, their defense has not faced a quarterback like Lamar Jackson, and his lasting quote was,
we'll see how good they are once we play them.
Murph, do these guys just never learn that this is the last team that you want to taunt
and the last team that you want to provide with bulletin board material?
No, they don't.
They don't.
It's like they skipped an entire class in
college and it's just like people you don't do this you really don't um not you know first when
i heard this the first time i said to myself who's nick boyle and and then it was just like you know
i what do you expect them to say they They want to talk well about their quarterback.
But, come on, really?
The Patriots have never seen anybody like Lamar Jackson?
I mean, you know, how often do I have to hear this?
I heard this, you know, for decades.
You know, the Patriots never heard of Robert Griffin III.
The Patriots have never faced anybody like Patrick Mahomes.
The Patriots have never faced this guy, that guy, or the other guy.
This is a whole new ballgame.
Yeah, okay.
As Bill sips his orange juice and says, you know, how many dynasties have we ended?
How many quarterbacks have we, the next great thing has has this team and this
defense sent packing um no i'm not i'm not worried in the least about lamar jackson i thought it was
um uh i i didn't like him coming out of college uh he's showing me a little bit more than i
expected at this point in time in his career.
But no, Lamar Jackson does not, you know, want to send me running back into the locker room scared because, you know, oh no, Pennywise is on the freaking field.
And believe me, if it's not scaring me, it's not scaring Bill.
And it's definitely not scaring the boogeyman.
And I'm glad you mentioned the boogeymen.
How much better can we get by actually being able to mention the boogeymen on Halloween?
It's great.
I swear to God, this material writes itself sometimes.
It does.
But all kidding aside, we're going to stay on the defensive side of the ball for a second,
if you don't mind.
And the Patriots defense is going to be tested against Lamar Jackson on Sunday
because it is a little bit of a different look from what they're used to seeing.
And the Pats have been so great this year because they've had the versatility
to let their linebackers run free in the 3-4 scheme.
The line has held up well, meaning the defensive line,
and the secondary is playing at an elite level.
Now, usually the Patriots employ a zero blitz.
They use that quite a bit.
That applies to pressure. And then when they show blitz. They use that quite a bit. That applies
the pressure. And then when they show blitz and they want to confuse the team, they'll drop
seven back into coverage, and the secondary usually blankets the offensive weapons. And
they've been so effective at doing that. My question to you is, do you believe that Jackson
is too mobile to rely on this type of formation, and might we see some different looks from the Patriots this weekend?
Yeah, I do.
I think Bill will mix it up quite a bit this weekend,
but I don't think he's going to be afraid to go zero blitz.
I was a little hesitant last week when they were still running it last week
because the Browns have the personnel to beat zero blitz.
The Ravens really don't.
They really, really don't.
Outside of Jackson, they do have a fine run game,
but I don't think that they have the quick-out hot reads to work this system
the way they would need to to beat it.
So, no, I'm not worried about that.
I think the Patriots defense is going to step up and do just fine this week.
Yeah, we are going to see a few different looks to keep things confusing
and honest with Jackson and against this offense.
But, no, it's going to come down to gap integrity
and how well they're able to shut Jackson down.
Keep him in the pocket and force him to – Evan Lazar,
I've got to give him credit for this – force him to be a quarterback.
I thought that was a great line.
Force him to be a quarterback.
Now, Lazar is a
good friend of ours over at CLNS, and he said that the other day, and he's absolutely right. He's the
biggest Lamar Jackson fan on the planet. But no, force him to throw from the pocket, force him
through his reads, and that defense actually does that, makes that really difficult for a quarterback,
especially a young quarterback.
They're talking about, we haven't seen anything.
I hate when I do that, that the Patriots haven't seen anything like Lamar Jackson.
Lamar Jackson has never seen anything like this in his life.
Yeah, I completely agree with you.
I think that there's definitely an edge that the Patriots have,
especially when it comes to the Ravens trying to pass the ball
and that pass defense.
That's where they're really going to shine.
I mean, obviously, Hollywood Brown, Miles Boykin, Willie Sneed,
they have some weapons over there that might be able to give Lamar Jackson
some quick outs every now and then.
But the Patriots have been so good at blanketing these stars,
and their secondary is playing at such a high level.
Stephon Gilmore, offensive player, defensive, excuse me,
player of the month for the month of October,
and very, very well-deserved.
He's been amazing and just incredible when it comes to that.
But I think that the Patriots will be able to zero in
and even take away some of the tight end threats.
I know Aiden Hurst, the tight end for the Ravens,
has come on and played pretty well in the last couple of games.
Nick Boyle, obviously, he's going to be out there.
You can bet that the Patriots...
Nick Boyle won't catch a ball.
He's not going to catch a ball.
You can bet they're zeroing in on that guy right now
without any question and without any hesitation.
Mark Andrews is obviously their biggest weapon,
but he's had
up and down season as well, but
I think that's the key. I really,
really am glad that you mentioned
that, is that force him to be a quarterback
and again, do credit Evan
Lazar, who has been a guest here on
Locked On. You and I know Evan
very well, and he knows his stuff when it comes
to this team. We're going to
get Murph's talk on the offense in just a few moments.
And also we're going to even put him on the hot seat with probably an
unexpected question that I don't think he knows what's coming.
Don't worry, Murph.
I'm not going to put you on a bad, bad seat.
This is going to be a fun one, I promise you, to close the show here today.
So sit tight and in just a moment we'll hear Murph's take on the offense.
Once again, I am talking with Thomas Murphy of One Patriots Place
and DieHardBostonSportsFans.com.
Murph, we've been talking a lot about the Patriots' defense
and what they may do to confuse this Baltimore Ravens offense
with Lamar Jackson and runners like Mark Ingram and trying to contain them.
But ultimately, you have to put points on the board if you hope to win.
And so many are, I don't want to say being disrespectful to the Patriots offense,
but maybe I will be saying they're disrespectful to the Patriots offense
and really kind of making them out to be this pedestrian group
despite of the fact that they are putting up tons of points each and every game, with the
exception of the Buffalo game. They're coming into Baltimore, putting up some points on the board,
and their arsenal of weapons is starting to come into its own a little bit. Obviously,
Mohamed Sanu is a new target for the New England Patriots. Phillip Dorsett, Julian Edelman have both been reliable targets.
Jacoby Myers has shown flashes of being able to be a reliable target.
The return of Benjamin Watson at the tight end position gives them a little bit of versatility.
The run game hasn't been exactly what we had hoped,
and some of that's due to, I think, the injury of Rex Burkhead.
Some of it is due to the offensive line blocking
and Michelle not being able to find those holes and those seams.
The Ravens have a very good run defense, not so much against the pass.
Do you expect the Patriots to air this out and go four wide
and really spread the offense,
or do you think they're going to try to establish the run here?
No, I expect them to spread things out.
I expect them to get into 21 and 22 personnel, get some motion going,
spread things out at times, and just pick apart this Ravens defense.
They're secondary.
Their soft underbelly is definitely that secondary.
And I expect Tom to do that this week with the addition of Sanu.
It gives – people are comparing this to what Gronk did last year,
but you can't.
What it does is it gives them somebody else to think about.
They have not really had to think about anybody on the offensive side of the ball
except for James White and Julian Edelman time and again.
Yes, you mentioned the guys that have come up and made plays here and there
and moved the chains, but generally speaking, that's where the focus has been.
Now with Sanu in the equation, there's something else for the beautiful minds
to think about, and that is going to open things up.
Yes, I do see them spreading things out.
I do, but I also do see them getting a little old school.
We got some guys here who can play tight end.
We mentioned the fact that this is coming back.
I mean, Lacoste is coming back.
That's going to allow them to do more things on that side of the ball with personnel, with getting into 21, getting into 22,
using those bedrock Patriots formations
that move the chains and put points up.
Yeah, definitely.
And I'm glad that you mentioned Lacoste in the tight end position
because it's been so maligned throughout the narrative
of the 2019 New England Patriots
that, oh, the tight ends are nonexistent now, and they miss Gronk.
And I talked about this a little bit when I spoke with Kevin Ostreicher of Locked on Ravens yesterday
on a crossover show.
Yeah, you're missing Rob Gronkowski.
You're never going to replicate Rob Gronkowski,
but it doesn't mean that you can't get the production that you need.
And Lacoste has been injured, but he's a solid player.
I think he can give you more than what you've seen so far with him.
So him coming back, I think, will be a good addition.
Some people were surprised that they cut loose Eric Tomlinson.
I was not surprised by that.
Even though he did show a little bit of flash in being able to block a little,
but maybe even line up at the fullback position,
but I think they had other needs.
And that leads me into my final question this week for you,
before the big major question that's going to put you on the hot seat, my friend.
Probability in your mind, do we see Nikhil Harry on the field this weekend?
It's 50-50 right now.
I'm not sure what Bill is thinking.
If I knew what Bill was thinking, you know,
I'd be making a lot more money than I do.
But the probability is 50-50.
I'm really not sure if they're comfortable.
Because while he was out, he could not work out with the team.
He couldn't.
You can go to meetings.
You can read your playbook, but you're not out there on the field
or even running things with the practice squad.
You're just sitting around.
You're riding a bike somewhere.
You're rehabbing whatever is freaking ailing you,
and you're not allowed to practice.
I'm not sure if Bill isn't going to hold off another week or two with the buy.
The buy is next week, isn't it?
Yes.
With the buy week coming up.
See, I don't know everything, everybody.
But the little things kind of slip by me sometimes.
Close to it.
Close to it. Close to it. And so I'm not really sure if he's not going to want to give him the extra two weeks to, you know,
get on page with Tom to, you know, just be precise with where he's supposed to be
and where Tom wants him to be.
I mean, even two weeks isn't going to make that happen,
but it'll get him closer to the goal.
So I'm not sure.
It's a 50-50 shot.
Was that the comfy chair that I needed?
Well, the big question that your chair is going to need to be a little more
comfortable is it's coming in just a minute.
Do not worry.
I promise you it's not that bad.
But anyway, I do agree with you on harry by the way i actually have it probably
60 40 in favor of him not playing i think that there's a i think there's a method to bill's
madness again in being able to bring a young wide receiver into a situation this is going to be a
tough test for them it's a hostile environment going into a road game i think if this were at
gillette it might be a little bit of a different circumstance,
but going into Baltimore,
I think right now, you definitely want
to activate him, know that he'll be ready,
come out of the chute after the bye week,
and we'll see what the kid has,
and I believe he's going to be a contributor to this
offense down the line. I just don't think it's
going to be this Sunday.
Murph, big question for you before
I let you go today.
We talked about Tom Brady being the GOAT all the time,
the greatest of all time in terms of quarterbacks,
maybe even football players.
You believe it.
I believe it.
We profess it.
And it's a part of life up here in New England.
But I want to put you on the hot seat when it comes to the GOAT of something else.
And that is, Murph, what is your goat of Halloween candy?
Oh, the goat of Halloween candy, without a doubt, is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
Ah, see, there we go.
Again, we share half the same brain, folks, and there's a reason for that.
I completely agree with you.
There's nothing.
I'm waiting for Reese's to put out, you know, the big cups that you buy in the two-pack?
Oh, yeah.
I'm waiting for them to put them out in the Halloween package in singles. I keep
asking, and they're not listening to me. Unfortunately, like Bill on draft day,
he's just not listening to me, and Reese's isn't listening to me. Make that happen, Reese's.
But Reese's peanut butter cups are the goat of candy.
Well, I believe that Bill should be listening to you on draft day, and I think the folks over at
Reese's should be doing that, too. My goal is to have a Reese's peanut butter cup big enough that you can eat
with a spoon someday.
So you know what?
I am completely, completely on board with you.
And I totally, totally agree.
Murph, it's always a blast every time you join me on the microphone.
I know our listeners love it.
I personally love it.
And I thank you for joining me today.
Very quickly, my friend, they should know.
I'm sure they all do,
but again, please remind any of our first-time listeners, our newbies,
where they can find you on social media and where they can read your great work.
Well, first, thanks for having me on.
And quite honestly, I've never listened to more Locked On shows than I have
since you started doing this, taking on this endeavor.
I mean, just from all around the league, I'm listening in to Locked On stuff.
It's fantastic stuff, people.
Go get it.
You can follow me on social media, at TeamMurf207.
You can listen to me twice a week on One Patriot's Place,
and we're thinking about changing the name to Two Patriotots place for the second show, but we're not sure.
We're just running that up the flag.
And, of course, you can read me every week at diehardbostonsportsfans.com.
I write a column there.
And, again, thank you so much for having me on, buddy.
It's always a pleasure to be here.
Always good times.
And go Pats.
Absolutely, and the pleasure is all mine, and definitely I highly recommend the podcast.
Murph's keys are going to be out
on Friday, folks. It's not game day
unless you read these keys, and
usually, again, seldom wrong,
right again, always on
the mark. So, Murph, thank you so much.
As for me, I will be back tomorrow
for my final thoughts, previews,
and my prediction on Sunday night's matchup between the Ravens and the Patriots.
As always, please join me each and every day on the Locked On Patriots podcast.
Subscribe and listen via your preferred podcast provider.
Once again, I am Mike DeBate of Locked On Patriots.
I thank Thomas Murphy for his appearance today, but most of all, I thank you all for listening.
Have a great day, everybody.
Happy Halloween, and
be safe out there trick-or-treating tonight.
We will see you tomorrow.
