Starting point is 00:00:45 On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome everybody to a special edition of not just Locked On Patriots, but Locked On Texans. We're going to start diving into the upcoming matchup between the New England Patriots and the Houston Texans. Mark Schofield here in one of the two big chairs. And I am joined by one of the hosts of Locked On Texans. He is Robert Land. Robert, how are you, buddy? I'm just hoping that this week isn't one of those typical Patriots-Texans. It just feels like we play these games every year, and every year it's the same thing.
Starting point is 00:01:32 It's Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, and the Patriots are like, Lucy, they just pulled the football away at the last second, and there's no chance for the Texans. Robert, man, Robert, don't be so hard on yourself here at the outset, my friend. But if you don't follow Robert and his work, you've got to check out Locked On Texans. They are at Locked On Texans. He does a great job with Brian Patterson, his co-host. You can also find some of Robert's work at another account, at HST Podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Definitely check out what Robert and Brian are doing at Locked On Texans as well. Also, quick shout-out to our friends at Bust.com. I'll have more of them in a bit, but they're going to help you get down to the game that we're about to dive into. And Robert, I guess I kind of want to start asking you your general thoughts about where this Houston offense is right now.
Starting point is 00:02:15 I mean, obviously Deshaun Watson comes in. I'll ask you some more about him in a second, but what are your general thoughts and expectations about this offense right now and going forward? The offensive line is kind of junk right now if Dwayne Brown would get back in I think the offensive line would solidify but I mean that's the story here in Houston is this the offensive line is the biggest problem outside of Deshaun Watson of course everybody's talking about that
Starting point is 00:02:39 but the offensive line without Dwayne Brown pretty much stinks. The center position, Nick Martin, he's really good. He was the second rounder last year. Our listeners know that we're really high on Nick Martin. I think everybody's pretty high on Nick Martin. Greg Mance, last week we talked about it. He solidified things at the guard position, right guard a little bit. But still, he's not great. He's a center. He was an undrafted
Starting point is 00:03:05 guy. So that's where the issues start for the Texans. But I don't know what you thought of Deshaun Watson, because that was a national television game. I know Patriots fans could could watch that one as well. And he looked really, really good on Thursday. I mean, what were your thoughts just watching him? Because the thing that people have to remember is the guy comes in with, he's three games or three days to work on his first game to prepare for it. And then you've got an offensive line in shambles that had given up 10 sacks in week one. All three tight ends were out with injuries. You have a wide receiving core that's pretty banged up. You're down to maybe two or three guys that they were counting on coming into the season. Will Fuller, who's their deep threat,
Starting point is 00:03:52 he broke his collarbone in training camp. So what were your thoughts on Deshaun Watson? We thought he looked great here. Yeah, Robert, I mean, in studying Watson, going through the All-22 and things like that, I came away pretty impressed with some of the things he was able to do offensively. I mean, you mentioned a lot of the context. Top three tight ends are down. You're on the road. It's a short week. It's your first NFL start.
Starting point is 00:04:16 And I think given the context, he had a pretty strong performance. Obviously, he made the one big play that changed the absolute entire course of that game with that 49-yard touchdown run. And where I thought Watson sort of really stood out was that drive at the end of the half, and then the other drive they had, that other 90-yard drive they had to get that last field goal. And on both of those, you saw a lot of 20 offensive personnel where you get two running backs, one on each side of them, and a lot of Hopkins isolated one-on-one situations where, for the most part, Watson looked pretty good in those type of environments. One throw that really sort of sticks in my mind is that dig route he threw to Hopkins late in the second quarter.
Starting point is 00:04:54 It was on that touchdown drive where he looked to the right side of the field, looked at Hopkins, came off of that, flashed his eyes to Miller in the flat to move the linebacker, and then drilled in that dig route. And so I was kind of impressed with what he did I think generally though I mean there's some stuff he obviously needs to work on he does need to have a little bit more discipline with his eyes you know sometimes he was staring down routes but I came away generally impressed for especially given the context of his first NFL start let me ask you about your guy and Tom Brady. Is there any slippage? Every time you see, oh, he has a little rough week or they have a loss. It's, oh, Tom Brady, he's not the same guy. He's throwing the ball a little bit like a medicine ball. I mean, I heard all kinds
Starting point is 00:05:36 of weird stuff about Brady after week one. Then week two, it was the same old, same old, just rolling the Saints. Yeah, I don't know. To me, wake me in the playoffs and tell me that Tom Brady's not the same guy. Yeah, and you heard a lot of the sort of panic up in New England here about Tom Brady after week one. And I give the Chiefs a lot of credit for what they were able to do defensively in week one. They showed Brady a lot of different looks, tight man coverage between the 20s when they get down in the red zone there were a lot more you know dropping seven or even eight defenders and
Starting point is 00:06:08 closing down throwing lanes so they had a nice game plan against him going in I think what we saw last week was a they're starting to get on track offensively they're starting to get everybody on the same page you're starting to see a little bit more of involvement from Rob Gronkowski and also looked at New Orleans defense, they're young, somewhat talented, I think, especially in the secondary, but they're inexperienced, you know, with guys like Lattimore, who looks pretty good so far, that first-round pick. But, you know, some other guys, Williams, the rookie free safety, you know, they had Devontae Harris, second-year cornerback, Alex Anzalone, who they picked on a bit at linebacker. So I think,
Starting point is 00:06:47 you know, the offense, I think, is going to be okay. It's just a matter of, you know, getting some of the kinks out here early. You know, but Robert, I wanted to ask you, you know, this offensive line for Houston, is there any movement on the Dwayne Brown situation? Do you guys expect him back anytime soon? Boy, there's a good question. I wish we knew anything. There has not been, like, that's the problem. There hasn't been one word come out of either camp.
Starting point is 00:07:07 You know, Dwayne Brown says, I'm going to play football this year. Does that mean he's going to play for the Texans? Does that mean he's going to play with his kids out in the backyard? I don't know. Right. Yeah, I mean, that's a tough one. You guys definitely need him back because, you know, obviously you mentioned the three tight ends.
Starting point is 00:07:21 They were down. You know, where is offensive production going to come aside from Hopkins? Are there guys coming back at the tight end spot? Any movement there? Or is this just going to be Watson to Hopkins and then whatever else you can piece together? Well, a big thing is, hopefully a big thing, is that Will Fuller Monday practiced. So he's back at practice. Maybe he gets back a little bit earlier.
Starting point is 00:07:46 We weren't expecting him by week three, but maybe that's a good sign. We're recording this on Tuesday. Maybe Wednesday, Bill O'Brien will have said, you know, he's back. But, you know, until that happens, you can't really open up things downfield. It would help if they could throw the ball down the field.
Starting point is 00:08:02 My concern, though, as far as Deshaun Watson, is's not good throwing deep from what I've seen at this point. When there's guys running downfield, he's not very accurate. You know, he's been good. He's been better on the short passes, on the deep passes. It's been a little bit shakier. But, you know, that just might be a guy that's getting used to NFL speed, getting used to the chemistry between his guys. You know, remember, he was the second string all the way through training camp. So this is somebody that's going to have to get used to playing with DeSean Watson and where DeSean, I mean, DeAndre Hopkins and where DeAndre Hopkins is going to be and some of the other wide receivers.
Starting point is 00:08:40 The other thing that's happened this week, and I don't know if the Patriots have noticed this too much. I don't know if you guys have seen this, but Jalen Strong being out, just being just flat out released third round pick from a couple of seasons ago. And coming into the year, you thought, well, maybe Jalen Strong can make a jump. He was injured some last season, didn't play much his first season as a rookie. You thought, well, maybe Jalen Strong can do something. He showed some hands. He's a big physical guy, a better quarterback, you know, not Brock Osweiler. Obviously, that helps. But, you know, you would think that might be the equation for the Texans to be a little
Starting point is 00:09:16 bit better from a wide receiving standpoint with Jalen Strong and Will Fuller healthy because he missed a lot of last year. He started off really good the first couple of games and then injuries set him back for the rest of the season. So, you know, there was all this optimism that, hey, maybe the wide receiving court can make a jump. It's a young group. But now Jalen Strong is gone. Will Fuller may or may not be back. And it's all DeAndre Hopkins. It's him or bust. And as far as the tight ends are concerned uh yeah it looks like you would from everything that you would imagine there two guys were out on concussion protocol that could be back and that's uh steven anderson and ryan griffin they're good at catching patches passes
Starting point is 00:09:55 not tremendously good at blocking so you don't have that a dual threat that could help out your offensive line that's in a shambles when you're running the tight formations and that sort of thing. And that's what people don't understand with Deshaun Watson in that first game. You know, not only is he playing his first game with a horrible offensive line, but without tight ends, literally without tight ends, they were putting tackles in there without the ability to have a dual threat. So as a defense, it just made it so much easier for the Bengals. So what Deshaun Watson was able to do and just moving it when he did was miraculous in a way.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Mark Schofield, Robert Land doing a little locked on Texans, locked on Patriots crossover. We're going to get to some more on this upcoming matchup between the Patriots and the Texans. But first, I want to remind all those Patriots fans up there, we're getting you ready for the game, but I want to get you to the game as well. I want to remind you about our friends over at Bust.com. They're back for another offer, giving you round-trip transportation from Boston down into Gillette for Sunday's game. They're offering you air-conditioned coach transportation right from Huntington Avenue. It's right by the Prudential T-Stop down into Foxborough. Well in time
Starting point is 00:11:08 for you to tailgate before the game. And if you want to get started on the ride down, feel free. Have a couple beverages. Let them do the driving for you. There are bathrooms on board as well to take care of you if that's a concern you've got as well. And if you're worried about your tailgating supplies, don't. They'll leave them on the bus for you. They'll take care of them. They'll watch you. You can get from the tailgate to the game in your seat and watch all the action. That's just one more perk they're going to provide for you. Look, we all know getting down into Foxborough can be a pain. Sure, you can take the train, but it's often overbooked. Parking, a mess. Getting out afterwards, you don't want to
Starting point is 00:11:43 sit on Route 1 trying to get home. Worse, catch a ride with a friend. you don't want to sit on route one trying to get home worse catch a ride with a friend you don't want to be cramped in the back seat of his old car that always smells like cheese don't put yourself through that go to patriots.bus.com let them take care of all the driving for you you can use promo code locked on paths you'll get 15 off your round trip fare that's an incredible deal that takes care of all the transportation for you also they've got an app you can get in touch with other Patriots fans you can request other stops as well or get in touch with their support staff so as you get ready for Sunday make sure to get in touch with my friends at bus.com and let them take care of getting you down to this game now Robert I want to ask you one question about this Texans running game because it seemed to me like watching them Thursday night Tyler Irvin seems to be taking on more of a role do you think
Starting point is 00:12:29 that was a game plan specific thing or do you expect him to see more and more snaps as we go forward I think the Texans all through training camp have liked what they've seen from this guy he's just a rookie last year he looks a lot lot better, a lot more confident. But the guy that's the game changer, in my opinion, and most fans' opinion that have watched the Texans, is Deontay Foreman. And we would like to see more of him. He got more carries from the first game. He got one carry. Fans were beside themselves at that, especially with an offense that stunk against Jacksonville. They couldn't move the ball, not even to use Deontay Foreman. And we saw tons of Lamar Miller last season.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Lamar Miller is not an explosive guy. He's not a guy that really showed us this game-breaking ability that, you know, he was kind of billed as. And, you know, he's not somebody that you can run between the tackles, which the Texans seem dead set to do with the running back. So if that's the case, then you need to go with Deontay Foreman. They've got a lot of depth at running back. That's probably the strength of the offense, to be honest with you.
Starting point is 00:13:34 With Foreman, Alfred Blue looked better in training camp, and he's developed over his two or three years with the Texans. He's come on, and you've got Tyler Irvin and, of course, Lamar Miller. So you've got guys that are all at least solid. And, you know, the idea is that maybe Deontay Foreman can give you that guy that that was could be a little bit more explosive in the running game. Let me ask you from a standpoint of, you know, somebody that's watched the Patriots for years, you know, just how do you stop their offense? What what teams have success against the Patriots? You know, just how do you stop their offense? What teams have success against the
Starting point is 00:14:06 Patriots? You know, the one team that I always think of is the Ravens and what they've been able to do with them in the playoffs. And, you know, I used to co-host this with Aaron Wilson, who covered the Ravens for several years, and he's now down here covering the Texans with the Houston Chronicle. And he said with the Ravens, a lot of it was just about confidence. I think there has to be some coaching and what John Harbaugh does for preparation. But what stops the New England Patriots offense? Yeah, and Aaron's right in a sense that the Baltimore Ravens always sort of posed that almost existential threat, maybe not inside the Patriots locker room, but at least outside to the rest of us watching from the outside, sort of Patriots fans and things like that, because we'd always look
Starting point is 00:14:49 at, oh no, it's the Ravens, and they've always had success against the Patriots. But I think there are two things that give the Patriots a little bit of trouble when they're facing defense. First is immediate sort of A-gap pressure from either side of the center, right up in Tom Brady's face quickly after the snap. Brady isn't the center right up in Tom Brady's face quickly after the snap. Brady isn't the most athletic quarterback. Certainly nobody's going to mistake him for a guy like Michael Vick or Russell Wilson, but he can handle sort of edge pressure fairly well. He's good at sliding around and climbing the pocket, but when it's immediate pressure in his face, that usually disrupts him and gets him off his game. And so that's one thing to watch for.
Starting point is 00:15:23 You know, can the Texans, Texans, can those guys up front, do they do what they did last year in their playoff game where they showed a lot of sugar in the A-gap, showing linebackers down in both A-gaps on either side of the center, trying to pressure them that way. Obviously, Romeo Cornell has a lot of, and Bill, I mean, Mike Vrabel, excuse me, a lot of familiarity with Tom Brady over the years. They know what gets them. They know what gets him.
Starting point is 00:15:45 They know what frustrates him. So that's one thing, seeing if they try to bring a gap pressure. Another thing, and this is what the Ravens and Rex Ryan did with the Ravens and then later with the Jets, was constrict the underneath throwing lanes. Drop defenders into coverage. Take away those pivot routes, those slant routes, those quick out routes that Brady and the Patriots have loved to throw for years. I think that's why you're seeing them get a little bit more vertical in the passing game. That's why they bring in a Brandon Cooks, a Philip Dorsett,
Starting point is 00:16:12 to try to stretch defenses down the field a little bit. But those are the two areas, Robert, that I think defenses should try to focus on. Immediate agap pressure and then trying to constrict those underneath throwing lanes. Turn them into more of a downfield passing team. They sometimes struggle doing that. Sometimes Brady misses on those throws. If you can get pressure on them, then try to make them throw more downfield, you might have some success. Well, I'm going to speak to exactly what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:16:34 The short passing game, the passing game to the running backs and the tight ends coming out of the backfield. The Texans have had issues with that with their linebackers for for ages and and one of the best things that i think happened to the texans this year is brian cushing with the ped suspension because brian cushing i'm gonna tell you to be honest with you he was just a guy uh he was terrible in past situations he was too slow uh the guy had had the two season-ending knee injuries never been the same since then and I felt like he was just grandfathered in I didn't understand it I didn't understand the contract that they gave him a few years ago that was kind of ridiculous and they've kind of
Starting point is 00:17:16 they've been stuck with they're paying him too much to be just a guy and they drafted Zach Cunningham this year and I think that's going to be a big difference maybe in this game, what Zach Cunningham can do against the running backs and against maybe tight ends coming out of the backfield. He can help there. How the safeties play is going to be key. The safeties so far for the Texans have looked good. We always consider that a weak point with the Texans.
Starting point is 00:17:42 They've never put much as far as draft picks or any stock altogether in the safety position. But the safeties have been pretty darn good as far as you look through. And I know you're going to talk pro football focus. We both talk about the affiliation that we've got and the numbers that they have on the Texans defense. And the safeties numbers have looked good. Zach Cunningham's numbers have looked good. And I think that's a good sign for the Texans coming into this game. But Cunningham during the preseason got beat twice by the Patriots on touchdown. So I mean, that's you'll hope he learned a couple
Starting point is 00:18:18 of lessons from there. The other thing I'll just throw at you is Wes Welker. He said when we asked him when the assistant coaches speak like maybe once a year, which was during mini camp and Wes Welker got that got a chance to speak. He's not assistant with the Texans. If anybody has forgotten over there in New England and he said, hey, I know some things. I think I can help the Texans win that game when they play the Patriots. And I think I might have an idea or two. So that's going to be interesting to see what Wes Welker might bring. And just if the Texans have improved in that area and that to me, that's the key to the whole game.
Starting point is 00:18:53 Can, as far as, you know, going up against Brady, can they eliminate those, you know, short yardage, that little scat back running back plays that the,
Starting point is 00:19:01 the Patriots run and, and that, that kind of thing, you know, that that's the key. Yeah. And Robert, before we kind of, kind of you know close this out I wanted to ask about J.J. Watt I mean obviously we heard a ton about Watt you know in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey he's done incredible work off the field but the on the field production to me it looked like he was all over the field in the backfield on almost every other snap against Cincinnati on Thursday
Starting point is 00:19:24 night maybe didn't have a ton of production in the season opener, but what have you seen so far from J.J. Watt on the field? Again, the pro football focus numbers, I'll go back to them. You know, the grading, it's been good and better than I thought just from the eye test in that first game. The second game, you saw it. There was no question. You saw it with your eyes. He looks like the old JJ Watt he didn't get to the quarterback there there might have been a couple of those plays where if he's you know two or three years ago he gets his hand on him well he takes him down when he gets the hand on him with those plays but you know there was a couple of sacks that were
Starting point is 00:19:59 not credited to JJ on the record books uh McKinney got them, but, and then I think, well, McKinney got one and Kareem Jackson got one. And I would say that they were directly attributable to JJ Watt pushing Andy Dalton out of the pocket and making something happen there.
Starting point is 00:20:16 You know, from the standpoint of the Patriots, is this, is there anything that the Texans can do to the Patriots defense that causes them problems? Well, I mean, one thing, obviously, I think what you want to do if you're the Texans coming into this game is I think you want to try to establish some semblance of a running game.
Starting point is 00:20:35 The longer Tom Brady sort of sits on the sideline, the better your chances are going to be because you obviously want to limit the score and keep this to a close game, turn it into somewhat of a field position defensive battle. And what you can do, we saw some success with this against the Patriots from New Orleans. Those sort of pick plays, those rub concepts and things like that, you didn't see a lot of that from the Texans against the Bengals. They were doing more stuff where you had space and concepts,
Starting point is 00:21:01 all-curl concepts, corner outs where you got Hopkins isolated one-on-one on an island against Pac-Man Jones. I think what you want to do is sort of bring some receivers together and closer and sort of run those rub concepts, get guys open, scheme them open a little bit, and then keep this game close. And when it's close, if you've kept it close in the second half, let Deshaun Watson take some shots downfield. Because I think at times they were almost too conservative with him,
Starting point is 00:21:26 and I get it, given he was first start on the road, short week. Now you've got that mini little bye. You've had some more time to get a game plan in. Let him take some shots downfield because if you're just going to let him throw flat routes and comeback routes and things like that, New England's going to have an answer for that. But if you take some shots downfield, target some of these cornerbacks in the passing game, you know, you might be able to hit a big one here and there.
Starting point is 00:21:50 And, you know, obviously Kansas City had success down the field. The Saints hit some plays downfield. They were held out of the end zone, but they had some success between the 20s. Take those shots. Let the shots, Shashawn Watson makes them throw us downfield. If Will Fuller plays, I think you'll definitely see some shots down the field. The problem is the Texans don't have any guys that they can go deep with. I mean, DeAndre Hopkins is a really good wide receiver,
Starting point is 00:22:15 but he's not a guy that's going to take off down the field, beat his guy. He's a guy that's got to play. He's got to hand fight. He's got to box you to get open, and that's got to play, he's got a hand fight. You know, he's got to box you to get open. And that's not his game. And they badly need that deep threat down the field. The wide receiver position, it just doesn't help a quarterback at all. The Texans wide receiver position right now is a big problem.
Starting point is 00:22:41 The offensive line we can talk about as well. But that's the big issue with the Texans really is that wide receiver position and having guys besides Hopkins, besides Nuke Hopkins, that can do something. And, you know, I don't know. I mean, I'm assuming this is going to be Patriots by two or three touchdowns as usual. The Texans might keep it close for a while. You know, they have a chance to do that with their defense.
Starting point is 00:23:06 And a little concern on the defense because Kevin Johnson is out now four to six weeks and they were thin at quarterback with losing Boye in the offseason to the Jaguars. So they were four solid guys deep last year and now that they were three and now it's just down to two guys. And, you know, Jonathan Joseph got a little bit banged up in the Bengals game and he's older and gets banged up a lot. So does Kareem Jackson. So that got a little bit banged up in the Bengals game and he's older and gets banged up a lot so does Kareem Jackson so so that's that's a little bit of a concern but I I just don't worry uh yeah I hate to say this and I'm I might jinx it but I just don't worry
Starting point is 00:23:35 about the Patriots uh wide receivers I just always worry about whether running backs and the tight ends and the guys these little short routes that that's what kills the Texans yeah, I think that's a good point and a fair point, Robert. And so, look, you know, we're here at the end now, and it is prediction time. You just said New England by two or three scores. Is that kind of where you're thinking is right now? Until something changes, you know, until I see the Roadrunner and Wiley Coyote do something differently,
Starting point is 00:24:02 you know, he finally catches them. I just don't see it happening. But Deshaun Watson, that's the X factor. That's something that the Texans maybe have never had in a quarterback as a guy that has the confidence. He's got the big stage ability. He will play up to the occasion, I think. And so maybe that gives the Texans a fighting chance. But this offense has just got so many things. I mean, Watson can only do so much. You can't throw it and catch it and block and do, you know, it's just there's only so much you can do. Yeah. Yeah. I kind of think you're you're on to where this game is going. But, you know, one thing I will mention is, look, you know, Watson went up against that Alabama defense twice, you know,
Starting point is 00:24:47 in back-to-back national championship games, had some success against them in both contests. There is some similarity between what Nick Saban likes to do defensively and what Bill Belichick likes to do. Those two guys know each other well. There's some schematic similarity there. And so, you know, there might be a level of familiarity with Watson and what he sees on the field on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:25:04 And so that's also something to keep in mind. But, you know, Robert, tremendous stuff, man. I'll turn the mic over to you. Go ahead and plug some stuff. Let the people know where to find you. Yeah, just the last thing I'll say is, you know, the Texans, they've done everything that they've can as far as getting the brain trust of the Patriots between Romeo Grinnell and Mike Vrabel and Wes Welker. And there's just a list, a list of guys, Bill O'Brien that have all been inside Belichick's circle and should know
Starting point is 00:25:34 what to expect. So you would think the Texans would have a good idea on both sides of the ball, but you know, sometimes it's just personnel and sometimes one guy's got Brady and one guy doesn't. And that's all the difference that, that, that there is in this, but just, yeah, we're's got Brady and one guy doesn't. And that's all the difference that, that,
Starting point is 00:25:45 that there is in this, but just, yeah, we're, we're at locked on Texans. I also do the Houston sports talk podcast at HST podcast. We talk a little Astros and rockets there. So,
Starting point is 00:25:56 you know, I, even though I don't give the Texans much of a chance to beat the Patriots, I think if the Astros play the red Sox, I would favor the red Sox. I mean, I'd favor the Astros in that series. I think the Astros would have a pretty good chance of beating the red Sox right now. I know if the Astros played the Red Sox, I would favor the Red Sox. I mean, I'd favor the Astros in that series. I think the Astros would have a pretty good chance of beating the Red Sox right now.
Starting point is 00:26:11 I know that you guys got the bullpen advantage. I think the Astros have the lineup and maybe the starting pitching advantage with Keuchel and Verlander both now in the fold. And, you know, I think that's going to be a great series, though. That could be a fantastic series. And, you know, it's not that I wouldn't a great series, though. That could be a fantastic series. And, you know, it's not that I wouldn't give the Red Sox a really good chance at that. I think I'd be like 55-45. I would give the Astros the edge. And they would get home field, obviously, at this point, too. Nice to see the Astros up at the top of the standings again, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:26:40 Oh, it was a long, hard road for them to get back to where to where they were but yeah it was like three three straight years worst team and worst team in baseball history i think over a three-year stretch so yeah that's been a lot of fun and and you got a guy up there right now and uh evan drelic who covers the red socks that used to be a regular on my houston sports talk podcast a friend of mine and we might have a little chat with him before the end of the season.
