I hope everyone had a great weekend.
And once again, folks, the Patriots were on the right side of a one-sided contest.
This time it was in the friendly confines of Gillette Stadium back home in Foxborough.
In fact, if one were so inclined, one might even call it a Foxborough flyby, if you will.
Pun intended, I know there, but bear with me for a little bit on that one.
In any case, a 30-14 victory over the New York Jets, and there was a lot to like in
this one, folks.
I'll help to break it all down for you, and to close the show today, I did consider not
doing this.
However, I will offer my final thoughts on the Antonio Brown situation and, of course,
the end of his brief tenure in Foxborough, which came to an end on Friday afternoon after
Lockdown Patriots had wrapped its recording for the week.
So I'll offer some brief thoughts on that.
But sit tight.
An action-packed show today.
I certainly hope that you'll enjoy what we have to offer for you.
But first,
we start with the news of the day, and that is the Patriots' 30-14 victory over the New York
Jets on Sunday in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Look, take flight might be the rallying cry of
the New York Jets, but it was the New England Patriots soaring above the clouds on Sunday
afternoon in Foxborough. Considering the week that was in New England, all of the fallout with
the Antonio Brown saga, the Pats really looked that they had left any remaining turbulence behind in a decisive 30
to 14 victory over their AFC East rivals. Tom Brady connected with his receiving core for two
touchdown passes. Running backs looked solid. Sonny Michel, Rex Burkhead each added a rushing
touchdown for the Pats. But defensively, the Pats really just continued to impress at a higher level each and every week.
New England's defense didn't allow a defensive touchdown for the third straight week.
And I know people are going to point to their competition, but bottom line is, that is impressive.
These are NFL teams that the Patriots are facing, and they're holding them scoreless.
It really, really is remarkable, and something that Patriots fans can really get excited about
and something that the Patriots players can be very proud of.
The Pats were dominant.
They dominated their way to a 3-0 record thus far in 2019.
And to top it all off, their Week 4 opponent, the Buffalo Bills,
also with a victory yesterday over the Cincinnati Bengals,
they moved to 3-0.
It's going to be a battle of the unbeatens in Orchard Park this weekend.
This is going to be the Patriots' toughest test so far.
This one shaping up to be a great game in Buffalo this weekend, folks.
But we will get to the Bills, maybe a little bit in this show,
but definitely this week.
Don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves right now.
So let's start with how the action played out yesterday in Foxborough.
Sonny Michel scored the game's first touchdown.
That was on a 5-yard run. That capped a nine-play, 88-yard drive. And from that point on, Tom Brady
and the offense began to exploit the holes in the Jets' secondary. And the Jets' defense looked very
much out of sorts yesterday. They were definitely missing Quinnen Williams. They were missing C.J.
Mosley. There were a lot of factors into the Jets looking very much confused yesterday, but the secondary really looked like there was definite problems, and the Patriots did exploit
those holes. They spread out New York's defensive backfield by employing multiple four-receiver
formations. You saw Julian Edelman lining up, Philip Dorsett, Jacoby Myers. You even saw my
main man Gunnar Roschowski get into the action, And yes, Gunnar is still my main man, folks.
Still recovering from the situation yesterday.
We will get to that in a minute.
For those of you that don't know, Gunnar did have a
sorry, sir, doing my best moment yesterday.
I swear this is really becoming like a lot of free advertisement for the movie Spaceballs,
but I encourage you to watch it.
You'll get my inside jokes a little bit better if you do watch that movie,
if you haven't seen it already. Mel Brooks classic. watch it. You'll get my inside jokes a little bit better if you do watch that movie, if you haven't seen it already. Mel Brooks classic, love it. But that being said, the Patriots game
plan offensively was definitely stout, as usual. Credit Josh McDaniels and Bill Belichick and Tom
Brady. They knew the Jets' weaknesses, and they exploited them. And they especially did so early
on in this game. As a result, Philip Dorsett had a 25-yard touchdown reception, Julian Edelman
caught another score from three yards out early in the second quarter, and the Patriots scored on their first three
possessions. At the half, they had already built a 20-0 lead and looked to be in cruise control.
As for Tom Brady, well, he put in another stellar effort, no question about it.
He finished the day completing 28 of 42 passes, 306 yards, and he looked to have the game well
in hand. As a matter of fact, Brady even came out with 841 left in the fourth quarter.
Shocking, I know.
Against the Jets, no one expected that.
However, at that point, Tom looked like his day was done, and that gave way to Jarrett
Stidham.
Yes, it was Stidham time yesterday in Foxborough.
He initially looked pretty sharp.
Jarrett came in, completed his first two passes.
They looked crisp. His third, however, different story. That was intercepted, returned for a touchdown by
Jet Safety Jamal Adams. And to his credit, Stidham knew it right away. He overthrew his receiver.
Adams was just in the right place at the right time. He read his eyes all the way. And Stidham
is going to make these rookie mistakes. I know Patriots Twitter was a little hard on him yesterday.
A lot of people were worried.
You even saw some calls to bring back Brian Hoyer, things of all nature.
But I will tell you, be calm when it comes to Stidham.
He's going to have these moments.
He's still a solid backup.
He's learning the offense.
And folks, you still have Tom Brady under center.
So no reason to sweat that just yet.
Stidham knows what he did.
You can bet Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniels, and of course, Tom Brady going to be working him hard this week in
practice, getting him to correct the mistake that he made yesterday. And of course, Brady,
just as he thought he was out, they pulled him back in. Godfather reference there as well.
And of course, Brady came in, just kept them steered in the right direction,
and eventually to a 30-14 victory
over the Jets.
But to me, folks, the story of the day is this defense, and they were stifling for the
third straight week.
I think the word impressive at this point is even an understatement.
They have looked excellent.
And I get it.
The competition has not been up to the level of the competition that they will be facing
later in the season or potentially in the playoffs.
I certainly get that.
Sam Darnold, he was out yesterday still battling mononucleosis.
Trevor Simeon was out yesterday with a severe ankle injury.
So they're down to a third string quarterback in Luke Falk.
And Falk did show his lack of experience yesterday, and we'll get into that in a little bit.
But Luke Falk is still a pro, folks.
He's in this league for a reason, and the
fact that the Patriots are maybe playing against quote-unquote lesser competition right now is not
something they should be penalized for. After all, this is a Patriots team in years past that we've
seen make average and even sometimes below average quarterbacks look pretty good in the process,
so it's not a situation where, oh, well, they're facing terrible competition and wait until
they face someone good.
Yes, there is an element of truth to that.
But right now, this Patriots defense looks excellent.
They're taking care of business against the teams they need to.
You can only play who's on your schedule.
And the Patriots have done that and done that well up until this point.
So before you start to criticize the defense on this, or you buy into the criticism on the defense on this, I should say, always remember that fact.
They do look very impressive, and they're playing great football right now.
So back to the field of play, and as they did against Ben Roethlisberger in week one,
and of course last week against Ryan Fitzpatrick, to a little bit of a lesser degree Josh Rosen,
they continued to keep the opponent's
offense in lockdown, and Falk and the Jets' offense really struggled to move the ball.
They went 0-12 on third down. Completions were really few and far between, and it didn't let
up as the game went on. In fact, Falk actually had an errant pass in the third quarter, intercepted
by Devin McCourty deep in the Jets' own territory. So it was expected that New
York was going to have some difficulty in the passing game. There's no question about that.
The Patriots came in with a great game plan to contain that, and the Jets did look like they
were struggling offensively, especially in the pass. The secondary looked great. The linebacking
crew looked phenomenal. They were dropping back into coverage. Jamie Collins had a monster game
yesterday, and it should be noted that my good friend Ian Glendon at Full Press Coverage tweeted
out yesterday that he believed Jamie Collins is making a serious push for Defensive Player of the
Year, and I know it's early, folks, but it's hard to argue with that right now. Jamie looks great,
so comfortable in this defense, really has been a huge addition, and I know Patriots Nation,
especially the Patriots team, is thrilled to have him back in Foxborough.
But the Jets didn't just struggle through the air.
They struggled on the ground as well, and this was a bit of a surprise.
And Matt Chatham and I talked about this on Friday, about the Jets trying to establish
the run, it being the only chance they had to remain competitive, and the Patriots stuffed
it.
Le'Veon Bell carried only 18 times for 35 yards, and the Patriots stuffed it. Le'Veon Bell carried only 18 times for 35 yards
and the Patriots defensive line of Danny Shelton, Lawrence Guy, Adam Butler kept him largely in
check and this is exactly what Patriots defenses have a tendency to do. They take your strength
and they completely take it away. Make Luke Falk beat you through the air and Falk simply just
could not do that yesterday. They were equally adept at defending both the run and the pass.
The Jets were only able to cross into New England territory once in the first half.
They had to punt on their first six possessions and 10 of 13 overall.
So a stifling day for the New England defense.
They looked great and will continue to look great, and they're going to need to be even
better when they face the Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
Despite that, the Jets did come up with 14 points, and we alluded to one earlier when
I had mentioned that Jamal Adams had run back the Stidham Pass for a pick six and give the
Jets seven points.
Well, they collected another seven points, and yeah, this one was tough for me, folks.
I'm not going to lie.
It was New York's first points of the day, and they came late in
the third quarter when Pat's returner, receiver, and my favorite meme subject, Gunnar Oshelski,
muffed a punt that was eventually recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by Jets cornerback
Arthur Mollett. And the minute it happened, you could see the devastation on the face of Gunnar.
For a rookie, especially a rookie that struggled to make the
team like he did, you could see that he looked like he had let the team down. And not only was
it a muffed punt, but it also resulted in a seven-point touchdown. So definitely a disheartening
moment for Gunner. And look, for all of the hype train that I buy into with the meme, and a lot of
my colleagues in the media love to hype this kid, because he's a good kid, and you do want to see him succeed. He's a rookie. He's going to make mistakes like this,
and again, like Stidham, he's going to have to work on that. Now, with the punt return game,
it's a little more magnified with Gunnar. He has to be very, very careful, because Stidham can work
on his mistakes, and he can have a week or so to recover from them. Don't forget, he probably won't
be seeing game action, but Gunnar is a big part of the recover from them. Don't forget, he probably won't be seeing game action.
But Gunner is a big part of the special teams core of this team.
And he could also be seeing snaps at wide receivers.
So he'll definitely be working on that.
He took the questions after the game.
In my opinion, he showed a lot of maturity, took the blame on himself, and did indicate
that he'd be working very hard in practice this week to correct those mistakes.
So hopefully, this won't be a sign of things to come.
Hopefully it'll be a one-off mistake that he's made and he'll continue to return punts
and be a very key part of the Patriots offense and special teams going forward.
And ultimately, this did not end up being a catastrophic mistake for the Patriots.
They went on to win.
That win marks the seventh straight victory over the Jets.
It's also their ninth consecutive regular season win at home over New York so a great day for New England a great
day for the Patriots and the next time they face the Jets it might be a different story some of
these guys that they had out may end up coming back so don't look at this one as a harbinger
of things to come with the second matchup they have coming with the Jets could be a little bit
of a different game down in the Meadowlands when the Patriots
take on the Jets in October.
But again, not all news is good news, and the Patriots did have some injury concerns
to keep an eye on yesterday, and I'll get to those in a minute.

It's unfortunate that no team can seem to escape game after game without getting bit by the injury
bug. And yesterday, the Patriots had a couple of scary bites of the injury bug.
One looks to be maybe crisis averted,
but the others we're going to keep a close eye on.
The first was late in the second quarter,
and that was when wide receiver Julian Edelman left the game with a chest injury.
Now, he did so after catching a three-yard pass from Tom Brady.
Edelman fell on his right side,
and he was tightly sandwiched in between the Jets defenders,
Henry Anderson and former Patriot Harvey Lange. Edelman fell on his right side and he was tightly sandwiched in between the Jets defenders Henry Anderson and former Patriot Harvey Lange.
Edelman got up. He was holding his rib area. Originally, it looked like he was holding his shoulder, but he was wincing as he walked toward the sidelines.
It looked like he was going to go off into the blue medical tent, but with halftime only mere seconds away, he ended up going directly into the locker room, and he actually did not return to the game, which set off a lot of speculation about Edelman's status and how he
was going to be able to recover from this or what his injury might be. After the game, we actually
got a pretty quick response on this, which is surprising, but according to Ian Rapoport of the
NFL Network, Edelman's x-rays had indeed come back negative, and the news on his injury was much more positive than ominous. So obviously, that's great news for the Patriots. If it had been any
type of a break or any severe chest trauma, that would be multiple weeks that we were looking at
without Julian Edelman, and there is going to be additional information that will come this week,
and we will continue to monitor and keep a close eye. However, at this point, it looks like Edelman
should not miss significant time from this,
and that's great news for everyone involved when it comes to Patriots Nation.
But that wasn't the only injury to the Patriots' wide receiver core on Sunday.
Receiver Josh Gordon also left the field early in the second half with an apparent finger injury.
Now, it had appeared that his hand had become caught in his opponent's face mask,
maybe even a little bit on the jersey.
But from the moment that happened, you could see that Gordon was in pain. He was wincing,
he was shaking his hand. The trainers immediately came over to take a look at that. But surprisingly,
Gordon bounced back pretty quickly. He was back in the game late in the third quarter,
made an acrobatic catch of a 28-yard pass inside the five-yard line. And when he did so,
you could hear Patriots
Nation collectively breathing a sigh of relief because Gordon looked to be pretty solid at
that point and did play the rest of the game.
Now, it's unknown whether or not swelling or anything like that could derail his progress
this week.
We will also continue to monitor that situation, but it does look like Josh Gordon's playing
status is probably still solid as well.
But again, anything can happen, so we will continue to monitor that. but it does look like Josh Gordon's playing status is probably still solid as well.
But again, anything can happen, so we will continue to monitor that.
And the injuries weren't only on the offensive side of the ball.
They occurred on the defense as well.
Defensive lineman Adam Butler, another solid game for Butler yesterday,
but he exited the game late in the third quarter with a leg injury. He combined on a sack with linebacker Dante Hightower,
and he looked pretty good on the play, but he stayed on the field,
and you could, again, see the pain in his face.
Trainers came out. Butler did end up getting up.
He walked off the field on his own accord.
You could see him over on the sidelines talking to Bill Belichick for a little bit
after the injury had occurred, so we'll wait and see what happens with Butler this week.
But that wasn't all for the Patriots' defensive injuries.
Linebacker Dante Hightower, who has played great so far this season,
but always an injury concern with Hightower.
He left the game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury.
Now, with both Butler and with Hightower,
not a whole lot is known on their injury status.
So keep a very sharp eye on them this week.
I'll continue to monitor that here on Locked On.
But, of course, it always warrants looking
at these two.
They've played great right now, and Patriots Nation is definitely hoping for the best when
it comes to the status of both Butler and Hightower going forward.
So that being said, the Patriots leave the Jets in their rearview mirror for the time
being, and they are traveling north to Orchard Park, New York this week.
They are going to take on the Buffalo Bills at New Era Field.
And with the Bills winning yesterday over the Cincinnati Bengals, 21-17,
that is going to set up a matchup of AFC East rivals and also a battle of the unbeaten.
Both teams come in with identical 3-0 records.
So this is going to be an interesting one.
And folks, the Buffalo Bills are for real.
A lot of people have pointed to their competition as well as the Patriots competition, but they're solid on the defensive
side of the ball, one of the better defenses in this league. And also offensively, they've looked
pretty good lately. Josh Allen is starting to come into his own under center in Buffalo. So
this is going to be a good contest. We're going to continue to preview this throughout the week
here on Locked On. Of course, I will be doing the crossover on Wednesday again this week.
The crossover show with the team at Locked On Bills will return to its normal Wednesday
time slot.
So it should be a great week of anticipation leading up to Sunday's matchup in Buffalo.
I'm looking forward to it, and it's my sincere hope that you all are as well.
And I did allude earlier to the fact that I would be offering my final thoughts on the
Antonio Brown situation, and I will do so in just a moment.

It really can be said that the Antonio Brown era in New England
was brief yet eventful, and that's probably an understatement,
but I think it's pretty appropriate for exactly what has happened.
Since announcing the signing of Brown on September 7th,
the Patriots really have been riding what I like to call
a tumultuous wave of highs and lows. And listen, Brown is suprem 7th, the Patriots really have been riding what I like to call a tumultuous wave
of highs and lows. And listen, Brown is supremely talented, but there's also a part of him that's
very deeply troubled. And he arrived in Foxborough with a lot of concerns surrounding his character.
And on Friday, I think he left town amidst even more problems. And some of these may even land
him in legal difficulty. So there is definitely a lot
more than meets the eye when it comes to this situation with Antonio Brown, and I think the
Patriots just had reached a point where they simply could not do this any longer. Now there's
no questioning Brown's talent, and on that level this was highly disappointing, but the Patriots'
concerns ran deeper than just what Brown could bring to them on the field. It was a trust issue,
plain and simple, and the Patriots simply just could not put the trust in Brown any longer,
not only to stay out of trouble when it comes to a social media and public persona standpoint,
but also stay out of trouble when it came to a legal standpoint as well. And I think that's one
of the big reasons why Robert Kraft made the decision, looks like he made the decision in
tandem with Bill Belichick to
cut Brown loose and say that the distraction was no longer worth the reward that Brown was going
to bring to them on the field any longer. And I know Patriots fans were not happy about this,
and as much as they may not want to admit it, the clock started to tick on Brown's time in New
England really from the moment that he signed. You know, a lot of people had wondered whether
his antics would cause a disruption to the
locker room, and that locker room is typically singular in focus.
The Patriots are about winning, folks.
And from a football standpoint, Brown looked to be doing all the right things.
You saw him working out on the field, spending time going over plays with Tom Brady.
There were even reports that he was staying at the facility until about 10 o'clock at
night, going over plays and catching passes from Jarrett Stidham.
We even saw him on Instagram working out at the TB12 facility.
So Brown looked to be dialed in to what the Patriots wanted to do on the field.
But off the field was an entirely different story.
And by now, we know the pertinent details of all of the allegations levied against him
by his former trainer, Brittany Taylor.
So I'm not going to rehash those, and we're simply going to move on from those allegations.
But despite even those allegations, Brown ended up playing in the Patriots' victory
over the Dolphins a couple of weeks ago, and it looked as if he was actually going to be
playing in this game yesterday against the New York Jets.
However, throughout the week, Sports Illustrated's Robert Klimko published numerous
reports regarding accusations against Brown for domestic incidents, fiscal irresponsibility,
and another allegation of sexual misconduct. And regardless of your feelings of Klimko's motives
behind these pieces, they really were a knockout blow for Brown's time in New England, and there
really isn't much question about that. And this was especially true on Friday when Klimko revealed that Brown had sent intimidating
text messages to one of his accusers, and that was done in a group text setting.
And this appeared to be a violation of the league's personal conduct policy.
So as a result, the accuser's legal team contacted the NFL, and the league intern investigated
the matter and determined that Brown
had indeed sent the text messages. And these text messages were quite simply unacceptable.
They belittled her financial status. But what really crossed the line was when Brown included
a picture of the accuser's children in the text messages. And apparently that served as the fatal
flaw in all of this. And on Friday afternoon, the Patriots inevitably released Antonio Brown
after what had been really an 11-day ordeal with the Patriots.
Now, during Brown's tenure here, the Patriots were highly criticized by fans and media,
both nationally and locally, and some will argue that this was more than fair,
considering that Brown's reputation and actions really should not have even earned him a place on the team.
And there are some that actually might view this as an exercise in journalistic chest
thumping at a national level with the intention of sticking it to the Patriots or trying to
weaken them by having Brown removed from their roster.
But for all intents and purposes, I think it's important to remember that Brown was
not removed from the Pats roster for those individual actions.
Keep in mind, he has not yet been charged with any criminal acts.
These are civil accusations, and the accusations regarding the text messages have not been
definitively ruled on by the league. That investigation is still ongoing. So then the
question beckons, why did they release Antonio Brown? Well, quite frankly, it was simply a matter
of trust. It was clear, whether one agrees or not, the Patriots were attempting to give Brown
the benefit of the doubt.
But that benefit abruptly ended when Brown just could no longer be trusted to keep his maturity or his emotions in check.
He had said earlier in the week when he spoke to the media that he wanted to, quote unquote, focus on ball.
And we really wanted to believe him.
And I know the Patriots did.
Fans did as well.
However, it just indicated that in his personal life,
Antonio Brown just may not be ready to do that. He had different intentions. And unlike each of the previously reported allegations, this incident was tangible. It happened on the Patriots' watch.
And in its purest form, the team just could no longer trust Brown to contain himself,
stay off of social media or his phone, and focus purely on football.
The risk had finally outweighed the reward.
The Patriots had to act, and they did so within hours of the report.
And in the final analysis, for the sake of all those involved in this situation,
you just hope that a complete and just resolution is found.
From a football standpoint, the Patriots will head into the remainder of their season
with a wide receiving core that boasts talents such as Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, Flip Dorsett, and Jacoby Myers.
So that's pretty formidable. They will certainly miss Brown's skills on the field,
there's no question about that, but they do possess more than enough talent to continue
their pursuit of another Super Bowl championship. Their defense is playing at an elite level,
they continue to dominate their opponents, they do continue to employ a strong run game as well.
And, lest one forget, they still have Tom Brady taking snaps under center.
So in short, folks, as for the field of play, the New England Patriots will be just fine
and will continue to play at an elite level.
I want to thank you for joining me and spending part of your Monday with me today.
