Starting point is 00:00:00 Well, that was brutal, absolutely brutal. The Pats can't get out of their own way and choke up a home game against the bills. This is Lockedown Patriots. You are Locked on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked On Podcasts Network, your team every day. What's happening? I'm your host Nick Cattles, born and raised in New York. England. I've been covering the Pats for the past 16 years, also the co-host of the Greg Badard Patriots podcast with Nick Cattles and a sports radio veteran. Welcome to Lockdown Patriots,
Starting point is 00:00:39 part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day. On today's live postgame show, the Pats came out ready and had a dominant first half of football. We'll break that down in the third segment. In the second segment, Drake May misses an opportunity to take the next step in the MVP conversation in race. But first, just an absolute debacle of a second half. Today's episode is brought to by Fandul. If you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit Fanduel.com and place your NFL live bets all season long.
Starting point is 00:01:16 This game was a tale of two halves, to put it simply. This was a complete meltdown in the second half. the Patriots were outscored 28 to 7 at home with a chance to win the division. Mike Vrable always talks about his team and not wanting to take a nap. Let's not take any naps. Well, the Patriots took a big old nap in the second half. And somebody tweeted at me and said, a nap, they were in a coma. This was an uncharacteristic egg that they laid in the second half.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Now, let's not get it twisted. I've been talking about this team all season long. It's been a tremendous story, but they are far from flawless. And they are absolutely vulnerable in many different ways. And when you combine those different ways today all into one big package, you get the brutal second half that we witnessed. It's as simple as that. Now, we haven't seen a lot of this happen, right?
Starting point is 00:02:15 The Patriots dominant in the first half and really embarrassed in the second half. That's the worst half of football they've played all season to these eyes. I thought it was worse than the second half or the first half against the Raiders. I thought it was a worst half than we saw against the Steelers, even with the turnovers. It was that bad. And it was just made worse because you had a chance to win the division at home. And you were completely outplayed after completely outplaying the opposition in the first half. I did not see that coming.
Starting point is 00:02:45 And I don't think anybody could have seen that second half coming. At halftime, you felt like, okay, if the Patriots just take care of business, business, they don't fall asleep to start this third quarter, then they should win this football game. Now, I wasn't running around throwing a parade. I wasn't guaranteeing a victory at the half because inevitably, you're playing against Josh Allen. And Josh Allen is the reigning MVP for a reason. The Buffalo Bills were not going to roll over and die. They have dominated this division for the past five years. And they did not want to see the Patriots celebrate and dance on their graves today.
Starting point is 00:03:22 So I at no point thought this game was over, at no point. But you still have to play a much better second half than the Patriots played. So what happened? What went wrong? Number one, the Patriots run defense was awful in the second half. In the first half, they did a good job against James Cook. They limited him. He was averaging about four and a half yards per carry, but there was nothing that was
Starting point is 00:03:45 crippling them. And then in the second half, we've seen this run defense ever since Milton Williams went out. this run defense has not been the same. We talked about it during the crossover with Joe Marino last week. We talked about it during the preview, the deep dive preview for this game on Friday's episode. The run defense is not the same. The Patriots were the best run defense in football through the first nine weeks.
Starting point is 00:04:07 In the first half, they played well against the run. But then Buffalo, Joe Brady, the offensive coordinator, give him credit. He committed to the run game in the second half. He did not give up on the run even though the Patriots were up big at halftime. He did not give up on the run, and Buffalo came out, and they ran the football down the Patriots' throats. Without Milton Williams, it's a problem. And then Robert Spillane did not play today. Mike Vrable told the media in the post game that it was an emergency-only situation for Robert Spillane.
Starting point is 00:04:36 He was only going to play if there was an emergency. And there wasn't an emergency. Your defense getting ripped apart, shredded in the second half, was not enough of an emergency to play Robert Spillane, which tells me, he's not close to being healthy and that's a problem when you have no milton williams and then you have no robert spillane on the second level that is going to be a problem for your run defense so it really began with that buffalo's ability to run the football in the second half completely knocked over this patriot's defense and because they were able to run the ball they had third and manageable and the patriots we talked about this in the crossover and i mentioned third down third down was
Starting point is 00:05:19 going to be significant in this game because the Buffalo Bills are one of the best third down offenses in football, and the Patriots have been one of the best third down defenses in football, which side would win that battle? The Buffalo Bills won that battle. They converted on eight of 14 third downs. And at one point, I think they were seven for 11. And that's just not good enough. The Patriots defense could not get off the field. Josh Allen, the bills, they continue to extend drives. They continued to convert on third down. Patriots couldn't get off the field.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Inevitably, the bills get into the red zone. And what have we talked about? If there is one thing, one thing about this Patriots team that has concerned me all year long, it has been an issue all season long, and it continues to be an issue. And I think it's actually gotten worse. And that is the red zone defense. Again, red zone defense, as soon as a team gets inside the 20-yard line, they score touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:06:18 It's as simple as that. The Patriots have kept teams away from the 20, which JJ Watt during the game highlighted. There have not been a ton of red zone possessions for this red zone defense of the Patriots, but they just cannot. They cannot stop a team as soon as they get into the red area. That's been the case all year long,
Starting point is 00:06:36 and it was the case again. I mean, you got a third and goal for Buffalo from the 15-yard line, third and goal from the 15-yard line, and you give up a touchdown pass. It's inexcusable. Harold Landry went inside on his pass rush. He said in the post game there was a miscommunication.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Yeah, I would think so because Harold Landry goes inside. Josh Allen easily extends the play to the right and throws a touchdown pass. You can't have that type of miscommunication on a critical play. It's third and goal from the 15-yard line. You cannot allow Josh Allen to escape the pocket, especially escape the pocket to his right, and allow him to extend the play. You can't do it. And the Patriots did it.
Starting point is 00:07:20 And they paid for it. So again, defensive, red zone, breakdowns over and over again. The run defense, not nearly good enough. The kickoff coverage was bad all day. It was bad from the jump, and it remained bad all day long. Mike Vrable talked about it this week. Jeremy Springer, special teams coordinator, discussed this on Thursday with the media.
Starting point is 00:07:43 It was a point of emphasis. for the Patriots. Buffalo is very good on kickoff returns. Ray Davis has been very good this year, and the Patriots just kept allowing the Buffalo Bills to get great kickoff returns. Finally, they kicked it in the end zone later in the game. They should have just done it all day long. The first two touchdown drives for the Buffalo Bills in this game, 86 total yards. They had a 42-yard touchdown drive at the end of the first half. They had a 40-year touchdown drive. They had a 44-yard touchdown drive to begin the second half. You can't give Josh Allen short fields to work with.
Starting point is 00:08:22 You're giving Josh Allen 40 yards to drive for a touchdown. I mean, you might as well just give them the six points. Your gift wrapping points to the bills. So just terrible kickoff coverage all day long. I thought offensively the Patriots, for whatever reason, went away from the run game in the third quarter. the Patriots ran for 177 rushing yards in that first half. Do you know how many run plays Josh McDaniels called in that third quarter?
Starting point is 00:08:50 One. I don't know why. I thought Josh McDaniels was tremendous in the first half, by the way. We'll get to that later on. But in the third quarter, after you just ran for almost 200 yards in the first half, you call one run play. The Patriots had 10 plays on offense. and you called one single solitary run.
Starting point is 00:09:13 I was mystified by it. I don't get it. I don't know how you run for a buck 77 in the first half and you go out there and you call one run play on the first 10 plays of the second half. It made zero sense to me whatsoever. I just, I cannot compute that in my brain. I have no idea why you went away from the run.
Starting point is 00:09:34 I would have continued to run it down Buffalo's throat until they stopped me. I would have kept bludgeoning them, but you went away from it and you just killed all the momentum of your offense. It made no sense. It made no sense. And I also think I saved this for last
Starting point is 00:09:50 because it's not why the Patriots lost the game. But I thought both of those defensive pass interference calls, I didn't think they were great. I didn't see much of a difference between the Trudebius White coverage against Matt Collins and the Marcus Jones defensive pass interference. I thought Jones played it perfectly or near perfect.
Starting point is 00:10:10 I mean, I thought that he made the contact when the ball was getting to the intended receiver. And the Carlton Davis defensive pass and afferrence, look, he had a handful of jersey. But I don't think he impeded Keon Coleman whatsoever on that play. And if you're going to call that defensive pass interference, I think you can call that defensive pass interference every single time. It was way too ticky tack on a third down for me. But it's not why they lost. They lost because their offense stalled because they went away from the run.
Starting point is 00:10:41 They lost because they couldn't get off the field on third down. They lost because they just keep on allowing touchdowns once an offense gets into the red area. They lost because they did not keep Josh Allen in the pocket in the second half like they did in the first half. They lost because their kickoff coverage was abominable all day long. That's why they lost this game. but those two DPI calls certainly did not help. All right, this game, I want to make this clear. This game is not on Drake May,
Starting point is 00:11:15 but he certainly did not help himself much in the second half. Starting point is 00:13:22 which is the next goal that we're looking at. J. Clark, 4088, it is on May. When we are talking MVP favorites, yes, it is. All right. I think we all have to embrace this idea that people are going to overreact from one bad half of football. It's already happening. It's 2025. It's social media.
Starting point is 00:13:47 And it's just going to happen. So be ready for it. I'm not going to overreact to a bad second half. The Patriots dominated in the first half. They stunk out loud in the second half. They lost the game. It was a brutal loss. But here's why I'm not going to put this loss on Drake May.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Your offense scored 31 points. 31 points is 31 points. And yes, you had a much, much better first half, and you scored 24 of those points in the first half. I get it. But when you score 31 points, I'm sorry. I'm not going to say the quarterback is the reason why you lost this football game. I'm just not going to say that.
Starting point is 00:14:27 I'm not going to say that. Drake May is far down the list. I just went through the list of items as to why you lost this game. Your kickoff coverage, your third down defense, your red zone defense. Again, you did not get much pass rush. You were undisciplined in the second half against Josh Allen. You went away from the run game. So there are a lot of reasons why you lost this game.
Starting point is 00:14:49 But I do think Drake May missed out on an opportunity today. There's no doubt. No one's going to sit there and watch this game and say Drake May was good in the second half. Now, I'm going to have to watch the All-22. I'll get a better understanding of it tomorrow. When I look at, did Drake May miss open receivers? Did he have more opportunities in front of him than it looked in real-time? I want to watch the All-22 because there is a lot that you can miss just watching it on TV. Trust me when I tell you. But this does feel like a missed opportunity. In Drake May, real-time was not good enough in the second half. He finished.
Starting point is 00:15:29 14 of 23 for 155 yards now I know people are going to overreact to that again oh 155 yards they ran for 177 in the first half okay when you run for 175 yards in the first half your quarterback guess what is not going to have a lot of passing yards because you're running it down the throat of the defense so I'm not surprised by the 155 no touchdowns an interception the interception as j j j walk called it was an arm punt it's a situation where it's third and 25 and you just throw it down the field and you hope that your guy can make a play, you hope for a DPI, and if it's a pick, it's a pick. It's inside the 10.
Starting point is 00:16:12 So I'm not going to go crazy over the pick. His pass rating was 62.8. It is a disappointing performance in the second half, hands down, especially against the Buffalo Bill's defense that I don't think is very good at cornerback. And especially when their best cornerback, Christian Benford, didn't play in this game. game. To me, you have to be better against this secondary. And I thought Drake May would play better. I thought Drake May would be much better than he was in the second half. I thought the Patriots would have more opportunities against this secondary than they seemingly did. Again, I'll have to watch the
Starting point is 00:16:45 all 22 and see if guys were getting open more than we think as we watch it in real time. But just not good enough in the second half. And there were a couple of plays that Drake May wants to have back. And what I'll say is this, you know, going back to, if I could find him, J. Clark, 4088, here's where I would put this on May is if you're in the MVP conversation, you've got to come through in the big moments. And he has all year long. But today he did not. The Patriots are up 24, 21 in the second half. The bills have momentum.
Starting point is 00:17:18 This is a chance for Drake may on the offense to do something. And on second and 10, shotgun formation, Hunter Henry is old. open. Hunter Henry gets open and Drake May air mails him. And it should have been an interception by Jordan Poyer. Fortunately for Drake May, Poyer dropped the football, but that's a bad throw. He had Hunter Henry open and he almost threw it right to Jordan Poyer. That's a bad ball. And it's a big moment. Because on second and 10, instead of getting at least seven, eight yards, if not more, we don't know what Hunter Henry would do after the catch. Instead of converting on that play, you're looking at a third and 10 and then your offensive line poops itself and you have back-to-back
Starting point is 00:17:57 penalties and all of a sudden you're looking at third and 25 and that leads to the arm punt as J.J. Watt called it. So that second and 10 play, again, it's one play, but that's the type of play when you are an MVP candidate, when you're when you are leading the MVP conversation, in my estimation, I would have voted for Drake May to be MVP before this week. If you're in that conversation. If you're that guy, you can't miss that throw. You can't airmail your open tight end when your team's defense is crumbling and you've lost all momentum at home and you're trying to win the division. You've got to make that throw. You've got to put that on Hunter Henry. You just can't miss that throw. So that's one. That's one. And then you look at when the Patriots are
Starting point is 00:18:42 down 35, 31 in the fourth quarter, it's second and five shotgun formation. Again, I don't know why they are throwing the ball again, but they're throwing the ball again. It's second and five, and I thought Drake May takes a bad sack there. Now, again, I'll watch the all 22, but Drake May had a good pocket. He had enough time to stand in the pocket, and he takes a sack. You can't take that sack. You just can't take that sack. You cannot make it a third and 12, which is what happened.
Starting point is 00:19:13 You're at second and five. You have time. Throw the ball away. Throw it at the feet of a receiver. do something you can't take that sack if you're Drake May so i thought that was a bad sack that he took now you're stuck on third and 12 and then Hunter Henry drops the football on third and 12 with the buffalo bills blitzing not not a great throw by Drake may but certainly a ball that hunter Henry has caught in the past and should have caught so that's just big i mean you're you're down
Starting point is 00:19:42 35 31 you take a bad sack and then your tight end drops the football on third and 12 he was right at the sticks, it's probably a first down there, just not good enough, just not good enough. When you need your quarterback, and yes, again, you might say, well, he's not going to be flawless. And I get that. I don't expect him to be flawless. But he can't be taking that kind of sack. And he can't be airmailing open receivers in big moments, almost throwing picks. So the MVP, you know, chance here. He had the he had the chance to make the statement against the reigning MVP, and I thought he fell short. He fell short in the second half.
Starting point is 00:20:24 And yes, he would have had to, quote, unquote, save the team. He did not save his team today. He was not good enough in that second half. Again, I'll have to watch the all 22 and see if the wide receivers were more open than they looked in real time, and that's surprising to me because I thought for sure the Patriots would win against the defensive backs as soon as, especially as soon as Christian Benford, it was announced he was going to be out. I thought for sure the Patriots-wide receivers
Starting point is 00:20:49 were going to be able to eat today, and they didn't. So it just felt like Drake May was off in the second half. He was a little bit erratic with his accuracy. And you needed him with the way the defense was playing, the way the special teams coverage was with the bills having all that momentum in the second half, you unfortunately needed May, even though the offense put up 31 points on the board.
Starting point is 00:21:13 You needed him to be almost perfect in the second half to continue to go back and forth with Josh Allen. And he just was not that today. So I thought he took a step back, the MVP conversation. I'm not going to say it's over. We'll see what happens over the next three weeks. But I thought he fell short of expectations today. And I'm sure he would agree with that.
Starting point is 00:21:34 I'm sure he would go back and look at those plays that I mentioned. And he would admit himself that he just wasn't good enough on a few of those plays and would like to have them back. All right. We can't overlook Trayvion Henderson's big day. We'll have that and more thoughts about this game coming up next. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Starting point is 00:23:15 All right. Some other notes from this game. We talked about the debacle of the second half. We talked about Drake May falling short of expectations in that second half. Let's talk about some of the other things that happened in this game because the first half did actually exist. Trayvion Henderson was tremendous today. 14 carries, 1448 yards, two touchdowns. He once again had not one, but two 50 plus yard touchdown runs. He now has four on the season. He had two against Tampa. He has two today. The explosivity. The impact from Trayvion Henderson is obvious. Again, you know, you watch him run. And sometimes he'll have eight or nine somewhat quiet runs. He'll average three, four yards of carry if that. But that's okay.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Because inevitably, he's a home run hitter. We've talked about that since draft day. He's a home run hitter. And he hit two more home runs today. That second half run was truly tremendous, where he's running to the right, it's not blocked up, he should have a loss, he reverses field, shout out to Drake May, who runs the entire length of the field with Trayvion Henderson. And it's just an explosive, fantastic run by your rookie running back. And Trayvion Henderson continues to play great football. He has come on this second half of the season,
Starting point is 00:24:28 and we look forward to what he can do over the final three weeks. So a great game from Trayon Henderson, unfortunately on my fantasy bench. Ramadre Stevenson six carries 50 yards didn't get a lot of carries today didn't get a lot of touches some of that's because Trayvon Hederson made two house calls but I am surprised that Stevenson did not run the football more in the second half I'm surprised the Patriots as I mentioned earlier did not run the football more in the second half but Ramadre Stevenson given the opportunities that he had six carries 50 yards I thought he was good Josh McDaniels I thought was brilliant in the first half there was one third and one call that I did not like Drake May shotgun formation, they threw the football. If I'm Josh McDaniels, again, I would have run the football today 45 times. I would have kept running the football down Buffalo's throat until they proved they could stop it. And he did that in the first half, for the most part. I did not like the third and one where they threw the ball incomplete.
Starting point is 00:25:24 I thought that was a waste of a play. I would have run the ball on that play. But I thought for the most part in the first half, Josh McDaniels was excellent. They had the trick play for 13 yards to Mack Collins. they rolled out the six offensive linemen at times they attacked the perimeter of the Buffalo Bill's run defense the edges I just don't know what happened in the second half I just sometimes coaches overthink and looking at that first half when you run for a buck 77 I would have come back and I would have run the football running the football once in the second half
Starting point is 00:25:58 in that third quarter you ran it once the entire third quarter I just think that's a bad job by Josh McDaniels. And he's been great and he was terrific in the first half. But I thought that third quarter got away from him. And I just don't know why they decided to stop running the football. I thought the Patriots also handled the end of the half perfectly. Perfectly.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Perfect time management. Now Buffalo could have made the Patriots make some other decisions if they used a timeout early. I mean, the Patriots had like a one-yard run, I think. And Sean McDermott did not call a time out. And so I think that ended up helping the Patriots, but I thought the end of the first half handling was excellent. I thought
Starting point is 00:26:38 Mike Vrable handled the clock perfectly. We have seen in past years that not be the case, but I thought at the end of the first half, they did a tremendous job. It was a really good response by the offense. Josh Allen, the bills, they score their first touchdown of the day. They get on the board. And you had the bills, of course, getting the football to start the second half. That was a huge drive at the end of the half. I mean, if the Patriots didn't fall apart in the second half, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln? But if the Patriots didn't fall apart in the second half, we would look back at that end of the half as the reason why the Patriots won this game, right? It would be one of the main reasons because they responded right away
Starting point is 00:27:15 and they were able to get three points on the board to bridge from the first half to the second half. Patriots don't do that. Bills get the ball. Then they get the ball again to start the second half. Again, it ended up being a disaster anyway because your second half was awful. But I thought it was really well done at the end of the half, a good response with that field goal. I thought the Patriots did a good job against Josh Allen in the first half controlling his mobility. I thought they were mostly disciplined. I thought Zach Core, defensive play caller, had a couple of well-timed blitzes.
Starting point is 00:27:48 I thought the defense did a really good job of keeping Josh Allen bottled up in the pocket, not allowing him to get to the outside and break contain. It wasn't the case in the second half, as we talked about earlier, but at least in the the first half, I thought they did a good job of keeping him in the pocket. But you did not, you did not do enough nearly on special teams either. You know, we talked about the bad kickoff coverage all day long. You also did not get much of anything from your return game. The best return you got was called back due to a way Marte Mapu hold.
Starting point is 00:28:22 So you didn't do much in the return game either. Special teams was bad today. Jeremy Springer, he's got to talk to his guys because. I thought the coverage in the return game, both were not nearly good enough. It was a rough day for Jeremy Springer at the office. It was a rough, rough day. And it was a rough day in the second half. But again, look, I'm not telling you everything is great because not everything is great.
Starting point is 00:28:48 Patriots are still 11 and 3. They still have control of this division. And you hope that they respond to what was by far their worst half of football in the second half today. It was a brutal loss. It was a brutal way to lose. Getting dominated in the second half at home with a chance to win the division. I'm sure nobody is happy about it. It was infuriating watching them play in that second half,
Starting point is 00:29:15 but it's one bad half of football. And they're still 11 and 3. They still have three games left on the road, Baltimore, next week. And then you wrap up Jets in New York. And then you finish the regular season hosting the Miami Dolphins. So the Patriots still have a lot in their control. They got to flush this second half and move forward. I'm not going to sit here and say they were exposed. They're done.
Starting point is 00:29:40 They're cooked. I think that's an overreaction to one terrible half of football. And it's just the fact is the Patriots just haven't had a lot of terrible halves of football and they haven't had really any letdowns. We've talked about it. Other teams in the NFL have letdowns every week. And the Patriots had a letdown of a second half. It was tough. But now adversity a little bit, how do you respond?
