at brightco.co forward slash locked on. That brightco.co forward slash locked on that's
bright.co forward slash locked on Patriots fans for the past couple of days we've been talking
about the Miami Dolphins and Patriots week one matchup on Sunday September 11th Hard Rock Stadium
Miami Gardens Florida we've talked about the Pats making the early trip down to Miami
to stay ahead of the weather and also a couple of prominent Pats that might be joining the ranks of
the active roster by week's end. But before we get into and dive into a little deeper when it comes
to the Miami Dolphins, we are joined by the legendary Thomas Murphy of E2GSports.com and Don Murph,
always honored, always humbled by your presence, my friend. Before we get into the ins and outs
of the Miami Dolphins, Murph, the 2022 roster, 53-man roster is now set. The practice squad is
pretty much set as well and even though there are going to be different iterations of the
Patriots roster throughout the season, we're starting to get a good idea of what this team
is going to look like on the field. Some have been optimistic. Some have been less than optimistic.
Some have essentially prognosticated doom just for the sake of doing so. But at the same time,
there are questions, there are concerns.
I think that's true of any football team at this time of year,
heading into a season and heading into an unknown season.
Murph, when you look at this roster from top to bottom,
we always say get the bad news out of the way first, but you know what?
I think our listeners deserve a little good news right off the bat this time around. When you look at this roster, what do you feel is a source of optimism for the New England Patriots heading into 2022
that makes you look and say, you know what, these guys might be better than people think?
Weapons. You guys wanted weapons, we got weapons. I think the addition of Devontae Parker is going to open up a myriad of opportunities for everybody on this team.
From Nelson Aguilar, you know, who was basically the de facto X last year.
He was out there running routes that I don't think he probably should
have been running, taking coverage that he probably shouldn't have had to. Now with Parker
on the other side, that's completely going to open up things for Aguilor, for the tight end system. There you go, Claire.
And for this running game.
We saw last year stacked boxes against the Patriots because they simply did not utilize
the outside of the hashes to any great extent.
And that's nothing against Mac Jones.
Mac Jones was smart enough to look across the, across the,
the line of scrimmage, make his,
his adjustments and do what he had to do. The short game was fantastic.
Now we're going to see the intermediate game and the, and the deep game.
Incorporated more into, into the weekly plan.
All right, that's my first optimism.
The second optimism is the fact that this Patriots backfield
is probably one of the more stacked ones, at least in the AFC East.
There isn't a group of running backs in the AFC, say AFC East or probably out West, that I would take over this one.
Never mind in the NFC where there's no running backs at all.
They're not.
Okay, what Bill is going to be able to do with this group is going to be a lot of fun to watch.
And you folks are going to be in for a treat.
The last bit of optimism, I mean, when we get into the negatives later,
is the fact that this team can still line the ball up and run behind this offensive line
when you get away from these stretch concepts.
And we start hitting stuff up in between the tackles,
start running those crack tosses outside,
and that's going to open up the wheel routes.
It takes time for this system to be implemented.
You can't do it in weeks, all right?
And Bill's been trying to do it in weeks or months with a group that has never done it before.
It really had a cold. Strange has to, you know, to a certain degree in college.
But this is a completely different animal than anything that he's seen before.
You know, when he was at school or when he was he was running in the in in during the bowl season at the Senior Bowl where he really impressed.
When they're just going out and getting after it and blowing up holes,
I have complete confidence in this offensive line as long as they have bought in.
And just give it time with this stretch concept, people.
Give it another three, four weeks.
See what happens.
And I wrote earlier that Bill kind of burned his ships.
I might have been wrong about that.
We could see a lot of the old run concepts that we've seen in the past come to the forefront this Sunday.
Yeah, and I think you will.
That's a good point.
I mentioned that in the pod on Monday here,
that I do believe that the Patriots are going to return a lot
to what we've seen in the running game previously.
And the big misconception out there is that the Patriots are trying run zone concepts
for the first time ever.
They've never done anything like this before.
Folks, just go back and look at the playbook.
I mean, Dante Skarniecki has said himself, this is nothing new.
Where it got new for the Patriots and where it still is getting new for the patriots
because they've never run the zone run off of the bootleg before that's right well i shouldn't say
never they've tried it but it was never tom strong suit meaning tom brady folks and the reason why is
because they were better suited utilizing his skill set at a whole different level so this is
something where they believe matt
can be effective in this area but they're not going to be married to it they're not going to
live and die by the sword this is going to be a gradual mix-in and i think that may cause a little
more optimism for the patriots and it should i mean they use they use tom in a way that that
played to his strengths was was three steps up three steps to the left, three steps to the right.
Nobody ever confused Tom Brady,
the greatest football player to ever play the game, with Steve Grogan.
Mack Wilson could be Steve Grogan.
I said before that draft that I didn't need the next Tom Brady.
What I need and what Bill needs is the next Steve Grogan,
and that's what he drafted.
Now we didn't see a lot of it last year.
This year we will.
And it goes, it reverts right back to the fact that there are more weapons on this team.
You're going to watch come Sunday.
Here's, here's one key.
We're going to spread it out and run it up.
Yeah, absolutely.
And definitely Mac likes his guys that can get the yak.
And believe me, they got a good one in a former Miami Dolphin in Devontae Parker, who I look forward to be one of the X factors in this game. Not going to tip my hand too much there, folks. I'll tell you why later on in the week. But Devontae definitely is one that I'm circling this weekend because I think that not only is he looking for maybe a little bit of revenge. Let's face it, that does factor in.
But most importantly, I think he matches up well against that Miami defense.
100 yards and three scores.
100 yards and three scores, folks.
You heard it here first.
You heard it from the great Thomas Murphy.
He is the dancing destroyer, the green master of disaster,
and the green king of sting as well.
Actually, the monster master of disaster.
I got that wrong. I'm going to take a lap for that one folks and when i'm done with that lap murph and i are
going to come back because as rocky balboa would say but it's not all sunshine and rainbows it's
not about how hard you get hit it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward
so what causes for concern do the new england Patriots have right now on this roster that
could mean maybe a longer season than a lot of us are hoping for in Foxborough?
Murph and I will give you the hard-hitting facts when this episode of the Locked On Patriots
podcast continues.
But first, Murph, we all have valuables in our home, everything around us that we need
to protect.
And a lot of it is valuable in nature for the jewelry variety, whether it be rings,
necklaces, gold, family heirlooms.
You want to make sure that all of this is covered.
If anything should happen, you want to be the person that always has the solution in
hand.
And we all hate insurance, folks.
I know.
I think we can all speak for that, say's safe for those that work in the industry,
and God bless you. You are great people. But our friends over at Brightco turn the whole experience
around, Murph. They absolutely have done it. Probably the easiest thing that you can do for
yourself this week is visit our good friends at Brightco. No excuses. For five bucks a month,
you can totally get comprehensive coverage,
and it won't take you more than two minutes to do so on your cell phone.
So, folks, don't delay.
Do it today.
Check it out, bright.co forward slash locked on.
That's bright.co forward slash locked on.
Patriots fans, the legendary Thomas Murphy is joining me here today from e2g sports.com
murph in the previous segment we talked about causes for optimism for the patriots and
largely they were on the offensive side of the ball because i think a lot of people need to be
reminded that the patriots are indeed putting out an nfl caliber offense this year you don't hear
that too much you hear about the dogs and the cats living together, mass hysteria, absolute pandemonium
going on in the Patriots offensive room.
This is disjuncted.
It's terrible.
I mean, to listen to this, basically you're ready to fall and just, you know, watch, you
know, all reruns for the remainder of the year and not really tune into this team.
But that we know is not going to be the case.
Patriots offense will be better than the national pundits or some local pundits want to have
you believe.
But again, Murph, it's not all about the positives here on Lockdown Patriots.
We try to bring you the most balanced coverage we possibly can.
And if we're being truthful, there are concerns on this team and concerns that could derail the season if they're not dealt with early or they're not addressed in the proper fashion.
Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are always ready for any type of scenario.
We know that. We've been there before. We've seen it.
But at the same time, you need the personnel on the field to be able to play through it. When you look at this roster, top to bottom, and I would say throw the practice squad in there as well,
because the Patriots always have good reserve players at the ready should they need them.
What are the areas for concern for you, for the New England Patriots heading into 2022?
What might keep fans up at night?
It's depth.
It's depth at the offensive line position.
It's depth at the linebacker position.
We'll just take care of both sides right here and there,
and then we'll get to my last point.
But it's depth.
Okay, if guys go down, who is going to be that next guy to step up?
People have always gotten on Bill Belichick for not spending money on superstars,
on the quote-unquote playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.
Not that they haven't had any.
All due respect to Donta Hightower and a few others.
And watching those guys walk away. But that's always been with the mind that you're going to have that second-level guy,
that second-depth guy, that guy on the depth chart,
to step up when that number one got hurt, okay?
And you're not really missing a beat, okay?
And he's able to spread that money throughout the team.
It's always been the Patriots' second team that has been able to step up when the first team got hurt or injured or traded away.
OK, we can go back to the, you know, the tie law trade, for Christ's sakes.
What are we going to do? We just traded tie law. OK, next man up.
Is there a next man up this time? We saw it last year.
The Patriots went on a fantastic run midway through the season
before things broke down in the last four weeks after the bye week,
and that was due to injury.
Look at the teams that were getting put out on that field.
Look at the teams that essentially could not get off the field
against the Buffalo Bills?
Guys were injured, not in uniform, and the guys that were in uniform had hands that looked
like Q-tips, for Christ's sakes, and they're out there trying to slow down the Buffalo
Bills, all right?
Is there depth there at the second level on defense with the linebackers?
Is there depth there on the offensive line that can step in?
You know, they made a nice move bringing Eric Ferencz back up for, you know,
off the practice squad and putting him on the 53-man roster.
I like that because we're really not sure what's happening with Wynn right now.
He's made the trip to Florida, but we're not sure what's that shuffle going to look like.
If he's not able to go, who's there and who's able to step up?
And the same thing on the other side of the ball, especially at the linebacker position.
You go and you look at it, and it's just like, sure, Judon, Bentley,
Mack Wilson, we love it. And then after that, we have Uche, Taval, and Raekwon McMillan,
and then, of course, Anthony Jennings.
Are these guys capable of stepping up and playing their role,
coming in and making plays when Bill needs to?
Are they going to be able to fill those gaps and stop this running game of the Miami Dolphins?
Because you know that's what they're going to do.
I realize that they have a lot of weapons on the outside,
but when you look at the offense that this new head coach has come from,
it's a running team.
You've got to stop the run.
If these guys are going to be able to succeed on Sunday,
they're going to need to stop the run and get off the field.
Without question.
Absolutely without question.
I agree with you.
Depth is my concern as well.
And I talked a little bit about the Miami offense yesterday here on Locked On Patriots
and gave my little dissertation.
No, because a lot of what I because a lot of what i said echoed exactly
what you said and it really does pull into mind is that this complete offense for the miami dolphins
whether it be a rushing attack or whether it be utilizing the pass catchers or the tight end out
of the backfield they're very very much locked into what they do and do well kyle shanahan did
it for years up in San Francisco.
And of course, Mike McDaniel is following that right along to the playbook as he should.
They brought in Mozart here for a reason because he knows that system and he's able to do it.
You know, Chase Edmonds is a man that's going to be able to run the football in this system.
Right. You know, Gaskin and Ahmed, did I pronounce that right? Is it Ahmed or Ahmed?
Ahmed. Sorry. Okay. I'm sorry it Ahmed or Ahmed? Ahmed. Sorry.
Okay.
I'm sorry, folks.
Nothing personal there.
Okay, there's more to this team than Jalen Waddell, okay?
There's more to this team than Tyreek Hill.
I have no problem with Bill finding a way to stymie Tyreek Hill.
We've seen him do it again and again in big games. Tyreek has gotten his one or two breakdown
plays that went for 80 yards, but
more often than not, he's kept him in check and done what
he's had to do. I think Bill will be able to do that using
the boundary lines as the 12th player on
either side. He's going to scheme something up.
What it comes down to is, and I'm giving away all my keys here, is stuffing this run
and keeping them from out of third and short. Absolutely. Very, very well said. And to do that
is not going to be an easy task. And again, it comes back to the weaknesses on this team. And
yeah, I agree with you. I think depth is the weakness on this team, but not a depth of talent, folks, because
you take a look at the talent that the Patriots have on this roster, and they're a pretty
deep roster in terms of names.
You mentioned guys like Raekwon McMillan, Josh Uche being the depth pieces along the
linebacker core, but the depth that the Patriots are relying on are guys that have had injury
history in the past and
the offensive line is the same thing you're looking at two guys in Justin Harone and in Yannick
Adjus that right now are going to have difficulty staying on the field we haven't seen enough of a
sample size that these guys can make it through the full season without having some sort of injury
or some sort of problem Haran I think that's probably a little bit misguided because he has been relatively healthy but yannick just definitely has had his issues
when he's healthy he's a solid piece but that's why you bring up a guy like james ference who is
reliable and he'll be in there you don't know right now if these guys can play through okay
and what i'm saying play through it's It's the difference between pain and injury, people.
All right. There's a difference. OK, whether or not you can play through the pain of a 17 game NFL season and be there every single Sunday when when Bill calls on you.
All right. That's what we don't know about a lot of these guys, because they simply have not played a 16, never mind a 17 game season.
OK, are you going to be sitting there in the trainer's room with your ankle hanging in a tub because it's sore?
Everybody's sore. OK, everybody, everybody freaking hurts.
All right. Get out there and do what you have to do. These are the questions that I have and that obviously Mike has.
I'm sorry I missed the show yesterday.
But those are my concerns.
And then the last one is the cornerback role.
This is a very young cornerback group, okay, that we are going to need to depend on as the season goes along.
The frontline guys, the guys, number one on the depth chart,
they're they're seasoned, solid veterans. Okay.
But I would have been a lot happier if Malcolm Butler had,
had not gotten hurt and made this team.
It was there to hold the hand of these younger guys,
especially in their first season in the NFL, because, you know, this is,
this is wow.
The light switch has been turned is going to be turned on Sunday at one
o'clock people and the young kids had,
had better be able to step up and do it.
Absolutely.
And you wonder why the Patriots are going with two guys on the perimeter
that not only bring you the most experience,
but also the most speed when it comes to Jalen Mills
and when it comes to Jonathan Jones.
Patriots have these guys out there on the perimeter for a reason.
They are the most experienced,
and they are the best options that the Patriots have right now.
Marcus Jones, Jack Jones,
a lot of Joneses on the defensive backfield this year, but absolutely.
Sean Wade, I think can, can make some, some waves this year as well.
Miles Bryant, always a factor in the slot. Absolutely. Very young.
And untested, largely untested.
Pardon me. And these are,
these are guys that are going to have to play significant stats every single Sunday.
It's not like they're sitting on the sidelines waiting for somebody to get hurt for their opportunity.
There's a rotation here that they are going to have to be a part of.
And they are going to have to be so good that these quarter quarterbacks are not going to say okay there's
the rookie that's where i'm going to go and uh and exploit for the next three or four downs
okay while somebody's getting a blow all right they're they're gonna have to step up they're
gonna have to shut down and believe me folks i love me some joneses all right i love jack jones the jack jones jersey is has been
ordered all right and it's it's um so no i i i'm confident that they can but you know it's it's
almost like dad sitting in the on the you know in the bleachers saying you're right my boy in the
game get my boy in the game it's true it really. And we'll get the opportunity to see these guys in the game.
I'm sure how much of them is going to be determined on how well the front unit is doing and how
well the top guys are doing at the position.
And that leads us quite nicely into our final topic for the day here on Locked On Patriots.
And that is season predictions.
Murph and I are going to look in to that Belichickian crystal ball and tell you our thoughts on what the Patriots might do in the 2022 NFL season.
But first, Murph, speaking of that Belichickian crystal ball, we always love to prognosticate.
We always love to make certain predictions or maybe give out an occasional hot take.

Well, Murph and his hotline days did,
but those are always, always well...
That's money well spent, folks.
And those records are permanently sealed. Back we promise you we are not going to go any farther off the rails than we
already have we are here on locked on patriots ready to wrap things up with our good friend the
don of locked on the legendary thomas murphy of eports.com. And Don Murph, we've talked about...
Hump Day edition.
Absolutely, Hump Day edition, folks.
Again, we're not going to go off the rails here.
The New England Patriots right now set to kick off the 2022 season on Sunday, 1 p.m. kickoff time,
Miami Gardens, Florida, Hard Rock Stadium, Pats Dolphins.
And Murph, you and I both know that no matter what
the outcome of this game, whether it's a win, whether it's a loss, whether it's a tie, yes,
folks, that is still possible. We know that it's going to be analyzed. It's going to be scrutinized.
Most importantly, Murph, it is going to be sensationalized. Whether it's a win or whether it's a loss,
we are going to hear either the prognostication of doom
or we're going to hear get your reservations ready for Arizona.
It's really one of the two.
That's kind of how it works now.
So, Murph, when you look into your Belichickian crystal ball,
knowing what we've talked about in the previous segments,
the strengths and weaknesses of this team,
the roster from top to bottom, the schedule from top to bottom,
what's a realistic expectation for the New England Patriots
before they take their first snap of 2022?
10-7.
10-7 is completely doable.
11-6 is a possibility.
12-5 is the ceiling, I believe.
And it is predicated on these first four games.
I think the Patriots need to take two of these first four games.
If they manage to take three, because quite frankly, folks,
nobody knows what's coming from what Bill has shown in preseason,
even in the joint workouts. All right. It hasn't,
he knows that he can turn the page back and say, okay, let's go get it.
Nobody that nobody knows what's coming right now. Okay.
And that's also,
it's a detriment to the Patriots because in week one,
because you just don't know what's coming.
What is this play caller non- caller, going to start calling plays?
And I mean McDaniel down there in Florida.
I don't mean Matt Patricia on the sidelines here.
The man's never called plays in his life, never, never, never called plays.
And all we hear is about the Patriots guys.
But, no, I think 10 and seven is a realistic opportunity.
Anything less than nine and eight is going to be a year in the top half of QBs in the NFL.
And you tell me any second year quarterback that is not named Joe Burrow right now that is considered that.
In my estimation, none.
So, no.
You're right. What's what,
what happens on Sunday is going to be mind numbing.
If the Patriots don't end up coming out of Florida with a, with a W,
I like the fact that Bill went down there just to get away from the noise,
just to get away from, you know,
guys like us sticking a microphone in his face,
asking the same question for the 80th time.
And my prediction this weekend is the Patriots are going to come out with a victory.
It's going to be 27-20.
Not bad, Murph.
We even get a game prediction from the great man himself, folks.
You never, ever go wrong with that.
And you know what? My game prediction will be made a himself, folks. You never, ever go wrong with that. And you know what?
My game prediction will be made a little bit later in the week. I'm not going to quite get my hand just yet.
We are only on Thursday.
But absolutely, we definitely get Murph's prediction.
And you know what?
Murph and I might just be like-minded this week.
But then again, we might not be.
So tune in later this week, folks, to definitely check that out.
But I agree with you.
I think Bill's move down to Miami was a smart move earlier this week.
I know some have called it a desperation move.
Well, consider the source, folks.
If there's anybody that knows desperation, it's the source of that comment.
And I'm not going to say any more than that.
I'm just going to let it go, and I'm going to let it sit from there.
But I stand behind it in any case.
But I think Bill did do the right thing when it comes to not just trying to get ahead of the weather,
but also, like you said, getting ahead of the noise, avoiding the who's going to call play question
for the nine millionth time this offseason.
You know what?
Bottom line, whether we like it in our business or not,
Bill Belichick knows who's going to be calling plays on Sunday.
And at the end of the day, folks, it's really all that matters.
Win, lose, or draw, whether it's the right move, whether it's the wrong move,
Bill's going to stand behind it.
And at the very least, you have to respect that.
And you have to understand that he's forgotten more football
than most of us will probably ever learn.
So we'll see what happens on Sunday.
It's going to be interesting in
miami gardens and this is going to be uh has all the markings for a really really fun one
especially with all of the expats and ex-dolphins lining up on either side talked a little bit about
that earlier this week whether it be justin bethel or rayquan mcmillan or davante parker who i do
believe again folks could be an x factoractor in this one. Yeah, absolutely.
And you heard Murph's prediction on that as well.
Not just the game production.
Absolutely.
You know what?
