Starting point is 00:01:31 And folks, as many throughout the country continue to celebrate the Halloween season, your New England Patriots are becoming increasingly lost in their very own house of horrors. Mac Jones completing 12 of 22 pass attempts for 110 yards, two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown
Starting point is 00:01:49 before being relegated to the bench for the second straight week. New England once again looking futile in all three phases as they suffer a blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints 34-0. Week 5, Gillette Stadium. Here today to help me break it all down, help us make sense of the chaos, is our good friend, the counter-Murphy Fisto himself, the legendary Thomas Murphy.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Murph, I always thank you for coming to me in friendship today, Don Murph, but we need that Don Godfather leadership today. I don't even want to ask you what your thoughts were on what we saw yesterday on the field. No, you don't. You really don't. And I am serious. Don't call me Shirley.
Starting point is 00:02:32 It was downright pathetic. It was apathetic. You can throw any other thetic in there that you want. Do I look happy? Do I look happy right now? I hand these people keys to win and they don't turn them. They don't even look at them. They left the keys in the bowl.
Starting point is 00:02:51 It didn't even get to the car. What we saw yesterday from Mac was more of what we saw last week. And it was the first key that I cut was Mac needs to get back to being Mac and being that good decision maker, being that guy that is may not win you the game, but definitely isn't going to lose you the game. And for the past two weeks, he's done everything in his power to lose you football games. Now, you can we can talk about the offensive line woes. We can talk about the lack of separation by our wide receiver group. We can talk about the fact that you're averaging about 2.0 yards per carry.
Starting point is 00:03:40 And these things all feed into Mac's comfort zone. But Mac just does not look comfortable out there. He does not look decisive out there. And quite frankly, I expected more out of a Bill O'Brien offense than what we've seen the past two weeks. Yeah, very well put. And you mentioned the word thetic, or I should say the suffix thetic to a word. The effort level that we saw yesterday was just i think one step above an anesthetic if you want
Starting point is 00:04:10 to really there you go where we need to go so it was it was just an abysmal effort it was just an unacceptable level of enthusiasm sense of urgency because we've seen and we heard all week long murph that this team was committed to getting back on track, demoralizing loss to the Dallas Cowboys, wake everybody up, coming into this game, this is your chance to prove yourself. And their effort was actually worse than it was in week four against the Dallas Cowboys, the New Orleans Saints. I give them credit.
Starting point is 00:04:41 They at least came to play competitively yesterday. Alvin Kamara, 73rd career touchdown on 22 carries, 80 yards. Derek Carr, you can tell that shoulder is still hurting him. 18 of 26 through 183 yards, but Michael Thomas got more involved than I thought he would be. Four catches for 65. New Orleans ends a two-game skid, so they're riding high coming out of New England right now now yeah saints out gain the patriots 304 to 156 in the yard battle it's just not going to get it done it just is not going to get it done and you mentioned earlier about mac jones and the difficulties that he's had obviously the offensive line is in shambles and we're going to get the offensive line in just a moment because it really
Starting point is 00:05:23 i think deserves its own own at this point. And I'm as baffled by this as you are. But inability to make sound decisions when you need it most is something that an NFL quarterback has to be able to do to succeed. Right. Mac's done it in the past. It's really mind boggling as to why all of a sudden these last couple of games, he just completely lost the ability to process. That process is broken. Evan Lazar said this very well on Patriots.com following the game last night
Starting point is 00:05:51 and said the problems that Mac is showing with his mechanics, with his body language, with his attitude, sometimes can be the kiss of death for a quarterback. The Patriots have the ability to bring it back. Mac Jones has the ability to bring it back. But if they don't see results and positive results soon, you have to start wondering whether or not this relationship is broken beyond repair. I think that's a valid question at this point. And two weeks ago, I never
Starting point is 00:06:15 would have thought I'd say that. Yeah. And I agree, but I've been begging, begging Bill to go out and grab guys off of the street to come in here and play tackle. Lael Collins is out there. He's been cleared to play. They have not kicked the tires on him. There are places to go on the offensive line. And again, folks, we are going to get into that a little bit more. You mentioned Lael Collins. I want to get your take on that and what we saw from the existing members of this unit right now which is clearly not getting it done but obviously being under pressure is throwing mac jones and it's throwing him even more than it has in the past mac has always had difficulty and we've said this so many times here who does it
Starting point is 00:06:56 waves murph he's had difficulty with the second third level blitz getting pressure on him open at the top of his drop in the wrong direction causes him to make some bad decisions that was last year this year we're seeing a lot more of the same mac has been under pressure on more than 45 percent of his throws on average last night i believe it was 45.8 percent of his throws that he was under pressure he has little to no choice but to make bad decisions. And last year, Mack was settling for the short yardage checkdowns, which weren't getting much. First, second down, couldn't convert on third, have to punt the ball away. Now, he's not even getting those short yardage checkdowns.
Starting point is 00:07:37 He's not completing the short game. He's not getting the time. So he's forcing the ball into even worse situations on deep shots. And they're either falling incomplete or they're being overthrown or, in worst case scenario, they're being intercepted for pick sixes because they're underthrown or thrown improperly. Matt Jones has now thrown more pick sixes at home in Foxborough than Tom Brady did in his entire career. Yeah, it's amazing. It really is.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Although I think that's a little more of a testimony to Tom's greatness than it is anything else. But bottom line, I mean, that is an unacceptable number for a guy that is not even a third of the way through his third season. Jones's discomfort in the pocket has led to a dismantling of his confidence. Mack does not look like the same confident guy that was throwing the ball in his season. And even at times last year, Mack still looked like he had not hung his head, even though the Patriots were struggling and they were having their own problems on the offense last year. But his mechanics as well. And I think that's what, going back to Evan's point,
Starting point is 00:08:48 where do you go to correct that if this is not something that the Patriots can see marked improvement in and in short order, then you have to start wondering whether or not this fracture is really about to become a complete break. And again, it's a tough thing for Patriots fans to accept because for 20- plus years here in New England, we weren't used to having quarterback problems. It's just, it's a different circumstance, I think, for everybody to be in. It really is. Whether Mack wants to admit it or not, he is sped up. This has led to his poor mechanics. This has led to his poor decisions. The fix is the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:09:27 The fix is these guys buying in. Bill Belichick is giving raises to guys who are out there playing like they don't give a damn. All right. And bringing in guys off the street who should be your third and fourth options. And they're being put out there as the first option. I said last week that it's tough to live a life of the next man up and have these, these players get hurt and not have a next man to be up or, you know, the, the,
Starting point is 00:09:57 the drop off to be so significant that you can't live this way. And Mac Jones simply cannot live this way the patriots defense um i'm sure we'll get to that in a minute has taken a beating as well absolutely and yeah we definitely will get to the defense because it was simply a uh a terrible effort uh all the way around uh yesterday offense defense special teams uh the Patriots did not execute anything well. We normally like to try to find silver linings in the loss, and we try to be as positive here, give you our honest opinion in every aspect of the game. Even I simply cannot find one from yesterday. Before we move off the offense, the Patriots were 1- 14 on third down last week. All right. One of my weekly keys is to own third down.
Starting point is 00:10:48 All right. They were one for 14. Now, the biggest reason because of that is because on most of those attempts, it was more they were looking at needing to gain at least six yards to get that first down. All right. Early down success is just not happening, and this limits what Bill O'Brien and Mack are able to do with this group of receivers. And once Pop Douglas went down, it hindered them even more.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Yeah, and the Patriots now facing that potential loss for a week six matchup coming up against the Raiders. Pop Douglas going out with a head injury. Juju Smith-Schuster also going out with a head injury. Murph, you know as well as I, the league has definitely tightened their restrictions on players being released from head injuries to get back in the game. You're possibly looking at both of these guys not being able to suit up, which means Taequann Thornton hopefully will uh be available for this don't bet on it and the
Starting point is 00:11:51 patriots definitely need to activate kashan buddha in this case he needs to come off of that double secret probation folks uh this is no time to be dean wormer because guess what you know england patriots are at 0.0. They're not even D-Day. Daniel Simpson Day has no grade point average. Yeah, exactly. At this point, Hoover, Kroger, and even Dorfman are in better shape than you're in the England Patriots. So it's time to loosen the reins a little bit and get these guys back in the game. My suggestion to you is to start drinking heavily.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Yeah, absolutely. Listen to Murph, folks. He's pre-med. You know what? I think we all need a little National Lampoon General House in our lives after this. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:12:32 folks, especially when you take a look at the fact that the New England Patriots now falling to one and four for the first time since 2000, Bill Belichick's first season coaching the New England Patriots. Come full circle. The worst two losses of bill belichick's coaching career week four and week five of the 2023 nfl season and the pats suffering their first shutout since the 16th and nothing lost against the buffalo bills on october 2nd 2016
Starting point is 00:12:58 but the only difference was there murph there was a lot of anticipation and a lot of excitement in the air because starting under center the following week it there's a gentleman by the name of Tom Brady who led the Patriots to a Super Bowl. How far cry we are from those days. But, folks, there are still games to be played, and the New England Patriots still have to find ways to get through. And, folks, as I said to open the show today, the Patriots have serious problems and they need serious people to solve them. One of the most serious problems they have is along the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Murph and I have danced around the subject. We're going to hit it head on when this episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast continues, a proud part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Starting point is 00:14:35 Patriots fans, thank you once again for joining us here today on Locked On Patriots. And of course, joining me as always on Monday is the man that Mondays were created for here on Locked On Patriots, the legendary Thomas Murphy of E2G Sports. And Don Murph, we've already discussed the futility that the Patriots showed in their passing game yesterday. Also would like to point out that the running game wasn't much better. Ramondre Stevenson averaging under three yards per carry is something I wouldn't have called out in my preseason bingo card. Ezekiel Elliott has not been much better, but Mack has not had the time to be able to make passes,
Starting point is 00:15:11 and the runners simply cannot find holes to get there for one major reason, and that is this offensive line has been more of a turnstile machine than it has been a protective unit. Murph, you know as much as anyone in the business, if not more, about the big round men up front that it takes to keep the quarterback upright and the running backs running. Talk us through this, Murph. What is wrong with this offensive line? A bunch of old men playing a young man's game.
Starting point is 00:15:45 You know, Brown looks terrible out there. He looks slow. He looks plotting. He's reaching for blocks that he never had to in his past. It was really awful. I don't understand the fact that, you know, Riley Reif is activated and he was the starting right tackle at the beginning of camp, but he only subbed in at guard yesterday,
Starting point is 00:16:11 while Vidarian Lowe went wire to wire. He went the entire game at right tackle yesterday. I don't get it. Honestly, I don't understand it. I don't know what this rotation is about, and I've really got to, got to ask, you know, where,
Starting point is 00:16:27 where's the coaching in this? Because I don't see this team getting better. I really don't. I don't see this unit getting better at all. And, um, when these guys just talking to walls and the walls aren't listening, or is it just,
Starting point is 00:16:42 as I said, a bunch of old guys who just can't get it done anymore adrian clem coming in was automatically supposed to give this unit cohesion that they did not have last year uh this team looks more out of sync now than they did under matt patricia which is really saying something and i will yield the understanding about a rash of injuries going through this team any unit that suffers the type of injuries the Pats offensive line have are going to have their difficulties. So I am sympathetic to that, and I do acknowledge that.
Starting point is 00:17:13 But when you put someone like a Verderian Lowe, like you said, out there continuously, Verderian allowed a sack in four quarterback hurries yesterday. He's allowed 25 quarterback pressures since joining the team and in some of that he hadn't played a major role in this team moving forward obviously the injuries and the difficulties that the bats have had have forced him to right tackle duty starting right tackle duty a pretty extensive snap count as murray alluded to earlier but when you're going through that difficulty plus you have a tony o'maffi now who's starting to look like a rookie.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Six quarterback pressures yesterday. At one point, you could see both Bill O'Brien and Bill Belichick putting him an earful on that sideline. Old men and kids. I'm sorry. It's just that old men and kids. No, because the left side is where you're having difficulty too. Trent Brown is kind of giving some of these ole-type moves. The Patriots have yet to find that consistent five-man unit that can get the job done. You're
Starting point is 00:18:10 five games into the season. That's a problem. It is. It's a real problem. The same starting five have not been there in consecutive games all year. Now, you can ride that as far as you want. These are still professionals that are supposed to go out there and get a job done, and I'm not seeing the effort. I'm really not. I'm not seeing the buy-in from these guys, especially the new guys that Bill brought in this year, when there was serious talent out there that could have been had when free agency started
Starting point is 00:18:40 and they just didn't want to spend the money on it. Absolutely. You mentioned L. Collins earlier, coming in with a pretty good pedigree, agency started and they just didn't want to spend the money on it absolutely you mentioned what l collins earlier coming in with a pretty good pedigree spent time with the house cowboys obviously most recently with the cincinnati bangles uh word has it that he's working out well seems to be clear good yep i mean no bring him in there even be a hesitation with the patriots about yeah there should not be a hesitation with what you're looking at in the, in this, this lineman room, when, what you're looking at from this group after five years, after five games, and you just, you cannot see the upside of at least bringing this man in to kick the tires and see what he has left. You're not doing your job.
Starting point is 00:19:20 You're not doing your due diligence. If you are not, for the life of me, calling to Marco Jones' agent and seeing if there's some interest from him to come in here, because you got to ask the question, do you want to come join a 1-in-4 team? But money speaks, and these guys need to get paid. They got Christmas coming up just like the rest of us. Get the paycheck. Get the paycheck. And both of these players are better than what you have on the right and left side of this of this offensive line right now.
Starting point is 00:19:58 They really are. And I have been a Trent Brown fan since the day he walked in here. But right now he looks old and lazy and apathetic. And that's after he got a bump in pay. It just feels like the air's been let out of the balloon. With the injuries last week to Gonzalez, with the injury last week to Judon, it just took all the wind out of the sails across the board. You saw it on the next series of downs, and I've seen it in front of me for the past six quarters of football. And you can't live that way. You can't succeed that way. These guys have to buy in. They have to be engaged.
Starting point is 00:20:44 They have to want to win. And with the exception of David Andrews. David Andrews, you don't deserve this. You really don't. Because he's out there busting his hump on that offensive line every single down. And quite frankly, the Patriots Nation doesn't deserve this. The fans of the New England Patriots don't deserve this. Yeah, absolutely, folks, without any question. And it's going to be a long road back. And it's also going to be a long road back for their counterpart,
Starting point is 00:21:13 their defensive counterpart, the defensive line, as well as the secondary, because you're missing two key components there on the opposite side of the ball, Murph. And we're going to talk about the defense in just a minute, folks, because it wasn't just a putrid offensive effort that prevented the Patriots from getting the job done yesterday for the first time the defense started to look mortal and that's a big concern for this Patriots team because if you're faltering in all three phases could end up being a very long season here in New England Murph and I will talk about defensive woes and the question on everybody's mind. Mailbag Monday because we are still bringing it, folks. Stay tuned and stay locked in. A proud

Starting point is 00:23:13 for making LockedOnPatriots a daily part of your New England Patriots coverage and hopefully your first listen every day. Folks, we continue to break down the Patriots' 34-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints. I can't think of any other adjectives to describe it, so we're just going to leave it at that. And here today to help us break it all down, of course, as he always does each and every Monday,
Starting point is 00:23:36 it's why we call it hashtag Locked On Murph Monday, is the legend himself, Thomas Murphy of E2G Sports. Murph, we've talked about Mac Jones in the offense. We've talked about the offensive line and the woes that happened there. But I think we saw just how much this team is going to miss both Matthew Judon and Christian Gonzalez in this defense yesterday. The Patriots knew with Judon on the shelf, that task was going to be very difficult. And as expected, Josh Uche, Anthony Jennings, they man the edges. We pretty much figured those would be the guys to do it. Dietrich Wise played on the interior alongside the defensive tackles,
Starting point is 00:24:17 and we saw Deion White get a good amount of reserve look at the linebacker position. They still couldn't generate a consistent pass rush Patriots only two sacks on Derek Carr Juwan Bentley got his first sack of the season that looked like a good series um the other came on a coverage sack from Miles Bryant not a bad look for him but the defensive front failed to generate any additional quarterback hits or tackles for loss and with the personnel unlikely to change simply because I think they have to go with what's in the cupboard, we're really seeing firsthand just how difficult it's going to be to replicate Matthew Judon's prowess in that defensive front.
Starting point is 00:24:58 Your thoughts on the Patriots defensive line yesterday and what it looks like now without Matthew Judon at that second level to help out. It's just a huge hole to fill. The way that he sees the game and the way that he attacks the game, the way that he lives for this game. I need to see more Keon White standing up. I need to see if he can be the man that we all thought he was in college and that, you know, how happy we were when he was drafted. I didn't, I did not see enough of him yesterday. Um, you know, he had his hand in the dirt. He was standing up. I thought he was, he was, uh, getting some pressure, but he just wasn't given enough opportunities to do it. They need to do a better job of stopping the run containing and please set an edge.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Can we set an edge? Said before the game that we had to funnel this running attack up the middle where the Patriots still had a chance to hold them under three yards a carry, and it just didn't happen yesterday. Again, Alvin Kamara was able to find some traction, and only his second game back from suspension. So Patriots knew they were going to have to control that running game of New Orleans and they weren't able to do it. And it allowed Derek Carr to be able to get some free reign and hit guys like Michael
Starting point is 00:26:17 Thomas and Chris Olave. And those guys- Even with the bum shoulder. I wanted him throwing to the outside all day long with that bum shoulder, and hopefully the Patriots are going to be able to pick him up. But it didn't happen. It didn't happen because simply they did not get the pressure on him that was going to make him get rid of the ball just a tick early
Starting point is 00:26:36 or just a tick late or just a tick off balance. You have to have it. When it comes to the loss of Gonzalez, I don't think the Patriots will replicate what he brought you, even with J.C. Jackson back. I do believe that with Jackson getting a little more acclimated each week and Jonathan Jones returning to form, that the Patriots secondary can at least be competitive and try to keep things close in that defensive backfield. Maybe a little better suited to withstand the loss of Gonzalez than the defensive line is to withstand Judon's loss. The Joneses getting back is paramount for the Patriots to be able to do anything in the last two-thirds of this season. They need to get back. They need to get healthy. These were the bedrocks coming into this season, and unfortunately, the Joneses have been sitting on the sidelines. That does lead me quite
Starting point is 00:27:26 nicely into my final question for you today which really is a pseudo mailbag question murph because my dms were flooded the same as yours were last night of patriots fans wondering where do the patriots go from here i mean we've heard all of the colloquialisms about bill belichick having the buck stop directly at his desk in his post post-game remarks, Bill alluded to changes. Starting over was, I think, the big quote that came from that. Spoke to the media again on Monday morning, still very terse, and said, I'm going to do what's best for the football team. You're Bill Belichick.
Starting point is 00:28:00 What is best for the football team? Where do you start? And what does starting over really entail at this point? Is hitting this depth chart and cleaning it out. I'm sorry. I want Jamarco Jones in here. I want Lyle Collins in here. I want this.
Starting point is 00:28:16 I want some semblance of a professional offensive line to take care of Mac Jones in some way, shape or form, you know, demotions from the, um, in, uh, on the depth chart from the guys right here that, that aren't here and get these guys up to speed as quickly as you can. And, uh, and just protect the kid. It really is. I, I, I'm not making excuses for Mac Jones people. He has been dumber than dirt. Okay. But I can understand why that's happened. Okay. I've sat there on a, I've seen lines, um, not be able to come together and, and quarterbacks be ruined. And I don't want to see that out of Mac Jones because while I don't think he will ever be a MVP of this league. I do think that he's a solid quarterback.
Starting point is 00:29:06 I did like the draft pick when they made it, and I still like it now. You have just got to be able to protect him. We can go back to 2007, 2009, whenever you want. When we were all asking, is Bill trying to get Tom killed and Scar coaching these guys up and fixing things but the guys that are here right now couldn't be fixed by Scar. They can't. They couldn't be fixed by the greatest offensive line coach in the history of this game. A man who I think should be in
Starting point is 00:29:39 Canton for the way that he teaches this game and the things that he's been able to do with fourth round, sixth round, eighth round picks and making them rich and famous. Right now, the talent is not there on the offensive line and you need to go out and get some. And these are the last two ducks on the pond that you can grab. And I think they're better than the ducks that you have in your pen. Yeah, without any question. I think starting over and changes, folks, does mean from the roster. For those of you that are thinking a change means a changing of the guard at starting quarterback or a changing of the guard at the coach's chair, which I think is a fair game conversation for the
Starting point is 00:30:20 end of the season. That's not going to happen in the season, folks. It is definitely not going to happen. Unless there is a catastrophic breakdown of epic proportions, and before you start saying, well, how can it get much worse than being outscored 72-3 in your last two games, I mean a catastrophic breakdown of the players simply tuning Bill Belichick out or refusing to play for him. That's the only way that i could possibly see a change being made for the good of the franchise but other than that bill bellichick is going to
Starting point is 00:30:51 be your coach this year because there's simply no one you can bring out here on the street or anyone on this staff that'll be able to get the maximum ability out of the players the way bill bellichick can and you're not going to make the change at the quarterback position. Bailey Zappi last night came in, completed three of nine passes in 22 yards in garbage time. They released him and nobody picked him up. Nobody thought, yeah, let's pick Bailey Zappi up. They released him.
Starting point is 00:31:20 He is not a better quarterback than Mac Jones. You want to, I asked her in the game, well, just throw Will Greer out there. That's because, because Zappappy wasn't doing anything either. Let's see what Will can do. You know, Mac Jones is the quarterback. You've got to figure out a way to get it done with him. Please get it done with him. Rework this front line.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Get somebody back there that can run in as a lead blocker for this rushing attack. You need some kind of fullback in the backfield to help these guys. And that starts with the Patriots returning to the drawing board. And that starts now in their preparations for a week six matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders and old friend Josh McDaniels at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. More Farrell Brown. He's the last man to score a touchdown for you. Exactly. Get Farrell Brown in the back. Exactly. And it took some trickery to do it. So you know
Starting point is 00:32:16 what, folks, if that doesn't sum up what the New England Patriots offense has been like in the last three weeks, I don't know what does. Of course, the Monster Keys, and I will be venting a little bit. I will. You know, I've got to have it. See this face? Do you see this face? This is not a happy face, people. I heard that.
Starting point is 00:33:18 It's embarrassing a little bit. Check it out. We'll be back. We'll be back. Maybe at the end of the week we'll team up again and go over the keys to victory you know i i want to thank you all out there too over 3 000 people have checked out the keys of victory over the last two weeks and and and thank you michael because a lot of that's because of you oh no a lot of that is because of the keys honored to bring you the keys here on locked on patri Patriots, and I've said it. If you turn the keys, you go to the top.
Starting point is 00:33:46 You don't turn the keys, you're never heard from again. Last two weeks, no keys. Folks, turn the keys. Turn the keys, and that's the springboard to success for the New England Patriots. But in the meantime, we hope you continue to observe and absorb those
Starting point is 00:34:02 keys here on Locked On Patriots. Folks, thank you so much for taking time out to join us here today. On behalf of my good friend, the Count of Murphy Fisto himself, the legendary Thomas Murphy, I'm Mike DeBate, reminding you to stay safe and to stay well and to be the change you wish to see in the world. Starting point is 00:34:24 Pharaoh fullback Brown. Make it happen. Start from zero. Let it be written, so let it be done.
