Greetings and salutations, Patriots Nation, and thank you so much for joining me here
on this Thursday episode of the pod.
My name is Mike DeBate, your host of the Locked On Patriots podcast, which of course is a
proud part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.

the Twitterverse, please be sure to follow the Lockdown Patriots account as well at LO underscore
Patriots. Pats fans, it seems like a lifetime ago that we were all sitting here wondering how the
Patriots would invest their new financial windfall.
$65-plus million in cap space available.
How would they invest it?
Well, throughout the last four days, we found out exactly how the Patriots will be investing
it.
They'll be investing it big time.
A lot of new faces headed to Foxborough.
Exciting times for all Patriots fans.
And yesterday here on the pod, we began a series that will take place throughout the
course of the next couple of weeks here on Locked On Patriots to help you get to know
some of those new faces that you'll be seeing in Foxborough this spring, summer, and of
course, into the fall.
And we started with the first free agent to find his way to Foxborough on Monday morning,
Janu Smith, formerly of the Tennessee Titans, now of your New England Patriots, who will
be playing tight end for the Pats this year.
And of course, one of the many great things about being able to work for the Locked On
Podcast Network is you have an endless pool of experts to choose from when you want to
know and need to know all the intricate details about what makes guys like John O'Smith such
amazing football players.
Tyler Rowland, host of Locked On Titans, joined us here and he gave us a lot
of insight on John U. Smith, both from a personal and professional standpoint. Well, today here on
the pod, we're going to get to know the second gentleman that's going to comprise that two-man
tight end set that has everyone in Foxborough buzzing. Hunter Henry, formerly of the Los
Angeles Chargers, a gentleman that I've had the privilege of covering during my time on the
Chargers beat, will now be a New England Patriot.
But admittedly, my sharp eye has been diverted the last couple of years, primarily focusing on covering the New England Patriots.
So the insight I can provide on Hunter Henry will only take us so far.
Luckily, a good friend of mine who just happens to be my colleague at the Locked On Podcast Network,
one-third of the hosting trio of Locked On
Chargers, Dave Droegemeier, joins me here on the pod today, and we will talk all things
Hunter Henry.
What makes Hunter such a prolific in-line tight end in the NFL?
But we'll also talk about why Hunter Henry might be one of the most complete tight ends
in the game today.
Last but certainly not least, we'll be talking about Hunter on and off the field, the presence
he's likely to build in the community here in New England,
and also how much of a mentor he can be to young tight ends like Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene.
Folks, today on the pod, it's part two of Getting to Know You, Hunter Henry,
and we get to know a little bit more about Hunter with Dave Droegemeier of Locked On Chargers in just a moment.
But first, we start with the news of the day, and just like Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, folks, we've got lots to talk about here on Thursday, and we start with
news that broke on Wednesday evening, something we didn't get a chance to address yesterday here
on the pod, and that is the return of yet another old friend to the Foxborough fold.
Linebacker Kyle Van Noy agreeing to a two-year deal with the New England Patriots.
That deal can pay him up to $13.2 million.
And this deal was heavily rumored for quite some time, at least back to the time we found out that
Kyle Van Noy was going to be released by the Miami Dolphins. From a financial standpoint,
this deal was very low risk, a two-year deal worth up to $13.2 million with incentives.
From a logistical standpoint on the field, Van Noy comes back and immediately
shores up the Patriots' pass rush, and I believe will also serve as a great mentor to guys like
Josh Uche, Anthony Jennings, Juwan Bentley, even Chase Winovich to a certain extent. But make no
mistake about it, this is not just a mentorship role that Kyle Van Noy is being asked to come here
and assume. He's going to be one of their more versatile defenders. He's capable of playing on the edge, he can play off the ball,
and the veteran leadership he can bring to this team will complement guys like Dante Hightower and Matt Judon quite nicely.
So much like they did with the tight end position on offense,
the Patriots looking at the linebacker position on defense,
realizing that there were some holes there,
and the Patriots act quickly to fill them with capable veterans and players
that will make an immediate impact on this team in 2021.
But it wasn't all arrivals for the New England Patriots.
They did have some departures as well.
The first of which we learned about on the very early morning hours of Thursday, when
All-Cardinals Howard Balzer reported that the Patriots had in fact parted ways with
defensive tackle Bo Allen due to a failed physical and also wide receiver Marquise Lee.
And to be honest, neither one of these moves surprised me at all.
Lee definitely had some upside, but his opting out of the 2020 season
without the Patriots really seeing what he could do on the field
probably made him expendable.
I fully expect that Marquise Lee will hook on with another team
and I actually think he'll go on to a pretty good career.
With regard to Bo Allen, who I do assure you, folks, does exist.
I know there's still some question marks out there on that.
I can't necessarily blame you for feeling that way, but I assure you, he is a living,
breathing human being.
Bo Allen being released because of a failed physical is definitely not a shock.
He spent the entirety of 2020 on the sidelines.
As a result, the Patriots know they need to shore up that nose tackle position.
They have started to do that with a couple of good additions.
Henry Anderson, who I absolutely love for this team.
I also like the acquisition of Devon Godchow.
If I'm being honest, I think they need one more addition in there, whether or not that's
someone they target in the NFL draft or whether or not it's another free agent.
I would love to see one more depth piece added along the interior of the defensive line.
Obviously, the team losing Adam Butler yesterday to the Miami Dolphins.
Hopefully, they can strike a deal to bring back Lawrence Guy.
So with that, we say arrivederci to Bo Allen and to Marquise Lee.
But unfortunately, that wasn't the only departure to be reported on Thursday.
And I say this with all respect to the feelings and the sensibility of my good friend and
colleague, the Countess of Clas herself, Miss Claire Clasie Claire Cooper, that it fills
me with deep regret to inform you all that Ryan Izzo has been traded away from the New
England Patriots to the Houston Texans.
And because of time restraints here on Locked On Patriots, I'm not able to offer a moment
of silence for my good friend Claire right now. but if we're being honest, Izzo being
traded away from New England was probably a foregone conclusion once the team had signed
both Janu Smith and Hunter Henry.
For what it's worth, Ryan Izzo was the leader in the tight end room last season.
13 receptions, 199 yards.
I thought he did a fairly good job of blocking last year for the Pats, especially against the run, but ultimately I think he had a lot placed on his shoulders. Izzo was originally
a 7th round pick, drafted 250th overall in 2018, and he was being asked to play the tight end one
role. That's a role he simply wasn't suited for. I will say this, Izzo's got great size for his
position, again a solid run blocker, I think he's got better hands than he gets credit for.
He'll go to Houston, and I expect him to continue a pretty good career.
So, between the departures of Lee, Allen, Izzo, we've had enough with the goodbyes,
haven't we, Patriots Nation?
Well, not so fast.
This one is a fond farewell, though, however.
And, at least in my opinion, a little bit of a surprise.
Thursday morning, former Patriots safety Patrick Chung,
that's right, I said former Patriots safety, took to his social media accounts to announce his
retirement from the NFL after 11 seasons. At 33 years of age, Chung will leave the NFL after
amassing 153 total games, 11 career interceptions, and one touchdown. And the statement he issued
reads as follows, quote,
I want to say thank you to the Patriots organization, my family, my fans, the coaches, just everyone.
I'm in tears writing this, but I've decided to hang up the cleats.
Bill, Mr. Craft, and then in brackets he puts Mean Mug, thank you for giving me the opportunity
to play for your team for 11 years.
I love you.
Bill, for teaching me life on and off the field.
I will not forget that.
To my teammates, trainers,
equipment team, video guys, meal
room employees, janitors, etc.
I love you guys and ladies. Thank you
for being the rock to the organization,
for cleaning up, feeding, taking care
of me for 11 years. You will forever
be family, but it's time to start a new
life. Patriot until I die,
love you all. And of course, we'll all remember Patrick Chung's two tours of duty in Foxborough,
especially the second time around, where he was really put in a position to showcase his
talents by Bill Belichick and the Patriots coaching staff.
He played a key role in helping the team win three Super Bowls, and was considered one
of the best strong safeties in the NFL for much of his career.
Again, this was a little bit of a surprise to me,
because even though Patrick Chung did opt out of the 2020 season,
a lot of the hints he had been dropping on social media lately indicated he was ready to come back.
But ultimately, Patrick Chung made the best decision for himself and his family,
and you cannot fault him for that.
His toughness, his field awareness, and his skill are going to be sorely missed by the Patriots on the field.
But if I'm being honest, I think the most prominent impact Patrick Chung had on his teammates
was setting an example of hard work and perseverance. His first stint with New
England may have been considered an underachievement, but Patrick Chung fought to
improve his skills and he became a better student of the game. He parlayed that work ethic into an
impressive career that, in my opinion, should earn him a red jacket
in the Patriots Hall of Fame someday. Sometimes the greatest gift an athlete can be given is a
second chance. Patrick Chung got that chance, and he utilized it as well as anyone. Pat,
congratulations on a great career. It's been my honor to cover you up here in New England for the
past few seasons, and I sincerely wish you and your family all of the best in your future endeavors.
And with that, Patriots Nation, we decide to lighten the mood a little bit, and we get
to know one of the newest and one of the most exciting acquisitions the Patriots have made
in the last couple of days.
Dave Droegemeier, host of the Locked On Chargers podcast, will join me here in just a moment
and we'll discuss the on-field and off-field prowess of new Patriots tight end
Hunter Henry.
This when the Locked On Patriots podcast continues.

Patriots fans, it's obvious that your favorite team in Foxborough knew that they needed some
help with the tight end position on monday they addressed that in a big way signing johnny smith to a four
year 50 million dollar deal the pats finally had their move tight end and here on the pod yesterday
we talked a little bit about johnny smith getting to know him from tyler roland of locked on titans
but the patriots were not done yet, folks.
On Tuesday, they figured, why not go out and get the two best tight ends available on the market?
Let's bring back that 12-man personnel.
The glory days of the two tight ends set.
Well, the Patriots can run it this year, folks,
and they might be able to run it better than any other team in football.
Hunter Henry is a New England Patriot, and I love saying that, but you know
who doesn't like saying that? My guest today. He is one-third of the hosting tandem of Locked
On Chargers. My good bud, Dave Droegemeyer, stops by the pod. Dave, thanks for coming
by and welcome the Locked On Patriots.
Of course, always happy to have a conversation about football with you, Mike. Yes, I'm not extremely happy to see Hunter Henry go to the Patriots,
considering I am a Chargers analyst and a Chargers fan at heart.
But, I mean, business is business.
And, you know, you talked about the two tight end sets.
I mean, we know that when the Patriots offense was at its most dynamic,
it's when they had two tight ends on the field that they didn't
have to take off the field and could handle multiple responsibilities. That's partly what
they're going to get with Hunter Henry. That is what they're going to get with Hunter Henry.
And I mentioned, you mentioned partly, and I think that's a good preface for us to get into
our discussion today on exactly what Henry will bring to the table.
But an amazing career in Los Angeles, also San Diego.
People forget that when he was drafted, they were the San Diego Chargers. And, you know, he really, I watched Henry covering the Chargers.
I watched Henry really become a star at his position.
Some may make the argument that his star is still on the rise.
I'd be one of them.
I think he's still yet to reach his full potential,
even though he's been one of the Chargers' best weapons on offense
in the last couple of years.
196 career receptions, 2,322 yards, 21 touchdowns.
Patriots definitely shelled out a little bit to get him,
$37.5 million contract, $25 million in guarantees.
But this is a move that i've been
pining for all season long because the patriots have lacked that traditional wide roll tight end
that can accentuate his route running skills has a great ability to box out really really versatile
in this role dave from the time that you've watched hunter evolve in the chargers uniform
and you've been there for a little bit more of
his evolution as he's really come into his own the last couple of years where I haven't had my
sharp eye on the Chargers what type of player is Hunter Henry on the field and how much will
the Chargers miss his production on the field yeah I mean first of all what type of player is
Hunter Henry he's a complete tight end.
I think I have to start there with the description because you don't have to take this guy off the
football field for any type of replacement because he can do all aspects of the tight end position
very, very well. He's a very good blocker in the run game. He's tenacious. He is often used or has been or was used often,
you know, trying to pull and get out in front of guys because he is one of the more sure
blockers in the run game, as well as the pass game as well. He's going to provide some good
pass protection if he is asked to stay in and handle that role. He can do that more than
adequately. Hunter Henry is not the most explosive athlete, but he is very
crisp in his routes. He is very sure hands. He's going to catch the football if it's anywhere in
his radius. That's one thing in college, I don't believe he dropped a single pass during his
collegiate career. And that type of production, obviously not to that extreme degree, has carried
over into his career in the NFL. But Hunter Henry, he's a guy, like I said,
he's not going to get yards after the catch because he just doesn't have that
type of blazing speed.
You're probably going to see more of that out of Johnny Smith from this tandem,
but Hunter Henry does every aspect of the tight end position very, very well.
So that's something you're going to come to love and respect out of Hunter
Henry. Also, he's a great person.
You know, he's a Christian.
He's been married recently in the last couple of years.
He's a recent father as well.
He's just a good person.
He's an easy person to root for because he's a good player on the field
and he's a good person off the field.
He truly is, and that's something that struck me about Hunter
right from the time that he came in as a rookie right through the present day is the humility that he shows on the field each and every day.
And when either speaking to the media or speaking to his fans or just conducting himself, always the epitome of class.
And I do want to get into a little bit more about Hunter Henry, the man, in just a moment, because these segments here on Locked on Patriots this week
are about getting to know the new guys.
And this is one guy that I think will really endear himself to Patriots Nation.
But I wanted to talk a little bit more on the field
when it comes to his pairing with John O. Smith.
A lot of Patriots fans have visions dancing around in their heads
of Gronk Hernandez 2.0.
And I think that there's some truth to that, but these guys aren't going to fit into the cookie cutter molds of what Gronk
Hernandez did. There are two little bit skill set that does lend itself to one another, but
they're two different types of players, two different sets of tight ends. We mentioned
earlier, and you mentioned that Hunter is more of that traditional
wide type tight end. He's going to be someone that is not going to get a ton of yards after
the catch, but he is going to run routes precisionally. He's really a dynamic route
runner, one of my favorite aspects of his game. And that combined with a sizable offensive line
that the Patriots are employing in 2021 and a pretty capable running game, they can really be poised to succeed in those play-action schemes.
Josh McDaniels is going to have a lot of fun dialing those up, maybe even running Jonu Smith out of the backfield.
We saw them do that when they had Gronk and Hernandez, and I think Jonu can let himself into that very well. In terms of being able to pair with a dynamic tight end like
Jonu Smith, Hunter Henry has some experience in that area, pairing with Antonio Gates for a number
of years. I know Gates was on the downside of his career when these two played together, but
how much of a complementary teammate will Hunter Henry be to another dynamic tight end in Jonu
Smith? Well, he's another guy you have to account for.
I mean, yes, Antonio Gates was at the latter part of his career
at that point in time, but he was still dynamic enough to draw attention
and take some of that attention away from Hunter Henry.
So that's the thing.
It's going to be a double-edged sword with this situation.
If you try to concentrate on Johnny Smith and you forget about
Hunter Henry, that's going to be a big problem for you. Because like you said, he does have very,
very crisp and precise routes. He has very, very good hands. He's a weapon in the red zone. I think
that's something that the Chargers did not utilize enough to that effect. I really wish that he got
more opportunities. And also, it seemed like when
the Chargers offense was humming and going the right way, Hunter Henry was highly involved in
the game plan. He had five, six catches. Normally, when that happened, the Chargers won football
games. I mean, he's that type of guy. He's a catalyst type of player. And I think he can
continue to be that for the Patriots. But it's just the fact that you have to account for him. You cannot ignore Hunter Henry because, yes, he's not the most athletic, he's not the fastest guy, but he will get open. It's like Keenan Allen. Keenan Allen is not the fastest receiver in the NFL, but he is so technically sound that he will get open and Hunter Henry he will get open not by much but he's going to catch the ball so you have
to account for that that's why it's going to be so dynamic and that's why play action is going to be
so effective because you seriously cannot tell based off of alignment and personnel whether the
Patriots are going to run the football or they're going to throw the ball because Hunter Henry does
both of those things extremely well that's why why this aspect, this skill set, is going to allow the Patriots offense to be more multiple.
And when you're more multiple, you're more successful.
Absolutely.
12-man personnel for days coming up in New England, and I know fans are excited about it.
Look, they have their move tight end in Jonu Smith.
They have their prototypical in-line tight end in Hunter Henry.
Henry's ability to run routes, again, his ability to box out,
such a reliable pass catcher and a strong blocker,
complete total package at the tight end position,
and we here in New England are thrilled to have him.
And, Dave, I really appreciate you joining me today
to give some insight on what Hunter Henry lends on the field.
But I do want to pick your brain before I let you go today, my friend,
on Hunter Henry the man.
What type of person are we getting here in Foxborough
with the arrival of Hunter Henry?
We find out with Dave Droegemeier of Locked On Chargers

of the Locked On Chargers podcast. And Dave, in the previous segment, we talked a lot about what Hunter Henry does
for the Patriots on the field,
particularly two tight end sets, 12-man personnel,
giving the Patriots that dynamic two tight end tandem
that they've longed for for quite some time.
But you alluded to this earlier,
and I've had the chance to be able to see Hunter evolve
into quite the professional athlete.
You've had a much closer and sharper look at Hunter's evolution.
In terms of his relationship to the fan base in Los Angeles
and now hopefully in New England,
what type of person are the Patriots or their fans expecting to get
or should they expect to get in Hunter Henry's arrival in Foxborough?
Well, I think that kind of starts with Tom Telesco, the evaluator, and the type of people
and type of men that he wants to bring into his organization. It's always high character,
high class guys, people that do not get into trouble. They are just good, upstanding young
men. Hunter Henry is that in spades. He, like I said before, he's a Christian
man. He's a, he's very godly. His faith is very important to him. He's married. He does have a
kid. He's always been extremely respectful in any situation. Whenever he's in press conferences or
talking to fans, he is always a very, very humble individual. And that's one thing you mentioned
earlier as well, but I can't really accentuate that enough. He just is a good, good person. You're going to see that in press
conferences. You're going to see it on the field too. And you're going to hear it from his teammates.
His teammates love him. He was a captain with the Chargers because of that ability to lead.
And when he first came in, you know, when you're teamed up with a future Hall of Fame tight end and
Antonio Gates, it's kind of like, well, let me just sit back, watch, learn, and observe.
But now, as Antonio Gates crept a little bit into the background more and more and then
eventually retired, Hunter Henry stepped more and more into that leadership role.
And he leads by example.
The way he works, he's a ferocious worker.
He's just a good person.
You're never going to catch him in a situation to where you he's going to compromise himself or his character
he's like i said he just was raised correctly he has a good head on his shoulders he's very
intelligent he's very intelligent he is just a good quality person i think people are going to
see that they're going to appreciate that and they're going to love that in New England. Yeah. And I think they will as well.
And look, you talk about high quality, high character. That's something that I've always
admired about Hunter and Rob Gronkowski did, you know, definitely embody that while he was here in
New England for all of the frat boy image that Rob puts out on the field and he puts out in
public. This is a guy that really spent an awful lot of time getting to know his fans,
being kind and courteous to everyone he ever met, and also his involvement in the community.
And I know that's something Hunter believes in very strongly, and I know it'll endear him to
Patriots fans. Last but certainly not least here, Bud, before I let you go, Henry has been someone that Bill Belichick has been enamored with for quite some time.
We talked about this during our crossover back in December.
Especially if you watched the end of that Patriots game.
Got a nice little hug.
That postgame embrace probably was a little bit more foreshadowing.
I think I even tagged you in a tweet in that.
Yeah, I do remember that. Trying to kind of raise the ire a little bit more foreshadowing as much i think i even tagged you in a tweet in that yeah yeah i remember that trying to kind of raise the eye over a little bit who knew that it would actually be a future telling but uh there's no question about it uh belichick when he has his
eye on you from the time that you are in high school uh and he did uh obviously hunter playing
at pulaski academy in little rock arkansas Legendary high school coach there, Kevin Kelly, has a relationship with Bill Belichick.
And Bill was effusive in his praise for Hunter Henry, both on the field and off the field.
Hunter is actually coming in with a couple of young tight ends on this roster.
Devin Asiasi and also Dalton Keene.
Neither one really lived up to the hype that the Patriots had on them last year.
They were high draft capital, didn't quite really live into their role, but now they're going to be
able to learn from two of the best in the game. What kind of mentor can Hunter Henry be to these
two young tight ends on the Patriots roster? I think he can be an incredible mentor. I mean,
just the way he goes about his business and the way how he's so complete in his game.
He can really teach every aspect of the tight end position.
And yeah, you said they were high draft picks.
But honestly, those two tight ends in my evaluation last year, they were fifth or sixth round guys.
I thought the Patriots took them way, way earlier than most other people do.
But hey, we know the Patriots do what they want and how they want to do it.
So that's obviously no surprise there.
But he had a great mentor too.
I mean, the pass catching element,
the boxing out element that he learned from Antonio Gates.
I mean, nobody in the NFL,
honestly, nobody in NFL history did that better
than Antonio Gates did.
So there's no better mentor in that aspect
of catching a football at the tight end position. There's no better mentor in that aspect of catching a football
at the tight end position.
There's no better person to learn from.
Hunter Henry has that knowledge.
He also has that ability to teach blocking both against the run
and in the passing game.
I just think the way he is so technical, the fact that he's such a good technician
and the experience that he's got from his
journey in the NFL is only going to benefit these two young tight ends as long as they're
able to listen and learn and be there and work as much as Hunter Henry is going to,
because that's what's going to happen.
He's going to come in the building.
He's going to work his butt off every single day.
And, you know, he's going to pull that out of these young tight ends too i think it's only going to be a good experience for them
as long as they open their ears and they close their mouths and listen absolutely and i could
not have said it better from a man that knows his hunter henry knows his los angeles chargers and
above all knows his football we are ecstatic to have hunter henry up here in new england
