And while you're out there doing some podcast prodding through the Twitterverse, please be sure to follow the Locked On Patriots account as well at LO underscore Patriots. Pats fans, I know we're all still reeling from the audacity of the NFL to hold a Super Bowl without the New England Patriots, or at least Tom Brady, or even Jimmy Garoppolo.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Not a lot of Patriots connections to this game, but it was still a very good one on Sunday. The Los Angeles Rams are Super Bowl 56 champions with a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Bengals had this one right up until midway through the fourth quarter. Then Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford leading his team on an amazing drive culminating in a touchdown reception from Stafford to wide receiver Cooper Cupp. Cupp would end up winning the MVP. The Rams defense really putting the clamps on Joe Burrow and that Cincinnati offense in the second half. Primarily Aaron Donald who made some amazing tackles, really got after the quarterback and proved that he is truly one of the best defenders in this league. Rams did everything they needed to do. They come out on top.
Starting point is 00:03:21 So with the Rams now winning the Super Bowl and that confetti still falling probably somewhere in Los Angeles and SoFi Stadium, now all 32 NFL teams turn their attention to the 2022 season. And this is exactly where we pick up here on Locked On Patriots. And even though it was Super Bowl weekend, the New England Patriots still managed to find their way into the newsreel. And that's exactly what happened. Josh McDaniels, former offensive coordinator, now current head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, already took Patriots assistant quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegre.
Starting point is 00:03:54 He'll coach the Raiders quarterbacks alongside Josh McDaniels, but he's also going to have two former Patriots coaches with him as well. Carmen Brasillo, now former Patriots offensive line coach, and Mick Lombardi, now former Patriots wide receivers coach, will be in Las Vegas. A lateral move for Brasillo, he goes and coaches the Raiders O-line, and a promotion for Mick Lombardi, who goes to Las Vegas now, he will be the offensive coordinator under Josh McDaniels. It definitely is some coaching poaching going on in Foxborough, and it probably is not sitting well with Bill Belichick.
Starting point is 00:04:30 After all, Bill has been quoted on a number of different occasions saying that he doesn't believe that coaching staffs need to be fleeced on their way out of town. The Patriots definitely looking a little thin. They're missing McDaniels. They're going to miss Hardegree. Now they're missing Brasillo. Mick Lombardi is gone. Ivan Fiers is expected to retire. That's a lot of open positions that the New England Patriots have to fill on this roster. You might say it's a monster task. Well, folks, good news is when we have something that is a monster task, we need a
Starting point is 00:05:03 monster man to solve it. and that's exactly what it is our good friend the legendary thomas murphy joins me here on the pod today and murph and i will discuss his thoughts on super bowl 56 but of course it's locked on patriots so we're not going to stray far from the formula we will talk about the patriots coaching voids what it means for the development of mac jones and also how the Patriots might go about filling some of these open spots on their staff. Recapping Super Bowl 56 and previewing what the Patriots 2022 coaching staff may look like in the upcoming season when this episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast continues. Patriots fans, when you have monster problems that your team is facing, you need
Starting point is 00:05:48 monster opinions to solve them. And luckily for all of us here today, folks, my guest has those opinions. The green wisdom and counsel we all know and love is here today and will be provided as only this man can provide it. A columnist extraordinaire for E2GSports.com, my benefactor in this business, the only man, past, present, or future, with his very own branded hashtag, LockedOnMurfMondaysExist for this guy exclusively. That's right, folks.
Starting point is 00:06:19 The legendary Thomas Murphy is back for his weekly appearance here on LockedOnPatriots. Thank you for coming to me in friendship. Thank you for joining me today. Don Murph. Always my pleasure, man. Always my pleasure. Q Hotel California, man.
Starting point is 00:06:37 What a great game last night. I had fun. It was fun. It was great to actually watch a Super Bowl without a dog in the hunt. And with all due respect, I always love to give credit to the former Pats. Happy to see Sonny Michel get a ring, especially after his traded, you know, his trading before the, before training camp this year. But at the same time, you also look at things right now and you say, it really was, it was a good game to watch um not without controversy unfortunately
Starting point is 00:07:06 Murph I think a lot of people are looking at maybe some questionable calls toward the end of this but ultimately I truly believe the Los Angeles Rams deserve to win this game last night they just they executed when they needed to that 79 yard drive hitting Cooper Cup uh Matt Stafford proving that he is a big-time quarterback Aaronord proving that he is a big time quarterback. Aaron Donald proving that he is one of the more monster football players on the planet. Maybe the best defender in the game right now. They made the plays where they needed to Bengals credit them.
Starting point is 00:07:36 I thought they played tough. I thought they played strong, but you need more than just double digit offense down the stretch. And unfortunately they weren't able to able to muster it up. Murph, again, I think we both had fun watching this one last night. I think this was a fun game to watch, to cover. Your takeaways from the game, just your overall general impression of Super Bowl 56.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Like I said, it was a fun game. I don't want to hear anything about questionable calls at the end. You know, I was done with that once Chris Hogan got pushed out off of my widescreen TV back a few years ago and no flag was called. In real time, it looked like a hold. So, you know, please, folks, just stop with the hate all the time on the referees. It was a tough call and I would have rather had it go the way it did.
Starting point is 00:08:30 And you know, the Bengals still had a chance to stop them then go the other way. It was, it was a good game. The, the, the Rams overcame some Jalen Ramsey screw ups. I'm sorry. He's just so overrated. It's unbelievable. When Odell Beckham went down, they didn't hang their heads.
Starting point is 00:08:52 They came back up. And on that last drive, it's got to be one of the best final drives in Super Bowl history. It really does. It's got to rank up right to anything what the Patriots did against Atlanta that year or anything else. And Cooper Cup is just the best at what he does in the NFL. There's nobody better. Everybody knew where the ball was going on every drop back. And there it went. Even even my my wife walked through the room and was like, why aren't they why aren't they guarding Cooper Cup with more people? Because nobody else can catch the ball.
Starting point is 00:09:31 It's true. It really is. You look at what this kid was able to do last night and just the remarkable nature of the way this game unfolded. And you're right. I've used this quote several times here on Locked On Patriots. So for those of you that have heard it before, you're going to hear it again because it is appropriate. But it reminds me of something that Robert Parrish once said about Larry Bird. Everybody in the building knew who the ball was going to when the game was on the line. Larry was on the court. You knew the ball was going to him. It's one thing to know where it's going. It's another thing to be able to stop it. When you have that kind of prowess where everyone is zeroing in on you you know where it's going you know what's coming and you're still able to get the job done that really uh just i mean it really speaks to just how good you are at your craft and just how uh you know how much you mean to your uh to your team and uh an mvp performance last night for cooper cup um aaron donald a lot of people, Murph, are making the
Starting point is 00:10:26 argument that maybe Donald was deserving of the Super Bowl MVP. I think it was a real toss-up. I really and truly do. I think Cooper played a tremendous game. If the trophy went to Aaron, I would not have batted an eyelash. I wouldn't have said, oh, well, no, I don't think so. I really think it could have gone either way. Do you think, do you think the, the committee got it right by, by giving this one to a Cooper cup, or do you think maybe they missed an opportunity to go with co-MVPs here? No, I don't think they missed an opportunity. The reason that they hoisted the trophy is because of Cooper. I'm not trying to downgrade Aaron Donald at all here and what he was able to do,
Starting point is 00:11:07 the amount of space that he took up the entire game. He had three men on him. And finally, they started to get through with some other people. Aaron did have four solos, no, three solos on the game and two sacks. It was, especially what he did in, in the fourth quarter. It was, it was really amazing. They could have given it to him, but I think that,
Starting point is 00:11:31 I think the committee got it right. I mean, cup had eight receptions for 92 yards, two touchdowns. He had one carry for a fantastic first down that, that you know, the Rams really needed at that point in time, there was, you know, nowhere else to go and and they couldn't stop them. Cooper Cupp deserved this. And if you ask Cooper, he would probably say, I'd love to share it with Aaron, but I think they got it right.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Yeah, I do too. I do think they got it right. And look, I love Aaron Donald as a player, and I think obviously his prowess and everything that he showed in the closing moments of that Super Bowl is everything you want a defender to be relentless, powerful, but also get forward progress and leaning forward the way he tackled him and getting his arm where he needed to. That's something that is so instinctive in a player in that moment to come up big. That big for a player is truly amazing. So, you know, great stuff by the L.A. Rams last night.
Starting point is 00:12:43 They deserve to win. On the flip side there is once again heartache in cincinnati and i know a lot of bengals fans were looking at the clock and watching the clock tick away and saying we really got a shot at this uh yeah unfortunately our buddy mike is uh his uh his piece this morning for clns media was titled hollywood heartbreak and i think that's really appropriate for how uh c appropriate for how Cincinnati Bengals fans are feeling right now. Murph, ultimately, if you're the Bengals, what takeaways do you bring away from this game? What ultimately, in your opinion, doomed them last night?
Starting point is 00:13:16 And what can they build on to remain in the top tier of the AFC teams? Well, you have a young superstar in Joe Burrow. And I really believe that this kid has all the tools that you need. They went out, they've drafted well over the last, you know, three or four years and have the right coach that the first thing they do is, you know, re-up the coach that you have. After that, it's really, it's a matter of depth and being able to run the offenses that you need to do against certain competition. I just don't think they were able to do that last night for a full 60 minutes once the Rams figured out a couple of things and made Burrow hold the ball. His quarterback rating went down exponentially.
Starting point is 00:14:10 He did well when he was getting the ball out quick. They took that away from him, you know, through pressure and other and, you know, scheming up things in the defensive backfield and kept him from doing what he was able to do in the first half of the game and in the fourth quarter, at least. And, you know, what they need to do now is get a little deeper, get a little more, a little more aggressive on defense and be able to do some more things up front to stop these teams from being able to just, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:47 pick you apart when they need to. Yeah, absolutely. I see a lot of tweets going back and forth when it comes to the Bengals and what their shortcomings were. And I know a lot of people, the common one that I'm seeing is off. They had been a seal. They would have won this super bowl. Yeah. Not so fat. It doesn't exactly work that way. Obviously, Sewell would have definitely provided more protection,
Starting point is 00:15:08 and that's something the Bengals have to address in this offseason, getting this kid some protection. But without Jamar Chase, I don't think you're in this game at all. And I think that's exactly what fans kind of have to. We all have a tendency, Patriots fans, any type of fans, any NFL fans have a tendency to live in the moment and you're going to look at a play and you're going to look at a given moment and say oh see this guy would have done that that guy would have done that but you gotta take an all-encompassing
Starting point is 00:15:34 look and murph and i are going to do that in just a moment uh before we take our leave of the 2021 season and super bowl 56 uh super bowl 57 already the The odds are out there in Arizona. You know, before we know it, Murph, we're going to be breaking this one down. It's just the nature of our business. Obviously, the Chiefs right now, the odds on favorite at 7-1. The defending champs come in at 10-1. The Bills, 15-2 right now. Our New England Patriots, bud, in a sea of 25-1 odds, joining the Indianapolis Colts, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Isn't that interesting? The Bucs and the Pats have equal odds to win the Super Bowl next year.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Tennessee Titans also have Tennessee Titans, 25-1. Murph, it's going to be interesting, to say the least, heading into this season. I'm not putting you on the spotots ability to possibly contend for any type of supremacy in the AFC, maybe even contend for a Super Bowl title in 2022? I do. I think it's wide open. Most of the favorites that we just talked about that you just mentioned have been sliding backwards, sliding backwards. These are these are teams that are also losing free agents. These are teams that have lost people off their coaching staff. And they are not trending in the right way. I'm sorry, folks up there in Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:17:15 You can hang your Super Bowl wildcard banner wherever you want, but you didn't do as well as you did the year before. You lost Brian Dayball. I think the AFC is wide open and the Patriots, with a tweak here, with a tweak there, bringing in the right minds, they are going to be able to, once again, picking up higher in the draft, they're going to be able to contend this year with anybody that's out there. Yeah, good point. I'm glad that you brought that up. You know, the great Ric Flair once said,
Starting point is 00:17:49 you did it once. Now let's see you do it again. I think that's what's going to be the mantra for the Buffalo Bills right now. Do they have the talent on both sides of the ball? Absolutely. Do they need to retain some of that talent? Yes, they absolutely do. Will they miss Brian Dayball? Yeah, they're definitely going to miss him so these are going to be things to watch uh it's always interesting when i see these especially the day after a super bowl all the usual suspects are there murph we talked about the chiefs the bills the rams the bengals are at 11 to 1 the cowboys the niners the packers the ravens the cardinals hometown they're 22 to 1 the denver broncos 18 toinals, hometown, they're 22-1. The Denver Broncos, 18-1 right now.
Starting point is 00:18:26 Yeah. They're in that top tier. Yeah. You've got to wonder if Vegas maybe, they always know stuff. I don't know. Maybe they know something we don't know. Discount mile high double choke. Yeah, it might be.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Who knows? Yeah, who knows, man? Who knows? That could be the only reason that I can see Denver being at those odds to do it all. And also, you know, if they sign him, maybe it'll push it down because, you know, we all know what happens to that man in the playoffs. Yeah, it's true. I mean, you know, until again, until you do it once, let's see you do it again. We haven't seen that since he did it once. My good friend Pete Bukowski right now is listening to this going, oh, come on.
Starting point is 00:19:08 You know, but hey, I'm just I'm just saying it's it's there. So, yeah, things I think are going to be interesting, but we're still a long ways away from Super Bowl odds, folks, because in just a moment, Murph and I are going to bring this back to Locked On Patriots. And there is Patriots news making the headlines throughout Foxborough and the surrounding areas. Josh McDaniel's doing a little coaching poaching out there in the Nevada desert. How will it affect the New England Patriots? What are Murph's thoughts on some of the coaching losses on this step? Who might be next man up? Murph and I will discuss that when this hashtag locked on Murph Monday episode of the

RockAuto.com Patriots fans, the legendary Thomas Murphy joins me here today on the pod.
Starting point is 00:22:06 It is hashtag LockedOnMurphMonday. It is Valentine's Day. Murph was kind enough to bring me flowers. This is really, really a very touching moment here on LockedOnPatriots. Just kidding, folks. Just kidding. But in any case, Murph, the New England Patriots now turn their attention to 2022. And in a lot of ways, they've done that since their 47 to 17 loss to the Buffalo Bills, but now it really becomes official.
Starting point is 00:22:30 Now it's all about 2022 for every team, at least until the Rams have had their championship parade. Over the weekend, we found out that the New England Patriots coaching staff, which was already looking a little already looking on the offensive side of Josh McDaniels is now goi Raiders. He's the new hea degree, actually leaving an assistant quarterback an offensive assistant. H the quarterback's coach f
Starting point is 00:23:00 fears, longtime running b true legend. Dante Skarniecki and just some of these great coaches that the Patriots have had the great fortune of having in their system for a number of years. Looks like he's ready to call it a career. No one can blame him for that tremendous career for Ivan. He's earned the right to retire and enjoy the tremendous career he's had. But that's a loss on this staff. And now we know that two more coaches will be following Josh McDaniels to Las Vegas. Carmen Brasillo leaving the Patriots, a lateral move. Offensive line coach last year for the Pats. He now goes and coaches the offensive line for the Raiders.
Starting point is 00:23:42 And Nick Lombardi leaving the New England Patriots is a promotion. He will be promoted to offensive coordinator in Las Vegas. Murph, these are all significant losses for the Patriots. I know a lot of the fan base loves to lay the blame at the doorstep for a lot of the coaches, and they've been very quick to criticize the coaching staff you hear that all the time about the Patriots not having competent you know assistants and McDaniels is this and you know a lot of vitriol being thrown on the defensive side of the ball but to coach in this league whether you're an assistant whether you're a head coach
Starting point is 00:24:19 whether it's a tough job it's an unforgiving job a thankless job a lot of times. And say what you will about the Patriots staff. They always employ one of the top staffs in professional football, and they've got competent guys on both sides. This does deplete this staff a little bit. We've heard the term brain drain and all that. In your opinion, what is the biggest loss for the Patriots, other than McDaniels? What do you think is the biggest loss for the Patriots on this list? Was any of them surprising to you? And where do the Patriots go from here? I don't think it was surprising. From what I'm hearing around town, Mick Lombardi was never going to get the OC job. And, you know, so it made sense for him.
Starting point is 00:25:08 He wants to move up the ladder. He has ties with his dad and the Raiders. So that came, you know, as less of a shock. I was shocked that Brasilio left. I was really surprised at that. His contract was up. Bill did not re-up him as quickly as he probably should have. So, you know, a bird in the hand is, you know, that's the way you go.
Starting point is 00:25:37 And I can't blame Carmine for doing it. You don't have a contract. There's absolutely, with all the turmoil that's going on right now um i can i can definitely you know understand why he took the gig when it was offered to him absolutely without any question and look you know you can never fault a guy especially i look at micklembardy i don't think anybody can really fault him for wanting to take that job first of all it's it's an it's an offensive coordinator position that's not only a bump in pay that's a bump in status uh that's more responsibility um i had the opportunity to
Starting point is 00:26:10 get to know mick pretty well he was one of those coaches that i had the opportunity to sit in on quite a few of his press conferences uh had quite a few back and forths with him sharp kid sharp guy knows his stuff knows what he's capable of and knows what his players can do and he has that personality of an offensive coordinator that i think is going to endear him to a lot of the guys his stuff knows what he's capable of and knows what his players can do and he has that personality of an offensive coordinator that i think is going to endear him to a lot of the guys he's going to be working with in las vegas so i think that was a good hire for josh mcdaniels and there is camaraderie there there's continuity and that's going to help mcdaniels moving forward without any question priscilla yeah i was a little surprised at that as well but then i heard a
Starting point is 00:26:43 lot of the same things that you did that obviously he wasn't re-upped, and the Patriots were not really looking to, you know, maybe, I don't want to say they weren't looking to bring him back, I think they wanted to bring him back, but maybe they weren't as quick on the draw as they needed to be, and look, Carmen saw an opportunity, and he went with it, and you really can't blame him for that. A lot of names being thrown around Murph about potential replacements. Matt Patricia's name thrown out there yesterday morning by the great Sunday column. I wrote about this a little bit last night for sports illustrated in terms of
Starting point is 00:27:16 Patricia's, you know, availability and why he might be an intriguing option. And look, I know it's going to cause a little bit of nausea for a lot of Patriots fans when they hear Matt Patricia's name to begin with, especially on the offensive side of the ball. But there is a little bit of a history there. Does this concern you that the Patriots are thinking in this direction? Or is's not part of bill belichick's plan uh you know to to quote the the great movie hunt for red october russians don't take a dump without a plan son neither does bill belichick all right and that's a little graphic maybe but it's still he he always he
Starting point is 00:28:03 always has a plan for everything now Now, whether, whether this is, is all comes to fruition or not, I'm not sure. I still would like to see O'Brien come back and, and play a role in the offensive side of this ball. Troy Brown is somebody that can step in and do and take over wide receiver spots or, or maybe even run with the running backs. Joe Judge has experience, but, you know, there's other – Chad O'Shea is still out there.
Starting point is 00:28:32 He's with the Browns right now, but I would really like to see Chad get brought back in. Yeah, O'Shea I think is somebody that a lot of people have been talking about. His name comes up an awful lot. Another hot name that people were talking about all day yesterday is Jerry Szaplinski from Giants, from the Dolphins. I wrote about Jerry a little bit. There is, you know, a familiarity there under Joe Judge. He also has the familiarity under Brian Flores in Miami.
Starting point is 00:29:00 So this is a guy that knows the system very well, was very highly thought of by Jacoby Brissett and Jimmy Garoppolo, both when they played here in 2016. He was promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach, and he really worked with those guys more individually. It was really more the McDaniels-Grady show at that point, and Jerry was really working very closely with Jimmy and Jacoby, and they both said nothing but great things about him. So a name to keep an eye on there as well. Tyler Hughes, an offensive assistant right now
Starting point is 00:29:30 that has kind of paid his dues the last couple of years since coming over in 2020. He's worked his way into a lot of different areas of the offense. I'm not saying a coordinator or definitely a positions coach, but he may take on a more active role this year as well. Needless to say, bud, the Patriots offensive coaching staff is going to look a lot different. And as good as Bill Belichick is, and I know we've heard a lot of times that, oh, well, Belichick is going to still be the one calling the offense.
Starting point is 00:29:56 As great as he is, he can't wear every single coaching hat that's out there. He's going to need competent help around him. Does he still bring in some guy from the outside or are we rolling with what we got? I guess time will only tell my friend. That's another, another name that's been out. That's out there that, uh, that I think you talked about, uh, in one of your columns is Billy Yates. Yes. Yeah. Uh, as a matter of fact, my column on Saturday night, uh, just breaking down this news that these two players were now going to. Yeah, Yates, I think, is someone that has earned a great amount of respect on that offensive line. He's a former Patriot, so you know that he understands what it means to be out there on the field doing what it takes to win.
Starting point is 00:30:40 I would like to see him get a shot at being the the old line guy. And, you know, say what you will, Patricia spent time coaching on the offensive line. I mean, I'm not saying that he's going to take on that role, but, you know, in a consigliere type role, you know, that might not be too bad of a fit.
