Over the last two off seasons, the Pats have taken care of priority number one.
Support Drake May at all costs.
This is Lockdown Patriots.
You are Locked on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcasts Network, your team every day.
What's happening?
I am your host of Nick Cattels.
On today's episode, we have all the latest details on Elliot Wolf standing his ground
and how the A.J. Brown trade came together.
In the second segment, Kishon Booty goes on the record about his future for the first time this
off season. But first, an offensive overhaul.
Today's episode is brought to by Fandul.
The biggest stage in world soccer is here.
Let there be goals on Fandul. Visit fandul.com to get started now.
Throughout the Mac Jones era, I discussed so many times on radio, my independent podcast when I was
doing it everything, Pat's with Greg Bedard. And of course, I've touched on it here with
lockdown Patriots. But during the Mack Jones era, you felt like the quarterback was never fully
supported. The 2024 draft, as we know, you know, it fell flat. You tried to address some help
there for your future quarterback with Jalen Polk and Javon Baker and Caden Wallace and
Layton Robinson. But that failed. That experiment failed. The 2024 draft outside.
of Drake May seen as a waste.
You hope Caden Wallace does something, but you don't feel like that's going to happen.
So they tried.
They tried during that 2024 draft.
They tried landing Brandon Ayuk during that 2024 off season.
But from the 2024 season, the end of the 24 season to right now, this offense has
been spectacularly transformed.
and it was capped off by the addition of A.J. Brown last week.
Let's go back to 2024.
Let's go back to the end of that season.
The quarterback was the same guy.
Same guy.
Drake May at the end of 24.
Drake May right now.
But Drake May is so far above and beyond where he was at the end of his rookie season
as he gets prepared to return to the football field in 2026 with the same
offensive coordinator for the first time in four or five years.
So the second season in Josh McDaniel's offense should reap some benefits for Drake May.
He is a different quarterback now.
He is a better quarterback now than he was at the end of that rookie season.
Then you go to the offensive line, left tackle.
Now, I know some people aren't thrilled with Will Campbell.
I know there's some concern about Will Campbell after last postseason in the Super Bowl.
Will Campbell is a better football player than Vedarian Lowe.
And Will Campbell, I think, is going to end up being average to above average at left tackle,
week in, week out. So you went from Vedarian Lowe to Will Campbell.
Well, let's think back to pre-injury Will Campbell and bet on his growth.
That's an upgrade. Do you remember who the left guard was in the 2024 season?
Think back. Think back. Do you remember who was your starting left guard? It was Michael Jordan.
You've gone from Michael Jordan to Elijah Vera Tucker. And of course, the biggest question with
Elijah Vera Tucker is his health, but if he is healthy, that's not even close.
And I would argue that Ben Brown and Jared Wilson are both better than Michael Jordan
if you had to move one of those guys to left guard if Elijah Verit Tucker gets injured.
So you've upgraded left tackle, you've upgraded left guard.
From center, you've gone from Ben Brown to Jared Wilson.
And I think Jared Wilson's ceiling, I think his athleticism gives me a lot of confidence
that he's going to be a good center.
So you've improved, left tackle, left guard.
I think eventually during this season,
you will see that Jared Wilson is an improvement over Ben Brown.
Right guard, Michael Wenu, Michael Wenu.
But here's the thing.
Michael Wenu is coming off the best football of his career
over the final two months or so of the 2025 season.
And he's walking into a contract year,
which you absolutely hope will motivate him,
put together another fantastic stretch of football.
So Michael Wenu coming off his best football walking into a contract year,
I feel like is an upgrade over the Michael Wenu that you got in 2024.
Right tackle, give me a break.
Demontre Jacobs versus Morgan Moses.
That's not even close.
Do you remember who the sixth offensive lineman was in 2024?
I would not have remembered this.
Zachary Thomas.
I don't remember Zachary Thomas.
I honestly don't remember the human being
Zachary Thomas playing football for the Patriots.
He played eight games.
So Zachary Thomas versus Caleb Lomu as your sixth offensive lineman.
I think it's clear.
The natural upgrade at quarterback,
given the growth development of Drake May,
and the offensive line from left tackle to right tackle,
I think you are better in every single spot.
And then you get to the skill positions.
Kendrick Bourne was seen as your hopeful number one receiver back in 2024.
You had Kendrick Bourne and you had Kashan Booty.
And you were hoping that maybe Kashan Booty would grow and develop.
But that's who you had.
You had Kendrick Bourne and Kashan Booty as your top two receivers going into camp.
Of course, you end up with Pop Douglas, but you get the idea.
Walking into, you know, 2024, you're saying Kendrick Born,
Kashon Booty going to be your top two receivers.
And really, that's what they were.
Comparing that, comparing Kendrick Bourne and Kay Shan Booty to A.J. Brown in Romeo Dobbs,
to me is borderline laughable.
It's not even close.
Kisham Booty, as we know, we'll talk about him in the next segment.
He might not be here in September because the Patriots wide receiver room is too deep and too good.
He was your number two guy in 2024.
Kendrick Bourne probably would not make this football team if he was on the current roster.
That is the difference that you have at wide receiver now.
I mean, it is just absolutely crazy, crazy.
How much that wide receiver room has grown talent-wise over the past couple of years
and obviously over the past couple of months.
But you can go back to 2025 and say Stefan Diggs was certainly an upgrade over anybody
that you had in 2024.
So the O line better, the wide receiver room better.
Now, we'll see about tight end because Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper versus Hunter Henry and Eli
Rairden, since Julian Hill is now out for the season, we'll see.
I don't want to put a lot on Eli Rairden.
My favorite pick of the draft, I truly believe he's got tons of potential.
I truly believe he's going to be really good in the Josh McDaniel's offense.
But I also understand that at that position, it usually takes a couple of years before guys truly develop and understand the game at that level.
level. So I don't want to throw Eli Raiden into the deep end of the pool. So we'll see about
tight end. Hunter Henry obviously older now than he was in 2024 because, you know, that's how the
calendar works. Running back, Ramandre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson against Ramandre Stevenson and
Trayvion Henderson. This is a big, big season for Trayvion Henderson. And we're going to dive into
this a little bit more at some point down the road before the season begins. But Trayvion
Henderson is staring at a gigantic camp.
Can he take that next step?
If Trayvion Henderson can take that next step, then the backfield with this football team
easily surpasses the 2024 backfield.
And I think you could argue that Ramandre Stevenson, much like Michael Wenu,
the last couple months of the season last year, he was playing some of his best football
that we've ever seen him play.
But right now, I want to see what Trayvion Henderson does.
Pass protection, catching the football.
He has all the talent in the world.
And I think he should be absolutely a bona fide number two guy behind Ramandre.
But will he take that step forward?
Right now, I'm going to say I'm optimistic that this backfield will end up being better
than the backfield in 2024.
And then you look at the guy who's calling the plays and give me a break.
I mean, you've got Josh McDaniels against Alex Van Pelt, L.O.L.
I think every single one of us would take Josh McPhil.
Daniels in a heartbeat over Alex Van Pelt with all due respect to AVP.
So you start to look at this offense and how the Patriots, priority number one, I've said
this since they drafted Drake May.
You have to support your franchise quarterback.
You've got to give him talent to work with.
You've got to give him guys to throw the football to.
You've got to give him an offensive line that he can trust that can protect him.
And if you go back, that final week of 2024 and you compare that offense,
around the quarterback to this offense as we get ready for this camp.
I mean, it's just, it's not even, not even close.
And this is exactly how you support your young franchise quarterback.
On paper, mission accomplished without a shadow of a doubt.
Coming up, Kishan Booty publicly speaks about all the trade rumors and what he wants to happen.

Booty actually goes on the record about what he desires.

Kishan Booty, we've been hearing and reading Kishan Booty being on the trade market.
We've heard an awful lot about that since going back to before the NFL draft.
We heard it before the draft.
We heard it during the draft.
Of course, Kayshan Bouti was not at OTAs, which should not have surprised anybody.
I certainly wasn't surprised when somebody is on the trade block reportedly.
It's usually the case during these voluntary times that those guys are not going to show up.
But Kisham Bouti, he was in town over the weekend, and he spoke to Aaron Parsegian of WBZ.
And here's what he said, quote, I try not to buy into it regarding the trade talks.
At the end of the day, I can control what I can control.
As long as I'm doing what I'm supposed to do off the field, everything else will play out.
Kishan Bouti also told Parcigian that he plans on being at mandatory minicamp.
Now, as far as not buying into it, he knows what's going on.
He knows what's going on.
I don't think it's a surprise to Kishan Bouti that he could be traded this camp.
I don't think that's a surprise whatsoever.
that's why you pay your agents.
I am absolutely positive that Kishan Bouti's agents have spoken to him about what's going on,
what's happening.
And I would say the likelihood that he eventually gets dealt.
This is a reason why Kishan Bouti has not been at the facility.
There's really no other reason why.
If he was confident that he was going to have a future with this football team,
he would be at OTAs.
He would be at the voluntary offseason program.
and doing the conditioning.
But he has not been at Gillette.
And he's not at Gillette because he knows his future is unlikely going to be in New England.
So he knows what's going on.
But this is how you handle it.
If you're Kashan booty, this is absolutely how you handle it.
What you want to say if your booty is, you know, that's noise.
I'm not worried about the noise.
I'm going to be at mandatory minicamp.
My plan is to still be with the Patriots, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
because what Kayshan Booty wants to do right now,
if he wants to be dealt to a team that will give him opportunity
and he doesn't want to get New England angered,
he doesn't want to get Mike Vrable on his bleep list,
then you put out the fires.
You try to put out the fires before they get to rage
when you show up to mandatory minicam.
So you go out there and you say what Kayshan Booty said.
You say you're not, you know, paying attention to the talk,
that you're not buying into all the talk.
You say you're going to be at mandatory minicamp.
You in essence are playing ball.
You're playing ball so you don't look like somebody who's going to cause drama.
Because if you want to be sent to another team or you know you're going to likely be sent to another team,
you want to start off on the right foot with that new team.
And so this is the professional way to handle it.
Regarding Kayshan Bouti saying he's going to be at minicamp, yeah, of course he's going to be at
minicamp.
It's mandatory.
It's mandatory minicamp.
You get in trouble if you don't show up.
You get fined if you don't show up.
So I would be surprised if Kishan Bouty wasn't there on Tuesday.
I'd be shocked.
I'd be shocked if Christian Gonzalez isn't at mandatory minicamp.
But the million dollar question is, how involved is Kishan Bouti?
Is he actually practicing?
Is he out there on the field?
If he's out there on the field, is he getting reps with Baron Morton and, you know, the third string guys?
I would find it very hard to believe that Kishan Bouty is going to be taking snaps of consequence over the top three or four receivers on the roster right now.
So yeah, he'll be at mandatory minicamp because he has to be at mandatory minicamp.
but I'm more interested to see how involved he is.
How much does he practice?
But Kishan wasn't done.
Speaking to Dan Roach,
Kishan Bhudi said, quote,
I want to be in New England for the rest of my career.
I've enjoyed it out here.
Been here three years.
Every day I'm here, I call this home.
This is my new home.
Grew up in Louisiana,
stayed there 20 years,
but now Boston is my life.
And I don't doubt
I don't doubt the idea that, you know, Kayshaun Bouti would like to stay in New England.
Maybe he would love to stay in New England.
I mean, he's been on record saying that New England helped save his football career,
that he was on the verge of quitting football during that rookie season.
And the way Bill Belichick and the rest of the coaching staff handled him and worked with him,
made him want to stay in football.
he's obviously grown an awful lot and he's written about the gambling addiction and
how he's grown up in Boston, how he's grown up in New England.
So I don't really doubt Kishan Booty wanting to stay in New England, but I'm also sure
that Kishan Booty wants opportunity.
I'm sure that Kishan Booty wants to be a contributor.
I'm sure he wants to be a top three receiver on any roster that.
he's on. He has aspirations. He is ambitious. And I'm sure he's looking at this and saying,
yeah, I would love to be in New England, but I would also love to catch the football.
I mean, you go back to Kay Shan's rookie year, you go to the second year. He has discussed through
the media wanting the football, right? So that's what receivers want. They want the ball.
That's their job. So, yeah, I'm sure Kay Shan Bouty, uh,
would love to stay in New England or like to stay in New England, would like to be with
the team that drafted him that, you know, he trusts and he knows the quarterback really well.
I'm sure he's got plenty of friends on the team.
But when it comes down to it, two things are in the way, the opportunity, but also the money.
Booty's walking into a contract year.
And so what's best for Kishan Booty, what's best for Kishon Booty's family is for Kayshan Booty
to get as much opportunity as possible during the 2026 season.
Because the more targets, the more catches, the more money he's going to make on that next deal.
And I just don't see it happening in New England.
I don't.
I like Kay Shan Bouty as a football player.
I think he's more of a three-slash-four guy on a team.
But I just don't see it.
I've said this from the beginning.
A.J. Brown, you bring him in.
A.J. Brown is going to replace the vast majority of what K. Shan Bouti was doing for you.
Booty was playing that boundary X receiver position. That's going to be A.J. Brown.
And even though I think A.J. Brown is going to play more from the slot this year with
Josh McDaniels than he did last year in Philadelphia. I still think you're going to have
AJ Brown out there playing on the boundary 75% of the time, 80% of the time.
So I just don't see it with the addition of A.J.
J. Brown, the addition of Romeo Dobbs, Mac Holland's still in town. You want Kyle Williams to take that
step forward. I just don't see the opportunity. Now for the Patriots, yeah, that's great. You know,
oh, let's bring everybody back. Let's just have, you know, four or five receivers. Let's bring Stefan
Diggs back. Let's bring Kishon Booty back. Let's have the wide receiver room with like five or six
dudes in it. It sounds great. But it also sounds like fantasy football. These guys want a chance to play.
They want a chance to make money.
By the way, Ben Standig in D.C.
reported on Monday that the Washington commanders have yet to express any interest in Kayshan Bouti.
You wonder if they're just waiting on Brennan Ayuk.
Brennan Ayuk, Stefan Diggs are a couple of the names that could find themselves going to other teams, right?
So this might be a weighted out type of period.
But I still think Kishan Bouti is getting traded.
A.J. Brown is officially a Patriot, but how did it all come together? We have those details coming up next. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.

A.J. Brown was officially dealt to the paths one week ago after months of speculation.
But now we have the story behind the scenes of how it all came together thanks to Bert Breer of
Sports Illustrated. Thanks for checking out the lockdown podcast network. Now the number one sports
podcast network, your team every day. So the AJ Brown trade officially done. And of course,
when the deal gets done, sources start to speak. And we start to find out how this thing
came together. How was this deal finalized? What are the details? We have them. Let's start here.
Elliot Wolf has been apparently calling Philadelphia and asking Philadelphia about A.J. Brown since 2024.
So it sounds like Elliot Wolf before Mike Vrable came to town was making phone calls
and seeing if the Patriots could acquire A.J. Brown from Philadelphia, including a call at the deadline of last football season.
Now imagine that. Imagine if you were able to bring in A.J. Brown at the deadline and you rolled out A.J. Brown and Stefan Diggs in the playoffs last year, how much would that have changed things? I don't know. But I think you would have had a much better chance of winning that Super Bowl if you had A.J. Brown to go along with Stefan Diggs. I think your offense would have played better. I think your offense, your quarterback would have been better. Now, of course, wouldn't have saved the offensive line, but I digress. So the Patriots,
They've been making calls on A.J. Brown for a couple of years.
Howie Roseman's initial asking price was high.
Here's what Bert Breer wrote.
The first real conversation this year happened around the combine,
and Elliot Wolf could sense a different tone from Howie Roseman.
The Eagles were willing to do it,
but preferred to go post June 1st,
and they wanted a first rounder and another high-end pick.
Philly's model had been the Quinn and Williams return,
the Jets got from Dallas. Now, let me remind you what the Jets got for Quinn and Williams from the Cowboys.
They got Mazi Smith, a young defensive lineman. They got a 2026 second round pick and a
27 first round pick. Now, I don't know if the Eagles wanted a young player. Maybe that's where
the first Cajon Booty stuff came out before the Eagles started to add at that position.
but let's say, Kishon Booty, if he was involved, a 2026 second round pick and a 2027 first.
And if Booty was not involved, then a 2026 second and 2027 first.
And Elliot Wolf was not budging.
According to Bert Breer, Elliot Wolf told Howie Roseman, if you get a first round pick and second round pick, do it.
If you can get a one and a two from somebody else, do it.
Congratulations.
But the Patriots, they held the line.
They were not going to give up a first and a second round pick,
let alone a first, second, and a young player.
Also from Bert Breer's story,
Elliot Wolf was never, never willing to give up a first round pick in 2027.
Elliott Wolf and the Patriots, they put a lot of value on that 2027 first.
And it's because of what we've discussed in past podcasts.
A lot of people across the game believe that,
that the 2027 draft is going to be absolutely freaking loaded.
And so Elliot Wolf, that was a non-starter.
He was never willing to give up a first-round pick.
Now, what happened, according to Burr Breer, was that the Rams got involved,
and the Rams were willing to give up a 2028 first round pick,
not the 2027, but they were willing to give up a 2028 first round pick for A.J. Brown.
And that's where the 2028 pick got involved, right?
that's how it started to be talked about.
It was first the Rams and the Eagles talking about a deal regarding the first rounder in
28, not 2027.
What happened, according to Burr-Brier, was that the Rams conversation fell apart with
the Eagles because the Rams could not get a deal done for Devante Adams.
They wanted to trade Devante Adams somewhere and bring A.J. Brown in, which by the way,
also tells us the Rams thought highly of A.J. Brown. And they thought that A.J. Brown would be an
upgrade over Devante Adams, which I don't think has been discussed an awful lot because we kind of
just flew right by that Rams conversation. But Les Needs, Sean McVeigh, they felt. They felt like
AJ Brown was an upgrade over Devante Adams. You're not making that deal unless you thought that.
but they couldn't get a deal done for Adams, so the talks, they just died.
They ended up falling apart.
So then the talks picked back up between the Patriots and the Eagles.
Back to Bert Breer.
Roseman and Wolf did not meet face-to-face at the owner's meetings in Arizona,
but right around then they picked talks back up.
They started to discuss making a 2028 first rounder,
the focus of a deal, just as the Eagles had with the Rams.
The Eagles gave their trainers permission to talk to Patriots trainers about Brown's injury history,
and that happened right around April 1st.
As a matter of fact, Eagles trainers, according to Bert Breer, passed along A.J. Brown's scans,
his imaging.
They passed those along to the Patriots trainer.
So the Patriots had A.J. Brown's scans, and at least some, if not most of his medical information,
like three weeks before the NFL draft.
So that's how far along talks had got.
So the Patriots, they jump in.
When the Rams fall out, they jump back into this thing.
And they say, okay, yeah, we're willing to give up a 20, 28 first round pick.
The Eagles know that.
So the Eagles, in turn, say, okay, we'll get our trainers to talk to your trainers.
We'll send you scans, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
Now, by the draft, by the time you get to the draft,
Burt Breer reports that both sides were confident a deal was getting done,
but there were still some details to sort out.
Breyer writes, the Eagles told the Patriots they wanted a 2027 pick as well.
By mid to late May, the deal was essentially hammered out,
whereas the Eagles wanted the second pick involved to be on the higher end
with the Patriots initially offering a 2027 7th rounder to go with the 2028 first rounder.
There was a logical landing spot in the middle that everyone knew was workable.
So they resolved to finish talks on June 1st.
So that's the timeline.
Patriots, Eagles, they start talking early in the offseason, February at the Combine,
Howie Roseman wants a one and a two.
Elia Wolf says we're not going to give you a one and a two.
If you can get a one and a two, congratulations.
We're going to move forward.
We're going to do something else here.
Eagles, Rams, they start having conversations.
The 2028 first round pick gets involved with those talks.
Rams fall out because they can't deal Devante Adams and upgrade to AJ Brown.
So the Rams fall out.
At that point, Patriots, Eagles, they start having a conversation again at some point in March.
By April 1st, the Eagles know that the Patriots are willing to give up the 2028 first round pick.
They feel pretty good about a deal eventually happening.
By draft weekend, it's pretty much known that they're right there.
And then, you know, before you get to June 1st, Howie Roseman is still asking for another pick to go along with the 2028 first.
He wants that pick to be from the 27 draft.
Elliot Wolf offers him a seventh.
Roseman wants something better.
Elliot Wolf knowing that he has two fifth round picks,
says we'll give you a fifth.
We will give you the best of the two fifth round picks that we have,
and you have yourself a deal.
Now, the Patriots could have held out longer,
but I think that's a situation where you bite your nose to spite your face.
Give up the fifth rounder, get A.J. Brown to New England, ASAP.
Get him in the playbook, getting more,
get him working with Drake May.
That is much more important to me than a fifth round pick in next year's draft,
especially when you already have a fifth.
That wraps up this edition of Lockdown Patriots.
