Starting point is 00:00:00 The Jets are still the Jets and the Patriots still own them. This is the Locked On Sports Boston Patriots Postcast. You are Locked On Patriots Postcast, part of Locked On Sports Boston on the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to this Patriots Postcast brought to you by Game Time and part of the Locked On Podcast Network, where it is your team every day. I'm your host, Cam Stewart of the Locked On Podcast Network. And wow, the Patriots come away with one.
Starting point is 00:00:45 They end their six-game losing streak. They beat the Jets 25-22, and there are a lot of things changing in this world. Every day is a new day, but you can hit your head on the pillow tonight resting assured that the Jets are still the Jets. As bad as it's been for the Patriots, it's as bad as it's looked in 30 years. The Jets are still the Jets, and the Patriots still, still can get to them.
Starting point is 00:01:10 They have a top five quarterback of all time on the other end. The Patriots had to go back to Jacoby Brissett. The Jets are still the Jets, and they don't beat us. Well, except for that one time this year and one at the end of last year. We'll count those. Patriots move to 2-6. Jets fall to 2-6. Same record.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Identical head-to-head, 1-1. After all the hype the Jets got this year with Rodgers and now Devontae Adams and having the last two, you know, or having the offensive and defensive rookies of the year and all that, this was supposed to be the year the Jets were going to go to the AFC championship game. They were going to run away with this division. Same record as the Patriots. Same record as the worst Patriots team in 30 plus years.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Those Jets. And these Patriots, who, I mean, I gave them no shot. I gave them no shot when Drake May goes out of this game. In fact, I really didn't even give him a shot when it was fourth and goal from the one. We had seen the third and one play earlier with Jacoby Brissett in the game. It got absolutely blown up on a quarterback sneak. I was thinking, maybe Brissett can hop up over the top and get there. They hand it off.
Starting point is 00:02:23 And it's a Romondre Stevenson touchdown. And by the way, good, good game for Ramondre. I thought, um, you look at the rushing numbers and it's not that great and you're not going to be blown away by the stats that Ramondre Stevenson put up in this game. But when you needed him, he was there. He ends up with two touchdowns and the two point conversion catch, by the way. But I really just look at those two drives that that touchdown he gets in the third quarter where he is. He is big on that drive as a couple of first down runs, has the catch on the sideline, toe tapping catch, and then runs it into the end zone for the touchdown. He kind of put the team
Starting point is 00:03:04 on his back on that drive and then scores the one yarder end zone for the touchdown. He kind of put the team on his back on that drive and then scores the one-yarder for the game-winning touchdown. I just thought in terms of importance plays today, Ramondre Stevenson gave you what he was supposed to give you. Of course, in the stat book, it's 20 carries for 48 yards, two and a half yards to carry in a long of seven. But when you needed him, he was there. But, I mean, you can't look any further than giving some credit to Jacoby Brissett.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Again, I thought this game was done. I was ready to just stop watching all football for the rest of the weekend. Once Jacoby went in the game, I thought the Patriots had no chance and he comes in there and was quite respectable, quite respectable in this game. In fact, he was as good in relief of Drake May today as he was any other game this season that he started. 15 to 24 for 132. That's what Jacoby Brissett was giving you for six weeks. And here he gives it to you in relief and leads a game winning drive. An awesome scoring drive to go up with no time left on the clock. Now, I was a little concerned, obviously, with Aaron Rodgers getting the ball back with any kind of time as bad as as he was in this game or as, you know, not great as he's been this season. He is still that guy who does the Hail Marys all the time. Um, you know, but the Patriots, they get the ball with what, just under three minutes left.
Starting point is 00:04:31 I want to say, and they drive it 70 yards down the field with two 53 on the clock. And I think only one of their timeouts 70 yards down the field with this quarterback and no receivers, and they went up and won the game. That's got to be like bottom falling out for the Jets. You know, like that's got to be as bad as it gets for the Jets to lose to this team when they desperately needed a win. But Jacoby Brissett leads him down the field. It didn't start well in that last drive. It was an incompletion on the first play.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Kendrick Bourne with another drop. Hunter Henry has great hands. He's the only pass catcher it feels like they have. And they're converting third and longs. You know, they convert a third and 10, a third and nine on that drive. They were doing it a couple of drives in the second half where they were completing like third and eight,
Starting point is 00:05:23 third and nine in the pass game. I was like, where is that coming from? And talk about where is this coming from? Third and 10 from the jets 43 with a minute and a half left Jacoby Brissett to Keishon Butte for 34 yards first and goal. Who had that one? Who had a Jacoby Brissett to Keishon Boutte on Sauce Gardner to set up a game-winning touchdown who had that one and then by the way you know a couple plays later Boutte makes the catch again and he's down just short of the goal line you're like oh my god is this seriously is this going to be it like is this how they're going to lose this game they're going to get stacked up on a fourth and goal from the one after Keyshawn Boutte was tackled from behind just before breaking the plane.
Starting point is 00:06:12 But it didn't happen. I was surprised they handed it off instead of just a QB over the top. But Ramondre Stevenson gets it in for the touchdown. And the Patriots are dancing on the sideline at 2-6. All right. Don't let these guys get hot or something. I'll tell you, I really felt like I don't want to say like the worst because, I mean, it was a six game losing streak we were talking about,
Starting point is 00:06:38 but it was going to be so poetically Patriots. If the Jets had hung on to win that game. Poetically 2024 Patriots because of kind of where they lost it, I thought. So obviously, Zerline had missed the field goal. The Patriots had come back to go up 17-16. Jets went down and scored right away, and I put in my notes, game over. But then delay of game on the two-point conversion backs them up. They don't get it. 22-17, big drops in there. But the one I'm looking at before when the Patriots went up 17-16 was when they had it at what? The two, three-yard line? Jacoby Brissett fumbles a snap that was a read option or not even a snap it was him bringing it back to his body he fumbled it on a read option that
Starting point is 00:07:31 he would have scored on it would have been the go-ahead touchdown and then on third and goal they they throw it to the corner and it's broken up by Jalen Mills of all people Jalen Mills who couldn't get out of his own way. Most of his time with the Patriots is going to break up this play four point play that the jets win. And I was like, if this is what's going to cost the Patriots a win today, that would just be perfectly 2024 Patriots. It didn't, the jets are still the jets and the Patriots come away with it. Oh man, there were plenty of opportunities I thought for both teams to take advantage. It was not maybe the best advertisement in terms of the whole game for the NFL, but you look at the last couple of minutes
Starting point is 00:08:17 and it was great. It was absolutely great. Let's go over where the Jets messed up plenty in this game because I know that's going to be a huge talking point and it's a lot of fun and how the let's go over where the jets messed up plenty in this game, because I know that's going to be a huge talking point and it's a lot of fun and how the Patriots were able to, you know, pounce on that throughout this game and get the tight victory. That's coming up on the locked on sports, Boston Patriots postcast coming up after this.
Starting point is 00:08:42 First, I got to tell you about our friends at LinkedIn. This is where Woody Johnson's got to go, guys. He's got to go to LinkedIn Talent Solutions, okay? Because it's not like any other job board. They help you hire professionals that you can't find anywhere else. Even those who aren't actively searching for a head coaching job in the NFL, but might be open for the perfect role.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Because in any given month, over 70% of LinkedIn users do not visit other job sites, job board sites. Hear that, Woody? If you're not going to LinkedIn, you're not doing it right. 86% of small businesses get a qualified candidate within 24 hours. Hire professionals like a professional. LinkedIn knows that small businesses are wearing so many hats and they might not have the time or resources to hire, but two and a half million small businesses use LinkedIn for hiring.

Starting point is 00:10:24 run your game. Patriots win Patriots win. I thought there might've been a second Gatorade bath of the season. I'm glad there wasn't. But the Patriots do get the 25, 22 win over the jets. And of course what you're going to be hearing, not so much on the lockdown Patriots postcast, which we're bringing to you hearing, not so much on the Locked On Patriots postcast,
Starting point is 00:10:45 which we're bringing to you right now, but throughout the week is, did the Patriots win this game? Did the Jets lose this game? And to which I would say, both teams had plenty of opportunities to lose this game. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to win it, but boy, the Jets are in a bad way.
Starting point is 00:11:00 I was thinking for so much of this game that with as poorly as the Jets were playing, that they would lose to 30 teams in this league, but not this one. That's what I was thinking. I was like, any other team on the slate, maybe even Carolina, they could beat them or they would lose to them with how poorly they were playing today, but they might just beat the Patriots. They don't. It came back to bite them.
Starting point is 00:11:25 I've never seen an NFL team use all three of their timeouts in the first quarter, use up their first half allotment of timeouts in the first 14 minutes of that game. That was incredible. Two of them were to save delay of game penalties. That's a 40-year-old Hall of Fame quarterback on the other end, and he has no feel for the play clock by the way they almost had a couple more and they had one on a two-point conversion biggest play of the game to that point you just took the lead you're gonna you're gonna kind of
Starting point is 00:11:54 put him away not necessarily put him away but force him to have to score a touchdown just to get to overtime and you have a delay of game penalty on it, and then you don't get it, and that allows the Patriots to go down the field and score the game-winning touchdown. That's on the quarterback. What a mess. What an S-show going on up there in New Jersey. I mean, wow, and the penalties, my God. I mean, we knew it coming in. They're one of the most undisciplined teams in the entire league, but they just, they couldn't help themselves. It was penalty after penalty, and it was like stupid stuff. It was off sides.
Starting point is 00:12:32 They did have one roughing the passer that allowed the Patriots to move up in one of those final two drives. That was a dumb penalty. But overall, it's like they just couldn't get out of their own way for a ton of this game. And usually that would be the Patriots, but eight penalties for 55 yards for the Jets. And I think they only had one in the fourth quarter, just five of 50 for the Patriots. But you look down the stat sheet and it's not all that. There's not a lot to separate these teams.
Starting point is 00:13:04 They ran about the same amount of plays. The Jets did have 100 more yards of total offense. The Patriots with just 247 yards of offense, and they won this thing. Yards per play was in favor of the Jets, but I thought the Patriots' coverage overall was pretty good, which it's been not good the last couple of weeks. They did better against the run than they have the last couple of weeks. They did better against the run than they have the last couple of weeks. You remember that was, um, that was what 600 yards of, of rushing allowed in the last three games. Um, that, that was brutal. Instead they were dead even today, jets, 112
Starting point is 00:13:37 yards, Patriots, 111. That's how you stoop down to their level or how the jet stoop down to the Patriots level, I guess, was that the Patriots finally stopped the run against a running back I like in Brees Hall. But a lot of these numbers are even. Where I will split hairs with or where I will kind of be Debbie Downers about the Patriots is if Drake May is out for any period of time here, that's not good for the Patriots. Obviously, with concussions, it's weird.
Starting point is 00:14:09 You don't know. It's kind of a week-to-week thing, right? It could have been a case where he was just fuzzy so that he couldn't come back in this game, or it could be a bad one that's going to keep him out a couple weeks. But I don't think even with the kind of light schedule the Patriots have coming up that you can afford to, to have him out for any period of time. Um, and the other thing that, that rears its ugly head is not the offensive
Starting point is 00:14:37 line, but the weapons you have on this team or lack thereof, because once again, you have just nothing, nothing, nothing at receiver. And I don't know what the official count was. I watched every snap in this game. I had five drops on the Patriots receivers. Kendrick Bourne and Jalen Polk could be switching out jerseys and uniforms each week. And we'd have no idea. They give you the same amount. They give you nothing. They get their hands on every pass and they never reel it in. They're both just zeros, absolute net zeros across the board. In fact, net negatives when you're dropping the ball, but they give you absolutely nothing offensively.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Tyquan Thornton had a play in the first half from Drake May, first quarter. That was a beautiful, beautiful throw by May. He's running out of the pocket. It's like 40 yards downfield. Tyquan does the hard part. He gets position on his guy, backs him out, and you could not have handed the ball off any better to Tyquan Thornton, and he still drops it. Somehow, some way, he will find a way to drop it. Patriots traded up for that guy, by the way. If the receiving core had the hands of Hunter Henry, the Patriots might have three or four wins by now.
Starting point is 00:15:49 And I'm stunned that Henry gets open on this final drive. It's like, how does the Jets defense allow that to happen? You know, but just the horrific, horrific drops today. And I think the offensive line has been playing better the last few weeks, but the weapons are what the weapons are. And that's the thing. It's not getting any better. But overall, I thought in coverage, you were, you were as good as you can be. Probably Garrett Wilson has five receptions for 113 yards, but it's like, I mean, what else, what do you expect when Marcus Jones is on him? You know what I mean? Like, what do you expect?
Starting point is 00:16:26 Gonzalez had a good game. He had a great four-point play in that second half, in that beginning of the fourth quarter, I believe. Maybe it was the third quarter when the Jets took the 16-14 lead. They had to settle for a field goal. They had a third and one from like the 15, and they get one-on-one Adams on, on, um, on Gonzalez, shallow cross. Gonzalez there makes the play PBU keeps them out of the end zone.
Starting point is 00:16:52 That's a huge play in the game when it's, especially when it's a three point victory. Um, so you have what you have at weapons, but in terms of what you've got on the defensive side, which has been really poor, uh, the last few weeks, I think you did as well as you could have. And I know it's a Patriots show, but it's just really funny to me how bad the Jets are with so much hype this year. I mean, they cannot figure it out. They could not get it out of get out of their own way. And this was the matchup of two cheerleader NFL coaches. If we're being totally honest, two coaches who are way out of their depth and are just trying to keep positive vibes on their sidelines. So the players will
Starting point is 00:17:37 like them and try to play for them. That's what this is. I mean, I what's the name of Umbricht or whatever for the jets. I mean that's that's David Cully incarnate man you remember David Cully of the of the Texans a few years ago their sacrificial lamb they just threw out there for one year because he'd been a position coach forever in the NFL and he's just out there just clapping up everything and and you know not even wearing a headset some of the time because he's a football guy that's what what this guy is for the Jets. He's a total clown. You just throw a clown nose on him and trot him out there and keep Aaron Rodgers happy. And the Patriots coaching position is obviously not much better with Gerard Mayo and Alex Van Pelt doing this ridiculous dance on the
Starting point is 00:18:19 sideline. I'm all for celebrating a touchdown, but when you're one and six at the time and you're pulling off stuff like that with how bad your coaching has been all year, it's like, give me a break. This used to be a proud franchise. Now, when there are two wins, there are two wins in the first half of the season. What you can point to is a Gatorade shower and win one. And this like elaborate handshake between the OC and the head coach dancing on the sideline and win number two.
Starting point is 00:18:47 It's it, it is, it is always great to beat the jets. Let's be totally honest. It's always great to beat the jets. It's not so great that you might've lost your starting quarterback for a little bit. Let's talk about what that means for the Patriots and how it related to this
Starting point is 00:19:02 game, what it will mean for them going forward. That's coming up next on this Patriots postcast. Well, first I got to tell you about game time, okay? Because now the Patriots look to be doing something exciting, right? And they've got a couple of games on the road the next two weeks against bad teams. So you can, well, one bad, one not great.
Starting point is 00:19:22 And you can build up that momentum, have the Rams back here in a couple of weeks and you want to get out to the game, get out to Foxborough. GameTime is the place to go. It's the only place I go to buy my tickets. I love their all-in pricing tool that you can toggle when you get in the app. So that price you see is the price you're going to pay.

What time is it? Game time. Patriots three point winners over the jets today,
Starting point is 00:20:19 locked on sports, Boston Patriots postcast, by the way, be sure to tune in tomorrow. And the rest of the week was, we've got you covered every day with locked on Patriots with Mike debate. He's going to bring more of a breakdown, a little bit less of, you know, smiley giggly, more of a good old fashioned football breakdown. The rest of this week and get you ready for these next two for the Patriots,
Starting point is 00:20:38 which is kind of what I want to focus on here in this final segment. While also talking about Drake may, because you go, you go to Nashville next week and the best team football team in Nashville is still Vanderbilt so that's not a good sign for the Tennessee Titans and then at Chicago the week after which we'll see about Chicago Chicago is a a decent outfit um Caleb Williams has not been fantastic he's playing against Jaden Daniels right now. Great matchup. But you got those and then the Rams who are after that. But if you don't have Drake May, I don't feel confident in any of them.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Even Tennessee, who's just terrible. Tennessee's awful. Last I checked, they were losing by like seven touchdowns to Detroit. Like they're just a dreadful, dreadful football team and franchise at this point, which is what the Patriots are teetering on most weeks. But without Drake may in there, you become the team that you were the first, whatever, four or five weeks,
Starting point is 00:21:38 five weeks of the season, six weeks of the season, whatever it was. And the Patriots just happened to play a team that was just as bad this week in the Jets. But you can't throw it down the field, really. You can't get it to anyone that's not named Hunter Henry in the passing game.
Starting point is 00:21:56 The second drive I think Jacoby had today, they had a third and eight, and they threw it four yards downfield. And they had two guys in the pattern that were running short of the sticks. And it's like, that's, that to me is the worst play in football. Like I hate on third downs when teams go behind the line of scrimmage, but at least I kind of understand some of that of like, Hey, you can get some blockers out in front and, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:22 get guys to maybe break one tackle and you're there. But typically I love just throwing beyond the sticks on a third down. I know that's, that's crazy, but the Patriots decided to do the worst option out of any of those three and throw it four yards down the field. And I was like, this is, this is the Jacoby Brissett offense. This is what it is. And that is what it is. And if you have that for full games the next couple of weeks you're not going to win them and drake may was making plays happen with his legs a couple of good runs it giveth it taketh away because he had a 17 yard touchdown on the ground his first rushing touchdown of his career and then he got hurt on a play where he was sliding and got hit helmet to helmet. It looked like as he was going into a slide.
Starting point is 00:23:10 I'm still trying to kind of see how dirty it is. I only saw one replay, which was during the game. I should have probably watched that again before coming on here. I know, but those are so bang bang when they're going into the slide. And so the slow motion replay is not going to do any favors of really how how bang bang that play was uh but it looked like that there was helmet to helmet as drake may was going into a slide so you'd have to see it in real time to see if the guy uh could have held up on it but either way i mean concussions are really tricky and you see just how different this
Starting point is 00:23:46 offense is when number 10 is not out there. And I mean, man, he covers up a lot of holes for you. He makes some of his receivers look good. He makes the offensive line look a lot better, which by the way, offensive line was okay today. It was okay. There were still times where they were pretty bad and they couldn't handle a simple stunt against Quinn and Williams in that game. Twice, I think there was one play that was a 39 yard reception to Hunter Henry that was taken off the board because of a penalty. And it was a holding penalty on Michael Jordan and Jacoby Brissett still got hit on the play. So there's still glimpses of just how bad this offensive line is in terms of its makeup, but overall they've been,
Starting point is 00:24:29 they have not been the issue the last couple of weeks. Part of that is Drake May. In fact, a huge part of that is Drake May. And as Giselle once so eloquently put, he cannot throw the ball and catch the ball, which is what I thought after that Tyquan Thornton drop. Tyquan also has a huge play in that game. I think it was that penultimate drive. It was a third nine and they went to him. He broke a tackle and got a first down. So it's still a brutally bad wide receiver unit. We'll see if Jalen Polk's back next week. But as we saw in these last few weeks, I don't know if that's good or bad for you if he is back. But these next two, if Drake May's in there, those are winnable. Tennessee, bad. Stinky,
Starting point is 00:25:15 really bad. Okay. The Will Levis-Jacoby Brissett matchup would set this league back decades if that is the case. But Jacoby Brissett which will be percent drake or excuse me will levis drake may now we're talking and then of course what we're looking at in a couple weeks at chicago so if you have a a drake may caleb williams matchup one verse three in the draft that could be a ton of fun a ton of fun and then the rams coming in after that the rams are about to fire sale this this trade deadline before that game. Like Cooper Cup's available. Who knows if Matthew Stafford's available? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:25:48 But you could have a real reeling team coming into Foxborough in a couple of weeks in the LA Rams. So just look at that going forward. But obviously we got to hope for the best for Drake May. If he's not out there, then yeah, you might be talking about 0-3 in that stretch again and another losing streak. But for now, the Patriots are still the Jets' daddy. They still own them.
Starting point is 00:26:08 There's still just two wins for the Jets against the Patriots in the last decade. And this was supposed to be their best team in 15 years, at least, coming into this season. And you just lost to the 2-6 Patriots. And for New England, hey, it could be some momentum. It could be some momentum. Tune in for Mike DeBate tomorrow.
