Patriots fans, thank you for joining me to help kick off another week here on the Lockdown
Patriots podcast.
And you heard me introduce today's show as Maybe Maybe Not Monday.
And I'm sure you're probably wondering what that means.
I guess it could take on a lot of different meanings, but for the purposes of today's
pod, it refers to the Patriots quarterback position.
And I know, folks, we've talked a lot about the Patriots quarterback position since Tom
Brady's departure.
In fact, we've probably talked more quarterbacks than any other position on the Patriots roster.
And you probably thought that the outlook on the Patriots quarterbacks this year was
pretty straightforward.
After all, we watched the 2020 NFL Draft come and go without the Patriots addressing it, at least until the undrafted free agents were available. Speaking of free agents, Patriots
pretty much didn't go that route either, unless you count bringing in former Patriot and current
Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer. But the popular consensus among all of us Foxborough faithful is that Jarrett
Stidham is the likely starter. Hoyer will most likely be his backup. And as for Brian Lewerke
or Jamar Smith, well, they're likely vying for either the three position on the depth chart,
or maybe even a spot on the practice squad. But toward the tail end of last week and over the
weekend, the Patriots quarterback room once again found itself the subject of some rumors.
And those rumors tie in pretty strongly when it comes to the climate of this country,
when it comes to justice and social reform.
Several NFL fans and media members alike began speculating that Colin Kaepernick
could be a potential fit in New England.
And as you can imagine, this has caused some stir throughout the fan base,
throughout the national sports media, and even prevailing to the national media as a whole.
Now, we all know about Colin's history.
He essentially sacrificed his career for a cause that he felt so strongly about, and
he was willing to do whatever it took to stand up for it.
For all intents and purposes, Colin got a lot of backlash, a lot of criticism, and if
I'm being brutally honest about this, folks, not a whole lot of support.
But in light of the recent events by everyone across the country, including right here on
the Lockdown Podcast Network,
we're all beginning to see things in a new light.
And that includes the methods by which Colin Kaepernick chose to
use his platform to bring about social change.
In fact, we've even heard Commissioner Roger Goodell admit that the NFL as a whole,
as an entity, was wrong for not listening to the voices of those that were trying to
peacefully protest and therefore bring about much-needed social reform.
From that standpoint, Goodell's comments left little to the imagination.
It was an admission of wrongdoing.
Plain and simple.
But on a subjective standpoint, a lot of people started to look at Goodell's comments and
wonder if this could possibly be the door opening up for a return of Colin Kaepernick
to the NFL.
I've been someone that has long believed that Colin deserves a spot in the NFL if he
chooses to accept one.
At the time in which Colin was essentially being exiled from the NFL, I always felt that
his talent alone earned him the right to gain the spot on an NFL roster and at least compete
for a starting quarterback job.
A couple of years have passed since then and while it's difficult to believe that Colin
would simply be able to walk back onto an NFL football field and start right away, might
be a little bit of a stretch.
But it's clear that even at a young age. But the question is, which quarterback room? Where
in the NFL would Colin Kaepernick have the opportunity to walk back on a football field
and immediately start to compete for a possible starting job, even if it's not this year? Also,
which quarterback room is best equipped to handle the off-field publicity that signing someone like
Colin would bring along.
You guessed it, folks.
Your New England Patriots check off both boxes.
And for those reasons, many have begun to wonder whether or not New England might end
up being the ideal landing spot for Collin.
Again, folks, logistically, it does make some sense.
Even though most of us, myself included, believe that Jarrett Stidham will be your starter
in 2020, he hasn't officially been named the starter yet by Bill Belichick.
Also, the Patriots have shown several times that they're not afraid of off-the-field publicity
and will not shy away from a player just because he may bring additional media attention
if they feel that bringing him in is going to be best for the football team.
That is a point, folks, that I think is important to make.
Is bringing in a player like Colin Kaepernick what's best for the New England Patriots football team?
Well, that's a question we're going to take a deep dive into today here on Locked On Patriots.
And I say we because joining me today here on the pod is another pretty savvy mind when it comes to New England quarterbacks,
the editor-in-chief of Full Press Coverage and my best good friend, Ian Glendon.
And Ian and I will discuss what a potential signing of Colin Kaepernick would mean for
the Patriots on the field, off the field.
And Ian and I will also delve into whether or not it might have been more likely that
the Patriots brought Colin Kaepernick in last season when Tom Brady was still the main man
under center.
Yeah, I know that might sound a little odd, but Ian and I will discuss that and more in
a conversation that I hope you find informative, interesting, and energizing.

Patriots fans, in just a moment, Ian Glendon of Full Press Coverage
will join me here on the Locked On Patriots pod
to discuss how a potential signing of Colin Kaepernick
could impact the Patriots both on the field and off it.
But if any of you might be wondering whether or not Colin Kaepernick
would be welcomed into the Patriots locker room,
you probably don't need to spend a whole lot of time speculating on that any longer.
From the recent comments from numerous New England Patriots, it seems like they'd be willing to
welcome Kaepernick with open arms. Just last Thursday, Patriots running back James White met
with the media, and he said that he fully expects the Pats players to protest during the 2020 NFL
season. Now, he didn't offer any specifics on exactly what the Patriots were planning on doing,
but keep in mind, White was among 17 Patriots players who kneeled during the National Anthem
for one game in September of 2017.
That was done in support of Colin Kaepernick.
Now, I also am well aware that from that point on, Patriots players stood on the sideline
and they locked arms during the National Anthem, and I'll get to why that was in just a moment.
But for White to make this kind of statement is poignant.
First of all, he served as a captain for the past two years in New England.
That means he has a very well-respected voice in that locker room.
He's speaking for the players.
And again, I'm not speaking for anyone else,
but that tells me that Colin Kaepernick's actions are being met with some agreement.
At the very least, they're being met with some understanding.
And James isn't the only one expressing these types of viewpoints either.
Just a few days prior to James' statement, Pat's cornerback Jason McCourty went on his double
coverage podcast that he hosts with his brother Devin and said, quote, back in 2017, it was clear
as day that they weren't on board with anything Cap was trying to say. And it was more about,
hey, how do we get guys to stand up for the national anthem? How do we get guys not to have fans booing us? How do we get guys to
stand up so we don't lose sponsors? It was all from a business standpoint, unquote. And that
really does speak a lot to what the climate of the country was just a couple of years ago as to
where it is now. The Patriots players seem to be united in this front, and folks, it's one of the
main reasons why the Patriots seem to be a logical destination for Colin if he chooses to make
an NFL return.
Yes, technically there's a spot open in the Patriots rotation when it comes to quarterback,
but most importantly, the players in this locker room, the coaching staff, and the ownership
are well-versed in being able to handle added media attention.
They've done it in so many circumstances that in order for me to name them all would take
up an entire podcast.
I'm not going to do that today.
I think it's simply enough to say that at the very least, the Patriots do have a great
deal of leadership still in this locker room.
And that's important, folks.
Don't forget, even though it's been said that Tom Brady wasn't necessarily the vocal
rah-rah leader that some other quarterbacks or superstars have been in the past, he still provided a great deal of leadership in that locker room. Even if it was simply leading
by example, the fact that guys like James White and Devin and Jason McCourty are stepping up into
these roles makes you realize that even with Brady's departure, things are still going to be
okay in Foxborough this year. And even though the team may not enjoy the high level of success that
we've had here for the past two decades, the team is still in good hands,
even if the hands of their Golden Boy quarterback is now taking snaps under center in Tampa Bay.
But folks, we're Patriots fans.
We don't want to think of Tom Brady taking snaps down in Florida now, do we?
We want to remember the GOAT,
exactly as he was leading us to an unprecedented six Super Bowl titles in 20 years.
And if you want to keep that dream alive, well, I have just the thing for you.

Take home a piece of the goat,
Tom Brady, today.
Patriots fans,
the attention of my guest today
might be focused on Tampa Bay,
but his heart is still in Foxborough.
He is still the steward
of Southern New England, of course. He is still the steward of Southern New England.
Of course, he is a great friend to locked-on patriots,
but a better friend and a colleague to me. He continuously to tirely fight the good fight for logic
when it comes to all things related to Tom Brady
and the connection he will always have to New England.
He is the editor-in-chief of Full Press coverage
and the host of a plethora of shows on Full Press Radio,
and he's circling the wagons on the Full Press Buccaneers beat as well.
He is my esteemed colleague, my best good friend, Ian Glendon joins us today.
Ian, hello.
La la la.
What's up, buddy?
How we doing?
We're doing good.
We're doing well.
Kicking off the week here on Lockdown Patri. And could not think of a better man to share the microphone with to kick off a new week.
And to talk some issues that I think are very relevant to our fan base.
Very relevant to our culture.
Very relevant to our society.
And you always take a level-headed approach to everything when we speak.
So I always thought it would be good to bring you in to talk a little Patriots quarterbacks.
We tend to do that a lot here when you're on the airwaves here on Locked On Patriots.
And I do assume that you heard Tom Brady is no longer the quarterback of the New England Patriots, Ian.
I know it's not very highly publicized, but that has led to some opinions on the position.
And as of late, a new rumor has emerged.
And again, I thought you'd be the perfect
person to address this with today. Popular consensus, my friend, tells us that Jarrett
Stidham is going to be the starter in 2020. Some lingering speculation that Brian Hoyer could end
up being the guy initially, but you and I have hit the Stidham stump before. We have for a number of
weeks now, and we believe he's going to be the Patriots quarterback under center when the season kicks off. But again, the past few days, even the past couple of weeks, have given way to
some rumors that Colin Kaepernick could end up finding his way into the Patriots quarterback
locker room this season. And I think if we're both being honest, the events that are shaping
our nation right now with regard to social injustice have been the catalyst of those rumors. I'm of the school of thought that I believe Colin deserves a chance to return to
the football field. He's deserving of that on his talent alone. I also believe that it's very
unlikely to happen in New England, not because of the off-field issues at all, because I think if
history's proven us anything, my friend, it's that the Patriots have proven that they can handle off-field publicity
better than most NFL franchises, maybe even better than most sports franchises.
I believe it would not be in the best interest of the football team on the field.
And I opened the show today to talk about a few of those reasons why.
But again, you have your finger on the pulse of society
and your finger on the pulse of Patriots Nation
pretty well my friend when you heard the Kaepernick rumors the most recent Kaepernick rumors what was
your reaction and do you believe that this could be a good fit in New England or you believe that
this probably is not likely to happen because of the on-field conflict that it would cause
when it comes to developing a guy like Jared Stidham.
Look, I'm glad his name is being brought up and rumors are out there because because maybe like you said, maybe this will be the catalyst to finally get him a job, which, again, people
sit there and say, oh, well, he was this. He was that he was, you know, was he, you know, this
all world unbelievable quarterback?
He had his moments, for sure.
But certainly, based on some of the other signal callers that we've seen get backup jobs at the very least,
he deserves a chance to play.
I just don't think it's in New England. And for know for a number of reasons the you know the most the
biggest thing is the team seems to believe in jared sit-em every indication that we've had
you know this whole offseason since tom brady said he wasn't coming back um was jared sit-ems
the guy every move they've made jared sit-ems the guy jared sit-ems the guy and i tend to believe
you know the the team.
And look, if Bill thought that Colin Kaepernick would make this team better, Colin Kaepernick
would get signed. So that doesn't mean he's not a good football player. I just think that the
timing and the situation is just not right for him in New England. However um i again i'm happy that the that that his name is being brought up
again because i i do hope that what is going on is going to shine a new light on his situation
what he did and and maybe maybe even you know you you can't you'll never be able to determine
you know if he does sign with a team what this team or coach's motivations are i mean we yeah i'm i i'll say i'm a fairly uh i don't know i i just i i can be very
um uh what's the word i'm looking for here i'm completely drawn a bit blank um um i sometimes i
think the worst you know out of every situation a cynic there we go i couldn't find the word very good
sometimes i can be a cynic i really can but and i i try to not like you know let that you know i i
just think that like whatever motivation someone has to sign him you know is it necessarily going
to be the you know with the best reasons you know i don't know i mean we've seen a majority of these
owners over the last four years
not move an inch so all of a sudden if overnight they decide that they want to sign them then
yeah i probably look at it as probably a i don't want to call it a pr stunt um but certainly a move
that they probably figure gets them in the good graces of the of the majority but the bottom line
is look you know he deserves to get a chance to
play and you know we've seen the the recycled uh quarterbacks go through this league for the last
four years without him getting a sniff and you know again it's it's it's a shame i just don't
think uh ultimately at the end of day it's going to be in new england because i i think at the end
of day it's all about football and i think they're very happy with jarrett stidham um i i think we've seen a lot of indication that jarrett stidham is is is doing the things he's he's supposed to do it
at this point and if not more in terms of taking a leadership role with some of these uh guys and
organizing workouts things that we've seen tom brady doing let's not forget he did play a season
under tom brady whether or not you want to think that Tom Brady was miserable all season last year,
that's a debate for another day.
But he still learned under Brady.
He still learned how to be a patriot and how to be a consummate pro.
And I think that's what you're going to get out of Stidham.
And I think Belichick and the coaching staff in the front office, they believe that too.
So I think it comes down to basically that they're just happy with their current situation there's no need to to mess that up absolutely you made some great points that
i want to expound upon my friend as you usually do again this is why we have you on here that and i
just love talking football with you anyway and uh enjoy you know hearing you stumble for words at
the time i'm only kidding folks i do as. I can take those types of jabs at
Ian. We've known each other for quite some time. And believe me, he'll take them back at me the
minute I do it. But in any case, my friend, the point that you made that I really want to come
back to is on field. And again, I made a couple of comments briefly to kind of tease our discussion
here today to open the show. But to me, on field does not indicate that Colin Kaepernick can no longer play the game,
folks.
I want that to be very clear.
Ben Bowen of the Boston Globe tweeted out on Monday morning that in Colin Kaepernick's
last full season, or his last season in the NFL, really, that he was taking meaningful
snaps was back in 2016.
That seems a long time ago.
It really seems like it has been a lifetime ago.
He made 11 starts through
16 touchdowns, four interceptions, had a 90.7 passer rating, which was 17th in the league.
He had higher yards per attempt than Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Carson Wentz,
and he also led all quarterbacks with 39 rushing yards per game. So in that respect,
you have to look at it and say, yes, he'd be very rusty right now. But there was still a level that Colin Kaepernick was playing the game of football at when he left the NFL that
proved that he was definitely capable of being at least a backup in the NFL and that he really
shouldn't have been shunned the way he was. And you've seen elements of that in some of the
statements made by Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, some of the statements made by Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, some
of the statements made by a lot of players throughout the league saying, well, we signed
this guy.
Why didn't we sign Colin?
I think we all know the reason for that.
His talent alone, like I said before, does allow him the opportunity to come out and
to play the game of football.
The reason why I don't feel it fits in New England is not because of what he can do
physically on the field. It again comes back to Jared Stidham. And I think you articulated this
very well. The Patriots want to see what they have in Jared Stidham. I think that's where they're
committed to this season. I think the fact that they brought in a guy like Brian Hoyer only
solidifies that if they weren't sure what Jared brings to the table, they know he can be a backup.
They would have brought in a guy like Jamis backup. They would have brought in a guy like Jameis Winston. They would have brought in a guy like Cam Newton, even a guy like Andy Dalton. I think if they weren't sure that this was going to be the guy they wanted to see what they had, they would have brought in someone else from the outside, someone who's not as rusty as a guy like Colin Kaepernick is from not having played the game for a number of years now. The other part of this is if you
want to bring in someone from outside the system, outside the Patriots system, this is not the year
to do it. I mean, we've missed significant time of development for the COVID-19 pandemic.
You don't have OTAs. You don't have mini camps. You're not having that time of bonding that a lot of these players
usually get with quarterbacks, especially new players that are coming in to learn a new system.
It's going to be a hurried up. It's going to be a crammed session for these training camps that
will open. It's just not the right time to develop someone that hasn't played in a long time and also
expect them to come in and learn a new system right off the bat. I just think it's a bad fit all the way around. If Colin does end up coming to New England,
you know it was probably made by a decision that was higher up on the totem pole than
that of Robert Kraft, excuse me, than that of Bill Belichick, maybe even than that of Robert
Kraft. And I think at that point, a signing like that would probably be seen as being disingenuous by the New England Patriots. That's not what they stand for. They
want meaningful change. They want meaningful progress in this situation. And I think people
would see the signing of Colin as being a pure PR stunt. Colin deserves better than that. The
movement that he supports definitely deserves better than that. And so do the Patriots. They
don't deserve to be dragged through as being a team that's just going through the
motions to appease the masses.
It's only going to backfire.
And I think that really is probably the main reason why we won't see Colin in a New England
uniform this year.
Pats fans, Ian Glendon of Full Press Coverage and I will continue our discussion on Colin
Kaepernick in just a moment.

I'm going to flip the script on you for just a moment.
Staying on the similar topic, but you mentioned Tom Brady and you mentioned him being miserable
last year.
And I don't think there was any carryover to he and Jarrett and the relationship they
had in the quarterback room last year.
But if this had happened one year earlier, meaning that the movement to sign Colin was as universally accepted this year as it was last year, because we saw Collins try out last year.
We saw that he did get an opportunity to work out for teams. There was a very contestuous,
very acrimonious relationship between the two sides, leading you to believe that Colin was
never going to even be able to sniff the NFL again. If the climate had changed the way it is
now last year with Tom Brady on staff, do you think it would be more likely that Colin would
possibly be a member of the New England
Patriots I actually believe it would but I want to get your take on this um well I mean it depends
does this mean Tom Brady what because like I would say less likely because I still think a year
ago you know that the Patriots would probably have preferred to have kept Tom Brady at their rate, at their
cost, you know, and everything. And I think, you know, if this were a year ago, I think it would
be far too soon to give up hopes that, you know, because again, this would have been, you would
still have Tom Brady under contract. And I don't think you bring in Colin Kaepernick with Brady
under contract. And at the same time, I think you still anticipated him staying with the Patriots. And that's one of the main reasons why, you know, New England was never a good spot for him to begin with, because like, you know, look, Bill Belichick's never going to purposely not do something to help the team if it's if there's a opportunity to do so um implying that he wouldn't
for some i don't know for for some character flaws that that he's never shown before in his
entire life bill belichick decides no we just don't want to sign him i i don't believe that
like i said if he really felt that he would help this team win and, you know, you asked me and I've said it for as long as I I don't think there's another quarterback that makes the Patriots as good as they were last year.
You know what I mean? Like, I just don't you know, with Tom Brady, you don't get that.
You know, that was never a question as to whether or not to bring him in.
You know, now, yeah, I would say there's more of a chance.
But at the same time they also invested
that same year into a young quarterback you know a player that doesn't isn't expected to start right
away or wouldn't you wouldn't expect to push the starter because you know you're not sitting here
trying to motivate tom brady tom brady doesn't need to be motivated you're just trying to get
a deal done so he stays in new england as long as possible obviously that didn't happen uh you know
but at the end of the day like I said they invested a draft pick in Jarrett Stidham that
I mean there's no no one out there that knows more about Jarrett Stidham than Bill Belichick
right now good point I can guarantee you that and not only knows more but knows more by uh an
absurd amount of levels because even even the the most connected
beat writer uh in the game isn't you know standing in on every little thing that happens with these
players especially with a guy like jared stidham because you know you you had to figure at a
certain point last year you know belichick's not a dumb guy. You know, he can foresee things happening. So you better believe he kept a pretty close eye on what Jared was doing and how he was developing.
Because, again, it dictated how they approached this offseason.
Were they limited because of money?
Sure.
But at the same time, they're not just going to go with an unproven guy that they don't believe in.
You know, theoretically say they don't believe in him.
They're not just going to go with him because he's cheap on the roster. No, you're
good. You know, Belichick would be like, OK, if we don't think he's good enough, we'll go out and
find someone else. They're not going to sit there and hold on to a guy because of pride. That's just
not going to happen. So, you know, again, I actually it's weird, but I do kind of disagree with you.
I think there was less likely of a chance a year ago had this happened versus now, although I put both at a very, very slim percentage of ever happening.
You know, in a way, I'm glad.
And that's kind of why I asked you the question, because I did figure you were going to disagree with me on this.
And honestly, I think you're probably right to disagree with me on this, but I'll explain my position. The reason why I say
it might've been a little more likely to add Colin to the mix with Tom Brady on the roster is
Colin's presence on this team was not ever going to be a threat to a guy like Tom Brady. If Colin
was signed, I think a lot of people would understand
that he was coming here to rehabilitate his career and to be Tom Brady's backup. I don't
think there's anyone that would be clamoring for Colin to take over the quarterback duties
for Tom Brady, including Colin himself. I think he'd probably look at it and say,
no, Brady is the better quarterback to be able to lead this team. The reason why I say it was
a little bit more likely that he would be here with Tom is his to lead this team. The reason why I say it was a little bit more likely
that he would be here with Tom is his presence on this team with Jarrett. If Jarrett starts to
struggle, if he has difficulty picking up the Patriots offense and the Pats went to Brian
Hoyer instead of going to a guy like Colin Kaepernick, if he were on this roster, I think
the public outcry would be a little bit higher and maybe
a little bit louder than it would be if he were sitting behind Tom Brady.
So I agree with you.
I think it was unlikely in both scenarios.
I just think that the way the Patriots do business, the way they operate on the field
is different from what Colin would have been a fit for either this year or even last year.
Because let's not forget, the Patriots offense wasn't designed for a mobile quarterback it's designed for Tom Brady a pocket passer a true
pocket passer so Colin coming in here would change the complexity of that and it would really be a
difficult fit to mold the two of them together this year I think because of the lack of development
time that they've had it makes it a rough fit again, even though his pathway to
getting a starting job might be a little bit easier going behind Jared Stidham than Tom Brady.
So that was my logic for that. But I like the way you answered it. And I think you lent a lot of
wisdom and counsel, as I like to say, my friend, as you always do to to that certain situation.
But one thing, buddy, that we can agree on is that Tom Brady is not walking through that door.
We said it earlier.
It's difficult.
I know you're down in Tampa.
You're psyched to have him down in Tampa.
You want to see him shoot the cannons.
He and Gronk are going to get on the pirate ship,
and they're going to be looting like Jack Sparrow and Barbosa.
It's going to be a great time for you down in Tampa Bay.
But here in New England,
we have to think about the past when it comes to Tom Brady.
As painful as it is, we have to think about the past. But you know what makes me feel
better about the past is when I look at some of the great pieces of Tom Brady memorabilia that
are out there. And right now, Ian, I'm looking at something I know you're going to love to look at
and check out my Twitter feed, folks, because if you haven't seen this Tom Brady football,
you're missing out. It is the
commemorative Tom Brady football saluting his amazing 20 year run with the Patriots, arguably
the greatest 20 year run in the history of the NFL. And our friends at Nyko Sports has the one
and only Tom Brady football. The football is fully embossed. Panel one has an action shot of Brady
with the six Super Bowl championship logos. Panel two, a second action shot with Brady's NFL records and career highlights.
And we both know, Ian, there's a ton of them.
Panel three, a year-by-year breakdown of games, yards, and touchdowns,
including statistics from the playoffs and the Super Bowls.
Folks, this is a Nyko Sports exclusive football and a limited edition of 2020 for only 2020 of them being made.
But the best part is this football can be yours for just $99.
And proceeds are being donated to the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation.
So your purchase helps a great cause.
