Locked On Patriots - Daily Podcast On The New England Patriots - Pay Up: Patriots Must Pay Christian Gonzalez After Devon Witherspoon Deal

Episode Date: August 16, 2026

New England Patriots set the Christian Gonzalez contract market—will the front office lock in their cornerstone cornerback before the price soars? Nick Cattles lays out how Devon Witherspoon’s mas...sive extension resets expectations, projecting a potential 4-year, $140 million deal for Gonzalez and warning that waiting could leave the team juggling two blockbuster extensions with Drake Maye looming. Concerns intensify as injuries ravage the Patriots’ interior offensive line depth, prompting emergency signings and raising fears of a 5-alarm fire if another starter goes down. Nick Cattles spotlights standout camp performances from Romeo Doubs—emerging as a dominant WR2—and analyzes Carlton Davis’s bumpy return, Drake Maye’s hot streaks, and the “bully ball” mentality fueled by the team’s imposing pass catchers. Starting point is 00:00:00 The contract Christian Gonzalez was waiting to get done is done, and now it's time for the Pats to open their wallet. This is Locked-on Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots. Your daily New England Patriots podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's happened? And I am your host, Nick Cattels.
Starting point is 00:00:29 On today's episode, after the last week or two, there's absolutely zero whispers about any Romeo Dobbs concerns at camp. In the second segment, the backup interior offensive line situation is now a five alarm fire. But first, wrapping up a Christian Gonzalez extension just got theoretically much easier. Today's episode is brought to by GameTime. Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase. Before I get started, obviously I am on the road. This is a remote episode, so might get a little funky from time to time. I know the lighting isn't great. I know the sound isn't as good as it usually is,
Starting point is 00:01:08 but we're making chicken salad out of chicken poop. So here we are, locked on Patriots in D.C. Talking about Christian Gonzalez and the contract extension that we've all been waiting to happen. Now, Mike Frable, before we get into the contract situation, he told the media that Christian Gonzalez is missing practice because he's, quote, unquote, physically unavailable. This was transcribed by Mark Daniels of Mass Live.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Here's what Mike Vrable had to say about Gonzalez. Quote, Christian was unavailable, physically unavailable for the practice, just like other players that I told to have treatment, and everybody has a plan here. There were other guys that were in that same category. If you want to list the names, Harold Landry, Christian Barmore, et cetera. So make sure they're all included. They were all in the group of what they did.
Starting point is 00:01:54 So Mike Frabble is telling us the reason why Christian Gonzalez has not been practicing, it is physical, going back to last Monday's practice. where he was involved with the play, Romeo Dobbs, and he came down hard on the ground, and he has not been at practice since that play at the end of that Monday practice. Now, let's look at the contract situation. Multiple reports told us that Christian Gonzalez was waiting for Devin Witherspoon to agree to a contract extension, and then he was going to work on his own extension. He wanted Witherspoon to go first so he could make more money.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Well, over the weekend, we found out. Devin Witherspoon's contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks is done. Four years, $132 million. That is $33 million on the average per year. $101 million guaranteed. Now you go back to Trent McDuffie's contract that was signed with the Rams, that extension. Trent McDuffie got $100 million guaranteed. So Devin Witherspoon gets $101 million guaranteed.
Starting point is 00:03:00 It's not a coincidence. When you look at the details of this contract and how this money is dispersed to Witherspoon, Witherspoon is going to make $59 million in 2026 and 2027. And that's important. How much money, how much bonus money is up front? Almost $60 million in 26 and 27 for Witherspoon. So the Christian Gonzalez market is now set, folks. If you want Christian Gonzalez to be a patriot long term, and I certainly do, we're looking at probably a 102 plus million dollars guaranteed.
Starting point is 00:03:38 We're looking at likely around $35 million average per year. You're looking at more than $60 million in bonus money that will be sent to Gonzalez between 2026 and 2027. If you're wondering, Gonzalez is currently on the books for about 20 million guaranteed for this year and next year. So obviously that would be the Patriots stepping up and paying some big time money to Gonzalez in bonus cash. It has to be more than $60 million because if you look at that Witherspoon contract, Gonzalez is going to want more than Witherspoon. And we've talked about it before. They share the same agent.
Starting point is 00:04:20 So this is the same agent working on a deal with the Patriots that just got this deal done with the Seahawks. Now, you could really look at this contract from Devin Witherspoon and say that it is a break for the Patriots because Witherspoon is going to make $2 million more or so on the APY, the average per year on this extension. So when you look at Dr. Duffy's deal and you're talking about $31 million, well, now you've got Witherspoon at $33 million. So it's a $2 million per year bump on that extension, that new money. And it's a $1 million bump in the guaranteed money. McDuffie got $100 million. Witherspoon gets 101. So this could have been worse for the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:05:07 If Devin Witherspoon went to the Seahawks and said, I want $35 million a year, I want $110 million guaranteed up front, then Witherspoon might have been able to get a contract like that. And so if Witherspoon ended up getting $35 million APY and $110 million guaranteed, let's just say hypothetically, then the Patriots would be looking at if you want to keep Christian Gonzalez, you're paying in 36, 37 million per year and you're giving him, you know, 110, 112, $115 million guaranteed. So the fact that we see incremental jumps in the average per year and the guaranteed money with this contract between Witherspoon and the Seahawks,
Starting point is 00:05:51 that's actually good news for the Patriots. It's a break because it could have been much worse. Now, here's a reminder. The contract extension that Christian Gonzalez would theoretically, hypothetically sign with the Patriots, those extension years get tacked on to the two existing years with the bonus money up front. So if you really look at this and you try to figure out what a Gonzalez deal at the end of the day would look like, you're you're probably talking about a four-year, $140 million deal that that would put Gonzalez at $35 million at the average per year on the extension money. I'll talk about the totality in a minute, but on just the extension, four-year, $140 million
Starting point is 00:06:42 extension would give him $35 million APY, which would be $2 million above what Witherspoon just got. and you're looking at, I would think, $62 million in 26 and 27 with a spoon got about $59 million. So you bump it up $2 or $3 million for Gonzalez. And the guaranteed money, you're going to have to beat that $101 million, guaranteed, in total guarantees. I don't know if Gonzalez would take 102. I don't know if he's looking at 105. But that's kind of the range. but when you look at that extension being tacked on to the next two years of Gonzalez's contract
Starting point is 00:07:25 from his rookie deal, the total payout for Christian Gonzalez would be six years, $160 million or so. So on the length of that deal over six years, when you include the final two years of Gonzalez's rookie contract, which includes the 50-year option, the Patriot have picked up, When you look at it in totality, you're talking six years, 160 million. And the APY over the six years, not just the new money with the extension, the average per year is about 26.6 million or so. And I think that's a fair deal. And if I'm the Patriots, I do it.
Starting point is 00:08:05 I do it right now. I open my wallet and I get this deal done. Yes, it's a lot of money. But Gonzalez is one of your best players on this football team. He's under 25 years old. He has put together a terrific camp before he got banged up. He's been excellent throughout this camp. He has been the ultimate professional.
Starting point is 00:08:24 He wants to be a leader. He's acting like a leader. I would pay the man his money. And I think the market is now set with this Witherspoon deal getting done. You get back to the table and you hammer out the final details. And you want to get it done now if you're the Patriots. You don't want to drag your feet because if you get into next off season, you've got a big problem. that big problem is you would have to figure out a way to pay both Gonzalez and Drake May.
Starting point is 00:08:51 Drake May is looking at getting, you know, $70 million on the APY. Look at the quarterback market, folks. He's going to make $65 to $70 million annually on that deal. That's what it's going to take. He's going to end up getting guaranteed money of over $200 million. So if you're the Patriots, you want to split that up. You don't want to pay $300 million in total. guarantees next off season to Drake May and Christian Gonzalez combined.
Starting point is 00:09:20 You want to get this deal done right now with Gonzalez and you get his money on the book starting right now as far as that guaranteed money and the signing bonuses that you will give him. So I would imagine business-wise, you want to get this done if you're the Patriots. You want to get this done. You don't want to walk into next off-season with two gigantic contract extensions that you have to iron out with your two best players. It's not what you want.
Starting point is 00:09:51 That would be far from idea. All right, I had some concerns after the preseason game last week about the interior offensive line depth. Those concerns, they're not going away. They're actually more significant now than they've ever been. It's coming up next. This is Lockdown Patriots. It's part of the Lockdown Podcast Network.

During Friday's episode, I talked about Ben Brown, Andrew Ruppstich, backup interior offensive linemen, both getting injured during that Colts preseason game. And I said, that's the biggest story. That's the biggest story from that game.
Starting point is 00:11:36 I know people want to talk about what was sexy first and foremost. People were talking about Kyle Williams. You want to talk about Tommy DeVito's, streaky accuracy and all that stuff. The biggest story coming out of that game against the game. Colts was the fact that two of your top interior offensive linemen, when you look at backups, when you look at your depth, two of those guys got hurt. And the interior offensive line is something we've discussed for months. Ever since the draft when the Patriots made the two moves that they made to move up and
Starting point is 00:12:03 draft Caleb Lomu, move up and draft Gabacus, and gave up those two fourth round picks in this past draft, we talked about interior offensive line was one of those positions that I think they would have utilized one of those picks and invested in a guard. that didn't happen. It was a calculated risk that they took. And they walked into this camp with the interior offensive line depth being a major, major question. And none of that has gone away. And now with the injuries to Ben Brown and Andrew Rupsich,
Starting point is 00:12:32 I mean, this is five alarm fire type stuff when you talk about the depth of the interior. Because the news did not get much better over the weekend. Ben Brown is going to be out several weeks. He's likely out for the rest of the preseason. And Andrew Rupstitch was placed actually on. injured reserve, so he's done for the year. So no Andrew Rupsich in a banged-up Ben Brown for the next several weeks. And so during Sunday's walkthrough, the depth of the offensive line looked like this.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Marcus Bryant at left tackle, Mackay Butler at left guard, Jacob Rizzi undrafted free agent at center. You got James Hudson, who is a tackle by trade playing guard. He was your backup right guard, and your backup right tackle was Caleb Lono. So you've got a rookie who's been up and down at right tackle. You've got Marcus Bryant, the seventh round pick from last year's draft as your backup left tackle right now. Mackay Butler, who isn't great. He's got some power to his game, but he's not great.
Starting point is 00:13:32 He right now is your top backup behind Elijah Vera Tucker. You got the UDFA, Jacob Rizzi, backing up Jared Wilson, and you've got a tackle now who's transitioning to guard at right guard. But that interior, you know, Mackay Butler, Jacob Rizzy, James Hudson. I mean, does anybody feel good about that? I don't feel good about that. And you've got some major, major questions now. And one of the things I do wonder, and we heard Mike Vrable talk about this going back a couple of weeks ago,
Starting point is 00:14:01 Frable mentioned Lomu, Caleb Lomu, has a possibility to train at guard. And I don't want that to happen. But you do wonder, are the Patriots going to entertain that? Are we going to start seeing Caleb Lomu get reps, at guard. Because when you look at this depth, you've got so many questions that you're dealing with. Again, far from ideal. So do we see that? I wouldn't do it. I think right now at this point with Caleb Lomu's camp up and down, like a lot of rookies, a lot of rookie offensive linemen have up and down camps,
Starting point is 00:14:38 right? This is not a surprise. I'm not saying he's a bust or anything, but he's had an up and down camp. I want to keep Lomu at right tackle. If you're going to if you're going to switch him to right tackle, and that's what he's been doing for the majority of this camp, if you're playing him at right tackle, then you play him at right tackle. His natural position is left tackle, so he doesn't necessarily need a ton of reps there.
Starting point is 00:15:00 You've got Will Campbell. That's your franchise left tackle. So if you want to play Lomu at right tackle, then I would keep him there. And I would not put too much on his plate. I think if you start moving him around and cross-training him at guard, then I think that's a problem.
Starting point is 00:15:16 and he actually might be worse at right tackle because of that. All right, the Patriots did sign two Interior Offensive linemen over the weekend. I will give you those names in their backgrounds in a minute. But first, don't forget if you're watching us on YouTube again. I apologize for the lighting, some of the audio stuff, right? It is what it is. I'm on Wi-Fi. I'm in D.C. at a hotel trying to give you the best content I can give you.
Starting point is 00:15:40 If you're watching us on YouTube, don't forget to click that thumbs up. Give us a like. helps us with the algorithm. Don't forget to comment as well. Your thoughts on the Christian Gonzalez hypothetical contract extension I just threw out there. Those comments also help us with the algorithm. And don't forget to subscribe.
Starting point is 00:15:57 The goal is 11,000 subscribers by opening night in Seattle against the Seahawks. The Patriots signed Joe Machowski and Darien Dahlkort over the weekend. These are not impact guys. If you're expecting either of these guys to walk into camp and be a revelation, I think you're reaching.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Darian Dahlcourt played for Alabama, 2019 to 2020. He was a UDFA back in 2024. He has spent time with Baltimore, Washington, Carolina, Cleveland. He has been strictly a practice squad guy. So that's the level of player.
Starting point is 00:16:36 Now, maybe you get more from him, Doug Morone, the assistant offensive line coaches. You know, maybe they coach him up. But, I mean, you're looking at a guy who's really a fringe roster player, if that. And Darian Dallcordy, 6.3 to 320. He had 16 starts at center for Alabama in 2021 and 2022. He then switched to right guard for his senior season.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Joe Machowski, the other signing, he played at Oklahoma State, 2019 to 2024. He was a UDFA last year. He spent time in Denver last season, but he never made the active roster. So again, he's more of a fringe roster type guy, practice squad, type guy. He's 6-5-305, play center. He started 35 games and played in 59 games at Oklahoma State. So that's who you're bringing in. Those are the two moves to this point that have gotten done. And it begs the question, are there any veteran options out there? I remind you, the Patriots brought in Greg Van Roan. You know, veteran guard. Is that a guy? He has not signed with anybody. I don't know if that visit with the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:17:44 did not win the team over? I don't know. But Van Routen's out there. Mackay Beckton is out there. Kevin Zitler is out there. James Daniels is also available. Those are the guys that you're looking at right now. And this is a bigger issue. I can't stress this enough. The interior offensive line depth is a bigger issue because you have injury history there. Elijah Verit Tucker, we know it's well documented. Jared Wilson last year, he missed about a handful of games due to injury. High ankle sprained and a concussion. So you've got some injury history at left guard and center. And you are one injury away right now from an absolute mess. And that's why I'm saying that the backup interior offensive line, the depth there, that situation, five alarm fire.
Starting point is 00:18:35 And I'm hoping maybe somebody gets cut. Maybe the Patriots sign one of those guys I just mentioned. Maybe they sign them as I'm recording this podcast right now. But if, feels like they've got to get something done, and I don't think Joe Machowski and Darian Dalkort are the answers with all due respect to those two guys. By the way, I do want to end on a positive note with the O line here. Marcus Bryant had a really good night at left tackle against Indy in that preseason game, and he is pushing Caleb Lomu to be the third, you know, tackle, the swing tackle on this roster. He's pushing the first round pick. And it's not a bad thing necessarily because if Marcus Bryant proves to be a solid backup left tackle,
Starting point is 00:19:19 then you can devote all of your time with Lomu at right tackle. Coming up, Romeo Dobbs dominant. Carlton Davis returns and more notes from this weekend's practices. Saturday was a lively practice. Sunday was a light walk through. Lots of news and notes from Saturday's session. Let's start with Romeo Dobbs. Romeo Dobbs was dominant on Saturday. Not one, not two, but three touchdowns during Saturday's practice. He moths Charles Woods in the end zone. The video is all over social media. Terrific catch by Romeo Dobbs. And, you know, the first week or two of camp, there were some people that were concerned about Romeo Dobbs. There were people that, you know, didn't quite see it.
Starting point is 00:21:30 Did the Patriots mess up? And I said, you can go back to these podcasts from a couple of weeks ago, pump the brakes, relax, take a deep breath, give Romeo Dobbs time. I believe Romeo Dobbs is going to be an impact player for this football team. I said, I'm very confident that that Romeo Dobbs is going to be the quick. essential number two guy wide receiver for this team by the time they break camp. And now you look back the last week or two, and Dobbs has made consistent impact play after consistent impact play at these camp practices. And again, on Saturday, the dude was dominant.
Starting point is 00:22:09 So I continue to be bullish on Romeo Dobbs' impact on this offense. And by the time you get ready for week one, and we're talking about we're previewing that Seahawks game. week one, I think we're all going to feel pretty darn good about Romeo Dobbs and what he has done during this camp season. Carlton Davis was fully back, full participant this weekend. He had a rough day on Saturday, man. Doug Kye from the Boston Herald posted that Carlton Davis gave up five touchdowns during Saturday's practice. Look, again, I will say it, relax. It's an ugly day. Man, five touchdowns, really? your number two outside corner gave up five touchdowns and a single practice. I have confidence in Carlton Davis.
Starting point is 00:22:54 He has as far as being healthy and out there on the field, I think Carlton Davis has more than proven himself to be a really good number two corner in this league. And I don't think we're going to see a massive drop off. He had missed practice for a few weeks. So he came back on Saturday. Didn't look great. again, we should be more focused on what he looks like heading into week one and not necessarily the first practice back from a hamstring injury when he's out there fully participating.
Starting point is 00:23:24 So the best news is that Davis was out there. He's out there practicing. He got through the hammy. He is now healthy. Drake May on Saturday, it was another example of a really slow start to practice and then your franchise quarterback catching fire. Hot finish from Drake May. Mark Daniels posted that May started one of seven at Saturday's practice, but he finished 10 for 14 with nine of those 10 completions touchdowns. So he got hot. It was another example of Drake May walking out there, sluggish start, all of a sudden gets on a heater and is ripping it.
Starting point is 00:24:05 If we could just figure out the beginning, set it over and over. If we could just figure out how to get Drake May to be good right out of the jump in the game and have that accuracy right out of the gates. Hopefully we continue to see him work on that and we see that improve. And really, when you look at this passing off fence and I talk about Romeo Dobbs, mossing Charles Woods, when you look at these Patriots receivers and I would include the tight ends with this as well, you know, we're talking about guys who are big. the Patriots have size.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Their past catchers are big dudes. A.J. Brown, big dude. Romeo Dobbs, big dude. Mack Hollins, big dude. Hunter Henry. Eli Rairden. These are some big guys. And I think, you know, high point catches, boxing out, so to speak, on, you know, contested
Starting point is 00:24:58 catches, boxing out in the end zone to come down with touchdowns. You know, when Mike Vrable was hired last year, he was talking about his perfect receiver or the receiver model that he loves. And he talked about big targets, big hands, guys who can make contested catches. Those are the truly valuable receivers in the league. And when you look at what the Patriots have done with this roster over the past two years under Mike Grable's guidance, it's clear. Those are the types of receivers and past catches that he likes. And so that continues to be the case.
Starting point is 00:25:35 It's not like Kyle Williams. you know, Kyle Williams is slight. He's not a big dude frame-wise, but he's about 5-11, 6 feet. But you're looking at, you know, Brown and Dobbs and Hollins and Rarden and Henry, Julian Hill, you know, before he got hurt, they're going to play bully ball. They're going to play a bully ball in the red zone. They're going to run it down your throat. And they're going to say, we got bigger receivers, bigger guys than your defenders. And we got a quarterback who was really accurate, especially once he gets cooking.
Starting point is 00:26:04 and he has no fair throwing it up, no fear at all throwing it up for those big targets and betting on his guys. And I think we're going to see a lot of bully football this year from the Patriots inside the 20. Draymont Jones left practice on Saturday early. He was back on Sunday, thankfully. We don't want to see a numbers game here
Starting point is 00:26:26 where you start losing more edges. That would not be a good situation. Harold Landry is still not practicing. So, you know, Draymont Jones left practice early Saturday. He was back for the walkthrough on Sunday. He said he expects to be out there and ready to go on Monday. Monday is expected to be a pretty competitive practice. Tuesday will be a lighter practice.
Starting point is 00:26:49 And then, of course, Wednesday and Thursday, you have joint practices against the Eagles. I am planning on being there at Gillette to watch those two joint practices. So this is a very important week. And it sounds like Draymont Jones will be back. He's fine. He's good to go. go. Gabe Accus, by the way, replaced Draymont Jones during Saturday's practice. He ran with the ones. He had to run stuff. He also had a hurry on the quarterback.
Starting point is 00:27:13 One-on-ones, he did not do great. And, you know, a lot of the reaction that you're getting from the beat riders that are watching Gabe Accus on a daily basis is that he might play with like one speed. Kind of plays with reckless abandoned. And we saw that during the preseason game against the Colts last week, and the Colts took advantage of that aggressiveness that you see from Gabacus. And so that's something he's going to have to work on during this rookie season. Christian Ellis, another guy who was banged up recently, he returned to practice on Saturday. He was limited, but during the walkthrough, it looked like he was out there with the starters.
Starting point is 00:27:51 So certainly seems like Christian Ellis is okay. Seems like Draymont Jones is okay. Again, Carlton Davis is back. Christian Barmore still not practicing. We saw him a little bit during the joint practice with the Colts last week where he was working on individual drills, but he's not out there practicing. So we don't know when Christian Barmore will be back. Mike Giardy of Boston Sports Journal.
Starting point is 00:28:17 He posted that again, the run game, the offense, and running the football was not good on Saturday. And, you know, that's a problem that we have seen now. throughout camp. They've hit a couple, but they have not been able to consistently run the football. They've got to figure that out before week one. They need to run the ball more effectively and consistently this year. Interesting note, Andrew Callahan had in the Herald on Sunday after the walkthrough.
Starting point is 00:28:47 According to Andrew Callahan, Kyle Williams was elevated to the starting group on Sunday. So, you know, he was out there with Drake May. That's an interesting note. We'll see if that means any. anything in the long run. But I think it would make a lot of sense for the Patriots, especially after seeing the Colts preseason game last week.
