The Miami Dolphins look to finish the regular season on a high note in the cold of Foxborough while the pads try to stay healthy and focused.
It's locked on Patriots and Locked on Dolphins with the last crossover episode of the 2025 regular season.
What's happening?
I'm your host of Lockdown Patriots, Nick Cattles, along with my co-pilot from Lockdown Dolphins,
Kyle Crabs for another crossover episode.
And of course, this is the Lockdown Podcast Network.
Now the Numero Uno Sports Podcast Network, your team every day.
On today's crossover, in the third segment, we'll break down our keys to victory.
In the second segment, we get your prime for the marquee matchups at Gillette this Sunday.
But first, it's a very interesting.
Monday for top storylines this weekend.
Crossover Thursday is presented by prize picks.

lineups after you play your first $5 lineup.
All right, Kyle, the dolphins finish the season in Cold Foxborough.
They've been playing great lately.
What's the biggest story heading into this weekend from Mike McDaniel and company?
I think it's that name.
Mike McDaniel, is he going to be around, right?
Like the dolphins, they start slow for the second.
consecutive year.
They get hot and make a run towards 500 for the second consecutive year.
And it falls short for the second consecutive year.
And when the Dolphins lost to the Jets in week 18 last year,
owner Stephen Ross put out his statement and media hasn't heard and the fan base hasn't
heard physically from Stephen Ross since 2022 when Mike McDaniel was hired.
And the statement was status quo, we support Chris Greer and Mike McDaniel to run the
football operation.
We're going to continue on.
in this direction, but do not mistake stability as status quo is good enough.
Well, they start slow.
Chris Greer's moved on.
They mutually part ways, however you want to phrase it.
Chris Greene missed on Halloween.
And the dolphins get hot after that, but here we are potentially staring a second
consecutive eight and nine season in the face where you struggled against the better
opponents on your schedule, where you didn't have the breakthrough win in cold weather
on the road when you miss the playoffs and finish eight nine when you dig yourself a hole
you couldn't dig yourself out of and it really feels a lot like what status quo was last
year so it really sets this kind of fascinating was that change enough right do they want to let
the general manager who they are going to start interviews with next week with candidates do
they want to let him ultimately decide what to do with mike macdaniel does stephen ross decide
I've seen enough that I think there's a glass ceiling here that I want to aspire to be better
then.
So we'll hire the GM and then go about a coaching interview process and that timeline.
So this is kind of like last call, right?
And I think if Mike McDaniel's going to help himself, he gets this team galvanized and
they're energized and they play well and they score an upset.
And I think that's the last best case that Mike can make.
And I think that's what I'll be watching very closely.
for the game in the aftermath.
Yeah, I mean, it's a fascinating situation watching play out from the outside, right?
I mean, you also have the quarterback question.
Now that, too, at Tunga Vialoa is pretty much Dunzo, it looks like in Miami.
So not only are you, if you stick with Mike McDaniel, not only are you sticking with
Mike McDaniel, you got the GM thing you just brought up, and then you're handing the keys
to Mike McDaniel to work with the next quarterback, whether that's, hey, we believe in
Quinn Ewers, or, hey, we're going to go out and sign somebody, or, hey, we're going to
draft somebody. And so now you give him that responsibility. And what you don't want to do,
as you know, Kyle is, you know, reset the clock, so to speak, a year from now with the quarterback,
having to deal with a new system and all of that. We saw the Patriots go through that with
Drake May. You bring in Gerard Mayo. Gerard Mayo was an unmitigated disaster. So you bring in
Mike Vrable, which has obviously worked out very well. But it forced Drake May to go through two new,
you know, two new offenses his first two years in the NFL, which is less than ideal.
So a lot of interesting things that Miami has to figure out.
Meanwhile, I'll tell you what, Kyle, my answer to this question about 36 to 48 hours ago
would have been much different about what the biggest story is heading into this weekend.
It really comes down to one word.
And that word is management.
But, you know, before the past couple of days, I would have said management of who are you going
to play?
Who's healthy?
The balancing act, right?
you want to try to finish strong, you want to run through the tape, so to speak.
But this game, I think it mostly will impact the second or third seed.
I would imagine Denver beats the Chargers with Justin Herbert sitting on Sunday.
But now the management is, how do you manage the distractions?
Because obviously you had one big distraction happen on Tuesday with Stefan Diggs.
And then the very next day, you have another gigantic distraction with Christian Barmore.
Both players, if Dolphins fans are unaware, facing allegations of abuse, assault, females involved, a private chef for Stefan Diggs, the mother of Christian Barmore's child in his situation.
So how does Mike Vrable manage all of this?
How does he keep the distractions away and how does he keep his guys focused on the task at hand on Sunday?
I think it's a monumental challenge and I think it's the biggest question.
Yeah, I look at what New England is positioned for, and I would have said and assumed the same thing before, obviously, the off-the-field allegations this week bubble up.
That was fascinating, right?
Because the Chargers wasted no time, saying, hey, Justin Herbert's not going to play this week in week 18, right?
So your ears kind of perk up a little bit.
And the Dolphins were a team that went into a matchout with playoff implications last year in week 18 scoreboard watching.
And the team kind of folded up shop, you know, when it became a parent.
that the Broncos were going to win and they weren't going to get the help that they needed.
They kind of threw their hands up.
Tyree Kill took his ball and went home and felt sorry for himself and played three plays in the second half.
And then threw a hissy fit in the locker room after the game.
So a little bit of a different set of stakes at play for New England.
But like I felt with a young team and Mike in his first year and they, you know,
this will be the first time they touched the grass since they've clinched the division, right?
because they had to wait until Buffalo lost after the week 17 game that New England played to figure out that they won.
It's like, okay, they've achieved a major goal, 13th win, clinced the division, one seed at play, but it kind of feels like the odds are stacked against them.
What kind of focus does New England play with?
And then this drops on top of that.
And it's just made me very interested in the focus of the New England page.
Patriots team and how well they can put together an effort in a game that has meaning for them
for sure, but all their goals are still going to be out in front of them at the end of this game
in either case. Right, right. And you know, Mike Vrable, he's done a fantastic job of keeping
these guys focused. They've pretty much met almost every single challenge. They have not really
had many letdowns. The second half against the bills a couple weeks ago was a big letdown. I thought
they came out somewhat flat against Cincinnati. I thought they came out somewhat flat against
Baltimore after that Buffalo game
on Sunday night. So
other than that, I mean, these guys
have been focused. These guys have come out with the right
intention and the right urgency and energy
and you just kind of wonder. The other question
of course is Drake May and Drake May
is in this battle with Matthew Stafford
over the MVP. Does that stuff matter? Mike
Vrable was asked about it on Wednesday.
Do you kind of keep that in your back your mind
about individual accolades and
you know, if Drake May can throw three touchdowns on Sunday
for example, does that, you know, close
the case for the MVP. And does that matter? Should it matter? So you're kind of going through all
these different kind of feelings and thoughts of, you know, health and, you know, awards and
incentives. And then you've got the two distractions with Stefan Diggs and Christian Barmore.
So it's a little bit chaotic. And it'll be fascinating to see how the guys come out on Sunday
and respond to that chaos. All right. We'll have our marquee matchups next. We continue with this
crossover episode of Lockdown Patriots and Lockdown Dolphins. We are part of the Lock

subscribe to each channel. Markey matchups, Kyle Crabs. What is your marquee matchup number one for this
Sunday? Yeah, I think I'm really interested to see Miami's interior offensive line matchup against
New England, and I know Milton Williams has been designated for a turn, but has missed time.
I know Kairas Tonga's injured, but that was the group that really whipped up Miami the first
time these two teams played in week two, right, where Milton Williams kind of single-handedly
shut down a couple of drives there in the second half of that football game, and he was going
against Keon Smith, who was not the preferred starter, he was a tackle who, they had moonlighting
as a guard in the preseason for some reason, and then James Daniels goes down after three
snaps, and he bringing in Keon Smith, well, lo and behold,
Familiar face for New England fans, it's Cole Strange at right guard instead of Keon Smith now.
And Cole's been, you could tell there's been some struggles with his pro career at Miami.
I do think he's kind of stabilized a little bit, but the ceiling is still very much in question as far as do you bring Cole Strange back?
Do you sign it to be a depth player because there's familiar with the scheme if you bring back Mike McDaniel?
I think you can make a case for they had drafted Liam Eichenberg on the second round.
back in 2021, and he'd become their utility inside player.
But he was on Pup all season long.
He had some kind of mysterious injuries, never to be heard from again.
He re-signed in Miami this offseason missed the entire year.
I think if you told me that you brought back Cole Strange to be that kind of player,
but not a preferred starter, I can, you don't bar with that.
There's positional flexibility there.
There's athleticism to fit within the scheme.
He's gotten 13 or so starts of experience at this point.
I think he set a career high in season snap.
played in a single season.
So it's been a lot of volume for Cole Strange.
And I'm sure he'll be excited to come back to Foxborough and get a chance to play.
I don't think anybody's shaking in their boots, talking about Cole Strange.
But it's not Keon Smith, right?
So that was such a dramatic mismatch in New England's favor the last time that they played,
that I think that's an area, especially with Jonas and I at left guard on the other side.
I say, okay, like, this is a really nice evaluation opportunity for Miami to see,
especially with their rookie, what kind of growth and leap that you can,
if you can feel one from a week two game versus a week 18 game?
I think that's a matchup for me.
I'm very interested in.
I'm interested speaking of former Patriots,
and I'm not sure if you triggered some Patriots fans are not bringing up Cole Strange.
But another guy that I would look at that's a former Patriot is Jack Jones.
And I don't know who the Patriots are going to play at wide receiver.
I don't know how many snaps each person is going to get.
Is Stefan Diggs going to play?
Kisham Booty coming back from that concussion.
He was on the practice field on Wednesday, but of course, you know, you get the non-contact
jersey.
You got to go through each phase.
So will Kisham Booty be out there?
But I couldn't care less.
Whoever is lined up opposite of Jack Jones, I'm challenging Jack Jones.
I am attacking Jack Jones.
I watched last weekend's game and, you know, Jack Jones is inconsistent.
He's undisciplined.
He gambles a lot.
So I would be looking to try to attack Jack Jones.
I actually thought Rosal Douglas played well against Mike Evans.
last weekend in Tampa. So if you're looking at these corners, I'm looking at Jack Jones.
And I just feel like, you know, there's going to be a moment here where he tries to make a play
and he's either going to make that play or he's going to make a huge mistake. And that might happen
on a couple of occasions. So I would be looking to attack Jack Jones in that matchup and trying
to find, you know, Jack Jones in the alignment and seeing if you can, if you can get some people
lined up against him that you can take advantage of. So I think there are going to be opportunities
against him on Sunday.
Your second marquee matchup, Kyle.
Yeah, I think you have to mention Quinn.
You were as a quarterback and what that means for the passing offense.
And not even so much like what does Quinn do from a decision making?
Because I think everybody's expectation is aligned reasonably for a guy who was an accomplished
thrower and he looked really good against Tampa, all things considered after he kind
I got the first big completion under his belt.
But what does the offense afford that's different than what it was with Tua?
Because a lot of the narrative that's been built all season long with Mike on the hot seat
and Tua is struggling the way that he did.
You listen to the insiders, you kind of get a feel for who they've been talking to.
And a lot of the drum beat was Mike's having a hard time running an offense through a guy that
can't get hit and with a skill set that makes you.
drink through a straw, right? Yeah.
You know, if the other stuff around you is not right, you know, it's kind of limiting.
And you've now got this other skill set in Quinn Ewers.
And it's the first time since I think Caroline in 2023 that the dolphins had a 2.10 plus
air yard touchdown passes in the same game.
Quinn Ewers had that against Tampa Bay.
So opening things up.
Can you continue that trend in a road environment?
and think how does Quinn throw the ball in that environment?
Because it's been when teams decide they're going to play the dolphins
and you get out in the cold and his accuracy has gone down in the cold.
He hasn't played in a lot of cold weather games.
So when he gets in the cold,
he kind of feel like the accuracy gets a little more shaky.
And it's like, okay, like can you space the Patriots defense with your passing threats
enough?
And I think sometimes the dolphin scheme kind of hurts them in this regard in its own right
with how they try to scheme open the first primary reed.
but can you create enough spacing that you can't just crowd the line of scrimmage
and play a high pressure, very aggressive style presentation against Miami?
And, you know, will the Patriots test that against a young quarterback on the road
for his first road start?
Can they make enough plays to kind of get in the back off and say,
hey, let's play this status quo instead of feeling like maybe we feel blood in the water?
You know, sticking with the idea of Miami's defense,
I'm looking at Bradley Chubb in the offensive.
tackles for the Patriots. Will Morgan Moses play? He's 34 years old. Will he play on Sunday? How much
will he play? And then you have Will Campbell on the left side. And Will Campbell is coming back
from his injury coming off the IR. He was at practice on Wednesday. It feels like he's likely
going to play on Sunday, but we'll see. And Bradley Chubb, I mean, I was reading this week,
Kyle, that he, Bradley Chubb's playing for like $5 million plus dollars and incentives. So he's
going to be a very motivated guy to be out there. Chop Robinson's dealing with the, you know,
concussion. So who knows what's going to happen with him. And when you look at the
Dolphins pass rush, they're 27th in the league in time the pressure. It just hasn't been there,
Jaylon Phillips gets traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. So if you can handle Bradley Chub,
I feel like you can handle the edges. And so that's going to be, I think, a significant matchup for
the Patriots offensive line this weekend. All right, your final marquee matchup. Yeah, I think I would
probably point to the defensive interior for Miami as the group that's going to need to figure out
how to manufacture the pressure, right?
Because I agree with everything you said about Bradley Chubb.
That whole defense, there's probably five guys that have at least $250,000 in
incentives riding on being in the top 20 in scoring defense and they're 21st by like
three points right now.
They need to be three points better than the Falcons this weekend playing the Saints
defensively to get into the top 20.
So all those guys are going to have some juice.
But Zach Seeler has kind of come to life in the back half of the season looking a little bit
more like the player that they hoped he would be he's playing with three rookies on that
defensive interior alongside him benito jones went on iar so it's him and the rookies and you
could tell the first half the season figuring out how to play games and pick off of each other
and twist and the chemistry wasn't there and it's showed some signs of life but it has to be a
persistent in this game if the dolphins are going to get enough uncomfortable drake may
reps to interrupt his flow and, you know, maybe impact the spacing or some
acuracies to try to manufacture a couple of turnovers.
Yeah, my final marquee match up quick here is the linebackers of the Patriots.
Is Robert Spillane going to be out there?
We'll see it sounds like he shed the boot on Wednesday, but, you know, will he be
able to play?
This Patriots run defense has not been as good without Milton Williams and without
Robert Spillane.
Milton Williams was practicing on Wednesday.
We'll see if he plays.
Again, management like we started the whole podcast today about.
But the linebackers, again, you know, when I'm watching the Miami offense, obviously Mike McDaniel loves running the football, he loves testing the perimeter, he loves his toss and pitch plays.
And I look at Alec Ingold, I look at Julian Hill, trying to get those guys up front, you know, and getting ahead of Devon A. Chan and causing some trouble.
So if you get blocked on the second level, then you've got a danger zone against Devon A. Chan in this Miami run game.
So you've got to make sure that you don't let Alec Ingold and Julian Hill as lead blockers, uh,
kind of disrupt any kind of of momentum you might have in that front seven trying to slow down
a Devon A-chan.
All right, Kyle and I will give you our keys to victory next on today's crossover episode of
Lockdown Patriots and Lockdown Dolphins.

Prize picks.
It's good to be right.
So I think Kyle would agree with me on this, that this is going to be maybe a,
a funky game on Sunday to try to figure out because there's just a lot of unknowns.
And hopefully all of you picked that up in the first two segments.
We've got the injury unknowns.
We've got the playing time unknowns incentives.
We've got maybe a lame duck head coach in Miami trying to keep his job.
A lot of unknowns.
But Kyle, I got to ask you, as we do every week on the crossover, your three keys to victory,
my man.
Yeah, this is kind of feels like a college bowl game and not one of the playoff one, right?
So it's like, who knows?
Like, who knows he's getting off the bus?
who's not, right?
Yep.
I think for Miami,
avoiding putting your defense on short fields,
where that has been when the games against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh
got away from you,
especially the Cincinnati game in week 16.
They're competitive.
They're within three points at halftime.
And then they have turnover, turnover, turnover on downs,
turnover, bad field goal or bad kick coverage that leads to,
five consecutive drives for the Bengals
that started on the plus side of their own 40-yard line
and they went right through.
I would use the analogy that Nick Sabin once said,
but this is a family friendly program.
One of my favorite analogies of all time, by the way.
So they went through it like a tin horn, right?
Straight down on the Dolphins defense.
It's usually snowballed.
If the offense is herky jerky or if they,
they shoot themselves in a foot in the second half,
things usually compound and snowball and get away from the dolphins.
And a lot of their negative game scripts that they've played this season
has been because the defense has breaks trying to make a play
and they feel like they're backed up against the wall
with the offense not doing their part.
And then they're trying to make plays and then are short fields.
So I think that for me is one.
And then inversely, if you can get down it,
the Patriots measure excellent in a lot of metrics.
They don't measure well in red zone defense.
yes and you get in the red zone like get in the red zone and make those opportunities count
teams have done it with new england all season long now they only have 38 or 37 trips
to the red zone all season long so it's not like teams get down there a ton can you get down
there three times and score three touchdowns like if you can then i say okay you gave yourself
a chance to win the game so i think red zone offense for miami field position and not
self-inflicted wounds that are going to um set new england up on short fields
because the defense has a tendency to fold it on itself when you put them in that position
repeatedly.
And then I would say the last one is just your pre-snap operation where Miami's offense under
Mike McDaniel loves three shifts in emotion on 80% of their plays.
Yep.
You got a rookie quarterback in his third start, first time on the road that he's getting a chance
to start.
What's your pre-snap operation and coordination look like to make sure everybody's lined up
where they're supposed to be lined up.
I'm not worried about, you know, Quinn played in Michigan
and out of Alabama and won football games there.
I'm not worried about him with the noise.
Right.
I'm worried about the overall operation of the Dolphins offense on the road
because like two had been in the offense for four years
and we still have guys that are going to the wrong side of the formation.
You're going to pull a guy over here and we're breaking the huddle with four seconds
and we're going to kill the motion.
It's like maybe maybe do less.
And do you do less in this game with Quinn yours?
Does that help you do less?
Like, I'm kind of intrigued to find out.
I'm glad you brought that up because one of my three keys is defensive discipline for the Patriots, right?
As you mentioned, Mike McDaniel loves playing those pre-snap games, tons of motion, misdirection,
different formations.
He will move pockets with Quinn Ewers.
Obviously, he tries to utilize the speed of the team, even with Tyree Kill Gone.
You know, so the Patriots defense has to be disciplined.
They've got to be disciplined.
they can't get fooled by the eye candy.
They can't get out of position and mess things up
and leave wide open running lanes
and leaving open receivers in the secondary.
So just make sure that you're disciplined.
And especially when you tie that together with what we began with,
you know, can you focus on the game with all the distractions?
And this week against this offense,
you've got to be on the same page.
And you've got to make sure that you know exactly what you're looking at
and diagnose it correctly.
So keep up with the defensive discipline from kickoff,
until the very end.
The other thing I would say defensively is perimeter tackling.
I mentioned last segment with you, Kyle.
You know, to me, Miami's bread and butter is when they get that run game going
and they get A. Chan on the second level and they attack the edges.
And Caleb-on-Chayson has had his own issues trying to defend the run this year.
The linebackers without Robert Spillane, you've got to make sure that you got your fits
correct.
And you've got to make sure that, you know, you don't get beat down by Alec Ingold,
or Julian Hill on those lead blocks.
So make sure you swarm to the football and you've got to wrap up.
Devon A. Chan is number one in the entire NFL.
This is to Patriots fans.
I'm sure Dolphins fans know this, but he's number one in the NFL and yards after contact per attempt.
So he's a guy that, you know, he's elusive.
He's tough to get down.
And if he hits that, if he hits that second gear, then you're pretty much dunzo.
And if he runs for a buck 80, even a buck 50, you're in trouble.
So tackle on the perimeter with him, make sure you swarm to the football and wrap him up.
And my final point would be, and this sounds kind of like low-hanging fruit and cliche,
but it's just true, finish strong.
And that's in every category.
Ramandre Stevenson, Trevionn Henderson, when you run the football, finish your runs like you've
been doing the last couple of weeks.
Miami is 26 in the NFL in yards after contact per attempt.
So that tells me they're linebackers and their secondary, not the strongest tacklers out there.
right so you know try to finish those runs strong make a five-yard run into an eight-yard run
winning the trenches Kyle brought it up a couple times you know the interior of the lines in
that battle finish and win in the trenches play with intention and don't turn the football over
you know take care of the ball Miami feasted on Tampa's turnovers last week I thought
Baker Mayfield was awful last Sunday and you just can't turn the football over don't make
it easy. Do not make it easy on a rookie quarterback who's playing on the road for the first time
in his NFL career. And as Kyle said, with a lot going on at the line of scrimmage, most
likely, you know, just play with that intention, play with purpose. Don't turn the ball over and
make it easier for that young quarterback. And so we'll see what happens. Again, it's almost an
impossible game to predict because it's week 18 and there's so much going on. And there's so many
unknowns. But that will wrap up this crossover edition of Lockdown Patriots and Lockedon
Dolphins. Thank you for making us your first listen and for being an Everydayer. Don't forget
