Greetings and Tuesday salutations, Patriots Nation, and thank you for joining me here
once again on the pod.
My name is Mike DeBate, and I cover your New England Patriots for Patriot Maven of Sports
Illustrated.
I am also your host of the Locked On Patriots podcast, which, of course, is a proud part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
And, folks, because it's your team every day, that means your questions, your comments, your feedback are always welcomed and very much encouraged. So share that feedback. Send it to the internet by reaching out to me and following me on Twitter at MDABATENFL.
And while you're out there doing some Tuesday traveling through that Twitterverse, please
be sure to follow the Lockdown Patriots account as well at LO underscore Patriots.
Pats fans, it is day two, final day of joint practices in the city of brotherly love for your New England Patriots.
Pats had a pretty physical practice on Monday, and on Tuesday they once again hit the practice fields for a shorter session, but very intense unorganized team drills.
Solid day of contribution for the quarterbacks, Cam Newton looking solid, taking a good amount of snaps with the starters. Mac Jones struggling a bit early, but rebounding very nicely to end strong,
as the Patriots apparently amp up the intensity in anticipation of Thursday night's game at
Lincoln Financial Field, 7.30 p.m. Eastern, against the Philadelphia Eagles.
And with two days of joint practices now in the books, there's a lot to digest.
A lot of hot takes out there as to who might make the roster, who's on the roster bubble, what can we take away from the Washington win, and what can we look
forward to on Thursday against Philly. All good questions that require some level-headed,
reasonable analysis. Well, lucky for us folks, it is Tuesday, so it is time for a visit from
our resident voice of reason. That means my Patriots Paizan, Steve Balistrieri of Patsfans.com,
joins me here today on the pod,
and we will discuss the Patriots' tight end situation.
On Tuesday, the Patriots had only one dedicated tight end on the field,
and that was Devin Asiasi.
That's right, folks.
Troy Fumagalli, present but not practicing.
And, of course, we know Matt LaCosse out with a possible head injury.
Jonu Smith, Hunter Henry, all nursing injuries.
Dalton Keene, season-ending injured reserve.
All of a sudden, a position of strength is looking a bit thin for the Patriots right now.
What does it all mean for their development?
Well, Steve will give us some level-headed analysis on that as well,
as we also discuss the Philadelphia homecomings of both wide receiver Nelson Aguilar
and defensive back Jalen Mills.
Last but certainly not least, we'll bring it all home with Steve's takeaways
from the win over Washington and what we can expect to see as a result
this coming Thursday when the Pats take on the Eagles in Philly.
Folks, an action-packed agenda, lots to get to today on the show,
so without further ado, after some quick messages of course, I welcome in my Patriots Paisan,
my good friend Steve Balistrieri, as we help to get you prepared for preseason game number
two, Pats Eagles, Thursday night, when this Tuesday episode of the Locked On Patriots
podcast continues.

Pats fans, once again, the march toward preseason game number two continues this Thursday, 730
p.m.
Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Pats Eagles ready to do battle.
And as both teams wrap up day two of joint practices in Philly, we need a little reason
to take us back down to earth.
And luckily for us, that voice of reason is here with us today.
You know his great work from Patsfans.com as well as being the co-host of two amazing podcasts, Patriots 4th and 2, and One Patriots Place.
One of the best guys you'll meet in any walk of life, one of the most knowledgeable football columnists that you can find anywhere in Patriots media,
and as I say each and every week, more
than worthy of the praise he gets and then some.
He is my Patriots Paisan.
Steve Balistrieri joins me here today.
Welcome back to Locked On Patriots, my friend.
Hey, Mike, thanks for inviting me on.
You know I couldn't pass up a chance to talk football with you, regardless of the circumstance.
Absolutely.
Always an opportunity to talk football is a great thing between friends.
And, you know, when you get an opportunity to share the microphone, as we do each and
every week, it always makes it even more special.
It's always one of my favorite times of the week here on Lockdown Patriots.
And with that being said, Bud, there's a lot to talk about.
So we'll dive right into it.
We'll start with what really kind of is the news of the day in New England.
And no, folks, I'm not talking about the quarterback battle.
We all know what's going on there.
The Patriots' tight end position continues to deplete right before our eyes.
And we're recording this at a little afternoon time on Tuesday.
Patriots just walking
off the field along with the Philadelphia Eagles, day two of joint practices. The Patriots only
dressed one fully healthy tight end. I wrote a little bit about this yesterday for Sports
Illustrated and Murph joined me here on Locked On Patriots. And we talked a little bit about this as
well. We expected Devin Asiasi to be out there.
He, of course, returning from a stint on the COVID-19 reserve list.
Devin talking to reporters after practice saying that he's feeling a little bit better,
starting to get his conditioning and his timing back down again.
But he looks to be on the mend.
Troy Fumagalli was present at practice but did not participate.
And, of course, we know Matt Lacoste leaving yesterday with an apparent head injury Hunter Henry John O'Smith continued to nurse
their respective injuries Steve this was supposed to be a positional grouping that was a true
strength for the New England Patriots one of the deeper tight end cores in the league as opposed
to what they had in 2020 which which essentially was just the opposite.
With all of the injuries that you see piling up with the Patriots,
even though none have particularly come down as being overly serious,
are you worried about the development of this group because of all the time being missed by each individual tight end, it seems?
I think you can make that argument.
I mean, you look at this.
I mean, you have a couple of new guys that you paid big money to,
and they're missing some really valuable time.
Overall, I mean, we kind of knew Hunter Henry had a little bit of a reputation,
maybe not quite as well-deserved as being injury-prone, but
you know, the bumps and bruises of training camp, you expect that, but
tight end position seems to have really been hit hard. You know, Henry got his shoulder dinged up.
They say he's back, you know, he's just not fully participating.
Jonu Smith with his ankle. And from what we heard on Monday, you know,
with Matt LaCoste being decleted by Derek Barnett.
So, you know, it's really going to hurt them in the short term.
Long term, I'm not too worried.
I think they'll be fine once the season starts.
But, yeah, there can be something said for missing this valuable time,
especially with new guys, you know,
missing that chemistry time with your two quarterbacks.
Yeah, I agree with you.
My concern is more from missing chemistry, missing practice time,
the ability to find a synergy with each other, and getting used to playing with each other side by side and also developing a relationship with the quarterbacks on the field, whether it be Mac Jones or whether it be Cam Newton or even Brian Hoyer.
You have to develop that relationship in order to be effective right out of the gate.
That, to me, is the more pressing concern.
I've seen some fans, Steve.
You've seen it as well.
A lot of people are going to start to say, oh, well, you know, Hunter Henry is, quote
unquote, made of glass or he's had his injury problems.
Murph and I kind of skirted around this yesterday.
And you mentioned this as well.
I mean, Hunter right now, in terms of the injury that he's nursing, again, not serious.
He has been dressing for practice.
He's been showing up in pads, going through the walkthroughs,
but he hasn't been going through organized team drills.
The team is probably taking a wait-and-see and very cautious approach with him.
I think that's probably the right move in terms of his long-term health.
But, you know, look, I mean, this is not a kid that has, you know, been extremely decimated by injuries the way
that either mainstream social media would have you believe or some members of the fan
base that were not a fan of the signing of Harry would have you believe.
He's actually been on the playing field a lot more than people expect.
During his four years with the Chargers, that doesn't include 2018 because he missed that
with the right ACL tear in his leg. He's played at least 75% of his games. He played in 14 of them in more than
three seasons. From 2016 to 2019, Henry is only one of 11 tight ends to have three seasons with
at least 12 games played and 10 starts in the NFL. For all intents and purposes, this is a position
that does tend to
be a little more injury prone than not based on the role that they play. So in a lot of respects,
I can understand why people are concerned. But when it comes to long-term health, Hunter Henry's
injuries have not been stacked on top of one another. They haven't been things that have,
you know, been recurring. So I don't look at him as saying, oh, well, this is a situation
where he can't rise to the occasion
because of his health.
He'll be just fine.
It's just a matter of getting timing.
So that potent 12-man personnel, folks,
that you want to see
may take a couple of weeks
to get back into the swing of things
as the regular season opens.
And the same can be said for John O. Smith.
He's been very durable.
He's had two MCL problems in 2017 and 2018,
but he's come back from those very nicely
and has shown no ill effects for the last couple of years.
This ankle injury appears to be minor.
He's as tough as they come.
He'll be back out there,
and it's going to be exciting to watch the Patriots
with this 12-man personnel.
And, of course, we hope the best for Matt Lacoste.
Not a whole lot of information on Troy Fumagalli's absence from the field today.
You know, a lot of people were speculating.
Obviously, he was there.
We'll continue to monitor that, folks, in terms of, you know, either injuries or something
else.
But as of the time we're recording this, the Patriots right now were a little bit thin
at tight end. And according to those in
attendance, Devin Asiasi stepping up a little bit today, getting some extra work, Jakob Johnson
taking extra snaps, and even Nikhil Harry being a beast down in the red zone, something that,
you know, we hope that he'll be able to continue to do. Steve, heading down to Philly is always interesting. It's always a happening when it
comes to Patriots and Eagles fans. There's no love lost between these two franchises. There's no love
lost between the fan bases for sure. And there's even a little bit of posturing back and forth in
the media. Some of the Eagles beat writers taunting, I think, the Patriots saying, quote,
unquote, theagles completely dominated the
pats yesterday take a look at the notes folks i think this is a little bit over the top i think
it's a little bit of someone posturing and maybe trying to extend uh you know his name recognition
out there not that he didn't have it to begin with but you know it's always interesting to put
comments out there like this to try to get yourself noticed by another fan base.
And I think he did that nicely. So if that's your motive, go ahead. Fine.
You know, we'll stick to the facts up here in New England.
Bottom line, two former Eagles are looking to make an impact on this game and really look to make an impact on these two joint practices.
Former Eagles wide receiver Nelson Aguilar, who right
now is one of the Patriots' top options at the position, and also defensive back Jalen Mills,
the Green Goblin himself. Mixed reaction the last couple of days for both of these guys. Some
good moments, but some moments where they've either gotten beat or had some difficulty.
What do you look for in terms of these guys on the field on thursday when it
comes to second uh the preseason game uh number two for new england and do you think either one
of them will be factors with the extra motivation of trying to maybe tweak their former team a little
bit i think there's always a little bit of element to that. You know, the players always kind of tend to downplay that stuff.
But, you know, it's there.
I mean, they want to, you know, show their former team that you made a mistake
and let me walk.
So, you know, I think there's always that element a little bit.
It may be not as, you know, pronounced,
but you never, I never discount that.
Now, the other thing, I think Aguilar,
especially since, you know,
you just brought up the injuries to the tight end,
I think he's going to play a big factor
in Thursday night's game
because we saw against Washington,
you know, the Patriots offense without that speed factor,
you know, they were doing a lot of checkdowns. Washington was kind of stacking the box a little
bit. I think Philly's probably going to try to do the same. I think that's where a guy like Aguilar
with that speed element that he brings to the table, I think he's going to be very valuable, not only in this game,
but in the season coming forward. Very good point. Very, very good point, especially when it comes
to Thursday, because Philly is known to have a very stout run defense. We even saw it a little
bit yesterday on the practice field in terms of them being able to shut down some of the good
runners that the Patriots have on this roster. If they're going to move the ball effectively, they're going to have to have a
balance or maybe even lean more heavily on the passing game than the running game in order to
get things going on Thursday. And that's going to mean a heavy dose of Nelson Aguilar. And I think
from what we've seen from him in practice, he's up to the challenge. The hands are always a
question mark. Nelson has had drop issues all his career a lot of people say they continue to plague him i think he got much
better at that last year in las vegas than during his time in philadelphia uh there have been some
issues in camp but for the most part he has been pretty sure-handed and he looks very good on the
opposite end of some of those throws from cam newton even Mac Jones. So I look for Aguilar to have a good game this time around.
And Mills is playing with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder right now.
He's read some of the press about him getting beat,
having some of these prolific receivers,
particularly Terry McLaurin of Washington matching up against him
and saying, oh, well, that's a complete mismatch.
I don't think Jalen liked hearing that too much.
I think he wants to prove that he can cover some of these receivers.
And if we don't see Stephon Gilmore on the field,
which apparently it looks like we won't, that's not breaking news, folks.
That's just he hasn't been removed from PUP yet.
So that's my assumption.
But if that's the case, then Jalen will see time at corner I'm
assuming and I think he's going to be motivated to maybe uh you know stop some of the the yakking
that's going on on the Philly end of things so we'll continue to monitor that but that's good
insight Steve on both former Eagles that have a little something extra to prove folks we're not
done yet here with Steve Balistrieri though, because Steve always offers a level headed take on things.
When our reach seems to go a little bit into the sky or into the clouds too
much,
Steve's going to bring us back down to earth in just a moment and tell us
what he'll have his sharp eye on when the Patriots take the field at Lincoln
financial field on Thursday night and preseason game two against the
Philadelphia Eagles. Steve's thoughts next here on the lockdown Patriots podcast. the field at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday night in preseason game two against the Philadelphia

Pats fan Steve Balistrieri joins me here today on the pod.
Ultimately, this is a team game.
When Bill Belichick addressed the media this morning,
he said this is really about individual performance,
doing what you do well, and focusing on doing it better.
Not worrying about first-team snaps or second-team snaps or anything of that nature.
You want to make sure you're focused on what you're doing well.
When you look at the Patriots' offense as a whole, Steve,
what did you see in the Washington game that you think the Patriots are going to look to improve upon
this week when they take the field against a perhaps underrated Philly defense from top to
bottom? Well, that's a great question because I was just talking with a couple of people about
that yesterday. And, you know, the thing that I want to see when it comes to this game on Thursday
is for them to throw the ball more to their wide receivers than they did on last Thursday.
And I want to see them try to push the ball down the field a little bit.
You know, I know the first game they were interested in protecting the football
and not turning it over, and they did a lot of checkdowns,
both Cam Newton and, you know, Mac Jones.
But on Thursday night, you know,
I want to see the wide receivers get more involved.
Now, you know, there was a lot written about Nikhil Harry
only having one target.
But, you know, Jacoby Myers was only targeted a couple of times.
Kendrick Bourne was only targeted a couple of times.
Other than, you know, Christian Wilkinson.
The wide receivers weren't really targeted that much.
So I really want to see them get these guys involved.
And Nelson Aguilar will play a big role in that I really
would like to see that this week absolutely without any question and I completely agree
with you on that I think that's a good strategy for the Patriots to try to employ this is a good
team to test against a very good team to test against and Bill Belichick alluded to that
earlier today when he spoke with the media.
So we'll continue to see what the Patriots are going to do offensively.
Same deal on the defense, bud.
We saw some exciting moments from the defense last Thursday.
Obviously, Matt Judon coming out, really making an impact right off the bat.
First couple of plays was a very long five minutes when we thought he might have been down or injured.
He came back and by all accounts, he's still looking sharp.
J.C. Jackson looked pretty good in the secondary as well.
Some struggles. We mentioned Jalen Mills earlier.
You know, some of the backups when it comes to the defensive line and when it comes to the linebackers struggled a little in coverage.
But this first team unit looks like it's going to be extremely extremely special
steve is there anybody that you might have your sharp eye on defensively on thursday night when
the patriots take the field uh that might be playing for a little bit more than just a roster
spot or to make a name for themselves they might be playing for a little bit more than that on Thursday.
Who are you going to be watching as the Patriots take the field defensively?
Well, you know, I was really impressed with Matthew Judon.
You know, everything that came out on Thursday's game was totally as advertised.
It was what we were hoping to see when they signed him.
But, you know, the guy that I thought, and he played pretty well on Thursday,
but he's still considered on the bubble is a guy like Deshaun Bauer.
I think this will be a big game for him because he's still fighting for a roster spot.
I still think he's kind of on the outside looking in, but I thought he played pretty well.
And then in the secondary, guys like, you know,
D. Virgin, Miles Bryant, who, you know,
they got picked on just a little bit against Washington.
We'll see if they're able to go and, you know,
get into the game and play a little bit better.
Linebacker, I thought Harvey Lange didn't have a great game on Thursday.
I'm looking for him to make a big bounce back against the Eagles.
Yeah, at this point, I really think he should as well.
I wrote about Harvey over the weekend and just the amazing story of him being able to
come back from the injuries he suffered alongside his wife in the
really very serious car accident during his rookie season. For him to be able to play his way back in
and a meaningful role with the Jets the last couple of years is a remarkable story. He faces
such strong competition at the position. In normal years, you would be saying Harvey Long, he's
definitely a solid depth piece, and there's no way the Patriots leave him on the cutting room floor. But when you look at the
just the sheer volume of depth that the Patriots have at linebacker from top to bottom,
that's a very difficult roster spot to cut. That's the one that's going to keep Bill Belichick up at
night. And I can very easily picture him going right down to the wire,
trying to determine who might be the best fit. I like Harvey. We've covered him. We've seen him in training camp alongside one another. And I'd love to see him be able to step up and have a
better game because when he is in his role, he can play effectively. He's a very good tackler,
although he does tend to miss in the open field. And if he continues that, it's going to be a
little bit of a mark against his name as the Patriots look to fill out this roster. The name
that I'm going to be watching and the guy that I'm going to be watching is Henry Anderson,
someone that you have definitely turned me on to the last few weeks and months and someone that
I'm definitely concerned with, not concerned, but someone I'm definitely looking forward to watching.
He played well into the second half alongside the second unit. I know some people made a little bit
to do with that, but I think in a lot of ways, I think you're seeing guys that are trying to
get used to the Patriots schemes and the Patriots installations, get more playing time in these
preseason games simply because there's
just there's fewer of them there's only three as opposed to four so Henry really kind of alluded
to this a couple of weeks ago when he spoke to the media saying I'm still getting into the point
where I'm starting to recognize plays but I want to get to the point where I can recognize it right
off the bat and I don't have to think about the play they're calling in my head it just comes natural and it's able to flow from me and I don't have to say oh they're running play
x and think about it in his head envision it draw it out and then put it into action on the field
the best way to do that folks is with repetition it's with getting regular reps and regular action
so don't read too much into the fact that Henry Anderson played well into the second
half.
I don't think his roster spot is in jeopardy.
I'm going to be watching him, and I'm looking for a little bit of a bump from him on Thursday
as well.
Steve, what can I say?
First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time out of your schedule, for taking
the time away from.
I'm the blessing, my friend, which really you should be doing, but you're a true pro.
You always come through for Locked On Patriots, and I, for one, could not be prouder to have
you here on the show or to call you a friend.
Before I let you go, my friend, please let everyone know where they can find you, your
great work, and what we can look forward to in the days and the weeks ahead from the great
pen of Steve Balistrieri.
Yeah, well, and again, thanks for having me on.
I look forward to these talks every week.
You know, we're going to be looking at how the roster's playing out.
As always, injuries are going to determine how that 53-man roster,
you know, plays out for the Patriots
starting on week one.
I'll be writing there at patsfans.com, as always,
and we'll be looking at this game and seeing how, you know,
the positions and camp battles are playing out.
This will be a big test for a lot of people.
I think it's going to be a big test for the two quarterbacks this week, and we're going to start seeing that fall into place.
But yeah, we'll be looking at that because all eyes will be pointing toward week one and the
Miami Dolphins. Absolutely, and ultimately, that's the final goal for the New England Patriots in
preseason is to get ready for the home opener and make sure that you're ready for the upcoming 2021 season.
So all the building blocks that we're seeing now, folks, all point toward that goal.
And that's really the one that counts most.
So, Steve, once again, thank you for taking us into the next episode of Locked On Patriots with a level head.
The voice of reason has spoken and we're all better off because of it. We look forward to having you back
here next week, my friend. Talking a little Patriots joint practices with the
New York football giants at that point. But it should be a fun
time and it should be a happening. Until then, stay safe and well.
And we look forward to talking with you again next week. Thanks a ton, bud.
