Starting point is 00:00:00 Now that is more like it. The Pats answer all the questions by going into Buffalo and upsetting the bills as Drake May steps up when his team needed him the most. This is Locked-on Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots. Your daily New England Patriots podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattels. On today's show, Romeo Dobbs and Efton Chisholm came to play as well as some other left over thoughts after a huge win in Buffalo. In the second segment, the defense limited the big plays and did just enough to get the dub. But first, a championship type response from the reigning AFC champions in a hostile environment. Today's episode is brought to by Fandul.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Make this your most rewarding season ever with Fandul Rewards Club. Every week, check the Fandul app to see what's waiting for you. I was totally wrong. I was totally wrong. And I am happily admitting that I was totally wrong. I had the Buffalo Bills winning this game 30 to 20 before they kicked it off. And I will happily take that L all freaking day long. You know, last week during one of the many podcasts I do,
Starting point is 00:01:23 I mentioned that we would find out a lot about this football team on this particular Sunday. We would find out a lot about their fight, the character of this team, the culture that Mike Vrable has worked hard in building. And here we are with a huge upset win over the division rivals Buffalo Bills, 2926, an amazing response from the Patriots, exactly the type of response that you wanted to see. And speaking of responses, I mean, what an unbelievable day from your quarterback. And I posted during this game late in the 4th,
Starting point is 00:02:03 fourth quarter, that Undertaker, if you're a wrestling fan, maybe you're not, I am, the Undertaker Giff where he sits up in the ring and the camera zooms into his face. That was Drake May. That was Drake May in week four of the 2026 season. He sat up like the Undertaker. He heard everything that was said about him, the throwing shoulder questions, the silly relationship question that was thrown out there against the wall between, you know, he and Mike Vrable, which was shot down very quickly.
Starting point is 00:02:32 everybody questioning whether or not Drake May had the medal if he had the fortitude. And he walks into Buffalo and he outgunned Josh Allen in this football game. 22 for 37, 269 yards, not one, not two, but three touchdown passes. He did have the interception and that weird kind of fluky play we'll get into a little bit later. He also had eight carries for 54 yards. The legs of Drake May made a huge impact in this football game. and several big time plays from your quarterback, several plus plays from your quarterback, a game-winning chef's kiss of a drive to wrap things up in Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:03:15 On that game-winning drive, second and 10 from the Buffalo 47, shotgun formation, Efton Chisholm, that deep in breaking route. It's a high throw, but he puts it up there for Chisholm to get and Chisholm with an unbelievable catch. but that wasn't his best catch of the day because then you had a third and five on the Buffalo 23 shotgun formation, two wide receivers, two tight ends, and Efton Chisholm has an unbelievable one-handed catch for a touchdown. That was a great throw off platform by your quarterback. And then the two-point conversion, don't sleep on that. Shotgun formation, three wide receivers may extends the play and finds Ramandre Stevenson for the two-point conversion.
Starting point is 00:04:00 to go up 2926. That wasn't it, though. Plus plays earlier in the game from Drake May. First drive, 97-yard touchdown drive, a thing of beauty, second and eight from your own five-yard line, shotgun formation, three wide receivers. Josh McDaniels actually lines up Reggie Gilliam, your fullback, outside on this play. And May has a scramble for 15 yards. Will Campbell gave up a pressure to Greg Rousseau. The first watch of this game, live, I think Will Campbell had his toughest day of the season so far. We'll have to watch the film and see if I'm right on that. But Rousseau gets the pressure and May kills the bills.
Starting point is 00:04:38 I mean, second and eight, 15-yard scramble, move the chains. Third and 11 from the Buffalo 37-yard line. He hits Smack Hollins in breaking route for eight yards. Follow that up. It's a fourth and three now from the Buffalo 29. Shotgun formation, three wideouts, hits Romeo Dobbs for 15 yards to convert on the fourth down and continue to drive first and 10 from the Buffalo. Buffalo 14, shotgun formation, trips to the right, three wide receivers, Drake made a Romeo Dobbs
Starting point is 00:05:06 for Dobbs's first touchdown on the day. Your quarterback responded. Your quarterback went out there and answered a lot of the questions, right? We can stop talking about the shoulder. Can we please stop talking about the shoulder? How many throws did your quarterback rip today in Buffalo? Plenty of throws. And his legs, again, just doing damage. Looked like 2025. Drake May. extending plays, scrambling. This was precisely what you wanted to see from May. The one big blemish was the fumble, which, by the way, should not have counted
Starting point is 00:05:40 because this officiating crew completely missed the illegal hands to the face on that play. That's a situation where May has to take the sack, right? You've got to take the sack. The pressure is all around you. Don't try to make a play there. Tuck it, go down, take the sack. That was the biggest blemish. outside of that, I thought he was mostly terrific.
Starting point is 00:06:02 We'll have to watch the film to see if he made the right decisions as often as he looked like he made today during this game. But I think you walk away from this win and you feel so much better about Drake May and so much better about this offense after today's game, especially after what you saw last weekend in Jacksonville, which was a disaster class. But May wasn't the only one that responded. Mike Vrable.
Starting point is 00:06:27 Mike Vrable was a huge. response. You know, the guys were ready to play. A great start. The defense goes out there. Buffalo, right? Buffalo wins the toss. They decide to actually receive the kick instead of deferring. Interesting decision. They want to go on a fast start here with Josh Allen. They go out there. Your defense forces a three and out. Fantastic pass breakup by Craig Woodson. And it was really poetic because the game starts on that three and out with the PBU from Woodson and the game pretty much for Buffalo on the Woodson interception from Josh Allen late in the fourth quarter. But you have a great start.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Your defense goes out there. They get a three and out. And then your offense marches down the field, 97 freaking yards for a touchdown drive. That's exactly the type of start you want from the Patriots after what we saw last week. And I thought the energy was there. The energy was there from second one to the final second of this game. I thought the defense played with that customary violence. that Drake May, not Drake May. Mike Vrable wants to see from his team,
Starting point is 00:07:32 and I'm sure Drake May also wants to see his defense play violent. The team played with confidence. They had that confidence all day long. They did not look like a team that walked in defeated. They did not look like a team that had that awful game in the back of their mind from Jacksonville. They moved on. That is a mature professional response from this team. They moved on from a disgusting game last week.
Starting point is 00:07:58 And as we said, take the film and burn it. Take the tapes and burn them. I know they don't watch them on tapes anymore. Everything is digital, Nick. I get it. But you understand what I'm saying. That's the type of game where you just flush. And the Patriots flushed it.
Starting point is 00:08:12 They flushed it. They traveled the Buffalo. Buffalo's 3 and O feeling great about themselves. All the questions about the Pats. They walk in. They take care of business. And here's something. Here's how you can flip the script.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Are you ready? The Patriots are a fourth quarter implosion in Seattle week one. They are a fourth quarter implosion away from being three and one on the season. When this guy, this schmuck, said they were going to be one and three at the end of the first month, whoops, they're now two and two. And there is such a significant difference after winning this game, this type of game, where you won the game, there is such a significant difference from two and two.
Starting point is 00:08:58 and one and three because now you're walking into the part of the schedule that is absolutely softer than the first month has presented. Can't say enough about this win. I want your comments. Don't forget to like, click that thumbs up. Throw some comments in. I see comments being thrown in there. I will get to some of your comments.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Don't forget to subscribe as well. Coming up, the defense checked off enough key boxes to help their team win a big one. Starting point is 00:11:44 Thank you for making us your first listen, and for being an everydayer. We'll get to the Patriots defense in a minute or two, but first I want to get to some of your comments. Joe Oliveira checks it and says, Nick, it could feel good when a person picks the wrong team to win. Yeah, again, I will happily take it. take the L. I had the Patriots losing 30 to 20 in this game. I was wrong. Patriots win.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Just a huge victory against a division rival, a division rival that was 3 and O walking in, feeling very good about themselves. So yeah, I was wrong and I am happy to be wrong. I'm not going to sit here and be upset that I predicted a loss and they win. I'm not going to be upset by that. Corey D. Drake so needed this. Yeah, it felt like it, right, Corey? It felt like that type of day that Drake needed. I thought he was mostly terrific. Again, that's the first watch. We'll see what the film tells us,
Starting point is 00:12:37 but I thought he was mostly terrific. Linder says, glad they proved most of us wrong. Yeah, you know, and this is why I said, you go back to last week, and there were so many people writing this team off
Starting point is 00:12:47 and writing this season off. And I said, even if they do lose in Buffalo and they start one and three on the season, you don't need to write them off. Let's not go crazy. But in 2026, with social media, people lose their ever-loving mind.
Starting point is 00:13:00 faster than they ever have before. And you have people saying, get rid of Josh McDaniels, Drake Mae stinks, Mike Vrable is not good. I mean, I saw everything in the replies this past week. And you can't judge a team by their worst game of the season. And that's what it was last week against Jacksonville.
Starting point is 00:13:18 You can't judge them off their worst game. And you really can't judge them off their best game. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Calm down zombies. I went in hoping to see this team take some steps forward. He came out pleasantly surprised with the win. that game was much more enjoyable to watch than previous weeks. Oh, no doubt about it.
Starting point is 00:13:33 I mean, going from last week's game to this week's game, such a difference. Charles Dyer, this game was a good example of why I don't bet on games. Yeah, you never know. And that's why we say the NFL is a week to week proposition, right? You just never know. You never know. All right, the Patriots defense, they weren't perfect, especially in the second half. I thought their run defense got a little bit leaky late in the third quarter,
Starting point is 00:13:57 early fourth quarter, right? They gave up some runs to James Cook, but they did check a lot of boxes. I mean, limiting James Cook, the way they did until late third quarter, early fourth quarter, says a whole lot about this defense. I mean, they got chewed up and spit out against Jacksonville. The Jaguars ran the football down their throat. They were physically dominated in Jacksonville. And boy, did they respond up front today for the most part.
Starting point is 00:14:25 I mean, they went out there and they were. were highly competitive against a rushing offense that I called before this game, the best rushing offense in football. And I honestly believe that. That's how good the bills have been running the football. And the Patriots defensive front, their front seven did a really good job for almost the entirety of the first three quarters of this football game. They did not allow James Cook to bounce it outside until late when he got, I think it was that 17 yard run when he bounced it out. Charles Woods got sucked inside, bad job by him. But for the most part, I mean, you go into this type of game and you give that type of
Starting point is 00:15:01 defensive effort against James Cook. I think that's mission accomplished. I mean, the bills had like 30 rushing yards until midway into the third quarter, if not later than that. So their run offense was not existent for the first two and a half quarters. And that also includes Josh Allen. You know, we talk about Cook. We talk about the traditional run game and the big personnel.
Starting point is 00:15:22 And I did not think. I did not think that the bills played as much big personnel as I expected them to. I thought we'd see more three tight end sets. They played a lot to my eyes in real time. They played a lot of three wide receiver sets, a lot of 11 personnel from Joe Brady in his offense today. That surprised me a little bit. I thought they might play big boy football. They got to that in the fourth quarter and got some runs. I'm just not sure why they did not try that more often to start this game after what you saw against Jacksonville.
Starting point is 00:15:52 that's not my job. I don't break down the Buffalo Bills coaching decisions. I'm the Lockdown Patriots host. And the Patriots Front 7, I thought, did a really good job for the first two and a half quarters, including against Josh Allen. Because again, when you're playing against Alan and his legs, it's a lot like Drake May. You have to be disciplined. You've got to be responsible.
Starting point is 00:16:13 And Ross Tucker said it late in the game. He said, I can't remember the first time. Like, this might be the first time that I see Josh Allen not. making a huge impact running with the football. And he's right. I can't remember the last time I saw Alan not make a big difference with his legs. And he did not. I mean, he made that one play for the 50-yard chunk play to Khalil Shakir. That was a really nice extension play with his legs. But usually Josh Allen will rip you to shreds by scrambling. May did that to Buffalo's defense today. Alan did not do that to the Patriots defense. Josh Allen finished.
Starting point is 00:16:52 with five carries and four yards today. That is an excellent job by the defense remaining discipline. I thought Zach Corr had a pretty interesting plan today. They played a decent amount of zone coverage, which you would kind of expect without Christian Gonzalez. Oh, yeah, and by the way, the Patriots won this game without Christian Gonzalez and without Christian Barmore. But I thought Zach Corp, you know, a lot in this game,
Starting point is 00:17:16 especially through the first two quarters, two and a half quarters, the Patriots were bluffing the blitz, an awful lot. They were showing blitz and then backing out of it. And I thought that impacted the Bill's offense. And I said this last week, and I'll keep saying this, Josh Allen's a great quarterback. And many will tell you he's the best quarterback in football. And that's tough to argue when he's on a heater, when he's got it going. However, Josh Allen remains a quarterback that will give the defense a shot. And he did it twice today. He got away with it once. That weird from inside the end zone pass when he's not looking, that's as bad of a play as you will see from any
Starting point is 00:17:57 quarterback at any level of football. He is so lucky that that was not a pick six for the Patriots. And by the way, I think he's lucky that they did not call that grounding. He got away with that one. And then late in the game, he pushes his luck. He goes deep to Keon Coleman and there's Craig Woodson with that interception. That was a terrible decision and a terrible throw from Allen. He will give the defense an opportunity to make a big play. And that's what happened late in the game. Just careless by Josh Allen. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe as you watch.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Appreciate every single one of you. What a huge win we're talking about here. Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills 29, 26 in Buffalo. The Pats improved to two and two on the season. Something else the Patriots defense did today. They completely shut down the tight ends. and that was surprising to me. Dawson Knox, Dalton Kincaid.
Starting point is 00:18:52 I had some big concerns about the Patriots' ability to defend the tight ends. And they were terrific. I mean, Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid combined for only three catches and 20 yards. Kincaid had one catch for seven yards, and that came very late in the fourth quarter. The tight ends were MIA for the bills. So props to the Patriots who had a terrific plan, did a really good job, against the tight ends. The bills were also two for four in the red zone. Now, one of those possessions was after that fluky interception by May, which was a field goal right off the bat, right? They
Starting point is 00:19:28 returned it and then they just kicked the field goal to go into the half. But the Patriots defense also had a big fourth quarter stop. The third series, the third defensive series in the second half for the defense. The bills have a first and 10 from the Patriots 20. Ty Johnson runs for three yards. Then there was a second and seven on the Patriots 17. That was the Josh Allen keeper play, the quarterback run, the designed run. And you look at it and there's Alan with a three yard loss. Patriots did an awesome job on the edge to contain Allen. He had nowhere to go. He just gave up. He waved the white flag right away because Joe Brady thought he had the Patriots in a certain look and they were going to take advantage of it and they did not. So on that second and seven,
Starting point is 00:20:13 and you get a three-yard loss on the Josh Allen keeper. By the way, the bills got away with the Dalton Kincaid hold on that play. And then third and 10 from the Patriots 20, Allen has to take a checkdown, and it's a good blitz call from Zach Corr, and Marcus Jones makes that terrific tackle in the open field for no gain. So the bills are looking at a first and 10 from the Patriots 20, and they run two plays.
Starting point is 00:20:41 they run three plays and they get a total of zero yards. They picked up three on the first down, then they lose three, and then no gain because of that fantastic tackle by Marcus Jones. That's a big defensive stand. That is a huge defensive stand. The bills end up with a 38-yard field goal. The Patriots, they stayed on top 21 to 20 because of that red zone stop. So vital, vital stop by the Patriots defense there.
Starting point is 00:21:11 All right, a few leftover notes. After a big time win coming up next, this is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Starting point is 00:23:42 It's okay to ask what's wrong after a game like that. I only saw a large media who doesn't really want games to talk about benching Drake, and they do that for the clicks. Yeah, the benching Drake stuff was silly. The benching, the benching him stuff was silly. So it's just ridiculous. It's not going to happen. It's just not going to happen.
Starting point is 00:24:00 Manolo, son, Chisholm should be starting in the slot once A.J. Brown comes back. We'll see what happens with Chisholm. Obviously, he was given an opportunity today, and he took full advantage of that opportunity. I mean, you want to talk about some great catches. That touchdown catch is as good as it's going to get from really any receiver in the NFL. All right, let's talk about some other notes about this game. I thought the Patriots smartly were aggressive all day long. Going forward on fourth down multiple times, throwing it not once but twice on that final possession
Starting point is 00:24:34 with the play action rollouts. And the second pass ends up sealing the game with the Hunter Henry catch for 12 yards. that's what you've got to do against Buffalo. Buffalo's going to be aggressive. Josh Allen's going to put points up on the board. You can't tuck your tail against those guys. And so I absolutely love the Patriots going for it multiple times on fourth down. I loved throwing it twice on that final possession.
Starting point is 00:24:58 That's exactly what you should be doing against that football team. Some big injuries. Mack Hollins. Look, we'll see what the Patriots have to say about Mack Hollins. I didn't see much said. in the post game. Obviously, I'm going live, so maybe more was said in the post game than I saw. But looking at the replay, that looked like a non-contact injury for Matt Collins. Now, the Patriots said it was a calf. We'll see. I don't like. I do not like seeing non-contact
Starting point is 00:25:35 injuries to the back of the leg like that. And we know Matt Collins is. is trusted by May. Drake May will throw it to Mack Hollins pretty much at any point in any game. If it's a third down, a fourth down, how many big plays has Hollins made for this team on third down and even some on fourth down? So we'll have to keep an eye on Mack Hollins and his status.
Starting point is 00:26:00 AJ Brown and Hollins, I think, will both be out next week. So we know AJ Brown's out. If Hollins is out too, Hey man, Romeo Dobbs, big time day to day. Fantastic to see Romeo Dobbs do what he did today. He had a one-armed catch on that fade route, just a tremendous catch. He had the, you know, he had the big time toe swag there near the sidelines a couple of times on some big catches.
Starting point is 00:26:27 He had a fourth down conversion. I think he might have had two fourth down conversions. So Romeo Dobbs, Efton Chisholm, they've got to get going. I do not expect Kyle Williams to do much. I mean, Kyle Williams has had the opportunity. the last few weeks, and he's just not doing much of anything. So Dobbs, Douglas, Chisholm, it's going to be rough if both Brown and Hollins are out next week. And again, Brown is definitely out.
Starting point is 00:26:52 But if Hollins is also out, May's going to have to find a way with those other guys. He did a great job of that today, obviously, right? Did a great job in the second half without Hollins, without Brown. Dobbs showing up big, Chisham showing up big. You'll need more of that from those two guys. and you'll need your tight ends to also make some plays. Hunter Henry made a couple of plays. Eli Raarden had a catch today.
Starting point is 00:27:14 You've got to have everybody kind of chip in here. The run game today wasn't bad in the first half. It got very quiet later in the game. And at the end of the day, just not enough from this run game again, 27 carries, 89 yards from your running backs. That's 3.3 yards of carry. I thought early in this game, in the first half, especially with six offensive linemen,
Starting point is 00:27:35 the Patriots were moving people early in this game. And I thought the Patriots on the majority of the snaps, not every single snap, of course, but the majority of the snaps, I thought the Patriots offensive line was winning the line of scrimmage. In the second half, they had a lot less success. Josh McDaniels, a lot of people criticizing McDaniels. I thought he changed some things up. Multiple snaps today with two running backs. Two or three perimeter runs that we saw.
Starting point is 00:28:00 Six offensive linemen a decent amount today. That was hit and miss. Early in the game, you had the whole two running backs, two tight ends. play action shovel pass to Hunter Henry for eight yards after a reverse play to Trayvion Henderson. So I thought McDaniels dug a little deeper in the back today against this Buffalo defense. Again, Dobbs, what can you say? Six catches, 58 yards, two touchdowns, obviously was not a flawless day. You had that interception. Look, that's not a great ball from Drake May. May said in the post game, that was on him. That's a tough catch to make because Dobbs is thinking
Starting point is 00:28:35 it's going to be up here and that pass is going to kind of lead him in, but instead it's low. And similar kind of vibes to the play that AJ Brown got hurt on, right, with that high ankle sprain. So not the best ball from May, but still, Dobbs, you got your hands on it. You got to make that catch. Freak pops up, ends up being an interception. I also thought the deep ball in the fourth quarter, that was a fantastic throw by May. Again, tough catch, but Dobbs, you got both hands on it. that's a play that I know that Dobbs will say he has to make. But overall, a big time step forward for Romeo Dobbs.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Gabe Accus, I thought, gave Dion Dawkins some fits, which says a lot. Dion Dawkins, one of the best left tackles in football. There was that one rep where Accus just bulldozed Dion Dawkins, which resulted in that weird Drake May, not Drake May, Josh Allen. I'm going to throw it behind, not even looking what's going on. That was because of Gabe Accus with a bull rush on Dionne Dawkins. Elijah Ponder, again, made a few splash plays in this game. I thought the front seven did the job for most of the day.
Starting point is 00:29:38 They got some pressure. They did a good job against the run game. Again, late third quarter, into the fourth got a little leaky, but overall, pretty good. The Patriots offense finished with 405 total yards. Most importantly, they were three for three in the red zone. So they got into the red zone and they finished drives. I've been screaming from the mountaintop that this offense has. to finish drives.
Starting point is 00:30:03 They were three for three in the red zone today. Still only five for 12 on third down need to be better there. Also six penalties need to be better there. I did hate the holding call on Marcus Jones. I thought that was a joke. I hated the penalty flag thrown on Mike Vrable even more. I thought the officiating crew blew the call on Marcus Jones and then doubled down by being very sensitive
Starting point is 00:30:26 and threw a flag on a head coach because he dropped an F bomb. F bombs get dropped. a million times every Sunday. I thought that was soft on the crew, and I thought that crew, both sides, I thought they stunk. I thought that officiated crew stunk out loud today. But what a win.
