Starting point is 00:00:00 Mike Vrable. Mike Frable gets his revenge down in Tennessee as the Pats dominate the Titans. It's a live post game. This is Lockdown Patriots. I am your host, Nick Cattles, born and raised in New England. been covering the Patriots for the past 16 years in my goodness.
Starting point is 00:00:33 I have never seen a Patriots team win three straight road games in a regular season in my life, let alone during the time I've been covering this team. I have never seen it. You want to know why? Because it's never happened. On today's post game, the Patriots keep passing tests week in and week out. Also, Drake May continues to operate at a near elite level. But first, the defense, they flip the switch.
Starting point is 00:01:02 We appreciate you joining the show, making us your first listen. And for being an every day or the Lockdown Patriots podcast is a proud partner of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Starting point is 00:01:43 I'm going to get into Drake May. We're going to talk all about Drake May. I've got some astounding numbers for you regarding what May did today and what we've seen from Drake May now through seven weeks in the 2025 season. We are going to get to Drake May. However, I want to start with the defense. The Jekyll and high defense continues for the Patriots. It was another rough start. I'm tweeting at Nixie Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Here we go again. A terrible start by this defense. Rinse and repeat every single week. The Tennessee Titans come out. They score 10 points on their first two drives. You had a 20-yard gain. You had an 18-yard gain. And you had the 38-yard touchdown.
Starting point is 00:02:27 throw by Cam Ward. That's not what you want to see to start out a game. And it feels like every week, this defense, for whatever reason, starts off slow. They didn't get much pressure in that first half, at least through the first quarter and a half. They didn't get much pressure. Their man coverage was getting beat. Marcus Jones got beat on the touchdown. And, you know, you look at the Christian Gonzalez versus Van Jefferson play on third down.
Starting point is 00:02:57 when Van Jefferson beats Christian Gonzalez man coverage for 15 yards on a third and three. And you're just looking at this game and you're wondering, are we going to have this happen again? Are we going to have another slow start for this defense to flip a switch at halftime and look completely different in the second half? Because you usually don't see defenses that consistently do that. You'll see it every once in a while. You're looking at Marcus Jones, who's been one of the best players on this team this year, getting beat early in this game for that touchdown with Craig Woodson also spinning around like a top in the secondary on the back end at safety and you see your best
Starting point is 00:03:36 cornerback and Christian Gonzalez get beat by at best a 2B receiver in Van Jefferson on a third down and you're just wondering is this the game is this the game that the defense plays like this not only in the first half not only in the first couple of quarters the first two and a half quarters but is this the game where the defense just doesn't step up and we have a close game that shouldn't be close until the end of the fourth quarter because they just can't figure things out. Cam Ward, Cam Ward in those first two drives, he was six for seven, 101 yards, a touchdown. His passer rating was 158.3. It's absurd. Cam Ward was on fire to start this game. But then, but then the Patriots defense and Zach Corr and Mike Vrable,
Starting point is 00:04:27 They flipped the switch. Starting on the last drive for the Titans in that second quarter, it was domination from that Patriots defense. Absolute domination from the tail end of the second quarter through the end of this football game. Started with the three and out. You had the three and out. And then you had a scoop and score from K. Levin Chase on. I don't know what happened to Cam Ward on that play.
Starting point is 00:04:56 He just fumbled the first fumbled. football, but it was a great pressure by Kalevon Chase on. Tennessee, for some reason, they try to block Kalevon Chase on with a wide receiver. That didn't work out. Spoiler alert. Chaseon beats him. Gets to Cam Ward. Cam Ward's backpedaling, fumbles the football. Kalovan Chaseon picks up the fumble, scoop and score. And that's when you felt like this game was over. I had questioned whether or not Tennessee, if the Patriots could play some consistent defense. I questioned on Friday during the preview show. If the Titans were going to be able to score enough points. That was always my question about this football game.
Starting point is 00:05:31 And the answer was no. Because after that fast start, after the first couple drives, after scoring 13 points in the first half, they could not do anything against the Patriots defense in the second half. So you had a three and out. You had the scoop and score. You had four plays that resulted in a punt. In Tennessee, could not score. The Patriots defense shut them down. And I really think it began up front, which is not a surprise. The Patriots defensive line has been the most consistent part of this defense from day one. The Patriots defensive line continues to win. They might not win every week early.
Starting point is 00:06:07 They might not win for all four quarters, but they're going to win the matchup. And we saw that again against the Titans. The defensive line won the matchup. And what you saw in that second half was pressure. Pressure from the Patriots front. Kalevon Chase on. was a beast. He had a fantastic game. He was a nightmare up front for the Tennessee offensive line. He had a couple of sacks. He had that scoop and score. He had another one
Starting point is 00:06:34 or two impact plays in this game. So Caleb on Chase on played well. Harold Landry had a sack. Thanks in part to Christian Barmore. They ran a stunt and Barmore kind of drew the attention and Landry looped all the way around and had that sack on Cam Ward in the second half, but you had plays from Calamon Chase on, Harold Landry, Milton Williams. Milton Williams had a sack in the second half, a dominant rep, and you had Christian Barmore, again, being a headache. That's the heart of this defense. I thought, I thought the secondary, especially at cornerback with Carlton Davis and Christian Gonzalez and Marcus Jones, were going to be the heart of this defense, or at least play as well as the front. And it really hasn't been the case, not to say that
Starting point is 00:07:19 the defensive backs have been terrible. They haven't. Christian Gonzalez has been okay, if not good. Carlton Davis has been up and down. I think Marcus Jones, until giving up that touchdown today, has been terrific. But this defensive frontman, it is very tough for any offensive line to get footing against them. They will constantly, constantly attack and play violent football. And in the second half, what did you see?
Starting point is 00:07:43 In the second half, you saw a Tennessee Titans offense that could not create any explosive plays. In the first half, Tennessee, they had some success with play action. They had success with play action to the middle of the football field in the passing game. And that did not happen in the second half. The second half, the Patriots shut that down. No explosive plays from Tennessee. Cam Ward was a little bit shaky in the pocket. They got that pressure consistently in the second half. And it was a different football game. And they created turnovers. You had the Caleb on Chase on scoop and score. Marcus Jones, late in the fourth quarter, comes up with the interception off the deflection.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Cam Ward throws it behind the intended receiver and it deflects right into the hands. Nice little diving play by Marcus Jones. He comes up with the pick. So creating turnovers. And once again, the one thing about this defense that has been consistent from beginning to end, you can't run against this team. The Patriots run defense is unreal at this point. And they've played some pretty good run offenses.
Starting point is 00:08:42 Don't get it twisted. Carolina can run the football. Rico Dado can run the football. Buffalo can run the football, but this Patriots defense, they've been Jekyll and Hyde in the secondary, they've been Jekyll and Hyde at linebacker, but they have been able to dominate no matter who's trying to run the football. And that was again the case today against Tennessee. They shut down that run game.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Taylor Kyle's from CL&S posted the run defense for the Patriots officially has not allowed a single explosive since week four. They're not giving up 10-yard runs. giving up any explosive plays in the run game. They are shutting run game down and they are forcing every team that they play against to be one dimensional. Now, why is the difference? I don't know. Mike Vrable in the post game again said, we've got to start faster. We want to start faster. Why does the defense need three or four drives to get going? I have no clue. But the most important thing is they get it going. Another team held under 20 points, which has been the calling card for this
Starting point is 00:09:46 defense. It might look rocky at the beginning, but they settle down. They make some adjustments. They get out in the second half, and they end up looking like a totally different defense, and they make it hard on offenses. And that was the case again in Tennessee in that second half. So Jekyll and Hyde, but certainly good enough, only giving up 13 points, getting sacks, getting pressure, creating turnovers. So overall, good day for the defense if you just forget about the first few drives, which I feel like maybe we should just do anyway. Maybe we should just do that every week and expect this Patriots defense to give up some points the first couple of drives. And then we start grading them on what they do
Starting point is 00:10:30 about middle of the second quarter. Maybe that's the best way how to do this. But they figured it out again. And they were excellent in the second half. Speaking of doing it again, Drake May does it again. We will break down his performance next. We have some unbelievable numbers about the second year quarterback. Like, comment, and subscribe. as we move along with this live post game on YouTube, lockdown Patriots, Nick Cattles with you discussing the fourth straight win by the Patriots, the third straight win on the road. And let's get to Drake May. What can you say?
Starting point is 00:13:24 What can you even say? I feel like we are running out of adjectives. We are running out of great things to say about Drake May. There's only so many ways you can describe what he's been doing for this football team. He has been un-freaking believable. In the first half, down in Tennessee, Drake May completed 10 of his 11 passes, had 110 yards with two touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:13:52 And this wasn't dink dunk. This wasn't easy, peasy, wide-open receivers that he was throwing to. Every single time he dropped back. Let's go through some of those throws in the first half. How about the Kishon booty throw? not the one you're probably thinking of immediately. We'll get to that in a minute. But what about the Kishon Booty throw towards the boundary,
Starting point is 00:14:14 left side of the football field? Drake May getting heavy pressure. Somehow, he gets that football out to Kishan Booty completes the pass. Great play by Drake May. How about the Mack Hollins throw? The Honeyhole again, down the right sideline, down the boundary, puts it right over, right over the defensive back, right in front of the other defensive back, fits it right in perfectly to Mack Hollins.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Hollins keeps his feet, chunk gain, move it down into the red zone. Get inside the 10-yard line. That was a great throw. And then you had the Kashan Booty touchdown, 39-yard touchdown throw from Drake May, which I believe it traveled in the air about 56, 57 yards. I saw somebody tweet that. But Drake May finding Kashan Booty over the top for the touchdown. We discussed this on Friday's preview.
Starting point is 00:15:07 It's why you should check out the preview every single week. You should check out the show every day. But of course, I'm biased because I host the show. But we talked about it on the preview show on Friday. And if you caught it over the weekend, Tennessee Titans defense was one of the worst defenses against deep passes EPA per pass in the NFL. They were the eighth worst defense EPA per pass on deep throws, which are throws in the air for 20 plus yards. Drake May walked into this football game today as the best deep thrower in the NFL. And we mentioned it on Friday.
Starting point is 00:15:42 And I mentioned Kishon Booty could get loose and make a big player or two. And that's precisely what happened. He gets loose towards the end of the first half and comes down with that touchdown catch. And shout out to Josh McDaniels. And shout out to Drake May and shout out to Mike Vrable because the Patriots who had all of their timeouts left, they could have been conservative. They could have been conservative at the end of the first half. But you know what they did?
Starting point is 00:16:05 They trusted their quarterback, and they let him air it out. They took a shot down field, and it paid off. Great throw. Fantastic catch. Kishan Booty with the fingertips, the back of the football, Charles Davis, and Jason McCordy talked about it in the booth. When the TV crew came back at the end of halftime, it was a tremendous catch by Kishan Booty,
Starting point is 00:16:27 who once again makes a couple of big plays for his quarterback. In this game, Drake May had. Two incompletions. That's it. Two incompletions. He had as many incompletions as he had touchdown throws. That's insane. He was 21 of 23, 222 yards and two touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:16:49 By the way, one of his two incompletions was a blown-up screen, so it wasn't even really on Drake. And Pat's communications, the team's communications department, they posted that Drake, set a franchise record for the highest completion percentage in a single game with a minimum of 20 pass attempts with a 91.3 completion percentage. The previous record, if you were wondering, was held by you know who Tom Brady, who had an 88.5% completion percentage versus Jacksonville in December of 2009. So what you witnessed today was once again history from Drake May. Second year quarterback, he has started what, all of 18, 19 games at the NFL level. And here he is setting another franchise record, highest completion percentage in a single game with a minimum of 20 pass
Starting point is 00:17:39 attempts. And everybody was concerned about his accuracy coming out of UNC. Was he going to be able to be accurate? Would he be able to quickly be accurate? Would it take him a few years? He's just killing defenses. He's killing defenses every week. His decision making is sharp. Again, did you see a play? Did you see a throw today? That was a harmful throw. Did you see a throw from Drake May that made you worried. Did you see a throw from the quarterback that you scratched your head and said, oh, that was a dangerous play. That was a dangerous decision. I don't remember one. Maybe there was one, but I don't remember one. So it's not just a production. It's not just the stats that Drake May continues to compile on a weekly basis. It's the decision making.
Starting point is 00:18:25 He's not putting the football in harm's way. These are not all easy throws. I mentioned a few of them just a few moments ago. What about the Stefan Diggs throw? That ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous touch throw, left sideline boundary, perfect touch, perfect touch over the top that Stefan Diggs. Stefan Diggs, late hands, suction cup, brings it down, nice play. That touch throw is absurd. And if you're a defense and you're worried about Drake May carving you up with his arm. Then he starts to carve you up with his legs. He had a bunch of rushing yards in the first half. As soon as you play man coverage, if nobody gets open, he's going to scramble and pick up eight to ten yards. He finished on the day with 62 yards rushing.
Starting point is 00:19:17 So he had over 280 total yards to go along with two touchdowns. And again, another game with zero turnovers. I will just say keep sliding, Drake. Drake May needs to keep sliding. He took that hit today, back of the head against the turf, checked again for a concussion. That's the one thing with Drake May. We've got to keep watching. When he runs, he's got to make sure he gets down consistently.
Starting point is 00:19:46 There were a few times today where he took a couple hits. There was that play he had to leave the game. And there were a couple times where he put the ball on the turf, but he was able to gobble it right back up. but he's going to keep sliding and make sure he continues to take care of the football when he's a runner. And you want to talk about adversity, he continues to get through adversity. He continues to just battle. I did not think Drake May was awesome in the first quarter.
Starting point is 00:20:13 I didn't think the first couple of drives, he looked comfortable. He looked a little shaky. Tennessee was getting pressure. But inevitably, Drake May started to look like Drake May and what we've seen for the past several weeks now. he settled in he responded he showed resiliency he continues to play like a top six quarterback Jake andrade from NFL research posted Drake May is the fourth NFL player in the Super Bowl era with two plus passing touchdowns two or fewer incompletions and 60 plus rushing yards in a single game the other people who have done that Lamar Jackson in
Starting point is 00:20:55 2019 at Cincinnati, Robert Griffin the 3rd in 2012 against Philly, and Walter Payton, of all people, in 1983 at New Orleans. Drake May is doing things that we haven't seen quarterbacks and that we haven't seen players doing an awful lot of in the NFL. If you wanted a leap in the second year, if you wanted him to continue to get better, if you wanted him to show you that he's a franchise quarterback, I don't know what you need anymore because this guy has been absolutely bawling for weeks. Another note from the Pat's communications team, by the way, Drake May has tied Tom Brady from 2007 for the most games in team history of at least
Starting point is 00:21:37 200 passing yards, a 135 passer rating, and two passing touchdowns in a season with four. And guess what? It's week seven. He just finished week seven. And he's already done that. four times. Man, oh man.
Starting point is 00:21:58 I don't know how you can't be absolutely ecstatic about Drake May and what he's doing, the way he's playing football. He is on a heater. And the level of difficulty of some of these throws, the level of difficulty of some of these plays through the roof. It's been unreal. All right. The Pat's character continues to win and show something.
Starting point is 00:22:19 What is that something? Find out next as we continue with today's episode of Lockdown, Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Let's talk about Mazda. Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move. Mazda delivers confidence with every ride with more I-IHS top safety pick plus awards than anyone else. From footwork to breathwork, athletes sweat all the details. Mazda brings this same intention to how they craft every single model.
Starting point is 00:22:49 Stunning detail that brings you back to the winning days. closer, the good times. You can feel Japanese craftsmanship in every detail from the metallic accents to available Napa leather upholstery. You can make everyday drives feel like anything but from smooth handling to intuitive controls. And here's something that's really cool.
Starting point is 00:23:08 All-wheel drive standard in every crossover SUV so you can drive with confidence through almost any season. And of course, we know how important that is up in the Northeast. Like our players, Mazda sweats every detail because when you make every move count impossible, it becomes
Starting point is 00:23:23 irrelevant. Mazda, move, and B-Moo. The NFL season is here and Fandul has an offer that you don't want to miss. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $300 in bonus bets if you win. Pick a bet, put down the five bucks. It even followed the live lines during games, which is a lot of fun. It makes watching football even more exciting when you've got a little something riding on the action. Whether you're a casual fan or love diving into the stats like I do, Fanduil makes the game day experience so much better. So again, right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $300 in bonus bets if you win.

Visit fandul.com to download the Fandul app today. get started. There might be, and I'm not sure, but there might be some people in the Boston media who are going to tell you that the Patriots, oh, yeah, they've won four in a row, but who have they beaten?
Starting point is 00:24:37 And oh, yeah, look it, I mean, the last couple of weeks at New Orleans, not a good team, at Tennessee, not a good team. Tennessee just fired the car. I don't care. As my guy, the Rock used to say back in the day, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter who you play when you win three straight road games in the NFL. That is incredibly tough to do. And that's the reason why this is the first time the Patriots franchise has ever done that.
Starting point is 00:25:07 It's the first time that they've ever won three straight games on the road. They had 10 opportunities prior to this one, going back to, I believe it was 1975, the stat we had on Friday's preview show. this is the first time that this organization has ever had a team that won three straight road games in the regular season. Three straight road games. It's the first time that this franchise has done that. Three straight regular season road games. That's a tremendous feat. Couldn't care less who you played.
Starting point is 00:25:40 If you want to sit there and tell me, oh, it doesn't matter. Just get off my lawn. Get off the lawn. We're not going to have a conversation. Talk to me a little bit later. That's just how it's going to happen. That's how I'm going to roll. And now you start to look at this team, okay?
Starting point is 00:25:54 This team is resilient. This team is tough. This team is mentally tough because you had the Bills Challenge, Sunday night football, on the road after you blew out Carolina at home. Bills Challenge, check. You had the Saints challenge. How would you respond after beating the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night football and going to New Orleans, a loud stadium?
Starting point is 00:26:14 New Orleans coming off of their first win of the season, feeling good about themselves. and you're feeling good about yourself. Would that be a trap game down in New Orleans? The New Orleans Saints challenge, check. And then you had the Tennessee Titans challenge. Would you look too far ahead because you're actually going to be able to play a home game next weekend? Would you get too far ahead of yourself?
Starting point is 00:26:36 Would you get too wrapped up in the emotion of Mike Vrable's return and Mike Vrable wanting revenge? Would you be able to show that level of maturity? You had a bunch of unknowns with Tennessee. What would Tennessee look like? What would their offense look like? And they did change some things. They simplified the offense for Cam Ward. They had him under center a lot more during this game than they had him in prior games this season.
Starting point is 00:27:00 So there were some changes that Tennessee made. There were some tweaks. What would you do with the emotion? What would you do with those unknowns? Third straight game on the road. A ton of travel. Second straight game where you have a noon kickoff locally. Tennessee Challenge?
Starting point is 00:27:19 Check. And I love what Mike Vrable said in the post game. He was asked about Tennessee and he said, quote, we've moved on whole different challenge, unquote. Tennessee is in the past. Revenge was served today by Mike Vrable, his coaching staff, and his players. It's time to move on. He is the head coach of the New England Patriots. And the New England Patriots are now five and two sitting in first place of the
Starting point is 00:27:46 AFC East after seven weeks of the season. moving on i thought the patriots were were better disciplined today they only had five penalties for 36 yards so not too shabby given what we've seen through the first six weeks right so i thought they were much more disciplined especially in the first half fewer penalties the run game what about the run game in the first half second half not so much but i think that's because tennessee was expecting the run they were they were you know deploying some run blitzes they were very aggressive up front, but in the first half, the Patriots actually ran the football. It was like watching a different offense.
Starting point is 00:28:26 Ramandre Stevenson was terrific to start this game. He finished with 18 carries and 88 yards, big, big first half. Now, you would hope they would carry that over into the second half, but we'll see. You've got some building blocks here. They were able to run the football and establish a tone offensively. I was fascinated at the fact that Travion Henderson did not have many touches. whatsoever. Will that continue? We'll have to wait and see, but Trayvion Henderson hardly played in the first half. Remandre was playing great. And then you saw a little bit of Terrell Jennings at the end because
Starting point is 00:29:00 I'm sure Mike Vrable and company did not want to play their top two running backs. You're going to win this game. No reason to have them out there and get one of your running backs hurt. You're already thin at that position. And Terrell Jennings, I've talked about this since last year's camp. He's a pretty strong runner he finishes strong and you saw that and i know look it's the last couple minutes of a game that you've won and you're moving forward you're moving on already but terrell jennings goes out there and he runs hard he finished his runs today and that was nice to see it was nice to see austin hooper's touchdown catch was absolutely ridiculous pop douglas is one-handed catch on fourth down and short i don't know how he caught that football so drowper's
Starting point is 00:29:45 break may got some help he got some help from his receivers today the mac hollons catch was a nice catch the stephan digs catch we mentioned earlier on the sidelines that was a nice catch and i'll say this too the fourth down with pop douglas i thought mike rable should have kicked the field goal i thought he should have kicked the field goal and went up by two possessions he didn't he went for it and pop douglas makes the spectacular catch going across the middle. But if you, whether you disagree or agree with Mike Vrable's decisions on fourth down, the specific decisions, individual, individually made those decisions, right? You can't. You can't beef with Mike Vrable on one thing. He has been consistent. He's been consistent from
Starting point is 00:30:30 the beginning of this year. If it's fourth down and he thinks it's manageable, he's going to go for. He has set that tone. He has been consistent all year long. And I'm sure his players, appreciate that consistency. I'm sure his quarterback appreciates that consistency and the confidence in the offense to keep going for it on fourth down. And the Patriots have mostly done a tremendous job, fourth down offense. A resilient football team, a mentally tough football team has now won four straight games, three straight games on the road.
Starting point is 00:31:03 They're back at Gillette next weekend against Cleveland. Cleveland stopped the Miami Dolphins. I would expect Mike McDaniel to be fired within the, the next 24 hours, but the Patriots have won four straight, onward and upward, first place in the AFC East.
