Starting point is 00:00:00 If the Pat's defense wants to succeed on Sunday, they'll have to slow down Jackson, Smith, and Jigba. It's possible, but it won't be easy. This is Lockdown Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots, your daily New England Patriots podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattels, born and raised in New England, been covering this team for the past 16 years. also the co-host of the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick Cattels and a sports radio veteran. Welcome, my friends, the lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network,
Starting point is 00:00:45 now the No, Sports Podcast Network, your team every day. On today's show, in the third segment, the NFL Hall of Fame Committee has once again spit on the Patriots legacy. In the second segment, yesterday we discussed Drake May having to be better. today, it's all about protecting the franchise. But first, the Pats need to silence Seattle's greatest weapon. Jackson, Smith, and Jigba is easily the best wide receiver the Patriots have faced all season long. He is a first team all pro, absolutely crazy productive, what he has done. 119 receptions on the year, 1793 yards, 10 touchdowns. In the NFC championship game, according to next gen stats,
Starting point is 00:01:36 JSN caught 10 of 12 targets for a team high buck 53 in that TD. Again, from next gen stats in the NFC championship game, JSN had at least one catch versus six different RAM defenders. And ESPN notes that at least eight receptions in 11 of 19 games is what JSN has done this year, averaging 9.4 targets per game. He is the heartbeat of this Seahawks passing game. And if he gets going, you are going to have an incredibly difficult time slowing down Sam Donald and slowing down this offense.
Starting point is 00:02:18 And what Seattle does, what Clint Kubiak, their OC does. is a great job of getting JSN the football. They find ways. Sometimes you watch football teams, and even though they have very good receivers, great receivers, they don't always get them the football. Did you watch the Eagles offense this year?
Starting point is 00:02:37 You get the point. That doesn't happen in Seattle. They try to feed JSN as much as possible, and they find different ways, creative ways to get them the football. They'll throw screens to him. They will throw what they call ISO, which is when Sam Donald sees off coverage against JSN on the outside,
Starting point is 00:02:58 he's just going to flip it to JSN and allow JSN to operate in space. That happened against the Rams. Shot down the field, big chunk play, next play, quick, quick little ISO out to JSN. He makes one move against defensive back, picks up 15 to 20 yards. So they will work the quick game with JSN. they'll put him all over the line of scrimmage. He'll play in the slot. He will play out wide.
Starting point is 00:03:26 ESPN notes that Jackson Smith and Jigba has 24 catches for 335 yards out of the slot. I am absolutely sure that the Seahawks and Clint Kubiak are going to try to get JSN in the slot to attack the Patriots vertically. Try to find the matchup with Jalen Hawkins or Craig Woodson or even Marcus Jones. They're going to try to hunt those matchups out of the slot and get JSN downfield. In the NFC championship game, JSN caught all six of his targets for 105 yards when he was lined out wide. That's according to next gen stats. So again, that line of scrimmage versatility, he can line up outside, he can line up inside in the slot. and they will also, the Seahawks will also attack defenses on early downs with Jackson Smith and Jigba.
Starting point is 00:04:23 They'll take shots on post routes, throwing down the field, not being too worried about it. First, second down, they'll take a shot. They'll take a shot with their guy. And maybe the most dangerous thing that the Patriots have to be ready for with Jackson Smith and Jigba on Sunday is when the Seahawks line him up in the backfield. They do this multiple times in games, and they did it multiple times against the Rams in the NFC championship game, and it killed the Rams defense.
Starting point is 00:04:53 As a matter of fact, the touchdown catch by JSN late in the first half against the Rams was with JSN lined up in the backfield. Patriots defense, they have to be ready for that. They have to communicate it. They've got to make sure that their assignment sound. Who has JSN? And is that person aware that they have JSN?
Starting point is 00:05:13 because they will move him around with some motion. They will put him all over the line of scrimmage. You have to be ready. He has to have a target, a bullseye on his chest from the very opening second of this game to the final second of this game. So how do the Patriots defend Jackson Smith in Jigba? I would lean on man coverage for a number of reasons.
Starting point is 00:05:38 The Patriots have played more man coverage as the season has gone on. They've played a good amount of man coverage. coverage in the playoffs. Evan Lazar, Patriots.com, posted that the Patriots played man coverage on 48.6% of the Denver Broncos dropbacks in the AFC championship game. Now, of course, you probably feel a little bit more comfortable against that team. They were down a couple of receivers after the first half of that first quarter. And, you know, you've got Jared Stidham, backup quarterback out there. But when the Patriots played man coverage, Jared Stidham was six for 15, 36 yards, and both of his turnovers came against man coverage.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Bill Barnwell of ESPN said that Jared Stidham against the Patriots zone coverage went 11 of 16 for 97 yards. So when the Patriots played the Broncos, man coverage, highly successful, zone coverage, not so much. If I'm the Patriots, I'm trusting Carlton Davis. I'm trusting Christian Gonzalez to be good enough. They've been good enough during this postseason. If you look at pro football focus, if a quarterback throws the football in the dirt,
Starting point is 00:06:46 if you threw it directly into the dirt every play, a quarterback would have a passerating of 39.6. Passer rating against Carlton Davis, 22.3 in this postseason. Against Gonzalez, same exact stat 39.6, as if you threw it in the dirt every play. The Patriots defense on targets of 15 plus yards, this. postseason. Fifteen targets, only three catches, a pass a rating of 12.8, two interceptions, and six forced incompletions. Man coverage has been good, if not excellent for the Patriots. Los Talks Pats on Twitter posted that per next gen stats, Gonzalez has only allowed a 39.3% completion percentage this postseason. That is the lowest percentage.
Starting point is 00:07:41 allowed by a player with 25 plus targets since at least 2018. And Gonzalez has been targeted six more times than any defender in the playoffs. And he still continues to defend at a very high level. If I'm Zach Corr, if I'm Mike Vrable, if I'm Terrell Williams, I'm looking at Jackson Smith and Jigba. I'm looking at this Seattle offense. And I'm going to lean on some of my man coverage because it's been that good. And I'm going to spin the dial.
Starting point is 00:08:09 I'll have Gonzalez play man against JSN. I'll have Gonzo with help over the top against JSN. I will have Carlton Davis and Marcus Jones every once in a while. Man up JSN, if I have to, with help over the top. That's what I would do. That's what I would do. And if you have man coverage, if you play man coverage, that opens the door for you to Blitz a lot more.
Starting point is 00:08:33 We talked about it this week about this Seattle offensive line, struggling against the blitz, struggling against stunts in games up front, playing man coverage and attacking this offensive line and attacking Sam Darnel. The Patriots blitzed, Jared Stidham. More than 40% of the time, he averaged two and a half yards per attempt.
Starting point is 00:08:55 That's according to Bill Barnwell. When you look at quarterbacks against the blitz, again, if you look at Stidham, 5 for 13, 28 yards, C.J. Stroud, six of 20 throws for 67 yards. If you look at Justin Herbert against the Patriots blitz, seven of 16 for 69 yards, got sacked three times. Some of those numbers, thanks to Mike Giardy, of Boston Sports Journal.
Starting point is 00:09:24 So the Patriots man coverage has been very, very good. Quarterback play against this Patriots defense when they've blitz this postseason has not been good. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'd play a decent amount of man, and I would blitz a decent amount against Sam Donald, not every single snap. And now I would also shade with some help often. I would have a safety back there to help whoever is playing JSN
Starting point is 00:09:54 in that man coverage. If you go back to the Vikings game plan, we talked about it this week and what Brian Flores did to attack Donald in the Seahawks offense, yes, they had a lot of guys, the line of scrimmage, they played games, they blitzed, all that stuff we talked about. They also had Harrison Smith, their safety over the top, shading towards JSN, an awful lot.
Starting point is 00:10:17 And if you don't know what JSN did against the Vikings, he finished with two catches, 23 yards. He was a complete non-factor. I'd lean in on that man coverage. I would throw blitzes and confuse Sam Donald up front. I would have some safety help a decent amount of times when I'm playing. Langman on JSN. And I would also jam him at the line of scrimmage. Try to get physical every once in a while.
Starting point is 00:10:44 Mix it up. That's how I would defend JSN. And yes, I would be giving, I would be giving Christian Gonzalez a decent amount of those man wraps. Sunday is the latest test for this Pat's Offensive line. We'll talk about it next. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.

Starting point is 00:13:56 Let's continue to show the lockdown people that the lockdown Patriots community is as good, if not better than every other community out there. Another playoff game, another significant challenge for this offensive line. And they have to protect Drake May. We talked about it. Yesterday's episode,
Starting point is 00:14:13 Drake May has to be better. The protection goes hand in hand. This defensive line of Seattle is no joke. Defensive tackles are legit. Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy, their defensive ends, DeMarcus Lawrence,
Starting point is 00:14:26 Boye Maefe. They are deep. They are good. They're big. They're explosive. And all year long, this defensive front has been highly disruptive. They are the only team.
Starting point is 00:14:42 The Seahawks are the only team in the NFL that has five players with 40 or more pressures. Not only to Marcus Lawrence and Byron Murphy and Leonard Williams and Boye-Mafe, but also Uchena Nuwosu. I mean, they've got five guys with 40 or more pressures. They can get after the quarterback. And their bet, their bet is our four will be your four. our four will beat, shoot, you're five. And that's how they feel about it. And they will not blitz a lot.
Starting point is 00:15:17 We'll get into that a little bit. But they trust their guys up front. They trust their guys up front to do what they have to do, execute the game plan and beat your offensive line. Now, there are some challenge with this. It's not just we're going to rush you straight ahead with four pass rushers. Seattle does some different things. Mike McDonald is a very smart defensive play caller.
Starting point is 00:15:39 one of the things that they do is throw a lot of stunts at offensive lines. We've talked about stunts all year long. Stunts have given some problems to Will Campbell and Jared Wilson on the left side. Those guys have to communicate. The offensive line has to communicate. If you get to pass somebody off, pass somebody off, because Seattle will continue to challenge you with stunts. Evan Lazard, Patriots.com, buddy of mine, he wrote about it this week that the Seahawks,
Starting point is 00:16:07 they have called for stunts 24.5% of the time. That's a lot. So they will challenge your offensive line and your communication skills by trying to run those stunts and twists in games. Another thing they will do is they'll have no issue bringing their linebackers up to the line of scrimmage and using them as past rushers. You will see some of those creeper pressures, simulated pressures as well when they show blitz, but they don't blitz. creeper pressures when you're, you're looking at past rushers and those guys drop back and others actually rush. Seattle will do that. They'll use their linebackers to rush you.
Starting point is 00:16:48 They will throw zone blitzes at you, you know, zone coverage and then blitz in front of that. And it's been very effective. Their pass rush has been effective this year. Let's go over some of their stats, some of their analytics. The Seahawks fourth in pressure rate this season at 38.9%. They're seventh in pass rush win rate. Boye-Mauphi is eighth at defensive end. DeMarcus Lawrence is 15th.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Defense event. Interior defensive line. Byron Murphy is 16th. So, you know, they have three guys on this defensive line that are in the top 20 when it comes to pass rush win rate and the team itself is seventh. Now, I'll also tell you this. their time to pressure doesn't jump off the page at you. Their time to pressure is 17th. So they are in the middle of the pack in time to pressure,
Starting point is 00:17:42 but they've got good cornerbacks. They've got physical cornerbacks. They have a scheme that is really tough. And again, Mike McDonald is a very good defensive player caller and a head coach. And, you know, when you look at what they want to do, their linebackers, Ernest Jones, flies around the field, very difficult, very athletic, to deal with.
Starting point is 00:18:02 We've talked about a little bit Nick Ammorey and what he does. So it's the cornerbacks. It's the scheme, the linebackers. So even though they're 17th in time to pressure, they're getting pressure rate, they're getting hits, they're getting after you. They don't blitz a ton, though.
Starting point is 00:18:20 They do not blitz a ton. They will run those stunts. They will run those games. They will use linebackers as pass rushers. But on the season, in the regular season, the Seahawks were 25th in blitz rate, 22% of the time. And when you go back and you watch the NFC championship game, they hardly blitzed Matthew Stafford.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Seattle's defense blitzed 18.4% of the time against the Rams in that NFC championship game. I will also tell you that they were not necessarily great in the NFC championship game when it comes to getting pressure. Again, their pressure rate on the season was 38.9 against the Rams in the NFC championship game, it was 10% worse at 28.9%. So they didn't blitz a lot.
Starting point is 00:19:07 They blitzed below what they usually do, and their pressure rate dropped precipitously. They were fourth in pressure rate out of the four teams that played in the conference championship. So when you look at what you're going to do, the pressure is on. Will Campbell, the pressure is on. Jared Wilson, according to Mike Reese,
Starting point is 00:19:27 he had this note, the Patriots are the first team to start multiple. rookie offensive lineman in a Super Bowl. I will give a tip of the cap to Jared Wilson, who's been good after the Chargers game. He was very rough in that first playoff game, but I think he's been good, if not really good, the last couple of playoff games.
Starting point is 00:19:46 Will Campbell was better against Denver, but you're going to have to be able to deal with it. Other things you can do to try to stem the pass rush from Seattle, Ramandre Stevenson. He's done a terrific job in pass protection. and Ramandre Stevenson has to be ready for those stunts if somebody gets free. The communication has to be there. You got to pick up a free rusher.
Starting point is 00:20:09 If there's a free rusher about to blow through that offensive line, you've got to get there in Stonewall him. And Ramandre Stevenson has done a very good job of doing that. So running backs and pass protection, which is why I'm not so sure Trayvion Henderson is going to get a ton of run on Sunday. Another huge thing is just Drake May diagnosing at the line. line of scrimmage, understanding what's in front of him and diagnosing stuff so he's not as confused, setting the protections correctly, making sure he's shifting Stevenson to the right
Starting point is 00:20:42 spot, all those little things. And we've talked about it. You can extend against this Seattle defense if you are a mobile quarterback. You can scramble some against this Seattle defense if you're a mobile quarterback, and that will help you get away from the pass rush at times. And one more thing, I've seen on tape that you can run some gun draws, some delayed handoffs at times against Seattle. So you might want to throw a couple of those at the Seahawks on Sunday. But it is going to be another tough challenge for this O line, this quarterback and really everybody on the Patriots offense.
Starting point is 00:21:20 Another vote, another sign of disrespect towards New England dynasties. That's next. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. We've been all Super Bowl up to this point and we will continue to be all Super Bowl post this point, post this segment. And tomorrow we'll be ready with your crossover on Friday. We'll do a deep dive preview and give you my prediction. But I've got to get this off my chest. And last week,
Starting point is 00:23:56 we went through the Bill Belichick stuff in the Hall of Fame and the Hall of Fame committee. I did a breaking news, live video on that, thanks to those who watched and joined in. But last week it was Bill Belichick getting dissed by the Hall of Fame voting committee. And this week we found out, we found out on Tuesday morning that it's Robert Kraft getting shunned again. And this is just incomprehensible by the committee. first of all, clear bias towards the Patriots. And if people who are not Patriots fans want to try to attack or criticize Patriots fans and say, oh, you've got a complex and you're trying to play the victim.
Starting point is 00:24:40 No, it is clear. The Pittsburgh dynasties, a bunch of guys got in, including the owner and the head coach. The Dallas dynasty, a bunch of players got in, including the owner and the head coach. The Patriots, Belichick, not a first ballot hall of famer, joke. Robert Kraft, whether you feel like owners should be in the football Hall of Fame or not, it doesn't matter, they are. Robert Kraft not being in the Hall of Fame, Jerry Jones being in the Hall of Fame. Absolute freaking joke.
Starting point is 00:25:12 I'll have more on Kraft in a little bit. Adam Vinatieri, best kicker in NFL history. Most points in NFL history, not a first ballot Hall of Famer. Rodney Harrison has deserved to be in the Hall of Fame for a, number of years at this point. It's embarrassing that he is not there. He's one of the best safeties that's ever played the game of football. This is a clear bias. And it's outright ridiculous. Six Super Bowls, two separate dynasties. The jealousy is oozing out of every poor. What are we doing? It's truly tough, truly tough to understand how this happens without
Starting point is 00:25:55 believing there's jealousy, there's pettiness. These voters have been exposed. The system has been exposed. And I'll get into the whole excuse making for this system a little bit later. But let's look at Robert Kraft. Clear and obvious case for the Hall of Fame as an owner. And I don't care what happened in Florida. There are people that are in the Hall of Fame up for the Hall of F that have done a lot worse. Clear and obvious case. I remind people about the 2011 CBA negotiations when Jeff Saturday stood there in front of all the cameras
Starting point is 00:26:44 with his arm around Robert Kraft and he said that Kraft helped save football. If not for Robert Kraft, the NFL might have gone into a lockout and likely would have locked out in 2011. And Kraft helped save the game. He helped save the New England Patriots as a franchise. They didn't move to St. Louis. They didn't move to Connecticut. Kept it in a top 10 market, or at least close to a top 10 market.
Starting point is 00:27:16 He hired Bill Belichick, greatest coach of all time. His team has won six Super Bowls, gone to a billion of them, gone to a trillion AFC Conference Championship games. He is also, he is also, been the chair of the NFL's media committee for over a decade working on some of the biggest television contracts that the league has ever seen. How is this guy not a Hall of Famer? It's a complete and utter joke. It is a circus. You are turning something that should be honorable and intelligent and full of common sense into a circus. By the way, Robert Kraft turns
Starting point is 00:27:59 85 years old in June. I certainly wish great health. I certainly wish great health onto Robert Kraft. But he's going to be 85 in June. It feels especially cruel that you have not voted in
Starting point is 00:28:16 somebody who is so clearly, so clearly ready to be voted in. Somebody who should be in has an obvious case. It feels especially cruel given his time likely left on this planet. that you continue to bypass him.
Starting point is 00:28:34 It's, it is, it's a travesty. And I don't want to hear any of the excuses. I did not want to hear the excuses with Belichick. I don't want to hear the excuses this time around. Oh, well, there's, you know, only so many senior members. And, but the committee has one job. The one job that the committee has is to vote for the best three candidates. That's it.
Starting point is 00:29:00 This is not a math equation. this is not, you know, trying to strategize and figure out what other members of the committee are doing and who they're going to vote for. Starting point is 00:29:27 Start all over again with this process. Whatever you've got to do. because you have made a mockery of yourself. And I'm done with the excuses. This is simple. Vote for the guys who deserve it. All right, that wraps up this edition of Lockdown Patriots. Thank you for making us your first listen for being in Every Dayer.
