Drake May kicks off mandatory minicamp, absolutely sizzling and got the highlight of the day from A.J. Brown. This is Locked on Patriots. great. He was absolutely sizzling. And here's the good news beyond just Drake May cooking on day one of mini camp. The even better news is that the offense worked primarily in the red zone on Tuesday. And we all know there have been issues in the red zone. There were issues in the red zone last year. Mike Frable speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon said, you know, we got to look at the red zone, turnovers, negative plays in the red zone, that is a key. That is a key to changing our offensive efficiency and being even better on that side of the football. So on Tuesday, it was pretty much all red zone work for the offense.

And Drake May was 19 for 22 and 11 on 11th. 19 for 22. Now, Christian Gonzalez wasn't involved with the 11 on 11s. We'll get to that later on. But still, when you talk about the red zone, when you talk about the low red zone area, that makes it easier for the defense. That makes it easier for the secondary. But Drake May 19 for 22, he had one or two, quote unquote, sacks.

And the biggest play of the day was from Drake May to A.J. Brown, his new number one receiver. Phil Perry posted, Drake May and A.J. Brown combined for one of the plays of the day early in an 11-on-11 period. May found Brown on a back shoulder throw near the front corner of the end zone. Brown made a twisting, leaping catch beating corner Kindle Vildor to the football. Evan Lazar posted. Drake May hit AJ Brown on a back shoulder high point fade for a touchdown from about 20 yards out. Greg Bedard, the wet blanket. Greg Bedard posted about the play, a thing of beauty, an unstoppable, impressive.

Mike Reese posted about AJ Brown, AJ Brown and his knack for tight window catches a top takeaway today. But it wasn't just all about AJ Brown's play. It wasn't just all about AJ Brown and Drake May. Drake May had some other nice plays. Taylor Kyle's from CL&S posted. Drake May had his best day in front of reporters through deep touchdown passes to Hunter Henry and Ramandre Stevenson,

completed a back shoulder fade to AJ Brown, and had just three incomplete. including one of the three incompletions from Drake May at practice today was when he threw a ball in the dirt on purpose when there was a slot blitz and there was a screen set up. Phil Perry posted aside from A.J. Brown's back shoulder score. Other highlights included a dime cornerout touchdown to Hunter Henry and some nifty pocket movement to avoid pressure and an on-the-move completion to Remandre Stevenson in the flat. F.Y. I. Carlton Davis, was out on the practice field.

So the Patriots were down Christian Gonzalez, but Carlton Davis was out there. This was a very good day for Drake May. It was a very good day for the offense in the red zone. Another observation, interestingly enough, from Phil Perry, is that Drake May varied his pace on the offensive snaps. So he was getting to the line of scrimmage, he was snapping quicker at times than other times.

And when we talk about Drake May's improvement, We talk about his growth and where he can develop. One of the major points we have made is at the line of scrimmage. And that is something that Mike Vrable and Josh McDaniels have talked about, improving, developing even more at the line of scrimmage. And Drake May, varying the pace of the offensive snaps is just one step towards improving at the line of scrimmage. What about the offensive line? Well, the offensive line saw some juggling.

Morgan Moses did not practice. We'll stick a pin in this because we know that Morgan Moses left the final OTA practice with a trainer. Obviously Morgan Moses, 35 years old, has dealt with a bunch of nagging injuries over the past few years. He was not there at mandatory minicamp day one. I'm not going to panic about Morgan Moses. I'm not going to start losing my mind about Morgan Moses. We know that Mike Vrable and this coaching staff, is going to manage Moses.

So just because he's not out there, day one of mandatory minicamp doesn't mean that he couldn't be out there if it was day one of training camp or day one of a joint practice against the Eagles or day one of the actual football season. So I'm not going to panic. I'm not going to freak out about Morgan Moses, 35 years old, dealing with something. You're best managing him instead of rushing him out of the football field. for day one of mandatory mini-camp. Morgan Moses has had plenty of mandatory mini-camp practices in his NFL career.

So there's no reason to rush him to show that type of urgency. You have five to six weeks before camp starts, take that time, see if you can get him right. Now, if we find out more, if we get to camp in Morgan Moses is not out there, then we start to have that conversation. But for this week, I'm not going to lose my mind. So what Morgan Moses not starting with the first unit at Mandatory Minicamp, who was your starting right tackle? Caleb Lomu.

Caleb Lomu was your starting right tackle day one. He played a bunch of snaps as the starting tackle on the right side in front of Drake May. Also, Caleb Lomu played some second unit left tackle, which tells us what we already know. The Patriots are gunning for Caleb Lomu. to be their swing tackle option. That's the guy they want. They want him to be the first tackle off the bench.

Makes sense. You moved up in the first round. You draft him at 28th overall. You make that move. You're not going to sit him for the whole year. He's going to get some snaps. So Lomu replaced Morgan Moses at right tackle with the starting unit, but then slid to left tackle on the second unit.

So we start to see that swing tackle ability from Caleb Lomu. Phil Perry also noted that Marcus Bryant, seventh round pick in last year's draft. He was also in the mix at right tackle one. So Marcus Bryant did get some snaps. Lomu came out. Bryant got in there,

took some snaps, but it was mostly Lomu at right tackle one. Demetrius Crownover also got some right tackle one snaps. So you're working those three young guys out, right? Caleb Lomu, Marcus Bryant, Demetrius, over all getting a different amount of snaps at right tackle one. But Caleb Loma was the first dude out there.

Some other good news about the offensive line. Elijah Vera Tucker, we know his injury history, and we know that through OTAs, Elijah Vera Tucker, he didn't participate in a bunch. Well, day one, mandatory minicamp, AVT, saw more snaps. He was more competitive. he had an uptick in his participation. Great sign. As you get on the road towards Elijah Vera Tucker being able to get a full practice under his belt, he's picking up his participation. So it looks like

Elijah Vera Tucker is exactly where you want him to be at this point during camp. And you would imagine he'll be even more involved when you get to training camp in late July. But overall, A really good day for the offense. Drake May sizzling, A.J. Brown with the play of the day, exactly what you wanted to hear after that A.J. Brown trade. Day one of mandatory minicamp, he's already making an impact. I'm not going to go bananas. It's mandatory mini camp.

But it is very nice to hear that Drake May is throwing a back shoulder to A.J. Brown in the red zone. and they complete that pass and catch for the play of the day, because that means they've got some pretty good chemistry very early on. So overall, really good day for the offense. Excellent day for your quarterback. All right. Coming up, Christian Gonzalez makes his intentions clear,

I'm just thinking about A.J. Brown contested catches in the red zone and how much better that can make this offense and this quarterback. It's a lot of fun to think about. Day one, mandatory minicamp, don't want to get too far ahead, but you get the point. Christian Gonzalez was always going to show up. But what matters is what he actually actually does at mandatory minicamp. And we got our answer on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Kisham Booty's early involvement has me surprised and has me a little intrigue.

Appreciate you joining us from Germany. I want to go to Germany so bad. It's on the bucket list. And I hope I'm able to get there sooner rather than later. One corrupt file says, damn, that stinks. How did Caleb Lomu look? Well, according to Greg Bedard,

I read his report and Bedard said that Lomu's movement looked good and overall the offensive line the protection was solid. So day one, we'll see. We'll see what happens. Moving forward, if that protection remains the same.

All right, let's get to Christian Gonzalez and Kishan Booty. They were both at mandatory minicamp. This is not a surprise. If you don't go to mandatory minicamp, you get fine. Now, if you go back a couple years ago, when you got fined,

you could have those fines rescinded. That's no longer the case. So if you don't want to get fine, you show up. So I'm not surprised that you had both Christian Gonzalez and Kay Sean Booty at mandatory minicamp. Underline the word mandatory. They're not getting fine. Marshaun Lynch, I'm just here so I won't get fine. They don't want to get fine.

But let's start with Christian Gonzalez because Christian Gonzalez, my expectation was that Christian Gonzalez was not going to participate much, if at all, during mandatory minicamp. I did not anticipate him being out there on the field a lot, pushing it, so to speak, because he doesn't want to get an injury. He wants to contract. He wants to get paid. And on Tuesday, Christian Gonzalez did not take part in team drills. He did not take part in 11 on 11s. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a holden. That's what's happening. Now, a hold out is when you don't show up. A hold out is when you just stay away from everybody.

You stay away from the facility. You don't want to be bothered. You don't talk to the media. Maybe you do talk to the media, but it's certainly not at practice. It's not at the facility. Sometimes it's not okayed by the team. A hold in is when you show up to the facility, when you're taking part somewhat in mandatory minicamp

by doing an individual drill or two, speaking to the media. So what we have on our hands is officially a Christian Gonzalez Holden. If you were wondering, this is a Holden. Gonzalez spoke to the media after the practice. He said, quote, of course I want to be here. I've said this multiple times. I was drafted here. I want to be rewarded as a patriot.

I love this town. I love this city. So yeah, of course I want to be here, unquote. Yeah, he wants to be in New England. if he can get paid. He wants to be in New England. He wants to be paid as a top cornerback in football. You go back to a couple of months ago when he was at the Celtics game and he's doing the money symbol, right? When he's shown on the big screen, he wants his pay day. And he is well within his rights. I think he has earned the contract extension. And I think this contract extension will get done.

but Christian Gonzalez is not going to go out of the practice field and be heavily involved when he's trying to sign a brand new contract extension worth tens of millions of dollars. It's just not going to happen. So this is within his rights and he's going to continue to push and he should continue to push. Let the man get paid. Taylor Kyle's posted. Christian Gonzalez says he hopes there's progress being made on his extension. but that his agent is handling that matter on whether he's optimistic that a deal is getting done soon.

I hope so, quote unquote. Phil Perry also posted Christian Gonzalez, quote, I got obligations. I'm here, unquote. So there you have it. I've got obligations. The reason why I'm at mandatory minicamp is because I am obligated to be at mandatory minicamp. Plain and simple. So there's no reading between the lines here.

there's no gray. It's black, it's white. Christian Gonzalez is holding in. He wants a new contract. And I don't think he's going to be very involved until he gets that done. And I want Christian Gonzalez involved at camp, don't you? I'm sure the Patriots want Gonzalez involved at camp and out there for 11 on 11s. He is critically important to this defense.

His ability to play man coverage on the outside allows you to be aggressive up front. That's a major reason why we saw the Patriots defense be so good in the playoffs. They were so good in the postseason because they were ultra aggressive up front, which allowed them to get a pass rush that they were not consistently getting with the four-man rush. Christian Gonzalez is a major piece to that puzzle. So I want him out there. I want him practicing. Also his injury history.

He's got to get lubed up, so to speak. It's going to get those muscles loose. So I hope this gets done sooner rather than later. And I hope this does not drag out until training camp, which is, I believe, July 23rd they announced today, is the first training camp practice. I hope this gets done some point in July. If it takes that long,

Saus Gardner got his deal done last year in July. I have consistently said, I have consistently said that I think Christian Gonzalez will get this extension. I think it gets done in July like sauce gardener. Kishon Booty, meanwhile. He was the surprise of the day. Surprise of the day, according to those people on the ground. Now, why was Kishan Booty the surprise of the day?

Because he not only participated, he got a decent amount of reps. Mark Daniels, Mass Live posted, Kishan Booty practiced a good amount today. The first time the Patriots played three wide receivers, it was A.J. Brown to Mario Douglas, and Kishon Booty on the field. Mike Giarty posted. Booty was significantly involved in today's practice. Taylor Kyle's. Kishon Booty was one of the top receivers in a heavy rotation,

lined up at X with A.J. Brown on the field with A.J. Brown at Z. And so this is intriguing. It's interesting because not only was Kishan Booty involved in this practice, he was involved heavily for a guy who has not been at the facility. over the last couple of months. Day one of mandatory minicamp, he's there because he's obligated to be there, but he was much more involved than Christian Gonzalez.

And it begs the question, do the Patriots actually see a role for Kishan Bouty within this offense if Kayshan Bouty is willing to play ball, so to speak? And he's not so worried about getting as many targets. Now, I still think Kayshan Bouty is going to get traded. but I do think this begs the question of whether or not Kishan Bouti could play more inside to go along with outside.

That versatility could create the argument that he deserves to be wide receiver three. He is better than Mack Hollins, a higher ceiling. And if Kishan Bouti isn't worried about his contract and he's willing to just play football and get out there this year, there is absolutely the argument that Kishan Bouti is one of your top three or four receivers, and he makes the room better. Now, I have not believed that Kishan Bouti would be willing to do that.

I figured that Bouti wants to get dealt because he wants more opportunity. He wants more targets. Now, Bouti also met with the media. Taylor Kiles posted that Bouti says his absence during the voluntary offsees, and program did not have anything to do with trade rumors or the AJ Brown trade. He also reiterated he wants to be in New England. So all this trade talk is that actually coming from Booty side? You know, did Booty go to the Patriots or his agent go to the Patriots and say,

Hey, man, can we try to get Cajon somewhere else so we can get more opportunity? And the Patriots said, we'll try our best. but we're not going to give him away. And now the agent knows that right now the Kishan Booty market is not necessarily super hot. So Kishan Booty is willing to play ball, shows up, not only shows up, but he's out there on the field a decent amount. I still think he gets dealt. But there's an argument, again, of keeping your best four or five and just rolling with this offense. So things might be a little bit more interesting regarding Kishan Booty than I thought.

which is not a bad thing, by the way. The more good players you have, the better your football team is. The latest on Gabe Accus leaves us with a number of questions. It's coming up next. this channel and in this podcast. Gabe Accus missed OTAs. Gabe Accus is also not going to be on the field for mandatory minicamp. And it's not just because of his contract not being signed. Last week, Mike Reese reported that from what he understood, Gabe Accus's absence at OTAs was most,

mostly health-related. And Mike Reese pointed to the hamstring that cost Gabe Accus his pro-day. And he had to set something up aside from the pro-day at Illinois. He had to do like a one-off for a few teams. And so when we talked about it last week, it sounded like Gabe Accus had a hamstring issue and the Patriots were being cautious. But he was going to be hopefully back out there by a mandatory minicamp. and, you know, getting his feet wet the NFL.

That's what we thought. He'd be back soon. Well, slightly more ominous after Mike Vrable met with the media. Vrable, this is transcribed by Phil Perry, said that Gabe Accus is not at mandatory minicamp. He said, quote, he's not under contract at this current time, unquote. Vrable also said about Gabe Accus. quote, he's had a procedure and that Accus hasn't been able to work with the coaching staff on the grass.

Now, Mike Giardy apparently asked Mike Vrable a follow-up about this Gabe Accus procedure. And he asked Mike Vrable if he knew about Accus's procedure when they drafted him. And Mike Giardy said that Mike Vrable talked around the question, adding that they're looking forward to working with Gabe Accus when he said, signs and is medically cleared. So Gabe Accus had some type of procedure. We don't know what kind of procedure. We don't know when this procedure happened.

We don't know how significant the procedure was. We just know that he had some type of procedure. Mike Giardy said, hey, did you guys know about this procedure that was needed you know, before the draft, during the draft, when you drafted him? And Mike Vrable did not give him. a direct answer. So we don't know what's going on here. As far as the contract in Gabacus, I'm not worried about the contract. We went through this last year with Trayvion Henderson. The NFL, things have changed. Second round picks are now getting guaranteed money for multiple

years. Second round picks hardly ever got, you know, guaranteed money multiple years. That changed last year. So I'm not worried about the contract. Second round pick. take time to get done now as far as signing their deals. As a matter of fact, Travion Henderson last year officially signed his contract on July 19. So we are still a month plus away from when Trayvion Henderson got his deal done. So I'm not worried about the contract. But this injury issue, yeah, we've got to keep an eye on this. Because even though Trayvion Henderson did not get his deal signed until July 19th of last year, Trayvion Henderson was at Mandatory Minicamp. And Trayvion Henderson did take part in Mandatory Minicamp.

People were raving about what he did at minicamp last year. So that's a key difference between Trayvon Henderson and Gabe Accus. And of course, with this procedure, that's another significant difference. I mean, did the Patriots not know that there was a problem with Gabe Accus? Did they not know that he was going to need this surgery? Did they underestimate Gabe Accus's condition? And that's a key question because they just traded for A.J. Brown last week. And one of the big questions about A.J. Brown is his knee.

And I am trusting and you are trusting. Elliot Wolf is trusting. Mike Vrable is trusting the doctors, the trainers, the medical staff. They are trusting that medical staff to get the information. on A.J. Brown correct. So what's going on with Gabe Accus? We do not know. Now, it might not be a big deal.

It might be a minor procedure. We just don't know. But it is critical because not only got the A.J. Brown thing. You got the Gabe Accus thing. You got the defensive end thing. Because Harold Landry, he's not going to be at minicamp. I mean, he's there, but he's not going to be involved. Mike Vrable said, quote, we'll just keep working to make sure that Harold Landry is ready to go when we need him.

So they are going to handle Harold Landry with kid gloves. So now you don't have Gabe Accus. You don't have Harold Landry. Both now are injury issues, which obviously is not ideal. And so when you're going through, you know, minicamp, you're going through camp. We don't know if Landry or Accus is going to be back by camp. If they're not back by the beginning of camp, now you've got your starting tackles, you've got your young tackles working against Draymond Jones and Elijah Ponder.

And so it not only impacts your defense at edge, it not only impacts your pass rush, but it impacts your offensive line because your offensive line, they're not getting consistent reps against your best. Draymond Jones and Harold Landry, they're going to start. But Gabakas Elijah Ponder are three and four. So right now, you're missing your number one guy and your number four guy at edge. And so that's an issue. That's an issue.

It is not ideal for Gabe Accus to have surgery at any point, but especially before signing an NFL contract and before getting out there on the practice field. He is behind. He is absolutely behind. And we'll see what this injury is and we'll see how long he's going to be out. If we're talking about something that's going to cost Gabe Accus, even a portion of his camp, that's a problem. That's a problem for Accus.

that's a problem for the edge position and the lack of depth at that position. So this is something that we've got to pay very close attention to. And hopefully Mike Vrable gets a little bit more descriptive eventually about what's going on here. He doesn't have to give us every single detail. But I would love to know, is this something where, you know, Gabe Accus? Is this something where he's going to be out for a month, two months, three months? Can he be back tomorrow? Could he be back in a week?

We don't know. I would love to know. I would love to know. One edge note from minicamp practice on Tuesday, Phil Perry did mention that Elijah Ponder had a nice practice. Had a nice practice. He had a quote unquote sack and he broke up a screen pass. So that was good to hear.
