Starting point is 00:00:00 The magic carpet ride ends. The incredible run is over. The Pats get brutalized against Seattle in the Super Bowl. And it's time for the autopsy. This is Lockdown Patriots. You are Locked-on Patriots. Your daily New England Patriots podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:29 What's happening? I am your host, Nick Cattles, born and raised in New England. Been covering the Pats for the past 16 years. also the co-host of the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick Cattels and a sports radio veteran. Welcome to Lockdown Patriots, part of the lockdown podcast network. Now the number one sports podcast network, your team every day. On tonight's live post game in the third segment, the margin for error should remind us how much still needs to be done with this football team in this roster. In the second segment, the final score gives absolutely zero justice for how this defense actually.
Starting point is 00:01:04 played against the Seahawks, but first, a terrible, terrible night at the office for the offense. Today's episode is brought to by Fandul. The winter games are on, and there's no better way to follow them than with a bet on Fandul, Fandul, play your game. As we talked about this Super Bowl, leading into it, the two weeks we had to discuss what we thought could happen, what might happen, what should happen. I said from the very beginning that I did not have to be a lot of confidence that the Patriots would be able to move the ball consistently against the Seahawks defense. I had said from the very beginning the Patriots would need turnovers. They would need Sam Donald to turn the football over. They would need for maybe Kenneth Walker to fumble.
Starting point is 00:01:52 They would need a short field or two to win this game, to give them the best chance. And what we saw from the Seahawks defense was even more dominant than I expected. and I thought they would be very, very good against this Patriots offense and offensive line. But let's start talking about the offensive line. They got smoke. They got embarrassed. They got humiliated. They got manhandled.
Starting point is 00:02:17 The offensive line was atrocious. There's no other way to look at this. Will Campbell right out of the gates getting pushed back into the lap of Drake May. Jared Wilson missing a block on a pretty. important early run call on second down, just completely missing his block. He's getting pushed back into Drake May's lap. Morgan Moses, Michael Wenu, getting beat on a stunt play. I mean, all of these things, all of these things culminated in a truly brutal, awful night
Starting point is 00:02:56 for your offensive line. There's really no other way to describe what we saw. on the fumble Michael Wenu gets beat. Morgan Moses is trying to handle a stunt up front. Because Michael Wenu gets beat, Drake May has to kind of step up into the pocket. Morgan Moses gives up that pressure. I don't even know if he knew Drake May was where he was
Starting point is 00:03:20 when he fumbled the football. Your offensive line got their tucas, handed to them. That's where it all starts. We can talk about Josh McDaniels. We'll talk about the offense. We'll talk about Drake May, but that's where it starts. Your offensive line at the very beginning of this football game was not ready, and they were not close to being good enough.
Starting point is 00:03:43 And you had the trickle-down effect, because as soon as your offensive line showed itself, at the beginning of this game, what happened? Drake May sped up. And we've seen this before. It happens to a lot of quarterbacks, not just Drake May, but it happens to a lot of quarterbacks. when your offensive line is as bad as this offensive line was against the pass rush early, that's going to get to a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:04:08 And Drake May almost immediately starts to speed up. And because he starts to speed up, he's erratic. And he was erratic all night long. He missed four or five throws that you have to have. Against this Seahawks defense, we talked about it. You're going to have tight windows. you're going to have not a ton of opportunities. And when you have an opportunity, you've got to make the throw.
Starting point is 00:04:34 You've got to make the play. You cannot miss Hunter Henry in the seam on a quick throw and throw it high and behind him. Now, could Hunter Henry catch that football? Sure, he could have caught that ball. But it would have been easier to catch the football if the quarterback made a better throw. I mean, you can't miss Cajon Booty. like Drake May missed in this game. You can't miss Austin Hooper wide open on a blown coverage.
Starting point is 00:05:01 You can't miss Pop Douglas who got open and you missed him. There were some throws that were there that Drake May has to make in the biggest game of his career. And he didn't. He was not sharp enough. It goes back to the offensive line. It sped him up early. And as soon as that happened, he was just not sharp enough. He had a couple of highs.
Starting point is 00:05:24 The back-to-back, beautiful throws on the touchdown on that first touchdown drive, those two throws were a thing of beauty. Those are the elite plays that we've seen Drake May make within this offense, but too little too late. And he was way too erratic. He was not seeing the rush as good enough as you need to see the rush. And so it was just kind of a combination of a number of things. Your offensive line was crumbling in front of you.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Your quarterback, I think, was speeding himself up, and he wasn't seeing the field great at all times because of it. When he had a little bit of time, he had an opportunity to make a throw, his inaccuracy bit him in the butt. And so, you know, you just can't, you can't play that way. You really cannot play that way. Not against this defense. When you feel like you're constantly second and long, third and long, that is a death now. We talked about it. You have to stay on schedule.
Starting point is 00:06:19 You have to have some positive plays on early downs. The interception downfield, that's a force. That's a forced throw. He threw it into triple, maybe even quadruple coverage down the field earlier on that drive to Matt Collins. He got away with it. Then he forces another throw downfield trying to do too much too soon, trying to get all the points back up on the board. And you just can't make that throw in the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:06:46 You just can't have it. I was also surprised that Drake May, his legs were not as big of a factor. They were later in the game. Seattle gave up a couple of scrambles, but May's legs were not a huge factor in this game. I thought Seattle did a pretty good job of kind of, you know, muddying the pocket, so to speak. There were really no design runs. That surprised me, especially on short yardage. I thought for sure you'd see a couple of design runs from May.
Starting point is 00:07:13 We didn't see any of that. And he wasn't sharp. Another thing that I did not understand about the offense tonight was Ramandre Stevenson. Why was Ramandre Stevenson not a bigger part of this game plan? Stevenson had seven carries going into the fourth quarter. I don't understand that. I do not understand. He finished with seven carries.
Starting point is 00:07:36 How does Ramandre Stevenson, who has been your best offensive player over the past month and a half to two months, how in the world does he have seven carries tonight? He was averaging over three yards of carry. It's not great, but you've got to give him the football more than you gave him the football. How in the world does your best offensive player get seven carries? And I thought there was some lack of commitment to the run game. The Patriots would run the ball. They'd get three or four yards on first down.
Starting point is 00:08:02 And then Josh McDaniels and Drake May fell in love with the idea of throwing the ball. It was a cycle that was endless for the Patriots offense in the first half. You run the ball on first down. You get three or four yards. and then on second and six or second and seven, you try to throw the football and you get a negative play. You get sacked. You get an incomplete pass. You get chaos.
Starting point is 00:08:23 And then you're looking at third and long. That was the cycle. And for the life of me, I just did not understand why Josh McDaniels didn't say, okay, we get three yards on the first down from Stevenson. Let's try to run the football again. Get three yards on first down. Get three or four yards on second down. Now you're looking at third and four, third and three. that is much more manageable.
Starting point is 00:08:45 It felt like the Patriots, they were chasing big plays all night long. Run the ball. You get three yards. Run the ball again. If you get three yards, now you got a third and four to deal with. Now you might be able to get a little bit creative. But the run the ball on first down for three yards and then try to pass, get a negative play, look at third and forever, and force a three and out and have to punt the football.
Starting point is 00:09:09 I felt like I was watching Groundhog's Day. It was the same thing over and over and over and. over and over again. I thought there were too many straight dropbacks with the offensive line getting cooked up. And I understand the Patriots, you know, they didn't move the pocket great in this postseason. It hasn't been a strength for them. But I'm looking at it.
Starting point is 00:09:28 I'm saying, why don't you move the pocket a little bit more? I mean, these straight dropbacks when your offensive line is getting just trucked, it's just not going to work. The long developing plays are not going to work consistently. Rough night. Brutal. And you can't blame the weather. The weather was fine.
Starting point is 00:09:55 It was tough. You got wide receivers that can't get open quickly, consistently. You have the non-committal O.C. On the run game for whatever reason. You got your offensive line getting bulldozed. And you got your quarterback thinking too much. still a very young dude and a big, big game, biggest game of his life, and he has sped up and he's erratic.
Starting point is 00:10:18 And you combine all of those factors. You miss a couple of opportunities. You get a handful of opportunities to make a play. And you miss on those opportunities through the first two and a half, three quarters. And this is what you get. You get an atrocious night from your offense. All right. Coming up, we got a lot to talk about.
Starting point is 00:10:36 The defense. I thought the defense did all it could do. We'll talk about that. This is Lockdown Patriots, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. The Winter Games are officially here. And if you're anything like us, you're locking in for events. You only get to see on the biggest stage every four years. And that's why following the Winter Games on Fandul just makes sense.
Starting point is 00:10:59 From metal counts to individual events to finding your angle on the sports you care about most, Fandul gives you more ways to stay connected to the action, the drama of curling matches that start slow and somehow get intense fast. speed skating races, decided by inches, hockey games that feel different right from the opening face off. Even niche events become must watch when you're fully locked into the competition. And Fandul keeps the entire Olympic experience engaging from start to finish. We're talking about the winter games. I love the winter games. You love the winter games. And the winter games are on. And there's no better way to follow them than with Fandul.
Starting point is 00:11:39 We're talking about Fandul for the past several months. You know about it. How great. great it is, check it out. Fandle, I'll tell you, play your game. All right, so the offense stunk. We just ripped them apart. We criticized them like they deserve to be criticized. I want to get to the defense because I thought the defense for most of this night was a bright spot. But we know some of you, likely most of you, are not fond of interruptions.

Starting point is 00:12:23 Don't forget the comment. Don't forget to subscribe. The defense is not going to get enough credit because of the final score. People are going to look at this final score and they're going to say, man, you got waxed 29 to 16. And yet, you did get waxed at the end of the day. However, that was not on the defense. I give the defense a ton of credit.
Starting point is 00:12:46 I thought they were pretty great, at least for the first three quarters or so. They were excellent in the red zone. I mean, the first two, two and a half quarters, absolutely terrific in the red zone. The Seahawks moved the ball, the Patriots, they stood up in the red area defensively. I mean, some big stops early in this game, keeping Seattle to three points, giving up field goal after field go, after field goal. after field. I mean, this thing at the half was 9-0. It could have easily been worse than that. But the ability to slow down the Seahawks offense in the red zone, it spoke volumes. I mean, you're really looking at this and 4.7 yards per play isn't the worst thing in the world.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Seattle was 4 for 16 on third down. In the red zone, they were one for four. So you're coming up with big stops. And the only touchdown you gave up in the red zone, was because the levy broke. At that point when A.J. Barner, who was one of my X factors in this game and the preview, you know, at the point when you give up that touchdown to A.J. Barner, I just think this defense was just tired. This defense was gassed. I mean, you could see in the sidelines after the fumble by by Drake May in this game, they showed a close-up of some of the defenders on the line on the sidelines. And they were, you could see how dejected they were. I mean, they had a play.
Starting point is 00:14:12 A lot of football, man. Time of possession was 33 minutes to 27 minutes. And, you know, you look at the second third quarters. It's like you're constantly out there. And so I thought finally the levy broke. The Patriots had a play against the run, thinking that Seattle would run the football late. I was surprised how much Clint Kubiak threw the ball.
Starting point is 00:14:32 I thought Seattle was kind of crazy. I mean, Seattle should have just ran the football in the fourth quarter and finished this game up. They kind of left the door open, but, man, the offense couldn't do, anything. But Seattle stayed pretty aggressive late into this game. It surprised me. But by the time you throw that touchdown to Barner, your defense is just tired. And you're playing the run and you're going to suck up on the play action and you're
Starting point is 00:14:56 going to give up a play. But I thought this defense for most of this night was really good. Craig Woodson, I thought, was excellent. Craig Woodson was flying downhill. He was making tackles. He had a pass breakup as well. I believe what against Cooper Cup inside the five-yard line. I thought your rookie safety was one of your best players tonight. And Craig Woodson has been good all year long. He got better as the year went on. I thought he was really good in the postseason. And I thought he was mostly terrific tonight. So great job by one of your youngest defenders in his biggest game. I thought Craig Woodson was really good. Christian Gonzalez was also really freaking good. Too huge.
Starting point is 00:15:42 past breakups. This game is completely different early on, and Seattle could have gotten out to a big lead, but Christian Gonzalez and his ability, those PbUs, the play downfield against Rashid Shahid, was outrageously great. I mean, he timed it perfectly, makes a play on the ball. That was an awesome play by Christian Gonzalez. And then you had towards the tail end of the first half, Jackson Smith and Jigba, Gonzalez almost comes down with that pick, right? I mean, that would have been a terrific play by Christian Gonzalez that hits him in the hands, but he's diving.
Starting point is 00:16:19 It's not an easy catch by any stretch. But those two PbUs, I thought Christian Gonzalez was really good. He gave up a third down late against Cooper Cup, which hurt. But for most of this game, Christian Gonzalez was a beast. And I thought he had mostly a terrific postseason. I mean, if you go into this game, And you told me that Jackson Smith and Jigba would have four catches for 27 yards. All of us would have taken that.
Starting point is 00:16:48 Every single Patriots fan would have taken that. Anybody who covers this team would say, wow, man, four catches for 27 yards. They shut down Jackson Smith and Jigba. Fantastic job. He was a non-factor for most of this game, pretty much all of this game. I also thought they got pressure on Sam Darnel. they consistently got pressure on Sam Donald. Now, I do give Sam Donald credit because he was crazy elusive.
Starting point is 00:17:16 And there were a number of times where the Patriots got that pass rush, they got their hands on Donald, but they couldn't bring them down. And I mentioned this last week, you know, I know some people, I won't mention any names, but there were some people going, oh, well, you know, Sam Donald doesn't really run. He's not super athletic. I had warned everybody the last couple of weeks. Sam Donald can extend plays.
Starting point is 00:17:36 He can run with the football. He will scramble and pick up yards. And I thought his ability to evade in the pocket, his pocket movement to get out of some really tough situations. There were three or four times where the Patriots were in the backfield could have brought him down. And he had a little bit more wiggle than they thought. And he had a big scramble to convert. So his ability to get away from that pressure, that hurt the. Patriots defense. They had them in spots for some big time negative plays, and he found a way.
Starting point is 00:18:10 I thought the biggest issue for the Patriots defense was their mistackles in the first half, especially. And we talked about Kenneth Walker, his ability to bounce it out. He loves bouncing it out. The Patriots, they did not hold the edge well enough. They did not contain the edge, which surprised me. I thought they would. And they missed a few key tackles. You know, they gave up a couple of those missed tackles. And now they're turning maybe 10-yard gain into 30-yard games. So, you know, I mean, Kenneth Walker, I'm 27 carries 135 yards.
Starting point is 00:18:42 I thought the Patriots would do a better job against Kenneth Walker. And, you know, he busted three or four big runs. And it was the mistackling and it was not containing the edge as he bounced out. Milton Williams was in the backfield three or four times tonight. Felt like he just couldn't make the play consistently. He was, he was beating the offensive line. He was beating the interior off. defensive line for Seattle and getting into the backfield, but he just had some tough times
Starting point is 00:19:09 finishing. You know, there's a time where he had Darnold dead in the tracks and he missed him. There was a time he busted through the line and he's back there, two yards, three yards behind the line of scrimmage, he's got a chance at Kenneth Walker. He just misses the tackle. But I thought, look, the Patriots defense, they played pretty much as well as you can play. Aside from the few big runs against Kenneth Walker, I mean, they did their job. And if the Patriots offense could have had any kind of momentum. If they could have moved the ball at all, this had the chance of being a good, close game.
Starting point is 00:19:42 But the Patriots offense stunk. That's the story of the game. Their offensive line stunk. The quarterback wasn't good. That's the story of this game. The Patriots did not lose this Super Bowl because of their defense. Far from it. I thought those guys played hard, and I thought they played well.
Starting point is 00:19:58 And I thought Zach Corr called a good game once again. It was a great run. But the margin for error was way too slim. We'll talk about that next. Starting point is 00:21:37 Like this was a spectacular run by this football team. It was a spectacular run that ends in misery. And tonight I thought was a reminder that the margin for error with this team is slim. It's just as simple as that. The Patriots needed to create turnovers or have a big special teams play to win this game. And I said that from the very beginning. I thought they would turn over Sam Donald a couple of times. And I thought that would be the difference.
Starting point is 00:22:07 but they just, they did not force the turnovers. And if you're not forcing turnovers with this roster, again, it's the margin for error is slim. Seattle is the better team. Seattle is the more talented team. I've said that from the very beginning of this thing. When we were looking at this game, I said Seattle is more talented. But I thought that the coaching staff of the Patriots,
Starting point is 00:22:28 the experience of that coaching staff, the defense, and what they could do would cause trouble for Donald. And I thought you'd see a couple of turnovers. And I thought that would build some moments. and give the confidence to that offense a little bit. They just never got there. They just never got there. And it's a reminder that this year, the Patriots,
Starting point is 00:22:47 we've talked about it all year long, they leaned on youth. It's a young football team. And a lot of their guys, a lot of their rookies, took a ton of snaps. I mentioned it in the second segment. I thought Craig Woodson was one of the best players on the field for the Patriots tonight. From what I saw in real time, thought he was terrific for the most part.
Starting point is 00:23:05 But they had a lean on youth. your quarterback is in his second season. He played young tonight. He played young. He made some of those mistakes. And he made some of those mistakes in the postseason, right? Throughout this entire run. He didn't make many against Denver, but he made mistakes against the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:23:26 He made mistakes against the Texans. And he made some mistakes tonight. And he forced some things. Young quarterback. Your young side of the offensive line. We talked about this deep dive preview. Reese had this note all week long he was pounding it. The Patriots are the first team in the Super Bowl to have multiple rookie starting offensive linemen. And you saw it. Jared Wilson got handled
Starting point is 00:23:49 tonight. Will Campbell got handled tonight. Those guys got trucked in the first half especially. So your youth, they got beat up tonight, man. They got beat up. And you watch this game and you remember, this is a team that had to rely on a lot of young guys who had never. never been there before. And it's not an excuse. I'm not excusing what happened tonight. They got their tookus handed to them offensively. I've talked about it from the beginning. This is not excuse making. But when you have to rely on rookies in big, big spots and you're going to rely on a young quarterback in big, big spots, and you're not able to run the football. I mean, Sam Donald, it's not like Sam Donald lit the world on fire tonight. Okay. Like this game was not won because Sam Donald, he completed 50% of his passes and threw for 2002. yards. His quarterback rating was under 75. His pass rating under 75. But he had a run game.
Starting point is 00:24:44 Kenneth Walker gave him a boost. Their defense gave them good field position. They created turnovers. They got a scoop and score. And so you had to rely on Drake May in this young offensive line. And it just wasn't good enough. It was not good enough. Really, the entire postseason, they were able to get away with it because they did turn the football over. They caused turnovers from C.J. Stroud. And they did a better. job against the run game. But when you're looking at tonight, it wasn't the case. And so we just have to remember that this team, they're not super deep. And it's not like they're incredibly talented. They've got talent in a number of spots. But I don't think anybody
Starting point is 00:25:27 looking at these rosters would say the Patriots had more talent. I don't think that's, I don't think that's a reasonable thing to say. I don't even think that's a debate. And you've got nothing from special teams. And you needed something, right? You needed Marcus Jones to pop a punt return. And he pops one return and what happens. Del Pettis gets penalized. A legal block in the back.
Starting point is 00:25:49 And Seattle, meanwhile, they're special teams. We told you, DBOA, second best team in football and special teams. Michael Dixon, all pro punter. He's pinning the Patriots all night long inside the 10. Kicker goes perfect, five for five. And so, you know, all the little extra stuff Seattle got. Seattle get the extra stuff. They beat the bag out of the Patriots offensive line.
Starting point is 00:26:10 They rattled Drake May, but then they got the other things going, right? Kicker was great. The punting, the operation was great. They created the turnovers. Patriots have wide receivers that can't consistently separate. They just don't have guys that can consistently separate. Pop Douglas, but you're afraid about playing him because of his size, his role in the run game.
Starting point is 00:26:35 We've talked about that all year long. Stefan Diggs at times getting bracketed. He doesn't really beat coverage consistently if you've got really good corners. He's more of a two receiver at this point. His career had a fantastic season, but it is what it is. Mack Hollins is not a great separator. Kyle Williams, I do think, could get there, but he's still wet behind the ears. And I don't think he was ready to take over in any sense of the imagination.
Starting point is 00:27:00 So, you know, your wide receivers just you're not consistently separating. and Seattle had the ability to get after your offensive line with just four pass rushers. They didn't have to blitz a lot. And they're beating your offensive line with four pass rushers. They're playing coverage behind that four-man pass rush. And they're really good against a quick game. We talked about all this. None of this was a surprise to the length of the offensive line getting beat the way they got beat.
Starting point is 00:27:28 I would say that was more of a surprise. But I did not think the Patriots offense was going to be very good in this game. This was a very difficult defense to go against, given what the Patriots tried to do. I was surprised the Patriots didn't put more six offensive linemen out there. I was surprised that Josh McDaniels did not spread the defense out a little bit more. I was surprised they didn't go empty. There were some things. I'm surprised they didn't try to get Trayvion Henderson into space more often.
Starting point is 00:27:56 There were some things that I think they left it on the field, but I think they were petrified of their offensive line. And I think they just were looking at their quarterback and said, he's a little bit rattled here, if not a lot rattled. And this game is a reminder that we have plenty to discuss for this offseason. I mean, we're about a month away from free agency. This thing's going to turn around quickly. And I've said it from the very beginning.
Starting point is 00:28:20 A lot of these free agent signings that worked out this year, a lot of those guys were Band-Aids. Morgan Moses 34, Robert Spillane, Carlton Davis, getting close to 30 years old. a lot of those free agent signings that that did a great job for this team and got you to the Super Bowl, a lot of those guys are going to age out the next 12 to 18 months. So I think this is going to be a very busy offseason. We're going to be all over it.
Starting point is 00:28:44 How do you handle Will Campbell? How do you handle Jared Wilson? We'll get into that this week. Do you go into 2026 with Will Campbell as your left tackle? Do you go into 2026 with Jared Wilson as your left guard? Do you move both guys inside? Do you put Wilson back at? center. Do you put Will Campbell at left guard? These are the conversations we're going to have to have.
Starting point is 00:29:05 These are the conversations we've got to have. And I am obviously not happy whatsoever that they lost this football game. And I am just incredibly disappointed that the offense got trounced the way they did. And I don't believe in house money when you get to the Super Bowl. You win or you go home. You get this far. You got to win the title. And they got to. blasted. Their offense got blasted tonight. But we can say what a run. It was a fantastic run that was never expected. I had this team winning nine games this year. I thought we'd all be happy to talk about a team that was even competitive to maybe even get to the playoffs. But they got to the Super Bowl and it ended with misery. But they've got more than $40 million in cap space.
Starting point is 00:30:00 They've got 11 or 12 draft picks, and they've got a lot of big decisions to make, and we're going to be all over it. That wraps up this edition of Lockdown Patriots.
