bowl weekend without the new england patriots just seems a little off but even though your
favorite team from foxborough is not suiting up for this one,
this still has the makings of an instant classic.
I, for one, can't wait to watch Super Bowl LIV.
The NFC champion Los Angeles Rams taking on the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.
And the Rams come in with a star-studded lineup on both sides of the ball.
The Bengals, however, didn't have a whole lot of preseason hype as being Super Bowl contenders, but quarterback Joe Burrow in just his second season has this team
believing. Solid football played by both teams on both sides of the ball. Again, this one has a
great chance of being a great game. And even though locked on Patriots can't have boots on
the ground in Los Angeles this week, there is no shortage of former NFL players, NFL analysts,
all willing to provide their insight on the type of game that we can see.
Well, here on Locked On Patriots today, we have a special treat for you.
Because not only is our guest one of the best and most insightful analysts
that you'll find in the NFL or any walk of professional football,
he's also someone that wore the uniform of the Cincinnati Bengals
the last time this team took the field for the Super Bowl.
A proud member of the 1988 AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals,
safety Solomon Wilcots joins me on the program today,
and Solomon will lend his wisdom and counsel as only he can
with relation to Super
Bowl 56. What is it like this week for the Cincinnati Bengals? How much pride does it
fill him with to see his former team doing well? And also, what is his prediction this week?
Solomon will also be joined by a very special guest, Dr. Michael Banfee, team physician and
orthopedic specialist for the Los Angeles Dodgers and and of course, the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams.
A subject that's near and dear to both Solomon and Dr. Banfie's heart
is conditioning, especially keeping athletes healthy and mobile.
They'll be sharing their great insight on that subject.
And last but certainly not least, folks,
we haven't forgotten that this is Locked On Patriots.
Solomon is a student of all 32 NFL teams,
and he'll give us his insight on the New England Patriots prospects for 2022, as well as his
thoughts on the retirement of the GOAT himself, Mr. Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr.
Folks, an action-packed agenda to get to today, tons to talk about on the pod, so without
much further ado, sit back, relax, and enjoy the
wisdom and counsel of former Cincinnati Bengals safety, as well as now being the host of Sirius
XM NFL's radio opening drive, the great Solomon Wilcox, joined by Los Angeles Rams team physician
Dr. Michael Banfee, when this Tuesday episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast continues.

Patriots fans, NFL fans, football fans in all walks of life.
My guest today is a man known to all of you for his days on the gridiron as a safety for the Cincinnati Bengals, who last I checked, had a game to play this weekend.
He knows a thing or two about this game as he was a member
of the 1988 AFC Championship Bengals squad. He is also one of the most insightful analysts in the
world of professional football, providing expert insight for NBC, ESPN, CBS, Pro Football Focus,
that's just to name a few. He is currently the host of Sirius XM NFL's radio opening drive. It is my honor to welcome
Solomon Wilcox to the pod today. Solomon, thank you so much for joining me here today on Locked
On Patriots. Oh, Mike. Hey, thank you for having me. I appreciate that warm introduction. And
after listening, I was wondering who you were talking about. I was like, that couldn't be me. All well-deserved and then some.
Solomon, I've been a fan of yours both on and off the field for a number of years,
what you did on the gridiron and also what you've done in the world of sports media
and NFL media particularly.
So this is an honor for me to have you join me today, and I definitely appreciate it.
But we are not alone today on the pod folks.
I would also like to point out that Solomon you are joined here today by Dr. Michael Banfee,
physician for both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the NFL champion, excuse me the NFC champion
Los Angeles Rams. Obviously health and conditioning is key to the success of all athletes and Dr.
Banfee joins you Solomon today to talk about something that is very important to the both of you.
Obviously, that conditioning is important for athletes, but really it's important for all of life.
And Dr. Banfield, Solomon, I know you guys are eager to share some of that insight on this very subject with our listeners.
I'm honored to provide the platform for you to do
so. Please, by all means, enlighten us on the treatment options and the treatment information
you'd like to share with us today. Well, okay, you're right. I'm with Dr. Banfield. He serves as
a orthopedic physician with the Los Angeles Rams, and he can tell you more about the Macy procedure,
which is to repair cartilage damage in the knee.
So with that said, I'll turn it over to the expert, Dr. Bansby.
Thank you, Solomon.
And thanks, Mike.
And I really appreciate that Freudian slip you have where you said the Los Angeles Rams are going to be the NFL champions.
I don't think Solomon appreciated that too much.
That's right.
What we're talking about is injuries to the knee cartilage.
When people start having locking and catching symptoms in their knees, frequent swelling of their knee,
what that can be is damage to the cartilage surface that covers the bone.
So we have this smooth, glossy surface called articular cartilage that covers the bone.
And just like the meniscus pads, people have heard that that structure can get damaged.
And for the longest time, you know, this was a structure that didn't heal.
And it would get worse and worse and worse.
You know, people would have, you know, what they call their bum knee.
And then all of a sudden, they have bone-on-bone arthritis.
But now with this technology called Macy, we're able to actually take the patient's own cells, grow those cells, and then re-implant them into the knee.
And what it does is it gives a perfect articular surface once again.
It really restores that surface so that the player, the professional athlete, the high-level collegiate athlete,
and the weekend warrior can all get back to the activities that they want to do.
Excellent. And really, really great insight and some of the work that is done in the
world of sports medicine is truly remarkable when you think about the longevity of careers
nowadays and the things that physicians like you, Dr. Banfield, are doing to try to help not only
elongate careers but help to make sure that athletes enjoy solid mobility and really a good
quality of life throughout their entire life, not just while they're on the football field, is truly remarkable.
And I know this was something that was very important and very, you know, much on the minds of all of our listeners as well.
Obviously, some of our highest rated shows here on Locked On Patriots are shows regarding player injuries and, you know, what it means for their future.
So that is excellent insight.
And I also understand from doing my background research and my homework that you also happen
to have an affinity for the team that I cover.
After all, this is Locked On Patriots.
We're going to talk a little about New England Patriots today.
So, Dr. Banfield, if you'd like to, definitely please stick around for the conversation that Solomon and I are going to have with regard to the Super Bowl, because when you talk Super Bowl, New England Patriots just find their. My Freudian slip and mea culpa aside,
the NFL championship, folks, has yet to be decided.
The Cincinnati Bengals, the AFC champions,
the Los Angeles Rams, the NFC champions,
and these two teams are set for what I believe
is going to be a great game coming up this Sunday.
Solomon, you having played for the Bengals,
you have firsthand knowled
like this really means to
this city. Um, Dr Banff,
up on this. We remember t
in 2001 and how much that
a city that had no much s
up until that point, it r
and really brought it bac that in Cincinnati and so many people are excited
to see the Cincinnati Bengals doing well there is some comparisons believe it or not that this
Bengals team is drawing to the New England Patriots at least in this area Solomon I don't
know about nationally but a lot of Patriots fans patriots fans ar of what the patriots did
with a second year quarte
all his own smart coachin
both sides of the ball. Y
type of environment, you
Cincinnati, you know the
know what it means to ha
the way Cincinnati has be
in your opinion, what type of ride are the Bengals on,
and how much pride does it fill you with to see Cincinnati doing so well?
Yeah, it's a team that has struggled for a long time,
a lot of losing seasons since we went to the Super Bowl
as part of that 1988 team in Cincinnati.
So you have sort of a fan base.
It's a long-suffering fan base in Cincinnati.
And then, you know, they had Carson Palmer,
who was a really good quarterback.
I just thought the world of Carson.
Then they had Andy Dalton.
They were surrounded by some good players.
So you saw teams get to the playoffs but then would lose.
You know, since we last won our last playoff game in Cincinnati,
they had been to the playoffs seven times, lost seven in a row.
Now Joe Burrow shows up.
They go to the playoffs, and now they're playing in a Super Bowl.
So, you know, it's been long-suffering.
But since Joe Burrow showed up,
things have happened rather quickly. And now he stands to become the first quarterback in NFL
history to win a Heisman Trophy, a national championship, and now a Super Bowl. Just one
game away from accomplishing that feat. So you might say happy days are here again in the Queen
City of Cincinnati, and now
you just hope they last. But first, it starts with just winning this one game. Absolutely, and I'm so
glad you mentioned with winning this one game, because if there's one thing New England fans
know from their coach's mantra that's really been instilled in the region up here, it's one game at
a time. And that's exactly how the Cincinnati Bengals are going to approach this game. The Los Angeles Rams as well. This game looks to be an
exciting one. There's a lot of parallels here. You have two teams with potentially explosive
offenses, Solomon, two defenses that are capable of winning the game in their own right, two coaches
who know each other very well. Again, I think this has the makings for a very good game on Sunday.
I, for one, can't wait to watch this.
In your estimation, what type of action should we expect
or can we expect on the field when these two teams get set for action
at SoFi Stadium?
Yeah, you're right.
Both coaches are closely related.
Zach Taylor served under Sean McVay, previous as a quarterback coach,
then offensive coordinator, hired by the Cincinnati Bengals.
After that 2018 Super Bowl loss to the Patriots,
Zach Taylor showed up in Cincinnati, suffered through some tough seasons.
First two years, only four wins.
And this year in his third season has exploded.
So, listen, I think both guys are
prideful guys. They want to win the game, but they want their offenses to operate at a high level.
They've got quarterbacks who they trust. And anytime you have a coach who are good play callers
like Sean McVay and Zach Taylor and a quarterback you could trust, they're going to turn it loose.
They're going to open up the playbook.
They're going to give them a few things that they can go out
and have fun with.
And that's why I think you're going to see a shootout.
I think both teams will score somewhere in and around 30 points.
And the team that turns the ball over the least
and protects the football the best,
that's probably going to be the team that wins it.
Yeah, I agree with you without any question.
And look, when you have two teams that have explosive players on both sides of the ball,
and Cincinnati and Los Angeles both have those types of squads,
it really usually does come down to the team that protects the football,
makes the plays when needed, and does the little things it takes to win.
I keep bringing it back to the Patriots simply because it's Pidlotton Patriots.
It's our fan base's definite focus, but that's the type of football that we saw the New England Patriots play up here
for two decades under Bill Belichick and doing the little things it takes to win.
And again, I think that's one of the reasons why so many people in this area are seeing
some of the comparisons between the Patriots and this Bengals team, because they're doing
the things that it takes to gain victory.
And also, I don't want to make it seem like this is all Bengal country up here in New
England, because Sonny Michel is running the ball effectively in Los Angeles as well.
And Sonny did a great job up here for New England for a number of years.
And we're happy to see him be able to get there as well. And Sony did a great job up here for New England for a number of years.
And we're happy to see him be able to get there as well.

Rockauto.com.
Solomon, this is Locked On Patriots.
And as much as the game this weekend is definitely a focus, and we'll get to your game prediction
in just a moment, I did want to pick your brain a
little on some of the Patriots news that is here as well, because again, not just knowing what you
did on the football field, but also your ability as an analyst, in my opinion, is second to none.
And I know you follow all 32 teams closely. Right now, the New England Patriots finished the season 10-8 in 2021, earning a playoff berth.
That's after a one-year absence.
Mack Jones leading this team as a rookie.
Patriots had a lot of new faces in terms of free agents and in rookies this year.
That trend may continue into 2022, although I think they're a little more cap strapped this year than they were last year.
But there's also going to be some nuances with this team that are going to be different with new coaches.
Obviously, Josh McDaniels going off and being now the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
In the analysis that you did for the NFL this year, Solomon, what was your takeaway from the New England Patriots season? Do you think this team has the ability to move forward in 2022, potentially moving into a contender spot, or are they still a cut away
from some of the big dogs in the AFC, like the Cincinnati Bengals?
Well, no, I think Bill Belichick's going to always build a team that's fundamentally sound,
that's physically tough, that's not going to beat themselves. However, they have skewed more on the conservative side of not going out and acquiring over-the-top
talent.
You go back to the days of Tom Brady.
Remember when they went out and got a Randy Moss and a Wes Welker and a Dante Stalwood?
That was a significant out-of-the-box move that was really
sort of contrary to what most of us had come to expect from Coach Belichick. But they were
leveraging everything they had to try to win a championship. They went undefeated and then lost
in the Super Bowl, but it wasn't from a lack of trying. And I can't tell you that I've seen them do that since.
Yeah.
Last year they spent more money than we've ever seen them spend during the
off season in free agency.
I'm going out and getting some really good players,
but point to me one guy that was significant,
that was listed maybe top five at their position.
You can't point to one guy.
Yes, Nelson Aguilar, good player.
Hunter Henry, really good player.
But they were good signings, okay, to help upgrade the roster.
But I think we all can say that they weren't the superstar blockbuster moves
that you see maybe the Rams making, like when you went out and got a Matthew Stafford or Vaughn Miller or an Odell Beckham Jr.
Those these are guys who are top five in the league at their position. Right.
So as good as the Patriots are, because I think they're as well coached as any team in the NFL. And I think Coach Belichick maybe went outside of his comfort zone and saying,
look, if we wait to build this through the draft, it could take forever.
And they went out and got a really good quarterback in Mack Jones,
who I think they're grooming and coaching up.
Well, I think it's going to be ready.
But I think we saw it in games against the Buffalo Bills, right? The Bills have really good talent,
was able to almost outclass the Patriots in that playoff game.
And so I think the Patriots need to add more.
And if you would ask me, what does more look like?
I think they have a good foundation of talent.
They're one of the best coach teams in the NFL.
And now you have to be more aggressive and not just get good players.
You got to start to get great players because that's the way rosters are being
built now in the national football league.
He had the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that already had a good roster and kept
doubling down on the talent they were bringing in.
Now you see the Rams doing it.
And that's what it's going to take to win in today's NFL.
Yeah, well said. Well, well said.
And I think you endeared yourself to a lot of my listeners here on Locked On Patriots
by saying that the nucleus is there, but more needs to be done.
And that's something I hear so much from my listening base.
And again, like I said, I agree with you,
and I think you'll find a lot of my listeners agreeing with you as well. Solomon, before we get to your Super Bowl prediction, you did invoke the name of Tom Brady. And I say that reverently. He is still revered here in New England for the two decades that he spent providing excellence to this franchise and to this region, really. And Tom will always go down as one of the more beloved athletes ever to grace a professional
field or professional court in Boston sports.
Just your takeaways of Tom Brady's career, having a chance to have analyzed him, gotten
a chance to have covered him over the years.
What are your lasting memories on Tom Brady?
Here's the guy that, yeah, and having covered him and come to New England,
I sat in many production meetings with him.
First, the thing that comes to mind is just
a model of humility, a tremendous leader.
He's a servant leader.
And what I mean by that is he knows that
if he helps others to be good, that other people are going to help him to be great.
He knows that as a quarterback, he's going to need everyone's help to do his job at a very high level.
So he's willing to go out and help others.
He understands what it means to pull people together and give them what they want
and provide leadership for everyone in that locker room.
And he knew that that was what was required to win championships.
So you could see him at the end of a Super Bowl flipping the keys of a car,
right, over to James White and saying, no, this is yours.
Malcolm Butler, after getting the interception on Russell Wilson.
You know what? I don't deserve this. You deserve that.
I mean, that's that's top level thinking.
That's what we call a high level of emotional intelligence.
Tom Brady had it all. He checked every single box.
Now, he didn't arrive that way.
I like to believe that the atmosphere and the environment
there in New England under Coach Belichick allowed him to grow into becoming the leader
and the quarterback that he ultimately became. Great champion, just a first-class individual,
and I think he has changed the model for what we expect in NFL quarterbacks from here on out.
The measuring stick is Tom Brady.
Not many people are going to measure up, but he's left his mark on this league, and we're going to remember him for a very long time.
Absolutely, and he'll be remembered well up here for a number of years as well.
And the insight that you provide, having sat, like you said, in productions meeting with Tom
and having covered him and seeing him and knowing what it takes to succeed on the field at this level,
at the highest level, is truly great insight. And Solomon, I thank you for sharing your candid
thoughts today on Tom Brady. I thank you for sharing your thoughts on the New England Patriots.
And it is going to be interesting that a Super Bowl game will be played without Tom Brady involved somehow.
It doesn't happen often or it hasn't happened often lately, but that will take place this Sunday.
And that being said, we've arrived at the moment of truth.
I don't want to paint you into a corner because I won't do that.
If you're comfortable giving a Super Bowl prediction, we'd love to have it.
If not, what are you looking for?
What are your takeaways that you're looking to see
on the field uh this weekend um in super bowl 56 well mike you know i'm sitting here with dr banshee
he's my teammate because we're telling the story of macy but he's a ram guy i'm a cincinnati bingos
guy now i'm born and raised in los angeles so i'm a little bit torn but the bangles are the team that
drafted me so i've gotta you know i've got to roll with the Cincinnati Bengals.
So this is kind of a win-win for me.
If a team of my youth wins, then I'll be happy.
But clearly, I'm pulling for the Cincinnati Bengals in this game.
I believe in Joe Burrow.
I don't care how much the Bengals get down on the scoreboard.
We believe he's the guy that can bring us back.
I know this.
If the Rams get behind on scoreboard,
there's going to be a lot of nervous Nellies at SoFi Stadium.
They're not used to playing from behind.
So that's what I'm predicting, that first team to 30 wins.
It's going to take 30 points to beat the Rams,
but I think we can get there. So I'll give you a 30 to 30 wins. It's going to take 30 points to beat the Rams, but I think we can get there.
So I'll give you a 30 to 27 score.
Cincinnati Bengals taking home the Vince Lombardi trophy.
How about that?
Excellent.
I love it.
Now, Dr. Banfield, I don't want to put you on the spot.
Would you like to rebut that?
You can get a prediction in here if you'd like.
And if you want to just say I'm looking forward to a good game,
I won't hold it against you.
Well, I'm a much better orthopedic surgeon than I am NFL analyst.
However, from what I've seen,
I think we have a very similar coaching style amongst the two teams.
I think you have pretty similar offenses as well,
with regard to quarterbacks that have good skills, good arms,
but we got the defense, so we're taking it.
The hometown guy going with his squad. You can't fault a man for that. Gentlemen, this has been a
true honor for me to speak to the both of you today with regard to the information that you've
provided and Solomon, of course, the insight that you've been able to provide.
Dr. Banfee, the insight that you've been able to provide
when it comes to the area of orthopedics and sports medicine.
Gentlemen, before I let you go today,
please, by all means, let our listeners know
where they can find you, interact with you,
anything that you have coming down the pike
that you'd like to share with the listeners of Locked On Patriots.
Just with regard to the Macy procedure that we had talked about earlier,
there's a great website that your listeners can go to, www.macy.com.
Barrisol is the company that supports them.
They're actually right down the street from you guys in the Boston area.
But the Macy website will give all sorts of information to your listeners,
as well as provide them doctors that provide that particular procedure in their area as well.
Well, that's it.
You know, we're here on behalf of Veracel and to talk about the Macy procedure.
And I think, you know, Dr. Banfield has really spelled it out.
If you have any concerns, remember, it's an autologous science.
We use the patient's own cells to help with
recovery of cartilage repair um and so go to the website at www.macy.com m-a-c-i.com and mike we
thank you for having us today oh the pleasure and the honor is all mine cincinnati bengals great
solomon wilcox joining me today on the pod as well as
NFL analyst extraordinaire. Be sure to check out Sirius XM NFL's radio opening drive with Solomon.
Definitely, it's a great listen. One of my favorites. You won't be disappointed. And
definitely please check out the website. Dr. Michael Banfield doing great work in the area
of orthopedics and sports medicine. Gentlemen, thanks for taking the time out today.
Enjoy Super Bowl 56.
All the best, Mike.
