Pats fans, as you can see, it is hashtag locked on Murph Monday. And that means the legend himself is going to hop in here in just a moment. But first, folks, today's episode is brought to you by BetOnline. BetOnline has you covered this season with more props, more odds, and more lines than ever before.
Starting point is 00:01:58 BetOnline, where the game starts. Pats fans, it would not be two weeks into Patriots training camp unless the spin zone was pushing that human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mess hysteria narrative when it comes to Mac Jones, Matt Patricia, Bill Belichick, and your New England Patriots offense. Oh, it's happening, folks. You saw all the tweets, everything going on all over the weekend, all the past week. But is it really necessary?
Starting point is 00:02:29 Well, joining me here today on Locked on Patriots is truly one of our favorites here on the podcast and someone who will come on to tell you his opinion and set that record straight. The only guest, folks, with his very own branded hashtag. It is hashtag Locked on Murph Monday. And that means the legendary Connor Murphy, Fisto himself. Thomas Murphy of E2GSports.com is here. Thank you for coming to me in friendship. Thank you for joining me today, Don Murph. Always a pleasure, Michael.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Always a pleasure. And especially when you come on after Mark Schofield. It's a tough act to follow, but someone's going to do it. You know, if there's anybody that can, my friend, you definitely, definitely fill that bill. We're happy to have you here on a Monday. You've got your very own branded hashtag for a reason there, bud. Okay, thank you. I appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Before we get started today, I want to, you know, a huge shout out to Richard Seymour, who entered the Hall of Fame this year. It's about damn time. Some of these guys from the early years of the first Patriots dynasty are getting their gold jackets. Richard is the second one in now. And just a beautiful speech yesterday, a beautiful day in Canton. And I'm sorry I couldn't, I wasn't there. Absolutely. I think a lot of us were. Robert Kraft was in attendance. And of course, folks, if you haven't had the opportunity, special edition of Locked On Patriots dropped earlier.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Definitely check that out. My thoughts on Richard Seymour, his illustrious career in New England, his legacy, and what he had to say in that induction speech really speaks volumes to the type of man, the type of character that Richard Seymour carries, truly one of the all-time greats. And he takes his rightful place in Canton. The red jacket, the gold jacket, they both look good on him. You know, he can have his choice.
Starting point is 00:04:19 But when he's in Foxborough, it'd be nice to see him wearing red. Mixing the red every now and then, Richard. But no, all kidding aside, Big Say, tip my cap to you. Well done on an amazing career. And again, definitely check that special edition of Locked On Patriots out after you've listened to the musings of my good friend Murph. And Murph, we knew that when Bill Belichick had, as the legendary Jim Ross would say, the unmitigated gall to begin the season without naming an offensive coordinator, my friend,
Starting point is 00:04:52 we knew the criticism of the offense was going to be in full force, especially when it comes to play calling. Now, 10 practices into training camp, it's like matt patricia will get the nod at least at first and that may be the source of some of the tension in patriots land and we're going to get to that in just a moment but murph it's been argued by me the defense that this is not catastrophic having matt patricia installed as the play caller with bill Belichick, Joe Judge, Nick Cayley, all having input, Brian Hoyer, Mac Jones. Obviously, there's some cooks in the kitchen. There are some spoons in the sauce pot, but it's ultimately being stirred right now by Matt Patricia. And even though I'm arguing that it's not catastrophic, that's not what they would
Starting point is 00:05:41 have you believe. So let's bring it back to reality as my spirit character vincent laguardia gambini would say bud does the defense's case hold water that's the question i asked you today no the defense's case does not hold water you have no idea how good matt patricia is going to be at job. What they're focusing on right now is the idiot round men up front who don't have Dante Skarnecchia telling them what to do and how to do it. And that's the issue. My issue is with Matt Patricia coaching the offensive line here. It is just not – it's a completely different animal than coaching defense. You can, Matt Patricia is smart enough to stand there with the menu at the side of the
Starting point is 00:06:34 lines and look and see the defense that he's going up against. He's been studying it all week and where their weaknesses are. The problem is that the thing that everybody's seeing is the fact that Bill is installing a completely new offense here and he's doing it on the fly with a bunch of new coaches that, that who's whom some are out of place. And, and that that's, that's really the bottom line is the fact that this offensive line has not come together. This is, while this is not an intricate offense, this is an offense set up for immediate dividends.
Starting point is 00:07:17 It's an offense that you don't have to make any, if all or any audibles at the line of scrimmage. It's difficult to get down for the guys that are completely changing the way that they have blocked for their entire life. Well, that's a good point. I think that's a very, very good point. And it leads me into another question that I'll ask of you in just a moment. But ultimately, you mentioned the new offense on the fly, and we keep hearing the term zone run, zone read offense, utilizing athletic young linemen to be able to block for the running game. Not sure outside of Cole Strange how much athleticism there truly is on this line. It's a lot of big guys, a lot of guys that know how to get into position, hold their ground, play their position very well, but you have to have the personnel in order to go with it. And I think that lends itself into some of the uncertainty here. People are wondering, you know, media members are wondering
Starting point is 00:08:18 out loud, but I think a lot of fans quietly are wondering, why now? Why do you go and make this jump at this structure when Josh Mc mcdaniels has moved on um where you know maybe it's a little bit of the sign of the times i guess bill belichick adapting to the pro the modern type of game but my my assessment on this is that i i'm not sure if we would be seeing this type of installation or this type of overt installation if Josh had signed on the dotted line to remain here for one more year and was not in Las Vegas do you think that holds any water or do you think this is simply just Bill adapting to what he needs to do no without a doubt Josh is a creature of habit um he liked the offense that the the Earhart
Starting point is 00:09:01 bastardized Earhart offense that he's been running here for years. He is running that out in LA, in Las Vegas. Sorry. God, I'm sorry. Just stop moving. It all blends together out there in the West. It really does, man. It really does.
Starting point is 00:09:17 No, he would have pushed back on this simply because he doesn't like the offense. He's seen how to stop this offense. He's seen Bill stop this offense. And he would take a look at this offensive line and maybe say, this is not the way to go, Bill. And I know a lot of you out there don't want to hear this, but it might not be the way to go. We don't know yet.
Starting point is 00:09:41 These guys up front have got to get on the same page. They have got to get on the right page, back things up a bit. And the reason this is happening is not really because of the of the skill set of the offensive line and whether or not it fits. Bill is looking at the skill set of his quarterback and for lack of a better word the weapons that surround him um the running back core is going to thrive in this offense if it if it uh comes together and you know people take the right steps and move in the right direction and actually know what they're doing if they're able to look at one another up and down the line and say, okay, I see it. Let's go attack it. This running back core is going to love running behind
Starting point is 00:10:33 this scheme. And more importantly, the tight ends and the wide outs are going to be able to do what they do best, catch the ball, and get yards after catch. That's what this offense is set up for, is the guys on the outside and busting up the seams and getting yards after the catch. That's what's going to happen. Absolutely. And in theory, it does. It's promising.
Starting point is 00:10:58 And you can understand in concept, conceptually, folks, why the Patriots would want to move to this type of an offense because it does suit some of the personnel that they have. At the skill position, want to move to this type of an offense because it does suit some of the personnel that they have at the skill position you just have to be sure that the guys doing the blocking are doing their job and right now that seems to be the point of contention but as much as the offensive line is important to this you need a quarterback capable of handling those waters and murph and i have gone on record several times where we believe mac jones to be that guy.
Starting point is 00:11:26 But all over the weekend, you're starting to see tweets pop up all over the place that maybe Mac is a little uncertain. Maybe a little uncomfortable. Well, I think there's an awful lot of miscommunication. And I think a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to what people are saying about Mac in camp. And the opinion that's being put out there in the media narrative. And Murph and I are going to discuss that in just a moment when this episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast continues. But first, folks, level with me. There's all been times in our lives, situations arise at some point when we were a little

Starting point is 00:13:20 are on quarterback Mac Jones and after what i thought to be a pretty solid mini camp and a pretty good start to training camp max comfort and control in this new offense that we described in the previous segment is being called into question now the usual suspects are in full force you know they're out in droves we're not going to name any names here folks but you know you can put the pieces together. But over the weekend, he said it, not me. But over the weekend, Mike Giardi of the NFL Network, someone who you and I both hold in the highest regard, had some observations of his own on Mac Jones. And to be fair, I think some of it was taken out of context in terms of what Mike was trying
Starting point is 00:14:03 to get across and the opinion that he was trying to put out there. Because I think Mike made a very valid point over the weekend, and I think it got lost in translation. Everyone thinks that Mike was criticizing Mack, and that's not what he's doing here, folks. What Mike did, and I'm reading his first tweet verbatim right now. Mack Jones had some moments of uncertainty a year ago in training camp, but not nearly as many as you would expect for a rookie. This summer, far more. Yes, it is early August.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Yes, there's still time. However, the install started back in the spring, and you'd like to see more comfort and success. Everyone took that to Mac is not capable. Oh, I thought Mac looked good in pre in training camp and in mini camp. Everybody's downing Mac. And that's not what my don't believe. What's first of all, I don't want to put any words in anybody's mouth. And I think you know, Mike is also
Starting point is 00:14:56 acknowledging that yeah, Mac does deserve some, you know, you know, the responsibilities there that then he needs to be better. But ultimately, what I think this is an indictment on more is the ability of the coaching staff the players on the field to work together blend together and really form a cohesive unit we haven't seen that happen yet and the fact that we are looking at an install time that started back in the spring is starting to cause maybe a little uneasiness out there definitely not a reason to to get, you know, to, you know, take down the house, folks. But at the same time, you'd like to see a little more cohesion.
Starting point is 00:15:33 Murph, when you hear reports like this, knowing what you know coming out of camp, knowing what you know about Mac and the offense, how concerned should be Patriots fans about reports like this? Not at all. I told you, I told you all right here three weeks ago and got so much static that it was unreal that Mac was not going to live up to the hype.
Starting point is 00:15:52 And that was the hype that, that has come along from watching him throw against air with his little, you know, his posses, he's getting together with the receivers groups all year long. The season that he had last year, we talked here a great deal at who, who would, who would overachieve and who would underachieve this year in, in training camp. And it, I, I don't want to say that I was, no, I was right. I told you Mac was going to underachieve as,
Starting point is 00:16:24 and that was because of the expectations that were put onto him. And not everybody was looking at this drastic, radical change. I didn't even see this radical of a change. I thought these concepts were going to be implemented and part of the game plan. I didn't think that Bill was going to completely go in this direction as quickly as he has. And it's taken time for Mack to completely switch off everything that he'd been doing over the last year and get into the – in the long term, if this works, it's going to end up being to his benefit. Just give the guy some time.
Starting point is 00:17:01 I really think that's all Mike is talking about, that this is not the easiest system to implement, especially for a quarterback once you have been working in a certain direction. The other thing goes, you know, when did Mack know that this switch was going to take place? And should he have been here? Should he have been here studying and getting on the same page with the coaches much earlier instead of going out there and team bonding with his wide receivers? Yeah, I think that's a fair point. And again, that's where we draw back to quarterback responsibility, coach responsibility, and player responsibility. And look, Mike did clarify and went on to further tweet that this is not all on mac folks this is you know blocking has been poor and you know there's there are you know evidence uh
Starting point is 00:17:50 you know to say that the patriots have not been able to get their running game on track for a offense last year that relied heavily on being able to have a supportive running game from damian harris from remondre stevenson from brand Brandon Bolden they didn't have that so far in training camp and you're starting to see that and you know and it's and it's really it's developing difficulty because even though they're essentially playing themselves right now folks that defense is smelling blood in the water they're able to take away the pass catching options people are going coming exactly and people are going crazy Devontae Parker is not getting open what's's the matter? He's not getting separation. He's not getting the opportunity to get separation because the defense is reading him every step of the way and he's not able to juke and get
Starting point is 00:18:32 free. His opportunities, his wheelhouse with Devontae Parker is much more about yards after the catch and making contested catches rather than getting separation. So let's make that distinction very clear about Devontae Parker. He's not a receiver that's going to get and separate from his defender. He's never has been. That's not what his strengths really play to. Can he do it at times? Absolutely. But it's not something his game is predicated on. So he's a receiver that uses his body to get into the right position, catch the ball, then do his dirty work after that. Right. Exactly. That's what you people need to take a step back, folks. Wait until the joint practices come up and see how that's going.
Starting point is 00:19:16 Wait until the first or second preseason game and see how that's going. For God's sakes, wait until October. Okay. Absolutely. This is, this is a drastic radical change for an offense that, that has, has succeeded in a way that few others have over the past 20 years. And a lot of the guys that are on this offensive line, whether they want to admit it or not hate change, they hate it. They hate change. We're round whether they want to admit it or not, hate change. They hate it. They hate change. We're round.
Starting point is 00:19:47 We want to know where the donuts are at every freaking point. We want to know exactly where to go and exactly what to do. And when we've had this in our head for years, and this is a bunch of veterans, you know, there's a couple of young guys here, but there are a bunch of veterans that have been blocking in a certain way. We don't dig it. We do not dig change. To us, change is not good. Change is a salad instead of an extra meatball. We don't dig that.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Absolutely. And that's a very, very good point about especially about linemen who tend to be very routine in the way that they they go about their business. It is something different and it will continue to be something different. But I like the point that you made in that it's really very difficult to judge this unit before we've seen them in any type of meaningful action, meaning joint practices, meaning preseason game, which, by the way, folks, we happen to have one scheduled for this coming Thursday. You're New England Patriots and the New York Giants hooking it up in Foxborough at Gillette Stadium. What is Murph going to have his sharp
Starting point is 00:20:50 eye on? We're going to ask him that question when we conclude this episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast in just a moment. But first, folks, it's always nice to have a little enrichment come your way. And that enrichment can come your way from sports knowledge.

Starting point is 00:21:54 Bet online where the game starts. Patriots fans, we're about to bring it all home on this hashtag LockedOnMurph Monday episode of the LockedOnPatriots podcast. Joined, as always, each and every week to kick off the week in style by my good friend, the kind of Murphy Fisto himself, Thomas Murphy of E2GSports.com. Murph, we've talked about the offense a lot today. We've talked about Matt Patricia. We've talked about Mike Giardi. We've talked about Mac Jones.
Starting point is 00:22:24 A lot of M's here. Murph, Mike. We're all, you know, the M's are really having it right now. But we're about to turn our, and Monday, absolutely. But we are about to turn our attention to an infamous T-word, and that is Thursday. Thursday is the first preseason action that your New England Patriots will see this season.
Starting point is 00:22:46 7 p.m. Pats open the preseason against the New York football Giants, a tradition like no other in the preseason. The Patriots and Giants always find a way to hook it up. They're kicking off the preseason this year instead of closing it like they usually do, but still going to be a fun game. It always is when the Pats and the Giants hook it up. Brian Dayball, we know him very well from his time here in New England, time up in Buffalo. do but still going to be a fun game it always is when the Pats and the Giants hook it up Brian
Starting point is 00:23:05 Dayball we know him very well from his time here in New England time up in Buffalo you know it's been you know a great you know run so far for Brian he is the new head coach of the Giants and he said last week that he intends to be playing his starters in this game he wants to see what his guys can do now Patriots have a new offense. We've discussed that. They have a lot of new components on defense. First of all, do you believe the Patriots may follow suit, not to the extent that the Giants are, but do you believe that they might be inclined to play their starters a little more? And bottom line, what are you looking to see this Thursday in Foxborough? Yeah, that's exactly what I'm looking to see is how much time the starters get in.
Starting point is 00:23:47 It would be smart and behoove the hoodie to get these frontline guys as many reps in this new offense as they possibly can in game situations like this. So, yeah, I'm expecting to see a lot more of that. I want to see how both sides of the Patriots line line up. What are we going to be seeing? It's a nice little sneak peek into the thinking of Bill Belichick, not on just on offense, but on defense and how things are going to line up. I want to see how the running back core is spread out. Who's getting the first team reps? Who's catching the ball out of the backfield? Things of that nature.
Starting point is 00:24:30 And I definitely want to see how Jonu Smith is going to be used. Absolutely. And I think in a lot of ways, that's going to be a big, big key for the New England Patriots, watching Jonu Smith, watching his incorporation into this offense because Johnnie I've gone on record saying I believe him to be the offensive x factor on this team this year it's going to be the key of being able to use the tight end personnel in a two-man tight end set and that 12-man personnel more than 18.6 percent of the time which is what we saw last
Starting point is 00:25:02 year if Johnnie is capable of doing that you're going to see those looks a lot more because we know hunter can handle the offense and judging from what i've seen in uh mini camp and training camp jono looks like he's ready to master it too so he can definitely get out there and he'll be able to do some stuff and of course on the defensive side of the ball you're looking to see some of the guys be able to fit in people that have been activated off a pup that may not have had an opportunity to make their case early on also guys that had you know maybe not the opportunity to do what they wanted to do last year and that's really make a case for a roster spot uh anthony jennings has had a very good
Starting point is 00:25:38 training camp henry anderson has had a very good training camp and i want to definitely cap to myself for that because i was one of the very few people before camp that went on record saying that I believe Henry would have a good camp and he's making me look good so far. So thanks a lot, Henry, but much appreciated. But bottom line, there have been a lot of guys that have stood out and I'm looking forward to seeing them on Thursday. Yeah. I'm looking for some guys to take a step up, guys like Ronnie Perkins, guys like Danny Jannings on the defensive side. Perkins has been taken down a peg or two as to another guy that's underachieved.
Starting point is 00:26:12 I'm looking to, really looking forward to seeing how Jabril Peppers steps up on Thursday night. That's going to be fun. Yeah, it's true because I mean, you know, for all intents and purposes, and we talked about him here last week on Locked On Patriots, Joshua Bledsoe keeps making plays. He made a play on the ball in the in-stadium practice,
Starting point is 00:26:33 so he's definitely putting his full-court press out there. I don't think he's endangering Jabril's roster spot on this team. The Patriots clearly have a spot for him and clearly have high hopes, but it's interesting to see all of these guys step up and take that next step at the expense of maybe some veterans that the Patriots may not have around here. And we're going to be talking about roster spots soon here on Locked On Patriots as well. The young red shirt guys from last year are really going to have to show out
Starting point is 00:27:03 because at this point they have not shown out in camp yeah no i mentioned ronnie perkins and then there's there's cam mcgrone right we got to see what he's not hearing a lot of great things really really not and this upsets me because these are two very smart football players two great athletes that should be doing much better yeah exactly mean, the athleticism is there. They show it during training camp. There's no question about it. But when it comes to X's and O's being in the right spot, that's where the criticism is coming in on both Perkins and really especially McGrone. And, you know, you look at McGrone and say, okay, well, he couldn't
Starting point is 00:27:40 see the field at all last year, completely off. You have to treat him like a rookie. Maybe there's a little bit of a pass. Ronnie Perkins was a healthy scratch for a good amount of time last year so he had time to observe you'd hope there's a little bit more but not ready to pull the plug on either one of these guys yet exactly that's why absolutely that's why you want to see what they can do on the field and ultimately the big test starts um it starts thursday night when they start to see meaningful time out there on the field. Murph, it is always a blast. Always, always great times when you join me here on hashtag Locked on Murph Monday, each and every week here on the Locked on Patriots podcast, folks.
Starting point is 00:28:16 Murph is truly one of the best at what he does.
