Pass fans, 2022 training camp has really begun this time.
The pads are on in Foxborough.
Three days of padded practices already in the books.
And the Patriots continue to make headlines.
Offense struggling a little bit.
Defense dominating.
We're hearing all of that coming from Foxborough.
And we've been reporting that here on Locked
On Patriots, as yours truly has been there, boots on the ground, watching each and every
practice.
And joining me today to break it all down, we're once again joined by one of our very
favorites here on Locked On Patriots, a phenomenal columnist for Pat's Propaganda, podcast host
extraordinaire of A Claire Perspective
of Patriots podcast. She is the Countess of Clas herself, Miss Claire Clasie Claire Cooper.
Welcome back to the show, Countess. Well, thank you very much for having me back. And Mike,
I think you got the introduction a little bit incorrect because I am your host, Claire Clasie
Claire Cooper, as I welcome these people to this flipped edition of Lockdown Patriots.
So thank you, Mike, for joining us today to tell us about training camp.
Mea culpa, mea culpa, because I did introduce today's show as Flippin' the Script, and that's exactly what we're going to do.
Flippin' the Script worked out so well the last time, Claire, that we thought we'd do it again here on Locked on Patriots.
So I'm going to be the interviewee today once again.
And Claire is going to ask those burning questions that she's been dying to ask when it comes to Patriots training camp.
And Claire, from my understanding, and this is going to shock a lot of people, the first question that you have for me, Countess, is tight-ended related.
Am I correct on that?
Am I actually, like, am I reading the room correctly?
Well, Mike, you have to give the people what they want.
And what our people want is tight-ended no but in all seriousness it's something that
is kind of being a hubbub at the moment is in regards to Devon Asiasi now yes I know that I
have spoken to I've spoken about not to about about him at length in the past because my puzzlement
was about how he wasn't utilised that kind of thing so coming into this season
i was very much of the opinion of there's a good chance that this kid's saying bye-bye
that he's not really you know i was waiting for a trade that kind of thing didn't happen fair enough
and i am hearing whisperers whispers whisperers whispers that asiasi is reportedly having a good
camp now again you're the boots on the ground guy
you're the one that has seen this so do tell us Mike is this the case is he fighting for his
roster spot do you think we're gonna see Devin Asiassi what have you witnessed so far in this
first week of Patriots training camp for the tight end? That's a good question. And yeah,
he has. I think Devin has actually been much better. He's looked more comfortable in the
offense. He's running his routes a little bit more crisp. He's actually showing more physicality.
And I know with padded practices only a couple of days in, it's hard to get a read on that.
But the way he's playing, the lunges that he's using uh the way he's blocking his frame
these are things that are always telltale when it comes to a tight end or really any player
uh in early stages of training camp because it shows the level of physicality that they're
willing to put out there he looks more physically comfortable i think he's probably more healthy
than he's been in quite some time and i think his understanding of the system and
getting a chance to come in and work with a lot of these guys has really been a key component so
he's getting some run with the starting unit there are times where you see the three tight end sets
out there and jono and hunter are obviously the flagships they're going to continue to be he's not
going to challenge for the top two spots but if the Patriots decide they're going to carry a third tight end and from a lot of what we're seeing
looking very likely that at least they'll carry three I think Devin has the upper hand right now
and I'm glad to see this in a lot of ways because scouting him coming out of college he looked like
the type of guy that really had the opportunity to make an impact. And we're seeing that on the field, really bringing the skill set that he had at UCLA.
I'm liking what I've seen from him so far.
Mike, what would you say in comparison perhaps to maybe last season, last training camp?
Granted, I know that it's trying to cast your mind back and I am putting you a bit on the spot here because it is 12 months ago.
But is there anything that you recall comparatively with how he was last training camp because I feel like we have
sort of done this rodeo before we have kind of heard that Asiasi was doing good was looking good
am I correct in sort of that assumption or do you think that this year we are really looking
at a different guy in training camp yeah we are really looking at a different guy in
training camp yeah I think we're seeing a different guy in terms of his approach in terms of his
understanding of the offense uh in the past we've seen Devin pop when it comes to his skill set
I've said before this kid's a natural hands catcher great body control that's one of the
great things I really liked about him at UCLA and also his ability to blend size, speed,
and length. We've seen all that before. We've seen flashes. We haven't seen it consistently
over a long period of time. Otherwise we would have seen a lot more of Devin on the field the
last couple of years. Haven't seen that with Asiasi, but the one thing that I'm seeing this
year is he's a more nuanced route runner. He running routes a little bit better he's not finding himself out of place um early on in minicamp he ran an incorrect route bill belichick
threw his hands up in the air and i'm sitting there thinking to myself oh here we go we're
watching yeah this is not going to end well i don't know if that was the wake-up call and i
don't want to sit there and point to that moment as the turning point for Devin Asiasi,
but I will say this.
Since then, he's been much more focused.
I've noticed a greater eagerness in him to be able to make the plays that he needs to make,
and bottom line, I think that's a big, big part of what the Patriots are seeing
and why they're saying that
he has made that good jump and i'm using quotes there because that is bill belichick's exact
terminology that he used when we spoke to him yesterday before camp he said look he says i
really think you know this kid's made a lot of improvement physically he looks good he's tracking
well trending in the right direction and he's made a good leap, a good jump.
So when you get that type of praise from Bill Belichick, other than to say, yeah, Devin's out there, he's doing a good job for us,
all the guys are doing well,
he made it a point to end his note by talking about Devin,
not really bringing it back to all of the guys.
That leads me to believe that Bill's seeing something that he likes in him,
and it's easy to see that on the field.
Devin looks more comfortable and he's doing a good job.
Good stuff.
This is good stuff.
Absolutely.
And, you know, Claire, it's always fun to talk tight endage.
We always love talking tight endage.
And, folks, the Countess is not done yet when it comes to putting me on the hot seat
and grilling me a little bit more about what we're
seeing on the field from your New England Patriots which of the wide receivers are going to pop a
little bit when it comes to the New England Patriots and when it comes to what we're seeing
on the field both offensively and defensively as well don't want to forget the defense because
we're hearing all of the information out there that they're dominating.
I can tell you that they are dominating, and one particular player is really standing out above the rest.
Who is that? We're going to talk about that in just a moment when this episode of the Lockdown Patriots podcast continues.
But first, Countess might have something to say about this.
I just want to know how are we?
Are we doing OK?
Absolutely.
She's doing well.
She's doing well in the hot seat, folks.
And we're absolutely thrilled to have her there.
So when this episode of the Lockdown Patriots podcast continues, we will talk about the New England Patriots wide receivers.

Patriots fans, we are once again flipping the script here on this episode
of Locked On Patriots Talk and Training Camp
and I am on the hot seat
this week and always
always thrilled to be
joined on the microphone by the Countess of
Clas herself, Ms. Claire Clasie
Claire Cooper of That's Propaganda
and a Claire Perspective of Patriots Podcast
Claire, I know you have some
burning questions on your mind
when it comes to training camp and it comes to what's going on in Foxborough.
In the previous segment, big surprise here, folks,
we talked a little bit about tight endage, and Devin Asiasi came up a lot.
We didn't actually, believe it or not, we didn't talk.
Hunter Henry, John O. Smith, very little.
Ryan Izzo's name didn't come up at all.
I'm very surprised by that.
Very restrained.
You were very controlled, and I appreciate that.
But the tight endage is not the only position that's popping a little bit
when it comes to the New England Patriots
and it comes to the situation with offensive players on the field.
There's always a lot to monitor when it comes to
the Patriots offense. And I know there's a lot of people that are concerned about the offense right
now, Claire. When you look at this and you look at the New England Patriots, what's on your mind?
Is there anything that you would like to know that I've seen out there on the field when it comes to
the Patriots offense and some of
the concerns that people may have well Mike I think there is as you mentioned there's a lot of concern
when it comes to the offense at the moment and that's kind of their first week the defense seems
to dominate it would seem but I know that there's one burning question out there because the one
thing that people were very interested in even before training camp before the draft was that wide receiver Patriots drafted Parker as we know so
he may possibly be that WR1 as everyone likes to pencil him but I think at the moment the two names
that are maybe more popular to be discussing to be interested in and it's a lot to do with speed
because these guys are sort of renowned for their speed so Michael which wide receiver has impressed you more is it the rookie Thornton
the the draft pick with you know the need for speed or is it actually Nelson Aguilar in his
second year you know this is a very tough question Claire and I'm glad that you asked that because
the easy
response to this would be to say oh well taekwon thornton is impressing me more because he's a
rookie he's doing all these amazing things taekwon had a tremendous catch yesterday over the shoulder
brilliant catch tight coverage uh jalen mills was all over him um really showed his speed his
ability to track the ball in the air, something that everybody just marveled at.
And then he even got a clap from Jalen himself, who really just couldn't resist.
He had to tip his cap and give it to his opponent at that point.
He really did everything he could.
Jalen's coverage was excellent, but Taekwon was just that much better on the exchange.
So the thing that I've liked about Taekwon thornton so far is that his engagement
has been a little bit above average when it comes to typical rookie wide receivers especially rookie
wide receivers in the patriot system this is not an easy offense to learn right off the bat and
even though there's been some for lack of a better term folks dumbing down of the offense and that's
what we're hearing is that you know that, they've simplified it, streamlined it a little bit more.
It's still a complex system to be able to learn.
So for Taekwon to be able to come in and take to it as quickly as he has,
even though there's still rookie growing pains,
that's a big time, you know, boom for him.
And I think that's something that will continue to help him
in the coming days and weeks as we progress toward, you know, toward the regular season or at least preseason games to see what Taekwon has done.
But I'm very much impressed by what Nelson Aguilar has done all offseason long.
He struggled last year, obviously came out the first couple of games, especially the Miami game opening game.
You're looking at Nelson and saying, wow, the Patriots may have stumbled out of something here even though he got a big-time contract maybe he's got the capabilities of
living up to it but he didn't quite live up to those expectations right off the bat he started
to fade a little bit there was some you know injury concerns and ultimately Nelson just did
not have the type of first year in New England I think we all wanted him to have. He hit the offseason dedicated and very much focused on being better in all aspects.
Every time Mac Jones held an informal workout or his teammates held an informal workout, Nelson was right there.
He showed up to every OTA, every minicamp practice.
He was very much engaged from the get-go to be better than what he
was last year and that to me says a lot he could have very easily lied back on his laurels took his
you know big time contract and said okay well you know the contract's going to pay me a good
amount of guaranteed money i'm getting that guaranteed money no matter what so i don't
necessarily have to prove myself i've already done that to earn the contract that
i have nelson took it as a challenge and he absolutely is showing a dedication to being
the type of receiver this team needs him to be and he's showing it on the field he's uh you know
he's running his routes very well he's really getting on the same page with mac jones had a
few nice catches yesterday uh you know between the uh the two of them the one-handed catch over juwan williams to me was the i think it was the catch of the day even more so uh than
taekwon thornton uh just you know the athleticism that he showed and then the frame of mind to turn
around head to the end zone sometimes players will forget to do that on a one-on-one drill it's very
easy to forget your surroundings when you're not in a complete
uh you know um frame of mind of either seven on seven or 11 on 11 drills um but nelson has been
tremendous and he showed that right off the bat so in terms of eye catching and surprise i would
probably say taekwon thornton has been the pleasant surprise or the bigger eye catcher but
overall um who am i more impressed with i'm
probably going to say nelson aguilar because he had a pretty high bar to get over and so far from
what i've seen he's dedicated himself to getting over it that's the thing um it's unfortunate for
him that he's got such a heavy expectation or he had such a heavy expectation on him
last season but you could argue you could
look at it and argue that Aguilar's had a year in the system um he granted he didn't meet the
expectations of his contract that kind of thing but now you've got Thornton and it's like oh well
he's a rookie the expectations are low but I think the weight is quite heavy on him as well and
although he's not a first round draft pick so he hasn't got that you know that kind of stigma that they get when it's a first round draft pick that I
know like, you know, Nikhil Harry was felt very much a subject to.
His speed is kind of what set him apart.
You know, what made him be chosen, that sort of thing.
And I think that's going to be a heavy weight to bear because the
expectations are high on him,
even though he wasn't a first
round draft pick because we're looking at this guy thinking well we need a really top wide receiver
he's really fast that's the expectation so I think both guys are have got this burden of
expectation upon them for sort of like for different reasons really but I think they're
both weighted down a little by that now granted that you know they're professionals so they'll deal with it it's just something that to
sort of think about that you know they both have this upon them so I think to deal with and to
to carry if you like yeah without question and I completely agree with you and I think it's a good
point that you make on Taekwon because there is still the second round draft pick you know weight
that's on his
shoulder maybe it's not a first rounder maybe with the jettisoning of Nikhil Harry things will loosen
up a little bit and people will be a little bit more amenable to see what he's done I can tell
you Taekwon has already been more impressive in training camp from what I've seen than what we
saw from Nikhil previously although there were moments that Nikhil Harry did flash some of that first round talent. And we wrote about it.
I saw it last year.
There were moments.
But ultimately, I think Taekwondo is showing an engagement that we haven't seen before.
So good stuff.
Absolutely good stuff, Countess.
And you always, always bring the level of knowledge that we need up a little bit with
your insightful questions and your insightful
information and a dynamite drop in as well folks we are not done yet because we've talked a lot
of offense but we haven't forgotten about the defense you can't forget about the defense because
quite honestly claire with the exception of day one defense has dominated every practice we've
watched so far for your new england patriots a lot of standouts, but who stood out above the rest?
I'll give my thoughts on that when the Countess puts me on the hot seat once again when we
continue and conclude this episode of the Locked On Patriots podcast.
But first, folks, sports season is always going.

Patriots fans,
almost through our clip in the script,
midweek Wednesday episode,
Locked on Patriots podcast,
joined as always on Wednesdays by the Countess of Clas herself,
the Empress of Tight Endage.
The rest of the nicknames that she has
can be found in massive volumes over at
the Patriots Hall of Fame.
But no,
all kidding aside,
Claire,
Clazzy Claire Cooper joins me today from Pat's Propaganda and a Claire
perspective,
the Patriots podcast,
which folks,
if you're not subscribed to do it today,
one of the best listens out there anywhere in Patriots media,
you won't be disappointed. Claire delivers a tour de force every single time she hits the microphone with some
amazing guests in boston sports media as well but claire i understand you're not quite done putting
me on the hot seat yet because you have some defensive questions it's not all about the
offense you're not all about being the empress of tight endage
you bring the principle of positivity to us all here you bring the total package as always so
do you have a defensive question for me countess of course mike i i'm not just an offense girl
although the o-line is very dear to my heart i do like me a bit of defense as well definitely
like me a bit of defense so you kind of if you're a patriots fan you don't need to have had your
boots on the ground at practice as obviously i haven't uh to know that the defense as you
aforementioned is dominant the defense has dominated the first pretty much the first
week of training camp now we mentioned earlier with regards to the offense and people were concerned but you know
still plenty of time left yet folks but as we said the defense has shown up strong but who has stood
out to you the most in performance wise what one guy have you got your sharp eye on to give him the two thumbs up?
Well, this guy is making me look very smart. I had the good fortune of being on the First in
Foxborough podcast on the Odyssey Network with WEI's new beat reporter, Kyrie Thompson, good
friend of the program. And he asked me prior to camp who he thought I had identified or who I believed was
going to be the defensive x-factor for the Patriots this year and I hesitated it slightly
but I decided on Christian Christian is making me look very intelligent far more intelligent than I
truly am I assure you uh but that's because of his play on the field Christian has been
the best defensive player that I've seen out there on camp.
And to be honest, I really don't think it's that close.
And that's saying a lot because there have been some good defensive performances.
I've really been impressed by what I've seen from Jalen Mills, Terrence Mitchell, back position.
Really like what I've seen from Raekwon McMillan. Henry Anderson is really, I think, giving a little bit more, you know,
credence to the fact that there is some talent in that defensive line,
maybe even that hybrid defensive lineman edge rush that we saw him be a couple of years
and do it so prolifically in New York with the Jets.
So these guys are really making their case for a roster spot.
But if you want to talk about
somebody that really has the ability to be the key defender for the Patriots this year, it's
Barmore. And now that we're seeing action with the pads on, it's really even becoming more clear.
It's so tough to gauge linemen, whether it be offensive linemen or defensive linemen,
without putting the pads on. You're not seeing the pushes. You're not seeing them holding up in blocks. You're not seeing one-on-one drills. It's very hard to do
that. But for the last couple of days, Claire, Farmore has been excellent, especially yesterday.
He's really stood out above the rest. And when I say yesterday, folks, I mean, Tuesday, sorry about
that. If you're listening on a different day, but just his ability to get by his opponent in one-on-one.
Cody Rusi is someone that Murph and I have had our sharp eye on
about a possibility of making the roster as an undrafted free agent.
And Cody's a solid player.
He's having a decent camp.
And he may very well be a member of this roster
at the end of the camp experience.
But Barmore blew by him. just tremendous agility, tremendous footwork,
made very quick work of him.
I mean, that was a highlight reel that if you're looking at Barmore going past Rusi,
it really looked like a pro and a rookie.
I mean, I'm sorry to say it, it really did.
And that's, again, no disrespect to Cody, but, you know,
Barmore just made it look easy.
A little different when he went up against Michael Wainu.
That was, I wrote about this for Sports Illustrated in my camp recap.
I said it was the irresistible force meeting the immovable object.
These two guys held up pretty well.
I mean, it really was.
This was a battle between two tough linemen.
Barmore eventually was able to utilize his footwork, got around Mike,
but I want to give props to Uenu, too.
He held his own against a very good defender,
but Barmore's tenacity allowed him to get by someone with Mike's size
and his agility for a guy his size, too.
Really, really important.
So I love seeing what I'm seeing from Christian Barmore so far,
and I think it spells well for the Patriots offense in general,
excuse me, the Patriots defense in general,
because he's such a key part of how they're able to use their game.
If he's playing at such a high level,
he's going to command one or two guys on him at all times to contain him.
That's going to free up a lot of linebackers,
a lot of guys on the edge to get after the quarterback.
If Barmore is this efficient now,
it's going to have a ripple effect on the entire defense.
Yeah, I agree.
And I think that that puts some great positivity on it
because I know there's been a bit of negativity
in regards to the offense and stuff like that.
And we mentioned it's only the first week,
but it's good to
see that the strength of the defense is is really stepping up and it's it's interesting to see those
kind of things and you know and we like to be positive here don't we you know regardless it's
something that you that you sort of champion on on lockdown patriots anyways the positivity of it
let's not be too negative so it's um it's really good to hear so thank you very much oh you're very welcome and again i mean
you know just to you know reiterate and things about you know barmore and the thing that i also
want to put forth is that he looks healthy last year there were knee problems to end of the season
and that's one of the big reasons why he wasn't drawing the defenders excuse me drawing the
blockers that he was drawing in obvious passing situations.
Teams weren't dedicating two, three guys on him at one time.
So it had, again, a ripple effect.
Matt Judon was covered a little bit more.
He couldn't get a quarterback.
His numbers dropped.
Now that Barmore is healthy, he's going to command that type of attention once again.
It's going to free those guys up. So, again again i've been so impressed with bar more and so impressed with
what i've seen like you said that's a good that's a really good point the ripple effect and i'm glad
you know mentioning judon because he did seem to maybe burn out a little bit at the end of last
year different people had different kind of opinions on to sort of what had happened you
know had he just been used too much you know had he got nothing left in the tank that kind of thing but either way if you've got
bar more at kind of like at full strength and it utilizes judon that little bit more you know does
it does it give that little bit more out of judon and so do we see something that little bit more
out of him as well so that ripple effect is is really positive in that way. Yeah, it absolutely is. And I think
you hit the nail right on the head. That ripple effect will have an impact on so many areas of
the defense. And with Judon, yeah, I think there was a little bit of burnout on his plate. No fault
to Matt. I think he was overly used. I think there were too many snaps early on. So yeah,
there might have been some
fatigue, but it also had a lot to do with how Christian Barmore was being played too. And the
fact that he could zero in on that where before maybe they didn't have the resources to, if these
two guys are clicking on all cylinders this year, folks, keep a sharp eye on that. Could be one of
the more exciting things to watch about the New England Patriots in 2022.
Definitely.
