lineup, Nick, Patriots, Dolphins, storied rivalry.
Neither one of these teams got off to the right foot that they wanted to in 2025.
But a familiar face and excited to touch base with you as we get ready for this week
week to match up.
Yeah, I'm excited to do this with you, Kyle, and I don't think either fan base is feeling
great coming off week one.
I think both fan bases are hopeful, praying maybe to the football gods, that there's
some kind of turnaround for week two.
Yeah, so let's get into storylines out of this game,
whether that's something about week two and its matchup in particular
or something that happened in week one
that's kind of bled into the early chapters of this week
as we go through practice, getting ready for week two,
what's the biggest storyline out of Foxborough right now with the Patriots
at 0 and 1 with the loss to the Raiders?
So if I was talking to you before 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon,
I would have said, Drake May, the offense, what's going on there?
But then we find out when Mike Vrable meets up with the media that defensive coordinator, Terrell Williams, is dealing with some health stuff.
And he missed a big portion of camp due to what he termed a health scare.
Now, Vrable says this is a different situation than the prior situation, but Williams is going to be away from the team for a few days.
Doesn't sound like he's going to make the trip down to Miami.
So now all of a sudden, your expected defense.
of coordinator, who has the first game under his belt, the first time he's a play caller,
looks like he's going to miss week two.
And this is smack dab in the middle of a work week, Kyle.
So it's kind of all over the place.
Zach Corr, who filled in for Williams during camp, he's the inside linebackers coach.
He filled in for Williams during camp.
Sounds like he's going to take some of Williams job.
But even Vrable with the media on Wednesday said he wasn't sure.
If Williams is not going to be there, he's not sure who's going to be calling the plays on Sunday.
So right now, that's the biggest story.
Who is going to be your defensive coordinator on Sunday and who's going to be calling the plays?
So I wanted to ask you about the defense in week one where a lot of explosives, which I think that,
and I know Christian Gonzalez didn't play in week one, but I was surprised to see the explosive play
numbers that the Raiders were able to get on New England because from the
the outside looking in at the roster, you knew there was a lot of youth on the
offensive side of the ball and a scheme change for a second year quarterback, looked at the
defense and say, hey, there's a lot of really likable pieces here.
So what did you think was the most common thread that contributed to what those explosive
plays were?
And I'm asking as an offense that had no explosive plays in week one, trying to figure out
what were the Raiders able to do successfully?
Yeah, as I mentioned, you know, it was Williams first.
game as a DC. And it just felt, Kyle, like it was his first game as a DC. And what I mean by
that is it felt like he couldn't wait for game one to just empty the box out. And I thought that
he was overly aggressive. Now, this scheme is going to be much more aggressive than it was during
the Belichick years and even during the Mayo Covington year last season. But I thought they were
overly aggressive. And the perfect example is the first touchdown for the Raiders. It's a third
and 11, and Williams calls for a blitz that involved both Christian Barmore and Milton Williams
dropping into coverage on third and 11, your best two interior defensive linemen, dropping to
the second level, sending a cornerback, leaving your deep safety, Jalen Hawkins, pretty much one-on-one,
he ends up flat-footed, you get burned over the top. So there were a number of calls. There was a call
where he blitzed both cornerbacks on the same play.
There was a call on, I think it was third and 20 when he sent the house.
It was a zero blitz for all intents and purposes, and they got burnt over the top one-on-one
down the sideline along the boundary.
So I think that was the biggest issue.
It was just being overly aggressive and sometimes being aggressive at the wrong moments.
And Gino Smith, he tends to be pretty good against the blitz, and he was really good on Sunday.
So you combine all those factors to go along with some mistackles and some miscommunication.
Those were the biggest issues.
But I would start with Williams and being way too aggressive, throwing the kitchen sink at the Raiders in week one.
For Miami's standpoint, storyline on each side of the ball.
Miami's defense gave up a lot of chunks as well.
But it didn't look like necessarily Anthony Weaver's first go round as a defensive coordinator,
but it looked like a team that had a lot of guys that hadn't played together on the back end.
And that includes one of the teams undrafted rookies from last year.
Storm Duck went down to Rasul Douglas, who'd been with the team.
They'd flirted with him all offseason going back to May.
Well, he signs a week before camp and 15 minutes into the game,
he's playing outside corner and has to play the rest of the game.
So those communications felt like it led to a lot of soft coverage for Indianapolis on early downs,
which flies in the face of what they said they wanted to do all off season.
They talked about wanting to be aggressive on the outside.
outside, disrupt the timing of routes.
There's a lot of open air.
And the Colts, they also did a great job using a lot of early and neutral down
play action passing to kind of get these soft voids underneath.
And then they selectively took some shots down the field.
And they got a fair mix of chunks.
They had a touchdown pass in the high red zone on second and 20.
And that was one of the early possessions in that game that was Indianapolis's first
touchdown.
So I think for Miami, I'm interested to see what they change about their coverage matrix.
You talked about wanting to be aggressive.
Are you willing to be more aggressive and compress the open air and kind of force Drake
made to take some more low percentage throws so that this pass rush that you've identified
is the strength of your defense can actually have a chance to get to the quarterback
because more often than not, the ball was out of Daniel Jones's hand when he hit the back
of his drop on offense just a really inefficient effort and the score kind of got them away
from whatever they wanted to do running the football.
Right.
So that's obviously as we get into matchups in segment two here on our crossover, we can kind
of talk about what some of those matchups look like, but Tua Tuaa Tuaa looked like he
was working in a new offense and it was year four.
And that was the most surprising thing was I didn't think they necessarily called
a great game. I think they put their pass protection designs in some rough spots with
tight ends and running backs blocking guys on the edge or DeForest Buckner in a one-on-one
situation with a converted wide receiver from Idaho State Tanner Connor, who's playing tight-end
now. He had DeForest Buckner 101 and pass pro. And it went about as well as you thought
it would. So I think for having the continuity in the scheme and that being such a big driving
point of what this year was supposed to be about to see those kinds of lapses, to see late
play calls getting in and really running down on the play clock, and then to see Tua having
early progression opportunities to get the ball to primaries where his eyes are starting and it's
open. And he turns it down. It felt like he was either not reading it or maybe he was
pressing looking for bigger plays and not taking those on schedule throws. Whatever it was,
that's the thing that New England should aspire to try to replicate with however they choose
to play Miami in defense. Yeah, I mean, I watched the game between Miami and Indy.
I checked it out on Monday morning. And I think it sounds old school, Kyle, but it's like the
trenches, the trenches, right? I thought the offensive line had some issues for you guys.
I thought the defensive line, you know, coming into the season, I was saying this defensive
line in Miami should be one of the best when it comes to getting to the quarterback.
But as you mentioned, they didn't have a consistent opportunity to do that.
And the turnover's just rocked you from the very beginning.
And I thought, too, overall was just careless.
I thought, you know, the fumble, careless, like hold on to the football, young man,
tuck it, go down.
What are we doing?
He's kind of holding it out like a loaf of bread, just carelessness there.
You know, he apparently didn't see a lot too underneath when he just throws a football
and didn't spot the guy underneath on the route.
I thought that was a careless throw by him.
And it's just he had another, I think, one or two throws in that game that could have been picked as well that were dangerous,
where he just kind of threw it to double if not triple coverage.
He looked off all game long.
And my question for you and all of Miami is there was this feeling at the end of last year that the league had kind of figured out Mike McDaniel's offense.
And, you know, after the week one struggles, I think that question still remains.
and we'll see if they can put it together in week two.
But man, that was from somebody who watched the Patriots offense in the second
half, which was atrocious, that was a rough watch for me on Monday watching Miami
and just really the entire outfit, but especially Tua.
Well, we're going to get into matchups.
I'll answer that question on the other side of the break as well with that offense,
but I do want to get to break and we can kind of maybe sell some more points for each
one of these offenses in segment two and segment three for this week two matchup.
That's coming your way next.

So, Nick, you had asked if the league has caught up to Mike McDaniel.
Daniel's offense. And I think the answer to that question would be not if they followed through
on what they aspired and said they were going to do this offseason, which was they talked about
diversifying the run game and adding better players to the interior of the offensive line to be
able to have more displacement. Well, James Daniels goes out three plays into the game.
So he's on injured reserve now. He'll miss at least four weeks. The starting right tackle,
Austin Jackson went down towards the end of the game, the guy who's going to come in for him,
and it sounds like they're going to play Larry Borm at right tackle this week against New England.
He at least got all the snaps in the preseason because Jackson missed the preseason.
So there's a setback in that regard.
There's a negative game script that calls you to call, I think the second highest incidence
of neutral down pass rate of any team in the league in week one was the dolphins.
And you mentioned the turnovers and the short fields and you didn't force any.
well, you did force a punt, but then you ran into the punter on fourth and three,
and they got the ball back and milked the rest of the first half off
and ruined any chance of you getting on the board and double dipping in the middle
eight minutes of the game.
So they aspired to be a more run diverse team.
But also, like, Tyree Kill missed the entire offseason program and all of the preseason
and then leads the team in targets and gets the team.
the early featured Fed targets as soon as he's back in the lineup in week one as compared
to they really hyped up Jaila Waddle.
Jalen Waddle was an afterthought in the game.
Yeah.
So that's the part for me.
If you're just going to default back to what your old habits are as soon as you start
playing real games and you're in the thick of it, then yes, the league has caught up to
what you're trying to do in that regard.
And I think that's what makes the week two game and the matchups with the Patriots so
fascinating because it's a chance for you to kind of get a blank slate.
and show all the things that you talked about wanting to be that were different
offensively and putting some different things on tape,
they're going to make people ask different questions on how they're going to defend you.
Like that has to be a part of the puzzle for Miami and week till.
You know, it's interesting, because a lot of the same conversation happened
when the Patriots hired Josh McDaniels.
The question was during his year off,
how much was he going to be willing to change his offense?
And, you know, he talked about visiting other teams in the NFL during his year off,
visiting college programs during his year off in learning some different things.
And it was interesting, you know, some of the stuff that we saw against the Raiders.
It was a little bit new.
If you compare McDaniel's time with the Raiders versus, you know, what he did on Sunday,
for example, over 85% of the snaps were in shotgun against the Raiders,
which, you know, that's because Drake May is much more comfortable in shotgun than under center.
So that was a change.
But one thing that didn't change, and this is something that you saw a lot with Mike McDaniel and still see it, motion, pre-snap motion, motion at the snap to the point where the NFL had to go to Mike and say, look, calm down with the motion at the snap stuff because it might be borderline illegal Mike.
You know, against the Raiders, Patriots were bottom three, bottom four in the league when it came to motion pre-snap.
So it really was what you see is what you get.
there were a couple of run plays, you know, there was a speed option, an RPO option run that
that you could see was a little bit of a tweak, but it really was kind of vanilla.
And so I think the Dolphins and Dolphin fan base, when you sit down to watch this game on Sunday,
we'll be able to see if McDaniels made some heavy adjustments just by the motion.
And if it's going to be, you see what you get.
And I don't know if that's because they didn't want to put too much plate, too much on Drake May's plate
early on. And there's a lot of new pieces. Four of the five offensive linemen weren't in New
England in 2024. You got digs. You got Mack Hollins. You got a lot of new. Drake May in his
fourth offense in four years if you go back to North Carolina. So maybe that's what it was,
but it was vanilla. It was really vanilla. And I would like to see a little bit more creativity,
especially to get the run game going. I would love to hear from you in the back half a segment
two here. One matchup on each side of the ball that you think has a chance to define this game
one way or another. And then I will take two and do my best not to overlap with whichever two
you pick. So Patriots have the ball, Dolphins have the ball. Give me two matchups that you think
have a chance to define this game. All right. Well, I start with just Will Campbell and, you know,
left tackle. Is you going to be able to deal with the pass rush of Miami? Is you going to be
able to deal with some of the speed of Miami.
Another one on the offensive line is
Garrett Bradbury. And I know, you know,
Zealers, a very good football player.
And if you start getting that rush
up the middle, it's going to make Drake May a little shaky.
Bradbury was really good in week one against the Raiders
and pass protection, which was shocking because he
stunk out loud during the preseason and stunk out loud
in Minnesota last year.
Was that a flash in the pan against Adam Butler and some of the other
Raiders defenders? We'll see. But Bradbury's
is going to hold his water and Campbell also
too defensively what I'm looking at is you mentioned you know Larry
Borum on the on the right side you know you're talking back up right tackle he's
going to be lined up against Harold Landry and I'll tell you Landry was the most
impactful player on the Patriots defense last week he had eight pressures two
and a half sacks he was good against the run game he was a menace against the Raiders
so you can't let Harold Landry get going because if you do then you got a lot of
issues dealing with Milton Williams and Barmore in the middle. So I would say Landry
against Borum and I would say, you know, Bradbury against the assortment of guys on that
interior for the Dolphins defensive line. And we're going to keep it true to football and
in the trenches here. I'm going to pick a couple different guys on Miami's offensive line
with Jonah Savait and Ia, the rookie left guard, and then Keon, whether it is Keon Smith,
at the right guard position with James Daniels note going on IR or it.
could potentially be Daniel Brunskill.
They just signed a familiar face for you,
Cold Strange, Elfrey practice squad.
Don't expect him to get run in week two,
but his presence as somebody who knows how to snap,
I think does free up Daniel Brunskill,
who's played in this system before in San Francisco for several years,
to potentially, instead of just being the backup center,
maybe he gets flexed out as somebody who has a little bit more natural right
guard ability than Keon Smith,
who's a tackle that they've tried to,
cross-trained. So those two against, you mentioned names like Milton Williams and Christian
Barmore and they got some stout guys that can play and reduce inside, even on inside
chain on tackles like Keon White, right? Like they've got physical guys. They've got guys with
Twitch. They've got guys with length. They've got guys with agility. There's all different kinds
of skill sets that they have. How does Miami's interior play? Because this was the hallmark
position that they circled and said, we need to be better here. If we're going to fulfill
fill any aspirations we have on being a more dynamic offense and a more balanced offense
and a more physical offense in 2025. So when Miami has the ball, everything going to want
point at Tyree Kill and Jalen Wattle and if Christian Gonzalez is going to play and all those
questions, and that's fine. But if Miami comes out and pass the ball 35 times in this game,
I think they're just feeding into the problem that they've had. So that's my matchup when Miami
has the ball. When New England has the ball, I'm really interested to see who Miami
ends up putting in the nickel in this game.
They kind of shuffled a couple different guys,
whether it was Minka Fitzpatrick,
whether it was rookie Jason Marshall,
who they conferred it as an outside corner
because he's a big physical guy.
Somebody else who's familiar with the AFC East
and Ashton Davis looked like he was going to miss the start of the year.
He was back.
He got some run.
It looked like if he to Melifon,
he was going to be the second safety,
but he ended up conceding snaps to Trader
in the second half of the game.
So I think they're kind of unsettled there at that spot, but that's a really important position.
If they're going to play tighter in the intermediate areas of space, they need somebody that they feel a little bit more comfortable can do zone coverage stuff, take some coverage against tight ends, and fit the run.
And I think that's a really important matchup for Hunter Henry.
That's an important matchup for figuring out what you're doing with Ramandre Stevenson and Trevion Henderson.
as, you know, I would love to see Henderson get the ball more, maybe just not in week two.
I think he's a stud.
So that's the matchup for me that really stands out.
We're going to give our game predictions next here.
Three ways that each team could win the game and maybe some extra commentary on how likely those may or may not be to happen.

I'd like to give you the floor.
This is your first AFC East crossover here with us on the Lockdown Network.
some making sure that the hospitalities unreasonable hospitalities we say on the lockdown network right
go ahead and give me three matchup keys to victory for new england and then maybe a pulse check
on on the confidence meter of what those may or may not be i appreciate the hospitality i don't know
how anybody talking about this football game on either side could be confident honestly right i don't
i don't think there's much confidence from either side uh but but the three things i'm looking
at. Number one, run the football. The Patriots against the Raiders were entirely one
dimensional. They ran the football in the second half only three times, Kyle, and actually one
of them was a traditional carry, Antonio Gibson for two yards. So, I mean, you just look at the
run game. They completely bailed from the run game in the second half in a one possession
game. A game they were winning at the half. They just bailed from the run. They have to establish
the run. If they're a one dimensional offense, it leads to trouble. It leads to Drake May,
making mistakes. They've got to run the ball. Defensively, two things. You mentioned the nine
plays of 20 plus yards against the Raiders. And by the way, they had another play that was for
19. So they were literally this close to 10 plays of 20 plus yards. They've got to limit the chunk
plays. Like, don't be as aggressive. Don't send the house in bad situations. You cannot live
giving up chunk plays. You're going to give up a couple of them because you're an aggressive
defense, but don't give up a ton of them. And really just a general statement, I think,
I'm not sure if you'll have this down from Miami, but I think it's a kind of similar thing
for the dolphins. Make Tua uncomfortable. Make him uncomfortable from the jump. He tends to me
get a little skittish after the first thing he wants to do isn't quite there or he's unsure of
what he sees the very first time out there. So make Tua uncomfortable.
make him start thinking about that game at Indianapolis and take advantage of that.
So those are the three main keys to me for the Patriots.
How about you?
I think, and I agree with you wholeheartedly.
You could tell me the dolphins come out real fired up after laying an egg in week one
and they're at home and they bounce back and they fight for their coach.
And they were two and six last year and then finished six and three in the final nine games.
And they didn't quit then.
But you could also tell me that the air is out of the balloon.
It was really demoralizing and really deflating and all the noise is getting this team.
and it's flat again.
Like I could see either outcome, right?
I think for me, Miami,
I'd love to see him get under center
and run the football.
Now, they're a very 21 personnel heavy team
with a fullback on the field,
Alec Ingold.
They ran no under center play action passes in week one.
And I understand seven possessions,
seven scores,
you didn't get any stops.
You were down 17,
nothing by your third possession.
I get it.
But at the same time,
this Shanahan offense with the white,
zone and the stretch and the stress on the second level,
it's at its best when you put that second level in conflict.
And I think for Miami, getting under center and A, just mashing the football a little
bit like you talked about with wanting to run the ball, but doing that with your
bread and butter personnel group on early downs and then building some play action
passes off of that, I think is a good remedy to kind of get into some of the
core staples of what the offense has been in years past because the play action pass and
the RPO's has been like Tua and those style of throws has been really where they've made
their hay. We didn't see a lot of that specifically under center. So I think that's one thing.
I think defensively I've got two. If you're going to bring pressure, tell the Patriots you're
going to bring pressure because they tried to line up in these vanilla looks and that they'd run
the nickel from depth and they'd run a linebacker from four yards off the ball.
and you're blitz into nowhere.
And the Dolphins blitzed on more than 50% of their snaps defensively.
And more often than not, it's, oh, well, a safety green dogs and adds on because the
tight end stays into block and the linebackers firing from six yards off the ball.
Well, if it's three-step quick game and you're playing soft on the back end and that's
the pressure you bring, there's going to be open air to find the completion before the pressure
can even get there.
So I think that's the thing for me, if you want to be aggressive, and that's,
My third key is also get up on the line of scrimmage a little bit more in coverage as well,
because you're talking about wanting to run the ball.
The dolphins did not force enough high difficulty down the field throws.
Make Drake May and company with new receivers and a new offense throw lower percentage
throws down the field and be willing to live and die by that.
And if you end up getting burned by that, so be it.
but it's better than just conceding all the space and then simultaneously trying to blitz
from depth and have guys take longer time to get there with softer cushions in coverage
because that flies in the face of everything that they said they wanted to be this offseason.
And that's where I think it really created this deflating seven possession, seven score style defensive output.
Yeah, I think you're on to something there when you want to force Drake May to throw down the field
and more difficult throws.
One of the things about May during camp,
and especially during the preseason games,
he was a little hesitant to pull the trigger downfield.
And, you know, if I'm Miami, I'm walking in saying,
force him to make almost the easy throws.
You want him to try to prove that he can beat you death by paper cut
because one of the things about Drake is he misses some of these easy throws.
He missed four or five of them last week against the Raiders.
So you want to make him almost be consistent in his operation.
his mechanics.
And if you force, you know, if you're taking the underneath stuff away from him and forcing
him to beat you over the top, he has that ability, but will he be comfortable pulling the
trigger or will he be hesitant?
And then that starts to cause him to overthink.
And then that's when you have some of those mistakes and easy misses.
And that can at least set the stage for maybe your pass rush guys can get home a few times,
right?
And that was a part of the problem for Miami as well.
