Makes Sense - with Dr. JC Doornick - Good Shift - How to keep your feet in the face of adversity - E209

Episode Date: September 16, 2026

What does it really mean to “keep your feet” when life tries to sweep you away? In this short Good Shift, Dr. JC Doornick explores the difference between experiencing adversity and letting it take... control of your identity, direction, and response. Inspired by Bilbo Baggins’ timeless warning about stepping onto the road and not knowing where you might be swept off to, Dr. JC asks a deeper question: What if keeping your feet has less to do with controlling what happens and more to do with changing how you perceive it? Through the lens of the Interface Response System—Perceive, Pause, Process, Proceed—this episode challenges you to recognize that fear, adversity, and uncertainty don't automatically get to decide what something means. You may not control what shows up at your door, but you can learn to remain grounded long enough to decide what gets invited in. Because sometimes the greatest skill in navigating a difficult road isn't knowing exactly where you're going. It's learning how to keep your feet. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey everybody, this is Dragon. This is part of our new series called Good Shift, where we come through the Make Sense Substack and pick our favorite articles and bring them to you live right here once a week on the Make Sense with Dr. JCP podcast. We hope that you enjoy this because this is some good shift. Have you noticed that the world that we live in has been doing most of the thinking for you? That your beliefs, perceptions, reactions, fears and doubts have been shaped by unsolicited outside noise? How easy it's been for you to slip into that default sleepwalking mode and label it as life and reality.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Yeah, that ends here. Welcome to the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. podcast. This is your opportunity to start thinking for yourself, reclaim control, and step back into that role as the shock caller and dominant force of your own reality. It's when you change the way that you look at things, that the things that you look at begin to change. So let's wake up. Let's rise up and let's make sense of why and how shift happens. Hmm. Makes sense.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This is some good shift. There's an old piece of advice that only seems simple until life asks you to practice it, and that's to keep your feet. When life gets loud and when fear shows up at your door, keeping your feet means refusing to be knocked out of your position. It doesn't mean pretending everything is fine. Not becoming rigid, emotionless, or unwilling to change. What it means is staying connected to yourself long enough to choose your response
Starting point is 00:01:43 instead of handing over your nervous system to the first alarm that appears. Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings understood something about danger outside the door. He said, It is a dangerous business, Frodo, going outside of your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to. But so is believing every voice that tells you who you are. What is possible or why you should turn back. The challenge is not merely surviving adversity, my friends. The deeper challenge is learning to move through adversity without letting it rewrite your identity or steal your direction. That is where the interface response system
Starting point is 00:02:29 becomes practical. Perceive, pause, process, and proceed. Moving through adversity begins with the understanding and acceptance that adversity itself is only brought into existence by the perceiver. Think about it. Could adversity exist without someone's perceiving of it? No. Can the adversity one person perceives be seen completely different by another? Yes. By keeping your feet be achieved by simply changing the way that you look at the things that threaten your perception. Make sense? That's it for today.
