Makes Sense - with Dr. JC Doornick - Good Shift - Living Your Life By Design - E200

Episode Date: August 26, 2026

What if the hardest moments of your life aren’t interruptions to the plan—but part of the blueprint? In this episode of Makes Sense with Dr. JC, we explore the difference between a life that simpl...y happens to you and a life intentionally designed by you. Inspired by a recent conversation with Jack Daly and the philosophy behind his book Life by Design, Dr. JC challenges us to consider an uncomfortable question: Have you actually designed the life you’re living, or have you mostly been reacting to the one you were handed? We often spend more time planning vacations, careers, and purchases than we do consciously designing our values, relationships, health, purpose, and legacy. But becoming the Architect of Your Life doesn’t mean controlling everything that happens. It means deciding who you will become in response to what happens. Sometimes the greatest teachers arrive disguised as setbacks, adversity, trauma, loss, and even a life-changing diagnosis. These experiences can disrupt the life we planned while simultaneously revealing the life we actually want to live. They clarify what matters, expose what doesn’t, and remind us just how precious our time really is. The Good Shift is recognizing that adversity doesn’t always destroy the blueprint. Sometimes adversity gives you the blueprint. This episode invites you to reclaim the steering wheel, stop letting circumstances dictate your identity, and intentionally design the person you want to be and the life you want to live. Because if you don’t consciously design your reality, there will always be people, circumstances, fears, and expectations willing to design it for you. It’s time to look in the mirror, reclaim the keys of trust, and start living full out—not as the person the world expects you to be, but as the person you choose to become. Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Good Shift, a new weekly series from the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. podcast where I take one of my favorite entries from our Make Sense substack series and bring it to life right here on the podcast. Today's Good Shift is about living a life by design, inspired by one of our recent guest, Jack Daly, and the realization that sometimes the things that disrupt our plans in life are the very things that hand us the blueprints for a better life. into some good shift. Have you noticed that the world that we live in has been doing most of the thinking for you? That your beliefs, perceptions, reactions, fears and doubts have been shaped by unsolicited outside noise? How easy it's been for you to slip into that default sleepwalking mode and label it as life and reality. Yeah, that ends here. Welcome to the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. podcast. This is your opportunity to start thinking for yourself, reclaim control, and step back into that role as the shock caller and dominant force of your own reality. It's when you change the way that you look at things, that the things that you look at begin to
Starting point is 00:01:10 change. So let's wake up. Let's rise up. And let's make sense of why and how shift happens. Makes sense. This is some good shift. So I've been thinking a lot about the difference between life that happens to you and then the life that is designed by you. We often talk lately about being the architect of our recovery or of our journey, but that philosophy extends far beyond the biological terrain of our bodies. It's a complete shift in how we handle the script of our entire existence. So I was reflecting on a recent guest, his name is Jack Daly. And Jack Daly's work is probably best manifested in his book called Life by Design. Fantastic book. And Jack's premise in this book is that most people
Starting point is 00:02:05 spend more time planning a two-week vacation than planning their entire lives. So to him, life by design means taking the steering wheel with absolute intentionality. It's about scripting your exceptional life, your goals, your values, your health, and your legacy, rather than just showing up and hoping for the best. And that makes sense. But here's the good shift. I wouldn't be the architect that I am today without the teachers that showed up disguised as tragedies. The setbacks, the adversities, the traumas, and even the current battle that I am in right now with cancer, they weren't meant to stop me or stop you. I believe that they were meant to wake us up. They were the intense reminders of how precious this life actually is. When the world tries to dictate your
Starting point is 00:03:01 reality through a diagnosis or a tragedy or some sort of trauma or challenge or adversity, that is exactly when you have to double down on your design. These hard times didn't break me and they won't break you. They gave us the blueprints. They forced us to see what actually matters and reminds us that if we don't design our reality, someone or something else will. So it's time to look in the mirror. Reclaim the keys of trust that you've handed off to others and start living full out as the person that you are actually meant to be from the start. Not the version society wants or the version that circumstances suggest, but the version that you design. Make sense? That's it for today. To support the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. podcast
