Makes Sense - with Dr. JC Doornick - Good Shift - The Power of Not Making Up Your Mind - E203
Episode Date: September 2, 2026Welcome to Good Shift—our weekly series where I take one of my favorite entries from the Makes Sense Substack and bring it to life right here on the podcast. Today’s Good Shift is about the Automa...tic Yes—and why learning to pause before you commit might be one of the most powerful ways to protect the life you’re designing. Let’s get into some Good Shift. How many times have you said “yes” before you ever stopped to ask whether you actually wanted to? Inspired by an August 26th entry from Jim Kwik’s Limitless Daily, this episode explores the hidden cost of the automatic “yes”—and why every commitment misaligned with your goals, purpose, and future may actually be a “no” to the person you’re becoming. We’ll look at how people-pleasing, fear, habit, and conditioned reflexes can cause us to surrender our time, energy, attention, and carency before we’ve consciously decided where they belong. The Good Shift? You don’t have to answer right away. This is where the power of “Hmmm” comes in. By creating space between the request and your response, you give yourself an opportunity to look at the decision Whole-O-Graphically. Does this choice nourish your terrain or plant another weed? Does it support the life you’re designing, or quietly pull you away from it? Sometimes the most powerful “yes” you can give yourself is a well-placed “no.” In this episode, we explore how pausing before committing can help you reclaim your attention, protect your energy, consciously distribute your trust, and become the Architect of where your life goes next. Because your future isn’t just shaped by what you choose to do. It’s also shaped by what you finally give yourself permission to decline. Make sense? Welcome to Good Shift, our weekly series where I take one of my favorite entries from the Make Sense substack and bring it to life right here on the podcast.
Today's Good Shift is about the automatic yes.
And why learning to pause before you commit might be one of the most powerful ways to protect the life that you're designing.
Let's get into some Good Shift.
Have you noticed that the world that we live in has been doing most of the thinking for you?
that your beliefs, perceptions, reactions, fears, and doubts have been shaped by unsolicited outside noise?
How easy it's been for you to slip into that default sleepwalking mode and label it as life and reality.
Yeah, that ends here.
Welcome to the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. podcast.
This is your opportunity to start thinking for yourself, reclaim control, and step back into that role as the shock caller and dominant force of your own reality.
It's when you change the way that you look at things, that the things that you look at begin to change.
So let's wake up, let's rise up, and let's make sense of why and how shift happens.
Makes sense.
This is some good shift.
I've been diving into the August 26th entry of Jim Quicks' newest book, Limitless Daily.
And it struck a chord that resonates deeply with the work that we are doing here.
in the Make Sense ecosystem.
In this entry, Jim says,
every yes,
misaligned with your goals and purpose,
is a no to you,
to the person that you're becoming,
and to the life that you're designing.
It's easy to fall into the trap of the automatic yes.
We do it out of habit,
out of a desire to please,
or even out of fear.
But in my world,
we call that conditioned reflex,
a part of the MFTPSE,
mother, father, teacher, preacher, society, and evolution operating system that keeps us
sleepwalking. So this is where the power of hmm comes in. When a request or an opportunity
lands on your terrain, the first move shouldn't be a decision. It should be in fact a pause by just
saying, I'll think about it. Or let me get back to you. And that's what the hmm is for. You create a
space to look at the choice holographically. You're not just looking at the choice. You're not just looking
at the surface level benefit. You're also looking at how it vibrates across your entire life,
your recovery in my case, and your future self. You ask, does this yes nourish my terrain? Or is it a
seed that is being planted for a new weed? Does it align with the architect's plan? Or is it a
distraction from the observer's battlefield? When you take the time to just say, hmm, what you're doing is
you reclaim the keys of trust. You stop being careless with the currency of care, which we call
currency, and you start investing in where it actually matters and where you should spend it. In this matter,
every intentional no is a powerful yes to the life that you are actively designing. Make sense?

of distraction. If something hit home and you learn something today, give it away. That's the only
