Makes Sense - with Dr. JC Doornick - Good Shift - Who's Typing? How the Algorithm Vibe Codes You - E218

Episode Date: October 7, 2026

In this Good Shift episode, Dr. JC Doornick takes the term "vibe coding," coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in February 2025 to describe building software by simply describing what you... want to an AI, and turns it on its head. Every repeated thought is a line of code, and every algorithm is competing to write the next one for your operating system. Dr. JC explains how convenience quietly turns into surrender, why activity is not agency, and how to tell an authentic desire from an induced one. Then he walks you through the Interface Response System: perceive, pause, process, and proceed. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey everybody, it's Dr. J.C., otherwise known as the Dragon, and I want to welcome you to our new good shift series, where we take the best of the best from our Make Sense substack and bring it to you live here on the podcast. We sure hope you'll like this one, because this is some good shift. Have you noticed that the world that we live in has been doing most of the thinking for you, that your beliefs, perceptions, reactions, fears and doubts have been shaped by unsolicited outside noise? How easy it's been for you to slip into that default sleepwalking mode and label it as life and reality. Yeah, that ends here. Welcome to the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:40 This is your opportunity to start thinking for yourself, reclaim control, and step back into that role as the shock caller and dominant force of your own reality. It's when you change the way that you look at things, that the things that you look at begin to change. So let's wake up. Let's rise up and let's make sense of why and how shift happens. Makes sense. This is some good shift. The phrase vibe coding began in software. In February 2025, computer scientist Andre Carpathie used the term to describe a new way to create software with artificial intelligence.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Instead of writing every line of code by hand, A person describes what they want an ordinary language and an AI system generates the code. The human guides the process through prompts, reactions, and corrections. In its most extreme form, the person gives into the flow, stops thinking about the underlying code, and judges the result by how closely it resembles their initial intention. That is the literal meaning. But I see it pointing to something bigger. Coding happens all over the place, all the time.
Starting point is 00:01:55 We're coding our habits, attention. beliefs, relationships, health, expectations, and identity. Every repeated thought is a line of code. And every environment we participate in is like a development platform, as well as every algorithm is competing for our attention and offering to write another piece of code for our operating system. The question is not whether we are vibe coding. The question is who or what is controlling the keystrokes on the keyboard.
Starting point is 00:02:25 For thousands of years, human beings, have learned and absorbed knowledge through direct experience and observations. We watched the seasons, listened to our elders, worked with our hands, solved problems, looked one another in the eye, and developed meaning through participation. Then we built systems that could observe our behavior at a scale that no human community could previously have imagined. Social platforms learned what makes us stop scrolling. Recommendation engines learned to keep us watching.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Advertisement systems learned which fears, desires, identities, and frustrations make us click. Yes, we are being watched closely. And guess what? Just like me, you are predictable and your decision-making process is easily persuaded. The technology is not all bad. Artificial intelligence can be very useful, helping us create, learn, organize, communicate, and solve problems. The danger, however, begins when convenience quietly transforms into surrender. When we stop using the tools and the tools begin using us, an algorithm does not need to force you to do anything.
Starting point is 00:03:32 It only needs to repeatedly place certain images, stories, products, conflicts, and emotional triggers in front of you until they begin to feel like your own interests. The ethics around this tactic are a big topic these days. We believe we are choosing because we are the ones that are tapping, swiping, buying, reacting, and expressing opinions. but activity is not agency. A person can be extremely busy and completely obvious that they are living inside someone else's design. We mistake personalization for freedom, stimulation for meaning,
Starting point is 00:04:07 and familiarity for truth. Have you ever commented on your feed? I love my feed. As if you built it to your liking? The algorithm is vibe coding us. It suggests what deserves our care and attention. It trains our nervous. system to anticipate interruption and not be frustrated by it. It has somehow entered the conversation
Starting point is 00:04:29 about what matters in our lives and what doesn't. It teaches us what to fear, envy, desire, mock, and deem important. After every repetition, the suggestion becomes an actual personal preference. That preference becomes a habit and that habit becomes your identity. Once there, you become unconsciously competent at it. That means that you unknowing, respond, just like Pavlov's dogs. Eventually, we defend the code as if we wrote it ourselves. This is now happening with large language model platforms that we use, like chat GPT. When someone asked chat GPT to write something for them, the brain feels as if they wrote the whole thing themselves. Don't get me wrong here. I'm not putting it all on them. My intention is to simply
Starting point is 00:05:17 raise awareness of what's running in our blind spots. This does not mean that every thought in our head is false or every influence is malicious. It just simply reminds us that perception is selective. The brain amplifies what it has learned to notice and filters out what it considers irrelevant. If the outside world repeatedly programs us to care about outrage, comparison, scarcity, and threat, those signals can move to the front of our consciousness and relevance. Meanwhile, the quiet evidence of things like health, love, beauty, responsibility, and possibility can be pushed into the background with ease. Yes, vibe coding is grabbing your limited daily allotment of currency,
Starting point is 00:06:00 sometimes creating a reality where nothing is left for the people and things that matter most. That is why waking up is not merely a dramatic moment of realizing that social media exists. It's the daily practice of noticing the code before blindly obeying it. It is the pause between the stimulus and the response. That pause creates a space that, asked, who is benefiting from my attention right now? Is this my desire or was it unconsciously installed through repetition? Is this helping me act in accordance with my goals and dreams? Or simply keeping me activated and obedient? Did I choose this conversation or did the feed choose it for me? This is the same
Starting point is 00:06:43 interface response system that I keep returning to. Perceive, pause, process, and proceed. First, perceive the vibe entering your environment. Note the emotional aspects, the urgency, the hook, and the story being offered to you. And then pause before allowing the reflex to become a decision. Process and filter the information through your values, your body, your experience, and your long-term vision. Then, simply proceed accordingly or do not proceed at all, which is an option as well. This saves your currency for the things that matter most.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Make sense? We are not rejecting. technology here. The goal is to become that conscious vibe coder again. The deepest form of freedom is not having unlimited choices. It's knowing which choices are actually yours. So today, before you let the world tell you what matters, make something. Write one honest, imperfect paragraph. Maybe take a walk without device narrating it. Call someone and listen without checking your screen. Notice the difference between an authentic desire and an induced one. Repetition codes your life, but you can still edit the program.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Here's the good news. We're not helpless users trapped inside an invisible machine. We are actually the architects, the shock callers, and the dominant designers of our landscape. The challenge and the work is to wake up, reclaim control of the keyboard, and get back to vibe coding a reality that reflects our deepest values, not the algorithm. Make sense?
Starting point is 00:08:17 That's it for today.
