Welcome, my friends, to the uprising of the sleepwalking masses.
Welcome to the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. Dornick podcast.
Make sense.
Morning world.
Welcome to the Rise Up with Dragon podcast with your host, Dragon!
Great morning, everyone.
What a special morning it is.
One of my favorite holidays has always been Thanksgiving because whether you are the kind of person that expresses gratitude in life, you kind of have to do that day.
It's your job.
It's the rules.
So what I love about Valentine's Day is Valentine's Day is another one of those days where you usually,
just got to kind of spread the love a little bit more and everything is about love. I feel pretty
confident that I'm good at that. Part of my rise up every day is, well, first of all, we never go to
sleep angry. We have this whole set of rules in our, in our home about love and the rules of love.
Always wake up and roll over and give my chicken a kiss and a happy Valentine's Day today.
So to all of you ladies and gentlemen out there, love and appreciate all of you and a happy Valentine's
day to all of you. Make sure you do the right thing.
today, you know. Chicken and I are minimalists, so we don't really buy stuff. And that kind of unveils
this thing about like, hey, we don't have to get each other's stuff. That's just the way we are
because we express love. Our whole life is built around experiences and family, not stuff. But at the
same time, she's going to get a nice dinner tonight. I promise you. Great morning, everyone.
Excited about today because today posed a really interesting challenge that I think a lot of you guys
will relate to, I want to share it with you. One of the things that I like to do in my life is do a lot
less talking in life and more walking. You know, I find that there's so many flaws in the
personal growth and self-discovery world, not all throughout it, but there's a lot of learning and
there's a lot of knowing and not enough doing. So one of the things that I love to do is share with
you things that I'm going through and sometimes those things don't always go well.
What's so interesting about the jacuzzi experience versus the real world and that opportunity
having a pivotal experience is while you're in the jacuzzi experience, which by the way you're in
right now, by sitting here listening to me, whether you're watching this live or on the podcast.
And the podcast, by the way, timestamp, if you're listening to this podcast, it was recorded
way in the future because it's associated with my book launch.
But whatever it is that you're reading and doing and all that stuff, that does have an impact
on activating us, but all that does is it empowers you and it gets you into that dreaming of that
future state. Everything about my morning routine, what it does is it gets me out of the gutter,
because I wake up in the gutter like you every day. It's very hard not to. When you boot up your
mainframe, sometimes there's viruses left over from yesterday. Let's face it, I don't care how
optimistic and in control of your life you are. Sometimes we need some sort of an activation. And what it does,
is it gets you back on course.
An activation is not just about like pumping you up and getting you started.
It really is about doing certain things that get your mind back focused on the prize,
back focus on that compelling future.
So that's what I want to talk about today because this morning was one of those mornings
that wasn't easy.
And I'll explain why.
I'm very,
very committed to what it is that I do for a living.
I'm very committed to my book.
I'm very committed to our coaching business and Chicken and I put a lot of effort into that.
But that's not the most important thing in our lives, right?
Most important thing in our lives is family.
So family comes first, and that is something that we really follow through with.
So we've got dragon, we've got chicken, and you know we're adopting a little nine-year-old
duckie, but then there's also a pigeon.
There's a pigeon in the family, and we call her mama pigeon.
And my mom is quite a character and a special woman.
I won't share her age.
She's not 35.
Very special woman, you know, dancer her whole life, dance with Martha.
Graham and, you know, she was a professional tennis player. I mean, my mom's amazing. But my mom now is kind of like
a little bit of a free-loven hippie, a little bit of a Jane Goodhall, you know, she's a wildlife
rehabilitator and stuff. So my mom, who, you know, I worry about because I'm her protector and I'm her
guy, right? I'm her man in life right now. She just went away for three weeks to, and this is important
for everybody to understand. My mom is just shy of 80 and she just by herself went away for three weeks to
St. Thomas Island and stayed in a youth hostel. That's what my mom did. So I had no idea where she's
staying from what I understand. She didn't communicate a lot, but from what I understand,
she had a beautiful beach in front of her and all this stuff. But she was also staying in a
youth hostel with random people from all over the world coming through. Like my mom was
sleeping in bunk beds with strangers every night for three weeks. Anyway, that's a whole other story.
Love and appreciate my mom. What a special person. But anyway, my point is this. My mom came home
last night from her trip and all of her connecting flights and she got home. So you understand that I go
to sleep. One of the things that I cherish is my sleep because I have to get my sleep so I can come
strong to you in the morning. But mom's flight landed at about 1130 last night at JFK. And JFK is about,
it's a good 40, 45 minutes away. So calculate that in your head because I am not letting mom a pigeon
come home without a family there to meet her. And chickens there as well. So we decided,
Hey, mama, we're coming to pick you up.
And she was so happy.
My mom's so grateful.
So long story short, we picked her up, which meant we picked her up at about 12.
Everything went well.
So Chicken and I probably didn't get to bed because we had to take her home, bring her
suitcases up, make sure she was all settled in, make sure there was nobody waiting to kill
her in her house and all that stuff.
So then Chicken and I actually probably got to bed at about 2 a.m.
So here I am calculating it because Dragon gets up at 4.30 a.m.
So now I'm looking at two and a half hours of sleep.
So there's the wrench, right?
There's the curveball that all of a sudden, think about what happens in your mind when you're fully committed to your schedule and success and all of this stuff.
And all of a sudden, the curveball is that, hey, you're only going to get two and a half hours of sleep.
So the immediate reaction to that is you go into victim mode.
Think about this because every one of you is going to get a curveball today.
You might be relating to this because you might have a curveball outside of that.
But the curveball comes and the first instinct that you have in your brain,
is what you're not going to do now because of the curveball.
Great quote here today.
If you are under something, you ain't getting over it, right?
So all of a sudden, I was a victim and I was under this circumstance that I was only
going to get two and a half hours of sleep last night.
So I ran through all of this program in my head and I said, okay, you got to get your act
together, JC, because, you know, you do your rise up in the morning and people like listening
to that.
And then I don't know if any of you that listened to the podcast or are watching the Facebook
live. Right after that, I'm going to speak for two hours to, you know, some amazing growing thought
leaders, you know, in our morning what we call 120 huddle. So I'm going to get my act together.
But I, and I, so it's not just about me getting sleep. It's just about, it's about me
activating things. So, you know, I caught myself in that drift right there. I was, I was about to just
bail. I was about to just like send out some sort of message and say, I can't do it. So I was under
something. It's very hard to make decisions in life when your head is in the mouth of a lion, right?
So what I did is I decided, okay, so I have to pick apart my rise up in the morning,
which has to do with how I wake up and I read and I journal and I go through this like
comfortable hour of just filling my head up with personal growth and I write and I go
through all these activities and then I go to the gym.
So it's interesting because today I had to pick and pick apart my rise up because I had to
get at least four hours of sleep.
That's what I figured out like in times of, I like to get like seven, but in times
of disorder. It's like you got to put your, you got to put your fatigues on and army boots on.
Because I made a decision. I said, I'm going to follow through with my commitments because that's
what I like to see when I look in the mirror. I got up and I just picked and I said, okay, I'm
a quick little cup of coffee. In my, ironically, I have coffee in my Guinness mug. So I have
my cup of coffee because I just, you know, that was one of the things I chose. I drink a ton of water
and then I skipped my reading, which I'm addicted to. I love to read in the morning and get my mind
in the right place and then I love to write. So I skipped those two things and I just went to the gym.
So when I walked into the gym today, I was a hot mess. It's funny because there's this woman that
rides Peloton next to me and she was there and she was already in it. You know, and she's looking at me
like, are you okay? Because I was coming in later than I normally do. That was kind of a funny moment.
But anyway, my point is, is that I got on the bike and I just muscled through it and boom, it happened.
It happened. I got activated. And what happened during that round,
ride is I started to sweat and I started to get, you know, it wasn't easy, but I started to
sweat and I started to get my body activated and boom, there I was again, living in the future
once again. And the only other aspect of my morning that I can't get rid of. And the reason why I'm
sharing this with you everybody is first of all, you should have a morning routine. When my book
comes out, I explain my whole routine, but you don't need to read the book to have a morning
routine. You should have a structure where you get up and attack the day. And it starts for me with
gratitude. And then, you know, and also it's, it's Valentine's Day. So the two things that I chose
to activate my day today was as soon as I woke up and I went from unconscious to conscious. And this is a
big moment for all of you. Because that first thought in my head, it was interesting. I actually was
somehow coherent enough to understand what was happening to me in that moment. I woke up and I had
all these negative thoughts in my head. And the first thing I did with those thoughts before I got up to
just do the coffee in the gym, and you can tell how I'm talking. This is not somebody that is not
ready for the day. So the first thing I did was I identified that I was drifting. And then I also
identified that the negative thoughts in my head were connected to things that were completely out of my
control. That was a huge step this morning. So if you are listening to this or watching this,
and you're still in a bit of a little bit of a funk, right?
I promise you, if you analyze your funk right now,
it's connected directly.
It is not a distant cousin.
It's like a brother or a sister or a wife or a husband
to something that's out of your control.
So I identified that and I said, well, that's silly.
I'm not in control of that.
I'm going to focus on what I'm in control of.
And I got up and I gave thanks.
The first thing I did is I started to give thanks.
And you know what thanks does?
gratitude, it's a super highway from going from yesterday to today.
So as soon as you get into gratitude, you can't be thankful for yesterday.
You can only be in a state of gratitude for what you have, right?
The only thing that gratitude connects me to in the future is the potential for it.
But right here in this present moment, when I look at what I have and what's in my control,
everything is perfect.
So I do that.
I get my water in.
I have my cup of coffee.
I go to the gym and I swear to God, I walked out of that gym.
and if I had a cape on, I could have taken off and flown, right?
That's why I shared this with you today is because if you don't get activated in the morning,
what happens is is the morning runs you.
The day runs you rather than you win the morning and run the day.
Take that for what it's worth for you.
Go into some form of action.
If you're following the podcast or the Facebook Lives,
reach out to me and ask me some questions.
Tell me what it is that you do.
Get a structure together.
Get a couple of things just like your family.
that are non-negotiables in it, and I shared what mine were, but get activated. And all of a sudden,
if you do that with regularity, you'll start to notice that you're having more, quote-unquote,
better days. And remember, a good day is a day that you just focused on what it is that you're
in control of, what matters most and where you're going. A bad day is when you reached out with
your hand and offered yesterday to come in. When you opened up the door to the things that
that really, really don't matter, but also are out of your control.
Take this with you today in closing for this great morning.
Anything that you're bummed out about is connected to something that's out of your control.
Anything.
So catch that drift, catch my drift, and then shift.
And the easiest way to do that is to get activated.
Health is always important, too.
So I'm going to be perfect on program.
Love and appreciate you.
Have an amazing day.
Makes sense.
