Welcome to the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. Dornick podcast.
This podcast covers topics that expand human consciousness and performance.
On the Make Sense podcast, we acknowledge that it's who you are that determines how well
what you do works, and that perception is a subjective and acquired taste.
What we know is that when you change the way you look at things, the things that you look at
begin to change.
Welcome to the uprising of the sleepwalking masses.
Welcome to the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. Dornick podcast.
Make sense.
Great morning world.
Great morning humans.
This is your boy, Dr. J.C. Dornick, aka. The Dragon.
And welcome to another edition of the Make Sense with Dr. J.C. podcast.
Today's episode unpacks the massive elephant in the room slash challenge that most humans in the world,
specifically in America, face.
and that is this idea at this time of the year where people start setting their health goals for the new year
and getting to the other side where we actually follow through and move from setting goals to being someone that gets their health goals this new year.
So in today's discussion, I'm going to unveil both the problem and the solution to not only getting what you want in 2025,
not only getting what you need, not only getting what you even must have, but a whole lot more.
This podcast is sponsored and supported, keeps the lights on by the Make Sense Academy.
The Make Sense Academy is a private community that provides headspace, tools, and strategies
for you to stop just going through life and start growing through life, if that's what you're
into.
Check out the Make Sense Academy located on the school platform.
It's risk-free, and we even offer a money-back guarantee.
So I'll see you inside where everything will begin to make sense.
excited about this episode here. It's something that very much resonates with me. I mean, I've been a health
transformation coach for almost 20 years, lost 80 pounds, 20 years ago gone on to help thousands and
thousands of people. When I advertised this, it was advertised as something that promotes
fast weight loss, fast effective weight loss. And the reason why I did that is I know that's what
everybody is looking for. And that's actually part of the problem, which we're going to discuss today.
But the truth is, is I call this the Stoic Diet.
Now, I'm a big fan of the Stoic Principles,
great Stoics like Marcus Aurelius,
and if you ever want to get into that,
you know, just read his book, Meditations.
But this episode's going to address the elephant in the room,
and that is this real struggle.
Sometimes people don't think this is a real struggle,
but this real struggle that people face,
like I said before, setting health goals,
which is something a lot of people are engaged in right now,
and there's a science behind that,
but then following through to achieve the results
that they ultimately desire.
It's never a problem for people to set goals.
Some people won't set goals,
but that's the easy part.
It's following through,
getting to the other side where we get them
and we accomplish our goals, full circle,
and not start to diminish them.
This episode is being, you know,
promoted live in the latter part of November in 2024.
So you can just imagine all of the holiday things at play
and all of the programmed things that we are just conditioned to think about ourselves during this time.
There's so much adversity going on at this time if you've been trained to look at it that way.
The following structure that I'm about to offer you, it's actually a structure and a strategy.
Just understand that it was created based on the assumption that you're here and you've already
determined that you have the desire to make 2025, the year that you actually really
reclaim control of your health, becoming the follow-through version of yourself, the dominant force
of yourself. That version of you that says you're going to do something and follows through.
So I'm just going to present this to you based on that assumption. If you have already,
though, decided that you do not want to follow through, I know it sounds silly for somebody
that has already made that decision, but if you've decided that you're not going to follow through,
you know, perhaps that's because you're overwhelmed right now or you're feeling like a victim of
circumstance, who knows what it is. But if that's you, or maybe even that person that perhaps
has already fallen prey to this illusion, which is an unconscious illusion, that this next year
coming up will be different. You're going to follow through with the things that you say you're
going to do this year using the same way that you did last year and the year before. And the
illusion is set up because you forgot that they didn't work. In fact, they never work. If you took the
time to look at the statistics, very often we're executing a structure that doesn't work for anybody.
So if you're either somebody that hasn't made the decision and you're not going to,
or you're somebody that's already fallen prey into that attraction of the illusion, well, then the
full proof strategy, let me say that again, the full proof strategy that I'm about to offer you,
it's not going to resonate with you at all. So just take a pause on that right there. Isn't that an
interesting thing where as human beings, we're very often so stubborn. It's the idea of beating a
dead horse. The horse is dead. Why do you keep beating it? We just have this thing where human beings
will know something's not going to work and insist upon doing it and completely having a bias
for anything other than what we've decided to do. And what's fascinating about that is if you look
at the underlying structure of that strategy, it's a hundred percent failure. So you got to back up and say,
well, that must be the goal, is to have an excuse to not have to follow through. So just digest that.
You know, I always say, chew on it. You don't have to swallow it. You can spit it out.
But chew on it. Who am I? And what brings the value and the validity of this conversation?
Well, it's been 18 years now since I lost 80 pounds and kept it off. I'm 53 years old.
And I'm practicing and living a healthy lifestyle like I've never done before. But also during those 18 years, I've been
coaching thousands and thousands of other people just like you. And the reason why I can say just like
you is because when you coach thousands and thousands of people, you get a variety of just about
everything else. And I've been coaching them to not only lose weight, which is a big topic in our
country right now and the world, but also to keep it off. That's the interesting part. When you meet
somebody that's got a transformation story, but it's been 18 years that they've maintained it and
moved on to other levels, that's what you want to learn about. So I've come to the conclusion.
and I need you to know this, that anyone, and that includes you, anyone can be somebody that sets
their health goals and gets their goals if they take action on what I'm about to share. And it might not
be what you think. Remember, I'm calling this the stoic diet. This is going to be an example of what it
would be like to have Marcus Aurelius as your health coach, right, with a little bit of my knowledge.
So here's an important distinction to make right now. First of all, it's important to understand that
All of this stuff that's gone on in your life, it's not your fault.
The way that you currently look at the world and your relationship with food and other dopamine-driven
addictions that we have, things that we do that make us feel good in the interim, those things
have been hardwired into your brain by who?
By your programmers, your mother, your father, your teacher, your preacher, including society.
Think about what you consume all day.
We very often step back from what we consume all day and don't see.
especially with our kids right now that we're being brainwashed and our brains are being programmed by
what we consume all day in society. Remember what it is that we consume with regularity ends up being
what we assume with regularity. And then we've moved on even past society, mother, father, teacher,
preacher society and even look at this idea that evolution since the dawn of man, evolution has been
paying forward what it learned. Most of what it is that you see,
and how you interpret things, your relationship with reality and things like food and success
and all of that stuff, it's not your fault.
You're looking at that because somebody else taught you.
Secondly, nobody is special and unique in the sense that they can't win.
There's no such person that can't win on a massive scale.
Yes, I will agree with you.
Everyone is separate and unique in their life experiences, their situations and scenarios,
and also their headspace and their current reality and how their brains have been programmed to
perceive and respond to the realities of life. Yes, that makes you special and unique. We all come
from the same place. It's called the Big Bang. Everybody can succeed. So this is why in my realm,
when I do my coaching, this is why I use a variety of special tools and different products in our
system to accommodate the variety of starting points and current realities. So what's your starting point?
what's your current reality? Because when you look at it, that's where you start to fall prey to think
that you don't get to succeed. So let's face it, we live in a society that has taught us that we
cannot get healthy on our own. How do we know this? Well, we're learning through powerful advertising
from billions and billions of dollars of advertising spent. That if you don't succeed, we used to
say, try and try again. But if you don't succeed, stop spinning your wheels and take this drug.
Now, that might not be you.
And by the way, if that is you, it's totally understandable.
That's why we have strategies and systems for people that are in that current reality.
Understand that the idea is that the drug is going to stop spinning the wheels for you.
I have news for you.
This is really, really exciting news for you to consider.
If your brains have been programmed, as I'm saying, and you buy into that idea, you know what that means?
that means that your brains are programmable, like a hard drive or programmable. Well, guess what?
If that's true, you know what that means? If your brains are programmable, that means they're reprogramable, too.
After 18 years of coaching every kind of scenario in person, in every kind of situation, I can wholeheartedly say this.
Everyone can win. They just need the right structure and systems, and they need to follow what I'm about to present with you.
And I'm going to lay out what I call the 10 basic principles required for anyone to achieve their health
and nutrition goals and financial goals, by the way.
They all work the same with the help of programs like the one I offer or whatever program or
strategy you're already thinking about using.
Yes, you can use the strategy and program that you're considering using, but you've got to
follow these 10 steps.
But first, I want to give you a disclaimer.
It's important first that we make the following observation and distinction about
what the statistics are that unveil things like obesity and disease and things like that.
So I think that this is an important time to just understand the 11th commandment,
and that is thou shalt not kid thyself.
Folks, let's practice some present time conscious, logical thinking right now.
You have to take your opinion and check it and your ego.
And just come with me for a second.
The staggering statistics that we see, like the rise of disease, obesity, malnourishment,
which doesn't mean you're thin. Remember, when you're obese, you're also malnourished most of the time.
And then also this massive onslaught of the loss of lean muscle mass. Those statistics were not
created by the few. Those stats were actually created by the masses, otherwise known as the herd.
So here's an interesting strategy if you want to leave right now. But I recommend that you don't,
because you're going to hear the 10. If you're planning on running again in 2025 with the herd,
and it's pretty easy to see.
Waiting till after the holidays
and starting on the magical January 1st
with the New Year's resolution,
that's the herd,
that's where the statistics are made.
We also see the herd, by the way,
moving on things in trends and fads.
And by the way, I'm not saying anything bad about them.
It's just an observation of the herd mentality.
So the herd's also moving with things like intermittent fasting,
keto, carnivore.
And now we're seeing the uprising,
and I don't know if you're aware of this,
this of a $120 billion projected industry by big pharma as if they needed any more money with weight
loss drugs. A lot of people don't understand that when you're doing something like this,
and I understand why, a lot of my clients do. That's you running with the herd, and that's where
the statistics come from. So I'm not here to tell you what you're doing is wrong or that any of those
popular strategies don't work. In fact, I integrate many of those strategies like intermittent fasting,
keto and all of that into my program. I'm only inviting you to make an observation of the statistics
and consider breaking the chains of insanity and join me and taking the road less traveled,
which is where the things that you want end up. The road less traveled is called self-discipline.
Now, self-discipline is something that you might automatically say, I don't have that,
but it can be built just like a muscle. So let's take a look at what I call the top 10 steps to build
self-discipline and manifest your best self in 2025. And you'll see that if you follow these
steps and you have a program and you have everything that you need in place, you're going to
experience success like you've never done before. Let's go step one. Self-discipline starts
with finding your purpose. You have to have a purpose. You have to have a reason. What's interesting
about human beings, and that includes you, is that they always follow through, always follow through
and get through hard times and say things like,
I feel like I'm hardly working,
when they have a good reason to.
Do you feel that way?
In fact, the most common reason people quit their health programs
or quit on their 2025 goals,
it's going to be something that has nothing to do,
typically with the excuses that they give you.
What are the excuses typically?
I don't have any money.
This is bad timing or I just don't have the ability to follow through.
It's just who I am.
There's too much going on right here.
The most common reason they quit, though, is this.
And this comes from 20 years of experience.
They forgot why they were doing it.
I promise you, anytime you're in the mode and getting ready to retreat,
I promise you in that moment, you forgot not only where you were going, but why.
I give a lot of analogies of what happens when a human being not only knows what they want,
but also what they must have with urgency.
Steve Jobs once said something very, very connected to this. He says, you must be really passionate about what you do and why you do something because success is really difficult. Let's just understand that winning and success is very difficult, especially if you've never done it before. If you're not passionate and completely laser focused on your purpose, well, then you just won't follow through. So if you're not following through, that's probably what's going on. So take your
simple goal of say weight loss or maybe getting in shape or even starting an exercise regimen
and link it to something really, really important to you. For me, it would be like me getting
healthy for my kids. I would die for my kids. So of course I'll live for my kids. Review that purpose
daily. There should be nothing more important. No artwork, nothing on your walls, nothing more
important than your purpose and the things that matter most. So review it daily and then you know what you do
every now and then, review it again, especially when you get weak. So the second step, commitment.
Now, this one, once again, is something that you might automatically knee-jerk say, I'm not good
at commitment. I want you to put that on hold and come with me for a second. Now that you have a strong
purpose, a proverbial North Star, something that matters as much as air would matter if your
head was underwater. You must now fully commit. Commit to what? Taking the necessary action steps to
support your purpose and your goal.
Marcus Aurelius, the famous Stoic and Emperor, said this,
turn your desires into stone.
He says, quench your appetites and keep your mind centered only on itself.
Learn to look at the action steps and program that you're committed to as the steps that are
in support and leverage your desired state into reality.
That's why it's so important to have that laser focus on what you want, because then you
can just see logically that the things you're doing support it committing to yourself and to them
and only those things that's it in connection with that learning how to identify anything and anyone else
that doesn't support your goals we'll talk a little bit more about that your goals and your dreams
and saying to them hey i appreciate the effort but no thanks no room for rent right step three
show up every day there's another one like commitment
that you go, oh, I never show up every day.
Pause on that, put it on bold, because you're going to build this muscle called discipline.
Show up every day.
We must learn to show up.
Every day, no matter what.
Let's just acknowledge that we must learn how to do that.
And you will.
Life presents us with many, many distractions, doesn't it?
As well as inconvenient events that easily justify and give you permission, which is what excuses are.
I heard somebody say today that an excuse is an egg that has a very thin shell and it's packed with a lie.
Isn't that a good one? So these excuses justified by these inconvenience events, we have them up our sleeve.
It's like they're waiting to have a reason to excuse you, but they never excuse you from achieving your goals and dreams, do they?
There's nothing that is important enough that you could use to excuse you from your goals and dreams.
Make a decision to show up based on that and contend forward no matter what.
That's just a decision it starts with.
Expect things to be difficult in the beginning.
We use a term in our community called praction.
And praction means you have to practice being in action and you're typically not good at it at first.
But I promise you this.
it's never going to be easy. If you're looking for easy, there's no such thing. It's never going to be
easy. In fact, not doing anything is even more difficult because of what it causes. But I will say this,
it does get easier, doesn't it? Step four, practice what the Stoics call voluntary discomfort.
This is a really big one because it's a shift. Remember, if you change the way you look at things,
the things you look at change. So once again, Marcus Aurelius spoke often about forcing yourself to
refrain or put yourself in uncomfortable situations and refrain from the things that you comfortably
do every day. And you have to start with the little things. You know, it might not be time for an ice
plunge or it might not be time to like do a seven day fast or something like that. Start with the
little things like maybe refraining from complaining when things don't go well. You'll have to catch
yourself because you're programmed to do it. Me too. Or maybe even if that's too much to think,
maybe even file that complaint, but not do it with your whole being.
And practice making the complaint and everything connected to it short-lived.
That might be your first step of voluntary discomfort.
Look at the things that you are not allowing yourself to do.
Because as soon as you decide to do only something to support your goals and dreams,
you're also going to notice some things that you're not allowing yourself to do,
such as maybe eating sweets, unnecessary carbs, getting rid of people,
alcohol, or even being mean. Maybe part of your goal is to not be mean to people. And you're going to be
training by refraining from doing these things, voluntary discomfort, to become more disciplined.
You see, you don't have to be disciplined to become disciplined. Discipline like a muscle,
like motivation is something that is generated along the way. That's a very important distinction.
When we practice voluntary discomfort, we're also arming our,
ourselves to handle tough times of adversity when you know that they're always coming, like the
you know what hitting the fan. There's no way you're going to get to the mountaintop without having
to climb the mountain. My coaching style, just to give that as a focus, my coaching style is focus
more on performance and progress rather than achievement and perfection. So if you're focused on
achievement and perfection, you're focused on outcomes that you for the most part don't
as much as you want, but performance and progress are 100% in your control. You dig? I know that
you're going to get stronger and more confident along the way. For now, we're just going to take
little baby steps forward. Forward is forward each day until the day that you feel ready to take a
big boy or a big girl step. Slow and steady wins the race and you're going to evolve into a whole
new you. There's a concept called peak to peak. In order to see a mountain by,
behind a mountain, you have to get on top of that first mountain peak to get a peak at the next
mountain. Make sense? Number five, claim control. This is a big one. There's something in the stoic
principle called the dichotomy of control. Look it up. It's really cool. And in the dichotomy of
control, we learn to differentiate the things that we do control versus the things that we don't.
There is literally no value in trying to control something that you can't control. Think about that.
I'm going to go control something that is out of my control.
That's like trying to build an airplane in the sky.
Or even something even more silly, as Alan Watts would say.
It's like trying to eat the ocean with a fork.
It's impossible, a waste of your time and energy,
and also packed full of excuses that will let you think that you can't do it.
Focus your energy and your efforts on the little things,
like what you eat, when you eat, what you drink,
What goes in your mouth and comes out of your mouth? All 100% in your control. When uncontrollable things arise,
learn to recognize them as such and release them from your participation. It's okay to observe them and
continue forging forward. Why? Because you can't do anything about them. I will help you with this if you
end up coaching with me when we check in. Sometimes you need somebody else, a running mate, a coach,
a mentor of sorts, a friend to point something out that you've lost sight of. It's called
drifting. Number six, never play the victim. The first thing that happens when things happen in life
is that we think, because we've been trained to and brainwashed, that it's something that's
happening to us. That's what happens. Things happen and it's happening to us. It's like that
happened and we're secondary. So when adversity strikes or inconvenient things arise, which is a hundred percent
guaranteed, making it hard for you to follow through, doesn't it?
Catch yourself falling prey to the role of the victim.
Refocus your goals and dreams.
Get focused again on your goals and dreams and recognize and remember the action
steps that you're committed to that are there to leverage your goals and dreams into
existence.
That's why you're doing it.
If you forget why you're doing something hard and the value of it, you'll stop doing it.
You're doing those things to leverage your goals and dreams and this thing that you've wanted, connected to something that matters most to you, into existence.
You see, everything that happens happens for you when you start doing that, practicing the dichotomy at control.
Learn from your challenges, your slip-ups, your letdowns, and adversities, and get stronger from it.
And I'll tell you, in my experience in 20 years, I've never seen somebody learn something from winning only from their failures, their setbacks, their letdowns.
Number seven, practice delayed gratification.
This is the ability to practice allowing yourself to be patient in getting what you want.
Think about how silly it is, how we will do something for one week and assume that if we have it, we won, and if we don't, we lost.
Full-scale health transformation, which is more than just losing weight, by the way.
I'm talking about that place where you don't come back because it's not you anymore.
So full-scale health transformation, it takes time.
It's a full-circle feeling of control, changing the way you look at things and everything.
It takes time.
Remember, your brain is hardwired to see things and react the way that it has for years now.
It will take time to see the change from moving from health unconscious to health-conscious.
You understand what I'm saying?
We encourage people on our program to not weigh themselves every day for this reason.
And use several what we call non-scale victories.
and non-scale metrics, like the way their clothes fit, their energy, the way they're sleeping,
their mindset, and use those things to track their progress as well. Also important to fight the
urge to think that health transformation is an overnight thing. The commercials and the companies,
that's what they advertise. And that's why people are choosing this quick fix idea. And I totally
get it. It's very attractive. If you're looking at two things, doing something the hard way and the
easy way to get the same result, what are you going to do? But,
step back and recognize that billions of dollars are being spent on that brainwashing.
Health transformation is a lifetime commitment. And it's important to come to grips with that.
The likes of your commitment to things like breathing, drinking water, sleeping, and hopefully
being a good human. Make sense? Number eight, ignore naysayers, one of my favorite, right? We get to
filter out what we don't want and allow in what we do. When you begin to get results, take note of this.
when you begin to get results, and by the way, especially if you're working with somebody like me,
that happens fast, the results. Those that are not contending for their dreams around you are those
that have perhaps maybe tried and fallen by the wayside and quit or failed, which doesn't make them
feel good about themselves. They're going to give you some shit. They're going to give you negative
feedback and provide non-motivating, non-supporting atmospheres for you. Often, including
sabotage. Why? Because you pulling away from the pack, and that's pretty easy to do in this world,
unless you bring people along with you, which is another thing. But you pulling away from the pack
highlights that they are not. And that's where they're saying, they hate you, because they ain't
you. Do your best to remove yourself from these what I call flow burglars, people that steal your
flow. Remove yourself from those surroundings and engage in the psychological safety of communities
where there are like-minded, supportive, and inspiring people that cheer you along and celebrate
what you get your wins. And also pick you up when you're down. Don't sabotage you.
This is why anybody I work with is going to be placed into an awesome psychological safe haven,
optimal health community full of all those things through Facebook groups, Zoom hangouts,
all of that stuff. Make sense? Number nine, this is about mentorship and choosing the right person.
find wise people to emulate.
Taking advice from somebody that has not accomplished
what it is that you want to accomplish.
It's like taking directions to navigate the twists and turns of life
from a newborn baby.
It just doesn't make any sense.
And there's a lot of people out there teaching people
to do things that they haven't done.
In looking for a coach, a mentor,
or even a running mate or a friend,
find somebody that gets you,
somebody that's walked in your shoes,
or perhaps even somebody that has a lot of real-time experience with walking in your shoes
through helping other people that have walked in your shoes.
And somebody that truly understands what it's like to be you.
If you're talking to somebody, you should feel like they completely get you.
And this is what it would sound like.
You mean like this and you go, yes, amen.
So this creates what I call in my system called autonomy support of coaching.
What that means is providing support for people, and you can do this for your friends as well,
providing support for people that's right for you where you're giving them the attention and support
that is custom made for them and their journey. So that looks like walking beside somebody,
rather than being in front pulling them or from behind pushing them. Take note of those things.
These are really, really important. We're at number 10. We did it. Honestly, review your day,
every day. Allow yourself to become transparent and vulnerable to your imperfections. Remember,
where your lessons come from. Growth doesn't come from winning all the time. It comes from
identifying where growth needs to happen. There is literally no value in lying to yourself or
pretending that you did something you didn't do. That's something you would do if you want to get out of it.
But you're not going to get out of it. You're committed now. This is a coping mechanism,
this lying that we use to protect our self-esteem. And that's something that comes from our mother,
father, teacher, preacher as well. By avoiding the confrontation and the uncomfortable truths,
what we do is we have this perception and illusion that we can maintain a positive self-image.
However, when we're all alone, all we see in that mirror is a liar, somebody that is not impeccable
to their word from the four agreements.
Back to number one, that idea of identifying your purpose.
Remember, that purpose has a lot of value and a lot of worth, and it's worth you checking
yourself to avoid wrecking yourself. On the other hand, in reviewing your day, also make note of
everything that you did in a positive way. Learn how to celebrate your victories, even the smallest
ones. Remember, you're probably going to be doing a lot of things that you weren't doing before.
So that's why we seek progress, not perfection, performance versus achievement. There's always
room for improvement even on your best day. But this transformation thing, it's a
journey that takes a lifetime. So where do you go from here? If you have that rumble in your belly,
and you know what I mean, of excitement mixed with fear and urgency, to make some changes and reclaim
control of your life if it's the right time. And it should be if you're unsatisfied with life,
but you have to have urgency with your health, your mindset, your finances, and recognize that you
can expect different results doing the same thing as last year. Well, then I just encourage you
to take an action step today. So here are a few easy ones based on what I just shared. Identify what
you must have right now. Not what you want or just need, but like air if your head's underwater and
you're struggling, something that you must have in your life and why. Find a goofproof,
structured program and system because it's got to be something you can do. Don't choose something
too difficult that you've never been able to do before. Start off with something structured,
goofproof, and simple.
and make sure that whatever you do, it includes mentorship,
guidance, accountability, as well as all that community support,
putting all the pieces together.
If you don't have one, contact me.
I'd be honored to just simply have a chat,
no cost about your goals and dreams,
and show you what your program would look like
and also lay out what it would cost.
In fact, I also have what we call the Make Sense Academy,
and that's if you have a program,
but you're looking for the support,
the community. That's a private community that we have, which provides that psychological safe haven
where you can stop going through life and start growing through life. That's the Make Sense Academy.
Check that out. Review the step and add them into your commitment. Don't just set this floor level
commitment to just do what you've always tried to do. Make it sexier, right? Add these things and
acknowledge them to your commitment. You deserve to do this right and experience what people call the
good life, your best life. And I promise you this, although this may seem very, very difficult and
like, wow, that's a lot of stuff, even though you know it all is necessary. And that might be the way
you look at it from where you stand, I can promise you that one day soon, once you take action and you
start that traction idea, practicing being an action, one day soon, you're going to actually
not only think it's easy, but it's going to be addicting. Just imagine the day that you'll be
addicted to contending for better health and happiness. And as someone that has lived on the other
side for almost 18, 19 years, I can tell you something. The juice is worth the squeeze.
So love and appreciate you. Hope you enjoyed this. Reach out. Touch somebody else today. Reach out
and let me know how I can help you. Have a great day.
