Starting point is 00:00:00 If you want to pump your body and expand your mind, there's only one place to go. MIND, MIND, MIND, MIND, MIND, MIND, with your hosts. Saldas Defano, Adam Schaefer, and Justin Andrews. In this episode of MIND, pump the world's top fitness health and entertainment podcast. All those things. We answer fitness and health questions asked by listeners just like you. And the way we open the episode is with our introductory portion. This is where we mention our sponsors,
Starting point is 00:00:27 where we talk about current events. We talk about our lives. So I'm gonna give you the breakdown of this entire episode. We started by talking about how hot it was here in the Bay Area, sweltering. Yeah, hot. I think Justin called it ball hot. It was very, very hot outside.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Very sweaty ball. Now he did leave a drink in his car while we were working all day on the hot sun, but then he went out to check his drink and it was still cold. How is this possible? Magic. He had a mere cup. Now, mere makes good-looking, insulated cups
Starting point is 00:00:59 that keep your beverages hot or cold magically. It's not magic, it's actually science, but it seems like magic. Anyhow, we have a discount for you. If you go to mere.com, that's miir.com. forward slash mind pump. Use the code mind pump, get 25% off your entire first order. Then we talk about two behemoths in the gym industry.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Gold gym and 24-hour fitness, closing down facilities. Gold gym actually went bankrupt. I know they filed for that. And they fired people in not so cool ways. Pretty cold. And we talked about Starbucks. 15,000 locations they're closing 400, but they're gonna be moving to delivery instead,
Starting point is 00:01:40 or pick up and delivery. Then we talked about spot reduction, the myth of spot reduction, Justin brought up some enlightening, fun facts about Jeffrey Dahmer. Yeah. Everybody wants to know this. Feel good stuff.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Then we talked about Apple's valuation, $1.5 trillion. Isn't that insane? Then we talked about vitamin D and deficiency and its link to coronavirus symptoms. Now, here's a thing. If your vitamin D is low, supplementing with vitamin D is a very effective way to bring it up.
Starting point is 00:02:11 However, if your vitamin D levels are good, supplementing with vitamin D, not a good idea. How do you know where your vitamin D levels are? Well, you can either go to the doctor, ask them for an order to the lab, go get your blood drawn, do the whole thing, or you can stay at home, go on EverlyWell.com, that's EVERLYWEL.com, use the code MindPump and get 15% off a vitamin D test delivered right to your door. It comes to your door, take the test, mail it back, then you can find out if you need to
Starting point is 00:02:42 take vitamin D or not. Then we talked about a study done on identical twins, vegan versus omnivore, kind of interesting, just in product, some more science stuff about ass squatches. What? Then we talked about Bill and Ted, the new Bill and Ted coming out, we're excited about that. Then we talked about how people are trying to get Pawl Patrol canceled. What is wrong with you guys? What's happening?
Starting point is 00:03:03 It's a cartoon, leave it alone. Then we got into the fitness questions. The first question, this person has trouble activating their chest with bench presses and dumbbell presses. What can they do? Next question, this person wants to improve strength endurance. So this is the ability to do high reps, but maintain your strength. And they also want to know which maps work out is best for this. Maps hit is on sale. It's 50% off this month. That's a great program, by the way, if you like strength endurance. The next question, this person wants to know if they're too old to get into power lifting. And then the final question, they want to know how we would advise someone with body
Starting point is 00:03:42 dysmorphia. What kind of advice we have for them. Also, this month I had mentioned this earlier, maps hit is 50% off. So hit stands for high intensity interval training. Now, our hit program is different because it uses weights. You're going to build strength along with burning a ton of calories. This means as you get leaner, you don't lose any muscle. One of the drawbacks of burning tons of calories or programs that burn tons of calories
Starting point is 00:04:07 is sometimes the body tries to adapt by losing muscle. In other words, your metabolism actually slows down. Matt with proper high intensity interval training, at least not the way Maps does it. So again, this program is 50% off. It comes with everything you need to follow the workout, including video demos and workout blueprints. Here's how you get the 50% off, it comes with everything you need to follow the workout, including video demos and workout blueprints.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Here's how you get the 50% off. Go to mapshit.com, M-A-P-S-H-I-T, dot com, and use the code hit 50. That's H-I-T, 5.0, no space for the discount. Hey, speaking of hot, it is hot. We finally hit our little hot air heat wave you know I've been at the pool the last two days. It's blazing out notice my Color oh yeah, what are you doing are you sitting out getting as your pull open your captain tan? Well my my my sister-in-law has one so we take Max over there when it's been getting
Starting point is 00:04:59 We've been introducing him to the pool. I want to get him swim I'm trying to get on some lessons. Friends with pools is like magical. Yeah, you don't want to own a pool. You have to know friends with a pool. Dude, you are looking a little dark. Thank you. Justin looks the same. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I mean, I just, I burn. I stay white. You see the colors white or red. Now, am I getting a few freckles though? When it gets really hot, you have to put shoes on your, on your bulldogs when you get them for a walk. You know, I mean, you ever seen put shoes on your bulldogs when you get them for a walk. Shoes of them. You know what I mean? You ever seen that with dogs to put a piece on that?
Starting point is 00:05:26 You know, not where I live. So I live in a really nice shaded area, lots of trees. Yeah. Otherwise you would have to. I don't know. I'm not gonna ask fault or whatever. They're, pause are pretty durable. That's the word I'm looking for.
Starting point is 00:05:41 But they get hot a lot. I don't know, yeah. Even like some beaches where the sand gets like blazing. But they get hot, they look. I don't know, yeah, like even like some beaches where the sand gets like blazing hot, I've seen my dog run and then just like freak out because it's so hot, like so they feel it. What do you do? Just dip their feet in the water?
Starting point is 00:05:55 I mean, he breathes. Oh wow. Still full. We want to hit shit. That's bad person. I know, that's full. I'll go pick him up, you know, like phone call for PETA coming here.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Hey, it's funny to watch because he's like, ah, wow, wow, because I'm feeling the same call. I'll go pick them up, you know? Like, phone call for PETA coming. There it comes. It's just funny to watch, because he's like, ah, wow, cause I'm feeling the same thing. I'm not wearing shoes. Anyways. But you deal with it. They're paws are way more resilient than our bottom, our feet are.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Our feet are supposed to be resilient. Supposed to be, but we don't, we're not like dogs, or we walk around with no shoes on all the time. Now we baby the hell out of our feet. You ever seen pictures of hunter gatherer feet? It doesn't look like ours. Their foot's like wide, the toes are spread out,
Starting point is 00:06:29 and on the bottom of their foot, it looks like they have a soul made out of, you know, foot skin. Dude, speaking of blazing heat, have you guys ever left like, okay, you've left the protein shaker in the car before you blazing heat? The worst dude. I just, I left think God, like I left my cold brew in the car
Starting point is 00:06:46 and I was like, oh my God, it's gonna be like fucking hot as hell. And it was in one of those mirror, one of the canisters and it was like perfectly cold and chilled still. What is the weird science that they're using for that? Cause I've done that too. It's all day. It literally, a whole day. I just, I couldn't believe it.
Starting point is 00:07:05 And dude, it's just speaks to the quality of the product. I mean, I don't really know like the insulation that the technology I used for that, but it's on point. Was it while you were here with us? Yeah. Oh, wow. Yeah, the protein cup one.
Starting point is 00:07:18 That, because you open that, that's like opening up a demon smell. Oh, I have the worst thing. Okay, no, wait, I have a, I'm not gonna share it with you guys now, because on Friday, we shoot our Friday fitness tips, right? So each of us come with four or five. One of mine is how to avoid that.
Starting point is 00:07:32 How to avoid the protein cup stink afterwards? I have a gold tip. What do you do? I'm not gonna tell you, you have to wait. You have to wait for my Friday fitness tip. I'm gonna try it out now. I'm gonna put a protein shake in there and then see if we can leave it in the heat and
Starting point is 00:07:46 also you open it. It doesn't. So it's great. I mean, I don't understand the technology that allows it to do this. But it can, whether it's hot or cold, it'll keep whatever it is that temperature. That's what's fascinating to me. It's like, you know, you'll keep it super hot. So if you have something that's warm and you want us to keep warm, it's a, there's two
Starting point is 00:08:03 walls in between. There's air in between. That's all so they create a space and that doesn't transfer. I'm in the magic. No, I think there's an air conditioner in there. Yeah. There's little guys just fanning it. Yes, that's why that's why picture.
Starting point is 00:08:17 Fucking mere amazing. Amazing. They're magical. I shout out to you guys. I cleared out a gym one time with the protein checker cup that I left in the car. Oh, literally. It's the worst.
Starting point is 00:08:29 This is when I was managing. I can't wait to share my tip. It competes with the protein fart that clears the room. It's worse. This is when I managed the 24 on Santa Teresa. I went outside to my car to get my gym bag. It was gonna work out. And I leave my gym bag open sometimes. So when I my gym bag, was gonna work out. And, you know, I leave my gym bag open sometimes,
Starting point is 00:08:46 so when I turn or whatever, something will come out. So I noticed in the corner of my trunk, oh, there's my shaker cup, I've been looking for that and I brought it inside, opened it as I was walking into the gym, and it was the worst thing ever. My whole front desk area left, and we had to open the front door.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I took my tip, my tip is going to guarantee that never happens to people again. It's that good so much anticipation What do you sprinkle some? I'm not gonna tell you know, it's like the most it's so easy you put a clone No, nope, yeah, right now are you are you there right now are you guys the type that that tries to salvage that or do you talk? I throw it in the trash. Dude, bro. I feel like Sal would try and salvage you. No, I wouldn't.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Yeah, you mean it's in his name. It's out. No, I wouldn't. I throw it away, dude. Disgusting. Yeah, salvage yourself. Speaking of 24-hour fitness. Oh boy.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Shit dude. Dude, you would think that somebody called this. It's a weird death. We shouldn't laugh at this. This is not actually this is not funny. No, this is terrible. somebody called this. It's, it's a weird death. We shouldn't laugh at this. This is not actually, this is not funny. No, this is terrible. No, this is not funny.
Starting point is 00:09:50 It's incredibly distaste. Disappointing. Oh, they, they fired people. Let them go. How are you going to say that? You might have to do that. That's not necessarily the distaste. Oh, that wasn't, that was inevitable.
Starting point is 00:10:02 Although I will say this, right? So you have obviously two total different ways of leadership here. You have Mastroff and UFC. What was their email? They sent out an email. Their direction is, it is what it is. We're going to be limited to how many people we can let in. So instead of getting rid of our team and our staff, we're going to try and move this ship
Starting point is 00:10:22 in the direction of a more boutique-like gym. Rates are just going gonna have the prices. Yeah, raise the prices and try and provide more services, keep everybody. Then 24-hour fitness, no word of raising any prices, but we're just gonna cut heads. They let go of people, so I got so many DMs. And this is the part that to me is just terrible. Yeah, so many GMs, FM's, trainers, group X instructors, DM's, like all levels, like they just, they chopped heads
Starting point is 00:10:49 and the way they did it was on a recording. So you got, so you woke up one day. So, oh, disrespect. Oh, imagine, and I had DM's when we were able to, 18 years, seven years, 10 years in the company. Oh my God. They get a message that's a recorded message of letting you go, and that just tells you
Starting point is 00:11:09 how many people had I go. Right? Because if it was just a hand, and that, by the way, 24 is not reporting how many. They're not sharing that, so. I don't care how many, man. You get on the phone and you tell them yourself. You pussy.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Must've been a lot though, right? Oh, I'm sure I'm sure it was, but still. You don't make a recording for though, right? Oh, I know I was, but still, you don't make a recording for this business. This is how you do business. You know, you have to have that personal touch. Otherwise, you know, what are you even doing? They also ignored people when they kept getting charged and, you know, membership dues when they first cut, you know, close, they're going to kill their brand completely. So I shared that article. Then this yesterday or this morning, one of the last night of this morning, I shared that article and now already I'm getting DMs from people
Starting point is 00:11:53 that are saying, well, I don't know if that's worse or what happened to me at golds. So, golds filing for bankruptcy and closing down tons of gyms and some of the people that worked at these gyms, the way they found out they no longer had a job was they got the same generic email that everybody who was a member of that gym got, which is this gym is closing down no longer there. So that was how they found out they no longer had a job. What's worse, an email or a voice or a recorded message?
Starting point is 00:12:19 Both are pretty impressive. Yeah, pretty, pretty good. Hello, this is from someone so we are informing you, you is from someone. So we are informing you, you no longer. So we see, you do not have to come into. So we see what's happening to Crossfit. We see what's happening to UFC crunch type boxes. We see now what's happening to 24. We have a close friend, Scott, who we talked to and really are based on the private gym, what's going on with them. The last one that we haven't seen yet, haven't seen orange, Stereo and F-45.
Starting point is 00:12:47 I don't see how they're, I don't, they're, they're, they're, They were the ones that that would be hurt the most. Their butt business model is even harder to maintain with the current regulations and stuff. Well, was it this Friday that was supposed to be the grand opening of all gyms,
Starting point is 00:13:02 like, you know, here, it's been around California? Yeah, so I thought, I thought I read that. all gyms, like, you know, here. Is that right? Is that right? Yeah, that's what I thought I read that. Yeah, that was like, well, your Santa Cruz gym opened up just you know, we're just great. I hope they do well. I think these smaller boxes, these private gyms are going to do better
Starting point is 00:13:17 because I've gotten messages from people are like, yeah, my gym is open. It's not one of these big box, big brand gyms. And, but it's open and nobody cares. They're not following anything. They're just coming in and working out. I think that's easier to do with a smaller company. I really do think that the way that the gym industry's gonna look for a little while is you either pay a lot of money
Starting point is 00:13:37 or you're gonna work out at home. I don't see the $20 a month model surviving. Not for long. No, no, no, that's all old news. There's no way you can pull it off you. I don't know, dude, but planet fitness haven't heard anything from them. Yes, I'm interested in.
Starting point is 00:13:50 I mean, there are the example of the biggest box for the cheapest price, right? Nobody beats that. Nobody beats $10 a month and has the square footage that they have. I wonder if they're just charging people in the same, those people don't know because they didn't know before. Try to say the same, but pizza rates went up.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Yeah. $100 a slice. I'm like, oh man, you're driving a hard bargain here. I'm totally gonna buy it anyway. Well, if you don't, you just get tax later on this. That's what you're doing. Like $75, whatever. You just buy dollars, whatever.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Oh yeah, three slices. No, no, three pizzas, each pepperoni, $15 though. Here's some more good news apparently Okay Starbucks shutting down 400 locations. Whoa, you guys see this Starbucks. Yeah Starbucks is shutting out Justin's about to start Crying. No, yeah, not my Starbucks. Yeah, dude. They are shutting down 400 locations And now how many total were they up to they're in the thousands? I know that I don't know they're shutting down 400 locations. And now how many total were they up to? They're in the thousands, I know that. Yeah, I don't know. They're up there. Yeah, they're like every street corner.
Starting point is 00:14:47 So it says here in the article to close 400 stores while expanding its pickup store concept and access to curbside pickup. So we're gonna see more of these. So you're just kind of shifting and rearranging. Yeah, yeah. Should've bought stock and Dutch brothers. That would've been a good call right on the stock.
Starting point is 00:15:07 That's the coffee place that they do the drive-through thing. They're like the most popular drive-throughs. It's their publicly traded duck. Could you look that up for us? See if Dutch brothers is a publicly traded one. Why you're adding in Google Dutch oven? Why not? Don't go to that.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Or add sound to the screen. And then just click images, right? Hey, I listen to your interview the other day, Doug. Pretty good job. All right. Well, thank you. Yeah, I thought it was really good. It was very interesting.
Starting point is 00:15:32 You're on the next list. We'll probably have more interesting than listening to Justin and Sal. Yeah, yeah. Actually, you probably learned more about me that way than you do talking to me. Yeah, no, I did. I thought it was really good, actually.
Starting point is 00:15:40 You told, I think you told the origin story better than any of us tell it. I think for now on, when we get interviewed, we'll just refer to Doug, please. He tells the story better. He does. Yeah, he cleared up some things that I think I tell wrong in my story all the time.
Starting point is 00:15:54 What do you say wrong? Well, I always still picture Doug in the first conversation. No, it wasn't there. The first conversation, yeah. No, no. I'm happy you picture me there, but you were in my heart. Yes, thank you. Yeah, so.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Yeah, no, I went home and I called Doug after that meeting. Yes, so it was just the three of us? No, it was us three and Craig. Oh, Craig was at that one. Yes, he was. He was? Correct. Yeah, your house.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I don't feel like he was. Yes, he was. He was. It was me, you Justin and Craig, and then Katrina was in the background. I don't remember Craig being there. Yeah, maybe, maybe I'll, Doug was so buff, I got the two of them.
Starting point is 00:16:31 I'm gonna shut that. Exactly. You kinda confuse the two of them. You see, those videos I'm posting of Doug from our workout six, seven years ago. We're just flying in the forum. Yeah. It's looking shredded.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Yeah, so many. Did you see those? I didn't see those. I was going, wow, I look kinda good there. You still look shredded. Yeah, so did you see those I didn't see those I was coming Wow I look kind of good there. Yeah, you still look good. I yeah, I just need to drop a couple percentage of body fat It's it's heavy time right now. I mean I've announced it is heavy time. So I made a comment on your video. Oh, dude You ate the whole bag of chips Sal's bulk it over there as long as I'm the least fat That sells bulk in over there. As long as I'm the least fat.
Starting point is 00:17:04 I'm okay. The problem is you guys keep raising the butter. Hey man, so I can't have you beaten that roll. Yeah, for me. What's up, Doug? A couple things. So Dutch Brothers Coffee is privately held. Okay, no good.
Starting point is 00:17:17 And then Starbucks in the United States has 15,149 locations. Wow. 15,000 locations. Did you guys get the DM? I forget, I wanna say it was Marlon who sent it to Wow. 15,000 locations. Did you guys get the DM? I forget, I wanna say it was Marlon who sent it to me. I can't remember. I think it was Marlon.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Sent me, it showed this, of all fast food chains, Starbucks, subway was included in this Burger King, Pizza Hut, and it was like a graph of like from inception and then like which ones had the most locations? What do you guys think it is? Of all fast food, but it's all fast food. Yeah, subway is a way up there. Yeah, I did not.
Starting point is 00:17:53 I knew that because I saw it. Yeah, okay, so you did see the same thing. I did not know that. That was a surprise to me. Subway has the most locations. Yeah, they have the worst sandwiches. It's the worst. It's a bread sandwich.
Starting point is 00:18:02 You know what I mean? It comes out of a tube. It's gross. It's like it's just bread. There's never anything else in there. It's the worst. It's a bread sandwich. It comes out of a tube. It's gross. It's like it's just bread. It's just bread. There's never anything else in there. It's gross. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Speaking of pizza, did you know that they actually had delivered up to the space station, like the one of the only companies that have delivered food up to the space station? What? Yes. No way. Yes. No they did it. Yes, and it cost like millions something dollars. It was like ridiculous. What?
Starting point is 00:18:28 Where did you read Google it? Yes. No, I read that you read such better It's like such like like like snap-o-cap like useless fucking facts But that was one of them I was like what dude? Did you guys ever see the ordered pizza and they they rock it it up Did you ever see the the rare or the one-off one one of a kind, pizza hut sneakers. No. Oh, wait. Yeah, I do, remember that. I think you showed us. Yeah, you would like push a button on your, oh my god, look at that.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Yep. Oh, in 2001, pizza hut became the first restaurant chain to deliver to space. Yeah. Wow. What happened? How long did it take, though? Pizza guy.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Did it get? Was it warm? I'm sure it tasted great. I doubt it. How do they poop in space? I just made me think about that right now because pizza means your food. Is that what they do? It's probably like a vacuum toilet.
Starting point is 00:19:13 It sucks the- It probably compresses it. I was thinking I'd watch out, it doesn't slip out. That's just floating around. Disgusting. Dude, I got- Somebody did a post on Instagram that hella people are tagging me on
Starting point is 00:19:24 because it sounds smart, but it's actually not. It's this trainer who's talking about how spot reduction is actually real or whatever. And he goes, if spot reduction isn't real, then why are the forearms, I'll read it to you. What if I make a statement saying spot reduction is possible? Ever wondered why your forearms are the leanest body part? So, I guess this theory is because we use our hands a lot,
Starting point is 00:19:49 that our forearms always stay lean. That's so dumb. Who would have thought you would do that first? Was not round. Yeah. So, here's why your forearms, here's why you don't see humans who store a ton of fat in the arms and legs. We store body fat in evolutionarily,
Starting point is 00:20:06 advantageous ways. So could you imagine being a hunter and you gain body fat and just your arms and legs out fat and try to chase down some. Yeah. It's also why men... Well, there's not a lot to protect and insulate there either. Well, yes, also.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Yeah, you don't got no organs going on there. But it also makes you less mobile. So you'll notice like men store more body fat in their midsection. And that's because it keeps our limbs free to maintain our ability to hunt. Why do women store more body fat in their lower body? Because it keeps their center of gravity
Starting point is 00:20:36 for when they are pregnant. Because if they store body fat and they got pregnant in their belly, that would be, they would make them very, you know, top over, top over, right? So this is why your forms are lean. Otherwise, otherwise all you teenage boys out there would have are shredded right for, I don't know why this reminds me of it, but here's two fun facts about Jeffrey Dahmer. Wow. Yeah. Keep them rolling. So no, okay, did you know that he actually fed his neighbors sandwiches and
Starting point is 00:21:06 They're speculating that he definitely put like human No, sandwiches. Why where did you hear this? Yeah, no, I heard it and and I think my skin yeah, the Couple of the neighbors were just like oh my god. I'm pretty sure it like I ate human A couple of the neighbors were just like, oh my God, I'm pretty sure it like I ate human The worst part was like a year before that they were brigham man. I miss Jeff Everyone he's making these great grilled cheese with like a bologna That was somebody's ass You know another fun fact about so he was repulsed by
Starting point is 00:21:42 People that had tattoos, so he said it tasted difference somehow. Really? Yes. And I'm like, I'm gonna get all tatted up. I'm tatted up. I imagine. So the sandwich thing is disgusting. I know.
Starting point is 00:21:55 Hey Jeff, can you make that, that Po Boy sandwich? Yeah. Little foot long there. Oh, that's a foot? No. Double me please. Made with real boy. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Geez. Oh, that's a foot. No double me, please made with real boy
Starting point is 00:22:10 Hey, Apple dude 1.5 trillion what about that? Remember that it was like it was just not even a race to the cash it was a race to a trillion That was a big deal just to hit a trillion. They're already at 1.5 now. You mean valuation or how much cash they got how much money They got bro. Oh, they were the first to become their first day Had a trillion and they just were they just roll past 1.5. How many people are their own country? Hold on a second. How many people on the earth are there seven billion right seven billion people so If you took 1.5 trillion dollars and divide it by seven billion people how much money would everybody get? I know I do I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good that was the rate what the race was. Yeah, the races so We've got one point five trillion of the bank to be insane. Well, how much? See what they're what their cash Value, what what's their cash value? I think how much they have the most I know that yeah, but a trillion cash What would you earn an interest in that hundreds of billions of dollars a year? Yeah last time you're
Starting point is 00:23:20 You're math is way the fuck off. No, it's not. Here, they had $207 billion in cash on hand. That's way less than what? $5 trillion. Well, that's a lot. Yeah, well, the race wasn't to how much cash they had. The big race was the first company to be worth a trillion dollar. Now, who's next? Amazon?
Starting point is 00:23:37 Yeah, they wanted to be. I think they beat them out. I think Amazon passes. See what Amazon does at Degrin. Amazon, they're trillion already too. Yeah. That's pretty crazy. So it was to get to a trillion.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Now they're already at 1.5. That's what's fascinating. It took a long time for someone to cross over the trillion mark and for them to be already at 1.5 is amazing. What's after a trillion, by the way? Is it in a Google? Quad. No, no, I thought, what's the number after a trillion?
Starting point is 00:24:04 Does anybody know? No, I don't know I haven't thought that a zillion Googleplex. No, I know what a Google is supposed to be one with 10 zeros, right? Is now what that is nobody knows. I just count to 12 and I train my clients So I don't get a trillion in February. Oh, so you okay? So they're they're right behind them. Wow Yeah, Doug can you find out what's after a trillion? I'm doing that. February. Oh, it's okay, so they're right behind them. Wow. Yeah, Doug, can you find out what's after a trillion? I am doing that, yes.
Starting point is 00:24:29 Yeah, so let's see. It comes quadrillion, quintillion, quadrillion, six trillion, septillion, octillion. Wow. Wow. So, quadrillion, it sounds like you made that shit up. Yeah. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:24:42 Yeah. It sounds like, just, just, just in guess that, I did, yeah. You didn't give him credit or anything. It's fine. Yeah, you're such a'm saying yeah sounds like just and just just and guess that didn't shit. Yeah, yeah, you didn't give him credit or anything You're fine. Yeah, you're such a con sucker sometimes Wow Sorry about that. I should on everybody else's back so then come with none yourself. Come on guy I read it out there. Is zillion is not a number Adam Anyway, dude, so this you know, I know that that nobody wants to talk about this anymore, but coronavirus is still around
Starting point is 00:25:09 So they're they're really connecting under pound gorilla. They're really connecting Low vitamin D levels to to corona to people getting infected with coronavirus I ironically told everyone to stay in their houses. I know dude But so the study came out that showed that people who were vitamin D deficient Before the pandemic began were 77% more likely wow to test positive For COVID-19 compared to people in that normal in that article Did they also mention how many cases of like pure COVID death like like what that they were deficient in in vitamin D? Because I think I read
Starting point is 00:25:46 somewhere where the most cases they found were like accelerated the symptoms, like they were low in vitamin D. Well, I don't, I don't think that's that surprising in my stat. What's the stat on the, how many people are deficient in vitamin D anyway? It's like 80% of the population anyway. So to say 80% of the population is vitamin D deficient and then you're 70% more likely to get the coronavirus if you have a That's not much of a connection you're making no no no no they actually did they actually did control for a lot of factors So they found people who were not deficient and people who were deficient and then they found and it's not 80%
Starting point is 00:26:17 There is a large amount. I think it is it's high, dude. Yeah, there's a lot But it's not 80% but it is high. It is very high. This is a fact day today. Today is fact checking each other day. What is the stat? How many Americans are deficient in vitamin D? Yes. But here's what's important though, you also have to communicate. If you're not deficient in vitamin D,
Starting point is 00:26:38 supplementing with vitamin D is not a good idea. It's a fat, soluble vitamin. And having too much of it's not good for you either. Too much vitamin D causes calcium to build up in your blood and your system can cause heart issues. 42%. Yeah, so it's half of 80. That's still a lot.
Starting point is 00:26:55 It is a lot though. Yeah, it's still a lot. Yeah, it is a lot. So now, here's what I recommend. I recommend if you're, if you wanna make sure that your, because vitamin D's very important for immune function obviously. Make sure that your vitamin D levels are either good, or low, or high before you decide to supplement. You can get a test from your doctor, you can ask for vitamin D, uh, D test from your doctor, which can be a pain in the ass, or you could just do
Starting point is 00:27:22 it at home. Um, the company we work with is heavily well. So I've done the test now three separate times, and luckily for me, each time I'm right in the world. This is one. This is the next one I'm really focused on. You only do one one. Yeah, I did one before. This was like months and months ago,
Starting point is 00:27:39 but like, and I was deficient back then, and I've been actively trying to up that, especially after all that information came out and trying to make sure that I'm doing my part to be resilient towards these diseases out there. So this is why I love this company too. I went to, so I have a full blood planal schedule right now. Four weeks, dude.
Starting point is 00:27:59 What do you mean? Four weeks to get me in. Really? Yes, ridiculous, dude. And not only that, because we got the new insurance that my doctor wants to do a full exam on me first before he even schedules the blood test.
Starting point is 00:28:10 And then it's four weeks from it to even get in and see like, Ridiculous. Now, did you tell them about all the STDs and stuff that you have? No, yeah, I'm gonna surprise them. You're gonna be even more weak. He's gonna fight down.
Starting point is 00:28:19 Yeah, yeah, it's always a great life. But the test came back. The first time, O'Hinnor, it looks like you're wartime. And I have herpes. Yeah. Then I act out a shock. What? You kidding me?
Starting point is 00:28:27 So the vitamin T, D test. That's it. More pen and so on. Last time it was six. They're going to give you COVID to cure you. The, the, the, use a dash of crap. The vitamin D test that you order from Evoliwell, the retail price is only 79 bucks.
Starting point is 00:28:42 So 79 bucks, you get a test at home. And then I know with MindPump, we have a discount. So using our code, so that's very inexpensive for an at home test. And you get the results pretty quick. So are you supplementing now that with vitamin D Justin, is that what you're doing? I am, yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:57 How many I use are you taking every day? Tell me like a good range. Five thousand, because I don't even remember. Yeah, they're normally 20 carry manages. They're normally 2500 IU, 5000 IU, 5,000 IU, or the standard pills, unless you do like a thousand that's mixed with something else.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Yeah, I take about five to 10. You take 10. Because yours were really low. Yeah, I was thinking I was thinking 5,000 IU's and I actually tested with the everyday well test and still came up low. So then I take 10. And I so I won't though if I have like a great day like or like the last three days I haven't taken that high I haven't
Starting point is 00:29:31 taken that high of a dose because I've been getting tons of sun. You're you are darker. Thank you. Really dark. Yeah, I'm trying. Yeah. Mm-hmm. That's good. So I got a cool article for you guys. Identical twins. I had a joke but I won't. Oh my guys. Identical twins, I had a joke but I won't. Let's keep going. Identical twins compared a vegan diet with an omnivore diet. So both of them followed diets that were different in their identical twins. You guys want to hear the results? Yes. So the vegan diet resulted in more fat loss, probably because it was lower calorie, obviously. But also lost some muscle mass. The omnivore diet guy didn't lose as much body fat, but maintained or gained a little bit of muscle. I don't know what one of the main side effects of the vegan diet,
Starting point is 00:30:17 twin, loss of libido. He says his sex drive went way down after eating. That's not what game change you've told me. Yeah, right. And I said you get more boners from it. That's not true. Massive boners. Yeah, he says that his sex drive went down. Now here's the thing with stuff like this that I don't like.
Starting point is 00:30:35 They didn't really control macros. I would have loved to have seen the diets being compared but being the exactly same calories, exactly the same macros, but they didn't do that. They just tried healthy and one guy ate meat and the other guy just ate vegan. But the sex drive loss, that's interesting. That could also though come from a low calorie.
Starting point is 00:30:54 I don't know, Adam, when you would diet for a show, how was your libido? Oh, terrible when you get to, especially towards the end. Yeah. When you start getting a really low calorie, so it doesn't matter, right? So even if I was eating a balanced diet, just I think low, low calorie,
Starting point is 00:31:09 especially for an extended period of time, does that to anyone's libido? So I'm sure that had something to do with just the fact that it was low calorie, right? So anyway, actually the guy who ate meat get put on 10 pounds of muscle. And the other guy didn't. So that's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:31:22 Yeah, that's interesting. I think I had to do more of the calories, but... Did you see the, so intact, I think all three of us this morning, it's some guy, some guy from Norway who was like a, you know, in social fitness influencer guy who's got like, I don't know, a couple hundred thousand followers. And he's gained most of his following because he's a, you know, buff fitness guy that's a vegan. And he just came out and announced that he's no longer going to be vegan anymore.
Starting point is 00:31:46 I saw that. Oh my goodness. They just were so angry. Yeah, they make you're a big vegan. It was for his health. Yeah. He started eating meat again because there was certain nutrient deficiencies. Yeah, there was a big beta analysis that showed higher instances of mental illness, anxiety, disorders with people
Starting point is 00:32:07 when they stop eating meat. And this has to do with the potential nutrient deficiency, but here's the thing, it's were modern times, you can supplement with a lot of that stuff. You know what I'm saying? So if you're gonna go vegan and you're afraid, you're afraid of that stuff.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Well, I mean, you supplement anyway, you're taking vitamin D, so am I. One thing. Yeah, well, no, I take more than that. Yeah, I mean, you supplement anyway, you know, you're taking vitamin D. So am I? One thing. Yeah. Well, no, I take more nap. Yeah, you do. You guys know that. The guy over here with his purse. Yeah. He's gonna purse full of supplements. It's fun. You never know what you're gonna go. Yeah. In Lulu bag. Yeah. Justin, you had a joke you want to say? What? No, I don't. Oh, you didn't. I don't. I already wanted to move on. I'm sorry. what's ass squatchers by the way? Oh, ass squatchers, I'm glad you asked, Cell.
Starting point is 00:32:48 Um, dude, this is like my favorite thing on the internet right now. I had no idea. Like, so there's people out there now, like taxidermists that are taking deer butts and they're turning them into like, Sasquatch looking faces. People are putting up on their walls. I'm totally gonna put this in my story, taking deer butts and they're turning them into like Sasquatch looking faces.
Starting point is 00:33:05 People are putting up on their walls. I'm totally gonna put this in my story just so you know. Yeah, they look like, they put little faces on or like angry, they look like Harry and the Henderson, like faces but they put on a deer's ass. So it's just a butt. It's a butt that they hang on a wall. It looks like, you know, this, this,
Starting point is 00:33:25 You actually feel smarter after reading all these articles. I'm not. It's a kill brain. This is way better than all this other bullshit everybody's like posting. That's fair. That is fair. I'm with you. Oh my god.
Starting point is 00:33:36 What in the, oh my god. Look at that. Look at that. That looks so good. I just, just do yourself a favor and Google it. Okay. So it's, why I'm interested. It's ass squatches. Asquatches. Ass squatches. I want one a favor and Google it. Okay. So it's why I'm interested. It's ass squatches.
Starting point is 00:33:47 Asquatches. Ass squatches. I want one of those in my house. I think it's, you know, it's cute. I would be $265. Yeah. Wow. I'd be afraid to Google that if I was listening right now.
Starting point is 00:33:59 Ass squatches. Yeah. You could pull some other creatures. Yeah, there would be some. Yeah. Yeah. Bill and Ted,, there would be. Yeah. Yeah. Bill and Ted, is that coming out? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:08 I brought this up like maybe three times now. I think they've been like trying to figure out when they're going to launch it and then this happened and all. And so they just put out a trailer recently. I don't know. You guys haven't seen it yet? No. Okay.
Starting point is 00:34:22 It's a real thing. So it's coming out. I mean, they're still trying to create the ultimate song that's gonna bring everybody together. Good luck. Yeah. But yeah, so that's, I guess the premise of it, but it's funny because they're basically going into
Starting point is 00:34:36 the future and all this finding themselves and trying to steal them, the perfect song that they've created in the future from themselves. And they're like, they're in prison for one of them or like these buff suits and stuff. Anyways, it looks ridiculous and right up my alley. Dude, when's the last time you guys watch the original Bill and Ted?
Starting point is 00:34:56 I'm gonna watch it this weekend when my kid's actually. You probably can't. It's about as, it's about as, it's about as, politically incorrect as you can get. But that's why I like it. Yeah, is it really? Oh, dude. I don politically incorrect as you can get. That's why I like it. Is it really? Oh, dude. I don't remember, bro.
Starting point is 00:35:07 When they hug, they say I like it. Oh, bro. All movies from that era were just, they just would not fly to that. Yeah, back when we had great television. It was fun times. Now the pop patrol, does it even fly? Oh my gosh. Too controversial.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Did you guys hear about that? Yes. People were calling for the removal of Paw Patrol because it has a police dog, you know, cartoon. This is getting ridiculous, dude. It's such a positive cartoon. It's a cartoon, dude. Paw Patrol.
Starting point is 00:35:36 Paw Patrol. I remember that like, it was yesterday. Yeah, there's some weird, there's, there's way worse stuff in media. Why are we getting rid of that kind of stuff? I don't know, dude. It's just, it's just getting silly. What was the of that kind of stuff? I don't know, dude. It's just getting silly. What was the other thing I saw that was,
Starting point is 00:35:46 you seem ridiculous. You didn't Portland like box off an area like this. Oh, see, I don't. Yeah, right? Oh, that's crazy. That's real. Now, I don't know how to interpret it. I don't know if they're actually,
Starting point is 00:35:56 I know I've read the articles and apparently they've sh- they've barricaded it and they've declared it a police-free zone. Now, how do you do that? How do we declare this is police-free zone. Now, how do you do that? How do we declare this is police-free? Well, so what happened was the protesters gathered in mass, and there were some violent confrontations,
Starting point is 00:36:12 and the cops were told to stand down to prevent any further violence, so they left. So then they got barricades, put them out and said, this is ours now. And I mean, people live there. Businesses are there. There's some anecdotal reports of people needing to show these, whoever these people are,
Starting point is 00:36:29 their IDs, they get to their own houses. I don't know, man, it's kind of crazy. I got something that I learned today that I didn't know was true. So you know if you were one of the shops that just decided to board up your windows by yourself that you could void your insurance. How?
Starting point is 00:36:43 Because it's supposedly you can't, you have to frame it out and like there's companies that were actually doing that that you'd void your insurance. How? Because it's supposedly you can't, you have to frame it out and like there's companies that were actually doing that that you'd pay like, I think it was like expensive, thousands of dollars to come to you, you couldn't just throw plywood up on your sword. I mean, you could, but if you did that,
Starting point is 00:36:55 you potentially void the insurance. Like if you had flood or something else like that because you were nailing into the wall, the windows, the frame of the windows and so that, it could void your insurance. Really? That's what I heard. Wow.
Starting point is 00:37:08 And that weird. Wow. Wow. You know, it's cheaper than $10,000? A rifle that you can stand in front of your business with. Yeah. Yeah. You can keep walking.
Starting point is 00:37:17 Yeah. Crazy times, weird stuff. But yeah, so anyway, we'll see what happens in Seattle. I don't know what that thing's all about. On who knows. I have trouble activating my chest, even with common chest activation exercises.
Starting point is 00:38:02 After benching with barbells and dumbbells, I always seem to feel my triceps the most. What do you recommend? Mass prime. There you go. One of the under song or not well represented benefits of priming, besides moving better and getting better ranges of motion and better connection and being stronger, is that you can feel and thus work weak body parts better.
Starting point is 00:38:29 So I'm gonna give you a generic way to prime your chest before you chest press so that you start to feel your chest more. A basic fly will do this. So you do a basic fly, really squeeze the chest, isolate it, do a few sets, then go bench press, and now try to continue to feel the chest through the movement, and you'll start to feel
Starting point is 00:38:47 the chest actually work, you know? I'll take that one step further. I would actually row first, to prime your back, to get you, because normally if someone's feeling their triceps and or shoulders and not their chest, they're rolled forward, right? So your shoulders are rolled forward, and the triceps and the shoulders
Starting point is 00:39:04 are taking over the movement, and you're not not feeling any chest and that's partly because you're not keeping yourself in a retracted position so the chest can activate and do most of the movement. So I would prime the back first by doing a set of seated row, even some barbell rows, real light, just two sets of it, 15, 20 reps, get a little bit of pump in your back and then go do some flies, like Salah saying, and then go into a bench press, you should definitely flip it. I mean, this is, again, this is why we create a prime.
Starting point is 00:39:34 I mean, prime is designed for two address things, because this is common. It's not uncommon. In fact, it's more common than people don't say anything about it, but they have this issue. So it's seen all the time with clients. Yeah, the whole, it's interesting, right?
Starting point is 00:39:45 Cause the compound movements are the best muscle builders, but they're also the ones that could potentially lead to disconnection from target body parts, right? So, like a barbell squat, great exercise for the butt, the quads, the hamstrings, it's just the phenomenal. It's one of the best, like for example, it's one of the best butt building exercises you could do. But if you have trouble connecting to your butt,
Starting point is 00:40:08 it becomes a terrible butt developing exercise. This is where the isolation movements really come into play and you can use them at the beginning of the workout. And here's what happens. Now I know there's a lot of fitness academics out there that like to debate this and say, you're not activating more muscles and blah, blah, blah. Okay, the point is to get the person to feel what it feels like
Starting point is 00:40:30 to activate that muscle. That's what priming really does. As it gets you to understand what that feels like, then you go into your compound movement and then what you end up doing is as you do the compound movement, you focus on still continuing to feel that target muscle. It may mean you need to go lighter, by the way.
Starting point is 00:40:48 You may have to go into your bench press or your dumbbell press, drop the load by a significant amount, not a little bit, by 30% maybe, slow down, and then press in a way that you feel more in your chest, if that makes sense. So one thing you could do, like let's say you're grabbing the barbell and you're doing your bench press, elbows are gonna flare out a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:41:12 Of course shoulders pin down and back. And then focus, rather than pushing the bar up, focus on the elbows coming together, because that's what the chest is doing. It's bringing the elbows together. Well, I think too, sometimes it might be a issue, like, especially with squats, like you notice, like a lot of people don't feel real activation their glutes to even like pursue more depth and they're able to
Starting point is 00:41:34 Allowing themselves. So same with the bench. Like I've seen guys bench where they they don't even go Necessarily they go about halfway down and they're just just focused completely on the lockout which drives all tricep activities. So that's a part of the lift. If you can gain a little bit more depth and be able to dig your way out, you'll get more chest activity. Next question is from Rolando Chavez 2. What exercises do you recommend for an overall improvement of strength endurance, which maps program do you think works best to increase strength endurance?
Starting point is 00:42:09 So, the second... Well, okay, so you can build strength endurance with any exercise along with its program to be a strength endurance type exercise. I'll answer the second part first, and we'll go back to what I was just talking about. A lot of our programs work on and develop this. More of some arithletic based programs. Math performance is a good example. The program that's on sale this month is also great for strength endurance.
Starting point is 00:42:34 Math is it. Yeah. High intensity interval training done with weights actually works a lot on strength endurance. Because you're lifting weights and because of the way that we wrote the program, you are building endurance but you're lifting weights and because of the way that we wrote the program You are building endurance, but you're also building strength and we did that on purpose right we wanted you to To burn as many calories as possible and short intense workout, but we also wanted to prevent Muscle loss so there's a very strong
Starting point is 00:43:03 Strength component in there now as far strength in endurance is concerned higher reps Lower rest periods works on this now how low are the rest periods? You can bring them as far down as no rest period and go from one exercise to another, in which case you're going to do more endurance. You can have a little bit longer rest periods, like 20 or 30 seconds in between sets, in which case you're going to get a little bit more strength than endurance. So you want to look at, imagine like you see a scale, if endurance goes up with your programming,
Starting point is 00:43:30 then strength tends to go down and vice versa. They tend to not, you can't go hardcore strength with your program and hardcore endurance at the same time, because your body will give you a little bit of each. So it's the higher reps, it's the shorter rest periods, and you can do that with almost any exercise. As you become advanced, the compound movements tend to be some of the best ones.
Starting point is 00:43:50 I'll tell you what, you try doing 20 rep sets of squats. You don't even have to do any other exercises. Just try doing 20 reps of squats with deep breathing in between and tell me you're not working. You have tons of endurance. Yeah, I'm telling you. Yeah, real quick. Oh, yeah. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:44:08 Yeah. Next question is from Linseman. Am I too old to get into powerlifting? Nope. Next question. Yeah. You know, training for maximal strength, there's a higher, anytime you're training for maximum performance in any category, there is a higher risk of injury.
Starting point is 00:44:25 But if you do it right, powerlifting can be appropriate for anybody, regardless of age. It depends on the individual. I do want to know how old this individual is, just out of curiosity. Because I've taught somebody that was like 60 years old, how to basically do those types of compound lifts that are in our powerlifting program, but not necessarily like maxing out or like it's just really learning the technique of it first. And I think
Starting point is 00:44:51 that's beneficial for any age. It's just all a matter of application. Well, look how old Doug is. Doug does powerlifting moves, you know, so all the time. So there's an example right there of someone older than dirt that actually has. Oh my gosh. So, yeah, no, he's doing good in games. I think, too, when we hear power lifting, I think people just assume that it has to be like, you know, five competition, 500, 700 pounds, like you could be lifting 100 pounds and that could be power lifting for you, you know, so it doesn't necessarily mean, you do what is, is a heavy load for you and train some of the base, they're just the core lifts, right?
Starting point is 00:45:27 That you're focusing on improving. I think it has a tremendous amount of value. In fact, I wish I understood powerlifting principles at a younger age and would have gotten into it earlier because I think that had I done that early, it would have probably carried over into my, you know, my statics and building muscle later on that I cared more about.
Starting point is 00:45:45 The prerequisite's definitely apply. I mean, if you build your way up, it's at a higher tier in terms of what you're gonna try and set a goal to get to. This is how I would look at it if you're getting up there in age, but do you guys remember that little old lady that was the power lifter that had a home invasion and then through the guy down? Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:09 And then like, Pindam and the cops came like, like, shit like that, like I just love to see that and I love to see, you know, people that are still after it and really, you know, like challenging themselves physically and what that can still provide. Well, one of the best ways for you to preserve muscle is you get older and be training this way. Absolutely. So I trained a lot of people in advanced age. And when it was appropriate, I trained them. I would go through phases of heavy strength training,
Starting point is 00:46:35 three reps, four reps. I would even do singles when it was appropriate. Here's a thing, training a particular way, there are prerequisites that determine whether or not it's appropriate. Age only is a factor because it could potentially contribute to the other prerequisites. So what do I mean by that? Well, you need to have a certain amount of mobility and stability before I'm going to train
Starting point is 00:46:57 you with heavy loads. Can age influence that? It can, but age by itself doesn't matter. I can train somebody, and I have, train somebody who's in their 70s who has excellent stability and mobility Who I would train heavy all the time my old client Jim who actually helped dug and I film the first maps and a ballack program We used to do singles and doubles and triples all the time. He was in his 70s Extremely fit extremely strong a tremendous amount of muscle on his body and he was what you would consider an ectomore.
Starting point is 00:47:29 I mean, the guy got his testosterone levels checked and he was always in the 6 to 700 range and it was just appropriate. So power lifting is appropriate when it's appropriate. Well, it's also the other end of the spectrum is true too. Like, I've had clients that I've trained there 25 years old that have no business power lifting because they have incredibly terrible posture, they have no stability and they just don't have good mechanics. So they're not somebody who I would want to load, you know, a squat, a deadlift, an overhead
Starting point is 00:47:55 press or a chest press, really, really heavy until I addressed all those things. So you're right. Age doesn't really have anything to do with it. It really depends on where you're currently at in your fitness career. In the old adage, you use it or you lose it is very, very true. What does that mean? That means if you stop practicing something or you stop doing something, you lose the ability to do that. An extreme example, if you were to lay in bed for the next 10 or 15 years, your ability to walk and bed for the next 10 or 15 years, your ability to walk would probably be gone or it would be significantly hampered.
Starting point is 00:48:28 You would have a very tough time getting up and walking after laying in bed that long. If as you get older, if you lose the ability to exert strength through a maximal strength, you lose the ability to lift a heavy load for two or three reps. You'll lose it because you don't practice it. Could that be a skill that's valuable to somebody in that age group? Absolutely. You know, if you wanna remain independent
Starting point is 00:48:54 through old age, that means that, you know, you may need to move the couch on your own or the kitchen table or a chair or lift a heavy, heavy groceries. So this is a skill you don't wanna lose. You just gotta be careful and you gotta do it. or the kitchen table or a chair or lift heavy, heavy groceries. So this is a skill you don't want to lose. You just got to be careful and you got to do it the right way. But if it's done properly, here's a wonderful thing about resistance training.
Starting point is 00:49:14 If it's done properly and if it's appropriate, it's always a good idea. If those two things are met, then it's always a good idea, regardless of age. Next question is from that guy T. How would you advise someone with body dysmorphia and a long history of dieting to repair a broken relationship with food? Man, first off, I wanna say, if you're a trainer and we were all trainers,
Starting point is 00:49:38 we all have a lot of experience working with this kind of stuff, but I would always, if this was a bad situation, I would always recommend that they also work with an expert in this type of field, like eating disorder expert. So I've worked with clients who both worked with a counselor or a therapist, and then also trained with me. Now, the way that I would help them as a trainer, one of the most successful strategies
Starting point is 00:50:03 I ever found that helped people with body dysmorphia was to take their focus off of how their body looked and get them to focus on performance. And it's not a permanent solution because you could also go, you know, you could also get, you know, a little pathological, which is performance. But if you take someone that all they care about is how they look and they obsess about it, and I could shift their focus and get them to care more about how strong I am, my mobility, how much stamina and endurance I have, it gets their mind off of how they look all the time. And it's actually was quite successful.
Starting point is 00:50:41 I've had several clients that I've've done that with alongside working with a therapist and it was tremendous. I think that's a must. I think you have to have, I mean, even with all of our experience with clients like this, which I have too, I would want a nutritionist, a therapist, and then me, right? And then all I'm focused on is programming.
Starting point is 00:50:59 I'm focused on programming and keeping your mind focused on increasing weights, strength, strength, strength, strength, that's all we're talking about, Not about what your body looks like. I don't even want to dive into your calories up or down. I'd rather your nutritionist talk to you about feeding your body, getting it what it needs. And speaking to you about that, your therapist working through your body, just more of you, and then me focusing you on your strength training. I know that sounds crazy because I'm sure not everybody can afford all three of those. But the reality is that this is a multifaceted type of situation that I don't want to think
Starting point is 00:51:30 that I have the expertise to handle it all on my own, even if I have experience dealing with it. I think all of our experiences have led us to this person, the worst thing you could do is talk about aesthetics and looking a certain way or trying to change that or the scale. And honestly, even if you don't have dysmorphia, right, even if you're not somebody who's got this extreme case, this is a strategy that we use with almost everybody. Anyway, yeah, because even somebody who is not on this far into the spectrum that falls
Starting point is 00:52:00 somewhere just, you know, they're concerned about their way or they want to do this. Like, it's a good strategy for trainers to get away from the scale and get away from the way they look all the time. I think there's enough of that with social media and magazines and television telling us that we need to look a certain way that most people that come in, I tried and steer away from that way no matter what. It's a psychological relief. And I definitely was big on this in the initial bit.
Starting point is 00:52:27 It's really trying to focus in on how well your body's functioning, how well you feel, how well the joints move, what kind of strength gains we're getting week after week. And really the whole aesthetic side of it was something that I would address as it came up on checkpoints. But for the most part,
Starting point is 00:52:48 I just find it such a better strategy to get people to really get excited about, actually being able to move better, being able to be stronger, it's more empowering than to really just look at yourself and be in like, because it's so temporary, you're never gonna be like super happy
Starting point is 00:53:06 at that second. It's always when you're looking back at like how happy you were, how good you looked at that moment. Yeah, and I think it's also important to communicate that the standard way of doing business or working with clients can actually be quite negative for people with body dysmorphia. So what do I mean by that?
Starting point is 00:53:25 Well, typically what trainers do is we take circumference measurements. We look at the scale, we'll do body fat percentage tests, the verbiage that we use, shape and sculpt your body. You know, where would you like to build? Where would you like to lose? What part of your body do you want to focus on? That kind of talk is terrible. Talksick for somebody who has body dysmorphia issues.
Starting point is 00:53:50 I'm also going to say this statement, which I think is true. A lot of trainers suffer from mild forms of body dysmorphia. It's probably why you got into fitness in the first place. I know it was for me, so I'm speaking from personal experience. So the thing that you want to be more than what you want to do, it's really about what you want to avoid. I would not talk about what parts of your body you want to focus on in terms of looks.
Starting point is 00:54:12 I would not do body fat tests. I would not look at the scale or do circumference and use those metrics to gauge a client success. All I would focus on, all I would focus on, what's performance in the gym, how strong you are, how you feel, and I would also create a light environment. You know, like I said, I've worked with several clients where I would work with their therapist and this is something that I think if you're a trainer can make you extremely valuable.
Starting point is 00:54:40 Get the names and numbers of the other practitioners that your client is working with, and work with them. You could be very, very effective if you do that. And so a lot of times I talk to the therapist and I say, hey, here's what I'm doing. What do you think? And then usually the therapist would agree. Sometimes they'd say something like, hey, if you could keep the conversation kind of light
Starting point is 00:54:59 in the workout because stress tends to trigger so and so. And of course, this is all with the permission of the client. And then that's what I do. I would work them out. And of course, this is all with the permission of the client. And then that's what I do. I would work them out, and we wouldn't even talk about performance. We would just work out and have good conversation and just create an environment where the person
Starting point is 00:55:13 could connect to their body with no outside pressure or focus and really start to learn how to feel their body differently. Because I think when you have body dysmorphia, your connection to your body obviously is not healthy. It's not accurate. But exercise itself can be a very healthy way to connect to your body. You can feel your body moving.
Starting point is 00:55:37 You can feel muscles get sore. You can feel things stretching. And so if you don't layer it with a bunch of, here's what's happening with your body, here's what we're doing. And we're just in there and this kind of comfortable, like let's just do this together type of thing. They start to actually develop better associations and connections to their body.
Starting point is 00:55:55 One of the people that I worked with years ago, who I'm talking about, became a personal trainer. They had such a positive experience. We were able to solve this issue with themselves that they quit their job and went into fitness because it was that positively impactful. But again, remember, if you're a trainer, focus on what you know, stay in your lane
