Starting point is 00:00:02 I don't care how good a person you are. I don't care how spiritual or religious you are. I don't care how smart you are, how rich you think you are. Every human being is going to go through extreme stress multiple times in their life. Everyone gets called on the journey. Most people try to resist it. But that journey, that's what the call is. It's a call to grow.
Starting point is 00:00:22 So I'm big on change your story, change your life. And I'm big on understanding the narrative of where you are in the story of your life. Because if you understand where you are, It gives context. It gives meaning. I love human beings. I hate suffering and I hate, and I love to see when somebody awakens to who they are.
Starting point is 00:00:39 And we all are so much more than we ever perceive ourselves to be, but many times you don't discover that until you have to. I like to try and show people how to do it so I don't wait until life hits them. Anything you can imagine, we're all going to go through extreme stress in our lives, but how do you use stress or distress use you? I see it as a blessing. I see that I always try to help people say, how could you turn your worst day into your best day?
Starting point is 00:01:02 That's when life is really magical. But you don't experience life. Experience the life you focus on. If you don't control your focus, you react. Is this the end of the beginning? Is this person dissing me? Are they challenging me? Are they coaching me? Are they loving me?
Starting point is 00:01:25 And whatever meaning you give it produces emotion. And out of that emotion, you make the third decision, and what am I going to do? I hate suffering. I have suffered myself, and so I hate to see anybody suffer, and so I'm unbelievably driven to end suffering where I can to help anyone do that, whether it be hunger or emotional hunger,
Starting point is 00:01:43 or depression, or sadness, or a relationship, or when you get to the point where your old strategy doesn't work enough and you have enough pain, you will search for something new. Change is never a matter of ability. It's always a matter of strong enough reasons, of motive. If you got strong enough reasons you can do just about anything. But people got to find what that is for themselves
Starting point is 00:02:05 because if you succeed and you're not fulfilled, what do you got? So my passion is to help people be fulfilled, not just achieve. The first step to change is examining your thoughts, paying attention to how you speak and how you act, and look at these emotions that keep you connected to the past and finally decide, does this emotion belong in my future? And it's so much easier to make the same choice every single day.
Starting point is 00:02:37 And the hardest part about change is not making the same choice as you did the day before. And the moment you decide to make a different choice, you're going to feel uncomfortable because you're stepping from the known into the unknown. So some people would rather cling to their self-pity than take a chance and possibility. They'd rather tell the story of their past instead of telling the story of their future. They'd rather believe in their past instead of believe in their future.
Starting point is 00:03:11 We live in chronic disbelief. What if the truth was that you're greater than you think, more powerful than you know, more unlimited than you could ever dream? If that was the truth, that you are the creator of your life. If you believe that to be the truth, then you have to believe in yourself. unconsciously we're always waiting for something out there in our life to change so that we can change
Starting point is 00:03:36 or feel the relief of the lack of what we don't have probably a chronic disbelief that many of us have that we're not creators of our life only when we get the parking space or something good happens to us do we believe that we're the creator of our life but imagine a world where everybody actually took responsibility in being the creator of their life and no longer the victim of their life, I think we would see a dramatic shift in consciousness. If we default and become the victim of our life and we say that some person or some circumstance or some condition is causing me to feel this way and to think this way, the only person that that's hurting and those emotions is really you. It is. It really is. And if the answer is, well, you don't understand I have a reason to feel this way,
Starting point is 00:04:27 then you're not there. You're not beyond your past. Because the stronger the emotion you have to some person or some past event, the more you pay attention to it. Where you place your attention is where you place your energy. You're giving your power away, your life force. Living in fear and living in anger and living in hostility and hatred and judgment and resentment,
Starting point is 00:04:49 that has nothing to do with your future. It has everything to do with the past. The soul can't go to the next adventure if it's holding onto the past. The research shows that 50% of the story we tell in our past isn't even the truth. That means that people are reliving a miserable life they never even had.
Starting point is 00:05:09 And they use the problems, they use the conditions in their life to reaffirm their addiction to that emotion. They need their enemy to feel hatred. And if their enemy died, they'd still feel hatred. Or they'd find another one. They need the bad relationship. They need the bad job in order to feel.
Starting point is 00:05:28 And that's why it's hard to change. The thought and the feeling is making the body become conditioned subconsciously into the past. And so now that becomes their state of being. And now they behave as if they're in their past. And they think as if they're in their past. And how you think, how you act, and how you feel is called your personality. And your personality creates your personal reality. That's it.
Starting point is 00:05:58 That's it. So the present personality who's sitting here today called you is created the present personal reality called your life. That's the truth. Well, everybody has a story, right? The way we make memories is from emotions. So if you have an event in your life that's highly traumatic, just as an example, the moment you perceive that event in your life through your senses, the more the brain freezes a frame and takes a snapshot. And that's called the long-term memory. Every time they review the event in their mind,
Starting point is 00:06:35 they're producing the same chemistry in their brain and body as if the event was occurring. So again, the body's reliving the trauma 50 to 100 times in the day, and now the trauma is no longer in the brain. The trauma is emotionally conditioned in the body, right? So if you say to the person, Why are you so bitter? Why are you so sad?
Starting point is 00:06:57 Why are you so unhappy? They'll say, I am this way because of this event that happened to me 10 years ago, which what they're really saying is after that event, I changed and I have not been able to change since this event. And so the stories we tell about our past are only stories we tell when we feel those emotions. When does the story end? and I'm not certain that insight changes behavior. You could have a realization, or even from an exogenous drug,
Starting point is 00:07:30 you can have a realization or an insight. But if you still can't function in your life and you're still, you know, you're having connected with your wife or you're still dealing with trauma, it hasn't served you at all. So the insight that your father was overbearing or your mother was a perfectionist or you were beaten as a kid,
Starting point is 00:07:48 and that's why you're this way. doesn't change the behavior. The only way you're gonna free yourself from that person or from that past experience is for you to literally overcome the emotion. So God, we've all had people do really horrible things and we've probably done some horrible things to people as well. But I don't think you can free yourself or free them
Starting point is 00:08:12 unless you decide that love is gonna be the thing that heals it. And forgiveness to me is just, Overcoming the emotion. That's it. Okay? Overcome the emotion, you no longer have your attention on that person.
Starting point is 00:08:25 You're calling energy back to you and you're building your own field. And there's energy now to heal. There's energy now to create. There's energy now for the mystical experience. And the side effect of that is forgiveness. It's not something that you have to do. It's just something that automatically happens.
Starting point is 00:08:41 There's a liberation of energy. The heart opens up and the person feels completely different. Now that's when they see their past. And some of them say, I don't want to change. One thing in my past is perfect. I would have never gotten to this moment unless I've been through all of this. One moment their heart opens and all of a sudden they see it all. They see their betrayers.
Starting point is 00:09:07 They have nothing but forgiveness for them. Their body heals. Their mind heals. They completely change. They have another opportunity in life. If you change, your life changes. And nothing changes in our life. until we change. And so you can't do that if you're feeling frustrated or if you're
Starting point is 00:09:24 feeling anger, if you're feeling resentment, you'll always hold the grudge. Your thoughts could make you sick. That's why it's hard to change. Then the question is if your thoughts could make you sick, can your thoughts make you well? And we're actually discovering that that's absolutely possible. Every time you have a thought, you make a chemical. And if you have a happy thought or think of something happy, you turn on a set of neurological networks in your brain that fire in a sequence, a pattern, a combination, that makes you feel a certain way as you secrete a certain hormone.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Okay, the moment you start to feel happy, the moment you start to feel joyful, your brain is checking in with your body, saying, Chris, you're feeling pretty joyful. And so then the chemistry influences you to think more wonderful thoughts. But you could have thoughts that make you feel guilty, and you can turn on a different set of circuits in your brain
Starting point is 00:10:19 to make you feel differently. The moment you feel miserable, the moment you feel victimized, the moment you feel suffering, the moment you feel pain, and you can't think greater than how you feel, the brain's checking out with the body and saying you're really miserable and it generates more corresponding thoughts equal to that feeling. So it's thinking and feeling and feeling and thinking. This loop of thinking and feeling and feeling and thinking creates a state of being. And again, you can become addicted to your own thoughts and people become addicted to the life they don't even like. So in order to change, if you were wanted to arrive at a new goal or new vision of your future, you'd have to change something about yourself in order to get there. And you'd have to change the way you think, the way you act, and the way you feel.
Starting point is 00:11:04 I think in so many ways that a belief is an unconscious process, a belief is a thought you keep thinking over and over again until it's hardwired in your brain. And most beliefs are based on past experiences. And so many people have a belief about something that has to change in order for them to arrive at a new place in their life. There's two times the door to the subconscious mind opens up when you wake up in the morning and when you go to bed at night. So those are really key times if you want to reprogram your subconscious mind. So it's important for us to in the morning or the evening instead of reaching for our cell phone and checking our texts and our WhatsApp. app and our telegram and our social media and our Instagram and our Twitter and they get connected
Starting point is 00:11:53 to everything known in their life. Before you start that, try this out as an experiment, before you start your day, instead of falling into that redundant habit, literally go inward and forget about your outer world. No longer think about anything out there. And if you were sitting there in silence, aware of nothing but you. And you said, okay, what is the greatest expression of myself I can be today. Let me think about how I do want to feel today. Let me open my heart to life again. Let me feel kindness and care and love and gratitude and appreciation. Let me bring up that feeling. Let me feel it with my heart and ask yourself, can I stay in the state my entire day? Today I want to talk about a force so profound, so transformative that it can change the very
Starting point is 00:12:41 fabric of our lives. This force is gratitude. The two emotions that destroy your relationship, your business, your life, it's fear and anger. Those are two extremes. What's the emotion I want to train? Gratitude. He can't be grateful and fearful simultaneously. He can't be angry and grateful simultaneously. So what I do is I start my day and make those changes
Starting point is 00:13:03 and I close my eyes or I look out of the water and I think of three things that I'm grateful for for just a minute each. I find 10 things to be grateful for before my feet hit the ground. And especially if I'm feeling strained in stress, I go over my gratitude list because gratitude will reduce stress all day long. In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often overlook the power of simply being thankful. But let me tell you, gratitude is not just a feeling. It's a way of life.
Starting point is 00:13:35 There's nothing you'll ever accomplish that's more remarkable than that you have a chance to accomplish something. When you're so grateful for the at-bat, you're hacked? When we unpack the architecture of a winning mentality, we're dealing with somebody. That every single day they're beating on their crab and they're closing the gap. They are crystal clear about where they are and where they're looking to go. This is the type of person that's got tunnel vision. They move in the dimension of mindfulness and gratitude. Say thank you for your heart that knows how to mend when it's broken.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Show gratitude for your composure that helps you control your emotions. I stand here. Stand here. In my greatness. In my greatness. I own my light. I own my life. I own my brilliance.
Starting point is 00:14:25 I am bold. I am courageous. I'm perfect. In my imperfection. This is my time. This is my time. This is my time. I'm bright enough.
Starting point is 00:14:43 I'm old enough. I'm young enough. I've experienced enough. I'm wise enough. I understand. I understand that I am enough. Enough. Breathe.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Own it. Own it. If you're in a state of gratitude, it makes total sense, then you will accept, believe, and surrender the thoughts that are equal to that emotional state. And you could actually program your autonomic nervous system to make the pharmacy of chemicals that causes growth and repair to happen in the body. You start feeling gratitude. You start feeling more gratitude. You start feeling love. You start feeling more love.
Starting point is 00:15:30 You start feeling kindness, start feeling care, you start feeling appreciation, you start feeling creative, you start feeling inspired. You practice feeling those emotions. And you get that part of yours back into balance. We discover that once energy makes it to the heart, it's going right to the brain. They take three minutes and it's kind of like a blessing or prayer for the people around me, for the people I love. And there's been a lot of studies that Dalai Lama and others have done on compassion for strangers, what it does to your brain. And then the last three minutes I call three to thrive where I focus for a minute each on something I really want to make happen. I get thanks for it as it's done. I see it as done. I experience it is done. I wire my
Starting point is 00:16:08 particular activating system. So now it's going to notice anything that relates to that, but it has a joyous feeling to it as well. And I'm done in 10 minutes and I'm ready to rock and roll. I'm trying to get people to practice reframing their perspective. I practice gratitude every day. If I wake up in the morning and nobody I love passed away or came down with a terminal illness, then my day starts off great. When I wake up today, every single place, I wake up grateful. I wake up happy. I wake up excited. Pause and reflect on what you're grateful for. This simple act can turn darkness into life, struggle into strength.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Embrace the power of gratitude and let it be the foundation of your journey. Be grateful for life. Be grateful for your children. Hug your loved ones. Tomorrow's that promise. We all got to fight. Because winning is not. It's not just an exterior thing. It is very much an interior thing. Winning has everything to do with your mentality. It has everything to do with how you talk, how you walk, how you think, how you overcome conflict, how you navigate a room, how you navigate relationships, how you manage your time, how you manage your money.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Winning! It's not just an end thing, it's not just a crown or a trophy. It is the process. It is not just what I want. It is who I am becoming. to carry the power of gratitude with you. Let it illuminate your path, strengthen your spirit,
Starting point is 00:17:48 and deepen your connection. Nelson Mandela said, there is no passion to be found playing small in settling for a life that's less than the one you're capable of living. Anything you could think of, if you could actually think of it, it means you can do it, right?
Starting point is 00:18:11 Does that make sense? So if it pops up in your brain, it means that you have the ability to do it. Why? Because the brain would never think of something that it could not do. So don't be afraid to go outside the box. Don't be afraid to think outside the box.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Don't be afraid to dream big. One of the tricky things I think with people is they haven't ever stopped to think about what they want because they think they can't have it. and so to think about what they want is too painful. What people think about you and the possibilities for your dream is none of your business. They have no imagination, ladies and gentlemen. They're living out of the past, out of their memory.
Starting point is 00:18:56 The attitude is it can't be done because they haven't seen it. Let's say you wanted to start a podcast in the past, and you did three episodes, and then you fell off. And so then Criticizer gets one point, and then they think, I told you so. Why are you doing another kick like this? Oh, you're going to try that now. Okay, here we go again. The thing is that you are still closer,
Starting point is 00:19:18 having done three than having done zero. But you don't get it, Gary. I've lost my whole life. And just because you've been losing doesn't mean you can't win. I call it the Monday Night miracle thesis. The Monday Night miracle is when the New York Jets were losing to the Miami Dolphins
Starting point is 00:19:33 on Monday night football 30 to 7 with like 10 minutes left in a game. And came all the way back in one. just because you've sucked at life and you're like, it's not true, I'm not awesome, I've lost at everything. Drug abuse, lost my loved one, like losing, like by how we would all consider it.
Starting point is 00:19:53 I literally believe that you can win. And many have. When you deploy love, not hate. So many have poison in their soul. They've got to get it out. As you think, so you become. The mind is like, like a factory, a mental factory.
Starting point is 00:20:14 And whatever you think about all day long pours ingredients into this mental factory. Can you imagine dumping a barrel of trash into this mental factory every day and coming out with a rich, dynamic, positive life? It can't be done. And it starts with thought. Everything starts with thought.
Starting point is 00:20:33 So you must be wise and careful what you think about because that starts everything. The easiest thing I've done was to get out from under the labels and to live the life that I live. The most difficult thing I've ever done was to believe that I can do it. I think every thought that you have makes a chemical. And you can have thoughts that make you feel good and thoughts that make you feel bad. If 90% of the thoughts that we think are the same thoughts as the day before, the same thoughts lead to the same choices.
Starting point is 00:21:13 But I do think that if you think differently and you learn new information and you have new thoughts, if you can make new choices and demonstrate new behaviors and create new experiences and arrive at new goals and feel new emotions, I would say that's evolution. And I think that people really, really secretly believe in themselves on some level. And I think being defined by a vision of the future or really always, always dreaming of of another great experience, I think is a great reason to wake up in the morning. And you could live a very, you know, contained life.
Starting point is 00:21:50 You're scared of being ridiculed. You're scared of humiliation. You're scared of saying, I want to do great things, and then not doing great things. But I would argue saying you want to do great things and not doing great things is better than just not doing anything. I'm not saying anything. Give it a crack.
Starting point is 00:22:07 If you're going to do it, do it. Say what you can do. Do what you say. You can't do it. Don't say you can do it. Don't over leverage yourself. Don't over leverage the decision and then jump in and kind of dip a toe.
Starting point is 00:22:23 I think I'll try it out. Now think if you're going to try it out beforehand, but when it's time to go, dive. Finish it, find out. Come out the other side. Don't leave it and go, if I just scored it, uh-uh. That keeps me up at night.
Starting point is 00:22:35 I think it keeps a lot of us up at night. When you half-assed something, you just don't know, whether you've failed or, succeeded God what you want or didn't get what you want finding out and looking in the mirror and going I didn't have acid I went all the way I found out and that ain't for me or I found out and you damn right that is for me that's a great place to get to smart people like the idea of being cynical because it seems like you've considered all of the options only somebody that's a you know a smooth
Starting point is 00:23:02 brained idiot would believe that things are going to go well they obviously you know that's what that's what that's what that's what the normy midwits think but it fails to recognize to that your experience of your life is largely determined by the story that you tell yourself about it. If you have judgmental parents or judgmental friends or judgmental whatever's and you date people and you bring them home, if they say, I don't think this is the girl for you, they're right every single time your entire life, except for the one person that you decide to marry. And then they are absolutely wrong at the time that it mattered most. And the thing is, is they get to say on your sixth girlfriend and seventh girlfriend and eighth girlfriend, because let's face it, you've been alive for a while.
Starting point is 00:23:44 I have a perfect, I have a perfect guess. I'm right 100% of the time. This rule will see how long this one lasts. And two years in, they're like, see, you finally broke up with her. I told you the beginning it wasn't going to last. Well, it never lasts except for the one that's going to stick. Duh. And the business never works until it's the one that does.
Starting point is 00:24:04 It's not about them being right or wrong. Again, it's about how right and how wrong they could be. And so it's just about directional correctness and realizing that criticizers are more often correct, but when it matters most, incorrect. The amount of people that quit three weeks before their shit that they spent four years on pops off is it's a real number.
Starting point is 00:24:33 It's happened quite a bit in the world. The amount of people that quit their life's dream the day before it was going to click breaks my heart. There was a time in my room, and I'll never forget this. 2008, I just got cut from the Seahawks. I'm in my parents' house because I don't want to go out. Looking around my room, all the trophies,
Starting point is 00:24:54 all the jerseys, see my one-year-old son. And I said, man, is this it? Is this the mecca of my life? and something inside of my soul said, it's not it. It's just the beginning. And there was no external evidence of that. I had to trust that internal knowing that this was it. One of the best things you can ever do in your life is to change your words.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Your tongue, your words have the ability to shape your world. You got to get to a place where you say, you know what, I gotta stop talking about what I don't have and who's not here and what someone didn't give me. I gotta stop talking death and I gotta start talking life. When you look at your life, I promise you there is a connection between the life you live and the words you have spoken. Because my words can change and shift my world. So many people rehearse mentally what they're about to do. And when they do that, they actually prime their brain.
Starting point is 00:26:08 They actually can change their brain and change their body just by thought alone. What thoughts do I want to fire and wire in my brain? Let me become familiar with those. What behaviors do I want to demonstrate? What would greatness do? What would be the feeling that I want to feel if I was able to do it? Would it be worth? Would it be self-love?
Starting point is 00:26:27 Would it be freedom? Would it be joy? Let me teach my body emotionally what a future could actually feel like before it happens. The more you rehearse it mentally, the more you prime your brain and body for the act. So you could actually practice rehearsing how you're going to change in your life. Teach your body emotionally that there's another way to feel and do it over and over again to become familiar to you. Intentionally act like the person you want to become. That's not fake until you make it, by the way.
Starting point is 00:26:56 This is intentional because when you intentionally act like the person you want to become, your brain sees you taking those actions so your brain starts to change the way it relates to you. Everyone says, I want to be the world's best tennis play. I want to be the world's best basketball player. I want to be the world's greatest podcaster. That's already been done. There's another level. You're not thinking big enough.
Starting point is 00:27:24 The process it takes to be number one and stay at number one. Your dreams and thoughts better be so big that they better scare you. It has to be something that nobody else has thought about before or done before. What success looks like for any individual person is going to be different. Unfortunately, you can't take somebody else's purpose or success. You can't wear it as a suit. It's a bad idea, right? Because it's going to not fit.
Starting point is 00:27:54 If something doesn't fit, eventually it's going to hurt wearing it. If you're not careful with how you design what it is that you chase after, you can spend your entire life realizing that you clearly. climbed a very, very long ladder that was leaning up against the wrong wall. I truly think that the thing that I've suffered from the most in my life, as I look at Kobe and, you know, all these pictures of these great people, you know, dude, I just thought too small. True desire in the heart, that itch that you have, that thing that you want to do to help others and to grow and to make money, that desire, that itch, that's God's proof to you.
Starting point is 00:28:28 Sent beforehand already to indicate that it's yours. You only get one ride around this thing. You don't think big.
