Starting point is 00:00:00 David Gagins, you did it! Good job. David Gagins! It's the summer of 2007, and David Gagans has just completed America's toughest ultra-marathon under extreme conditions. And your time is 25 hours, 49 minutes and 40 seconds. Yeah! Even though he has just achieved his personal best, something is wrong. Onlookers are congratulating him and chanting his name, but he is emotion.
Starting point is 00:00:30 This is because this isn't David's first time coming out on the other side of darkness. He's been through this many times. I had to use all this negative shit that was making me weak and horrible as a person. I had to use this as the power that now fueled me. I had to flip it on his head and say, hold up. This might be exactly what I need. The darkness is exactly what I is. what I need is how you look at your situation.
Starting point is 00:01:02 The most important conversation you'll ever have in your life is when you have yourself. And my conversation was absolutely horrifying. What were you saying to yourself? I'm dumb. I'm nobody. So when you're growing up with all this stuff, all this hate, it wasn't the beatings. I could get the beatings all day.
Starting point is 00:01:21 It was a mental torture. So when at a young age, your parents put a dialogue in you of confidence, or you're nobody. So that voice in my head was I'm a loser. You have to face that in that dark room. In that dark room is who you are. But in that dark room is where you have to create
Starting point is 00:01:42 another human being that walks out of that dark room. When you really sit back at your life in that dark room and you're looking at where you started from and you tell yourself, my mom is this way, my soon-by stepdad got, My dad beat the shit out of me. I can't read and write to save my fucking soul.
Starting point is 00:02:03 I've lied about it to everybody. I've cheated on all these tests. My God, man. And then you put a goal in your mind. How are you going to feel, man, when you accomplish this goal coming from that shit? Coming from the fucking hell you came from. A lot of people start from a good starting point. They have a good foundation.
Starting point is 00:02:23 What if you can surpass all of these motherfuckers? Really, no one came to save you. No. I had a learning disability. My focus in life was way off. I was afraid. I was afraid of everything. And when you have that kind of foundation
Starting point is 00:02:39 growing up, and that's where you start life at, is being abused and also working all nights at a skating rink, not going to school, and you have a guy who's an alcoholic, and the second he got drunk, he got mad. And so our house lived in fear.
Starting point is 00:02:59 And the one thing that you can't ever get out of a kid's mind is your mom's face. The terror of your mom's face. So, you know, I didn't care about my brother. I didn't care about me. But I saw this woman go from Mary Poppins, the sweetest person on the planet Earth. And when you see your mom start to transform to a shell to a person whose face becomes stoic, a person who has no emotion and that changes a kid
Starting point is 00:03:31 and when you're young and you have to grow up so fast so about eight years old my mind was of a of a 40 year olds at eight you know my family like life came at me and it makes your brain you know you're not outside playing with kids
Starting point is 00:03:48 you know you're trying to avoid getting beat when you have all this negativity growing up and now you're cheating and you're doing this and your dad beat you when your mom's fiance gets murdered. And tragedy, it's a tragedy. And then you come to this. And your mom's working three jobs.
Starting point is 00:04:07 You know, she's not home at all. She never saw one report card of mine. She didn't know how bad off I was in school. She was hustling trying to make money. And I was the man in the house lying, sneaking around, not going to school, cheating, right, everything I could. She was in a dark place. And I was in a dark place.
Starting point is 00:04:25 And we were kind of on our own. in the same house but living different lives. And I realized at this time my life, she was a great mom, but I was on my own. And that's when a real big change happened for me, so I said, I want to join the military. Every place I went in the military, there was this ethos about how this place is, how we're going to live, how we're going to represent ourselves. And I walked around, and I saw that most people didn't live up to that ethos. like if you go to whatever, whatever company, they have this mission statement on how we want to run our company.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I made one for myself on how I want to be. And that is why if people can make up a mission statement, an ethos in which they want to live by, and every morning you wake up, you hold yourself accountable to that mission, that accompanies your own. Make up your own mission statement. What do you want to?
Starting point is 00:05:25 to be in life. And once you do that, now you can work with somebody to get better. You can work with yourself to get better. But until you know what you want to stand for, you will always just be sitting down. You'll never stand for anything. I hate it jumping out of airplanes. I hate it shooting guns. I hated the job as a Navy SEAL. But I did it because I wanted to change myself. Everything I do I'm not really comfortable doing. But if you choose to go that route, to go be a Navy SEAL, you might as well go be the hardest motherfucker in the world. Because if you're choosing to do something, you have two routes.
Starting point is 00:06:04 You can go there and be a little weak person and get through barely, and that's your reputation. Or you can go through the hardest guy you can possibly be, and that's your reputation. So my whole thing is if you're going to choose to open that fucking door in Iraq or Afghanistan, open the motherfucker and go in hard. Because they're going to remember you by slowly opening it and peeking in. So if you're going to open it
Starting point is 00:06:30 and you made the mind to open it, don't crack it open. Open the fucking door, go in. That's what life. If you choose to do something, attack it. You have to make those insecurities, those fears. Like when I was 300 pounds,
Starting point is 00:06:43 I didn't have any drive. I'm going to go be a Navy seal. What kind of stupid shit is that, 300 pounds? There wasn't like a drive to go be Navy SEAL. I was an insecure, lying kid, afraid. I had to look in my insecurities and in my fear and find drive in that. We're all looking for passion. Passion's all around you.
Starting point is 00:07:05 You have a whole fucking stack of it all around you. It's your insecurities, all that shit. You got to dive deep in that shit. It's all in there. All the energy and fuel you need is right in yourself. It's all there. You got a lot of stuff to do to overcome and you know that's where I found it I found it right there in my own insecurities. I found drive in my own insecurities and that's that's the most powerful thing in the world when you can find drive in your own doubt fear insecurities
Starting point is 00:07:37 you become very unstoppable we can't live like this we can't live in fear we can't live in judgment We can't be afraid of what the fuck people right now are looking at me saying about me. We cannot be afraid of that. That's Goggins. Goggins saying fuck all of you who don't like me, who don't want to, and that person then comes in. But you have to be David Goggins and say, man, I'm afraid of this, I'm fucked up here. Life made me this way here. I stutter.
Starting point is 00:08:06 I have these issues with reading and writing and I'm fat and I'm insecure. That's the only way you're going to get over. all those things. You have to create someone else. Not like you have two different personalities. It is you, but you have to find strength and that visualization of almost me cracking out Goggins, like almost like that Superman Cape, like I'm coming out a different person, a person that doesn't give a fuck about anything, who doesn't care about being judged, who knows I'm weak, who knows I'm afraid, who says whatever you think about me, take it, whatever, I'm here. That's Godgins. In the dark room,
Starting point is 00:08:44 You face yourself. You realize you want to be better. You realize you don't want to be this weak, insecure person in the world. He has all these problems that we all have. We all have. So many of us come from these small places in our mind that we're not willing to think outside of only what we've seen. Our mind works in such a small compartment.
Starting point is 00:09:10 And one thing I was able to do was to dream, but don't make dreams your fucking master. But I was able to dream outside those fucking four walls of that small town. And until you're able to really put yourself into that dream, but don't make dreams your master,
Starting point is 00:09:30 that's where you truly become what you're destined to become. What do you mean don't make dreams your master? A lot of people sit back and they dream about being a sports figure or dream about being a sports figure. Or dream about being a... seal or dream about being an astronaut and all it is is a motherfucking dream they don't put the work
Starting point is 00:09:48 behind the dream that dream has become their fucking master when you become the master of your fucking dream is when you say i want to go be a navy seal and you say okay i'm going to lose 106 pounds less than three fucking months the dream was the one thing i thought about and the dream was now gone now what comes in the dream goes away in the fucking laundry list of fucking deep details and tasks come up. God do this, God do this, God do this, God do this. That's when you become the master of your dream. I don't care what you believe in.
Starting point is 00:10:21 It doesn't matter. I'm not judging anybody. But let's say my thing is God. You get to heaven. I'm 300 pounds. I sit down. I was a cockroach terminated my whole life. And we're sitting down just like this.
Starting point is 00:10:32 You're God and I'm David. And he gives me that chart. And he says, look at this. Now look at this chart. And on the chart it has all these different things but my name's on it. But these things aren't me. I was going to change the world.
Starting point is 00:10:47 I was going to set records. I was going to be a Navy seal. I was going to be all these things in the military that I accomplished. You're going to get the VFW award. You can be honored here, honored there. I'm like, God, I was, this isn't me. Like it said, David Guggins, I was an eco-lap guy. I sprayed for cockroaches, and I'm 300 pounds.
Starting point is 00:11:05 It said, here, I'm 185. It says, here, I got a bachelor's and a master's. It says all these things. And God goes, no, that's who you were supposed to be. Wow. My biggest fear in life is if there is a final resting place in this world, and there's a final judgment, and you talk to something much bigger than you. I don't want to sit down and have a conversation with someone
Starting point is 00:11:33 with something that says, you're in heaven. This is what you should have been on earth. and are you really in heaven now or are you in hell? It's the moments of in that room by myself studying for hours and hours and I was trying to catch up with all the kids who were above me it's just those moments like the real raw moments of life that was like boom hit me and we're gone but I was like I did that I overcame that shit you know it's like it's just power behind all that shit
Starting point is 00:12:06 And that's the feeling I was looking for in my life. I found it. It wasn't money, it wasn't fame, it wasn't awards. It was that feeling I have right now. The feeling I'm about to break down, but it's not of like, oh my God, I'm upset. It's like I worked myself so hard that I turned a person this fucked up
Starting point is 00:12:33 into this motherfucker right here off of going to work on myself and saying, I don't know how to do this, but I know that to get over there, that fucking side, I got to grind myself into a fucking fine powder. And I did it. I did it all for sure will. And very few people will know how that feels.
