The Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has agreed to a deal to become the Chicago Bears next head coach. Johnson has been
Starting point is 00:03:03 the Lions offensive coordinator for the past three seasons. And if I'm not mistaken, I think they finish in the top five in offense each of those seasons. He will fill the job vacated by Matt Eberflus when they fire him on November 29th. Johnson will become the 19th head coach in the 105-year franchise existence. Ocho, do you like the hire? You got damn right I like the hire. You got damn right. Now, hire. You got damn right. Now, listen, we talk about Ben Johnson now.
Starting point is 00:03:28 We talk about Ben Johnson that worked wonders with Jared Goff, worked wonders offensively with that offense. The creativity that has amazed all of us all season long. Now, you know, Dan Campbell loves to go forward on fourth down. Why do you think he's so confident in doing some of the things he does as a head coach? Because of Ben Johnson and what he's able to do. So I look at it from this standpoint. You got Jameson Williams.
Starting point is 00:03:53 You got Amon Ross St. Brown. You got Laporta. Now you go to another supporting cast in Chicago that different skill sets, but they get the job done very well. Right. You have a great quarterback, dual threat quarterback, who's a little bit more mobile, a little bit more agile, can play off script a little better than golf, and Kaden Williams. He's a good thrower of the ball as well.
Starting point is 00:04:17 This is going to be a perfect relationship, not only for Ben Johnson, but for Kaden Williams and his career. I guarantee you, and I'm going to put it out there right now. And it's going to be a, I told you so moment when the season starts and we, we about, we,
Starting point is 00:04:30 we in about maybe week seven or week eight. And I'd be like, I told you so. Caleb Williams being one of the top quarterbacks in the league statistically because of Ben Johnson and his creativity and his offensive prowess. Watch. I like the hire. Yeah. I like the hire. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:45 I like the hire also. But what I don't like. What? Chicago and New England doing that fake stuff. Bring black coaches in there when they know damn well they're not going to hire them.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Yeah, yeah, yeah. They brought Eddie George in there and you know, look, you got to take it. Yeah, yeah. You know damn well they won't. Excuse me. But you know good and de, yeah. You know damn well they want, excuse me,
Starting point is 00:05:06 but you know good and D-well, you know good and D-well, you wanted Ben Johnson. Right. But, Ocho, hey, the Rooney rule, I gotta get that quote. Same thing in New England.
Starting point is 00:05:19 New England, y'all brought two Blacks, y'all brought Pep Hamill to the end, y'all brought this other Black, you know good and well, Byron Lethbridge, y'all know good, first of all, brought Pep Hamilton in. Y'all brought this other black. You know good and well. Yeah. Byron Lethbridge. Y'all know good. First of all, Byron Lethbridge been out of the league for what?
Starting point is 00:05:30 Two years. Mm-hmm. And y'all going to bring him in. Now, he ain't got no office according to him, but y'all brought him in. Yeah. And see, what y'all did, the Patriots did that thing so good, they brought two of them in. Ooh, ooh. Ooh, they brought two of them. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:44 I mean, listen, they have to check the boxes, though. They have to check the boxes they gotta check the boxes like you said you gotta meet the quota you have to satisfy the rule that's in place that's really not working ain't got no tea to it but look I like the hire
Starting point is 00:05:59 I like Ben Johnson I like what he did you mentioned it he has a quarterback that's more mobile he He has very good look. You got Roman Dunes that he took in the first round for the Bears. You got DJ Moore that you signed to a contract extension. You got Keenan Allen. I think Keenan Allen's a free agent, so you probably bring him back because he came on strong at the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:06:17 He's that guy that he's not as fast, he's not as quick as Amon Rod in the slot, but he gets it done. He got tremendous moves. He got great hands. I like him. He's not as quick as Amon Raw in the slot, but he gets it done. He got tremendous moves. He got great hands. I like him. He's a big body. He can body you up. So I like that.
Starting point is 00:06:32 I like their—I don't really know their running back situation. You're going to have to improve the offensive line. DeAndre Swift. Because that's one thing. DeAndre Swift. Yeah. Offensive liners, you're going to probably get better because you look at what they got in Detroit. You know, you got
Starting point is 00:06:46 Pene Sewell, who's a pro bowler, all pro. You got Zeitler. You got Glass now. You got Decker. You got Ragnar. You got, you know, Detroit has a very good offensive line. And so you're going to have to get that up to par in Chicago because your quarterback took 60 plus sacks.
Starting point is 00:07:02 That's too many Ocho. That's way too many sacks. Now, all of it is not on the offensive line. Caleb Williams is going to have to do a better job of getting rid of the football. It's okay to throw it away. Because sometimes I think, guys, they get caught up, Ocho, well, I'm going to mess up my completion percentage. Bro, throw that damn ball away. You don't want to be taking all those hits.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Right, right. But I like the hire. I'm sure they got money and cap space that they can improve this team. I love the hire by Ben Johnson. I got no qualms about that hire. He's put his time in as an offensive coordinator, as an offensive coach. I think it was the right time for him to get this job. So I really like the hire.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I'm a little surprised that he went in the same division as his former boss. Normally they get away, Ocho. But hey, that was the best situation. I always thought that the Bears, for me, that was the best situation that was available to me. I mean, other people,
Starting point is 00:07:59 people like the Raiders, you know, because Tom Brady didn't play a quarterback. Ain't none of the work over there, huh? Ain't got no quarterback. Yeah, so you understood that that was the best fit,
Starting point is 00:08:10 especially for him and what he brings to the table. Yeah, I thought that was the best. I thought that the Jets, you got the Jets situation. You got a lot of stuff going on with the Jets. What other job is available, Ocho?
Starting point is 00:08:22 The Jets was available. Saints. The Saints. The Saints. The Saints. Hopefully, A.G. gets the Saints or the Jets. I know, I think he, you know, obviously, A.G. played with the Jets. Hell, he played with the Saints also. He was on the defensive staff.
Starting point is 00:08:37 He was on Sean Payton's staff when he was at the Saints. So, but hopefully, he gets one of these jobs. It's going to be tough without a quarterback. You got to find a quarterback, Ocho. Without that, you don't really have a chance to have longevity. Your lease is going to be short. Your lease is very short if you ain't got no quarterback. Well, our lease is short anyway.
Starting point is 00:08:56 But anyway, that's not what's there. We'll talk about that another day. But I like the hire. I like Ben Johnson hire. Chicago should be good. That's a very tough division, Ocho. You got young, we'll see what Minnesota does
Starting point is 00:09:12 with Sam Donald. Do they move on or do they elevate J.J. McCarthy? Going to be very interesting because you got Jordan Love, you got golf, you got Caleb Williams. So I like it.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Cowboys have officially hired Brian Schottenheimer, who was their offensive coordinator last year. Jared made the move and he was comfortable. Now, mind you. Now, remember the reports that came out. Jerry really liked Deion and Steven Stephen really wanted Brian Shotton. And he really wanted – Jerry really liked Coach Prime, but Stephen, ooh, they were really butt heads.
Starting point is 00:09:57 And I came over and said, Ocho, that's some bull. Smoking mirror. Everybody knew it was some bull job, but it was just something to smoke screen. Hey, we talked to Coach Prime. That's our minority. Hey, that's our one token boom we get on we go with that and uh the cowboys notably they didn't interview any of the top candidates the ben johnson uh cliff kingsbury couldn't talk because he was in the uh he was going week to week so you only had your you could only talk if you were in the high week so naggy
Starting point is 00:10:25 spagnola uh eric g erin glenn none of the top candidates were interviewed by jerry brian schottenheimer again my only problem with you i don't have a problem chat i don't want anybody to think that i have a problem with the hire but don't give me this bull job you want somebody that called plays mike mccarthy called plays yes see we want somebody with previous head coaching experience we want somebody that called plays brian schottenheimer has never been a call head coach he didn't call plays that's neither here nor there oh joe what do you think about that obviously jerry wants to continue continue his reign with power. He doesn't want to relinquish that power. He wants to be in control of everything.
Starting point is 00:11:10 And he hired a coach that will fall in line with just that. And bring, you know, what else, Ocho? Not to cut you off, bring Jason Witten. Oh, yeah, yeah, most definitely, most definitely. So, again, Jerry getting in the way, again, doing things his way, and the definition
Starting point is 00:11:32 of insanity, chat, you stay with me now, the definition of insanity is doing things over and over and over in a way you see fit and expecting different results. The results have been the same for years.
Starting point is 00:11:47 For years. And you continuously do it. Jason Garrett, Mike McCarthy, now Mr. Schottenheimer. Nothing is going to change until you remove yourself and get out the way and allow people to do their job. Not you trying to do multiple things
Starting point is 00:12:04 at once. Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett, Mike McCarthy, now Brian Schottenheimer, all of them. Nothing changed. It's just different names, but nothing's changed. Any of the people that you just called, were any of them chall you? Were any of them challenging you? They don't know. My point exactly.
Starting point is 00:12:30 And you let him feel your staff. And you let him like, well, I want this guy to be on your defensive staff. I want this guy to be on your offensive staff. No coach is going to do that. No, no, no. They're not going to do that. That's if it's one thing. I go to a company and I'm looking around,
Starting point is 00:12:48 I'm going to give them an opportunity. That don't mean I'm going to keep them. But if I like what I hear, I'll keep them. But I'm not going to let you tell me, well, you got to keep this VP or you got to keep this CFO or you got to keep this CEO.
Starting point is 00:13:00 No, hell no. That ain't happening. I mean, but this hurt another thing ojo not one other team attempted to interview brian schottenheimer now all i want to know is this look i will get me somebody somebody else won't because if if no nobody else wanted that's something you're trying to tell me something i don't know well you, you've got to think about it now. Look at the elephant in the room.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Now, the coaches that were available, we talk about good coaches, and also the coaches that were also available that could have come to Dallas, that could have interviewed in Dallas, wouldn't go for the shenanigans. You think Ben Johnson's going to stand down? You're going to tell Ben Johnson who we can bring on and who we can't? Aaron Glenn? I mean, obviously he wouldn't get the job anyway. You think Aaron Glenn is going to come to Dallas? You're going to tell Aaron Glenn what type of staff he can
Starting point is 00:13:52 put together? But people believe he can work with Coach Belichick. Can you imagine him telling Coach Belichick, hey, I want Jason Witten to come on and he's going to be your coach at weighting? Man, Belichick is going to tear that goddamn that goddamn Jerry's world down absolutely not you have to get out of your own way you have to
Starting point is 00:14:14 you don't have a choice he's been an offensive coordinator before he's with the Jets for three years his highest points per game they were 13th offensive coordinator before he's with the jets for three years uh his highest point his highest uh points per game they were 13th um he called for st louis the highest points per game was 21st he also called in seattle his highest points per game was six in 2018 he had two three top 10 offenses as far as points he averaged 28.7 25.3 26.8 um and then that ended and this was his first foray back as being a coordinator correct okay um so he's been a
Starting point is 00:14:59 coordinator he's been a coordinator for 11 years had some success, orchestrated three top 10 offenses in Seattle, none in the top 20 in St. Louis, and none in the top 10 at the Jets. He's with the Jets. He's with the Jets. But he wasn't a coordinator, though, was he? He was. He was? Okay.
Starting point is 00:15:22 Okay. Okay. So he was there with well a Rex oh okay okay okay okay okay so we know those offenses back there no Joe was running the football play behind your defense it was more ground and pound but his most success it came in Seattle he did have great success in Seattle with Russ, 16 points per game, ninth in points per game,
Starting point is 00:15:50 eighth in points per game. That's pretty good resume. But we know why he got the job. It's because Jerry wants someone that he can control. It's really that simple. There's no other, I'm not going to make it a black white issue because I don't believe it's a black white issue. It's a control issue.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Jerry wants control. Jerry wants control because Jerry wants credit. None of the blame, but the control because this thing fell apart. I can't believe this happened. I'm shocked as anybody. No, you're not shocked as anybody. You put this together. You should be the least shocked that it fell apart
Starting point is 00:16:25 but like you said if i mean you do what you've done you get what you've always gotten it's hard for me to believe i can be in a scenario at some point in time i'm going to change something if i do if i get the same results for 30 years and my objective but jerry's a promoter jerry's not trying to win jerry's not fooling me he might fool some of the fans in dallas and i think for the most part they've even caught on jerry's all about selling jerry looks at it like anytime they're talking about me that's good enough we don't need to talk they don't need to talk about me winning championship they don't need to talk about me being bad. They're talking about me.
Starting point is 00:17:06 So I'm in the news. That's good enough for him. And I don't see it changing. They bring back the same, Casper. If you look at guys leave Dallas and play well. Look at now Neville Gallimore. He went to the Rams. Ball out.
Starting point is 00:17:26 I'm just saying. They make a trade for a guy at Carolina. Mingo. They give a fourth-round draft pick, and the guy had – he might have had four catches. Mingo? Yes. Yeah, obviously. Man, listen.
Starting point is 00:17:39 I don't know what Jerry is doing. I can't question it. I've been around football for a very long time. Obviously, not as long as you have and not as long as he has. He's an owner. He's a GM. Hell, he's every goddamn thing. He just thinks his way always works.
Starting point is 00:17:54 And the fact that he wants credit is just beyond me. You know, when you can look at the landscape of the NFL with all the owners that consistently win, all the other franchises where they win consistently, you know, the Packers, the Bills, the Chiefs, the Steelers. I mean, teams that have a rich history in winning, you know, in the past. The Eagles. Everybody's going to the championship since he's been. You don't see any of the owners front and center making decisions you know pigeon holding head coaches not allowing them
Starting point is 00:18:30 to pick their staff people that they work well with i mean all that all that matters all that matters and the fact that control and credit is what he wants is ridiculous. And it's talking to franchise. Jerry has probably, let's just say for the sake of it, let's just be safe. He owned 10 other businesses. How many of those businesses do you think he has on?
Starting point is 00:18:58 Probably none. None, because he doesn't know. But yet, he thinks he knows football. He's been around football the longest, yet, he thinks he knows football. But he's been around football the longest, so he feels like he knows it. Yeah. I've been around a plow.
Starting point is 00:19:14 It doesn't make me a tractor. What the hell are you talking about? Just because you're around something. Hey, as a matter of fact, Ocho, I'm sleeping in my garage tonight. That don't make me a car that's a good one I got you I'm just trying to figure out what makes him think
Starting point is 00:19:30 he knows just because you're around something hell Ocho if somebody gonna give me all the scouting report I can read off what they wrote down you'll think Jerry going to the senior bowl and out there looking at Scott, got his notepad
Starting point is 00:19:46 like, okay, guy got great pad level, drops his hip, great transition, change of direction. Oh, he bends the edge really well. I like the way he button press. Yeah, he don't know. Yeah, he not detailing sharp like that.
Starting point is 00:20:00 Obviously. Hell no. But there are guys that do. What's the guy name that runs the Cowboys? Will McClay. Will Clay. He knows. He writes the
Starting point is 00:20:16 notes, gives them to Jerry, and they have a little selection, okay? And who do we think is going to be available when we select at the time we select? They give them a list of names. Everybody have their thing. Well, Jerry, this is what we need.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Okay, Jerry, this is what we need. Bro, Michael Parsons fell in your lap. You ain't do nothing. CD fell in your lap. Come on, bro. That ain't nothing. They fell to you. They had an agreement. Devontae Smith, the Eagles wanted Devontae Smith.
Starting point is 00:20:49 They's like, hey, we'll trade up, just don't bother him. We'll let y'all trade. Okay, fine. Just don't select Parsons. Or y'all not going to select Parsons, you're going to take Devontae, right? Okay, boom. See, they fell in their lap. All the other receivers were gone.
Starting point is 00:21:04 So who are they going to pick? They needed a receiver. Jenna was gone. Judy was gone. Ross was gone. Waddle was gone. Wow, he really went out on a limb and got a CD. I need a receiver.
Starting point is 00:21:18 He the last one left. Oh, no, my bad. No. Yeah, because Jalen Regal went before City. Yeah, Regal went to Philly, right? Philly, yes. So, Ocho, that ain't nothing. If a guy just fall in your lap, no, if you want to impress me,
Starting point is 00:21:37 do what Kansas City did. Zoom up the draft board and go get somebody. That's what's impressive. That lets me know okay, they know what they're doing. You didn't do that. So,
Starting point is 00:21:53 I just don't get it. Mingo has 17 catches for 167 yards all year. He had five catches for 64 yards when he arrived in Dallas, and he played eight games. Played nine for Carolina. And they traded a fourth-round pick for him, right?
Starting point is 00:22:14 Fourth or fifth. Traded a fourth-round pick for that kind of production. He doesn't know what he's doing, Al. He may feel he does. Yes. But there's no way he does. It's not. You know, it's almost – it's almost like –
Starting point is 00:22:30 Hold on. Let's see. Hold on, Ocho. Did Justin Jefferson go before or after CD? He went to pick after? Yeah, he went 22nd. So you saw you went CD and Justin Jefferson went 22nd. Check the numbers out. Right.
Starting point is 00:23:01 Look at the numbers between the two. But he know football. Check the numbers out. Right. Look at the numbers between the two. But he know football. Not that CD is a bad, because CD is a number one receiver. Oh, yeah, absolutely. But I don't know very many people that's taking CD over Jenna. I mean, listen. Maybe Cowboy fans, but I'm talking about if you poll GMs, you poll all 32 GMs and says, okay, you got Jeddah or you got CeeDee.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Because right now, people are going to take Chase and Jeddah. They want to. Both of those guys were unanimous first-team All-Pros. There weren't a whole lot of unanimous first-team All-Pros, but those two guys were two of them. And Jeddah damn near been an All-Pro every year, except what last year, he got nicked. He went over 1,000 on choice, missed like seven games.
Starting point is 00:23:50 Can you imagine what his numbers would have been? Ain't nobody close to him. His first three years, his first four years, his first five years. Nobody is close to those numbers. Now, with the season that Chase had, Chase might have an opportunity to get him, but he's going to probably need another 11,400, $1,500, which is possible with his quarterback and that system. But Jerry don't know what he's doing, man.
Starting point is 00:24:14 And like I said, I don't got no problem with Brian Schottenheimer. I'm just saying this notion that he's scouring and he's trying to get the best man for the job, I don't believe he's doing that. I don't believe he's scouring and he's trying to get the best man for the job. I don't believe he's doing that. I don't believe he's ever done that. He's not going to get a Cowboy fan. Jerry is not going to get anybody that's going to offer him some resistance. Brian, let me tell you what Brian Schottenheimer doesn't have. Any say on the final 53.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Any say in free agency. Any say in the draft. And all those are things that a head coach should have some type of say or control over. Just basically almost like, I guess what, if they still have arranged marriages.
Starting point is 00:24:56 Hold on, I'm the one that got to be with this lady. I need to know. You try to tell me what I want. I know what I want. Jerry, this is a range marriage.
Starting point is 00:25:06 Jerry is telling you. He's picking players, telling you what you need as opposed to what you want or what would fit best to the system. Now, is them coming back? I mean, as far as I know, see, that's another thing. What if Brian Schottenheimer were to hire his own DC? No, that's crazy. I mean, listen, it's crazy the way things are run.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Obviously, Jerry has the power. We understand that. He's going to exercise that right and that power at every turn and every chance he gets. Every chance and every turn he gets. Every chance and every turn Terry gets. He's killing his own franchise. He's killing his own team. This series explores Ali's life and legacy through never-before-heard audio recordings
Starting point is 00:29:25 and discussions with those who knew him best. Muhammad had this real sense of his own personal values and principles, things he believed in, his own sense of conviction. Those convictions never wavered. Hosted by Muhammad's wife, Lani Ali, and his close friend, award-winning broadcaster, John Ramsey, Ali and Me goes beyond the boxing ring to delve deeply into Ali's extraordinary life through conversations with Billy Crystal, Mike Tyson,
Starting point is 00:29:56 Rosie Perez, Common, Will Smith, and Bob Costas. It created a North Star for me of how I want to be in the world, you know. As a child, as a young person, he gave credence to my audacity. There's no debate that this is the greatest global sports figure of our lifetime. Listen to Ali and Me, now on Audible. Pete Carroll was hired as head coach of the Raiders. Pete Carroll and the Raiders have reached an agreement on a three-year deal with a team option for a fourth.
Starting point is 00:30:34 When the regular season starts, Carroll will become the oldest person to ever serve as head coach in the NFL. He turns 74 in September. The previous record was held by Romeo Cornell, who was 73 when he served as interim head coach of the Houston Texans. Ocho, do you like this move? It's
Starting point is 00:30:53 Pete Carroll. I like Pete Carroll. Pete's resume, you know, it speaks for itself, what he's done. He's a Super Bowl winning head coach. Again, when I look at what he has to work with over in Las Vegas, I'm not at what he has to work with over in Las Vegas, I'm not sure why he would want to. Maybe he
Starting point is 00:31:09 knows something we don't know. Maybe he knows something, you know, he has something cooking. He's one of 32. What you talking about Woody Wolf? A, with 32 of those jobs? I know, but still, I mean, just going to take a job knowing that your lease is going to be short, knowing that you don't have the most important position on your team,
Starting point is 00:31:28 on that team, that matters to be able to compete and contend. And that, do you know what conference division he's in? Yes. AFC West. AFC West. Broncos, Chargers. Chargers, yeah. All of them got quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:31:43 Everybody got quarterbacks for the next decade. Yeah. All of them got quarterbacks. Everybody got quarterbacks for the next decade. Exactly. So I'm not sure that he got to be thinking about something. He must be cooking up something with Mark Davis. I don't know. Ocho, let me ask you this. In chat, y'all can help me. You'll understand.
Starting point is 00:31:59 You're 70 years old. This 32-year-old thing, she's nice, got long hair. She got, ooh, skin. Ooh. Yeah. Stacked like dirty laundry in a doornail. old this 32 year old thing she's nice got long hair she got old skin whoo yeah built stacked like dirty laundry in the door now here down the back and when she steps you up y'all don't talk about she'll step up y'all go see if she gonna have a YSL she'll have on time for she'll have on the blood bottles everything is everything is immaculate and she's interested in you you're taking that Pete Carroll's about to be 74
Starting point is 00:32:29 how many jobs do you think he's going to get in the NFL at the age of 74 I like where you're going with it when you put it like that, when you give me that kind of analogy I like where you're going with it but everything you just said you know, you talk about Tom Ford you know
Starting point is 00:32:44 the nice shoes and she's a stepper Everything you just said, you know, you talk about Tom Ford, you know. Yes. You know, the nice shoes and she's a stepper. Well, everything you just described in that woman ain't the goddamn Las Vegas Raiders. It don't go together. You know, now the Las Vegas Raiders is the one where your homeboy say, hey, boy, I ain't sharp. I need someone to take me for the team tonight, man. Oh, no. The one I got, you know, I ain't sharp. I need someone to take me for the team tonight, man. Oh, no. The one I got, you know, she's a 10.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Now, her friend, she said she had to bring her friend with her. Now, her friend is only a six. But you quit it. You're going to take one for the team. Now, the back, the Las Vegas Raiders. What you guys are playing is like getting ready to be the head coach for the Chiefs
Starting point is 00:33:24 or something. But you have to understand, though, Ocho, she's so interesting. She ain't got to have on nothing. She might come out the house with Crocs. She might come out the house with that bonnet on. But she's 32. Yeah, Curry. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:44 Let me get my visuals together now. How tall are we talking? How tall are we talking? She's somewhere between 5'7 and 5'9. Woo. Mm. Mm-hmm. I'm going to do you one better.
Starting point is 00:33:58 I'm going to do you one better because we both tall. Let's just make a 5'5, 5'9, 5'10. Woo. So when she put some heels on, we call her Amazon. We both talk, let's just make a 5-5, 5-9, 5-10. So when she put some heels on, we call her Amazon. 32, got a nice job, she make six figures, low six figures. When you see her out, she ain't got nothing on her. She carrying Louis all the time. She got her own, got her own crib, got her own car. Yeah, you got to be careful now because everything you described right now as a woman she talked back That's okay
Starting point is 00:34:34 She talked I listen hey, why don't you talk about oh Joe? Hey, I'm about to be 50 film man I ain't fit you all that I'll pass that stage. Oh Joe. Well, I got where to pass, and it's got to be my way. Oh, no. Mm-mm. Mm-mm. She talked back, you know what? You right. I didn't want to go over there. Why didn't you tell me this yesterday?
Starting point is 00:34:57 I like it. I like it. Listen, I understand where you're at. Listen, you're in a different phase in your life. You have to understand. You don't have to fight everybody it's not like he's Ben Johnson see yeah Tom Brady wanted Ben Johnson Ben Johnson ain't got no quarterback yeah ideally would I like
Starting point is 00:35:14 to be in the same division no but I got a quarterback over here I got skill position players over here I got a lot of cap space and I can build guess what I got a quarterback on a rookie contract, so I can put some pieces around him. You got a little time.
Starting point is 00:35:30 You got about two more years. Got two more years? Yes. So with that being said, Ocho, but Pete being about to be 74, think about it. In the history of the game, there's only one other coach. Romeo was 73 and he was interim. Wasn't head. He wasn't, you know, that wasn't somebody hired him and gave him the job. He just took over.
Starting point is 00:35:52 So for me, for Pete, it's a no brainer. Now Pete can build a team. We saw what he did with Seattle, but Russ came to him in the third round. I think Russ was a third round draft pick. And we saw what happened. They had a great defense. They built that thing. They had B-Wag. They had Sherm. They had Chancellor.
Starting point is 00:36:10 They had Earl. They had Malcolm Smith. They had Bennett. They had Cliff Averill. They had Red. They had a squad. Russ come in. Remember now they assigned Matt Flynn in free agency from Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:36:24 He was expected. They gave him $10 million guaranteed out of $30 million contract, $10 million signing bonus, and he never touched the field. Russ beat him out in camp. Crazy how that worked. Hey, and maybe he can strike light. But see, the thing is, Ocho, he understands. He's been a head coach at a lot of different stops.
Starting point is 00:36:45 He's head coach at the Jets. He's head coach at the Patriots. Head coach at Seattle. Head coach here. Head coach at USC. And if you look at what he did, USC was not winning before Pete got there. He put USC back on the map. Now, you're not old enough to remember when USC had that juggernaut late 60s
Starting point is 00:37:03 and through the 70s. They were hell. They were hell. They were loaded. Yes, yes, yes, yes. I mean, you got to think about it. They had Charles White and Marcus Allen. Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith, Joey Brown, Ross, all those guys. So they were – Lynn Kane, all those guys. So they were
Starting point is 00:37:26 really, Len Cain, all those guys within that backfield, they were really good. Munoz. Yeah. I think Don Mosbar was on that team. They were loaded. But Pete knows how to build a team. But at the end of the day, if you look
Starting point is 00:37:42 at the teams, when he's had his best, most success, he's had his best most success it matters and without him so russ and p a russ p reunite in oakland i mean uh in vegas even russ russell wilson that's a good one that's a good that's a good one. That's a good one. I like what you're thinking. That's a possibility.
Starting point is 00:38:11 I'm not sure. I am not sure. Damn, that's a good one. A quarterback that you're familiar with, a quarterback that you won a Super Bowl with, you know, but there were some issues internally. Are you sure you want to go back to that?
Starting point is 00:38:29 Nah, bro. Pete was like, I see diminishing skills. Nah, bro. I ain't really trying to give you 200 plus. Russ, hey, bro. Hey. And, you know.
Starting point is 00:38:48 Hey, spend the block. Yeah. You know, sometimes the thing be so bad on you, you ain't got a choice, but spin the block. Yeah. I don't, that ain't what I said. Right. But sometimes that's what you have to do. Hey, you know, hey, half your age plus I have a minus three so that's
Starting point is 00:39:11 why I come forward that's that you know yes sir I stay right here oh joy going out of it you know side to side side to side right here but I ain't going outside that box. Okay, maybe. Hey, depending on who it is, maybe. You know what I'm talking about. You know what I'm talking about, don't you? You know what I'm saying? Sometimes,
Starting point is 00:39:39 you know, hey, like, hey, your boy ain't 27, ain't 37 no more. It's hey. Like, hey. Your boy ain't 27, ain't 37 no more. It's different. It's different. Listen, you know what's good? You know what's good about us?
Starting point is 00:39:55 It's really understanding and realizing we're not the same. Yes. We're not the same as we were. As we were. No. We understand what we're capable of doing at our age now. The things we did in our teens and 20s and 30s, man, we not pulling that shit off
Starting point is 00:40:10 at this age. No, no, no. I ain't finna grab no 25-year-old like I could when I was 32, 33. I already know that. Right now, Ocho, I'm a when I can, not when I won't to. You see what I'm saying, Ocho? I'm a when I can, not when I won't to. Understand that, chat. Understand. Stay with me now. Stay with me. can not when i want to you see what i'm saying i'm when i can not what i want to understand that chat
Starting point is 00:40:25 understand stay with me now stay with me there's a different between the two you know what you you know what you got you got self-awareness awareness is so important but it's lacking in sony so many of our men today is lacking in so many of our you kind of thing you can keep up and do some of the things you did when you were no no i'm a hey i'm who i am about to be hey six months 57 now i don't look it i still i'm in shape you know i eat my veggies and do my abs but hey at the end of the day, they hit that Google. Damn, damn, 50-7, yeah, 50-7. Hey, Ocho, you know sometimes you have to catch a straggler coming out of the supermarket. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:41:16 I'm leading on the wall, Ocho. Listen. I'm leading on the wall. We don't want to come out. It's the ninth inning. It's the ninth inning. It's two strikes and three balls. What you going to do now?
Starting point is 00:41:28 Four and a quarter. Hey, two-minute drive. Hey, you sitting in your car for a little while. Why don't you go in and out? Okay. Oh, Joe, she look as desperate as I am. The Jacksonville Jaguars are finalizing a deal to hire Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Cohen as their next head coach. The move comes after Cohen agreed to an extension with the Buccaneers and removed himself from the consideration for the Jags job.
Starting point is 00:41:58 Cohen met with Jaguars on Thursday to discuss the vacancy despite the news of his return to Tampa, which would have made him the highest paid coordinator in NFL history. Jacksonville reportedly reached out to Cohen after the team fired Trent Baalke to see if he would reconsider the offer and after their talks,
Starting point is 00:42:17 it appears Jacksonville has their guy. I like it. I like it. And the fact that the fact that he chose to leave, even though the Bucs were going to make him the highest paid offensive coordinator, you know? They're going to make it by D. They're going to make more than we were going to make in the Jags.
Starting point is 00:42:33 How do you figure? He's going to make at least $7 million with the Jags. The highest paid coordinator will probably make him make $3 million. Remember, we just talked about Spagnuolo making $3.5 million. I know, that's what I'm just saying. But if they're telling him to leave. Remember, we just talked about Spagnola making 3.5. That's what I'm just saying. But if they're telling him to leave the job,
Starting point is 00:42:48 we want you to reconsider, I'm sure allow him to reset the market on whatever it is. No, they're going to ask him to reconsider. No, the Jags ask him to reconsider. So they're going to give him a head coaching job, which will probably be somewhere around $7 million. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers is only going to give him a head coaching job which would probably be somewhere around seven million the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was only going to give him three million three four million
Starting point is 00:43:10 dollars okay okay yeah no I'm just saying okay I had it backwards but I knew he was leaving right right yes yes you know nobody yes yes absolutely and and look and you're over everything you know you're responsible i mean the head coach comes with a lot of responsibilities you're not you're not responsible for one side of the ball you're responsible for the whole ball offense defense special teams when we're going to practice what time we're going to meet okay what's the uh uh what's the uh the training you know i'm saying as far as weight schedule okay injured players whatjured players. What time did it have to be there? How long the meeting gonna last?
Starting point is 00:43:48 What time are we going to leave Ochoa for road trips? Where are we going to stay? All that goes on the head coaches. So congratulations. I mean, I hate it for Baker because Baker had really, under his guidance, Baker had looked like the Baker that they took, the reason why they took him with the number one overall pick, I think, in 2016.
Starting point is 00:44:15 The last two years, he showed you why. And a lot of that had to do, I believe, had to do with Liam Cohen. Not to say Baker doesn't have talent because, obviously, you go first overall. You've got talent. But I think he had found someone that believed in him, that had an offense that was really catered
Starting point is 00:44:30 to what he does really well. He had nice quality receivers outside with Mike Evans, even though Chris Godwin got hurt this year. The young guys had come along. I love the running backs that they got. But I hate this. I hate this for Baker.
Starting point is 00:44:44 But I'm excited for someone to get an opportunity to be a head coach because, hey, last two years, he's done a great job as an OC for Tampa and he's getting rewarded
Starting point is 00:44:52 for his hard work. Oh, yeah. That's dope. So, what do you think, Ocho? You like the move? Oh, yeah. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:45:02 Absolutely. Listen, if he can do, if he can do, if he can do what he did for Baker, imagine what he would do for Trevor Lawrence. Baker Mayfield had Mike Evans. Now, young bull is a stud over there in Jacksonville now. Chat, I don't know if y'all paid attention to Brian Thomas Jr., but there's a reason he's in the Pro Bowl.
Starting point is 00:45:23 There's a reason he's in the Pro Bowl. There's a reason he's in the Pro Bowl. So that magic he had in Tampa with Baker and Mike Evans has always been Mike Evans, but I'm sure he can create that same magic between Trevor Lawrence and get him turned around after getting that huge payday. And Brian Thomas Jr., that was your security blanket right there.
Starting point is 00:45:42 That was your security blanket right there. Travis Smith, that was your security blanket right there. They got your security blanket right there. Travis, they got your security blanket right there. Take Bigsby. I think you probably need to do a little bit more with the offensive line. Sure, that up. I think they got a pretty good defense. Maybe look at a corner,
Starting point is 00:45:56 look at a, look, you got a high draft pick. You got a quarterback. You don't need a quarterback. I wouldn't spend a high draft pick on a wide receiver. I wouldn't spend a high draft pick on a tight end. I wouldn't spend a high draft pick on a tight end. I don't know if there's anyone that's worthy to be selected.
Starting point is 00:46:11 Is there an offensive lineman that's worthy of a pick that high? Probably not. Maybe a defensive lineman, maybe a DB. But, yeah, you got Trevor Lawrence, you got Brian Thomas Jr., you got Evan Ingram, You got Tank Bigsby. You got Trevor ATN. I mean, ATN. So you got some nice quality pieces,
Starting point is 00:46:33 but you're going to have to protect Trev, and he's going to have to do a job of protecting himself. They have the number one pick, right? No. Tennessee has the number one pick. Oh, shoot. Okay, that means Shador. The Shador is going first then.
Starting point is 00:46:46 Jacksonville's at five. So, let me see. It's Shador probably go first to Tennessee. The second would be... I think Cleveland's at two. Then Cam Ward would probably go two. And who are in New England is three, right? No?
Starting point is 00:47:13 Giants are three. New England's four. Jacksonville's five. That might be a shocker right there, two at three. The question is, would Tennessee be moving to move down? Is there somebody that's in the draft that Tennessee says we must have and we don't believe he'll be available if we slide down to 3, 4, 5, 6, 7? That's the question, Ocho, because the question is,
Starting point is 00:47:42 are Tennessee one player away, O Ocho or do you need multiple? Okay, if I can slide down and get next year's first rounder maybe pick up a second or third this year and a second and third next year and in 27 maybe get a fourth. I think that's the best option because
Starting point is 00:48:01 I don't think any of these teams are one player away. Now obviously everybody's not going to slide down. But if I can slide down, Mocho, and really, really, really build, I think I'd be willing to do that. I don't see anyone sliding down, especially with the players that we have going that are slotted in the mountain drafts to go top five. I don't see any team coming out coming out of those. No,
Starting point is 00:48:28 I should mock draft. Oh, Joe should do a Sanders one Tennessee Abdul Carter the edge Russia out of Penn State to Cam Ward quarterback out of Miami three Travis Hunter the all-purpose all do it all
Starting point is 00:48:44 wide receiver cornerback. New England, Mason Graham, D-line, Michigan. Will Johnson, cornerback, Michigan. Will Campbell, offensive lineman, OT, Jets. Now, this is just a mock. Obviously, clearly, Tennessee needs a court. Now, you know, listening to them talk today,
Starting point is 00:49:07 it's like, hey, we're willing to bring Will Evans back, but kind of informed him that there's going to be competition. We know what that means. And maybe that would be a good thing for Will.
Starting point is 00:49:19 Maybe that would be a good thing. Having someone to help, to force you to compete at a high level, you know, to force you to minimize your mistakes because,
Starting point is 00:49:30 you know, when you got somebody looking over your shoulder, they can do two things. They can either make you or they can break you. That's a lot, that's a lot of,
Starting point is 00:49:38 that's a lot of pressure when you know you can't make no mistakes when you're trying to play mistake-free football and you start depressed. You start depressed. I mean, listen, that ain't a good thing. It depends on how he's built mentally.
Starting point is 00:49:51 I agree. I think the thing is, Ocho, is that AP did a disservice to the Raiders by winning that game because they slid down from one all the way to six. So there's a possibility that you could lose out on Cam Ward
Starting point is 00:50:06 and Shador. Well, listen. Listen, in the world room, you never know what's going to happen. You never know what goes on. They have those phones in there for a reason. So maybe something may happen, you know, before the draft
Starting point is 00:50:18 or during the draft and maybe somebody comes up and snatches the player that they want on their board to make sure he doesn't get away. Well, they really don't have a whole lot of draft, uh,
Starting point is 00:50:33 tradable pieces. The one piece they got is Crosby. Max, Max Crosby. That's the one, that's the one piece that everybody would be willing to give up a first round pick or multiple picks
Starting point is 00:50:49 for I don't see anybody else on that roster that they would be willing to give that up for Brock Bowers but they're not trading Brock Bowers but Max Crosby is the only one that I see that has the
Starting point is 00:51:08 that has the capital attached to him that somebody would be willing to give up he's the most valuable he and Brock Bowers are the most valuable pieces well clearly they're not trading Brock Bowers but I don't think the Raiders are one player away
Starting point is 00:51:24 but but I don't think the Raiders are one player away but they need damn quarterback that's what they need they absolutely need a quarterback fix that situation and then you build you build a route Made for This Mountain is a podcast that exists to empower listeners to

In the fall of 1986, Ronald Reagan found himself at the center of a massive scandal that looked like it might bring down his presidency. Did you make a mistake in sending arms to Tehran, sir? No.
Starting point is 00:54:04 It became known as the Iran-Contra affair. And I'm not taking any more questions in just a second. I'm going to ask Attorney General... I'm Leon Nafok, co-creator of Slow Burn. Muhammad Ali was never afraid to express himself loudly and boldly and stays true to form in Ali and Me, an eight-part Audible original. Guided by his own words, this series explores Ali's life and legacy through never-before-heard audio recordings and discussions with those who knew him best. Muhammad had this real sense of his own personal values and principles, things he believed in, his own sense of conviction. Those convictions never wavered. Hosted by Muhammad's wife, Lani Ali,
Starting point is 00:55:29 and his close friend, award-winning broadcaster, John Ramsey, Ali and Me goes beyond the boxing ring to delve deeply into Ali's extraordinary life through conversations with Billy Crystal, Mike Tyson, Rosie Perez, Common, Will Smith, and Bob Costas. It created a North Star for me of how I want to be in the world, you know. As a child, as a young person, he gave credence to my audacity. There's no debate that this is the greatest global sports figure of our lifetime.
Starting point is 00:56:02 Listen to Ali and me now on audible. Mark Andrews publicly apologized for dropping the ball on what would have been a game time two point conversion. It is impossible to adequately express how I feel. I'm absolutely gutted by what happened on Sunday. I'm devastated for my teammates, my coaches, and Ravens fans. I pour every ounce of my being into playing at the highest level possible because I love my team and I love the game of football like nothing else. That is why it's taken me until now to collect my thoughts and address this publicly.
Starting point is 00:56:40 Even though the shock and disappointment are unlike anything I've felt before, I refuse to let this situation define me. I promise that this adverse adversity will only make me stronger and fuel us as we move forward. I thank everyone that has shown me and our team genuine support these past several days. I've seen heartfelt love and encouragement, including from those who have generously donated to the breakthrough, uh, TD, uh, T one D organization.
Starting point is 00:57:10 Even when the moments seem darkest perspective can reveal that there is still a lot of light in this world. I'm now going to do my part to bounce back and contribute to it. Hashtag. God bless. Oh, Joe, was this necessary? Uh no not at all not at all
Starting point is 00:57:32 there's nothing you can do there's no point of you know writing writing an apology um there are ups and downs there are obstacles there are hurdles in a game you don't owe anybody on the outside of that locker room an apology. You talk to your players. You talk to your teammates. You talk to your coaches. You know, and you let them know how you feel. There's no need to be apologizing publicly to everyone that hasn't put in the work you've done.
Starting point is 00:57:59 They're not there in training camp with you. They're not there at meetings with you. No. They're not bleeding with you. They're not going to war out there with you. Now, they do support you because they are fans of the team. Any apologies should be had within that team
Starting point is 00:58:15 to individual players and nobody else if that's what you see fit in doing. But that's the birth of brotherhood. Yes. You know, they're not going to be talking trash about you and oh man you just
Starting point is 00:58:29 it happens Ocho I mean I remember Ernest Biner and EB I know EB I mean knew EB a long time he was in Baltimore when I was there stayed in contact with him he fumbled the ball he was running into the end zone Ocho he had a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:58:46 They would have put the Browns in front of the Broncos and got pulled it out. It happens. Yeah. It happens. Look at Billy Buckner. The ball went right through his legs. Magic Johnson had a situation.
Starting point is 00:59:01 They used to call, they called him tragic. He had a chance to win the game. Right. He drew the timeout. They used to call, they called him tragic. He had a chance to win the game. Right. He drove the timeout. They lost in overtime. He was a two-time
Starting point is 00:59:11 finals MVP. Right. So, fans are going to turn, look, I don't care what you've done. Yeah. They'll turn on you quick now.
Starting point is 00:59:23 They'll turn on you quick. Their loyalty is not with you. Their loyalty is not with you. Their loyalty is there with you simply because you're a part of it. You're on their team they root for. Yeah, that's it. That is it. I just think the thing is he'd have come out much better. Just, hey, I'm devastated, guys.
Starting point is 00:59:41 We had an opportunity to tie this game up. I like our chances from that point on. But Ocho, you can't run. You can't run. You don't have to say anything. It ain't about running. No, Ocho, you got to speak after the media. Let me ask you a question.
Starting point is 00:59:58 Had he called it and they won, do you think Mark Andrews would have spoken? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Why? You said he don't have to speak. Oh, I mean, no, I'm saying write that written letter. That's not necessary. You got Ocho. This is why I'm a firm believer.
Starting point is 01:00:17 You have to be able to handle adversity the same way you handle prosperity, success. Yeah, I didn't realize he didn't speak to the media. He didn't speak after the game, and he didn't speak on the exit interview. But the whole letter thing, that's like... Yeah, I didn't write no letter. I ain't gonna point for all that,
Starting point is 01:00:36 man. I might write that thing to my boo thing. He had a great season. Mark Anthony dropped four passes this season. He dropped four passes all year, huh? He dropped four passes all year long. It just so happened they came at the wrong time. Two of them.
Starting point is 01:00:51 The fumble came at the wrong time. Yes. It happens though, Ocho. I think after that first drop, you know, everything else was in his head after that. But here's the thing. Even on the first drop they went down and got a touchdown so we can't hold that against him they scored on that
Starting point is 01:01:08 if look it's at the end of the game this is what everybody remembers the fumble uh buffalo went down and got points out of that uh the the two-point conversion you know they weren't they weren't able to get the onside right Now, there was a minute and 33 seconds with two timeouts. Now you're going to have to ask your defense. We'll never know. Maybe the defense gets a turnover and they win the game. Maybe A, they go down and
Starting point is 01:01:36 Buffalo kick a field goal and they win the game. 30 to 27. We'll never know. But you have to be able to handle, you have to be able to handle adversity the same way you handle success. Because it's not what happens to you
Starting point is 01:01:50 that determines what, what do you do? Once that happens to you. And I believe Mark Andrews is made of the right stuff. You don't have the success that he's had in this league. He's been an all pro.
Starting point is 01:02:02 He's been a pro bowl player. He's been Lamar Jackson's most reliable weapon since he's had in this league. He's been an all-pro. He's been a Pro Bowl player. He's been Lamar Jackson's most reliable weapon since he's been in Baltimore. We can't, we, there's no denying that. And Zay Flowers had an unbelievable season.
Starting point is 01:02:15 But since Lamar's been there and Mark Andrews has been there, Mark Andrews has been his most reliable weapon. And I can imagine. Ocho, I've been there. I dropped the pass that would have given the Broncos home field throughout the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:02:32 I just say, if I'm ever in that situation again, ain't happening. Well, five years, six years later, I'm in that situation. Third and eight. In the situation in Baltimore. Third and eight. In the situation in Baltimore, third and
Starting point is 01:02:47 18. Mark, I promise you, you come back and make a play next year to win a game, win a playoff game, just keep your head up, bro. You're strong. You're a great player. You're going to be up
Starting point is 01:03:04 there with all the other greats with the Ray Lewis's and the Suggs and the Ed Reed and the Peter Boulware's and the Mike McQuarrie's the Jonathan Ogden's you're going to be up there
Starting point is 01:03:13 you're going to be alright you're going to be up there yep you're going to be okay so pick your head up I know it's hurting I know it hurts bro
Starting point is 01:03:20 I know it hurts because of the finality of it man what could have been you're so close I know it hurts, bro. I know it hurts because of the finality of it. Man, what could have been? You're so close. But, bro, you'll be okay. I promise you, you're going to be okay.
Starting point is 01:03:33 And it's tough. You know, all your teammates say, oh, Joe, they tried to tell you the right thing, man. You know, man, hey, man, it ain't your fault. We win together, we lose together. But see, you're like, no, bro, no, that difference on you. That's what I hate. But see, not really. This was on you. But see, that was different with us because I remember
Starting point is 01:03:49 we lost to the Jazz Hocho in 98. We were 13 and 3. Played on a Saturday. And we take the lead. We weren't playing well. TD was really sick, but TD gave us an outstanding effort. I think TD might have had 150 yards. TD was sensational. Man, they go gave us an outstanding effort. I think TD might have had 150 yards. TD was sensational.
Starting point is 01:04:06 Man, they go 87 yards in three plays. Man, we get on the bus. You know, everybody head down. I walk by the dude that gave that touchdown. Like, you cost us just undefeated season. Damn. Damn, huh?
Starting point is 01:04:24 Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. We would like that hotel yeah for sure yeah lee yeah oh tim mckay i said oh yeah you like to call stuff you like hey you like to fill out like you did in pittsburgh no oh no oh but we had but oh joe we had that type of relationship with the guys oh we had no problem you drop a pass or of relationship with the guys oh we had no problem you drop a pass or you gave up something oh yeah you had no
Starting point is 01:04:49 oh yeah you gonna hear about it yeah they on you oh yeah oh yeah for sure for sure but you're hey
Starting point is 01:04:57 me and Burns that was oh we gonna keep you humble oh oh especially Ocho you know i'm saying you gave
Starting point is 01:05:06 up plays in the game but come practice you deal right you all work do that in the game oh you got me you got me locked up you up there talking you doing this all in my face why did you do that on sunday oh yeah Ocho yeah hey we can't we can't let you get too high we gotta keep you right here we gotta keep you right here we keep you right here Ocho
Starting point is 01:05:33 we know we can have you you start feeling good about yourself and all of a sudden you start bull jiving no we gotta keep you level and so yeah I wouldn't have written no letter. Me personally, Ocho, that's him. That's how he handled it. I would have been mad
Starting point is 01:05:51 enough to stand up there in front of the... I let my team down today, guys. I did. If somebody would have told me I was going to have an opportunity to atone for the fumble. Right.
Starting point is 01:06:07 By catching a two-point conversion and giving our team an opportunity to potentially take this thing to overtime. No chance. That's all I could ask for. All you want is an opportunity to be in that situation. Because a lot of times, Ocho, you don't even get an opportunity to be in that situation to catch a game of times, Ocho, you don't even get an opportunity to be in that situation to catch a game-changing play
Starting point is 01:06:27 or a game-winning play. Moments like that come around every so often. Every so often. It don't happen all the time. Now, fortunately enough, because of the team he's playing for, they're going to always be in contention.
Starting point is 01:06:44 And he's going to always be making plays for Lamar Jackson. Yes. So he's going to be all right. He's going to be all right. Victory goes to the man that's prepared.
