They say, hey, when he come up, everybody all of a sudden, they can't find his shoes. He has an album coming out, Karma, Four, that will be released actually on my daughter's birthday. 10, 15, 25. Here he is, Dave East.

Dave, what to do, bro? What up, my boy? I'm good, man. I'm good. We got Ocho. Ocho. Ocho, what up? Nothing, chilling, man. Chilling, man. What's good? Everything good? Yeah, everything healthy, bro. I'm looking at the karma four features. Collaborations with Nipsey Hustle with Kalifa. You got Larry June, Keeglock, Mazi, Jeremiah, Jaquiz, Mano.

Tell us a little bit about the album. What makes this album so special for you? It's my first official independent joint. I mean, I've been signed since I came in the game like 2015, I was signed with Nause early on. I went on the deaf jam. So it feel good to, you know, put it all together myself. And the last call my drop was 2020, so I've been five years since I did that, touched into that series.

So it feel good. Yeah. When it comes to make an album, especially when you have collaboration like you do, how difficult is it to have everybody on the same page? You know, hey, listen, I need a verse. I need to do this. sing you the beat, how difficult is to complete an album

of this magnitude when we have collapsed like that? Oh, yeah, it's, yeah, no, it take a while, you know what I mean? Because everybody got different schedules, everybody running around doing whatever they're doing. So I would say the hardest part is just the time. You know what I mean? Like I had, I had, it was a few features I had that got right at the end, you know what I'm saying?

Like right before I turned there, I like, thank you, bro. Like, you know what I'm saying? I would say overall, everybody that I worked with on this album, I got a personal relationship with. So nothing was forced. You know what I mean? It was all natural. Everybody got back to me when they could.

It was love. And that's always nice to have a personal relationship because is it like when you will a big studio, they reach out and do a lot of this for you. And because like, okay, hey, such and such, you know, Sony, Epic or who have capital records or whatever the case may be. But now because you say, I got a person relationship.

Hey, you just pick up the phone and hit them your damn cell. That's a fact. That's a 100% fact. I ain't got to, no middleman with that. The artwork for Karma for is an homage to Tupac's iconic Vagma magazine cover shoot, which recently celebrated a 30th anniversary.

Who is something like, obviously, when you do this like the Tupac thing, so obviously Tupac was a big inspiration for you. But who's some of the other inspirations? Who are some of the rappers? You're like, okay, I kind of like their style. I kind of liked their beat. Growing up, I was a big, big punt fan.

Okay. I was, of course, Nas Hove. DMX really probably made me feel like I wanted to, like, write my own rap. I would get at the DMX. God bless his soul. It was a lot back then for me, like, just coming up. I never was really in a box.

I listened to Snoop, Dog Pam. I listened to Outcast in Atlanta. I listened to basically everything that was coming out of New York, Rough Riders, all of that. Dipset. I got an ear for a lot, you know what I mean? So I think me growing up and paying attention to all of them different styles, it gave me my style, like musically, you know what I mean?

The cover, was that your idea or was that, well, you're independent now, so it had to be your ideal. It wasn't like it was a record company's idea. You know what? That was my, so my cousin, Chet, he's a die hard. Like, I love Pock. I got Pock tatted on me.

But he's a die hard, die hard. Like, he knows every lyric. He knows all the unreleased shit that nobody never heard. Like, he's a Pock fan, you feel me? So one day we in the studio chopping it up, and he said, yo, I got a record on the album called Crazy. He was like, yo, for that video, I'm going to put on the shit. And he kind of looked like Pock.

He got the ball. He reminds me of Pock, my cousin. But he's like, yo, I'm going to do the straight jacket in the video, you know what I'm saying? And we're going to recreate the park. I'm like, nah, I'm going to put the straight jacket all. So I basically kind of took his idea. You took his idea. You know what I mean?

But I remember that vibe, that issue when Pac was on that cover. Me and Pac got a lot of similarities, I believe, just and just beyond just the music to the acting, the Gemini, I just got a lot of connections to Tupac. And I felt like with me being independent now and a lot of things I've been through is it's enough to drive you to the edge. You know what I'm saying? And I think I balance it well.

So I really wanted to pay how much to Tupac with the cover. That basically was the gist of that, you know what I mean? Hey, when it comes... Go ahead, Ocho. Wait, now, I'm going to say, when it comes to the era of music that we're in now, the sound, the way people rap, obviously when you think about New York rappers,

you think about lyricists. Actually being able to understand what everybody is saying, you have an ear for the game, you've been in the game for a very long time. Right. Is it easy to stay true to being a lyricist, being that you from New York,

or wanting to adjust to the sound of how music is right now or the time that we're in? It changes every 10 years. Right. I think in any lane you got to you got to be able to you know

add whatever's going on to what you got going on that's the word I was looking for you got to be able to adapt because I think if you don't adapt then your sound becomes dated your sound becomes the old you know what I mean? Nobody wants to be the old so I think with me

I got to do it my way I got to stick to what I know stick to what I love, but I'm always, my ears always to the streets to what's going on today. You know what I mean? So production-wise, what I'm talking about, the lingo, I'm up to date with all of that, what the kids is talking about.

You know what I mean? Like, so I'm going to always add that into the music and what I'm talking about on the songs, you know what I'm saying? So the kids that might be 10 to 15, 20 years younger than me, they can still be like, oh, I know what he's talking about. You know what I mean? Okay, okay. Dave, but the thing is it's really tough to adapt because you have a sound and people are used to that sound.

And a lot of times when people try to get out of that box, people like, man, I like the old Davies. I don't like this new Davey. And so you have to walk a tightrope of like giving the people the original, the OG Davies that they're used to hearing while trying to sprinkle some new flavor in because it is a fine line because you hear a lot of time. man, I like the old sound bell. All the time. All the time. But you know what I tell people to that, bro? I feel like with music, for me, I can only speak for myself.

With music is like, what am I going through at that time? Where is my life at that time? So a lot of that, a lot of times people like the music. When I was still living in the projects, I was broke. I was trying to figure it out. I ain't had no jewelry. I ain't had no cause. So I might have sound.

it like I was starving, like, you know what I'm saying? Like, I don't, when I go back and listen to it, it, I don't really hear too much a difference besides my voice, my tone of my voice. I got older. But I feel like with that, you can never, like, you can't have the same child twice. You know what I mean? Like, that's how I kind of treat it. Like, and each one of my bodies will work, it's like a kid.

Like, you know what I mean? Like, I put a certain amount of time into that project. I was emotionally going through this during this project. Like, you know what I mean? like, I can't recreate those feelings. I can't recreate people that might have died and was around me while I was making that music and the energy I was getting off for them

and now they're not around them, you know what I mean? So it's like, people don't know all that it takes to putting into the music, you know what I mean? So, yeah, I think it's just growth, bro. Like, and the people that really, really rock with me, they grow with me. You know what I mean? Like, as time go on, they grow with me.

You play college ball at the University of Richmond, transferred to Towson. Clearly, did you have hoop dreams? Or was you like, you know, were you rapping and hooping at the same time? I never thought I was going to be no rapper. I never, I never seen that. I thought the league, that's all my mom,

my pops, my grandma, that's, you know, by the time I made it to college playing ball, that's all I had been pushing up to that point. Like, my family was behind it. Um, yeah, that just went left, you know what I mean? But the talent was there. I was blessed with all of the height, everything. God gave me all the tools I needed to play basketball.

You know what I'm saying? It was just my mindset at 17, 18 years old. It wasn't what it needed to be. You weren't disciplined and structured. 100%. So who's your team? In what? In basketball.

In the NBA? Yeah. Man. Nick? Nick? I got to go. I got to go Nick's, man. You know what I mean?

I got to go big and wild, bro. I got to go Knicks. They let you there. They didn't let me there in a lot in my lifetime. You know, I've been here a little while. All your life, your entire lifetime. You're not some of your lifetime. Yeah, they've been, my pops to remember last time.

You know what I mean? And they got that joint. So, yeah. But I'm a, I'm a Nick fan, bro. I'm a Nick fan, bro. I'm at the games. I rep them, you know what I mean? I'm, I'm, I'm a ride with New York.

Because everybody, when we talk, when I talk, I've interviewed a lot of guys on Club Shayshay. We have guys here on Nightcap, and every name come up. I was talking to Snoop. I was talking to Snoop. I was talking to him. I was talking to everybody. Your name is the first name come up. So I guess you be taking these rappers money, Dave. Nah, you know what it is? I think, to be honest with you, bro, I think a lot of rappers,

and I don't know nobody, like, their background and their life and all that. But I think once they got on to whatever it is, they got on, got their money, it became like a pastime for them, like a hobby. You know what I mean? Like something they're doing their free time, now that they've made it. You know what I'm saying? Before I ever thought about rapping or making. a song, I was hoping.

I was hoping. I was hoping. You know what I'm saying? Like, really, really, you know what I mean? I was on that. Like, so I feel like that, and the fact that now they got footage out of me, somebody didn't put a clip together. So you can't swindle nobody now, huh? Nah.

I'm a rapper now, man. I do the rap thing now, man. I act a little bit here and then, but I fell in love with the music. Basketball broke my heart. Man, I gave basketball mad years. Yeah. It ain't go how I wanted it to go. So I had to hurry up and find something else. You know what I mean?

The kind of saved face. Like my mom was in there was like, I didn't know what you're going to do now? Like you blew that opportunity, what's you going to, I mean? So I'm thankful for this music, bro. I'm real thankful for it. Who's your football team? The G's, man, the Giants.

It's not the coaches. It's not the coaches. It's the owners. Hey, chat, stay with me real quick and understand this. The owners have to understand that when it comes to football, right? The owners are businessmen, huh? And the stuff that they do, the stuff that they're passionate and enthusiastic about, outside of football in the business world,

the one way to fix it is you throw money at it. You throw money at it, and that return on investment, it happens right away. When it comes to the game of football, this ain't a microwavable plate. You don't draft a quarterback, have a new coach, and put them out there on the field,

and think you all are going to have success right away. That's not the way it works. That's never been the way it works. Now, sometimes you get a quarterback, like you get a C.J. Shrown and you get lucky. You get a Jane Daniels and you get lucky. You get a franchise altering quarterback right away that changes the trajectory and speeds up the process of being a consistent team that can win. But listen, Brian Callahan getting fired, obviously, first year with Cam Ward. It's not the microwave.

It's ain't food. You can't just put in there and heat it up. something, you're going to have success. It just doesn't happen like that. It never has. They don't have patience, though, Joe. They're not letting anything develop. You know, I used to have a say, and I get my chickens by smashing the eggs, not by letting them hatch. There's a process in which an edge hatch into a chicklet. These, what these owners are doing, they're smashing the eggs. They're not,

they're not going to let it hatch. They fired the general manager. They fire Brable. They fry Rand Carthon. And guess what? Now they're fried Brian Callahan. what are they doing they don't know do they do my my point exactly so obviously they're not football people they're not they're businessmen they either have so joe she is amy adams okay i think her i think the last is pronounced skunk yeah okay strunk her father mr bud adams yeah okay i know who that is i know who that is i know who that He passed away and turned it over to her. I don't know how involved she was at the time.

Right. So you inherit this business, and if you haven't invested or spent a whole lot of time in it, you don't know a whole lot about it. You're trusting other people to run the business. Now, at least when Jerry passes away, hopefully that's not for another 100 years, his kids have been in the business from day one. So they're going to understand how this business work. So they have been a part of it since he purchased a team in 1989.

They've been a part of it. I don't know how involved she was with it. So and you're trusting other people. I don't know how involved they were with it. So it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's tough, oh Joe. it's tough and it's not like another business because, Ocho, if your business is not

doing well, you just don't sell it. You just don't scrap. Start buying the CEO, start finding the VP to C.O. You don't start finding a whole bunch of people. You give it time. Yeah, you have to. You don't have a choice. But those

that are in positions of power, I don't think they understand how the game of football works. You're drafting number one for a reason. Yeah, you're terrible. You drafted number one for a reason. That quarterback is going to have his ups and his downs. Yes. I mean, that's just the nature of the business. But these young quarterbacks go into dysfunctional franchises. If they were functional, he wouldn't be there. What the hell? There's a reason why you got an

opportunity to pick first. Right. You're bad. How would that be fair that Kansas City win the championship and then they get the first pick in the draft. The Eagles win the championship, win the Super Bowl. They get the first pick of the draft. We talked about this the other day is that the Lakers won the championship in 82 and guess what they got? They got to select James Worthy, number one overall. Okay.

How is that fair? Right. Damn. Yes, no. So normally the best, so normally the collegiate best player of what is deemed the best player goes to the worst situation because we want that guy to catch up. If we just put the worst, the best players on the best teams, they would stay bad. I just, they're not going to give it time, Ocho.

They're just not going to give it time because you're going to have to pay these quarterbacks, these quarterbacks going to be getting $3 million. Excuse me, $300 million. Yeah, absolutely. And so there's like. But this is the problem, this is the problem that scares me. If you only gave Callahan two years, right? Yeah.

You draft the Cam Ward. I'm not sure how much time, I'm not sure how much, how many years are on this rookie deal. Do you have the patience with him? Do you have the patience with him as well? So I don't know. Stuff like that scares me. It scares me, especially when you're fire coach that early, but knowing that you're drafting or you're picking in a position,

you're picking for a reason bringing another coach and still not having the players it's not going to change the goddamn thing um i i'm trying to thank a quarterback that didn't i mean hey baker mayfield wasn't uh uh uh freddy k fired doing bakers rookie year right so this is not this is not new this has been going on you go back the last You go back to the last decade plus and go back and look at them one overall picks and see their quarterbacks get fired during that first year. That's crazy. Because a lot of times he was there the year before and they get the working quarterback

and they get, you got to go. Mm-hmm. Yeah, okay, Hugh, Hugh Jack, okay. Okay. So see, it's, this is, this is not, this is not something new. Yeah. It's been going on. but I think now we started like, damn.

What do you expect from a team that let Derek Henry go? You didn't get anything for him, and you traded away A.J. Brown for Trillenbrook. And now he was in Denver, I think, today or last week working out. So do you think that of the team that is equipped? No. You let Derek Henry walk out the door, Scott Free. You traded A.J. Brown.

You the bet you got you had one of the better coaches Mike Brable yeah and you fired him damn who won't be the next coach well Mike McCoy is what was on the staff so he's taking over he was the head coach at uh the Chargers so he's the interim he was in he was the officer coordinator in Denver when the Denver went to that Super Bowl and they got the doors blown off him Um, uh, but he, uh, he's the set, he was at the, I think there was San Diego then in the end of moon. They went to the playoffs his first year, but then he ended up losing his job. So he, he's the interim, um, coach at this point in time.

I just don't think, I just don't think, uh, they have an idea. You trade your best player, the best coach you've had in a very, very long time. You fire him. gone through two, three general managers in a span of five years. That's not the continuity that you need in order to build a winning program. I just don't, I just don't, I don't know if they're going to get it right this time around either, don't you. Well, listen, listen, if they don't, if they don't get it right, we might as well put

our goddamn name in the hat and see we can come away with. Get us a little opportunity, you know, we can diversify our portfolio. No, I'm good. trading Joe Flacko to the Bengals Ocho let's take a listen to what Mike T had to say You know, to be honest, it was shocking to me. Andrew Barry must be a lot smarter than me or us because it doesn't make sense to me to trade a quarterback that you think enough of to make your opening day starter to a division opponent that's hurting in that area. But that's just my personal feelings. Look, Mike T. don't, that's not his style. Mike T don't normally involve in the A, he always say that's not us. That's not the Pittsburgh Steelers business. But why you think Mike T stepped out of character?

Well, listen, they asked him a question. He asked him a question. He gave him something different. He gave him something different. And obviously, even he has to always show face and be someone that he's truly not. You know what? I feel like being myself today.

I like that. One thing I told Young that I want coaches, I want players that obviously start doing, sometimes I want them to tell the truth. Sometimes they want him to say exactly how they feel. I want the locker room talk, the conversations that are had to be said in front of camera. Now, what he just said just there is something they would say if there were no cameras rolling. I enjoyed that.

That's authenticity. You know, that's- So you like what Tua saying. Who? Tua. No, I don't like that part. That's authenticity. No, no, no, I don't like that.

See, I'm, listen, I'm not throwing nobody under the bus. You said you wanted authenticity. You didn't, and you're not, you're not, you're not, listen to me. I don't like the snitching on people. I don't like that part. You won't, authenticity. You can get to pick and choose what's authentic. If it's authentic, you want it.

That's what you said, Chad. Is that what he's saying? Oh, that's snitching. Help me out, Chad. You're confusing. You don't, don't put authentic and snitching together. That's not, that's not together. I like, I like Mike Thomas's answer because there's something most coaches or most people

wouldn't say in front of the camera. So the fact that he did say it, and it was out of character for him as a head coach means it's authentic. That's how he really feels. So let me ask you question. What was who did is too was snitching and throwing people under the bus that he got to Were they late? Were they late?

Did they miss? Did he lie? I wouldn't know what to say is what he was said if the cameras weren't there. That's that's called snitching on cameras or not. You said you want people to be authentic. you want to be authentic sometimes you see you're going from you're going from one spectrum to the other so if we would talk about too i would say that snitching like i did yesterday but is that is he being truthful now we talk about mike tom he is he being truthful yeah yeah who two i don't know

we weren't there we don't know he's hold on you see how can it if if he can't be snitching then oh no we weren't there we weren't there so he ain't snitching No, he snitching. How do you know you weren't there? Exactly, because just the context and perspective of what I have to go off of you saying, what we should do. I didn't say nothing.

Let me say something. We should know anything about what's going on in that locker room. You shouldn't, as a quarterback. So we shouldn't know anything about what Mike Tom is thinking. Why not? Come on. Why not? How do you try to compare the two?

I'm just saying you say you won't authenticity. I do. You said you want people to tell the truth. He was telling the truth. He was telling what he experienced. Guys coming late, guys missing. You didn't like that because you said it snitching. But you said you just wanted people to tell the truth.

I want people to be themselves. That's what I'm saying. Wait a minute. Stay with me. Stay with me now. Now, I don't like the snitching part. You don't throw your teammates under the bus. As a captain, as a quarterback, you always take it.

and put them on yourself. I do. Now, Mike Tomlin is giving his perspective based on, you know, the Brown's letting Joe come to the bangles. There's nothing wrong with that. Sure.

Just give me his perspective of why they're losing. No, um, stop, stop trying. No. I just go about what you say. You say you want people to live in their truth. You say, oh, you say, oh, I just want people sometimes. I just want people to come up there. and tell what's on their mind.

That's what you told me. I said, Ocho, you can't do that. You say, why not? I said, because it's a bit of detriment to the team. You say, I don't care. I just want it to be true. I just want people to stay. You say, stay with me.

the reason why we're losing, the reason why we're losing is that when we have a meeting and we schedule a meeting are guys going to show up or are they going to show up on time when we say we're going to do this are we going to do it

I don't want people snitching.

There's a difference. No, it's not. You're confusing someone snitching and someone being authentic in their answer. based on the perspective of the question that they're asked. Those are two different scenarios. How about this here? Snitching only takes place in the street. The street of snitching.

When you partake in that activity, you're supposed to be a code. You and I do not partake in that. It ain't snitching. Whoa, there's also an NFL code. Anything inside that locker room should not be talked about in front of cameras or at home. So we should tell the truth all the time.

Huh? So we shouldn't tell the truth all the time. Yeah, you should. You just should a stench. Well, how can I? That's bad. Listen. Check, y'all see this man.

We got to live by a code. If we don't live by a code, what are we living for? So we got, so the locker room got the same code as the street. Yes. Yeah. What you mean? Yeah, it's the same. It's the same.

Oh, it's your man. You got to live by the street. the code. I'm just saying, yeah, you got to live by the code. And listen, it's an unwritten rule too. Somebody didn't even have to explain it. You just understand and know in that environment what you can and cannot do. As a quarterback in the NFL, as a coach in the NFL, there are things that you can and cannot do. Thank you. That's all I want to hear. We move on. Thank you. That's all I wanted you to say. Right, right. But then you have some people like myself, that choose to do the opposite.

Yes. That's all I wanted you to say, Ocho. I'm like, me this man talking about, hey, I'll go up there. Why can the quarterback just put people on blast? Why can't the quarterback? I say, Ocho, you're no good with the quarterback can't do that. When Cam Ward came out and said, I'm going to be on the chalk.

Man, we fucking ass. Like, that was refreshing. That was refreshing. I get tired of hearing that goddamn same. rhetoric, politically correct from the same goddamn script. It was refreshing that T, that Tua told us the truth. That guys be
