Starting point is 00:01:27 I'm Dr. Joy, and this is therapy for black girls. We've spent our surviving. middle school run getting into what's happening inside your kids' brain, the group chats, and their friendships, and what you can do about it. Your child is not doing this on purpose. That's the kind of perspective we've been pulling from the psychologists and psychiatrists who studied this for a living. Listen to therapy for black girls on the Iheart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Didn't catch the latest Roland Martin unfiltered podcast? Here's what you missed. People wake up and go, oh, damn, wait a moment, hold up. They change all of that. Yes.
Starting point is 00:02:01 It's real. This is a wholesale attack. It is targeting black people in every federal agency. It's raw. White folks have never allowed that reckoning to last more than a decade. Catch Roland Martin's daily commentary on the Black Information Network. And download Roland Martin unfiltered on the IHart radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcasts. What's on?
Starting point is 00:02:23 What's up? What's so, man? We got Richardson, Hitchens joining us, 21 and 0, 8-0. Made you wait. AGO. Oh, sorry about that. Richardson Hitchens made his well-to-weight debut. He's 21-0 with 8-0. How you feeling, bro?
Starting point is 00:02:37 Thank you for having me. Thank you. Go ahead, Ocho. Hey, listen. Last fight. How you felt? I felt good. I felt really good at 47. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:48 The seven extra pounds helped me out. Right. And no rehydration clause. It felt like another day in the gym. Right. As far as obviously going up in weight, dealing with different opponents at that weight, is there a difference with your power? Did your power carry over?
Starting point is 00:03:01 How did that feel? Yeah, I feel like my punches had more snap on it, sharper, crisper. I felt really good, honestly, my first fight at 147. And just the comfortability of, like, how I feel in the gym. Right. I was walking around maybe upwards of 168 to 170. That's a lot of the way to come down. And then I had an IBF rehydration clause, so I couldn't even game, like, more than 10 pounds to the day of the fight.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Wow. So, yeah. So my days was numbered. How is the speed? Because obviously when you move up, sometimes the speed dissipate as you move up and wait because you're a lot faster at 35, 40, and I hear you are at 47. How is the speed compared to that the lighter weight? I feel like the speed is the same because I was really a 47 pound of the whole time.
Starting point is 00:03:43 I was just sucking out of extra pounds to make 40. Yeah. Hey, do you think elite boxes have a responsibility to entertain or is getting a dub is the main thing? I feel like it depends the level you're on. Right. the level you're on because, um, I mean, I feel like if you're finding like a mega fight, if I was in there with somebody like a Devin Haney or like a, a big fight, a big name, I don't feel like the fans would, it wouldn't stay in my career if I didn't entertain the fans and, but
Starting point is 00:04:12 and I got the W. Absolutely. I see Floyd do it numerous nights. Oh, yeah. Right. Oh, yeah. Uh, you joined Zuffa boxing. What went to the decision to join Zuffa?
Starting point is 00:04:24 Um, to be honest, I spoke over with so many different promotional companies. when I became a free agent from Eddie. We re-spoke to Eddie, I sat down with Oscar Delahoya. Top ring. And all of money in me. But Zufa, they came with the best offer as far as money-wise, as far as, like,
Starting point is 00:04:41 seeing my vision. I feel like a lot of different promoters, they'll try to, like, they money not as big as Zufa, so they can't do a lot of cards in New York or these coaches. It costs to, like, those show in New York. With Zufa, they was, like,
Starting point is 00:04:55 down with making me a star while I'm at. I have me for. fighting Vegas, Orlando. Like, he's a New York fighter. He's an East Coast fighter. Let's build him here. And once I heard that in the meet, I'm like, yeah, I need a sign. Hey, now you look at the landscape of 147 right now.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Is there anybody that you have your eyes on the set that you'd like to fight next? I always wanted to Devon Haney fight. The Devon Haney or Tio Fimo or Ryan Garcia. The guys that was the stars at 140, they still are stars now. Right. And I feel like, yeah, T. female, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, those are the established names, and then
Starting point is 00:05:31 the names right under that would be like Roley, Keeshawn Davis, or Brian Norman. Why does this so difficult for us, for me, as a boxing fan, as a boxing enthusiast, why it's so difficult for you to be able to name the people that you want to fight, and it never really happens?
Starting point is 00:05:48 Is it that much politics that comes into play? Yeah, I don't know. I don't know what is it about boxing while a certain fights ain't happening. Like, even just now. talking about it. I don't know why nobody's talking about Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney too. That still didn't get settled. Nobody's
Starting point is 00:06:04 talking about that at all. But I feel like these fights don't get happen because I feel like just different things is always happening in the background. I just never know like what's going on. One minute you'll think Kishon Davidson, Devin Haney's fighting. Then that fight fall through then. Now I'm
Starting point is 00:06:19 in talks with Kishon. Yeah. So we don't know if that's going to go through. Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on. Whoa, hold on. Turbo. You're keeping the fight? Yeah, we're talking about making a fight. That's going to be a good one. That's a chess match.
Starting point is 00:06:32 Yeah, for sure. That's a good chess match. I like that. Yeah. Talk about this fight, Ryan Garcia-Connor being. Who you like? At first I was going with Connor because I had a bad taste in my mouth from when Ryan fought Roley.
Starting point is 00:06:46 I feel like the minute he got dropped by Roley, he was gunshot. Yeah. And what helped Roley get that W is Roley was extremely patient. Because if you look at Ryan, Ryan is a reactive type of fight. Yeah. Even when he caught Devin with the hook in the first round. It was Devin threw a jab like that, and boom, he reacted with a hook. I feel like with Ryan and Connor, I don't know if Carter's as patient as a roly.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Because he don't really got nothing else to like, while they, like, in the middle of the rain posing, he ain't going to flick a jab. He ain't going to hit Ryan with no sharp jab. So he's going to be looking for a big power shot. And that's when Ryan ain't going to be sharp and using his speed. Yeah. Catch you. He's looking to pick him up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:26 I got a question. I'm glad you said that. When I look at Ryan fight, I think Ryan relies on speed too much. Right. He relies on that one shot, that left hook. What happens when Connor Ben nullifies that one shot? He shows.
Starting point is 00:07:38 What happens if Connor Bryn is aggressive, comes in high guard, and he smother them, try to make him uncomfortable. Oh, no, yeah, it's ballgame. It's lit. Because we know Ryan can't fight. Ryan don't really get, don't really know how to fight in a, in, like,
Starting point is 00:07:53 engaging, yeah, engaging type of fight. He needs, like, some type of. a space to like his so when the dude is up in his his space you're in the pocket he's yeah he's back yeah he gave me his back so I don't know you're spoken about your friendship with Shakur how have you guys been able to support each other uh Shakur um as a professional he's he's obviously chicor been so helping support me since the amateur wow just with always giving me wisdom always being in the gym with me um putting me in position when I was younger, I remember that I have no money
Starting point is 00:08:27 and telling him I'm messed up right now. He putting me in a power rate commercial with him. So he always was able, he was always like helping me. Even as a professional, if I need sparring partners, he'd be like, yo, I'm going to get this kids to come to the gym. I'm going to take care of him. I'm going to take care of him. Right. I'm making sure you're ready for this fight. So he was always, he was always there to support
Starting point is 00:08:43 me as a professional. He's always been a good friend for me. How long have you been in the fight game? Period? Yeah. Period. Yeah. Since 12? 13th, 12? Yeah, 12, 13. I was at... Hey, what was the moment you realized that boxing
Starting point is 00:08:55 could change your life and your family's life? When I went to Olympics. Really? At 18, and then I was there with, like, Floyd Mayweather sitting down in Brazil. We talked about turn professional.
Starting point is 00:09:06 And I'm like, damn, I could really, like, be something in boxing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So you've always wanted to be a fight. From the time of the 12,
Starting point is 00:09:13 you always wanted to be a fight? No, I didn't. You didn't? I wasn't. I wanted to do that how to beat people up in the street. That's it. I didn't want to fight or nothing. Like, I was, I'm coming in.
Starting point is 00:09:23 No, you didn't want a balk, you wanted to fight. Yeah, I know how to, like, we go outside. I'm at a school party, saying. I'm going to beat anybody up. But then I just loved it. Right. I loved the handwraps. It was so cool to me putting on handwraps.
Starting point is 00:09:35 I loved the pads. Like, people hitting the pads like Floyd. And I just, I started seeing a kid named Bruce Carrinson walking to the gym. Okay. And I was like, this dude fight like Mayweather. I don't know. I'm like, I can't get close to Mayweather, but I'm going to train with this dude. and I'm going to start picking up these skills from him
Starting point is 00:09:50 and I started just being around him and I mesh a chord and after that I was going to tournaments and now I'm a full-fledged boxer and I remember sitting down I was at a tournament in ringside and I was looking at the TV and all the coaches before the tournament started everybody gathered around in the hotel room
Starting point is 00:10:06 and made a big commotion and it was a guy named Marcus Brown in the Olympics. This was 2012 Olympics and I'm looking like, what is this? They're like, it's the Olympics. Like, it's big.
Starting point is 00:10:15 So for them five years of me being the ammatures, I was like, to make it to Olympics. And when I did make it to Olympics, I was like, I'm going to turn professional and go all the way with it. Wow. That's unbelievable. So you and Keishan might have something going on. Yeah. You're excited about this? Opportunity? Of course. It's a great opportunity. It's a really, really great opportunity for my career. Is it going to be on the East Coast or it's going to be here in Vegas? Originally supposed to be in New York. Okay. Now, I'm hearing they try to put it somewhere like Europe, somewhere. Yeah, something. Anthony
Starting point is 00:10:47 Joshua and Fury. Oh, okay. But I thought pure said that fight was off. Is it back on? We don't know. I don't know what's going on. I'm supposed to be in the car. So I'm just chilling.
Starting point is 00:10:57 I'm waiting. Right. Man, that's unbelievable, man. Well, congratulations on your career, man. Best of luck, down the road, man. Come back. Hey, when you get that belt, come back and talk to us. Yes, I will.
Starting point is 00:11:06 Thank you, man. You need a sparring partner in camp. I let you put. I'm sure. I might need a tall, Lincoln South Paul. He ain't no South Paul, though. I am South Paul. You don't be South Paul?
Starting point is 00:11:14 Yeah, he knows South Paul, man. Be Orthodox, man. No, you're in the gym with them. They know. He pretend like he's Saupo, beat. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I want to fight Zab, too, right? We got a bear.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Man, what you call him, Scoop? You so quick? Huh? A bud. Hey. Man, I thought the man for the hit his head. I'm going to get out to death. Hey.
Starting point is 00:12:13 You know, you know why he scooped me, right? Why he scooped? You he didn't want to, he knew him. He don't want none of that. But he had, you know, because he had. He was going to drop you on your head, bro. He won't drop me. He's scorn now.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Yeah, he's strong. He's going to drop me. He won't drop. See, he knows you thinking about boxing. He said, I was. I was. And you know, it's funny? That's what I told him.
Starting point is 00:12:29 Hey, when I went to interview him and I was like, nah, bud. And so he was scurril. And I did him what he did to Ocho. That's why he said. Don't grab me like that. I did. I did it. Just like he did it.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Take me off all day long. Die hell down. There's a street fight. There's a street fight. There ain't no boxing to do this. But, no, but it was nice to have a bud on. I appreciate it. Very nice.
Starting point is 00:12:55 That was dope. He gave us 30 minutes more than what he was supposed to get. It was supposed to be here for 15 and he was here for 45 minutes. And so we appreciate that bud. Yeah. Unbelievable student of the game. Unbelievable boxing IQ. Like I said, I don't know why he doesn't get more credit for his boxing IQ.
Starting point is 00:13:11 His ringmanship made Bud special. Like I said, I saw him fight Spence. I saw him fight Canella. Man, that Canello fight, man That was good That was good That was a stem, but he stamped that thing With that was the way
Starting point is 00:13:26 Did you see the Spitz fight? Did you come see him in Vegas? No, I watched on TV Oh, okay That Canoe fight Not knowing which way it would go You understand how good Crawford is You understand how good Canello's been
Starting point is 00:13:38 So it was trying to kind of hard to predict Because you don't know what's going to happen That way, I mean you fight You fight the line in his den Boy, he had an answer for everything. Everything Conello threw. He had an answer for them. But you know, you heard him say he studied
Starting point is 00:13:55 him, though. Yeah. He did his homework. Hold on. You know everything they meant? He'd been studying him. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. For a minute. Man, it was like, I was like, man, I was on the edge of my seat. I said, bud, you got this thing. The last two rounds, just, hey, don't get dropped. That's it.
Starting point is 00:14:10 You know, I don't know what the judges saw. That round they gave him? Yeah. I don't know what they were looking at. Yeah, bud. But Bud, real student of the game, man. Real student. Love and passion. That's why he's saying for so long here.
Starting point is 00:14:21 You got him talking about something that he really enjoyed. He couldn't stop. Bro, that's how it goes. And the thing is, man, Bud was a wrestle. Wrestled in not in school? Oh, yeah. Oh, Joe, I wrestle too, Joe. I wrestle too.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Matter of him, his son just won a state, not long ago. Yeah. Yeah. But Bud is different. Bud is like, Bud got a side of him that's a flip. But he'll cool. I mean, yes, he loved talking about boxing. But just to get him away and to talk about other things,
Starting point is 00:14:55 he loves sports in general. He loves sports. He loves sports. He loves, man, it was great to have him on talking. We're going to have Zab Super Judah coming to the stage shortly. And then we're going to finish up with Max Kellerman. You better hurry up. I feel like my work ain't done.
Starting point is 00:15:13 I got to go tape club Sheshay today. Oh, you ain't do it yet? I ain't do it yet. Five today. So I got to go home, change, change shirts. I ain't changing shoes. Pants. We'll get back down here.
Starting point is 00:15:27 You want to gamble tonight, Joe? Yeah, man. I'm with you. I'm going to hear my line. I'm going to go, aunt. They'll tell me how much to take out. Let me know before the bank closed now. Five.
Starting point is 00:15:36 $5,000? Yep. Be' wait. I need to take out $5,000. To gamble with them? I don't know what the fuck I'm going to be doing. Gambody, we're gambling tonight. Us.
Starting point is 00:15:49 They're going to show me how, yeah. Hey, what bud that? He left? Man, steady looking for bud. Yeah, I think bud. Oh, he might be over there. No, he might be over there. Oh, all the smoke over there.
Starting point is 00:16:01 Huh? All the smoke, yeah. I think he over there. What's that? How much that is that? That's not real? That's yours? Let me see it.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Let me hold it real quick. You want that, Ash? Do it what? A chat? Guess what? She'll give it back. She don't know how to stop. A.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Hey, chat. She can't stop. She won't stop until they'll have it all. They give it all back. Hey, Chad, you see how much I won last night? Huh? Hey, money bag, yo. Y'all don't want to see me.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Keep lock. Don't worry about it. Huh? They'll have it back. He won't stop. I'm not to do no money spread like me, boy. That's how they know. Once you hit them, you got to come back, especially you think you were

Starting point is 00:17:19 That's all the take. That's going in 10 minutes. Hey, listen, this somebody's rent now. Yeah. I don't know who. For $1,000, I don't know what you're living in for $1,000. They ain't paying no rent in here. Man, hello.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Hello. Hello. That ain't paying no red today. And I'm excited to see this fight tomorrow, see what's really going on. Can't wait, boy. Everybody doesn't talk to the great game. Now it's time to put up and shut up. Ain't no more talking. Talking over with. You hear me?

Starting point is 00:19:32 Hold on, but who he's fighting on? The Nigerian dude, the big, he's fighting somebody that got some power. Some heavyweight. Yeah. He definitely looked, he looked apart on it. Yeah, he did. That's a big boy I want to see something

Starting point is 00:21:16 I'm so sorry. I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland Bookstore. That's crazy. I went to the Wonderland Bookstore. yesterday and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark 30. No way. You have to come to the last bookstore, though. Kim Cottrell is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday.

I'm obsessed.
Starting point is 00:22:30 From best-selling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table. It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse. Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations,

Listen to pro society on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. See you between the pages. By age 11 or so, at least 70% have a phone. Middle school is a different world than the one we grew up in. I'm Dr. Joy, and this is therapy for black girls. We spend real time on it in our surviving middle school run, bringing in a child psychologist and a psychiatrist who's raising two black girls of his own to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now.
Starting point is 00:23:22 So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological chaos happening all of the same time. We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust. There's belonging. You could think of belonging as, I can be myself and I can still be accepted. And then there's fitting in. Spitting in says, I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection. Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers, sitting down. with therapist, Keir Gaines on Black fatherhood and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage. You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips, you have on the dressy,
Starting point is 00:24:00 you have to cross your legs. That's the range of this run, from screen time to identity to the father's doing the work at home. We have to get off her device, but the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want you as your adults in their life to miss out on. This has been our surviving middle school run. Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this. I'm Dr. Joy. Listen to Therapy for Black Girls on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle.
Starting point is 00:24:40 I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinero, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people, and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is, and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to be a moment.
Starting point is 00:25:19 book your first trip. I hope you listen to Solita on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Nicola Yolkich has had enough of fans approaching him in public and wants to be left alone. I'm getting more and more bothered by popularity.
Starting point is 00:25:36 This is going to sound corny, but I'm getting rooted to people who approach me. Honestly, it's tiring. Some people around me know I don't take pictures because it's my time. I sound rude again, but I can do but what can I do? If people can't understand me, I understand everything. But it's been 11, 12 years, and enough is enough.
Starting point is 00:25:54 Amen. Some guys don't want to have to deal with all that, Uncle Ocho. He's not America. And that's what it is? That's what it is. If I see him in Denver, he's going to give me a picture. I don't care. I'm going to bother you.
Starting point is 00:26:06 I never have an opportunity to meet you. I never have a chance to see you again. But give me a picture. All that being rude. It comes with the territory. It's a part of your job. And I'm going to be nice, too. How are you doing this yoga?
Starting point is 00:26:18 You come by better getting into the locker room. Oh. You probably ain't going to see him on the street. Nah. Not him. And I like horses, too. So there's a certain thing we could bond on. You're being rude.
Starting point is 00:26:29 And I know about horses too. But, you know, that's the thing. That's the difference between, you know, a lot of sometimes European or foreigners and an American athlete. Americans, we think we're obligated. You heard what you're saying is a part of your job. They feel an obligation that you take time out of your schedule and be your busy day.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Right. When you don't want to be bothered, you don't want to be bothered. But somebody else don't want to be bothered. Oh, he rude. Yoke said I'm being rude and ruder. And I don't care. That's how you got to go, bro. Sometimes you got to be a little selfish with your time.
Starting point is 00:27:01 Yeah. You know, you get, hey, hey, because Yoke's like a, he's more like a megastar, Uncle Ocho. He can't go nowhere, bro. Think about it. So anywhere he goes and somebody see him. It don't matter, bro. They're going to want to pitch us.
Starting point is 00:27:11 First of all, he's seven foot tall. He's seven foot? Yeah. Yeah, he's seven foot tall. So it ain't like he can go somewhere and hide and people not know who he is, people are going to like, man, he got to play basketball. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:26 Even if you don't follow the sport, you got like, somebody's seven foot tall, you automatically assume. Even if he doesn't play basketball, you automatically assume that he does. And so, you know, he's probably with his family. You know, I think he's got two little girls now. You've got a wife. And, bro, when he out in public, he's like, this is my time with the family. I don't get a whole lot of time with my family because I'm playing games.
Starting point is 00:27:46 I'm training. I'm trying to be the best player I can possibly be. and when he's out with his family, he just wants to be left alone. And I get it. I totally get it. And that's seven foot. It don't matter if they know you play ball or not.
Starting point is 00:27:58 They're going to want a picture, bro. Trust you. You know, that's just the way it is. And then people are like, well, who is that? I don't know who it is, but I took a picture with him. And it only take one person. That's it. And everybody else, ten other people,
Starting point is 00:28:09 they ain't got to know who you are. Let me take them out. Can I get one, too? Thank you. What they say. It ain't nobody but me. But as soon as I take a picture, then everybody else.
Starting point is 00:28:17 Right, right, right. You feed one bird. Yeah. Yeah. He got some, head. Yeah. We flock right down to you. Exactly how I go, bro.
Starting point is 00:28:26 But I definitely could understand what Yoki is talking about. Because sometimes, you know, you're not, you know, sometimes you're not always in the best mood. You're not always in the best mood, man. Yeah. Sometimes I feel like I ain't a good by. I just like, you know what, let me go ahead and stay my black asshole. And when people talk about being celebrities, that's the, you know, that's the overrated thing because it's hard to be known. when you get to a certain point, bro.
Starting point is 00:28:50 You can't go, you can't go to the grocery store. You can't go to these different retail places, you know what I mean? Yes. Without being bothered, they're just going to come with it. Well, y'all better get ready. Uncle, that's going to be us. You think you think y'all, you think y'all too famous now.
Starting point is 00:29:04 Give it, give me another, what? Give me another six months. Six months? What? What? We're going to need security. We wouldn't even be able to walk through this hotel, boy. Well, we walked back.
Starting point is 00:29:14 I walked back way. I didn't go through the baby. Okay, my bad. I only go through the main interests anyway. Yeah, Joe. It's going to be crazy in a minute, bro. We got Zab coming to the, uh... Yep.
Starting point is 00:29:32 We're going to ask Jad. I'm going to ask Jad. What do you think about this fight, man? Yeah. Go ahead. You can start it off there. Yeah, I'm going to start that thing off. I'll introduce him and then you started off.
Starting point is 00:29:45 Where it's going to be, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. I hope we get a good fight. The last thing I want to see how it's that this build up and everybody talking about this fight and they come out there, it'd be a dud. Yeah. Yeah, that's the worst. I know one thing. What?
Starting point is 00:29:59 If Connor come out then is aggressive off jump Because Ryan can't fight in the pocket Once he smother them and making them uncomfortable And do all that turning, boy, it's going to be a long night Come on, come on, you good. Got Zab Super Judah joining us. What's up, bro, you good? What's good, what's good?
Starting point is 00:30:18 What's good, what's good? Go ahead, don't you? Listen, you've always been a student in the game, man, very sharp, very good at what you do, the sweet sides in general. Garcia Ben, how you see it playing out. Basically, you know, skills,
Starting point is 00:30:31 I mean, styles always makes fights. Based on the style of these two fighters, I want to hear your honest opinion on who you got. I think match-up-wise is good. You know, at first, when Connor put those pitches out of the weight of the wagering, I was like, ooh, I was kind of worried, you know what I'm saying? But then seeing him yesterday,
Starting point is 00:30:49 he looked very energetic, very full, very healthy. So I said, you know, maybe those are AI pictures. You know, that was like a psychological mental game right there, you know what I'm saying? And, you know, if he did that for a psychological mental game, that was very smart. You know what I'm saying? But I think that
Starting point is 00:31:06 when the corner to the fight, I got a chance to see Connor in L.A. training. You know, he's faster than what I thought he was. You know what I'm saying? He's a very big guy, a very big young kid, and you know, I just think that, you know, if he could put together some good punches
Starting point is 00:31:23 and, you know, keep coming forward, he might be successful. And then on the other hand, I think Connor Ben is, he's not a guy that I think that's coming to the fight to get knocked out. He's coming to bring it.
Starting point is 00:31:37 I believe that for him to be successful, he got to make it dirty. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? You got to be in his chest. You got to make it uncomfortable for, uh, for, for, uh, for a, cause you.
Starting point is 00:31:47 Yeah, you can't just give him a regular clean fight and a lot of him move around and just throw the hook and the move and jabbing. Nope, you got to be in his chest. Press him around. Press him around. throw him around. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:31:58 Make it an ugly fight. Wow. What you call him and said that. Ocho was just talking about that, that Ryan doesn't like to fight in the pocket. He needs distance. He won't separation. Like you said, get that hook off.
Starting point is 00:32:09 And a lot of times when you look at Roley, Roli neutralized the hook and then landed his shot. Is Connor patient enough? Because the thing that if you go over and look at it with Roli, when Roli dropped it, Roli was patient. Right. And I think that's what hurt Roling the last fight
Starting point is 00:32:25 against Tiofimo. He was too patient. Right, right, right. He got aggressive one round, round five, run that round decisively, and then he went back to being patient, and then Tiofimo picked him off. So is he going to be patient in this situation? Because Ryan is looking to let his hands go.
Starting point is 00:32:41 We know that. But Ryan is also looking to counter. So is kind of going to be patient enough to combat Ryan's style? I think being patient in this fight is the wrong fight. You've got to be aggressive. You got to be aggressive. Okay. You got to be
Starting point is 00:32:55 aggressive. You got to take it. You got to take it to him. You got to make Ryan do things that he does not want to do. Make him throw punches that he does not want to do. Make him use them back on the quads. Make him go backwards. You know what I'm saying? We all know. My athlete, that's no joke, you know what I mean? That ties the legs down quick. You know what I mean? So you can't allow him to come forward, throw that hook, get his one, two, things off. You know what I'm saying? Move running. You can't. You can't. That'll make a bad night for a kind of been. What all you've accomplished in the sport of boxing? What's next for you, bro? What you're doing now?
Starting point is 00:33:34 You still training, working out? What's up? Oh, I mean, listen, working out is a lifestyle. Yeah. It's a lifestyle for me from the age of six years old to the age of 41. That was my duration of amateur and professional career. Yeah. I never done nothing else.
Starting point is 00:33:46 I never played no other sports. I never had a job, anything. Yeah. You know what I mean? So I think now when me be 49 years old, it's embedded into me. You know what I'm saying? have to work out for therapy. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:33:59 It's therapy. It's for mental, you know what I mean? And I got to keep going. Am I going to compete again? No. Right. No. But just being in that type of shape, mentally preparing yourself.
Starting point is 00:34:09 Yeah, I get you. I enjoy this side of the game way, way, way, way better. No person's taken. I've seen your son, your son, box? Yeah, yeah, yeah. How old is it? I'm 17. 17?
Starting point is 00:34:19 Okay. And then I got two twin boys. They're cornerbacks. Cornerbacks, yeah. They're going to play football. Yeah. Yeah, they 11. Oh, they can get this work.
Starting point is 00:34:28 Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, and they box. In their box. Yeah. That's laugh. Oh, yeah, you're raising soldiers over there, ain't you? I got soldiers over there. You know what?
Starting point is 00:34:35 I got a pop-worn a football team in California. I'm just, um, SFV charges. Yeah. And I'm saying, I'm out there with Deshaun and Reggie Bush as my coaches. Yeah, so we're out there having a, we're having a good time. Actually, they play tomorrow, but I'm going to be here. Yeah. I know they're going to be successful.
Starting point is 00:34:51 Yeah. You recently spoke about the fight. You rewatch the fight. with Floyd Mayweather. And you said Roger coming up on the apron, you said that should have been a DQ. Automatic, tomorrow night, if Connor Ben Daed gets up on the ring
Starting point is 00:35:05 during the fight of the action, they're going to automatically disqualify him. Yeah. For getting up there. In this fight, why I was overlooked or not frowned upon? Right. You know, it beats me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:18 You know what I mean? Have you thought, so that was, was that your first time? So have you thought about, Like how different that would have been? Because I don't think anybody wanted Floyd. I don't think you really wanted Floyd to get DQ. You're just saying that's the rules of the, that's just the rules of boxing.
Starting point is 00:35:33 If your corner steps up on the ring during the action, that's a DQ. But then, what about the knockdown? They overlooked that too. Right. They overlooked the guy coming to ring. It was a lot of things that was overlooked that night that could have made a difference in the decision of the fight. Right. So my whole thing was, and then right after the fight, they accused me of incited and a riot.
Starting point is 00:35:52 I was suspended for one year. that's why we never seen a rematch. Right. Right after they got me out the way, ASAP, you know what I'm saying? And then Floyd went ahead and did his career, and then by the time I came back after the year, they already told me he had a full schedule and plans of doing other things. Right.
Starting point is 00:36:10 So I was never, you know what I'm saying, giving my rematch. Right. You know what I mean? So that's probably why, you know, and we spoke about this, probably why, you know, I was a little bitter, a little salty when I seen Floyd in different places, I would look at him like, like, you know what I'm saying? Like one night we was in the club, and he sent me some champagne over to the table.
Starting point is 00:36:30 I said, I send it back. I said, don't send me champagne. Send me a contract with your name on it. Oh. And he looked at me like, what the hell of wrong with you? You know what I mean? But, you know, that was the competitiveness and, you know, in myself. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:44 So, you know. You really wanted that rematch, huh? Yeah. As a warrior, 100%, you know what I'm saying? I was faster than them. You know. You was fast in the Floyd? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:53 You got to go back in the club. watch it, huh? Yeah, go back and watch it. Now, it was a hell of a fight. Now, it was a hell of a fight. Yeah, yeah. I mean, listen, I have a lot of respect for him. He's a hell of a fighter. He has, you know, he earned his name. You know what I'm saying? As TBE, you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:37:10 He has radar defense mechanisms in his head because I ain't slow. And I was trying to get him out of it. I mean, it was a fraction of an inch. He was, you know what I mean? I was like, yeah, yeah, he, I. What makes him sense? so skilled because we saw, I know you remember of Sweet Pete Whitaker.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Sweet Pete Whitaker had, I mean, that head moving like that but not like Floyd. And Floyd had power also. The Floyd could pick something off and bam, right back at you. Ah. Yeah. Right. Right. How was, I mean, we've never seen anybody's, I don't know if we've seen anybody before
Starting point is 00:37:44 or since. Sweet Pete might have been the closest thing that we've seen but Floyd took it to a whole new level. Well, he was taught that style from day one. Okay. He's He's never learned any other style, you know what I'm saying, coming from Roger and his father. That's the style that they had. Right.
Starting point is 00:38:00 And they gave it to him. Pernel Whitaker was a different type of animal. You know what I'm saying? You know, Pernel was my coach. Actually, when I won my last world title, you know, he was my professional debut. I was a Coleman event on his car. So sweet people was my guy. He had defense like no other.
Starting point is 00:38:17 Like no other. I was boxing with him since 16 years old. Yeah. So Pernel was a totally different animal. You know what I'm saying? not taking anything away from Floyd, but he wasn't moving like how Purnell was.
Starting point is 00:38:29 I mean, like I said, if both was great, it was just two different times. Yeah, Sweet Pete was moving his whole body. Yeah, yeah, Pernell, yeah, yeah. And Floyd worked on more offense than, you know what I'm saying, you know what I'm saying, with the defense. Pernel was just, he wanted to show you out. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:45 He wanted to make you look dumb and stupid. Yeah, yeah. I watched the highlight the other day of him fighting Dale O'Hoya. Yeah. And Dale O'Hoyer was swigging, and he was like, oh, my God. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:55 It was about 16 punches, right? You know, I was crazy. That was a little believer. Did you ever, did you ever get an opportunity to see Manuel Gusis fight in person? Ever? So I used to spar with Emmanuel Gusis in Florida, yeah. Yo, I tell you a funny story. That's my favorite fighter.
Starting point is 00:39:15 Based on the entertainment aspect he brings to the ring. Man, listen to me. We hired him, he came to camp. I don't know, we was fighting some particular fighter. Yeah. And we hired him. He came to the camp. We got into a real fight the first day.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Real fight. You know, I know it was hard for boxing to get into a real fight in the ring, right? It's just not crazy. But what happened was when I was jab, he would grab it like this and pull me to him and it hit me. So I've never seen this before. I never felt this. I never seen this. And I was like, you can't do that.
Starting point is 00:39:49 You know what I'm saying? Wait, first of all, what are you doing? because, you know, you don't really understand it. You're just getting hit. And I'm like, what the hell is he doing? I just felt my arm getting jerked, and then he's cracking me. Anyway, I told him to calm down. He can't do it.
Starting point is 00:40:04 He kept doing it, and then we got into a row. You know, I kind of, like, I was wild back then. I kind of scooped him up and slammed him and getting tussed on the ground. But, Emmanuel Gus said, I have a lot of respect for him. He was a hell of a hell of firefighter with his own style. I don't think that, and that's crazy you say that was your favorite fighter. I don't think he was giving enough credit for who he was. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:40:26 I mean, he was the first guy that going in with Floyd and draw blood from Floyd. Nobody's ever seen Floyd like bleeding in fights. Right. A man who would bust him up, you know what I'm saying? So, you know what I mean? Got to give him a lot of credit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:40 Yeah. Zad, why don't we see the fights that we... You remember back in the 80s? You saw Duran and Hagler. You saw Duran and Sugar Ray. You saw Sugar Ray and Hagler. You saw He saw Heard. Sugar Ray and Herndt.
Starting point is 00:40:52 You saw these fights in the 70s. The heavyweights fought everybody. You wasn't ducking nobody. Heavyweight Ollie had to fight for him and Frazier. And Frazier had to fight Holmes and had to fight this guy, had to fight that guy. Why can't we get the fights that we want to see now? So, you know, somebody asked me and I told him, I said, I think it's because of the money. It's because of the money.
Starting point is 00:41:14 And, like, today's, in today's world, your undefeated record is like an 800-critical. Wow. which allows you to cash in on the big money. So the longer you keep the 800 credit score, you can go to any bank, show them your credit score, and you're going to get that money. Yeah, you go, you know what I'm saying? So guys are afraid to tangle with certain fighters
Starting point is 00:41:33 because they go, I don't know, that might get the L and then it's getting over. That's the 800 dies or 700. Right, right, and I can't get that same credit loan no more. You know what I'm saying? I mean, we didn't have guys back in the days making $40 million, $25 million, $200 million, like $100,000, you know what I'm Canello and budding them.
Starting point is 00:41:52 You know what I'm saying? I mean, they didn't have guys doing that. Tyson, in my era, was the biggest guy. He's making $30 million, $30,000, $30,000 a fight. That was astronomical back then. You know what I'm saying? We looked there like, $30,000. What the hell?
Starting point is 00:42:05 And we think about it. When was the last time Canelo fought for $30 million? He won't fall for number 40, 50s, $100. If you mentioned $30 million to Canelo, he's going to let, you know what, call me back. Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:42:19 100% You know. That just goes to show you. Yeah, because I'd be like, man, and everybody will be talking, I want to fight this, I want to fight this guy, I want to fight this guy, and then when it come down to it, the fight fall through. Or now they put all these terms where we got to have a rehydration clause or I want to go up, you know, you got to come down to me. Bro, somebody in 154, they're not coming down to 140. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:40 I think that was the deciding factor with the Haney and Shakur fight. Yeah. You know, they wanted to come down to 44 when Devon was 47. You know what I'm saying? And then, you know, it was just, you know, Devin's like, okay, well, why should I go to 44 and sacrifice myself of losing weight and going in a fight and then she called, like, well, you did it before? Right.
Starting point is 00:43:01 With another guy, so why not do it with me? You know what I'm saying? So I understand both sides, but I think that that's the greatest fight in my book that never happens. You don't think it's going to happen? That's the greatest fight in my book that never happens. Hold on. Why? Because of negotiations.
Starting point is 00:43:16 Oh, okay. Who's A side? There you go. There you go. And that's what's going to come down. That's what it's going to come down because you got Bill Haney on one side of the manager, you got Jay Prince on the other side and the other manager. You got two moguls that are like B side.
Starting point is 00:43:33 They don't know what I mean. Both of those guys know nothing about B. Right. Nothing. You know what I mean? So they're like, take the B side. No, no, no, no, no. You never going to do that.
Starting point is 00:43:40 It's going to be priced out. It's got to be A. All the way. And we know in Boxing it can't be to A side. Because somebody goes, wait, I ain't walking out. first. Right. But man, we'll pay to see that, though. Yeah, we would. That'll be a mega fight. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:43:54 people pay to see that. You might see the first fight where both fights walk out the same time. Exactly. That's the only way. And then, one guy going to want to make $2 more than the next fight. You're not making the same money as I'm making. Nope. Nope. Yep.
Starting point is 00:44:11 But that's the greatest fight that never happens to me. You think it'll happen, though? No. At some point? Never? No, I don't know Maybe later when they get older Right They're going to be the same Yeah, it ain't going to be the same
Starting point is 00:44:23 You know what it's going to be like It's going to be like Pachia Mayweather? Pachia Mewa. Yeah, it happened But we know we wanted that fight five years, six years sooner. Earlier, yeah, yeah. And I hate that
Starting point is 00:44:34 You're in your prime Both of these guys are in their prime right now This is when they should be This is when they should be locking horns Right, right Yeah What's another fight you like to see? Um, I like to see Hitchison and Kishan.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Mm, he's talking about that. Yeah, he's talking about that. Yeah, Hitchison, that would be a good fight. That would be a good fight because Hidgison is a hell of fire boxer, clean fundamentals or a shop. And Kishan is an excellent counterpuncher. Yeah. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:45:05 But you got to remember, is Hitchison going to be there for him to counterpunch? Right. And then Hidgerson is not going to oppose a big enough threat to stand it long enough for Kishon to, you know what thing, get on his shit. You know what I mean? That's an excellent fight right there. As soon as he mentioned that, I say, but that's going to be one hell of a chess match.
Starting point is 00:45:23 Hell of a chess match. Oh, man. We had Bud on here for a little while. You think Bud comes back? Is there a fighter out there that can get Bud Crawford to come out of retirement? You know what? I was just asking him that
Starting point is 00:45:36 and from what, the way he explained it, I don't think it is. But I like the way he keeps all these boys on edge. Yeah. Like, mention my name, and I'm coming back.
Starting point is 00:45:46 You know what I'm saying? He got everybody on edge. Like, you're like, oh, word? Say it again. There's no shortcut for saving time. But saving money is simple. Just combine your car and home insurance with Bel Air Direct and save. Get a quote at bellair direct.com.

Starting point is 00:48:13 who love to think a little too much, you're in the right place.
Starting point is 00:48:45 So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological and psychological chaos happening all this same time. We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust. There's belonging. You could think of belonging as I can be myself and I can still be accepted. And then there's fitting in. Spitting in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection. Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers, sitting down. with therapists cure gains on Black fatherhood and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage. You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips.
Starting point is 00:49:22 You have on the dressy. You have to cross your legs. That's the range of this run, from screen time to identity to the father's doing the work at home. We have to get off her device. But the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want you as your adults in their life
Starting point is 00:49:36 to miss out on.
Starting point is 00:50:03 I chose option B. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version
Starting point is 00:50:37 of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to be. book your first trip. I hope you listen to Solita on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You know what I mean? So, you know, but do I...
Starting point is 00:50:55 I don't know, man, man. Listen, you know, in boxing, your pockets say when you come back to boxing. Right now, his pockets are good. You know what I'm saying? His pockets are good. They're overflowing from that with that Cadillo, but...
Starting point is 00:51:09 Think about this. Bud is in a position. He's retired. He's retired on top, right? Every boxer has been able to retire on top. And every last one of them, money's been able to get them to come out of retirement. Right.
Starting point is 00:51:22 Every time. And I'm sure at some point, I don't know when. I think Bud is coming back. I mean, listen, man, they put a three with a bunch of O's behind it. I can't see him saying no to that. That's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:51:36 I can't see him saying no. I say it 150. Yeah, that's the thing you want three. Yeah. Yeah. So, but what does, because that seemingly the only fact that that's appealing to him is probably the boots fight. So does boots come up to 68? I don't, Bud ain't coming down to 54.
Starting point is 00:51:54 If you're 300, I'm going to 54. I'm going down. Man, Bud died to 54 going to look like a smoker. I know. I'm going down, man. I mean, do I think 60? I think we flick the difference. Yeah, 60.
Starting point is 00:52:17 Because Boots fight at 54, go to 60, Bud just fought in last part of 68. But then there's a disadvantage for a boost, because he's never been comfortable at 160 pounds. See, me, I remember that. Even when you're going to, like, most fighters that fight at 160, they're coming down from 180. Yes.
Starting point is 00:52:37 They're coming down just to make that weight, and then they're going back up. Right. When you're just coming up to the 160 marker, and that's what you carrying, fighting a bigger guy, I mean, that's risky as well. Is Bud that much bigger than boots? Bud walk around. Bud probably walk around like 170, 175. But he's staying in good shape, though.
Starting point is 00:52:57 He does. And he's solid. He's compact. Yes. He's solid and compact. Yeah, yeah. So I've been known for a long time. I've never seen him out of shape.
Starting point is 00:53:06 Yeah. Never seen him out of shape. That's what I was telling him. I saw him out. I interviewed him a couple of, about a year ago before he fought, probably about five months before he fought, Canelo. And he hadn't even started camp, but you could tell he was like, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:22 He stayed within striking distance. It's not going to take him, it don't really take him to full training camp to get to where he needs to be. Yeah. Because he's really close to, he watches what he eats, he trains, he does and stuff that he needs to do in order to stay within striking distance. Because, you know, like you said, guys that come to 168, his 168, he walking around at 190.
Starting point is 00:53:41 Yeah, yep. Easy. Canelo walking around. Easy. Canello got that Mexican blood in so, you know, their diet. Canelo walk around 190, 190, 195, easy. Yes, easy, easy. And he comes down to that weight class.
Starting point is 00:53:55 I used to watch Fernando Vargas and training camp the same way. He used to walk around big, and he comes down to 147. I used to be like, how the hell did you just do that? Yeah, he said you dropped 30, 40 pounds. That was amazing to me. Artur Gotti. Another one. Same way. He used to come down to 40. No, 130. Oh, 30? Yeah, Goddy. Yeah, Godd used to come down to one 30.
Starting point is 00:54:17 When he fight Florida? He fought Florida at 40, right? He fought Florida at 40, yeah. Yeah, yeah, he fought for that 40. I remember that fight in Atlantic City, man. Florida just. But you know what? We got to say Godi wasn't Godi that we know. No, yeah. There were too many wars with Mickey Ward. Too many wars. Yeah. Too many wars. Yeah. That style ain't conducive for long, for a long career. You fight like that? I fought Mickey Ward in 98 and that body shot,
Starting point is 00:54:43 sometimes I wake up and I still remember it. I still feel it. Michael Ward is a tough guy, man. Tough guy. Zab, appreciate you, man. All the best man. Stay up, bro. Appreciate you, baby.
Starting point is 00:54:57 Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yeah, appreciate you, bro. Max, let's fucking talk boxing, baby. Zab Super Judah. We don't think Zab Super Jewel. For joining us, man. That was awesome.
Starting point is 00:55:16 unbelievable. We got Max. Max Kellerman join us here. I got an ad tell Max get me on the broadcast with him, man. Let me call the fight. So we're going to join. He's over there talking to Zab right now. You call Kennedy? What she won't?
Starting point is 00:55:45 What? What? What? Kennedy Won't. School been in two weeks. Now my daughter I want a new backpack. I'm trying to figure out why my phone ringing. He tried to shoot on a new backpack School just started We got you one That ain't the same
Starting point is 00:56:09 Nice cutting into our time We ain't gonna have much time You want to be there Huh? I'm got something He got something to do No, I'm good Thank you though
Starting point is 00:56:24 Why? What's about it? Go on, man What's wrong with him? I'm going I appreciate the gesture Max What's up, baby? You're good?
Starting point is 00:56:41 Max. What's up, bro? How you doing? Let's go ahead Let's start with this fight Yeah, what's up? Ryan, Connor? Yep. What you think of?
Starting point is 00:56:52 I mean, you know, I'm so conditioned that in the old days on HBO, they didn't want you to ever pick the fight, right? Especially if you're calling the fight. Right. Connor is the underdog for a reason. Okay. Ryan was a, you know, like, it's funny, as you get older, you realize, if you want to know who the best fighters in the world are,
Starting point is 00:57:13 look at their amateur records. It almost always works this way. Right. If you were dominant internationally, dominant internationally, gold medals and stuff, you're Andre Ward, you're Floyd Mayweather, who got a bronze but should have had a gold, you're Pernell Whitaker, you're Roy Jones, you're the top of the top.
Starting point is 00:57:26 Yes. One level below that is you dominated nationals and you competed internationally. You might win a belt. You might, you know, be even a real champion in a division. Okay. One level below that is you dominated local golden gloves in a real place like New York or L.A.
Starting point is 00:57:42 in terms of the competition. Right. but you, you know, only can, maybe you're a contender, maybe you could grab a belt for a second, right? Ryan Garcia was beating all the guys in the juniors, but turn pro before he really tested himself against the top amateurs, but he was like that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:58:01 He has a lot of names on his resume that are dominant fighters now when they were kids, right? That's not Connor Ben. Right. Connor Ben's done it through, like, when he's had the opportunity, willpower and toughness. Right. So Ryan's like a two and a half to one favorite for that reason. Right.
Starting point is 00:58:18 So he mentioned that he didn't start boxing until he was 16, 17, he's going to be in. Right. And he didn't until he found out his dad was. They'd be like, it's in me to fight. And it is in him. He's a tough guy. Yes.
Starting point is 00:58:27 But, you know, like Ryan's got special kind of talent. And you know, like great players, no, Twitchies. Yes. If you saw this dude run right away, you know, okay, he's a different kind of twitchy athlete, right? Ryan's got those kind of twitchies. But then think about this, Max. You always know styles make fights. So you understand, Rich, I mean, Ryan has that special twitch.
Starting point is 00:58:51 He has his quickness. He has that left hook. He has that jab. What happens when someone nullifies that jab? What happens if Conner Ben comes in and is aggressive? It makes Ryan comfortable. Ryan is not comfortable fighting inside the pocket. He's not comfortable fighting on his back foot.
Starting point is 00:59:05 What happens then? Do you have the answer for that? I would say that if Connor... I don't even think it's the... Yes, the jab technically there are different things. But the real danger is, and Ryan knock Barrios down with the right hand. Yes. But the real danger is Ryan's left hook.
Starting point is 00:59:17 That's the decapitator, right? So, like, you know, boxing is rock paper scissors. Muhammad Ali is the boxer. Yes. He's bad for George Foreman. Foreman, one at a time. Big shots, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:30 Ali makes a miss, boom, boom. But Frazier is bad for Ali, high volume. So Ali makes a miss, miss, miss. Frasier's like, that's nothing. Come on, let's go. I got five, ten more coming in their way, right? Yeah. But Foreman is bad for Frasier.
Starting point is 00:59:41 Frazier, because to get inside, you've got to get through the danger zone of that power. Yes. Yes. So the question is, is this Frazier foreman where Conner's got to get inside the danger zone of the power and on his way in, Ryan catches him and hurts him? Or is it a situation where if you take away some of Ryan's offensive weapons and he gets inside as Connor more like the pressure fighter against the boxer? And now he starts to overwhelm him on the inside. Yeah. Right. I mean, two and a half to one that on his way in he gets caught.
Starting point is 01:00:14 Yeah. But it ain't five to one or ten to one and the odds are shrinking. Right. Because people recognize that Conner's got that dog in him. Yeah. And he's even been calling Ryan out. Like, you know, we don't know that about you. He's saying, we know it about you and it's not there.
Starting point is 01:00:30 Yeah. But I think it's fair to say we don't know it about him yet. Right, right. What's preventing boxing from consistently making these big fights? Here's the galaxy brain answer, okay? If I were to say, hey, you know what they should do in football? There's a million football leagues. I'm talking about Roger Goodell.
Starting point is 01:00:54 Hey, you know what they should do in basketball? There are a billion basketball leagues. I'm talking about Adam Silver. Hey, you know what they should do in boxing? Who are we talking about? There's no they there. There's no they, right? So there's no one looking out for the long-term interest.
Starting point is 01:01:08 So let me give you an example. once upon a time baseball didn't have a commissioner and now kind of saw a mountain land and racist and kept it segregated and all that but I'm making a different point about it after what they called the black sock scandal
Starting point is 01:01:23 because if it's black it has to be bad you understand how it works so they fixed the world series they're like okay we need a commissioner now I'm quite sure there were alcohol sponsors right like companies who came to different owners like yeah we want to give you 20 grand to put that on the outfield wall
Starting point is 01:01:39 Right. Now, Commissioner Landis could sit there and go, yeah, that's good for you in the short term. Right. But we want mothers wanting their kids to come to the ballpark. That's bad for us. Right. There is no they there in boxing. Okay.
Starting point is 01:01:52 So everyone's reaching for all the money they can get as fast as they can get it. Right, right. And that's the kind of big answer. Right. Right. Why don't do? Everyone's got to get paid. We, but, Max, being the boxing official, not who you are, you remember in the
Starting point is 01:02:09 70s. Every heavyweight fought every other heavyweight. In the 80s. Sugar Ray, Hagler, Hearns, Barkley, Duran, nobody, duck, nobody. Well, so first of all, when Don King and Bob Aaron were running things, you ran into some of the same problems you get now, which is there is, so why am I going to risk my guy against your guy unless there's really enough money in it, right? But the name recognition was so high, right? We understand the world through storytelling. Right? Why do people, besides the fact
Starting point is 01:02:42 that you guys are good on TV, right? Right. Why do people care about you before you were ever on TV? Because they understood your character from the TV show you were on called the NFL. Right.
Starting point is 01:02:52 Right? And so they were interested in you. There was, like, you had name recognition. So in boxing, when they knew the characters, look, boxing beats everything. I tell people all the time, I do this famous thought experiment. I'll say, like, what's your favorite?
Starting point is 01:03:06 What's your favorite sport? football with me No it's not It's boxing And I'll prove it to you in 30 seconds You come to a street corner Flag football game Stick ball
Starting point is 01:03:16 Hoops A fist fight What are you watching The fish fight? Everybody go turn to watch The fist fight Right so boxing is just better Right
Starting point is 01:03:25 Because everything's a metaphor For something else If you can't tackle Chad It's because he's metaphorically Imposed his will on you By jukeing you And then get it right Okay
Starting point is 01:03:33 Boxing it's like tennis Tennis take away the ball Lennox Lewis hits Mike with a right hand. Mike Tyson goes down. His brain tells his legs, get up, can't do it. He's separated him from his own will, right? He's more compelling. So now let's redo the thought experiment.
Starting point is 01:03:47 Why isn't boxing more popular? Redo it. MJ and LeBron are playing one-on-one over here. Over here, Barry Bonds is hitting off of Roger Clemens. Over here, you know, like, you get it, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then over here, it's just two, nobody's having a fist fight. Now, boxing is so bad that people are still sometimes watching.
Starting point is 01:04:06 the fight, but now it's different. If you don't know the characters, so in the 70s, Muhammad Ali is the most famous man in the world. Not just athlete, he's the most famous man in the world. Right? That's worth much. So you can make the fights because everyone who's, there's fan interest,
Starting point is 01:04:22 there's money involved. Terrence Crawford finally got shine when he fought Canello Alvarez. But if you stop your average American on the street, probably even now, they might not know who but is. There's no they there looking out for the long-term interest of the sport, no plans made, no TV deals the way the other major sports have.
Starting point is 01:04:42 Therefore, you don't know the characters, so you don't care as much. I mean, that's the big, I said, like, galaxy brain answer to the question. What's the fight you want to see? If somebody says, Matt... Come on, man, you know what it is. I'll tell... Everyone's going to say the same thing. Just say it.
Starting point is 01:04:55 Don't even fuck around. Just say it. Tell me. No, I'm not going to tell you. You tell me. The fight that you want to see right now. Yeah, no, no, just say it. Come on, man.
Starting point is 01:05:02 Why are we even playing? Why are you doing? Boots and Bud, you act like you're surprised. I thought you were going to say David and Shakur. Okay. Boots and Bud is about to start ding, ding, round one on this network. The Super Bowl is about to kick off on that network. What are you watching live?
Starting point is 01:05:21 What are you recording? I'm Boots and Bud. You're watching Boots and Bud live. Boxing beats everything. When it's at its best, boxing beats everything. Right. But you don't give it to us. You don't give it your best.
Starting point is 01:05:33 That's why I'm at Zoufa. I'm at Zufa because in the history. history of boxing, Zufa boxing. In the history of boxing, there's only, of combat sports. Yeah. There's only one man who ever built an institution that will outlive him. For example, Don King. Don King was the biggest promoter in the world. He was. Yeah. When he, now he's in, you know, he's been in decline for a while, but so he has a little suite of offices, half a dozen people working for him. He goes out of business. That's it. Bob Aram, same thing. Doesn't people working
Starting point is 01:06:03 for, main events. Just name, name the, name the operation. You ever been over to UFC headquarters? I have. It's like going to ESPN. It's like an airline hanger. It's a campus. There are hundreds and hundreds. It's an institution, right?
Starting point is 01:06:16 Yep. So when Dana called me and said, hey, I'm thinking about doing this thing, would you be in? I'm thinking, this is the phone call I've been waiting my whole life. I've been waiting for, are they to be there? Yeah. Now, people will have criticism of Dana in terms of what is this guy getting paid or how you're organizing this. Those are things that you can negotiate later when something actually exists. But he's the only dude who built something that's a real business, that's an institution.
Starting point is 01:06:48 So I'm excited by the possibility. There's no guarantees. But maybe Zoufa boxing can become the NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball, and there can be a they there and everyone gets to see. You know, it's the Rams and the Seahawks, NFC title game. No, you know what? We'll see that in a couple years. We're not ready to play yet. You know, we're going to, we don't want to play them. We'll play, we'll play Tennessee. Right. And you could buy it on pay-per-view or you don't just, you just don't get to watch any football. Right. Right. That can come to an end and you can get the Super Bowl every year, right?
Starting point is 01:07:26 If I said, Max, I'm only that you call one fight. Mm-hmm. Any fight, it could be a future fight or somebody in the past, what fight would you call? that's already happened? It's already happened or it might happen. Ooh, that's a great question. Or it might happen. I mean, well, it's an unfair, like, you know,
Starting point is 01:07:45 Joe Lewis and Max Schmelling rematch. When, you know, the Nazis had their high command ringside at Yankee Stadium. And Joe Lewis, and Max Schmelling's a great guy. He was president of Coca-Cola into his 90s, and he wasn't aligned with that. But he was used as a symbol of that. And Joe Lewis, you know, the inferiority of this race versus the Master racing and all that.
Starting point is 01:08:06 And Joe Lewis knocked him out in one round, but was hitting him in the body. Like you would want to hit your worst enemy. And Schmelling was like screaming in pain, and he knocked him out in one round. That would have been a fun fight to call. I like it. You got the thing on you?
Starting point is 01:08:22 That was it. I'm good. I'm glad we agree on that Bud, that Bud Booth fight coming up. But you know what? It's going to take triple digits to get him out. He inside. Bud's going to fight again.
Starting point is 01:08:35 I'm going to say he's too competitive. Bud is too competitive. And the boots, the reason, listen, if this was two or three years ago, who do you like, Bud? I don't have to think about it that hard. Right. But even so, I'm never picking against Bud until I see it. Right.
Starting point is 01:08:51 But if you've been off a couple of years and you're 40, and you're in with an explosive athletic puncher. Switch hitter. Switch who knows what he's doing, too. Boots is a special talent, offensive talent. Yes. You know, how much defense is going to get mixed in? What's going to happen when he runs across another superfighter
Starting point is 01:09:11 who he's never had to fight so far? We'll see. But that's a dangerous fight for a 40-year-old who's been off for a couple years. And that makes it, in my view, much closer to a 50-50 kind of fight than it would have been a couple years ago. Well, it needs to happen soon because Bud says he's about to be 39, so it needs to happen this year. Boots is getting ready to fight soon, isn't he?
Starting point is 01:09:31 Yeah, he's fighting to, like, see, I try to explain to people the way belts really work in boxing. Yeah. Think about college football before there was a playoff system. Right. So you might win a prestigious bowl game, and that's something. That's, you know, one of these sanctioning body belts. That doesn't mean you won the Natty. Right.
Starting point is 01:09:49 Right. Right. So when you hear, like, Mani Pachia won titles in eight divisions, yeah, he won bowl games in eight divisions. Yeah. He won the natty in four. Right. Right. That's the record. Right.
Starting point is 01:10:00 There are only three guys. Bud, Manny, and you could argue Floyd. Right. But I would argue Floyd's only got three because he made Canello come down below the weight limit. Right. But you could argue that either way. Right.
Starting point is 01:10:12 In the history of boxing. Right. That's it who really won four Natties. Yeah. You know what I mean? Okay, I got it. Max, appreciate you, bro. All the best good call tomorrow night, man.
Starting point is 01:10:22 We're going to be in attendance. We'll go see if Ryan can back up all that talk because he's been talking a big one. It's going to be a good action fight. Okay. I like that. We like action. Appreciate it.
Starting point is 01:10:31 Max Kellerman. Yes, sir. That concludes this episode of Nightcap. I want to thank you guys for joining us. Make sure you're a tune in to catch this fight tomorrow night. Paramount. Paramount Plus, excuse me. We're off tonight.
