Sales coach Dan Rashan from No Broke Months for Salespeople offers a fresh perspective on how we experience the world around us.
Dan explains that our initial thoughts about experiences are universal, but our unique reactions and choices set us apart.
It's not the events themselves but our responses that shape our lives.
In the new No Broke Months for Salespeople episode, listen to Dan's practical advice on embracing life's experiences with a mindset that empowers you to grow.
We're going to talk about life. We're going to talk about how you experience life and then
how you can take that experience of life and get a better experience of life life is a series of stuff
that happens to us okay we all agree that there's stuff that not happens to us the stuff that
happens sometimes it happens to us sometimes it just happens when we agree that that's true of
life like there's circumstance like right now the circumstances Dan's holding up this eraser.
So there's circumstance and that circumstance is sometimes good,
sometimes bad, but whatever it is, it's circumstance.
Would we all agree to that?
Like right now the circumstances, my board is a little wonky
okay so if we sit there and we do agree to that why don't you get out a pen and paper if you could
please at the top of that pen and paper once you write down the word circumstance
so what's the circumstance tell me what a circumstance is interest rates okay interest rates are circumstance they are what they are correct fantastic Tell me what a circumstance is. Interest rates. Okay. Interest rates are a circumstance. They are what they are. Correct.
Fantastic. What else is a circumstance?
Job loss.
Job loss. Job loss is a circumstance. Is that what you said, John? Job loss?
Yes.
Job loss is a circumstance. Fantastic. What else is a circumstance?
New job.
New job. That's a circumstance. What else is a circumstance what's something that's that's
less you know just sort of weird like is a circumstance that i got a miss pac-man back there
with a circumstance that i have glasses on that i'm holding up my expo magic crayon those are all
it's just what it is so when we when there is a circumstance, how do we perceive that circumstance?
How do we know? How do we know? Like, how do our brains know that this is a circumstance that I'm holding up my marker right now?
How do you know? How do you know that I'm holding up marker right now?
I can see it. You can see it. Great. I'm describing
a black dry erase Expo low odor chisel marker. It's about maybe six inches long. It has Expo on
it. It's got a cap. And on the back of it, it's got these little ridges. Now, how do you
know that I'm holding an
Expo marker?
You're describing it.
And how do you know?
I'm picturing it in my head.
Picturing in your head, right? But how
do you know to picture that in your head?
Verbal cues.
I'm giving you verbal clues from your
perspective what are you doing with those verbal clues how about this guys you're hearing it
would you guys all agree that you heard me describe it so the first time you saw it the
second time you heard it now let's say you're in the room with me. How do I know? How do I know that this is a crayon that I'm holding right now?
Because it's in my hand.
So right now I feel it.
But here I smell it.
I said you're basically saying our senses.
Oh my goodness.
Kathy gets a gold star.
Okay.
So first I see it.
Then I hear it.
Then I feel it.
Now the one I'm going to leave out is taste it, right? I
suppose I could chomp into that and taste it, and that would be an unpleasant experience.
Okay, so every single circumstance that we have in our lives, we perceive it through our five senses.
Does that make sense to you guys? You follow me now?
Every single thing in our lives,
every single circumstance,
we sense it through one of our five senses.
It's the only way that it goes from the outside world
into your inner world.
Now, when that comes into your inner world,
the first thing, whether it's conscious or subconscious,
that you're going to be able to perceive is a thought.
So it's going to come into your world,
and then there's going to be a thought about it.
As it comes into your world and you have a thought about it,
again, that could be conscious thought or subconscious thought.
Like if I smelled it and I just smell it, that's still my,
my brain is still clicking. It's still working.
It's still observing the smell. I don't necessarily have to say, Oh,
I think that that smells good or smells bad. And by the way, it smells bad.
So our world is circumstance.
Stuff happens, like interest rates.
But stuff also happens, like Dan's holding up a marker.
And then you perceive it through your five senses.
You see it.
You touch it.
You taste it.
You hear it.
And what's the fifth one?
What did I miss? See, touch, taste, you smell it.
Did I say smell it? But you know what the five senses are. So you observe it through your five
senses. Okay. Then you have a thought about it. Conscious or subconscious. Then I have a feeling
about it. Let's use Diana's. Interest rates are higher than what they were three years ago.
Is that a circumstance?
Absolutely.
Interest rates are higher than they were three years ago.
That is a circumstance.
Then you have a thought about it.
What types of thoughts could you have about that?
Playing around with each other. There's something beeping in my background. I got to thought about it. What types of thoughts could you have about that? Playing around with each other.
There's something beeping in my background.
I got to go adjust it.
Rocky, you're in charge.
I want Rocky, for you to tell Rocky interest rates,
what types of thoughts could you have about interest rates?
Whether or not they can afford to,
they would be able to afford to pay.
Yeah, okay, awesome.
What other thoughts could you have about the
interest rates? You could think
the interest rates are not good enough
for you to buy now.
So that's a thought
you could have about that. Now, if you have that
thought, Scott,
what types of feelings do you think you may have about
that? Well, you probably have
somewhat negative feelings
or doubtful, discouraging
maybe.
Okay. Right. So you see
you have a circumstance and then
you have a thought and then you have a feeling.
By the way,
when I started today and I said
I'm going to teach you
how you can have a better life
before I teach you how to have a better life I got to teach you how you can have a better life. Before I teach you how to have a better life, I've got to teach you what life is.
That is what your life is right there.
I just described to you your entire being.
So you hear me often talk about you're a spiritual being manifested in a human condition.
This is your spiritual being and how your spiritual being interacts with the outside world.
Your spiritual being of the outside world, you're driving down the road.
There's a circumstance, a squirrel crosses the road.
That's a circumstance.
You're driving in between the lines.
That's a circumstance.
You have thoughts subconscious and consciously, and you have feelings about everything.
About everything. thoughts subconscious and uh and uh consciously and you have feelings about everything about everything so now what did you say about the interest rates what was the thing i asked you
to hold on to you could ask the seller to give money to buy down the interest rate for the buyer. Perfect. So now you can take an action.
Asking the seller to be able to buy down on the interest rates
is an action you could take.
Is that true?
Now let's say you took that action of asking the seller
to buy down on the interest rates.
What comes next?
The seller agrees or disagrees. The seller agrees or disagrees.
The seller agrees or disagrees.
You get a result.
So the first three here are your life.
The second two are what you do or not do
and the result that you get from whatever you do or don't do.
Okay? This is about everything in your life. This is about real estate. This is about brushing your
teeth. This is about, you got to create your own calm right here. Okay? Anytime that I'm experiencing
stress, I get up my little think your own calm, and I do an exercise. Everything's a story. You
are a story. I am a story. This is your life. This is what you do about your life. Now you're
in control about what you do about your life and you're in control over here. Now that we understand
what life is, now we can go into how to have a better life.
