You're listening to No Broke Months for Salespeople Podcast.
In this episode of the No Broke Months for Salespeople podcast, Dan Rochon shares one of the most personal stories of his life, telling his 12-year-old daughter about his divorce and the powerful business lesson that came from it.
He reveals how fear often feels worse than reality, why delaying hard decisions creates more pain, and how bold action in business can lead to breakthroughs beyond imagination.
A few years ago, I was awake all night, heart racing, and kept asking myself, how was I going to tell my daughter that, my daughter, Maggie, that her mom and I were going to get a divorce.
She was 12 years old, and, you know, to be honest, I know it wasn't going to be a surprise to her.
I mean, I've been sleeping in the guest room right on the other side of this wall here for, you know, more than a year at this point.
And, you know, but it didn't make it easier.
You see, I mean, I love my daughter more than anything else in the world, you know, maybe except for my sobriety.
No matter how much we want to be able to make it, you know, make it work for Maggie, it was, it was terrifying.
What she was going to be like if she was her, I didn't know, you know, I had this doubt in my head as like, you know, repeating the patterns of my, you know, my parents life.
And, you know, I just had this weight, this, this sense of tension that just over top of me.
And I'll never forget that night before having that conversation with Maggie.
This point in my career, my business I picked up and, you know, things were going well on the surface, you know, but behind the scenes, you know, I was just pretending.
You know, my ex-wife and I for years, we had put on a unified front professionally and publicly.
But on the inside, it was inauthentic, you know, it wasn't real.
You know, so at the time, my ex and I, we were pretending to be business partners.
We were, you know, public image was Dan and Tracy.
And it just wasn't real.
You know, and so finally, the moment came.
And Tracy and I, we sat outside by the pool.
And I'm alleged, and I knew it was time.
And so it was Tracy.
It was myself.
It was Maggie.
And I just remember, I just took this deep breath.
I said, Maggie, I love you.
Your mom and I were getting a divorce.
And I didn't know what to expect.
I was imagining a heartbreak.
I just didn't know.
And she just looked up at me.
She says, okay.
And it was, it was that was, that was it.
Okay.
And, you know, I remember looking at it.
I said, well, sweetie, are you okay?
She said, yes, daddy.
Yeah, I love you and I love mommy.
It's okay.
And so all this fear that I had built up,
it just vanished in like an instant.
Maggie was okay.
And at that moment,
The only thing that matter was that she was happy.
She was good to go.
I share this story with you because sometimes life throws us these moments where fear takes over.
We worry.
We stress.
We build up anxiety.
And then the reality, it turns out to be completely different.
Have you ever been so afraid to take a step that you delayed it?
I know I was.
I know that that divorce should have been years before.
And, you know, and I, I do care for my ex.
And I do definitely love the family.
But we held on to it for way too long.
So maybe for you, it's, you know, maybe it's not personal like what I'm showing with you.
Maybe it's about your business.
Maybe you're, you know, you're delaying launching a new product or raising your prices or just reaching out to that client that you thought may reject you.
You hesitate.
I get it.
We all do that.
But what if that very step that you're afraid of?
could lead to something amazing.
See, the life that we have today,
and it's a different life than what we had before,
as an inauthentic family,
as now we actually have a whole family
where we're different.
My ex lives in a different place,
but it works.
It works.
So just like telling my daughter about the divorce,
and it was freaking terrifying to me.
Just like that,
the outcome of that was completely different
than what I ever expected.
So what if that,
step that you're afraid to take in your business could lead to success beyond
imagination look I get it fear it's a powerful thing but embracing it facing it
head-on can open up doors that you didn't even know were there I want you to
think about Richard Branson for example Richard Branson launched version
Atlantic with things that no airline had ever considered they had on-board bars
and entertainment was a completely new kind of experience.
Richard Branson took risk, he defied the norms.
And now look, Virch is not just an airline, it's music, space tourism, telecommunication.
His bold moves transformed industries and it all started with one step.
He embraced the fear and he went up against the grain.
You have the same power in your business, in your life.
thing that you're afraid of right now, maybe it's time to reach out to that potential client
that you've been hesitating in contact. Or maybe it's time to try that new marketing strategy
that you've been putting off because it feels risky. Check it out. You do not have to play
it safe all the time because sometimes those ideas, those ideas that you have that you're
not acting on, sometimes those can be your biggest breakthroughs. Take it.
bold steps in business can sometimes feel like you're on the edge of a cliff. But once you take that
leap, you just might find out where your success lies. So there's one thing I want you to take from
this conversation, from this thing that I'm sharing with you, is I want you to embrace the unexpected
journey. I want you to take that path that maybe you're afraid of because it might just be the one
that brings you the biggest rewards. So let's take that first step together.
Let's go find some business.
Let's go watch as the momentum builds.
I'm going to be here to guide you through it.
And in the upcoming steps, I'm going to show you exactly the steps to take.
But first, you got to take the first step.
