Real estate coach Dan Roshan of No Broke Months for Real Estate Agents talks about
people's incorrect perception of real estate agents. In this episode, Dan talks about how
people have a negative view of this profession and shares tips on changing people's image of
you by doing these things. Learn more about these tips in this new No Broke Months for Real Estate real estate agent episode. Let's talk about how our friends, family, and others may perceive us,
right? So first of all, let's get the reality of like how hard of a freaking profession this is.
We already know that this is one of the world's most demanding jobs, demanding professions, yet would we agree that maybe our friends and family may not
view what you do as credible or may have a negative perception of it sometimes, or maybe
we believe that that's the case? Why is it that they have those negative stereotypes and what is
it that they believe? They believe that we're just simply showing homes and collecting commissions.
Would you say that that may be a general perception of the public? Would you say that maybe going on HGTV and seeing the
reality real estate agent shows put our industry in a light that's not accurate? They may have also
had a bad experience with a real estate agent because the unfortunate thing is that not all
real estate agents are trained.
And in fact, most are not. In fact, most get into this business and they just wing it. And they just
either figure it out on themselves or they get inadequate training. How seldom does a real estate
agent get the opportunity to learn the entire process, like what we're learning here in the
CPI community, of every single step along the journey. It almost never happens.
Okay. And so that, so if we understand that then, what typically happens is that real estate agents
get involved and at the very best, they're smart at figuring it out. And more likely,
they'll never figure it out and they'll just wing it and they'll be reactive through the entire
process. And that's where you hear those conversations like, this
client sucks, this client did this, this client did that, the lender sucks, the title company sucks.
And instead of thinking like, well, maybe somebody in this conversation sucks, right? And so there's
so many bad experiences that the consumer have with real estate agents, and that could provide a negative
viewpoint. Additionally, because we are in a commission-based business, oftentimes the consumers,
the general public believes that we prioritize sales, we prioritize money over the client's
interest. Now, that's our starting point. We all agree that those are some of the common
misperceptions of what we do. So it's like the reality of it is the hardest freaking thing in
the world, yet the consumer thinks that it's the easiest thing. It's one of the reasons why so many
real estate agents, so many people get into our business and why so many people fail in our
business because they have this perception like, hey, that's easy money. And then they get into
like, this is hard. Like this is beyond hard. This is the hardest freaking thing that you could imagine.
Emotionally, intellectually, every single component of hard it is. It's hard financially.
It's hard in every single way that you can imagine. So let's talk about some ways that we can
realign the consumer's perspective to the reality of the value that you provide
and how much education, how much know-how, how much experience and resources that you have to
have to be able to provide them with an exceptional experience where you exceed their expectation.
Number one is to show your expertise. What are some ways that we can show your expertise? Number two, demonstrate your
success. Be professional. Be passionate. Educate them about the industry. Be patient. It may take
some time for your friends and family to understand and respect your career choice fully, yet over time
they will start to look at you as that professional expertise. So build a
reputation as an expert in your local real estate market by staying up to date with the trends,
with the market conditions and share your knowledge with others by writing articles
or giving talks and advice and that type of stuff. So what are your unique strengths,
skills and experiences that set you apart from others? Okay, so you could just take like, what is it that you do?
And then now let's reframe that into
what are the qualities of what you do
into a way that now we can communicate that to the world.
