In this episode, Dan talks about the fear of the unknown unknown in real estate sales. In this episode,
Dan talks about the fear of the unknown as a real estate agent and how to eliminate that fear.
Learn how to eliminate this fear in this new No Broke Months for Real Estate Agents episode.
So let's today talk about eliminate the unknown in real estate sales. So who here has ever gone
on a long distance journey? I would expect that probably all of us have gone on some sort of trip
at some point in our lives. Who here has ever stood next to a cliff, like on the edge of a
cliff? Maybe not like right on the edge, but pretty close to it. Yesterday, my daughter got me an Oculus
for my birthday present.
And so she says, dad, you gotta go
and you gotta play this game.
So I didn't know what the game was gonna be.
So here's the game.
It's called Walk the Plank.
I'm like, okay, Walk the Plank.
That doesn't sound too bad.
But then she has me, I got these Oculus on.
My little hand things here.
So I go and I go into the elevator and I press the button, Walk the Pl Oculus on, I got, you know, my little hand things here. So I go,
and I go into the elevator, I press the button, walk the plank, and I go up the elevator.
And then the elevator door opens, and I'm on a top of like 120 story building, walking a plank, and underneath of me is the city. Now I'm really standing on the floor. But I'm starting yelling,
like yelling like a little boy. I was yelling like a little
boy, right? Walking out on the plank and I'm safely out in my kitchen, right? Like a boom,
boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, right? And I'm like, no, uh-uh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
right? And it's literally just virtual reality. Okay. So, and I did fall. So if anybody wants
to know what it would be like to jump off of a building, not that I believe anybody would ever want to know what that's like. I had that experience
yesterday. It's not fun. It's not fun at all. So what do you guys think I was experiencing when
I walked out on that plank yesterday? Panic. Panic. Yeah. Panic, fear, anxiety. I'm perfectly
safe. Okay. I am perfectly safe. I'm in my kitchen. Literally,
I had to remind myself that I was in the kitchen. I had to take my feet and feel the floor.
I'm like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. This is just an illusion. If you've ever been in a
situation where you've been near a cliff, you probably felt that anxiety. You probably felt
that fear. Being a real estate agent, oftentimes, we have that anxiety. Oftentimes, we have that fear.
And it's a fear of the unknown. It's a fear of like, I don't know what my future is going to
bring. I know Dan tells me find my you know, find why I'm doing this, find my way and then go,
you know, go all in on my way, and have faith and I'll be able to then get a result.
I know that maybe your other mentors or your broker
or somebody's telling you to do that.
And that is true, yet it's still on now.
The same way as when I was in that Oculus,
like I knew I was perfectly safe,
but man, I was not comfortable.
So how do we eliminate that fear? You may be
understanding that your future is still being created right now. And it's a challenge to face
the unknown with an optimistic viewpoint because we can't see the future. And so we never really,
truly know if the actions that we take today are going to produce the results that we
want. We never, ever actually truly know that. And seldom do we have certainty about the outcome of
the decisions that we make. What do agents experience? What's the experience that you have
when you have the unknown? Same as what I had, anxiety, fear, and maybe even a physical reaction,
like a physical sweat or physical like, oh my fear, and maybe even a physical reaction, like, you know, like a physical
sweats or physical, like, oh my goodness, like, what is this? The most common emotion that comes
up when we have an unpredictable potential threat that might occur in the future is anxiety. And
this uncertainty that underlies that often makes us make bad decisions. However, you can navigate your sales career
when you believe that you have control over your lives
and we can influence the outcome of those events.
So our belief system can help us to downplay
our sense of risk and vulnerability
and allow for us to navigate through our careers.
So just like when I'm out on that ledge last night,
walking the ledge in the Oculus, I'm 120 stories up. And I'm like, wait, I'm perfectly safe. I can
literally feel the floor underneath my feet. This isn't real. We have to remind ourselves
that even though there's uncertainty of the future, we can eliminate the unknown. And so
how do we do that? Eliminating the unknown is, you know, it's a pretty broad concept, right?
If you look in science and you look in research, what do scientists do to be able to eliminate
the unknown? They collect data. They conduct experiments. They observe. They help to build
the knowledge about the world and understand
how things work. You know, we just went through a pandemic and the scientists had to figure out
how can we create a vaccine? And they created several vaccines and they had to be able to
observe to be able to do that. So when I started in real estate sales, just like those scientists who observe others, I had to study
the models of success to be able to derive that blind faith. So be able to eliminate the unknown
in sales. The first thing that you have to do is you have to say, well, let's go back to that trip
that we're using as an example. And you want to go from one end of the country to the other.
The easiest way to do that, I mean, now we have GPS and we've got our phones and everything, right? But let's say we didn't have
that access to your phone to tell you where to go. Let's say Waze did not exist. Then what would
you want to do? You would want to sit there and say, well, has there ever been somebody who's
went from Washington, D.C. to Seattle? And the answer to that is yes. What route did they take? So this time's just like
that time. Has there ever been somebody who's been licensed for this long, who looks like me,
same origin, same race, same heritage, same culture, same everything, who worked in an
environment that's similar to mine, meaning small city, big city, a city based in technology
for the economy, a city based in industry for the economy, in service for the economy,
in entertainment for the economy, whatever the case may be. Has there ever been a person like
that who was successful in real estate sales? And if the answer to that question is yes,
now you've got the ability to be able to say, now you've got your roadmap.
