Why your goals seem to be out of reach. Sales coach Dan Rashan of No Broke Months for Salespeople
talks about why you can't still achieve your goals and what to do about it. Whether hitting those target sales numbers, expanding your client base,
or securing repeat business, Dan uncovers why some goals feel out of reach despite all the
planning and drive. Learn how to get unstuck from your goals and achieve them in this new
No Broke Months for Salespeople episode. I want to understand how people could set goals the proper way,
smart and written, and not achieve them.
So this is the author.
By the way, the author of this paper is one of my coaches, John Williamson.
You may have met John.
He's a gentleman who lives in Scotland who is one of my coaches.
So John says, prior to creating the eight steps to guarantee a goal
achievement, I want to understand how people could set goals the proper way, smart and written. So
smart, for those that you may not know, is specific, measurable, actionable, relatable,
based in time. In my search for answers, I made a list of all the reasons people fail to achieve
goals I could think of, and believe it or not, they all boil down to one single fact. Not enough of the correct action was taken. If you think
about it, all success follows the same cause and effect relationship. So in other words,
and he puts this in big bowls, input activity equals output results. So input activity equals
output results. Okay, so it's really that simple. You do the activity,
you get the results. So if it's that simple, why is it so rare for people to achieve what they set
out to do? They know what action to take, and if they don't, they can easily find out, but they
don't take enough of it. Psychology tells us that people are only motivated to take action by one of
two things, either to avoid pain or to gain pleasure.
So pleasure or pain.
Now, remember that.
Just put that off to the side.
We're going to use that in sales at a different time.
So right now we're using that about goal setting.
Yet that pleasure and pain dynamic is something that we'll use at a different time, okay?
But for today, we're going to use it for goal setting.
Knowing this, the obvious reasons for not taking action would be the current situation
is not painful enough or that they don't expect to gain pleasure.
So I'm going to sort of summarize the next section of this, of what John says.
John goes on and he talks about weight loss.
And he talks about, okay, hey, I want to stop being fat.
And the reality of it is, is I go and I go to the gym,
and there's little results. And I eat well, and there's little results. And the challenge of,
let's use weight loss, for example, is that the results are so gradual and so slow that you get
no feedback. So what John states is another study about weight loss, where what they did was they
took somebody who was overweight today, and they did a composite of who that person would
be, somebody who was overweight and smoked cigarettes, for them to get healthy, to stop
smoking cigarettes, and for them to stop gaining weight.
And they did a composite of themselves 10 years from now, and they did the automated,
the AI, and says, here's what you're going to look like 10 years from now, and they did the automated, the AI, it says,
here's what you're going to look like 10 years from now. That one thing got this person in the
study to be able to stop smoking and eat healthily. Okay, so they took somebody who was a little bit
overweight, smoked cigarettes, they said, boom, dude, here's who you're going to be 10 years from
now. And it was a stark contrasting difference because they could see like,
oh my goodness, I can't see that day, day, day, day, day, day, day, day, day. But if I could fast
forward 10 years and see who I'm creating, I don't want to be that person. So in goal setting,
I can help you guys with the activities with, hey, what's your goals? This is the activities
that you need to take. We can break it down how many conversations per day
that you need to have, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
But all of that's meaningless
if you don't put a vehicle around that such that
you now actually do the activity
because we've already stated, you know, in John's paper,
he already stated that setting the goals,
the actions, the activity that we need to take
is really relatively simple.
And it's simply input activity equals output results.
