On today's episode of The Real Foodology Podcast.
We're all looking for this, the magic technology.
And the irony is it, you don't need magic technology.
You just need the basics.
And I reinforce with people that self-love is not selfish.
I saw a quote that I loved, which said,
self-love is giving the world the best of you,
not what's left of you.
Hi friends, welcome back. You're listening to the Real Foodology Podcast with your host, Courtney Swan. You may recognize today's guest,
Katherine Arnston. She was on, I don't remember exactly when, last year sometime, but she is the
founder of Energy Bits, which are algae tablets. They are Chlorella and Spirulina.
And I had her back on because not only did you guys love the episode and was it absolutely
fascinating, but she wanted to talk about a couple of new things that she has been working on with
Energy Bits. So it turns out that Spirulina has a massive effect on our mitochondria. And this is so fascinating. And if
you guys don't remember everything that we went over about as far as spirulina and chlorella goes
in the first episode, well, one, obviously go back and listen to it. But also we do a little
bit of an overview and a skin review in the beginning. And just everything that this woman
says is so fascinating. She really, really knows her stuff. She's been studying this for a long time. And also she reveals in the episode how old she is. She
looks incredible. Like I'm sold. I'm already, I was already ordering energy bits because I just
ran out recently. Immediately when I finished recording this episode, I was already ordering
it online being like, damn, I gotta, I gotta get on the monthly subscription. I gotta be taking this all the time.
And after this episode, you guys will completely understand my energy and why I was like, okay,
got to get on these again. So fascinating. And yeah, I mean, I didn't even really have any
many questions for her because she just, I kind of just let her go and talk about all the fascinating things that there is to know about algae. And she also talked about a really cool
clinical health trial that they're doing with the energy bits right now. So yeah, anyways, well,
I'm going to not bore you guys to the intro anymore and let's just get straight into the
episode with Catherine. As always, if you guys could take a moment to rate and review the show, it means so much to me. I appreciate your support more than you know. If
you guys want to share the episode on Instagram and tag me at real foodology, it would mean so
much to me. Anyway, you can support the show and helping me get more listeners is amazing. And I
appreciate the support. So with that, I hope you guys love the episode. that you're going to know this is by doing lab work. And it's incredibly important
that we have this information because we don't want to just blindly supplement because we can
end up doing more harm than good. Because if you already have really high levels of vitamin D,
you don't want to be taking more vitamin D. So this is why I am a huge fan of honed vitamins.
They're bio-individualized vitamins tailored to your exact needs and exactly what's going
on in your body.
It is so simple.
They send you a test kit that you can do from home.
All you have to do is clip a little piece of your hair, send it into their lab for analysis.
And then from there, they're able to tailor your vitamins specifically to what's going
on in your body.
Their metabolic test reveals the status of 29 minerals, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, zinc, iron, selenium, and boron, just to
name a couple. It also reports on eight heavy metals, including lead, aluminum, and mercury.
And from there, you have a personalized supplement that is sent directly to your door
based on what is going on in your body specifically. They also have standalone
products that help you when your body is in need of extra support,
like their immune defense,
essential for any upcoming summer travel,
or they also have a hormone elixir pack,
which supports healthy hormone balance
and systemic rejuvenation.
If you guys would like to try honed vitamins,
go to livehoned.com and use code realfoodology for 15% off.
Again, that's livehoned, L-I-V-E-H-O-N-E-D.com. Use code realfoodology,
and you're going to save 15%. There's nothing more comforting than a warming cup of hot chocolate
before bed. I know coming from me, that may sound a little counterintuitive because you're probably
thinking, how is hot chocolate healthy for you? But I've got a little hack for you, and it's
called Organifi's Gold Chocolate. First and foremost, the most important thing here, it has one gram of total sugar in it. So you get the satisfaction of having a comforting,
cozy little sweet treat after dinner without all the loaded sugar. And it's like with this one,
you get a twofer, a two for one, because you also have the added bonus of things like turmeric,
lemon balm, turkey tail. There's also magnesium and there's reishi in there. So whenever
I drink this at night before bed, it gets me really sleepy and ready to wind down and it really
improved my sleep. There's also a blend in there that helps with digestion. There's acacia, cinnamon,
ginger, black pepper, and turmeric. So if you have this after dinner, it's also going to help
your digestion and it's going to get you ready for bed. My favorite thing about Organifi products outside of them being all organic,
they're also glyphosate residue free. If you have listened to this podcast long enough or
paid attention to my Instagram, you know that glyphosate is a huge, huge concern for all of us
in this country. Glyphosate is a known carcinogen that is being sprayed. It's an herbicide that's
being sprayed on all of our crops that are not organic. And it's also being leaked into organic products as well, organic foods. So
this glyphosate residue freeze stamp is so incredibly important. And it's one of my
favorite things about Organifi outside of their actual products, which I love.
If you want to try this hot cocoa from Organifi or any of their other products that I mentioned
today, make sure that you go to Organifi.com slash realfoodology and you are going to save 20% on your order. Again,
that's O-R-G-A-N-I-F-I.com slash realfoodology. Catherine, thank you so much for coming back on.
I know everyone loved the last episode that we did together. And to give, I guess, people a little bit of an overview,
let's go into algae and just kind of give an overview
of what algae is and what it does and what energy bits are.
Yeah, you got it.
So welcome everybody and welcome back to those who heard the first run.
As you know, I'm the founder, CEO,
and I'm also the chief scientific officer of our company, Energy Bits.
I call myself a citizen scientist because I don't technically, I don't have a PhD, but I have spent 13 years digging into PubMed.
And I've probably read about 3000 articles now about algae and the biology, metabolic health and connected the dots in a way that you're going to find out today.
Why algae is the missing link
for your longevity, your health, particularly your brain health. And we're going to do a bit
of a deep dive into mitochondria. But first, let me give you just a quick little overview. So you
know where we're going. It's always nice to have a map, right? So algae was the first life on earth
almost 4 billion years ago. And I tell people, you know, you're only the first life once.
So there's something special about it.
And before algae, there was no life on Earth.
It was just gas and water.
And algae, as you find out, releases oxygen, which populates the Earth and allowed larger life forms to grow and eventually us.
But algae beat us by about 3 billion years.
So it's certainly been part of our genealogy.
And as you're going to also find out, your mitochondria, which we're going to do a deep
dive on, actually evolved directly from cyanobacteria, which is algae, spirulina. So
their family. I mean, honestly, it's crazy. So algae is a food category.
There's actually two main types of algae, macroalgae and microalgae.
Macroalgae, which we're not talking about today, but I'll go over what it is,
is that stringy stuff that washes up on shore, also known as seaweed.
And it's called seaweed because it's only in the sea.
And it is important
because it has lots of fiber and iodine but it has virtually no nutrition but it's still good for you
what we're talking about is called microalgae which is microscopic in size like a million of
these could fit on the head of a pin that's how tiny they are and they are everywhere they're in
the sea but they're also in the lakes, the rivers,
the streams, the soil, your aquarium, absolutely everywhere. And in total contrast to macroalgae,
they either have zero fiber or virtually no fiber. Macroalgae is almost all fiber. And they
have the most concentrated nutrition in the universe. Even we have a quote from NASA that
says one gram of algae has the same nutrition
as a thousand grams of vegetables, one to a thousand. And that's why, as you're going to
find out why they're so powerful for you. And they're also, they come in little tablets that
you can swallow and chew. So they're also effortless nutrition. So microalgae, there's
tens of thousands of strains of microalgae, but the two that most people are
familiar with and the two that are harvested as food crops are spirulina and chlorella. And I'm
showing a picture of a spirulina farm and a chlorella farm. Now, the important thing for you
to know, again, is that spirulina and chlorella are farmed. That means they're grown in fresh water
like other vegetables. Spirulina is a blue-green
algae. It's called a blue-green algae because it has two pigments in it. The blue one has a long
word. It's called phycocyanin, spelled P-H-Y-C-O-C-Y-I-N-N, and we'll give you more detail
on that. And the green pigment is chlorophyll. So spirulina is a blue-green algae, but there are
other blue-green algaes in the ocean. So when you read about a blue-green algae closing your
favorite beach, we're not talking about spirulina. Spirulina, again, is harvested in fresh water.
Ours is grown in triple-filtered spring mountain water. And the reason why that's important is
because algae will absorb whatever's in the water. That's why they tell you never go and eat or get close to an algae bloom
the algae shows up here's the great thing about algae it shows up because whenever there's toxins
because it kills bacteria so poor algae gets the bum rap when it shows up as an algae bloom on your
beach but it's because you it's more visible but
it showed up to kill bacteria because there were toxins there you can't see the toxins but you can
see the algae bloom and it's toxic because it's absorbing everything that's in there so we ours
we do micro toxin testing we do third party lab testing on all the nutrients all the you know make
sure there's no metals and our algae never has any microtoxins because it's grown in triple filtered spring mountain water. So,
so anyway, spirulina, blue-green algae, and we'll talk about the benefits in a second. The other
algae we call chlorella, which is a green algae, and it only has the pigment called chlorophyll.
I'm going to show a picture of the tablets. The spirulina is a much darker color because it has
the blue pigment in it as well as the green and chlorella is a green algae now spirulina um and
you know when we grow it as I mentioned we grow it in fresh water then we just air dry it without
high heat which is also important because all the other algae companies use high heat to dry it
because they're lower priced higher volume so they need to get to market fast but that kills all the other algae companies use high heat to dry it because they're lower priced higher volume so they need to get to market fast but that kills all the enzymes the pigments lots of the nutrients
and we don't use high heat so you get the real deal with our stuff and then we just press them
into these little tablets that you can swallow or chew now here's the great thing about the
the tablets each tablet has the same nutrition using that quote from NASA as an entire plate of
vegetables. So this is why I got so into algae because when I was teaching plant-based nutrition
to people trying to get people to eat more vegetables, I found out there were too many
roadblocks. They were heavy to carry home from the grocery store. They took too long to clean,
to cook, to eat. They gave people gas. They went bad quickly.
Their kids wouldn't eat them.
Their husbands wouldn't eat them.
I mean, it's truly a disaster.
And by the way, our soils are so damaged that even if you are eating vegetables every day,
you are not getting the nutrition that you need to be healthy.
And because algae is so concentrated with nutrition, It's truly the answer.
And because it comes in these little tablets
that you can swallow or chew, it's effortless.
We have mothers who give them to their kids now
and they never, the kids love them
because now they don't have to eat their vegetables.
Guys love them.
By the way, vegetables, as you know, go bad quickly.
You throw out half of that,
whether it's cooked beforehand or not.
But our tablets have a three-year shelf life, and frankly, they never go bad.
So effortless nutrition.
And ours are concentrated, so concentrated that, again, I use that quote that we sell them in large bags of tablets.
One bag has the same nutrition as 551 pounds of vegetables.
Wow.
This is efficient nutrition. Plus there's no,
no waste, nothing. You don't have to clean them, cook them. I mean, honestly, you, you could live
on them forever because they even have the same nutrient profile as mother's breast milk, at least
spirulina does. So, so there you go. If you go away from this podcast, knowing nothing else,
except the fact that algae
in tablet form is the most concentrated, at least ours is the safest, purest food in the world. It
is a food. We call our tablets bits because they're bits of food. Nothing else in there.
100% spirulina or 100% chlorella. Nothing else. You want whole foods in your diet. Algae is a whole
food. And what I love so much about these tablets, and you've mentioned this before,
but I really want to reiterate this. It is so simple to take them every day. I swallow mine
down with water. I know you've mentioned before that you chew them sometimes. You can throw them
in a smoothie if you want to and blend it up, but it's so simple to take. And also I love this fact. I
think this is so cool for people to hear. Chlorella is often called nature's deodorant because it
internally basically cleanses you and it helps with if you struggle with BO and sweating,
it's actually called an internal deodorant. And then I want to know if this is true.
And you know why? It's because it kills bacteria. Oh, that's amazing. Bad breath is from bacteria.
B-O, bacteria.
In your gut, your poop smells, bacteria.
Bacteria, wow.
So chlorella has been used for decades for IBS, Crohn's disease.
It's the chlorophyll that's killing the bacteria.
Chlorella algae is called chlorella because of the chlorophyll.
Chlorella, right?
And we'll talk about that in a minute.
But thank you for mentioning that because the equine industry has used chlorella and spirulina for 50 years for the horses.
So they perform better.
Their coats are shinier.
Their breath is clearer so and i didn't mention at the beginning but asians have been using spirulina and chlorella
for also like 70 years 19 and the reason you don't know about algae is because none of it
virtually none of it is grown here 99 of it is grown in China or Japan or we grow ours in Taiwan. And 99% of it
is consumed there. And the Japanese do not leave their house without chlorella every day. They
don't take supplements. And what I want people to know is the Japanese have been studied forever
for having the best longevity, lowest cancer rates, lowest obesity rates, and great skin and hair.
And they take chlorella and spirulina every single day.
And so I'm here to tell you, why should they be the only ones enjoying the benefits?
And I didn't mention this at the start, but I will now.
It's not that this stuff hasn't been scientifically
documented. In fact, it is the most scientifically papered food in the world. There's almost 100,000
studies documenting the health benefits, we're going to talk about some of them today,
of spirulina and chlorella. There's about 60,000. That is a big number. And these reports are in
PubMed. They're in medical libraries all around the world. Some have been done in America. Some have been done in India. Some have been done in Poland. I mean, they're done all over the world. But the thing is, scientists like to talk to other scientists and they don't know how to explain these complex things to consumers. And that's why I call myself a citizen scientist, because I didn't come from
a science background. So I know what it feels like not to know science. But I taught myself
the science. And I personally have read at least 3000 of these articles. And I can tell you without
a doubt that algae is the real deal. It just hasn't been explained properly. The quality has
been poor and no one's packaged it in a way or focused on education, which is what we do.
So I feel like Santa Claus delivering like the best pony in the world because whatever reason you start taking the algae for, it will help you with other things.
Maybe you want to clear up your skin.
Well, you're going to have better digestion.
Or maybe you want more energy. Well, you're going to have more brain power or maybe you want to lose
weight. You're going to end up smelling better, looking better. Yeah, all the above. And your
brain's going to work better. And that's what I was really excited about bringing back on today
is to talk about some of the research that you have seen with the mitochondria and what it does for our mitochondria. And just to give people a
little overview, the mitochondria is also called the power, it's the powerhouse of the cell. It's
called basically our battery. It's what powers everything in our body. It's what gives us energy.
And then I'll let you kind of take it from there. So here's the thing. So spirulina,
just to give you a little quick overview, it gives you energy, which is why we call it Energy Bits.
It also builds your skin.
We have a brand called Beauty Bits.
But the energy is both immediate, and it's for your brain and for your body, but it's also long-term because it generates what's called ATP, which is the form of cellular energy that is created by your
mitochondria. And this ATP is what fuels you for everything. You're thinking, you're walking,
you're talking. ATP is everything. So your mitochondria, which makes it for you, is
everything. And we're going to talk about that in a second. The other algae is chlorella. As I
mentioned, it is a wellness and detoxing algae
because it has the highest chlorophyll in the world. We call ours recovery bits. So it helps
you recover from your day. Two things before I get into the mitochondria to help you understand
the difference between the two of them. Spirulina, because it's so nourishing and energizing,
I make the analogy that it's sort of like room service at a hotel. It gives you everything you need for the day. And chlorella, because it's so cleansing, it's kind of like housekeeping. It cleans out all
the junk in your trunk. And that's what you get when you're at a hotel. So most people take the
spirulina in the morning or the afternoon because that's when you want energy and you're hungry.
And most people take the chlorella before bed because that's when your
body goes through a detox or a pericycle is when you're sleeping. The other thing, and we're going
to dig into this now, is the spirulina, which is energy bits, is best for mitochondrial health.
We're going to dig into that in a second. And chlorella, which builds your gut and immune system, and your immune system is mostly
in your gut, is best for your immune health. So spirulina for mitochondria health, chlorella for
immune health. And when you have those two things working for you, you are good to go. You'll live
as long as Dave Asprey, which he plans to live like over 100 years, and so do I. Okay, so mitochondria,
as you mentioned, they're the powerhouse of the cells. And I tell people, everything is determined,
your longevity, your energy, your health, your wellness is determined by mitochondria. The
trouble is, as you age, your mitochondria get damaged, and they die. So as you get older, you have fewer of them.
And the few that are still there aren't working as well. And I'm going to explain to you what
happens and why that's happening and why algae is the answer. But before I do that, consider
the cellular energy that's made by mitochondria for you, like money. You know, when you have more
money, you can do more things and you have more
choices. That's the perfect life, right? When you have more cellular energy from your mitochondria,
you can do more things and you have more choices. So think of cellular energy as money. You want as
much as you can get so that you can do as much as you want. It's that
simple. So the problem is your poor little mitochondria, well, first of all, as I said,
they generate all the ATP, but it's actually, here's your cell and I'll show you a picture
of your cell and your nucleus. And these little peanut shaped things are your mitochondria.
And inside the mitochondria is where all the action is. And the kind of action that is happening is the generation
of the ATP. But what people don't know is that ATP, which is that cellular energy, a byproduct
are free radicals. So all that energy is releasing free radicals. And guess what? Your mitochondria
have their own DNA. There's only 37 of them compared to the 22,000 of your regular DNA,
but your mitochondria DNA are the controllers of everything that goes on in your mitochondria
and everywhere else. Think of them as, I say they're like air controllers
and so at an airport. So when your air controllers control everything that happens at the airport,
if they're not on their game, planes crash, right? And your mitochondria DNA aren't on their game,
your health crashes. So why is that happening? Because as you get older, as I mentioned, you have fewer mitochondria
and the ones that you do have get more damaged. Well, because there's all that free radicals
going on, your DNA of your mitochondria get damaged. One of the things that damages them,
well, there's two ways they get damaged. One is too many free radicals being produced. And the second thing is no way to remove the free radicals.
The first thing to reduce the free radicals
are to change your diet
and get rid of as many processed carbs as possible.
Sugar and processed carbs generate more free radicals.
It doesn't have to be a keto diet.
It could just reduce them. Intermittent fasting
is even better. Intermittent fasting and algae generate virtually zero free radicals. So that's
the best way to get your mitochondrial damage down. And they talk about people that live the
longest, they do lots of fasts. Well, guess what? That's because they have less free
radical damage of their mitochondria. Because when you're fasting, virtually nothing happens.
Algae has the same effect. So that's number one. Did you guys know that over 70% of sodium in the
diet is consumed from packaged and processed foods? When you adopt a whole foods diet,
you are eliminating or hopefully eliminating these processed foods. When you adopt a whole foods diet, you're eliminating or hopefully eliminating
these processed foods and therefore sodium from your diet. Now, the solution is not to reintroduce
processed foods in your diet, but by not replacing that sodium, you can actually negatively impact
your health and performance. If you guys listened to my episode, The Salt Fix with Dr. James Dinnick,
we learned that sodium is actually a really imperative mineral for the body. Sodium helps maintain fluid balance. It's an electrolyte, so it helps keep us hydrated. It also aids in
nerve impulses. It regulates blood flow and blood pressure. It's incredibly important. And if you're
eating a whole real food diet, chances are you're probably not getting enough sodium. Also, this is
probably going to be a shock to hear, but if you are just drinking water without adding minerals
back into your water,
you're not actually hydrating.
My personal favorite way to stay hydrated
throughout the day is through drinking Element every day.
That's L-M-N-T.
It's a delicious tasting electrolyte drink mix
that has everything you need and nothing you don't.
So that means lots of salt.
There's no sugar in there.
It's formulated to help anyone with their electrolyte needs and is perfectly suited for people following keto, low carb and
paleo diets. It has a science backed electrolyte ratio, a thousand milligrams of sodium, 200
milligrams of potassium and 60 milligrams of magnesium. I drink one of these every single
morning. They have a ton of amazing, super delicious flavors. I know a lot of us listening
are avoiding natural flavors. So they also have an unflavored one, which is my personal favorite. I love to put it with lemon,
but if you want the flavored ones, they have a great variety of different flavors,
and they have given me an awesome offer to share with you guys. So you guys can claim a free
Element sample pack when you make a purchase through the link. The link is drinkelement,
that's L-M-N-T dot com slash realfoodology. And in the element sample pack, you're going to
get one packet of every flavor so that you can try all of them and see which one is your favorite.
I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do. Again, it's drink element.com slash real foodology.
That's drink l m n t.com slash real foodology. Did you guys know that in your mouth alone,
there's more bacteria than there is the entire
human population? How wild is that? And I know it sounds kind of gross, but it's really important
to know that these 38 trillion microbes living in, on, and around you are actually super critical
to your health. This is what we call your microbiome. And this non-human half of you
helps you with daily functions like digestion, support your gut brain
access, and they can even help affect your complexion. If you're struggling with skin issues,
maybe digestion issues, mood disorders, all of these can be connected directly to your microbiome
and the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut. Now we have both, we have good and bad
bacteria, but we always want a good, healthy balance of good bacteria.
And that's where taking a good pro and prebiotic
comes into play.
And while we talk a lot and hear a lot
about drinking kombucha, eating yogurt,
eating kimchi, kefir, et cetera,
these do contain probiotics,
but unfortunately the majority of those probiotics
never make it through our stomach acid
because they get burned off. So I really like Seeds Daily Synbiotic. If you struggle from any sort of skin
issue, maybe like psoriasis or eczema, or maybe chronic yeast infections, a daily probiotic like
Seed will really help you. And the reason why I'm super into Seeds specifically, it's a broad
spectrum two-in-one plant-based prebiotic and also 24-strain probiotic.
It's a proprietary formulation of 24 distinct probiotic strains in scientifically studied
dosages. I actually had the founder on my podcast, if you guys want to go back and listen to that
episode, it was absolutely fascinating. And all about what really makes Seed stand out from the
rest, you can hear all about the systemic benefits.
One of them specifically is their proprietary engineered two-in-one capsule that protects the probiotics through the whole digestion process to ensure that these probiotics actually get to your
gut and help populate your gut. Some of the side effects that you might see when you start taking
a good probiotic like seed include gastrointestinal or GI function, skin health, so improvement in your skin,
whether you're dealing with acne or maybe psoriasis or eczema.
It also helps with heart health, gut immune function,
gut barrier integrity,
and micronutrient synthesis of vitamins B9 and B12.
So you may even see an improvement in energy as well.
It's also known to really help with improving digestion as well.
So that could look like better, healthier poops too. And who doesn't want that, right? Finally, last but
not least, their compostable packaging is one of my favorite things about this product. So when you
first get your first seed package, it comes with a glass jar. It's a really beautiful green glass
jar that looks beautiful on your counter, which is also something that I just, it's a little added bonus. And it also comes with a little travel case. So you hold onto that jar
and every month you get a biocompostable bag that holds your new monthly supplements in there.
And then you just dump the supplements in the jar. So it's also environmental friendly and
we're not putting more plastic than landfills, which is also a huge, huge issue right now. So if you guys want to start and try
Seed today, go to seed.com slash realfoodology and use code realfoodology to redeem 30% off
your first month of Seed's DS01 daily symbiotic. Again, that is seed, S-E-E-D.com slash realfoodology
and use code realfoodology.
Studies have shown that when you fast,
it ramps up your autophagy,
which is essentially your body's sloughing off of old dead cells.
Yes.
And we get to the mitochondria
in a little bit deeper dive.
One of the nutrients in spirulina,
this is why it's best for mitochondria,
is that blue pigment called phycocyanin.
And it has amazing properties, one of which for healthy cells, it speeds up the generation of ATP.
And for unhealthy cells, which include cancer cells and what's called senescent cells,
it kills them. And in in fact this is what the chemotherapy
companies use in their radiation treatments is phycocyanin that's why i want to spell it out
for you later on so you can google phycocyanin cancer treatments and see that i'm not saying
just to be sure you understand because i have to be careful i want the fda to shut me down i'm not
saying algae stops cancer, but I am saying
that the scientists have found out that the blue pigment in spirulina called phycocyanin is proven
to kill cancer cells and senescent cells. So it does facilitate that autophagy at the same time.
It's a twofer, right? It's's generating it's giving you energy it's giving
it's satisfying your hunger it's got zero carbs so it's great for keto or intermittent fasting so
you're getting all that and cellular energy and immediate energy including brain which we'll get
to in a second and it's facilitating the death of those senescent cells which are also known as
zombie cells because they they are what's happened is the cell has replicated so many times that it can't replicate anymore.
But it's like someone who retires but doesn't know that they should leave the office.
And so they're hanging around, kicking over cans and making a mess of the office.
The senescent cells at the same time, they become inflammatory.
They can't do anything, but they don't go anywhere. So that's why you use cryotherapy
or algae to get rid of them. Because the inflammation can spread to the rest of your
cells. You don't want that. So back to the original, the spirulina or the mitochondria gets damaged because of the excess free radicals,
which you can reduce just by changing your diet. A, to less carbs. B, intermittent fasting. C,
adding algae. I prefer the algae because intermittent fasting can be difficult because
you get hungry. The spirulina stops the hunger and still gives you
the same benefits of the intermittent fasting. So that's great. The second option is to remove
the free radicals, right? But here's the problem. I didn't mention this, and I'll explain why it
is this way. Your mitochondria are the only cell in your body with two membranes. All your other
membranes, including the mitochondria, their membrane is made of lipids, which are a fancy
way of saying fats. But the mitochondria has the second inner membrane on the inside, and it is
impenetrable by most antioxidants. So vitamin C, vitamin E, nope, can't get in there. You could eat a room
full of blueberries, not a drop of antioxidants will get in there. The good news is there are
four that I know for sure that have been proven to get in there. Glutathione, melatonin,
superoxide dismutase, I know that's a long one, also known as SOD, and chlorophyll. Now, those four can get into the inner membrane and stop free radicals.
But here's the, I'll give you the good news and the bad news.
The good news is your body, from the moment you're born, creates glutathione, melatonin, and superoxidismutase. But the bad news is once you hit 30,
it slows down until when you're older, like 50 and definitely 60, you have virtually no
melatonin, superoxidismutase, or melatonin being produced, which is why when people get old,
they have a hard time sleeping because their body is not making melatonin. And no coincidence, this is exactly when disease hits.
This is when brain fog hits. This is when weight gain hits. Because no longer do you have the
natural protection, getting rid of those free radicals, because your body's not making them
anymore for you. And I thought,
well, Mother Nature, she's usually so smart. Why would she stop our bodies from making these at
the age of 30? And I found out why. Mankind has been on the earth for about 2 million years.
We always died at 30. It's only in the last 100 years that we've lived past 30.
So our biology thinks it's game over after 30.
And evolutionarily, it will take another billion years for our bodies to catch up to that.
So we're sitting ducks.
We've got all these free radicals and our body is not removing them anymore.
And glutathione, melatonin, and superoxidismutase are not found in medicinal quantities in any food except algae.
Spirulina has the highest superoxidismutase in the world.
When we have all the lab tests, chlorella has the highest glutathione in the world. Spirulina is number two. There's not much melatonin in either
of them. And they both have the highest chlorophyll in the world. And I didn't mention this at the
start, but spirulina is a bacteria. It's not even a plant. Spirulina is the dark one. Why is that important? Because
there's no fiber, no cellulose wall for your body to have to break down to get access to the
nutrients, including the superoxide dismutase and the glutathione and the chlorophyll.
So it's like a straight shot into the mitochondria. That's why, honestly, if you take a handful, 10, 20, 30, more is even better, of spirulina,
your brain will just perk up.
And I'll explain why in a minute.
So, and if you have any, I don't say anything.
I don't have the documents, the scientific documents to back me up with.
There are 25, 000 scientific papers documenting the
health benefits of superoxidism t's everything from stopping heart disease alzheimer's uh brain
inflammation anxiety it's endless and you know chlorophyll is all there's also you know maybe
not 25 000 but certainly at least 10 or 20,000 about it.
And same with glutathione.
Glutathione is known as the master antioxidant.
But heck, after the age of 30 or 40, we're, you know, we just aren't making it.
So what I want people to understand is what do these particular three or four antioxidants, if you add chlorophyll, do to your mitochondria?
They turn the free radicals into water it's like firemen they get in there they turn the free radicals into water and and
basically protect you because water can't hurt you but a free radical can and superoxide dismutase
is the most damaging of all free radicals so so number one spirulina is like your sos is like
your emergency get into this into the mitochondria to protect your health and if you want to see what
a real mitochond damage mitochondria looks like here's a healthy mitochondria because there's
something called the electron transport chain that you know where the electrons get transported from one segment to the next that eventually create atp but when they
get damaged it's sort of like a relay race you know we've all watched relay races people pass
the baton and then the next person goes the next race and well if they're not paying attention the
baton can drop and then you're obviously out of the race.
Well, when your mitochondria get damaged, these little relay stations in what's called the electron transport chain and what's being passed are the electrons instead of a baton. So the
electrons get dropped because the mitochondria is so damaged. And so when they get dropped,
they separate, they get further and further apart from one another, which means more and more electrons get damaged.
And so more and more free radical damage is occurring.
I tell people when you have a damaged mitochondria and they're trying to transfer the electrons so they can generate ATP for you.
It's like asking Tom Brady to throw a pass in a stadium that's four times the size of a normal one.
It's impossible. So this is why
disease, once it starts happening, is a really rapid downward spiral. But here's the good news.
Every single cell in your body, including your mitochondria, is always replicating itself,
is always growing back. We have over 30 trillion cells and every day 30 trillion cells
die and 30 trillion more grow. So when you give your body something like spirulina that has the
nutrients that can protect and restore the mitochondria, you will start to feel better.
You will stop that downward spiral and you will be able to start regaining your health and seeing your skin
improve and seeing your digestion improve and your sleep improve. So that's why I love both
the algae. The chlorella has the highest chlorophyll, which gets in there. But if you
had to choose one to improve your brain health and your mitochondria health, it's hands down the
spirulina, particularly because of the high superoxide dismutase and also the high blue
pigment, which is phycocyanin. You know what I love about this that I want to say really quickly?
Yeah. That I think is so important because I tell people this all the time.
We are told constantly, it's like the mainstream narrative that just like, oh, well, you know, you just get sick and your joints don't work anymore and you
gain weight and your hormones are all the place. And it's just, they kind of just tell you like,
well, this is just your fate now. And you're basically saying that that doesn't have to be
our fate. We don't have to go into aging, just being, you know, low energy and not be able to
really move anymore and have like achy joints. And obviously,
as we get older, things are going to start working less and less, but we don't have to
give into this fate of just like, well, you're just sick now and you're going to be on all these
medications and everything just stops working. It's like, no, there are things that we can do
to promote our health and actually help our bodies maintain themselves throughout older life.
Yeah. Well, aging does not need to be declining. And I'm an example of that. I'm almost 67.
Okay. Wow. That's incredible.
Yeah. So I'm at least twice whatever age you are. I wouldn't say three times, but-
I'm 38 so
yeah close but well you're not wait till you get to the 60s but everybody else my age is on
medications uh i'm on zero medications i also take no other supplements by the way algae because it's
so satisfying nourishing your grocery bill goes down you don't have to eat any more vegetables
if you don't want to um my skin is clear and I don't take any Botox.
I don't use Botox.
I mean, you look incredible too.
My hair is all mine.
There's no extensions.
So I'm really the poster child for what this stuff does.
It's not going to happen overnight,
but I've been taking it for 13 years.
But I will say you need to come to a moment of truth with yourself and say, you know what?
First of all, I'm worth it. I want to have a life that is exciting and gives me mobility
and engagement for as long as I live. But it means you have to take responsibility too. So that's proper nourishment, proper sleep,
proper fitness. And nobody's perfect. In fact, building this company, I was so stressed and
worked so much that I let my fitness drop. And so I'm trying to get back into my fitness level. So
again, nobody's perfect. But the irony is the combination that works for everyone, everyone, is actually very simple.
And they're all given to us by Mother Nature.
Sleep, sunshine, get out into movement, especially in nature if possible.
Love, if you can find it.
And algae is a gift to us from Mother Nature.
You don't get any more original because it was the first life on Earth.
And I'll get to how cool it is that mitochondria is linked to it.
But we're all looking for the magic technology.
And the irony is you don't need magic technology.
You just need the basics.
And I reinforce with people that self-love is not selfish.
I saw a quote that I loved which said,
self-love is giving the world the best of you, not what's left of you.
Right?
Right?
Yeah.
So I'm here to help people understand that you couldn't put anything more pure and concentrated in your body than spirulina algae and chlorella important because without your mental faculties, things really slide deeply fast.
So I want to share a book that came out last year called Brain Energy by Dr. Chris Palmer.
He is a professor at the Harvard Medical School. I'm in Boston and I know him.
Anyways, the entire book is about how all mental health issues, post-traumatic stress disorder,
anxiety, sleep, it doesn't matter what it is, is a mitochondrial disease. And he's right. And here's why. Your brain has
the highest concentration of mitochondria per cell in your entire body. There are 2 million
mitochondria per cell in your brain. Think about that. 2 million, right? The next highest,
by the way, and you ladies are listening, are women's eggs highest, by the way, and you ladies who are listening, are women's eggs.
And by the way, all of your mitochondria DNA come from the women.
Your regular DNA, half of it's from sperm, half of it is from the eggs.
Mitochondria, they're all from the women.
So ladies, we're always working behind the scenes making things happen.
Well, same thing with... Because mitochondria DNA control the show and they all came from
the women.
But anyways, so eggs are the second highest.
The third is your heart.
It has 5,000.
And then after that, it's muscles and skin doesn't have that many.
So the highest amount of mitochondria are where the greatest energy needs are, which is no surprise.
Because what do mitochondria do? Generate energy.
So 20% of your mitochondria energy is directed to brain power.
So when they aren't working, nothing's working in there.
Now, and all the science has proven that. And so because the spirulina has been proven to protect the mitochondria because of the particular nutrients found in it that are not available in any other food, we thought we'd test this out.
So we did our own little clinical trial recently.
It was with a nonprofit called the Gray Team, grayteam.org.
I'd encourage people to look into them
because they're doing fabulous work.
They're based in Florida.
And what they're doing is trying to reduce
the suicide rate of military veterans.
Apparently it is at between 35 and 50%.
Just think about that.
It's heartbreaking, heartbreaking.
So they've been partnering
with different biohacking devices and companies and they met us multiple times. So we decided
to partner up. So a couple months ago, back in February, we did a very small clinical trial with
them. And we had a group of people and all we did was give them a pouch of our spirulina algae tablets every day for 30 days.
We did the EEG brain scans before the test and again after 30 days.
Although, quite honestly, we could have done a brain scan after a week and found the same results.
Which were, when they did the first brain scan, it showed all the inflammation.
30 days later, inflammation completely gone.
Gone.
And they had various devices to measure their heart rate variability and their sleep scores.
One person, their heart rate variability increased 50% in 30 days, which is unheard of.
Unheard of, right?
Yeah. So we're still getting the paper written up.
I do have a presentation with some of the statistics
from this particular clinical trial.
And we want to do it again with a larger group.
I mean, this is really powerful
because all we did was give them 30,
nothing else changed in their life, nothing.
And yet their sleep improved, their mood improved.
One gentleman had a multiple sclerosis
and his tremors decreased.
So-
That's incredible.
Just from spirulina, right?
Yeah, that's incredible.
And well, and I'll give you one more example.
It wasn't a clinical trial,
but there's a company we work closely with called BrainTap.
And they have a device that you put on your head
that has lights and sounds that help soothe the brain.
I had the founder, yeah, on my podcast.
Patrick Porter, yeah, he's a good friend of mine.
Yeah, he's amazing.
We were both at,
and we've known each other for seven or eight years.
We were both at the Dave Asprey's biohacking show recently.
And so, and they love, we're going to be working with them even closer.
But they have this device that they hook you up to, to get all your biomarkers.
Because they want to measure your heart rate availability and all these different markers before you do their brain tap test. And then
they measure you again afterwards so that you can see how your biomarkers all improved.
But they wanted to test me first with my algae. So we did my test to get my base level of
biomarkers and my biological age.
And then I went and had equivalent of maybe one or two of my spirulina, mostly spirulina,
but it has some chlorella tablets.
I waited half an hour and I came back and they tested me.
They couldn't believe the results.
I blew out all of their markers to almost 100%
and everything except two where I was 80%.
They said they've never seen that in their entire years of doing this.
And my biological age dropped to 32 from 66 in half an hour with the equivalent of $6 worth of algae.
And I mentioned that i'm
trying to get the numbers because they like they just couldn't believe it that uh because there's
a guy who's getting a lot of press he was the founder of a biome uh technology company and i
can't remember his name right now but he's been spending last three years he spent like two
million a year on all these devices and and cell therapies and blah, blah, blah. In three years and
about $5 million, he's dropped his biological age by five years, but he had to spend like
three or $4 million to do it. I just spent the equivalent of $6, waited half an hour and dropped 32 years. Oh my gosh. Right?
So my point is,
That's wild.
we have to stop being so obsessed with the shiny object.
Oh, 100%.
The reality is the answer has always been here.
But we are so egotistical that we know more,
we know better than mother nature.
And I'm here to tell you, no, we don't.
We are part of mother nature.
And that's why whole food is always better for you
because it's part of mother nature too.
That's why walking is good for you.
That's why grounding is good for you.
Sunshine is good for you.
Yes, because it generates your D3.
You don't, you3. All these things that
over the years we've become afraid of Mother Nature and that's the problem.
We have to embrace Mother Nature. She has the answers for us. We are part of her.
Well, and time and time again, we keep trying to recreate what mother nature has done so perfectly.
And every single time we fail. I mean, I think about this all the time. How long ago is it?
Maybe like 40 years ago when they tried to tell us that margarine was healthier for us than butter.
And then it turns out that margarine was the number one leading cause of heart attacks.
Oh, it's disgusting.
But yeah, butter is like a natural form. Also too, I mean, I just saw this study the other day about breast milk. And apparently if your baby is sick, your breast milk will
actually change and create more like antibodies and antigens and, you know, just create all these
things basically that your body or that your baby needs in order to fight off whatever the sickness
is. And then once the baby is well, your breast milk composition changes again. And I'm just like, time and time again, we're seeing all these examples of just like how
nature creates all of this stuff perfectly for us.
We just need to work in sync with nature and tap into those resources.
I know.
And you'll be interested to know that in Japan, the only thing that keeps babies alive if
they can't digest mother's breast milk is spirulina in water.
And I read this about 10 years ago.
I thought, well, what's that about? So I found a chart, it was from like the 40s, that listed the amino acids
found in mother's breast milk. And I thought, gosh, that looks awfully familiar. Sure enough,
it is identical to the same amino acids in spirulina in the same proportions, right?
Wow.
And the other thing is there's an essential fatty acid called GLA gamma linac acid
that's found in spirulina in very high concentrations.
And the only place that has more of it is breast milk.
So I say, well...
We think that we can recreate breast milk by just creating these really crappy formulas.
And then the same thing we can say about the spirulina and the chlorella.
There's all these other companies trying to create all these synthetic, you know, drugs or synthetic technologies that spirulina and chlorella are just doing on their own naturally.
Well, I say that spirulina because it was the first life on earth and was a gift to us from mother nature is mother
nature's breast milk for us it's the equivalent because you can't very well drink mother's breast
milk but she was a she was a mother and she gave us spirulina which is a great segue for what I
want to tell you next so remember when I said that algae was the first life on earth and it was a cyanobacteria like spirulina spirulina is
called a cyanobacteria because it has it has no cellulose wall and no nucleus so it is definitely
a bacteria so nobody knows why this cyanobacteria anaerobic cells started growing on earth four
billion years ago but it did and an anaerobic cell is one that does not want to use oxygen. Because remember,
4 billion years ago, there was no oxygen on Earth. But then a billion years after this
anaerobic cell growing, it generated ATP and a byproduct is oxygen. So now there's a lot of
oxygen on Earth. So larger aerobic cells started growing.
By the way, this is all documented in science.
It's called endosymbiotic theory, and I can give you the reference.
So now the larger aerobic cells were growing, but they weren't generating HCP as well as
the anaerobic cells.
And now the anaerobic cells were struggling because they do better without oxygen.
So I can imagine the
conversation between the two cells going something like this. The big cell says to the little cell,
hey little guy, I see you're struggling there. How about you join forces with us? We'll protect you
from the oxygen and you can generate ATP for us. And that's exactly what happened.
Originally, the cyanobacteria, which was by itself, got absorbed by the larger
aerobic cell, but instead of digesting it, it became mitochondria. Cyanobacteria became
mitochondria. Now, this is why mitochondria are the only cell in your body with two membranes. There's the original one
from when it was by itself as an anaerobic cell and then got absorbed and then a second lipid
membrane was put around it. Your mitochondria evolved from basically algae. And that explains why everything that's in algae is a perfect
companion to the needs of the mitochondria because they're family.
That is really cool.
And let me tell you, this was discovered in this whole, it's called endosymbiotic theory. You can
Google it. It's on all the Pubmed articles about their origin of the mitochondria and it was discovered in the 60s by a scientist a female
scientist by the way at mit right here in boston and she was laughed at for 10 years by her peers
until they realized she was right so so the the origins of life on earth started with spirit algae
and your health as an individual starts with mitochondria.
You see the parallels?
It's crazy, right?
And yet nobody outside of Asia knows anything about this.
I know it is really wild. I mean, we should just be handing out spirulina and chlorella to everyone.
Like everyone in this country needs it. Oh, I know. I'm trying as much as I can. And we will
get bigger and better and all that sort of stuff. But I became a science geek and not everybody is a science geek. In fact, most of you aren't.
So my job is to try to take this science and make it easy for people to understand
and provide you with the links if you want more information.
Because I had to be 110% sure that what I was reading was accurate.
And it is.
And I've got 13 years under my belt to where I'm confident now.
And honestly, whoever is listening, whatever issue you have, algae is the answer. It doesn't
matter what it is. But if you want, again, to have a summary, the spirulina is the one that is the best suited
for your mitochondria.
And that's the one we call energy bits because it has the highest protein, by the way, in
the world.
Three times steak has very high iron, which carries oxygen in your blood, which is what
gives you energy.
And it satisfies your hunger because of all that protein and essential fatty acids.
It can replace fish oil, multivitamin.
By the way, regarding fish oil, most fish oil goes rancid.
It just gets oxidated, so it's inflammatory.
And I remind people, where do you think the fish get the omega-3 from?
They get it from algae.
Algae.
They just consolidate in their body and algae never goes
rancid and never never lets you down so so spirulina very nourishing to the mitochondria
for your brain think of it as brain food uh it would also be good for fertility and egg health
um oh yeah oh absolutely in fact um there's some um fertility clinics that we're talking to incorporate this into because the highest energy needs, second number, is in your eggs.
And so if your body, again, is so intelligent and if you're stressed, you don't have the right nutrients, it's not going to let your your eggs become um fertilized it's an automatic it
wants to wait that's why a lot of people have anorexic or anorexic can't get pregnant because
their body goes nope you don't have enough health to carry about a child so um and even when you are
pregnant because whatever you're eating goes to the baby, this is so nourishing and energizing.
It has so many of those important nutrients for the brain development.
We're working with autistic children and families because anyone on the spectrum, this helps their brain focus, right?
Oh, that's really cool too.
Brain power, remember?
Mitochondria. So that's why,
and we're working with doctors who are specializing in heart disease because it also,
because the heart is the third highest concentration of mitochondria,
and they're realizing that so many heart attacks are caused by free radical damage right and even when you have arteriosclerosis
which is hardening of the arteries what's hardening is excess calcium and there's a
vitamin called vitamin k2 that moves excess calcium out of soft tissue like your brain and
your heart into your bones and the two algae have the daily requirement of vitamin K2.
So the list is endless, honestly. I know it's almost hard to believe. And in fact,
I came up with a saying about the benefits of algae. And the saying is this,
too simple to believe, too powerful not to. I mean, that basically sums it all up, I feel like.
You are making me wish that I had,
so I'm traveling right now,
and I really wish that I had my energy bits with me
because I have a bunch of them at home right now,
and I just am like, wow, I want to take them all right now.
Yeah, well, we're going to get some more to you.
But by the way, anybody who wants to get on the LG train,
come and visit us at energybits.com, E-N-E-R-G-Y-B-I-T-S.
And we have a 20% discount code, realfoodology, all one word, realfoodology.
And there's no expiry date.
It works every time on everything.
We have bags and canisters and we have little fun little single serving pouches.
Also, we have a brand called Vitality Bits, which is a blend of the two algae. So it's half spirulina, half chlorella
if you don't want to separate them two. If you can buy them separately, you just have more control
because if you're hungry and you want energy, that's spirulina or you want to build your skin
and hair. And if you want to improve your detox and you want to build your skin and hair. And if you want to improve your detox and you want to build
your immune system and heal your gut, that's chlorella, which is recovery bits. But if you
can't get them separately, you can certainly buy them. Try to take at least 10 a day of each brand.
I mean, you could take less, but you won't see the kind of results. And if you have a condition
of any kind, you should be taking 30 or more a day we have lots of people who have heart issues or cancer uh it's great for
prevention i mean i didn't get into the blue pigment in the spirulina but as again it's called
phycocyanin we'll send you some links um and uh it'd be awesome it. It's on in healthy cells, it speeds up the because what it what it
what it does is it protects this sort of carrier electron called cytochrome C that moves the
electrons to the last station in that electron transport chain. And it's a water-based molecule and phycocyanin is a water-based pigment
which is different from chlorophyll which is a fat-based pigment and that's important because
it builds your your cell walls but this by this phycocyanin on in healthy cells speeds up the
movement of that molecule so that's contributes to the ATP, and in unhealthy cells like cancer cells
or senescent cells, it releases the cytochrome C, and that's what kills the cells.
And this is what the, with chemotherapy companies, they determine if the treatment is working,
they measure your cytochrome C molecules, because the more cytochrome C in your blood, they know the more cancer cells have been killed. And what's killing it? Phycocyanin.
Wow. And that's, sorry, that's the component that's in spirulina?
Yes. That's the pigment, the blue pigment. I'm sorry, I don't have an image of that, but
I'll send you the link to our wellness PowerPoint.
And it has all the references to it.
And I won't dwell on it, but there was one study where they put cancer cells in a Petri dish.
And they colored them.
And over 24 hours, and then they added this blue pigment, phyocyanin to the petri dish. So they did a 24
hour photography showing the cancer cells. They dyed them purple. And after 24 hours,
purple's virtually gone. Right. 24 hours. Right. And here's the amazing thing. The amount of phycocyanin that they put into those petri dishes,
one tablet of our spirulina has 4,000 times more phycocyanin than was used in that experiment.
Oh my God.
I want to get everyone I love on these.
Honestly, this is truly the gift of love.
I eat so much of it i'll probably never die
so you and dave asprey are in a competition right now we're gonna be here we have a little
competition you know but he you know he was on the instagram and he said here's breakfast and
he showed a picture of his hand with like 150 tablets and uh man that's I feel like that's a big strain on your body. I know.
Yeah. And supplements, because they're made from extracts, which do not exist in nature that way,
your body doesn't absorb, they absorb like 10% of it. But then the other side is because our food
and our soils are so damaged, the nutrients would be absorbed better, but there's
fewer of them in the food now.
That's why algae is the answer.
It's been endorsed by United Nations since 1974.
That is 49 years ago as the answer to world hunger because it has three times the amount
of protein at stake.
And it's been endorsed by NASA for 50 years because it
has a thousand times more nutrition than anything else in the world. So I'm just so proud to be
mother nature's spokesperson. I say I'm the voice of algae. I did not discover it. I did not create
it. I'm just explaining it. And I tell people algae is not new. It's just new to you. And think about,
you didn't know about chia or kiwa or matcha or collagen powder, which all have been used in
other countries for centuries until somebody brought it to your attention and made it easy
for you to understand and to take. And so that's what we're doing and safe. For us,
we're adding the safety feature because a couple of those nutrients that I mentioned,
the phycocyanin, the blue pigment, and the superoxide dismutase are damaged by high heat.
And almost all the other algae companies use high heat to dry their algae. We don't. So with us, you get the real deal.
You still get protein in the other ones,
but these have nutrients that have been proven in science to have healing benefits.
And don't cheat yourself.
It's a real thing.
So incredible.
Well, before we go, is there anything else you want people to know?
Like that we haven't talked about yet?
Well, I guess my message would be being healthy should not be so difficult.
It doesn't have to be that difficult.
You know, animals have got it figured out.
So I would just urge you get back to the basics and not question yourself as much as we do.
We think everybody else knows the perfect diet for us.
Nope.
