Welcome to the show, everyone. Thanks for being here. I've been working on a project called Episodes Reimagined. And I'm running a test tonight. I'm uploading this as a video cast. Let's jump into it. a land developer, and he had a business partner, a surveyor. So this business partner and my dad lived in the Sabine National Forest. Sometimes on a Saturday, my dad would go and visit him, and he had his office, the surveyor had his office kind of beside his house. Sometimes my dad would ask me to come down there with him, to visit with him.

she had a kid that was about my age. And I was about 11 years old, and the surveyor's son was probably about 9 years old. He was actually a couple of years younger than me. But he was, you know, my dad would take me down there and we would play. We were playing, and he looked up at me and said, Chihuacca man lives down that trail. Chbacca man lives down that trail down there.

there. You want to show me? Yeah. I was a couple of years old older than him, and I don't know if he was playing make-believe. I don't know what we were doing, but, you know, I said, yeah, show me, show me Chabaka Man. And we went a pretty good way. I was getting surprised we were getting far away from the house, and we got to this deadfall. This is it. This is where he is. And he said, I'll call him. I'll call him. He gave this, you know, this swooping sound. And I started hearing cracking and footfalls and walking.

All of a sudden, I heard, you know, real heavy breathing. Sounds like a horse? I thought it sounded like a horse. That's not a horse. Come on, Chi Blaka. What is that? And then this sound, it went... It punched me in the stomach.

It totally floored me and my stomach grow. And I froze, creeping me out. And this thing started having a fit. I looked at Tommy. He turned around slowly and he said... He doesn't like you. He doesn't like you here. And I turned and...

on a dime and took off running. Trail, and this thing gave chase. And I could see a big black figure, and I started to panic because I thought it's going to cut me off on that trail. Daddy! At that second, the brush just, this thing just stopped. What's wrong, son?

I was telling him something was chasing me. We've got a neighbor down the way. Sometimes their goats get out. go wait in the car we're about to go and I'm panicked and I'm scared and what was that I told you Chabaca man

But what was it? The boogeyman It's Chubaka man You boys ready to head out As we drove home I told my dad all about it I told him what I saw I don't know what it was

But you're okay now We drove away And you know One of the things What's so crazy about this is I remember at the deadfall, there was a lot of snack packages. There were crackerjack boxes open. There were Little Debbie snack cakes opened. It's like this kid had been going down there and feeding this thing.

But I'm an Eagle Scout. I was in Scouting a couple of years after this thing happened to me. Our scout troop got to go camp out in the big thicket. There is the Alabama-Kashada Indian Reservation. And somehow they arranged for us to camp out there. And we did. And we were around the campfire. The chief or a councilman or somebody came in with two braves.

They sat down at our campfire. And the chief started talking and telling us, And he began to tell this story of the hairy man of the woods. It wasn't a story of this, you know, nice thing. It was a... One that would take children. He doesn't like you. He doesn't like you here.

What was that? I told you. Chabaca man. But what was it? The boogeyman. It's Chubbacca man. Oh my gosh. that thing

The Chebacca man This thing that You know Was out there Chebacca man Was a big foot You know Immediately it clicked

And I'm like It was a big foot Moved about 20 miles away And became a deputy sheriff In a far eastern Tennessee County up in the mountains At that time We had about two or three years

Of drought like weather And we were hoping To get some rain So the Forest Service had started a fire watch. And nowadays, I think they have more sensors and cameras and things like that. But at the time, they had fire towers. So I discovered that one of these rangers lived near me. His name was Dobbs.

And so we struck up a friendship, and I agreed since I was on duty and it was county gas. Firewatch kit. Looks like you've got everything. But I would pull around, pick him up, and I would drive him up to the foot of the trail. All right. Good to meet you. Yeah. Good to meet you. So I sat there and, you know, I figured about 50 minutes. I turned on the radio, listened to some news and stuff.

That's when I realized it'd been probably about half an hour. So I started to get concerned. It started to get dark. And I turned on the spotlight and I shined it up the trail. So I wanted to make sure and illuminate the trail for him. I was worried about my new friend. I was worried what was going on. So I got out of the car.

And I took off up this trail, and it was a lot steeper than I thought. I mean, I was pretty war out and just about basically on your balls of your feet and your toes, and you're reaching for it. And I'm using the butt of this rifle as a walking stick, and I'm grabbing trees to pull myself up. So I kind of had a new respect for these guys. When I began to smell smoke, I realized that, okay, there's a fire. And this is what's delayed. Like, someone took an ice can right down my back, because my skin began to crawl, and I realized.

Dobbs. Something is not right. Feeling that I'd been on the ground in front of me, something caught my eye. Dobbs! Shut up. It'll hear you. Turn that light off. Get over here.

And so I did what he said, and I was walking over to him, and that's when it hit me. But what do you mean, it will hear us? What do you mean, it'll hear us? And I'm looking around, and he points with his gun. And I looked, and it was just an... When we looked across that clear... Don't shoot it. And it walked.

far enough into the woods to where we really couldn't see it. It didn't run downhill. It was circling that cleary like it was going to try to come up on us. And we started the direction headed uphill. Move! I saw it crossing the trail. It saw me. It could have killed me.

But it didn't? No. It wanted me to know it could. Once there were plenty of people around, I kind of looked at Dobbs and saluted, you know, and I'll talk to you later, basically. Pruiser, it was almost out of gas. I had to go down and get gas. Night in the hills has emergency screfs working throughout the...

the morning. Officials are still assessing the damage. It's been, you know, 30-some odd years, but I do remember that he said, on his way down, that's when he ran into this thing. And this thing yelled at him, and he turned and ran off the trail. The creature just perching him, but stopped about 15 feet away from him, and just yelled. And during this time, Dobbs had dropped his backpack, dropped his walking stick, and he was fumbling for his gun. He said, before I got my gun out, this thing just kind of shook its head. turned around and walked off, but it grabbed his bag and just cocked back and threw it as far as it could as it walked off. Both of us agreed as we sat there one night and had cigarettes and coffee, you know.

It was no damn bear.
