new people here who are fans so i'm no longer the only fan so that's nice you know you're not only fans yes i'm not the only fan um right so you're the number one fan but there are other fans yes yeah that's so good that's cool yeah i'm really excited because i know for a fact that Right. So you're the number one fan, but there are other fans. Yes. Yeah. That's so good. That's cool. I'm really excited because I know for a fact that Shane and I know pretty much nothing. Well, maybe we know like 20%, 30%. Oh, that's giving me way too much.

Okay. Yeah. The whole idea behind this episode is that Aaron is going to tell us the history and all the details and the lore of One Direction. Yeah. To continue my learning music journey. And to continue my learning of lore of anything. Of any lore. Yeah.

And this lore is crazy. I'm shocked you don't know anything because it was in the zeitgeist for a while. One Direction has been running parallel to my life for so long, and I never paid much attention to it. I mean, because they blew up when I was like 19 or 20. Yeah, 2010 to 2015. Yeah, so I remember, but I remember being like, as a younger dude, it was that era where

it was Twilight and One twilight and one direction where i'm just like oh sure oh yeah i loved twilight i read all the books you did oh yeah and saw the movies many times really and i re-watched the movie and i went okay we can put this to bed now did you did you know that i read half of the book before the movies were even like which book you were the first i started reading twilight no so my mom had a friend she's like my this is back in like 2006 my mom had a friend who was like a in publishing and she's like oh my friend says this is like the next big thing and i was like okay like cool i was getting like this was when i was really getting into reading yeah and so i remember reading it and i didn't know it was about vampires at all i didn't know

anything about it i get this this fresh book and i remember reading half of it and I didn't know it was about vampires. At all? I didn't know anything about it. I get this fresh book and I remember reading half of it and just being like, yeah, I'm not really feeling this. That's insane. But it was crazy to read it very organically without knowing anything. It was just a page turner. I guess also because I'm really into vampires and werewolves. I was like, oh, this is so, so great. And then when they did the movie, I was like, wow.

Yeah, I don't think I was old enough to read when the books came out, but I loved the movie. I don't think I learned that yet. That's disgusting. I think I was out of college. I think I struggled at that time still. It was, you know, frankly, I couldn't relate to the main character too well.

Which one, Edward or Jacob? Bella. And I frankly thought she was boring as a main character. She kind of is and a little annoying. She's not an interesting character or I couldn't relate to her at the time. I couldn't get into it. I think if I read it now. Now you relate to her.

She has to be a little bit boring. I relate to her now, yeah. She has to be a little boring because you have to mold her into being whatever Jacob or Edward wants. Yeah. But the only way I related to her was she had moved from Phoenix to a new state, and I had just moved from Phoenix. That is relatable for you. So I was like, uh-oh. Main character.

Wow. So speaking of Twilight, One Direction is kind of in that vein and I would say I have listened to I listened to a lot of One Direction but like I knew that they came

from X Factor but like I didn't know all the backstory but I definitely I love Harry Styles I followed Harry Styles and Zayn is the hottest one

he's very hot he's very mysterious and I like his music yeah he does music with Sia and like. Oh, I didn't even know that. What?

Is that true? Yeah. He does music with Sia? Wow. Yeah. Are you. That's crazy. Do you think you're capable of doing this lore if Amanda knows?

Well, so I was like in the One Direction years, I like stan them. But like after their hiatus, I've really only followed Harry. Fair. That's where like my alliance lays. I only liked the couple songs of Backstreet Boys, but NSYNC, I was listening to those albums. It was just like this That was everyday I remember my dad, there was a CD shop called Strawberries like way back in the day. This, again, aging me, but whatever.

I don't care. And there was her CD where she's sitting on the ground with her legs out, which is kind of like, okay, whatever. And I think it's Baby One More Time. And I think this CD was $17.

I was a big fan. I was a big fan. Me too. So that's our era. But I don't think there was a big, I don't think there was a boy band of their level until One Direction. Is that fair to say?

There was. There was a couple who tried. Yeah, there was Jonas Brothers. Motown. Oh. Who had one song. The Jonas Brothers were before, but I just don't feel.

I wasn't connected to Jonas Brothers. There was also Big Time Rush, and I don't know if you guys know this, but One Direction opened for Big Time Rush before their first tour. I don't even know what that is. But I think One Direction reached heights that had not been reached since Insane. Yes, they were like the biggest boy band to ever be. Yeah, like boy band.

I feel like Jonas Brothers was like Disney boy band. It felt like different to me. Because they're brothers. It's got to be a group of friends. That's fair. Did they come out the same time as Fifth Harmony? One Direction or no?

Fifth Harmony was a few years later. Female girl band. I don't know when Fifth Harmony came out. That was X Factor also, wasn't it? That was also X Factor. Crazy. And Pussycat Dolls, was that X Factor? That's a good question. I don't think so the lead of

pussycat dolls is the judge yeah yeah and she was she was very important in the form of one direction which we will get into okay can't wait all right all right let's get into one direction all right i know nothing yes all right hold your clits and your dits we're going to talk about the traumatic and mentally ill experience it was to be a One Direction fan. How long did you have that planned? Since last night. Oh my God. You guys aren't seeing this right now? There's a bunch of dolls on the table.

So I figured what better way to help you understand the lore than with like visual examples so you can follow. So I have my One Direction dolls here with me. How long have you had these? It looks like they've been worn. Since 2010. Those jeans

have lived. I think, okay, you can't see this, but I think it's really funny that they put Zayn in the Flynn Rider costume. This is not. We got these off of, what was it, like Etsy or eBay? So these are kind of like rip-offs. So this is Zayn. He was the mysterious bad boy. He also had the best

vocals. He could hit really high notes which was very important to a lot of people okay so that's for you okay i'll take him because he's the hottest one yes and then we have zane was also my first favorite not harry yeah huge then we have harry he was the front man he was charming and he was a womanizer that's very important that is how management painted him out to be but he wasn't a womanizer he kind of a little he was a little i think he was just like young and cheeky and like hot and so he got a lot of girls and people were like he's bad he's always had like a a very uh old school vibe to him like he's got like the mick jagger yes type of he loved that era he loved like letting people know that he listened to the Rolling Stones, the Ramones.

He thought he was very deep for that. Yeah, that makes sense. Then we have Niall. His whole thing was kind of that he's Irish. He's very Irish. That was his branding. And he was happy-go-lucky, just silly, kind of a little bit stupid, but in a cute way. And he was my second favorite.

Always. Yeah, before Harry. It went Zayn, then it went Niall, then it was Harry. Oh, but then Harry moved up. Yes, because my sister blackmailed me into taking her to, they had these tour documentaries. So like in 2014, she blackmailed me. She caught me sneaking out. And she was like, if you take me to see the movie, I won't tell mom and dad.

So then I was watching it. And this was during his headscarf era, if you know, you know. And I was like. I do know. And ever since then, I've been a Harry girl. Okay. Wow. Wait.

So there's a couple documentaries about Harry that we've talked about. You've seen, you're talking about the documentaries that are not made by like One Direction's management. Those are just made by other parties, which I think is very funny that you've watched those. No, it was just about Harry. Yeah. Those, they haven't done that yet. They had like a behind the album for his first album that was on iTunes, but it was shorter.

So I think you watch the like fan-made ones that are on streaming services. That's fun. I'm so glad I did that. You're deep into the fan-made. Wow. Great. Then we have Louis, which they didn't give us a Louis doll,

so we had Art put on a photo of Louis' face. That feels right. What is this outfit? I don don't know i've never seen him wear this but it's the sleigh kind of well from what i know about louie whoa what's going on with his foot that's just how he stands all right he stands honestly these are liam's shoes liam would wear these shoes yeah that makes sense i have notes um but he was the class clown he was like silly goofy loved a prank um and he wrote a lot of the music for one direction okay whoa good luck standing him up because that toe is on the ground um and then we have liam whoa damn you just i'm kidding liam into the open end uh so i told i told aaron before we started this podcast that I think for a lot of years, actually until last week when we were talking about this episode, I didn't know Liam existed. I think I thought One Direction consisted of four dudes. And it was these four.

I truly did. It was like, oh, and then there's Liam. And I was like, who? You should get liam back i actually think i i didn't know anything about him i didn't i didn't hate him i didn't yeah i didn't love him i just actually didn't know he existed well he's right here and that's and he's a person that's so funny because he recently or like a few years ago he went on logan paul's podcast podcast and said he was the front

man of One Direction he said that he's not it's okay though I'm gonna have them hold my mic it's actually so funny because there would be times when I would be thinking about or talking to someone about One Direction and I'd be like

yeah I feel bad for Louis I feel like he's the only one who hasn't you know made it realizing now that I didn't know Liam existed I'd be like, yeah, I feel bad for Louie. I feel like he's the only one who hasn't, you know, made it. Realizing now that I didn't know Liam existed. So actually. You know, strip that down and that's huge. You know? Yeah.

Do I? We, we played it in the writers meeting recently. Okay. And that's, yeah. That's Liam. Look guys, they're on the podcast. Whoa. We got One Direction. They're holding onto my mic.

There they are. and he's just you know being the funny sweet guy a little dumb yeah as you say irish he's just irish but i'm irish me too oh no but we don't have the accent and no we don't but he's got it he also was blonde that was the huge thing he's not a natural blonde but he would dye his hair blonde to be different so he's the only blonde he is the only blonde. He is the only blonde. Got it. Except for there was this one era where Zayn had like a blonde streak in his hair. And that was important.

I think I remember that. Okay. Okay, cool. So there's five guys. Yes. Five guys. And so these five guys, they individually audition on The X Factor, which you watched the auditions before this because we couldn't play the music.

You did show us the auditions. I was very surprised by some of them. Some of them were bad. Some of them were really bad, but they had this little mini spark in them. And they were also 16 years old. They were young. They were charming. They could not sing.

They also could not dance. A couple could sing. Zayn and Harry could occasionally sing. Yeah. Yes. Which was helpful. Liam was pretty good. Liam was pretty good too.

He did the whole Michael Bublé thing, which surprised me. He did. He did. They couldn't dance, which is, you know, I will say, see, our era, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys. You had to dance. They danced like crazy. Right. So that was huge because this was the first boy band who did not dance.

And so they were all on individually and they were about to get voted off okay and they so during x factor they made these video diaries that were posted online kind of like youtube videos and that's where people started to kind of like get a glimpse of their personalities and so i think they started to realize oh like these boys are cheeky these boys are charming and so then nicole from the pussycat dolls uh-huh said what if we put them in a group simon cowell takes credit for this but it was actually nicole she was the one who said let's put them in a group whoa huge and then so they put them in a group they they sing torn but natalie and brulia yes this is this is very important because that morning this is the first performance is One Direction. That morning, Louis, where is he?

Louis, he gets, is it like stung by a sea urchin and sent to the hospital. And so they're freaking out. They're like, oh my God, they can't perform. And then he somehow, miraculously, he comes back. He's fine. And they sing one of like the worst renditions of Torn ever. Oh no. And they sing one of the worst renditions of Torn ever. Oh, no.

And they go to Hollywood with that. And ever since then, they've been a band. That's what I've learned about X Factor auditions is it's not just about the voice. It's the X Factor. It is the X Factor. It is the charisma. It's the vibe. This is not America's Got Talent.

No. This is not Britain's Got Talent. This is not American Idol. This is X Factor This is not America's Got Talent. No. This is not Britain's Got Talent. This is not American Idol. This is X Factor. We're not looking for talent. No. We're looking for a factor. Or the X Factor.

They did not have it individually. They didn't even have the X Factor individually. But when you put them together, I thought Harry had it. I thought Harry had the X Factor. Harry, he did, but no one knew yet except maybe Simon. But just from watching his audition, he was funny. He was a little sarcastic. He was confident. He he was charismatic he had other dreams other than just singing yes not me getting so deep he wanted to be a lawyer yeah um i i thought i thought yeah i thought a little bit

there but i could see simon i could see simon watching whenever when all of them auditioned i was like he doesn't give a shit what they sound like i can tell he's like looking at the audience money off yes i can make money off of you yes and so we see these boys we follow them along on their like video diaries they do like these live streams and truly i truly believe the reason one direction is so successful is because of teenage girls they did not have talent and they were not charming, but the fandom that was created online is what made Simon Cowell be like, wait, there's something here. It was similar to almost like YouTube.

Like we weren't really tuning in for their singing. We liked their banter. This is when Larry started to get shipped. It was like the friendship that was being like sold to us. We believed it. That's why we were there. The parasocial aspect you think maybe inspired Simon Cowell to be like, oh. Because they finished in third place.

And a lot of people speculate that Simon had already planned to sign them because he saw the online success. Because this is like the beginning of the internet era. Like early YouTube days when fandoms are first being born. And like, this is one of, I think the earliest, like biggest fandoms. The greats never get first place. They never do.

One Direction, Daughtry. So true. I remember Daughtry and I was like, this guy's got it for me. They're just like One Direction. I was like, you could find him in a local pub

and just be like, yo man. They found him at Ace Hardware. They're like, can you sing? He was like you could find him in a local pub and just be like yo man they found him at ace hardware they're like can you say he was like building a house and you're like yes you are anyways wait who won then i think her name was rebecca okay well that's damn i think was i think it also might have been like this finale where whoever won harry like whispers in their ear think of how much pussy you're gonna get after this and that was an iconic Who said that? When you're 12 and 13, there's someone who's singing and it's like, they're the hottest person I've ever seen in my life. It does happen. So maybe it's like Target after dark Yeah, Target after dark Okay, continue So I want to get into the crazy fandom side of things Because again, I think that's kind of why One Direction is as big as they were Was because of the community And fandom behind them it was i i

you know because i had friends who were into one direction and i just i was on the internet so i would hear about things um vicariously and it was some of the first iterations of like a fandom that i was very aware of that was big yeah and like... Yeah, we were loud and we were crazy. I'm going to tease some of the things that we're going to get into. Great. There were protests. There were leaked booty calls.

There was hacking security footage. There was kidnappings. There was murder. The fans tried to buy and steal underwear from a hotel at one point. That's what we're going to get into today. Were you one of those fans? Listen.

Okay, so I was a secret fan for the first few years i publicly hated on one direction why because in my mind i was like if i'm gonna marry one of them i can't be a fan that's that is actually true very smart thank you you're right thank you so yeah the long game yes and i pursued entertainment for no other reason are you only here are you yeah do you think we're gonna bring on harry styles is that why you only here because... Do you think we're going to bring on Harry Styles? Is that why you're here? Did I think that if I pursued entertainment, I'd be more likely to be in a room with them?

Yes. But that was, you know, when I was 14. And so we commit to our decisions. And hey, I have been. It worked. Shoot for the moon and you might hit a spirit airliner. No, because I recently... I knew it. I was like, he's cooking on a joke and he I recently. I knew it.

I was like, he's cooking on a joke and he's going to fucking lose it. You're like, I'm going to make it. Spirit Airliner. And it's like, ow. Welcome to Smosh. I met Smosh because of Harry Styles. So thanks, Harry. But I did recently.

This was really devastating news to find out last week. So I worked on a show. I won't say which show, but I won't reveal my sources. But I recently found out that at the same time that I worked on that show, Harry Styles visited the show and started dating someone from that show. I could have been YN. So fucked up. Do we want to reveal who he was dating?

I will not reveal who because I don't think she's in the public eye at all. But I did when he came in. I wore his merch because I was like, I don't think she's in the public eye at all but I did when he came in I wore his merch because I was like I can't be rejected by Harry like he has to know it's because you wore his merch I also like I walked into the room that he was in and I just gasped immediately I was like

and he looked up at me and it was devastating so I don't think I knew that you had met him well Well, I keep it quiet because I'm hoping to meet him again. Well, she met him from afar. She met him from afar. She had a ghost leave her body and then he like walked away. When you meet him

again, you're going to have to wear a mustache and be like gee. Holy goodness, it's Harry. Now, who are you? Okay. So yeah, it did did work I pursued this field And it did get me in a room with Harry Styles He just didn't fall in love with me yet

That's I will say that's That's absolutely devastating That he dated one of your co-workers Yeah That is devastating It could have been me Well

I'm just I mean I just Do you not think I don't always want to say like Oh you fucked up And it didn't happen Because you fucked up No why would't happen because you fucked up.

No, why wouldn't you date me? Why wouldn't you date me? You're digging a hole. I'm not. Okay. Yeah. Okay, let's get back into the crazy fandom stuff. So one of the first moments that we really come together as a fandom is for Niall.

And this was a movement that we called hashtag let Niall sing because our poor little Irish boy, he didn't get many solos. Let me sing. And us as like 12-year-olds, we were convinced it was because management was discriminating him because he was Irish. What? And so. We listened to their. What? From the little information I have now, we listened to their auditions and I get why he didn't get many solos.

He didn't have a good voice, but he was.
