Reddit threads are seriously very disturbing. So trigger warning for SA and many other gross
and just disgusting acts. And so yeah, just trigger warning now. But anyways, make sure you sit
back, relax, grab a drink or grab a snack and get cozy. And today we're getting into
some horrifying predator Reddit threads. CEO demands I sent him a lead to
legal content involving minors.
The company I work for owns a website open to the general public.
Both our company and servers are located in California.
Today, one of our users had uploaded a series of illegal content involving minors.
Per our SOPs, I've deactivated the user's account, made the images non-public, but still kept them
on our servers to avoid destroying the evidence and reported the incident to law enforcement online.
No response yet. It's kind of late here. The final step was to send a notification to company management.
Soon after that, I received an email from our CEO demanding a detailed incident report, including the images in question.
I sent the report, but instead of sending the images,
I wrote that I probably shouldn't be sending illegal stuff around,
to which he promptly replied that this is not my concern.
That as a CEO and owner,
he has legal right to access any company information
and I should just comply.
It's not untypical for him to be a control freak,
including demanding people do something in the middle of the night,
but at least I'm getting paid to handle urgent interest.
incidents around the clock. Yet he is usually not bothered with us grunts. The company has no in-house
lawyer, so I can't consult them. From this mess, I have three questions. One, would it be a legal
distribution of illegal content involving minors for me to send these images? Number two, would it be
a legal possession of illegal content involving minors for him to receive these images? And number three,
what should I do?
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says, one, would it be a legal distribution of legal content for me to send these
images?
The commenter says, absolutely.
Tell him you're uncomfortable filing his request.
If you really want to take a more tactful approach about it, tell him it's because you're
not comfortable looking at the imagery.
Number two, would it be a legal possession of legal content for him to receive these
images?
And the commenter says, this is.
is more gray area, but I'm sure a prosecutor could make that case. And number three, what
should I do? Do nothing further. Your obligation ended when you reported it to law enforcement.
They'll respond by issuing a subpoena to the company, which is a court order that'll give them
permission to come onto the property and image the servers in question. I'd definitely start
looking for another job, ASAP, because if he's a control freak, you may be retaliation.
retaliated against and fired. And then the OP response to this commenter and says,
unfortunately, I have already seen the illegal images while handling their removal. And in reference
to the commenter when the commenter said, your obligation ended when you reported to law
enforcement. The OP says to the law may be, but not to my employer. And finally, in reference to
the finding new job, the OP says, definitely. What sucks is that I've been working for them only for
a few months. And then another commenter says, why not just tell him which server slash file location?
This is what I would do. Hey, I don't think we should be further distributing these files and exposing
additional servers to be placed under subpoena, as that could disrupt business operations.
As such, instead of sending, here's the exact location to the file so you can access them with
law enforcement. As CEO, your account always had access to
all server folders.
And the OP response and says,
Actually, no.
He doesn't have server access as he's not a techie,
and I guess he has never interested in it before.
To get the files,
he would have to SSH into one of the servers
and run a few commands to retrieve the images from file storage.
Update, the situation has gotten way creepier.
I didn't send the images overnight,
instead of forwarded the request of my bond.
asking him for advice.
In the morning, I saw the CEO's email to my boss that I was ced on, demanding the images,
but not mentioning that they are illegal content involving minors.
And ranting about how the hell is he supposed to run the company if his own employees deny him business critical information.
My boss replied something diplomatic like, I'll look into it, but why do you need them in the first place?
The CEO replied that he needs to verify himself,
that it's really illegal content.
Maybe because I'm sleep deprived
or because as a woman,
I'm not fond of men being creepy,
but I can't help thinking
that the only reason he needs these images
is that he wants to see this illegal content.
Since I handled pages overnight,
I'm not expected back online.
I work from home.
Early in the morning, so I haven't done anything,
and I'm just sitting here scared shitless
that I'll either commit a crime if I comply, or I'll be fired if I don't.
Or at least my working life in this company will turn into hell.
And then we get an update five days later, and let's get into it.
This reads, hi, I'd like to thank everybody who responded to my original questions.
Since then, the situation was developing quickly and not always in a good direction.
I was freaked out on Sunday, to the point that I forgot which day it was and thought I was supposed to work.
Eventually, my boss messaged me that the CEO has found someone to send him the suspect illegal content.
On Monday, two things happened.
First, I received a call from the cop who was assigned to investigate my report.
We mostly discussed things unclear from the report, but at one point I mentioned CEO's request
and that it was eventually fulfilled.
Later, I had a video call with HR where I was shown my Reddit post,
asked if it was me,
and before I even managed to open my mouth,
fired for disclosing confidential information and insubordination,
aka calling the CEO a control freak.
Next day, the detective called back and thanked me for my help.
He said that the CEO was known to them,
so they just searched his house and discovered a ton of illegal content involving minors.
Oh my God.
Not just the images in question.
The dude was presumably arrested because since then, from what my friends back at the company
are saying, everything has ground to a halt.
Mr. Big had set up so many internal processes to require his approval or participation
that even accountants aren't sure if they will be able to provide.
process the next payroll in time, WTF, and that might be the end of a nice collective poisoned by a single
jerk. As of myself, I'm about to post my CV on various job boards. Sucks to be unfairly fired,
but it seems soon there will be no employer to sue over dismissal. So I'm not looking back. At least,
if an interviewer asked why I was fired, I can answer that our CEO was arrested for illegal content
involving miners possession and then eventually everything quickly went to hell i'm going to scramble my
password so no point in trying to contact me and the top comment says well that just went from weird
to holy fuck pretty quickly good job l aop and good luck in the job search and oh my god
that escalated so quickly like obviously the CEO was very weird for absolutely for
asking for these pictures. But like, I mean, for him to be, I guess, a notorious creep or predator of some
sort, like he was already on the detectives or police radar. And they went to his house and found a ton
of illegal content involving minors. That's disgusting. And hopefully this guy was arrested and put
away for a long, long time. But, I mean, I feel so bad for the OPE. They lost their job.
And now they have, yeah, they want to get their final paycheck because the guy put so many
protective things that they can't even run payroll. God, that it's just unbelievable that like
the CEO of I guess a big company is just a notorious predator. And this just goes to show guys.
Be careful because you never know who's a predator or where they're lurking and it could be
anybody. It's truly terrifying. God, so disgusting. I hope that guy went away for a long,
long time or just they just locked them up and threw away the key.
So gross. Am I the asshole for never telling my mother what my aunt was doing to me?
So I, 24 male, have had my life flipped around. My mom was 10 and her sister, my aunt was 14,
when they immigrated from Taiwan. My mom got into a lot of trouble, and she and my dad were
both 14 when she got pregnant. My grandparents did not let her get an operation to have the baby
removed. I was so close to my mom until I was like eight. And then she just started partying,
hanging out with friends, arguing with my grandparents all the time. There were a few times when
she just took me after an argument and kept me away for a month or two and had my dad keep me.
It kind of continued like that until I was 13, and my grandparents died.
My aunt's engagement collapsed, and she moved in to help my mom.
My aunt manipulated and did horrible things to me, and it messed me up.
My grades dropped, and I started screaming at my mom and blaming how she used to act for how I acted.
I got into fight at school, and I was so afraid of my aunt to the point where I'd start
cuddling with my mom all night just to stay away from her. When I was 16, my aunt got pregnant,
and she moved away with a friend like a week later. She came over once after the baby, David was born,
and when my mom went out for a little bit, she made me hold him and took a photo of us and said,
I should hold my son while I can. Then she moved with David.
David to Taiwan and started living with a cousin. I have tried to forget everything she did to me.
I graduated with honors and I got a wonderful job. I have tried to make my mom proud. I mean,
I just got her a car. She calls my fiancé the daughter she never had. My fiancé is the only one
I told this because I had to let her know. Apparently last Monday, my aunt drunkenly told the cousin
everything she did to me and about me being David's father. She got kicked out right away
and my aunt was told everything by the cousin. My mom had a breakdown and she asked me if she
was really so horrible that I couldn't tell her this happened to me. She yelled that she would never
have been able to help but because I didn't know her grandson is stuck with a monster. She kicked me out
saying I never must have forgiven her
for how she used to act.
I've talked to my fiancé about it
and she said my mom just needs time
and can't fathom the idea
that she has a grandson
she can't help.
I am so confused.
Was I wrong
to never tell her?
Edit, I just want to say
I appreciate the support of everyone.
I don't know what the future will bring
but thank you all for making me
a little bit happy.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says,
You are not responsible of all that mess.
Your aunt has aged you for years,
got pregnant with your baby,
and left to another country when you were a minor.
You were just a kid who faced the decisions of a monster.
Now your mom is in shock.
She needs time to handle the news, of course.
It doesn't excuse her reaction,
but I'm sure she will come back to you with apologies.
You know, as a mother,
she think slash feel that she failed you.
She didn't saw what her own sister had done to you,
so it hurt her deeply,
that her own blood betrayed and took advantage of her child.
You were too young and manipulated,
so stop thinking if you should or not told her.
And then the OPE responds and says,
I have not been to therapy.
It's too hard speaking about this stuff with anybody other than my fiancé.
It's different commenting about it online as well.
It's just, I can't help but feel that my mother is right because before she kicked me out,
she was really adamant that she would have been able to save me,
and now she must think that I hate her.
And someone else says, not the asshole.
You are the victim.
How you cope with the SA is your choice.
No one, including your mother,
has the right to demand anything of you.
Yes, she is accountable for leaving you with a predator,
especially as it was just for partying.
Had she had been working to earn money for rent and food,
I would have been more sympathetic for her.
Just because she is your mother
does not mean that you owed slash owe her anything.
I am sorry that you were abused,
and I hope that you were getting professional help.
Your mother owes you multiple apologies,
and not one of them should blame you in any way.
And the O.P. responds and says,
I know that I'm the victim now.
My fiancé has helped me understand that.
With how people used to tease me for my aunt being how she was,
I used to struggle with that.
But even though my mom used to neglect me,
it's like she's most mad at me because she couldn't save me
and wishes that she could have.
And now I'm afraid that she hates me.
And someone else says,
Not the asshole.
Your mom is angry.
Yes.
Because she knows she failed you as a mother.
It doesn't matter that she had you so young
and then proceeded to start partying when she was older.
Your mother's behavior does not excuse what she did to you.
Your sad excuse of an aunt
should have never been trusted with you ever.
I do not care that your aunt moved in to help your mother.
Your aunt ass age you.
At the time, you didn't realize that what your aunt was doing was wrong because she had manipulated you.
The fact that your mom is taking her anger at her sister out on you was uncalled for.
Your mother needs to place the blame or the blame needs to be placed.
Your cousin should have never told your mother.
Yes, I do agree that you should have told her, but you can't go back on that.
And then the OP comes back one month later with an update.
and let's get into it.
It has been a rough month and a bit since I last posted.
The day after my post, my mom called me back home and said we needed to talk.
And well, I came back and sat down on the couch to talk.
She just started crying, so I started crying.
She calmed down first, but I kept crying.
And it's embarrassing to write, but I fell asleep.
My mom woke me up and we had to talk about things,
and I have to thank a user for commenting for what they told me.
I told my mom how because of how provocative my aunt was
and how other kids would tease me whenever they'd see her,
I was so confused when things were happening,
and I was trying to push it all down and away.
She even brought up, though, how she should have known something was wrong
because no kid at that age should cuddle with their mom all through the night,
but she was too wrapped up and trying to have fun to notice.
And then, I don't know, I tried to tell her how much I've worked to make her proud, and she told me that she's always been proud, and I'm proof that she didn't end up being a waste of space like her parents always called her, and I am her entire life.
And then she admitted that she called my aunt the night before, and she told me that even though she wanted to be sly with things to find out about David, my aunt knew why she was calling.
It turns out after my cousin kicked her out,
my aunt moved into a hotel room because she couldn't afford an apartment.
My mom offered to pay that apartment on the condition that she sends David to her,
and my aunt's agreed.
My mom told me that she wishes she could send my aunt to jail
so she could suffer, but she won't fail her grandson like she failed me,
so she had to bring him.
He came a week after, and my aunt did not come with.
She sent him on the plane with a relative,
who didn't know what was up and left the day after to visit other people.
He was really quiet and confused,
and my mom took him around everywhere trying to get full custody of him right away.
I don't know anything about this legal stuff or how he was even allowed to come with a guardian,
but my mom has told me not to worry about it, and she is handling it.
He did refer to my mom as his aunt when he came,
but as soon as our relative left, she made him start calling her grandma,
and as weird as it's been, calling me dad.
He seemed uncomfortable with it, but he's kind of gotten used to it.
My mom has loved being a grandma, and David is actually really attached to her.
I know it's only been a little bit since he came, but it reminds me of myself at that age with how I used to cling to her.
She's introduced him to all her close friends.
Whenever they ask about his mom, not just says that she's in Taiwan and sent him over for a better life since I'm getting married.
Yesterday, my mom did talk to me and point out some strange stuff with David that she's noticed
in her belief that my aunt was starting to do to him what she'd done to me.
I don't really know what to do with that info.
My fiancé has told me, I just need to keep handling it like I'm doing and stay confident.
I'm doing my best, but with how things have been, I don't know if it's good enough.
That said, I do feel like I'm mentally better knowing my fiancé is good with my mom
taking in David, and my mom and I clearing things up about what my aunt did.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One person says, please, please, please engage a therapist because during this phase of opening
the wound so you can heal, the anger will come and it will be awful.
It can put you at risk of a manic or depressive episode, and it only takes a handful of
dodgy decisions to spend a year or two cleaning up that mess.
And someone else says, it's best if your aunt goes to jail.
She deserves to be punished.
She is a predator and has violated two minors,
one that was related to her by blood and the other that came out of her body.
How much low of a person she is.
You shouldn't be keeping it low, at least not for your son's sake.
Make it right for him.
And someone else says,
your mom needs to let you decide what to do regarding David and if you want him calling you dad.
It's all well and good her accepting him as a grandchild and taking that role,
but it is unfair that you are being forced to deal with the physical embodiment of your years of S.A. and R word.
Your mom can look after David, but you need to look after you and then decide how you want to go on from there.
And then the OPE, he responds and says,
my mom is going to seek custody of him and will be the one raising him.
I'm not taking it.
We had decided that was for the best because my mom doesn't want me thrust in that role
without being ready for it.
Yes, it's weird to have him calling me dad, but I can accept it because for better or for
worse, it's who I am and maybe in the future, things can be different.
And then someone says, you need to get a DNA test to prove you are the father since she,
she was abusing you. She might have also been abusing other boys at the same time or had a
casual relationship. It would also mean to make sure that David can't be taken away and that he
has his rights in being able to live her without your mom. It would also could be used in a case
if you decided to go that route since it seems like not only did she manipulate you, but her own
son as well. She is a danger to young boys and it should be considered about taking legal action
here and in Taiwan.
You both need to get into therapy to work through your individual issues.
Although what your mom is doing is great, you also need to put yourself first since you
are a victim and need to set your boundaries in your relationship with David until you feel
more comfortable.
And then the OPEE responds and says, we did get one.
He is mine.
My mom is handling the legal stuff and as of this morning, she has assured me that she'll be
able to be David's legal guardians soon, and my aunt will have no right to take him away.
I really don't know the legal stuff or anything, and my mom knows it'll stress me, so she's
keeping me disassociated from it all. And honestly, I know she should be in jail, but I don't
think we can do anything to her with her in Taiwan. And then the OP comes back one week later
with an update, and let's get into it. This reads, I don't want to be. I don't want to be. I don't
really think I'm going to keep doing these. Maybe I'll do one way into the future if I do,
but I felt I needed to give another update because I got a lot of messages about my aunt and I feel
like I needed to get some things off my chest. I do wish things were different and I was not in
this situation. But I am in it and I have to see the good because the bad can be too much.
I know some people would love it if I made this update about going on Facebook or Twitter
and blasting my aunt on it and the police in Taiwan locking her away for life, but it's not.
It's hard to write or talk about her outside of something which I know is private like this.
And if I had to think, that's because I still feel guilty and conflicted and almost wonder if I deserved it.
Or if I wanted it, even though I know it's not true.
I hope that she lives a terrible life, but what's best for me is staying separate from her forever,
and I won't be doing anything to associate with her ever again.
A lot of people had an issue with my mom forcing David to call me dad or father while taking the title of grandma.
And I won't lie, it is weird and it is uncomfortable,
especially because I don't feel like a father.
and I don't even know what that means to be one.
But it's not making me feel sad or mad or anything.
Just a little offbeat.
And I don't think it's anything to be angry over.
And as for the rest of it, my mom officially has custody of David.
I don't know how the process went.
I don't know how it happened so fast or if it even was fast.
I do know she did get sent documents from my aunts to.
lawyer in Taiwan, but she's kept me uninvolved to avoid stressing me. The thing is that one day,
David said something about his mom needing him to make babies. Oh my God. My mom honestly cried
harder than she ever has that night. And when I went to her, she kept crying and hugging me
and saying she's sorry. I do hope that David will snap out of it soon. He does like seeing the child
psychologist my mom takes him to.
She's gotten David into school, but because of a situation, they have meetings with a school district psychologist.
She's got him a translator because his English isn't that good.
It is getting better.
And apparently the school's resource team is setting up something called an IEP.
As for David himself, it's weird that he misses his mom, but he does.
I get missing Taiwan and being scared of a new place, but I don't know why he misses her especially, since
she was doing that to him.
He's become really attached to my mother,
and my mom really loves being a grandma.
She joked to me one day that the best thing is that nobody at work
flirts with her anymore because she's a grandma.
I guess the line for some guys is she's a grandma before she's 40.
She takes him to the temple, the park, loves cooking traditional food for him
and always speaks in Mandarin with him.
She even went out and bought a lot of parenting books
and signed up for a class to make sure she can do it right, even when it gets tough.
Our interactions have been limited, and I think he's scared of me,
but my mom's told me over and over again that it's all right,
and I don't have to do anything I don't want to do.
I did ask her why she's not forcing me to be more involved,
but she just said she feels it'd be wrong to force me.
And another thing that's happened is that my father found out about David.
My father is not really in my life.
He has his own wife and kids, and he's focused on them, and I'm an adult now.
So I'm at peace with what our relationship is.
Honestly, this was the first time in months I talked to him, and before that,
it was last year when he updated his will because he decided he wanted me to be the one to inherit his classic Corvette.
Apparently, one of my mom's friends let him know about David,
and he showed up unannounced with his kids.
making them carry two crates full of toys while himself holding a new Xbox.
My mom was pissed and has hidden the Xbox, much more than he's ever gotten for me.
He talked to my mom about everything while his kids played with David, and I won't lie.
I felt jealous of them because it seems like being an uncle and aunt is easier than being whatever I am.
But when my dad talked to me that day, it was alone in my room and he cried too,
because he never wanted me to be a dad as early as him,
and it was weird seeing him cry or be affectionate with me.
My mom and dad did take David out to the park that day,
and he honestly had so much fun with him.
Like I saw them come home, and he was walking between them,
and my mom was holding his left hand,
and my dad was holding his right hand,
and they seemed to be having so much fun.
It was almost like they could have been us if the timing was right,
and that did feel really sweet.
My mom's let my dad take David to his house a few times as well, and he started calling my dad's wife, Steffi, which is weird because she's more Chinese than my mom is.
They still call me on FaceTime just to talk with him, and my dad's come a few times since then, because they want to see their nephew.
My mom is going to go with my dad's family on Halloween because they all want to take David out.
The best thing for me, though, has been my fiancé.
I guess I never really understood the term that she's my rock before this, but I get it now.
My mom gets it too, and it has me call her whenever I guess things start to get uncomfortable,
and I get why she calls me when she's in a similar place.
Her family has been amazing and understanding too.
They've got a very sanitized version of what happened to me, but just like my mom,
but they've all been so great to me.
It's weird because it's like I got the one-first,
fiance whose family treats me good despite it. And I won't lie. Her parents are very traditionally
Chinese and I was scared they wouldn't keep approving of me, but her grandfather gave me a hug.
So I am in a better place and my fiance is probably the biggest reason why.
Thank you for listening. And now let's get into some of the top comments. One person says,
the sad thing is your aunt is free to continue doing this to other children,
but I'm glad you are all getting to a good place as a family.
And someone else says,
I'm so glad you're able to find a really supportive fiancé and family through her.
Please do consider getting therapy at some point.
A good one will help you find some peace of mind in all of this
and to sort through everything that's happened and come to terms with it.
an IEP is an individualized educational plan and is used to help someone who has specialized needs,
either due to trauma like your sons or due to some sort of biological disability.
Get the extra help they need to do well in school.
And someone else says, makes you wonder who the aunt's current victim is.
And it made me wonder who her victims were before OP.
and we have never received another update from the OP.
Am I the asshole for reporting my sister-in-law to her exchange student host program
when she omitted her predator husband from the application?
Trigger warning galore. Stop here. Sensitive.
Throwaway account, I'll try to keep this as concise as possible.
I don't feel like I did anything wrong, but I have to be.
have several family members cutting me off right now.
My husband's brother, Sean, has two felony arrests, one in 2019 and one in 2023 for possession and
distribution of illegal content involving minors.
He was fired from his teaching position at his high school for alleged inappropriate
contact with a female student.
He has had inappropriate relationships with unapproved.
Underage Girls Online, throughout the entirety of his 15-plus year marriage to my sister-in-law,
Anne, including immediately after they were married.
Edited for Clarity.
My own daughter, when she was 5 to 6ish years old, before we knew any of this around 2009,
she is in college now.
One time when we were all together as an extended family,
she came running upstairs from the basement where she had been playing and said,
Sean told me to touch his worm.
We all stilled and questioned him, but he said she was mistaken.
We questioned her separately away from him, and we were satisfied that she was okay,
but after that we never let any of our children be around him alone ever again.
I would like to be clear.
I was a stay-at-home mom, and no one watched my kids but me,
so he never was a caretaker for my children at any point.
This is also why we have never allowed away sleepovers.
Sorry, not sorry.
Sean also took inappropriate photos of his wife's then,
very young sister while she was sleeping when she visited them.
After the last felony arrest,
Anne divorced Sean for legal protection because she's a teacher.
Except they never stopped living together,
and she never changed her name.
Nothing changed.
He also never got any consequences.
just financial.
He lost his job, but that's about it,
because my in-laws basically footed the bill.
He didn't even have to register as a offender.
Okay, so here is where people are mad at me,
and I ask, am I the asshole?
Anne posted in our local mom's group and on her Facebook wall
that she is hosting a foreign exchange student for the summer,
and would anyone else be interested?
My head about exploded.
My family hosted the year before last.
You need to have a kid near the same age as your own
and be able to pass a background checked.
I knew Sean could never pass one.
So how in the world were they hosting?
My husband immediately called his parents.
They happened to have both Sean and aunts two kids there
who knew nothing about the exchange student
and were stunned as well to hear about this.
They knew of no plans to have Sean stay
elsewhere during the duration of the summer. I asked the local coordinator at the exchange
to contact me. She told me that Anne had only put on the application for herself as the adult.
Having been through the process before, you have to put all adults 18 plus in the household
on the application. I told her that, unfortunately, Sean could never pass a background check
due to his felony arrest for illegal content involving minors, and that he lived in. He lived in a
there 100% of the time. The coordinator was absolutely horrified and thanked me for letting her
know. Today, Anne texted my husband and I absolutely freaked out, accusing us of breaking her daughter's
heart over losing the exchange student that she didn't even know of yesterday, accused me of hating
Sean, being unchristian, hateful, petty, I have lots of screenshots. Along the way, I also
found out that Anne is absolutely convinced that only immediate family know about Sean's arrests.
As if public records don't exist and people forgot our last name in the high school incident never
happened. And my mother-in-law, so Sean's mother, is disappointed that I didn't go to Anne first
before going straight to the exchange student coordinator. I was also contacted by Anne's mother
and soundly threatened to, don't mess with her, family. I have now blocked all of them across
all socials. Am I the asshole? And now let's get into some of the top comments. The OPEE also adds in the
comments and says, OPE, I also forgot to say, I am a mandated reporter. And someone replies and says,
honestly, your sister-in-law is likely one to as a teacher. She doesn't need her job if her
judgment is this piss poor. And the OPEE responds and says, she is also a mandated reporter.
I've been saying this for days since all of this started going down.
down. And someone else says, Sean and Ann's minor children still live with them? And the O.P.
responds and says, yes, they do. Boy 11. Girl 14. Another user says, please reach out to his parole officer.
And the O.P. responds and says, it's so effed up he doesn't have one. He was never convicted.
Twice he was caught up in the same sting. He is so dumb that the second time he was arrested,
they were watching the same sites and you used the same logins with the same passwords.
Anyway, all the county wanted was money for the huge fines.
They let them all go.
He spent like a week in jail.
That's it.
Another user says she knew what she was doing when she decided to pretend her resident predator lives elsewhere.
She might have forgiven him or have a selective memory of events where the predator did nothing wrong.
but setting up the conditions for the predator to claim a new victim is absolutely disgusting.
You are not the asshole.
She is the worst kind of enabler.
And someone else says,
Who cares if the people who are covering for a predator are upset with you?
Are these the ones whose moral compass you need to check yourself against?
You say he's faced no consequences because you're not giving them any.
The family just goes along and has holidays and bar.
barbecues and acts as if they don't have a predator in your midst.
Some of these Am I the Asshole Posts are really effing stupid because you know you did the right thing.
So the family is cutting me off argument is really dumb.
And then the OP gives us an update two days later and let's get into it.
This reads,
Late last night my daughter, the one mentioned in the story who is now an adult,
a college student who's home on summer break,
came home from spending several hours with her grandparents.
They had a very long and thorough talk about the situation.
They believe I instigated it, but they don't actually blame me.
They say it will have serious and far-reaching effects within the family.
And to that I say, these are natural consequences.
Anne had no business applying to the program.
And of course, if Sean had been a decent human being,
none of this would even be a conversation.
I told our daughter all these specific things.
She didn't know that Sean did.
She did know for a long time he was a predator.
She had that knowledge to keep herself safe.
She had no recollection of the worm incident,
but she told us something that upset us.
My husband recounted how he would watch his brother basically manipulate,
his word today, younger girls when they were teenagers.
Please be kind.
This was in the 90s,
didn't know anything about this. He just said it was weird. He said he would watch him flirt and
manipulate younger ones, but he thought it was innocent, and noticed the behavior more and more as they
got older, but never thought it was sinister. Then our daughter said, okay, so this makes me feel better.
When I was little, I had a, like a weird crush on Sean. I knew it was wrong because he was my
uncle, but I feel confident that nothing physical happened to me because I was never alone with him.
so somehow he was saying things to her, which is his MO.
My mother-in-law says he has Peter Pan syndrome
and blames all of his problems on his being stuck in his teenage years emotionally.
I think it's a cop out.
Also, I received a text this morning from the exchange coordinator.
It said, quote,
Hi, so as it turns out, Anne's ex-husband is going to move out and she is going to host.
He won't ever see the girl.
I really appreciate you telling us everything.
And then I responded with,
So the problem I have with that is my husband called his parents
before I ever spoke with you
to find out if he was going to live with them and they had no idea.
Sean had no idea.
Anne had no plans to tell you when she left him off the application.
Just so you know, she planned all along for him to be there
and you to never know about it.
She's untrustworthy.
She tried to get him to be a chaperone on one of these exchange trips after his first arrest.
You should also do a home visit.
The house is a shambles and not fit for an extra person.
I will leave it at that.
If they decide to let her host after all this, I don't know what.
They are putting themselves in crazy liability.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
Someone says they're still letting her host.
Oh my God.
And the O.P. responds and says,
I sent another email to the corporate contact I have.
This local one is a franchise owner who is friends with Ann.
I am kind of dumbfounded.
And another user says,
Have you told the school board that she lives with a convicted predator?
You should.
Not the asshole.
And the OPE responds and says,
It's a private school.
And then the OPE makes another post the same day.
and let's get into it.
I got in touch with their corporate office and said it was egregious that despite the info I had provided,
they would still be allowed to host, and that Anne had admitted to me in writing that she had omitted him from the application.
They did not put any references on the application who had known about his arrests.
She said that to me, plainly, when accusing me of being the one to rat her out.
They forwarded my complaint to the direction of the local office, and she emailed me to call her.
This happened to be the person who was Anne's friend.
I called her.
I explained everything in detail.
She was unaware of the magnitude of the situation.
I said, please, let me share with you the arrest reports.
I forwarded to her and understand what you were dealing with.
I said, I know you are friends, and she cut me off and immediately began to distance
herself from Anne, saying that they had worked together in the past. I explained my position as a
mandated reporter, my obligation to protect any incoming minor, and of course my own children,
and that I was 1,000% certain Anne had zero intention of moving Sean out of the house before
any student arrived. Despite any intentions, the optics are terrible. She agreed completely
and said that the liability was too great, and they would be taking them off,
the hosting list. I also told her about Anne's mother threatening me over this, and she was sympathetic
and offered to deny them over the home visit, and not because of any background check or living
situation. I told her that Anne already hates me, so it matters little what reason she gives them
for denial. And now let's get into some of the top comments. One person says, please speak to the
principal and school. Please.
Yes, she might lose her job and her license, which would damage their livelihood and is plausible concern for the kids,
but she absolutely should not be teaching children anymore.
And someone says 100%.
She has no business working with children, as she has no genuine interest in their welfare, clearly.
And we have never received another update from the OP.
Am I overreacting for thinking my boyfriend, 27?
male might be crushing on a teenager who's 15 female. So my boyfriend has had a celebrity
crush on a famous actress who is an adult but looks very young and plays teen roles,
which is always weirded me out a bit, but I haven't thought much of it. However, now he has
moved into the basement of a family friend who has been renting out his basement and that family
has a 15-year-old daughter who we can call Amy. Amy clearly looks like a minor and isn't
particularly developed for her age and she doesn't dress mature, jeans and a t-shirt every single day.
Ever since my boyfriend moved in there, he has talked about Amy every time I've seen him.
He talks about her hobbies, her friends, what she does in school, etc.
He has described her as the opposite of me by mentioning traits she has that he has told me he typically looks for in girls,
like extroversion, liking anime, and liking to cosplay.
Whenever he's with her, he does flirty things like taking her hat to wear for himself,
taking her jacket, and putting his arm around her.
He does it in front of his parents too much, which makes me think that it must not mean anything.
But the way he smiles and blushes really gives me thoughts that he's attracted to her.
One night, he also made a joke to me about sleeping, unclothed, and going to the kitchen to get some water,
and her seeing his junk, which did not give me good vibes.
I think I might be overreacting because my boyfriend is pretty immature for his age,
which makes me think that maybe he just gets along with teens.
teenagers more? Or maybe there just aren't a lot of people into anime in this town? But he talks
about her more than he has talked about anyone else. It's constant. I also think I might be
overreacting because he does it in front of people, including her parents. So it doesn't seem like
he's trying to hide how he acts around her. Am I overreacting? Or are they just friends?
Edit, a different family friend has already told the girl's parents that she is concerned about his behavior around her, so they've already been alerted.
I don't have their contact info, so I can't tell them myself. Also, this is selfish, but I am really hurt that he would do this to a child, and also hurt that I'm not enough for him.
Edit number two, I actually found the mom on Facebook, but she has new message requests and new friend requests turned off so I can't talk to her.
Edit number three, I got the mom's phone number through someone and sent her text.
I really hope this goes well.
I have a bad feeling that this will completely blow up on me.
Edit number four, the mom told me that her daughter tells her everything and that whatever I think happened with her.
her and my boyfriend never happened and to leave her family out of her issues with me and my boyfriend.
Well, at it number five, I had a horrible night because of something my boyfriend did,
and I really can't type up an update right now without breaking down.
But once my head is a little clearer, I will make a new post update.
Things have gotten pretty bad.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says, literally just took a training about preventing SA.
And one of the major facts they taught us was predators don't just manipulate their victims.
They manipulate the gatekeepers too.
They need the people protecting the kids to think they're trustworthy so they can get access.
That mom is going to hate herself if this plays out the way it is clearly headed.
And another user says,
I know Reddit generally says break up, and in this case, they are completely and utterly correct.
Break up. Tell the parents about your concerns and move on with your life.
You said you don't have the parents' contact info, but you do go see him at his place, right?
You could always tell them then, or tell someone trusted.
Who does know them and have a relationship with them?
Where they might listen more.
And then the O.P responds and says,
I sent the mom in text and here's what she sent me back.
Quote, hey, my name.
I was filled in with what you thought their relationship was.
My kid tells me everything and whatever you think happened, never happened.
Keep my family out of your issues with my boyfriend.
And someone else says, nope, just dump him.
Tell her parents about his unclothed joke, aka fantasy.
And someone else says, that poor girl,
is not safe. Tell the parents and drop your perverted creep of a boyfriend. And then the OP
comes back the next day with an update. And let's get into it. Update. I don't know if it's even
worth updating, but I went to the police. And they told me that unless I have enough evidence
to press charges, then I need to go to the courthouse to get a restraining order. They are closed,
so I'm going in the morning.
My boyfriend sent me a bunch of awful messages
and threatened to come to my apartment,
so I'm in a hotel for the night.
I'm pretty sure he had already tried to go to my apartment
based off of the voicemails he left me.
I'll try to get a restraining order in the morning.
Thank you, everyone, for your help,
except for the guy who messaged me,
clearly getting off on the thought of my boyfriend
showing this girl his junk.
I pretty much completely regret texting the mom,
and I wish that I just stayed out of this.
I think I really learned my lesson to not get involved in other people's business.
I feel so stupid too because clearly nothing intimate has happened between them.
I have autism and a sign of autism is an extreme sense of justice.
So I think I just started feeling a certain way and took it to the extreme.
So last night after I got off of work,
which was pretty late because I work at a bar,
he called me to keep me company as I walked home.
He told me that the girl's mom talked to him after I saw the text
and asked what I think is happening between him and the girl.
He said, he told the mom, that I think they're having intimacy.
I asked him why he said that because I have never said anything remotely similar to that
and I've never accused him of doing anything with
or having any feelings for that girl.
He told me that every day I tell him,
that they're having intimacy and that I'm delusional and crazy for forgetting that.
I just dropped it because there's no way to defend myself from that.
I said I wanted to break up with him because I don't like how he treats me,
and he said that I don't mean it, and I'm just going to come back to him,
but I said that I meant it and never wanted to see him again.
I ended up going to a bar on the way home.
I'm not a big drinker, and my boyfriend has never seen me drunk,
but I did get drunk at this bar to help me cope with everything.
While I was there, the bartender or someone else who knew him and recognized me,
I guess texted my boyfriend that I was there drunk,
so he started texting me saying that I was betraying him for going there.
I was stupid and drunk, so I texted him back instead of ignoring him like I should have.
He came to the bar to pick me up and kept saying that he's tired of having to babysit me
and that I need to come with him because I'm acting like a child
and can't take care of myself alone.
I went with him, which I regret,
but I was afraid of what would happen if I didn't.
Also keep in mind that this is the first time he knew of me being drunk,
so I think he saw this as an opportunity to a-word me.
The minute we got to his home, he R-worded me.
And I know that he knew I was too drunk to consent
because he was doing things he knew I wouldn't be okay with if I was sober.
And I mean violent stuff where he physically hurt me.
me. Afterwards, I was crying and told him that I don't want to see him anymore because he keeps
treating me horribly. He said that I'm actually the one treating me like shit and took a sword
from his closet. He has a collection and started physically blocking his bedroom door and pointed
the sword in my direction. He's a big guy, so there was no way I was leaving. I basically
ended up just apologizing because I was scared that if I didn't, he would seriously hurt me.
He said I couldn't leave until I was sober and said that I was mentally handicapped and can't make decisions myself.
Eventually, I got us to just hang out normally and calm things down and he let me leave.
Sorry if things are jumbled and confusing. I'm really emotional right now, so it's hard to think straight.
I'll also mention that I'm afraid of telling the police because they don't have any actual evidence of anything.
And one of the times I called the police, they sided with him and the other time they did nothing.
I'm afraid of authorities not doing anything, and then that emboldening him to do this to me again,
because he knows there won't be any consequences of him doing something to get revenge on me telling the police.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says, girl, I'm so sorry you went through that.
This is not your fault in any way.
I'm going to be an anti right now.
Alcohol is a dangerous drug, not a coping mechanism.
It's a literal poison that mushes your brain functions.
The worst time to have a drink is when you feel vulnerable or are dealing it with dangerous people.
This behavior will lead you to increasingly worse situations.
Stop it today.
He told her mom that lie knowing it was a lie.
He did it to make you look like a crazy liar, so that mom lowers her guard against him and raises it against you.
You did the right thing.
The right thing is often messy.
You're in shock right now and not thinking clearly.
Call your best friend in a DV shelter ASAP.
Consider reporting the R word.
You will need to get tested and the morning after pill.
If possible, move out if your place.
Delete your socials and change your number.
Blocking isn't enough.
Borrow a friend's dog or consider being a temporary foster for a big one.
It's not really the time to make a long commitment to an animal.
Fostering will give you the option to keep the dog later on when things are more clear.
Most rescuers and shelters will pay for food and expenses.
I'm a survivor and never fully slept until I got a slightly reactive,
think scary bark and always protective dog.
Now I think she's always listening and will give me the heads up for any potential danger.
While she's not an attack dog, she gives me comfort and enough time to escape,
if something went down.
Your job and neighbors need to be notified so they don't divulge details and they can warn you
if they see him.
Your job shouldn't allow him on the premises or put his calls through.
Notify all your acquaintances and family as these types will go to the ends of the earth
to get a scrap of info about you.
Consider a restraining order.
There are a ton of steps to take and you need to exhaust each and every one.
He has imprisoned you,
arwards you,
and threatened you both with a weapon
with future violence.
You can't take this seriously enough.
He is dangerous.
Now is the time to reach out to everyone you know
until you get the help you need.
And then the O.P. responds and says,
Thank you so much for being understanding.
I haven't called the DV shelter yet
because I know that I'm not in immediate danger
and don't want to take those resources away from anyone
but I have to go to the police and I'm currently staying in a hotel until I can go to the courthouse in the morning for a restraining order.
I don't have any friends in this town because a year ago I moved across the country.
The only friends I did have were my boyfriend's friends, but they all hate me and refuse to speak to me now.
I do appreciate the people mentioning dogs, but I do have a very anxious kitty at home who wouldn't be able to handle it,
and I don't live in an area where I would feel comfortable walking a dog.
I did grow up with St. Bernard's, so I understand the care that goes into big dogs.
He didn't finish, but I know that he could have possibly got me pregnant,
so I will be taking the morning after pill.
To be completely honest, he refuses to wear any sort of protection
and doesn't want me on birth control because of the weight gain,
so I've had intimacy like that with him a lot.
I have told some of the faculty at my university, and I've told my landlord, but I'm honestly
kind of embarrassed to tell anyone else myself. And then that commenter replies to the Opie again,
and the commenter says, the embarrassment is misplaced and normal. He should be embarrassed and ashamed,
but we know that's not the case. Guilt and shame go hand and hand with these incidents.
Unfortunately, it's the victim that carries them. If you're out of university,
there should be counselors on campus.
Get one ASAP.
Make it a woman.
It's hard to feel safe divulging details
to men after this happens.
She should be able to direct you
to support groups, women's groups,
and other resources.
You might be able to get acute meds for anxiety.
So proud of the steps you've already taken.
You're doing great.
Deaf get the pill.
Don't take chances.
It's not expensive and it's usually not painful.
I'm so sorry he's treated you
so badly for so long
and then this violence betrayal.
Seriously get tested for SCIs once he've healed.
You'll need to get tested in any areas he violated.
You can't trust someone like this to be honest about their past.
Heads up, though.
This type of trauma makes these appointments difficult.
I should know.
I shake and cry every time.
I just let the doctor know beforehand,
only go to women, and ask for the smallest speculum.
I also bring a stuffed animal because my trauma is bad.
You could consider bringing a rope from home or even a blanket to give more comfort.
You've already taken some important and difficult steps like talking to your landlord.
Great job, I disagree though.
I do believe you're in grave danger.
I read a lot of women's stories, so I think in patterns.
My heart is breaking for you.
It won't always be this bad.
Do you have old friends you can call or family you trust?
And then the OPE makes another post a few days later titled,
Am I Overreacting by Getting a Temporary Restraining Order against my boyfriend?
And it reads as follows.
The hearing for a permanent restraining order is in a couple of days,
and I don't even know if I should testify against them anymore.
Basically, I thought he was threatening me by saying things like,
if you say that again, I don't know what I'll do next.
And throwing things next to me.
His friends are telling me that it was my fault for not realizing he was upset and escalating the situation more to the point where he was doing that.
Also, he never actually hurt me, so I think I overreacted.
Also, judgment.
Everyone is telling me that I'm delusional and bipolar, so I feel like I can't trust my judgment because of that.
They have been saying that I'm ruining his life over something he can't even do, physically hurt me,
and that I'm only doing this because of my delusional.
illusions. And now let's get into some of the top comments. One user says, judges don't grant
permanent ROs for no reason. That order to have one in place and then get yourself checked out.
If you are bipolar and misinterpreting the situation, you can ask for the RO to be terminated.
And then the OP replies and says, they didn't ask for proof when I got it. I just had to fill out
an incident report. My boyfriend and his friends are saying I lied and exaggerated on the incident
I don't think I did, but they also have been saying I'm delusional, so I guess I'm worried that
I am delusional and did actually lie and exaggerate things.
And someone comments and says, what did it say?
And the OPE responds and says, the piece of paper had a bunch of different kinds of incidents
and had me fill in the ones that have happened with me and my boyfriend.
I don't completely remember the ones I filled in off the top of my head, but I do remember
I filled out blocking entrances, threatening to hurt me, coming to my home, coming to my work,
hitting objects around me, throwing objects around me, and SA. And then a commenter responds and says,
it's simple. A judge granted your temporary restraining order because they didn't think that you were
overreacting. They granted it based on the evidence that you presented. And if they make it
permanent that's going to be because you presented evidence that meant the requirements of a
restraining order. They don't give restraining orders just because someone asked for them. They give
them when they think there's a legitimate threat to your safety. I don't know if you've done this
already, but your county probably has a domestic violence hotline and they should be able to
send you up with a social worker and victim's advocate. Ask whether or not they have low-cost
options for therapy. I think that talking through this with a professional would be really helpful
because they can give you some information on how the actions you described are often precursors
to more serious abuse. They can also help you do a risk assessment and figure out what steps
you can take to be safer. And another commenter says mental abuse is just as bad as physical
abuse. Have you seen a therapist about it? You may be surrounded by enablers. People,
who enable your boyfriends and bad behavior like his friends and family.
And the OP responds and says,
I do have a therapist, but I just started seeing her,
and I'm only able to see her every two to three weeks because she's really busy.
I live in a small town,
so resources for mental health are very limited.
And unfortunately, we have never received another update from the OP,
so we don't know what happened with this entire case,
But I really hope that the O.P. is doing better now.
I hope that the O.P.'s ex-boyfriend is in jail now.
And the girl that he was staying with is okay and was not violated.
I really hope that guy's in jail. That guy's a monster.
O.P.'s relationship with her former high school teacher.
And by the way, the O.P. is 17.
And her teacher is 22.
And let's get into it.
Burner account for privacy.
I'm feeling really conflicted right now, and I want to get some opinions before I'm making
any decisions.
Writing this whole situation out makes it sound unreal, but I'm trying to give the full picture.
Some background.
I am a rising senior at a private boarding high school and turned 17 in January.
During junior year, we had an internment teacher, let's call him A,
who taught for over a semester while our usual AP literature teacher.
was on maternity leave.
A's 22, straight out of a prestigious college,
and basically everything I could want in a man.
I had a major crush on him.
Hot, extremely intelligent, and very polite.
Our relationship was strictly teacher-student for many months,
but I'd attend office hours a lot,
and a couple of my friends, both guys and gals,
started an informal book club with him.
I was a good student in his class, tried extra hard on the essays, and generally established a friendly
rapport. Fast forward to early May, and my parents are throwing a grad party for my older sister.
Turns out that A is the son of one of their friends from college, so he turns up at the venue.
Me and my friends want to say hi, and I ended up alone with him in the weird pagoda slash portals.
feature thing. I am literally dying of embarrassment while I write this, but I ended up giving him an
awkward sort of peck on the lips. He very gently removed himself from the situation, and I wanted to
just dig a hole and lay in there. Things got super awkward at school, and I avoided him,
but two weeks ago, I got an email from A asking to talk. I go to his office after school,
and he asks about college plans, etc.
Then we have a nice conversation about pros and cons of being an English major.
I say something stupid about the elephant in the room, and he apologizes.
Effing apologizes for doing or saying anything untoward.
He gives me his phone number and tells me to call if I need any help with college essays.
So I thank him and leave, thinking that's the end of it.
I text him a few times after school ends for help with scholarship apps, and we have some more chat.
Lo and behold, crush comes back.
And then out of the blue on Friday, I get a text asking to meet up at a bookstore.
I'm effing giddy, so I drive there and he gives a speech about being conflicted but respecting my intellect
and wanting to see what kind of places I'll go.
I end up kissing him again and we agree to text.
So that's where I'm at.
I can't tell if I'm a girl being manipulated who can't recognize it, or whether or whether
this has the potential to become a respectful relationship. On one hand, I feel incredibly lucky.
I'm not exactly inexperienced with intimacy, and I'd like to think that I know what kind of guy I'm
into. A fits all the criteria. Conversations with him are always deep, and we have basically
the same taste in literature. I also feel bad about thinking this way, but I know that A could be
incredibly helpful in the college application process. On the other hand, there's a five-year
age gap in some unusual dynamics. He doesn't think you'll be teaching again next year. Does that make
it better? But he has an internship lined up with a publishing firm in my city. I feel that he
always has been respectful towards me. And the only times we kissed were when I made a move.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Edit 1.
The DMs calling me promiscuous, need to stop, thanks.
Edit number two, some additional info.
Number one, my parents would probably not care.
My mom is 50 and my dad is nearly 80.
So there's that.
Number two, I was high when I kissed him,
so it's not like I just go around making out with older men on a regular basis.
Please stop DMing me.
Number three, he has no plans to continue teaching in the future.
I am no longer his student.
Number four, our conversations are dry as F and mostly academic.
Number five, my parents are close friends with his parents.
And number six, I am inclined to text him and end the relationship for now after senior comments.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says, wait until you're at least 18 and don't make any college decisions based
on him. Live your life. Another user says, I know how you feel, girl. Some months back, I also had a bit of a
crush on this 22 year old, but I turned 17 in October. It's super common for teenagers to get
crushes on a people, a little bit older than them, but not the other way around. It sucks,
but he shouldn't be into you or pursuing you, at least, if he really is a mature and good person.
People in their 20s should not be into teenagers. Best of luck. And someone, someone
says avoid avoid avoid anyone who's hitting on you while you're a teenager is displaying poor judgment at
best anyone who's hitting on you while slash after you're in their class or under their supervision
especially before you're 18 is exercising incredibly poor judgment it's not about you
i'm sure you're a very rad individual with interesting thoughts and great personality
this is about them and them not knowing what is and isn't inappropriate and if they can't be trusted
to be appropriate in this situation it casts a shadow on other situations where their good judgment
is required and the stakes are higher intimacy drinking and driving etc does that make sense
also some dudes will say anything to get into your pants hate to break it to you you're not immune to it
and you'll learn to detect it better with time.
This guy sounds like he knows how to flatter you.
Be wary.
I don't give a F about his job or career.
I'm worried about the emotional impact on you.
If he's for real, he's not going to balk or bitch or whine at you
if you suggest you guys wait a couple years to continue this.
And someone else says gross and inappropriate,
you're not mature for your age,
he's immature for his.
and someone else says high school teacher for 20 years he's a predator and contact immediately
he has a lot to potentially lose here so i would recommend telling an adult you trust he's not who
you think he is you're seeing traits in him that aren't there more than likely these are positive
traits you want in a future mate and you're projecting them onto him it's really common at your age
Most adults can identify a few exes that fall into this category.
Best of luck and stay safe.
And someone replies and says concur.
High school teacher here.
16 years in and it's my second career.
This is an adult in a position of authority over you.
It is beyond inappropriate of him.
I hate, hate, hate shows like pretty little liar
for making this sort of thing seem romantic and lovely.
It's not.
It's grotes.
And someone else says, I'm 22 years old and also work at a high school. I'm telling you,
this is not normal. This is exactly what they warn us when we start this job. He is crossing so
many lines and boundaries. No 22-year-old guy is with a 17-year-old for innocent and pure reasons.
He is behaving inappropriately and he is a predator. You feel weird about this because you know this
is wrong and he is wrong. Please listen to your gut. If he was really such a nice guy,
he would never have put you into this position. Notice how he doesn't outright reject your advances
and instead let's you make them a next move? This is a game. He is in position of power
and he abused it. He is not a gentleman. He is a creep. Please tell your parents or a trusted
adult. He needs to be fired and never allowed near children again.
Sadly, a lot of creeps enter the teaching profession to prey on younger people.
I'm so sorry you're going through this.
And then the OP posts an update later that day, and let's get into the update.
This reads,
I spent a long while trying to reconcile my image of A with how you guys described his behavior,
but it just wasn't working.
So when he asked me to get in a public park,
I know everyone go boo.
I said yes.
We talked about life, exchanged some travel stories, and got lunch, among other things.
It was a nice morning.
Spending time with him gave me some more substance to ponder.
And here is what I've decided.
Number one, I'm an idiot.
Number two, he's a hot, intelligent, romantic idiot.
Number three, I am quite young.
Number four, he is also.
quite young, but in a different way.
Number five.
I don't want this to consume my summer because as much as getting laid would be fun,
getting into college would be better.
Number six, this is not manipulating because he's just effing clueless,
and we're both exercising bad judgment.
Number seven, I'm trying to phrase this without sounding like an asshole,
but this sort of thing is normalized in our social circle.
My parents, his parents, most of their friends,
think finance bros with trophy wives, which is probably why he thinks it's fine.
Number eight, I'm starting to think that I might be a bit numb to unhealthy age slash power dynamics given my upbringing.
And number nine, this could still be very damaging to his reputation.
So I texted him this.
Hey, A, private irrelevant stuff.
I've been thinking about the past few weeks, and I've decided that I would like to hold off on
any sort of relationship until I graduate.
I'd like to believe that you're well-intentioned,
but given your previous job and our age difference,
I'd rather be safe.
I still really like you,
but I think moving forward right now
would be bad judgment on both our parts.
All the best with your job stuff.
And he responds with,
private info, I completely understand.
I'm so sorry if my behavior made you feel uncomfortable or threatened.
Please talk with their parents' names
if you feel this way.
and know that I take full responsibility for what has happened.
You are kind and beautiful,
and I know that you will go far in whatever you choose to do.
If it would make things easier,
I won't contact you again unless you reach out first.
Please go live life to its fullest,
and don't hold back on anyone's account.
So that's it, I guess.
I see this as best case scenario,
though I'm baffled as to why he straight-up suggested
that I talk to my parents.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says, you definitely made the right decision and said it well.
I know a guy who is in the same exact situation slash age gap, gender is reversed.
He's now married to said teacher and they have two kids.
They reconnected after he graduated college.
If it's meant to be, it'll happen at a more appropriate time.
And someone else says, he said to talk to your parents because he's not trying to hide anything shady.
So I think that's a good thing.
He wants you to reach out to trusted adults if you feel unsafe.
And someone else says,
I first met my husband when I was under 18 and he was over 21.
I had a huge crush on him.
He was polite but pretty much ignored me.
Life went on and when I was 21,
we happened to end up in the same city and both be single.
We started hanging out as friends, then started dating,
and have now been married 23 years.
And someone else says,
this is definitely the right choice.
My advice is to keep your distance and experience college.
For a lot of people,
freshman year of college is an extremely stressful time
and a time of change.
Going into that, dating anyone is stressful,
but especially someone older in a position of authority.
If in a year or two,
college you guys are both still interested,
you could give it a try.
But the best thing right now is distance to let yourself grow.
And to gain trust that,
you'll stay away unless you stay otherwise.
And then the OP comes back with another update a few months later, and let's get into it.
This reads, update on super old post about getting with former teacher LMAFAO.
Hey guys, I know that it's been a long while and most people are probably forgotten about this,
but I logged onto this account and had a few messages from very concerned slash interested people,
one in an update on this situation.
Kind of crazy how this has stayed on some people's minds for so long,
but I guess it is a weird post.
I have a feeling some of you might not be happy with me,
but I really have given this a lot of thought,
and I think things will be okay.
My parents had a Christmas party two months ago,
and A was invited since he was on break from his internship in the city.
He texted me for the first time in about six.
six months to ask if I was comfortable with him being there. Green flag, question mark? And I said yes.
I also shared the news that I'd been accepted to my top school. We didn't interact much that day
since there were so many people, but spent some time together during break to celebrate.
We were both freshly single again, and after spending more time with each other,
I think the decision to just give it was mutual. I'll be going to college in the same city as him,
so we will keep in touch until then.
I'm also 18 now, and he's definitely not going to be anywhere near a classroom.
I know this is still so questionable, but we gave it this half a year to cool off and the chemistry is still insane.
It'll also be nice having someone I know well in the city next fall.
And let's get into some of the top comments.
Someone says, am I the only one who thinks this isn't really bad?
And someone else says, dude, you need to see a therapist.
This is not going to end well, especially with the age difference and power dynamic.
Date people at your own age first.
Like, seriously.
And someone else says, this is a gross predator.
And another user says, it's questionable because he manipulated you since he were young.
He's an adult and he should be in jail.
Stay away from him.
And then the OP comes back to years later with an update.
and let's get into it. This reads,
I was trying to log on to Reddit to ask a question about subletting and I found this old
account. I don't know if people still care about this situation, but I had a lot of fun
reading my old posts and wanted to update you guys. Me and A, my former high school teacher,
Gasp, are still dating officially for about two years. I'm a rising junior in college now and I
don't regret a thing. I feel like I've been having a relatively, a
normal college experience, and he's still working in the same city as me. We are happy. We see each
other nearly every weekend and spend breaks together. It helps that our families are close. I did not
end up pregnant and barefoot on a farm somewhere, alas. I'm still thankful for all the advice
that people gave me. It's easy for me to acknowledge in retrospect that we were both incredibly
stupid and immature, and that the situation could have gone wrong in so many different ways.
We were just very lucky.
If I had a younger sister,
I would have also probably advised against this relationship in no uncertain terms.
Do as I say and not as I do.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says,
Ew.
And someone else says, update us when you catch him with his hands down the pants of another underage victim in the future.
You're a fun college girl right now, but considering he was willing to cross
lines with an underage girl, what makes you think he won't do it again?
And then the OP comes back a few months later with another update and let's get into it.
This reads, I regret not having provided more context because I didn't expect anybody would
really see my post.
The hate I'm getting, DMs, comments, etc. strange.
If you actually believe I'm a victim, why in the world would aggression towards me
be an appropriate response.
I think some of you just hate women
and are looking for any excuse to bully one.
Part of me, really, really,
doesn't want to defend or explain my relationship
to the internet.
But this is anonymous anyway, so the stakes are low.
It's been two years.
That's a non-negligible amount of time
to have dated someone.
He's been unfailingly kind and understanding with me.
I've never felt used or abused
or even remotely.
unsafe. I've never been pressured into intimacy or asked to drop out of school and have his babies.
He's been remarkably supportive of my career. And at his suggestion, we didn't FaceTime or hang out
nearly as much during my freshman year of college because he wanted me to develop my own friend group
and spend time building my own social life. He is the opposite of controlling. We've obviously
had many conversations about how we met, my personal assessment of the situation,
which is, no doubt, deluded and hysterical, is that it was very close to being untenable.
I truly believe that in the vast, vast majority of situations, what I experienced would have led to
an unhealthy dynamic. I do not advocate for others to pursue this path, and I would be concerned
if a friend told me that she was experiencing something similar. I think my particular situation
ended up being okay for a few reasons.
Number one, he was always going to be a student teacher.
There were no plans to be in a classroom ever again.
Our relationship, or rather me throwing myself at him,
started with the shared knowledge between us
that there was two weeks of school left.
We'd never interacted in a non-professional way before then.
Number two, we did find other people in the interminum period.
I spent three months in another relationship, which ended on good terms, and he was on and off
of someone. When we reconnected, the chemistry was still there. Only then, removed from the
classroom context, did we even think about talking more often. Number three, while talking,
we found out that we had truly rare alignment of interests. We play the same instrument,
read the same books, watch the same movies, like the same people, have similar values,
and senses of humor and think about the world in very compatible ways.
Our conversations flow.
I've been in four serious relationships in the past, all with people my age, and have never
felt a connection like this.
Number four, the phrase mature for age obviously carries a lot of heavy and problematic
connotations.
My frontal lobe is nowhere near done developing.
I look back on who I was a year ago and feel different.
but, and I say this knowing that I'll get me absolutely clown,
I'm not an impassal, I'm generally self-possessed and rational,
I'm academically gifted and pretty emotionally intelligent.
I also feel confident in wielding my agency to protect myself.
None of you know me, but as the world's foremost expert on myself,
I'm just going to assert some things.
No doubt I have growing to do, and that I'm still coming into my own.
but that doesn't strip me of all agency.
If I felt like the situation was unhealthy,
I would have broken up with him.
I've done so in past relationships and I'll do it again.
If I ever feel like the situation is veering off the very steady and happy track it's on,
I will also break up with him.
But as it goes right now, I don't feel the need to do that.
Across two years of knowing this man,
I've never been shown anything other than healthy attachment in love.
I hope that it continues.
in this vein for my own sake.
And now it's getting to some of the top comments.
One user says,
imagine going online and exposing your partner as a creep
and boasting about being manipulated.
You could not waterboard that info out of me.
Another user quotes the OP when the OP says,
I'm not an impotile.
And the commenter says,
honestly, this is so scary.
Nobody is calling you dumb or.
impassal. People are calling out your
amazing boyfriend who saw nothing wrong with pursuing a young girl.
Are you even as old as him now when he started pursuing you?
Please update us when he reached that age and looked at the teenagers and tell us
if you would ever see yourself pursuing one of them.
At his age, I was working at a corporate job with young interns.
Not even as young as you.
They looked and sounded like children to me.
You'll be grossed out at the thought of such a thing, and no, men and women aren't
different and women don't mature quicker. That is the stuff predators say to get away with stuff
like this. I also saw you giving examples of other people around you with age gap relationships,
but you never said if one of them was a teenager at the time. We can say all of this all day.
I know it doesn't matter at the end of the day. You are going to grow up one day and realize
what really happened. And another user says, it's not normal.
for an adult to be attracted to a teenager.
It's great he's not physically or assaing you,
but he needs psychiatric help.
In a couple of years, look at 17-year-olds
and see if you could see them as romantic or intimate partners.
If you have a normal healthy brain, you won't,
because they look like children to you.
If you do, well, you can go do that together.
Edit, I actually realized he probably set his eyes on you when you were 16,
gave you the number and initiated texting all the time.
I'm so sorry, girl.
The thing is, you might end up like Celine Dion,
and who still vehemently defends her late husband and clearly loved him a lot.
Or maybe open your eyes one day,
but either way, both are painful conditioning.
I do want to note when you said, quote,
or rather me throwing myself at him,
this is a very, very classic defense of an adult predator
that you can use casually.
And someone else says, least delusional Redditor, in my opinion.
O.P., I'm going to be so real here.
The fact you had to make several posts offending the fact your adult boyfriend kissed a then 17-year-old is already red flag.
I don't agree with the comments and DMs calling you horrible and aggressive, but I'm sorry.
The fact you contradict yourself so many times.
Admit that you likely have a bad way of looking at relationships because of the fact your family and friends all have done this behavior or have been victim to this behavior.
Well, acting like you know it all is probably why people are calling you an idiot.
The fact you had to justify the fact your boyfriend pursued you when you were a minor with,
quote, we have a rare alignment, shows me you're still too young to understand what deep crap you're in.
By the time you're in your late 20s or 30s, or if you have kids, and they ask you how you met your father,
you'll either look back and realize how effed the dynamic was in the beginning.
You're not stupid O.P., but you will.
are incredibly naive and because you are an intelligent person at some point you'll look back and
realize how not great the situation is frankly what i've said doesn't scratch the surface on how naive
your post comes across but i really implore you to think about how this looks on the outside
and we have never received another update from the opi my nephew might be a product of our word
and possibly my husband's child.
I know exactly where your mind goes when you read that title,
but I promise this is a little different situation.
I met my husband, John, around three years ago.
Not too long after, when I was being introduced to the family,
I met his brother's fiancé Shelley.
John brought me aside right after I initially met her
and told me he had something to tell me.
Shelly and her fiancé Mike, John's brother, had been trying to conceive for a few years with no luck.
So one drunken night at a party, my husband was passed out on the couch and woke up to Shelly, well, R-wording him.
Immediately, he got her off and told his brother.
It was a huge shit show.
Her thought process was that if she could get pregnant by John, Mike would never know and think the baby is his.
They decided not to report it and kept it amongst the family.
Mike was dead set on leaving her.
But guess who ended up pregnant shortly after?
Shelly.
So, of course, Mike wanted a baby more than anything and decided to keep Shelly around for the sake of their little family.
Shelly and Mike had been together since they were teen.
teenagers. And I could tell even from the first encounter that they had their fair share of
relationship issues. At the end of the day, though, they just wanted what was best for their
child. The whole situation around Shelly made me uncomfortable, honestly. I could not understand
how she could just do that to John and expect everyone to just forgive her and forget. My mother-in-law
pushed the forgiveness the most because she wanted her grandson and a happy family. Every event
I went to with Shelly there.
She always acted odd toward me.
Eventually, her and Mike stopped making plans with us and ignored us for months on end.
On a side note, my husband had a son that was just born right when I met him.
So I also have a stepson who is about the same age as Mike's son.
Shelly has met him maybe five to eight times.
We'll get back to that later.
Q one night we get a phone call from Mike.
He said he couldn't take it anymore and left Shelley.
They were on the rocks for years, but he said he honestly just couldn't get over what she did to John.
She took their child and left, and was completely surprised Mike wanted to break up.
At first, the breakup was okay.
After a day or two, they agreed on a custody schedule and child support outside of court,
and both signed a agreed-upon contract they wrote.
I guess Shelly's friend got into her head and told her she deserved more.
So Shelly retained a lawyer.
and now refuses to let Mike see his child at all until a custody order is in place.
Mike is obviously completely broken over this.
He is legally his child's father.
But in our state, he has no custodial rights until after court.
He doesn't know when he'll see his son again.
We gave him our lawyer's info and he's going for 50-50,
but hasn't heard back much since it's the holidays.
Here's where it gets crazy.
Shelly called Mike the other night and says she wants paternity test from both guys.
If Mike isn't the biological father, she wants to come after John for child support, etc.
I honestly don't think she can legally, since Mike already had his ducks in a row and has been his kid's dad since day one.
Mike loves his son, regardless of biology.
John loves his nephew, but knows he is Mike's son.
no matter the outcome.
The only person going to hurt from this
is my nephew.
The whole family already knows there's a chance
that my nephew is John's, but
he's Mike's son. He looks
incredibly closer to Mike than John anyway.
On the other end of this fiasco,
my stepson, Shelley showed
very little interest in my stepson because
she was preoccupied with her own son
of the same age. She made it clear
she was not a fan of his biological
mom. My husband and
Biomom dated a mere weeks. Shelly didn't really know her well either. Well, after the breakup,
Shelly really has no ties to my stepson or our family anymore. I have no idea why, but
she decided to bring my nephew over to Biomom's house to see my stepson. She's been there at least
three times a week. It creeps me out. He's not her nephew anymore. And they didn't have a relationship
anyway. She stole the Christmas gifts that Mike had bought for him and brought them to Bio's
Moms. Biomom played a lot of crazy games with John in the beginning of the custody arrangement,
and I can see those exact same games starting to be played with Mike now.
Anyway, I just wanted to get this off my chest. If my nephew is biologically my husband's,
it's not a huge deal to me. I am more concerned about my husband's well-being, knowing that this
nephew could be a product of his S.A.
And having to remind myself of that every time he sees him.
I'm worried about how my nephew is dealing with this and when I'll see him.
How would he feel in a few years if he finds out his uncle is his dad?
I just honestly hope she changes her mind and drops this all for the sake of her kid.
Edit, yes, we have an attorney.
Yes, R-wordist can still get custody and go for child support in my state.
yes, I know Shelley sucks.
Shelly and Mike were never married,
and thanks for the insensitive comments.
I should not have to explain that
it is completely possible for men to be R-worded too.
No, John would have never in a million years
hooked up willingly with Shelley.
Shelly verbally admitted to the R-word.
Yes, we will all be getting therapy.
Unfortunately, it's just a crappy situation
we have to deal with. My heart just goes out to my nephew and hopes whatever happens,
he's okay. He is the biggest victim. And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says, honestly, I would say fight fire with fire. If she wants to play games, go forward with
the R-word charge. She seems to be on a power trip and needs to be brought back down to reality.
and the OP response and says,
we're going to do if she continues to pursue the DNA test and all that.
For the sake of my nephew,
I want to do as little future damage for him as possible,
just in case she's all talk.
And if they can grow up a little bit,
we are going to see how things go first.
And someone else says this was nauseating to read.
And another user says,
why aren't they bringing up the R word to get her custody completely revoked?
Why isn't your husband fighting to not have a R-wardess near his son?
These men do not have their ducks in a row.
I would be extremely concerned with her raising any child with her morals.
Would she encourage her son to stealth or tamper with because the son loves a girl and wants to keep her?
Their rug sweeping is going to blow up in their, in their child's face.
Wouldn't trust their mom either.
She seems fine with her sons being abused, as long as she's.
She got grandchildren.
Does your stepmoms know that she's buddy buddy with a Rwardess?
And the OP response and says,
Because in our state,
Rwardists have equal rights to their children.
The lawyer said we can file SA charges,
but they won't have much effect on the custody hearing.
She's only been around his son a handful of times.
Never ever unsupervised and never even alone in the same room.
And yes,
stepson's mom knows exactly.
what she's doing being buddy buddy with a R-wordist.
And someone replies and says,
You guys need to play dirty because these two will otherwise suck the life out of you all.
The R-word charges will affect the sister-in-law if she ends up in prison.
No more nice guys.
Time for weapons of mass destruction.
Try to get her to admit to the R-word in writing.
Text or something.
And the OP response and says,
after discussing it, we're only going to bring on R-word charges if she tries to bring my husband into it with a DNA test.
For the sake of my nephew, I don't want him having to worry about this mess when he's older if he doesn't want to.
I can't imagine the thought of him knowing he was the product of R-word.
If he was, or that his mom is a R-wordist.
If she does change and get her life together.
And then the OPE comes back a few days later with an update.
and let's get into it.
This is not the update I hoped I would be writing,
but things really took a turn.
I hope this subreddit allows updates,
otherwise I can post somewhere else for those interested.
Before I begin,
I'd like to add that very soon
after Mike's breakup with Shelley
and separation from his son.
He met a woman.
We all thought it was too much too soon
because he moved in with her within a couple of weeks.
It was a very fast-paced whirlwind relationship
In which she brought a son around 10 years old
This will all come into play later
Mike was obviously infatuated with her at first
But we urged him to pump the brakes
He was so emotionally volatile from the breakup
And not seen his son
She was going through some major life changes
Too I won't get into
But their relationship seemed to really build up
on them trying to take care of each other.
We tried to be happy for him.
We have not met her,
but no, she sent Shelly some very nasty
You Are a Horrible Mother texts.
Anyway, one afternoon, Mike texted John.
He asked about John's custody schedule with his son
because he was thinking about
what kind of arrangements he wanted with my nephew.
Mike told John that he wanted the exact opposite
week-to-week schedule that John had,
so that my nephew would be there on the same.
same weeks she had her kids. John told him that if he took that schedule, our sons would never
see each other. Mike said that he needed to have his son on those weeks because his son needed to
grow up with her kid. And also, we need breaks from the kids. This comment really rubbed me the wrong
way. He was a full time before, and suddenly he needs a break from the child he hasn't seen in weeks.
He said it was going to be hard raising two children and needs the alternate weeks alone.
What?
John made a comment that it was a messed up that he hasn't seen his kids in so long,
and he's already so worried about having a break.
Plus, he barely knows this new woman, and he's already raising her child.
Mike came back and told John,
It is all your fault that this is happening.
John and Mike went no contact after that comment.
I could not believe he just blamed it on John.
So from then on, we received updates from Mother-in-law.
We are on a waiting list, so haven't gone into therapy yet.
Generally, we are in a depressive funk and just had this worry looming over us every single day.
One night, Mother-in-law calls and tells us that Mike made up his mind and cannot raise his son if he isn't his.
He wants John to take a paternity test with him immediately
and was trying to find out our address.
We recently moved.
I was speechless.
After the years of him and Shelley trying to get John to be a donor,
him wanting in a family,
raising his son is his,
and he wants to give it all up if he's not biologically his son,
I've been raising John's son as my own.
And if we split and I was given opportunity for custody,
I would take it in a heartbeat.
I just couldn't fathom abandoning a child I raised, even if they are not biologically my own.
John and I cried for a few days for just so many reasons.
John confided it in me and said he didn't know if he could actually take in his nephew and raise him if he is his.
He didn't know if he could love and look at his son the same way after what happened to Shelley.
I wish we were in therapy already, but I told him I loved him and completely understood him.
I don't know if it would be fair to raise him and not be able to look at him and love him as the same as the other child when he'd be seen as arwardess every single day.
I could tell this whole situation really broke him.
Mother-in-law came back and said that Mike made his decision because Shelley told him that John and her had a six-month-long affair.
She fabricated some text messages as proof.
John said he did not and would never ever do that to his brother.
and would never, ever see Shelley that way.
Mother-in-law relayed that to Mike, but it didn't make much difference.
If his son was not biologically his, he was going full swing into the courts to do everything he could to get himself out of the situation.
Shelly sent John a voluntary paternity notice in the mail, and I could have thrown up when I saw it.
We were in legal mode, and our lawyer advised us not to go through with it.
It came right from the child support office.
We assume Mike was now actually cooperating with Shelley, and they were now both out to get John,
convinced they could just push the responsibility onto him so Mike could get out of being a parent,
and Shelley would have a hefty child support check coming in, probably.
Mike's new girlfriend started posting things on Facebook about how great Mike was with her son,
how they were the best buddies and all that.
Something clicked in my head with one of these posts.
I honestly think she was trying to get Mike to push away.
his son, so her son could have them all to himself. I think Mike was playing right into it
and would have happily rejected his son for this more mature kid he didn't have to put work in for.
This is not the Mike I knew, but John said he's acting exactly like their own absent father.
Mike wanted his son not to be his. John again had been no contact with Mike since those previous
texts and would not be going in with Mike to take the paternity test. For brothers,
unless you pay for an extensive test,
they usually want both to come in
because they can be so genetically similar.
So I received emails from Mike,
asking me if John had gone in for a test yet,
saying he needed to know and needed to know very soon.
My ex-girlfriend texted John as well,
saying the same thing.
They needed to know very soon.
Mike contacted me and kept bringing up the affair
like it was supposed to make me angry with John.
I never responded.
His girlfriend texted John and told him
he must be waiting to get ordered by the court.
John started questioning himself.
He was drinking heavily at the time he was R-word.
So he wondered if he just didn't remember having an affair.
I told him even if he did, the R-word still happened regardless
and being in a relationship with someone does not assume consent,
especially if he was blackout drunk and she was stone-cold sober.
After days of worrying, wondering if Mike got his results back, we got a call from mother-in-law.
Mike is the biological father.
John and I cried with relief.
Mother-in-law said that the extensive test came back 99.9% positive that Mike was his father.
She said, Mike said, screw it, I guess I'll go for custody.
I would have thought he'd be happy, but it just doesn't sound like it.
He completely deleted his son from his soul.
social media during this weird limbo time if not knowing. Mother-in-law said he didn't make attempts
to contact Shelley to see his son. Shelly's been telling her son that Mike abandoned him and doesn't
love him anymore. I wonder how Mike's new girlfriend feels about him actually being the father.
Mother-in-law said Shelley called the child support office and told him not to pursue John anymore,
which I'm shocked she did. She also told Mike she completely made up the child support office. She also told Mike she completely
made up the affair because she was still upset about the breakup. She only hasn't brought her son
over to my stepmom's house at all since the first couple of times. I'm hoping my stepson's mom
realizes her intentions and shuts that down, especially since they are only cousins now,
not brothers. I was impatient to post this update, so we have not heard yet from our lawyer
regarding pressing any sort of SA charges. I know we might get some backlash for this, but
we're honestly on the fence about it.
John has been through so much.
After just living in fear for the past couple of months and not feeling safe in our own home,
I know he just wants to be done with it.
We might wait to make a decision after talking to a counselor and our lawyer.
In the end, we need to do what's best for our family.
After all of this, we will probably not see our nephew for a very long time, if not ever again.
It breaks my heart, and I hope he's okay.
Part of me still wants John to press charges,
but I understand if he wants to be done with that chapter of his life and move on.
I hope my stepson will be able to understand why he won't be seen his cousin.
They didn't see each other much anyway.
John does not see himself ever being able to let Mike back into our lives again,
and I don't blame him.
I am thankful mother-in-law has been supportive,
while also trying to remain impartial to both sons.
We have had a really good support system between John's older brother and my family.
John's other brother will also be going no contact with Mike.
I may update in a year or so after the court cases have settled.
I was going to wait to post this in fear.
It might be recognized, but honestly, I don't care anymore.
I have documents for proof if a mod needs to reach out
and confirm this is not.
made up. And now let's get into some of the top comments. Someone says, I read all of this
including the original post. Mike sure went from the victim to the villain real quick.
And the OP responds and says, thanks. He definitely did. He's the type of person to throw anyone under
the bus instead of facing the consequences of his actions. And someone else says,
you know who I feel sorry for besides John
is this poor little boy
his mom is lying to him and his dad doesn't want him
and you and John were so relieved you wouldn't have as a kid
he didn't ask to be born any more than John asked to be our word
maybe the adults could stop being so self-absorbed
and somebody can get this kid help with this family
he's going to need it as much as John
and someone else says damn
everything just kept going left because WTF, I hope you and John can go to therapy and get all the help you need.
Honestly, would go no contact with mother-in-law after she told my husband to dismiss his R word.
I hate people who play both sides.
If my child was John, I would have disown Mike and Shelley.
And someone else says, that poor little kid.
toxic mom, deadbeat dad going to grow up to find out that because of his mom, everyone believed he was a R-word baby until the divorce,
and that's why his cousin and aunts and uncles are also distant with him.
Some people should not be allowed to have kids.
And the OPEE responds and says,
I don't want to be sneaky, but really hope my mother-in-law ends up watching him once in a while, so I can still see him.
It completely breaks my heart that he's the one that's going to be suffering the most.
and we have never received another update from the OP.
I 23 male unknowingly started e-dating my girlfriend 19 female when she was a minor and I was an adult.
Should this be a big deal, even though she is legal now?
Let me preface this by saying that I would appreciate you reading through the whole thing to get the context
because I feel, even though I was unknowingly in the wrong, most of the time,
these events transpired.
I want to know whether or not it would be wrong to forgive and forget.
I will try to sum it up in the next paragraph.
We met in a Discord server about five years ago,
which would make me 18 at the time, and she was 14.
For the first year, there was no talk of being in a relationship
since everyone there was mostly chatting in VC
about dumb stuff like anime and games
and we were a part of the more vocal crew in the server.
So age at that point really didn't matter.
No one really cared much for the other's age
as long as you were older than 13.
It was okay since you know it's a chill anime and games server.
The relationship would start around that time
that I was heading to college on the second year.
I no longer had as much time to play games
and spent my nights on Discord
so I deleted Discord to focus on getting an education
and a job.
A few of my online friends from there
asked for my number to keep in touch with me.
Most of the conversations fizzled out
within a few weeks, since there's only
so many times you can talk about anime and games
one-on-one with a friend from the internet
and only three people switched up with new topics
and evolved, mostly because they matured with me and brought more to the table.
I got even closer to these friends at the point where I even met up with two of them,
and we took a trip to Coachella in the Super Bowl,
and we still met up whenever there's an event all three of us want to go to.
I was even planning on moving closer to these guys,
since we all got along so well,
and one of them said he'd bum his dad for an internship for my field of work.
The last person I kept in touch with would be the girl,
Now, I will admit, one of the reasons I didn't want the relationship we had as friends to end
was because I had hoped that it could become more.
I sucked heavily at talking to girls at that point and went through high school without even dating one,
and Discord was pretty much the place I had any sort of conversation with someone who wasn't male.
A girl who said she was a year younger than me,
willingly coming to me to chat about games, was the closest I'd gotten to dating,
and I wasn't about to pass this opportunity up.
I mean, what else did I have?
And it was much better by the fact that we got along so well.
So over the years of chatting, we got to know each other a bit more as far as I knew
from what she told me than she was a year younger than me.
Even looked apart in FaceTimes and overall was a pretty cute girl that I had a lot in common with.
The impossible teen dream goal at that point was our first meetup would be a trip to
Japan as soon as we both had our degrees and were earning something decent and I guess those plans
seemed more and more impossible with the pandemic and stuff. The third year is also around the time
that we started putting an actual label on it and being exclusive. Yes, I'm a very lonely guy
on the internet. I took that stuff very seriously. Good morning face times, midday texts
and break time calls, calling her babe, princess, sweetie, bay. By and saying,
stuff off of each other's Amazon wish list for birthdays,
anniversaries, or just shits and gigs, and sleeping on FaceTime sometimes.
There were no shenanigans, though, I swear.
I mean, I was clueless on girls, but common sense taught me
that the easiest way to lose all hope of having a relationship on the internet
was to become a freaky idiot.
I was a bit chuffed to get a girlfriend,
even started working on my appearance a little,
hitting the gym, showering more than three times a week, shaving and getting haircuts.
Hell, I even outgrew my rational fear of approaching and cracking up conversations with girls in public spaces.
I actually changed the point where even my parents picked up on it.
I think most people would call that a glow-up, I guess.
I mean, every lonely dude who missed out on the high school dating scene can probably tell you,
it felt good to be loved.
Even if that love comes from a stranger, you've never seen outside of the screen.
I got out of college early and decided to finish my last year as soon as the pandemic settled
because the online learning thing was not working out for me.
My friend finally managed to hook me up with the internship, so I immediately flew to another state
and everything was going great.
I was even happy to learn that my e-girlfriend could become my in-real-life girlfriend
when I learned that she was just a half-hour drive away from where I lived.
I was pretty elated when I learned about it.
this but she was a bit down so I asked what's wrong. That's when she revealed that she was actually
19, not 22, which kind of bothered me for a second. It still eats me up a bit to think that
around the time we started e-dating, she was around 16 years old and I was 21 years old. It just sounds
bad and probably illegal. My feelings for her are still very strong and so far I don't even want
break up with her. Her line about her age would have bothered me back when she was still under 18,
but now that nothing is morally or legally wrong, and I just want to forgive her and get over it.
The guilt of it all mostly lies in me feeling a bit disgusted in myself for wanting to kick this
under the rug and forgetting it ever happened. I feel guilty because I don't feel bad that
everything that happened happened. Some part of me wants me to dump her, and this is not because
that she lied to me since I've forgiven her, but mostly because I want to forget that for around
two years, I was what most people would probably see as a predator. Would it really be as bad
as I think it would be to just forgive her and carry on living? She's still very excited to meet up
with me, and everything that happened still did happen. It probably took a lot for her to finally
let it all out and expose her own lies. She could have just abandoned it all and moved on,
but I'm guessing she wanted the elephant in the room out of the way before we'd inevitably met.
She even cried, which makes me feel that she regrets it.
I just want your opinions on whether or not it would be bad to forget the past,
since by all means at this point it doesn't really matter.
My biggest moral dilemma in it all is whether or not it's bad to even think it doesn't matter.
I mean, I feel like I should be feeling more disgusted in myself for thinking this isn't a big deal.
I would appreciate all of your views.
And then the OP makes an update that reads,
After reading through the comments and pondering a bit,
it's pretty clear that this is a relationship built on lies.
Seems I decided to ignore all that because I was afraid to lose someone
who's had a pretty significant impact on my life,
but a lie is a lie.
Girls who have approached me in the DMs saying they've done similar things in the past
seems to suggest that this is a terrible idea
and that it'd be better to break up with her,
and honestly I tried to pretend that's not an option
because of my feelings towards her.
It's me being childish and not taking her life seriously,
and perhaps that's to blame for this farce going on this long.
There probably were signs that were obviously I ignored.
Seems now the time to think is over,
and I decided to let her go.
I'm still hanging around because as far as all things go,
she's a pretty fun girl to be around,
whether she lied or not.
The good relationship we had,
even though it was built on lies,
is still a very good relationship
that made me break out of my own shell.
I've chosen to have a long talk with her
and put everything on the table,
expose every lie,
and find the reasoning behind it,
hopefully mend things,
and keep her around as a friend.
My pondering has led me to believe that
it wouldn't hurt to end things on a good note.
I just need her to think about it all
like I did and still have to do.
Once everything is out and we're still close after a few months, I might even meet up with her because I'm still looking forward to that.
Though I don't think I'm going to pursue anything close to a relationship in the near future.
Thank you, everyone, for sharing your opinions.
And now let's get into some of the top comments.
One user says, didn't she ever talk about milestones, events, graduating, prom, college search?
and someone replies and says,
that's what I can't get over.
Over five years,
surely he asked her how a day of college went,
how her exams were,
what dorm she was in,
and presumably she answered those questions,
probably lying daily.
I don't think I could get over that.
I think O.P. knows it,
but just fears he can't get another girlfriend,
so he's clinging to it.
And we have never received another update from the O.P.
And all right, guys, that wraps up some horrifying predator Reddit threads.
