Episode Date: November 24, 2017Meditation: Relax Into Happiness (2017-11-22) - Lama Gendun Rinpoche writes, "Happiness cannot be found through great effort and willpower, but it is already there, in relaxation and letting go." This... meditation turns us toward this naturally arising happiness by awakening awareness through the body, and then practicing "relaxing back," over and over, into the aliveness and presence that is always here.

A direct portal to a relaxed and open presence
is through the body, through waking up through the body.
So we often use the image of a smile
to bring a relax and awake quality of mindfulness
to our senses.
You might first visualize
a great curve of a smile
spreading through the sky,
imagining an open
sky filled with that
curve of a smile
and sense the vastness
and the receptivity of that
and imagine that your mind
could merge with that open sky
so the mind is filled with the curve of a smile
letting the smile spread
through the eyes so the outer corners of the eyes are lifted up a bit. The eyes can soften
and relax, smiling into the eyes, let the brow be smooth and feel the sensations of aliveness
in the region of the brow. You might sense the smile in the mouth a slight smile but a real
smile at the lips, the inside of the mouth smiling, the tongue relaxed, filling the palate,
feeling the sensations and the gums and the teeth,
energy of a smile spreading through the face.
You might visualize and feel a smile spreading through the throat
and feeling from the inside out the aliveness of energy in the throat area.
It might visualize and feel that you can smile into the heart,
letting a curve of a smile spread through the heart,
not to cover over anything but really to connect with the space that has room for the life
that's here like concentric circles widening let that space that heart space open outward and outward
so that the shoulders are free to relax back and down and you can begin to feel from the inside
out, the life in the shoulders.
You might notice tightness or knots.
See if you can let them just float in awareness, untangle, dissolve.
The hands relaxed, effortless and easy, resting on your thighs or touching each other.
You might explore softening the hands and then feeling the life inside the hands.
Can you feel tingling, vibrating, noticing what happens if you soften even more.
Again, sensing an openness to the chest, curve of a smile spreading through the heart,
through the chest area.
I'm feeling from the inside out the life that's there.
In a similar way you can visualize and feel the curve of a smile at the belly, loosening
and softening the belly, letting this next breath be received in a softening belly.
This one and now this one and again, letting the awareness fill the abdominal areas you
can feel from the inside out the energy, the life that's there, and letting the curve
of a smile, the visual and the kinesthetic, fill the pelvic region, relaxing open to
receive the sensations of aliveness. The curve of a smile right at the base of the spine is
if you're sitting and there's a vase that you're sitting on and the paroneum is contacting
the central point. You might imagine the whole earth, the energy around and beneath you
just filling up and pouring into you through this vase or curve of a smile.
You can open your attention and feel your whole body alive with sensation,
still sensing the smile at the mouth, the eyes,
and that fills the sky.
This whole field is filled with the benevolence and receptivity and aliveness of the smile.
What happens if you relax back and let go into that field of aliveness?
Just be that field of aliveness.
Mind will naturally get distracted when it does.
Just sense that's a flag or a possibility or an invitation to relax back again.
Perhaps sensing the smile.
Just letting go again into this aliveness of sensation.
sound, this field of presence,
and the pathway to happiness is this letting go into presence again and again,
just relaxing back into the reality of these changing sensations and sounds,
relaxing back into that wakefulness,
that luminous awareness that everything,
is happening in, gently letting go of thoughts, letting go of any effort or controlling, relaxing
back and letting be the life that's here. You might let yourself be guided by the words of
Lama Gendon Rimpichet. Happiness cannot be found through great effort and willpower, but it is
already there in relaxation and letting go.
Don't strain yourself.
There's nothing to do.
Let the game happen on its own, springing up and falling back without changing anything.
And all will vanish and reappear without end.
Waiting to grasp the ungraspable, you exhaust yourself in vain.
As soon as you relax this grasping, space is there.
As soon as you relax this grasping space is there.
Open, inviting, and comfortable.
Nothing to do, nothing to force, nothing to want.
Everything happens by itself.
Again, giving yourself that gift of relaxing back,
relaxing and releasing thoughts, relaxing through the body, letting go of habitual places of tightening
or tension, relaxing the heart, rest in natural and tender presence.
Happiness cannot be found through great effort and willpower, but it is already there
in relaxation and letting go.
Thank you.
