Welcome to the TechBrewrite Home for Wednesday, October 7th, 2026. I'm Brian McCullough today.
Open AI dropped hundreds of solved open math problems from an unreleased model.
HBO Max and Paramount Plus are going to become one streamer.
Apple's smart home push leaked, ring unveiled a dial-recharging lock,
and X-reel opened aura pre-orders.
Here's what you missed today in the world of tech.
OpenAI has released a range of new mathematical results produced by an internal model with details
like estimations of compute spent in terms of chat GPT pro usage, quoting the verge.
OpenAI has revealed solutions to a number of longstanding mathematics problems produced by an unreleased
frontier model in a batch of 722 manuscripts covering 372 result families that group-related papers.
It extends a run of breakthroughs that have both impressed and unsettled parts of the mathematical
community while raising questions about research ethics and academic conduct.
According to AGMAI, the newly formed independent advisory group of elite mathematicians put together to work on communicating the results responsibly, the release includes solutions to hundreds of open questions.
The results have been expected for weeks, although until now, Open AI had not provided details about which problems the model had solved or exactly when they would be published.
In September, the company said its model had resolved more than 100 longstanding open problems across most areas of mathematics.
The release papers and other details also include some summaries of the model's reasoning, estimates of the compute used, and stats about the number of problems attempted.
OpenAI claims the average result used the equivalent of three hours of chat GPT pro thinking.
AGMAI, or the advisory group on mathematics and artificial intelligence, published its first recommendations in late September, urging AI labs to release mathematical results promptly and through established academic channels.
where possible while disclosing details such as the name of the model used, prompts, and compute costs.
The group also implored AI companies to refrain from treating the release of mathematical results
as marketing vehicles to promote their models, a practice they said inflicts significant harm
on the mathematical community, end quote. And quoting the times. Like the Navier-Stokes solution,
the new mathematical solutions used a more advanced AI model that has not been released publicly.
Many of the proofs had been checked using lean, a computer language that verifies that underlying logic.
For 10 of the solutions, the company also provided summaries of how the AI model came up with its solution.
The average result took about three hours of computing, the company said.
Dan Roberts, the research lead at OpenAI said it was important to test the internal models to produce better tools,
and the proofs were a byproduct of that testing.
Tristian Buckmaster, a mathematician at New York University who was working on the Navier-Stokes'
that Open AI solved said it remained unclear whether mathematicians using AI models like the ones
from Open AI were inadvertently providing the information that allowed AI to beat them to the final
answer. There's likely to be a bunch of results where they take someone's work and then take it to
completion, Dr. Buckmaster said in an interview on Monday evening with so many results released
at once, I don't think they've done their sort of due diligence at all, he said.
mathematicians are struggling with whether the accelerated pace of solving math problems helps or hurts their field if understanding the solution lags behind.
I think at the heart of this issue is that humans have two competing natures, a tendency to compete and a capacity to appreciate beauty, said Kai Sheik, a graduate student in mathematics at the University of Toronto.
To me, this seems to be a case of the former attempting to strangle the latter, end quote.
There will be one less streaming service to choose from soon because HBO Max and Paramount Plus are about to merge.
Quoting the Verge.
HBO Max and Paramount Plus will become one streaming service under Paramount's $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
In a press release announcing the completion of the deal, Skydance, the name of the combined companies,
says both streamers will unify into a single service over time.
Skydance CEO David Ellison hinted at this possibility in March, saying, during a call with
investors that merging Paramount Plus and HBO Max would give the combined companies a little over
200 million direct to consumer subscribers. There are still no details about the timing of this change
or the name of the merged streamers, which HBO CEO KC. Blois will oversee. Merging the two
streamers could help them compete with Netflix, which last reported having 325 million
subscribers in January. The move will put top shows from both services onto a single platform,
including titles like Mobland, Yellowstone, the White Lotus, and House of the Dragon, end quote.
And quoting screen rant.
At the time of writing, no further details regarding an HBO Max and Paramount Plus merger on a single streaming service have been announced.
As such, it remains to be seen whether that would include the creation of a new streaming service to host both of their libraries, perhaps named after Skydance,
or if Paramount Plus could come to host HBO Max's library of movies and TV shows or vice versa.
That also means that a clear timeline for that streaming universe,
has yet to be confirmed. That said, given how Skydance mentioned it will happen over time,
the process could take at least months. HBO Max has many exciting projects set to be released
in October and the rest of the year among the theatrical titles releasing on the streaming
service this month are Sydney Sweeney's psychological thriller, The Homestead, and the Romcom
Anyone But You, Hugh Jackman's thriller, The Death of Robin Hood, Rami Malick's spy thriller,
The Amateur, Olivia Wilde, The Invite, and more. The Harry Potter reboots debutes
debut on HBO and HBO Max on December 25th is the streaming service's biggest release from now
until the end of 2026. Others include The Guilded Age Season 4, with the legal thriller War
having recently debuted. As for Paramount Plus's upcoming slate of releases in October,
the streaming service has TV shows like the new Avatar Animated Series, Avatar 7 Havens,
Sylvester Stallone's Tulsa King, Season 4, Michael C. Hall's Dexter Resurrection, season 2,
and more. When it comes to movies, Paramount Plus subscribers became able to stream.
titles like challengers, Dr. Sleep, the idea of you when Harry met Sally and more on October 1st.
The wait is now on for more information on how HBO Max's and Paramount Pluses libraries could combine,
and when that might happen if they do end up becoming a single streaming service as per the announcement, end quote.
We're expecting a whole bunch of smart home stuff soon from Apple to tie into their expected smart home hub.
Mark Garman says this will include a doorbell,
thermostat, a deadbolt, security cameras, and accessories developed with LG that will carry the
LG brand. Quoting Bloomberg. Apple has used this strategy before. It has discreetly worked with
companies like Foxcon, Belkin, and Logitech to develop products that sell under other brands.
This arrangement with so-called second-party suppliers gives Apple a way to quickly expand its
ecosystem without shouldering the full cost and complexity of producing and supporting a wide
range of accessories. Apple can also help shape the product's design, tailor their features, and oversee
engineering while keeping the work largely under wraps. Development of the LG accessories has lagged
behind Apple's own devices and the products aren't expected to reach consumers for at least a few more
months. Spokespeople for Apple and LG declined to comment. In recent weeks, LG has sought regulatory
approval for the devices, including with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and U.L.
Solutions, a product certification company. In many cases, the databases for both organizations
include filings that reveal product names, specifications, features, and drawings of the accessories.
That includes products labeled as the LG video doorbell wired, LG floodlight cam, LG outdoor cam plugin,
LG indoor cam plug-in, LG smart deadbolt lock, LG smart thermostat, and LG temperature sensor.
LG requested that photos and more precise details on the products remain confidential until early next year.
The filings don't mention Apple's involvement.
Many of the devices include support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
networks as well as thread and matter to smart home protocols embraced by Apple and its rivals
in recent years. The door lock also supports ultra-wideband, a feature that allows for
auto-unlocking when users approach their door. For Apple, the new home ecosystem and devices
will mark a formal reboot of HomeKit, a platform at launch in 2014 that has gained little
traction compared with offerings from Amazon and Google. Apple aims to use its smart home devices
and Siri AI assistant to breathe new life into the category.
The company is also planning its own additional offerings in the future,
including a privacy-centric home monitoring device,
a version of its smart home hub that attaches the screen to a robotic arm,
and an in-home security monitoring service, Bloomberg News has reported.
For LG, a company better known for TVs and washing machines,
the devices will mark its own smart home expansion.
The lineup represents its first indoor camera in nearly a decade,
as well as its first outdoor camera, thermostat, floodlight camera,
and doorbell in recent history.
The company is also selling its first smart lock outside of South Korea.
This would put Apple and LG in closer competition with Amazon's Ring and Google's Nest,
which are firmly entrenched in the smart home.
Each offering offers similar devices that let customers keep tabs on every corner of their house
and surrounding property.
Apple and LG have a long history once rivals in the smartphone space, Apple,
and some of LG electronics sister companies are critical partners.

If you're still basing your pricing on seats, it's time to rethink how you determine pricing
because of LLM and inference costs.
The cost of serving a customer now depends on how much they use your product, not just how many people use it.
And your product teams are shipping new features, models, and AI agents that a PACE legacy billing systems weren't designed for.
Charge B can help.
They provide metering, billing, and monetization infrastructure to support both seat-based and usage

with LG Electronics on integrating its services into LG TV sets, end quote.
Speaking of, Amazon's ring has unveiled the $249 ring smart lock, which uses a physical dial to recharge the battery when turned, set for a Q1-2020 launch, also five new cameras.
Quoting Bloomberg.
Amazon's ring brand unveiled its first smart lock with an innovative feature that addresses the dreaded scenario of arriving home to a dead battery.
The $249 ring smart lock will be available in the first quarter of 2020.
The company said Wednesday in a statement ahead of that release, Ring is also rolling out its latest wave of smart video cameras, including for new 4K models and a pan tilt camera that helps ensure customers don't miss a crucial vantage point when reviewing footage.
Ring is late to the smart lock category, which is dominated by Schlaga, August, Yale, and other brands.
Apple is also developing a smart lock through a partnership with LG Electronics to be sold under the South Korean company's brand.
Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
But in an interview, Ring found it.
Jamie Siminoff said that the company wanted to wait until it had solved for the common battery
anxiety that can result from using high-tech locks. For most current products, running out of power
requires a physical key or another backup method. Those batteries only need to be replaced once
or twice a year, but when it happens at an inopportune moment, the resulting frustration can
negate the convenience of using a smart lock in the first place. The fix that ring developed is a
physical dial that when turn, recharges the internal battery enough that electronic functions
like the built-in fingerprint reader and backlit keypad are restored. As a result, Ring smart lock
owners won't need to worry about fallback options like hiding a key somewhere near the door.
The lock can always be brought back to life with a few twists of the knob situated beneath
the keypad. The device can also be controlled remotely using the Ring app or Amazon's Alexa
assistant, which is already integrated with the company's range of doorbells and cameras. Users can
decide who gets access how they get it and when it expires, the company said in a statement,
those features are common among competitors. It's the dial that's a differentiator for Rings product.
As for the cameras, Rings latest lineup includes the $150 Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, the $200 Spotlight Cam 4K
Plus, $220 floodlight cam 4K plus, and $100 indoor cam 4K. The outdoor and spotlight cameras are
available in various configurations, including battery, plug-in, and solar depending on a customer's
needs with the former also offering hardwired and power over Ethernet options. Meanwhile, although the
$70 pan tilt indoor cam 2K provides a lower resolution video than the 4K models, it aims to make up for
that with a comprehensive view that delivers motion tracking along with 360 degree coverage and
175 degree tilt. It also has a physical privacy shutter that disables both the camera and the
microphone when closed, end quote.
Finally today, X-Reel has opened pre-orders for its Android XR-powered Aura glasses with a compute puck, starting at $1,279 for 12 gigabytes of memory and 256 gigabytes of storage in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and South Korea.
Quoting in Gadget.
The system uses the Snapdragon reality elite chip that Qualcomm designed to enable augmented and mixed reality capabilities in smaller and lighter headsets.
ORA features precise hand tracking thanks to its cameras and has a 70-degree field of view.
Its lenses are see-through, giving users a view of their surroundings outside what's projected on the virtual screen.
We found its visuals extremely sharp and bright, even in sunny outdoor conditions when we tested it at Google's developer conference.
For audio, it uses Bose engineered technologies.
In addition to providing compute power and Android XR experiences, the puck also has a built-in trackpad and fingerprint sensor,
so you can use it for navigation.
XREAL suggests carrying it on a lanyard
or clipping it to the user's clothes or belongings.
The glasses can also be plugged into a computer, however,
if people want to use them as an external monitor, end quote.
Meanwhile, Boone Ashworth at Wired got a hands-on with the aura,
and also Meta's recently announced VR glasses,
and he seems to have been generally impressed.
Quote, I tried both.
I attended a demo of the aura glasses,
which was deliberately held a day after Meta announced,
its VR glasses at MetaConnect.
My immediate takeaway was that these glasses are direct competitors
with very similar experiences.
Put on a pair and you can watch videos,
play games, or project a multi-monitor workplace setup.
Some of those experiences work better on one device or the other.
Neither Meta nor X-R's glasses can be mistaken
for regular everyday glasses.
Meta's futuristic frames fit like the front half of a VR headset.
The X-R frames are more glasses forward, chunky,
but nowhere near as thick as SNAP's specs.
both have attached wired compute pucks, the thing that houses all the memory and processing power
that you'll need to put in your pocket. On the meta VR glasses, the interactive experiences felt
smooth and fluid. The glasses can run all the services that already exist on meta's Quest devices
on a gorgeous 5K micro-Oled screen. They also have more cameras to point straight down at your lap,
so you should probably keep pants on when using these things. That enables hand-tracking
features that feel very precise. Typing sentences out on a virtual keyboard feels almost seamless. On
X-Real's glasses, it feels more like hunting and pecking. The X-Rora glasses generally feel less
polished. The glasses can run anything built in Android that works most of the time, but in my demo,
it also led to some apps not syncing right. Android is a huge platform and not everything will
adapt to mixed reality. What you can do in the aura much better than Meta's VR glasses is walk around.
The aura has lenses with real-world pass-through, meaning when you,
turn the screen off, it's like looking through a regular pair of glasses. Meta's VR glasses have
video pass through, which can look fuzzy. Ultimately, the meta VR glasses feel better for sitting
and experiencing content or typing something out, but the X-real aura adapts to the real world better,
or at least makes it easier to see what's in front of you while you're walking around, end quote.
Nothing more for you today. Talk to you tomorrow.
