Starting point is 00:00:04 Welcome to the TechBrewrite home for Thursday, August 20th, 20th, 206. I'm Brian McCullough today. Stripe made the OpenRouter deal official at $7.5 billion. Unitre's Shanghai debut popped 460% past a $50 billion market cap. YouTube dangled millions to keep creators off of Netflix. Slack introduced Slack code and finance turned AI agents loose on trading. Here's what you miss today in the world of tech. IT pros can't always be about fun and games until there's a fun game to actually play.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Today's sponsor Eaton created an online card-based game called Ace of Uptime, and the whole idea behind it is to give IT pros a sandbox. You can practice problem-solving and decision-making and have some fun in the process. Each level of the game, you go up against a familiar foe like old processes or silent system failures, your Delta scenario, you choose your solution, and then you see how your decisions play out. Will it resolve the problem? Will it escalate it faster than expected? Start playing and find out.
Starting point is 00:01:09 head over to Eaton.com slash ace to play Ace of Uptime. That's Eaton.com slash ace. It is official. Stripe is buying OpenRouter, but the final price ended up at $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion going to the startup's founders and $6 billion to its investors. Quoting the Times. OpenRouter had raised $164 million from investors, including Andreson Horowitz, Sequoia, and the investment arm of Alphabet, according to Pitchbook, which tracks funding. in May investors had valued the company at $1.3 billion. Together with OpenRouter will help businesses maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently, Patrick Collison, the chief executive of Stripe said in a statement.
Starting point is 00:01:51 On X, he called OpenRourter's product a truly delightful developer tool. OpenRouter, which is based in New York, was founded just three years ago. The $7.5 billion price tag for such a young company shows the importance of letting companies choose among different AI models. As businesses' use of AI takes off, the spending on AI tokens has skyrocketed. Stripe's payments software used by millions of companies already acts as a sort of router. The San Francisco company facilitates payments from its customers to their various vendors. As AI spending grows, open routers technology could allow Stripe to go beyond
Starting point is 00:02:23 simply sending payments to helping companies make purchasing decisions, end quote. Yeah, on the strategy angle here from Silicon angle, quote, tokens are the central currency for companies building with AI, and it's clear. that the real-world economic potential will depend on making good use of scarce compute resources, said Patrick Collison, Stripe's co-founder and chief executive. Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI and together with OpenRouter will help businesses maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Stripe has spent the past two years buying the plumbing underneath AI rather than betting on models themselves. Stripe announced a deal for usage-based billing company Metronome in December and closed it in January. Stablecoin infrastructure firm Bridge Ventures went for $1.1 billion in October 2024 and completed the following February. And Dresen Horowitz put in OpenRouter seed money and also co-led the company's Series A round as well. Martin Casado, a general partner there, called the combination inevitable. Tocons have become a new universal medium of value exchange, he wrote in a post on the firm's substack. Economic history does not throw those up often,
Starting point is 00:03:33 he argued. And on that reading, OpenRouter is already one of the most important. companies in the world for being the neutral way to route and clear it. The routing becomes the unsung enabler of the whole story Casado wrote, just like payments was for the previous era of the internet, end quote. Chinese humanoid robot maker Unitri saw its stock surge 460% in its Shanghai trading debut, giving it a greater than $50 billion market cap after it raised $904 million in its IPO, quoting Bloomberg. Embodied artificial intelligence is emerging as one of the most closely watched frontiers in the global AI race as Beijing steps up support for strategic technologies ranging from
Starting point is 00:04:19 semiconductors to humanoid robots. Unitri's offering is tapping into growing investor appetite for physical AI companies as attention shifts beyond foundation models and into real world AI applications. Unitry's debut surge signals strong appetite for China's embodied AI sector, said Ian Ma, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. IPO proceeds should accelerate AI development and commercialization. The strong listing may also provide a favorable valuation read across for Ubitec and other upcoming IPOs of other Chinese robotics rivals. In a sign of the demand, Unitri's retail order book exceeded the 7.07 trillion yuan of bids generated by memory chip giant CXMT Corp in its blockbuster offering last month. The mass production inflection point appears close. J.P. Morgan,
Starting point is 00:05:05 Chase and company analysts, including Tim Huang, wrote in a note, adding that the investment case for China's humanoid robot industry rests on accelerating commercialization, supply chain localization opportunities, and growing policy support. J.P. Morgan forecast's global humanoid robot shipments will rise to 60,000 this year and 1.75 million units by 2030 compared with 18,000 units in 2025. The bank sees China accounting for more than half of global demand. Unitary is among the companies that are expected to benefit if such growth materializes. The company shipped more than 5,500 humanoid robots last year, ranking first globally, according to its prospectus. Cumulative sales of its quadruped robots exceeded 33,000 units. Revenue surged to
Starting point is 00:05:49 1.7 billion yuan in 2025 and 393 million yuan a year earlier, while net profit reached 278 million yuan and gross margin exceeded 60%, end quote. But Unitri has been in the news for some other things this week, quoting Futurism.com. Unitary says that its new superhuman humanoid robot can run faster than any recorded human being. The Chinese robotics company revealed the new model on Monday, hyping up its athletic capabilities in a common marketing schick. In a 30-second video, the robot leaps around two meters into the air, which is well over the human standing jump record of 1.7 meters,
Starting point is 00:06:27 according to Guinness World Records. Then, sealing its Olympian credentials, the robot blazes down a track at a top speed of 12.66 meters per second. Unitary claims even Usain Bolt isn't that fast during his record setting 100 meter sprint in 2009 of 9.58 seconds, the Jamaican athlete reached a top speed of around 12.2 meters per second. This new machine has only been in development for a little over three months. The company boasted in a social media post with significant room for further improvement in the coming months. This year's World Humanoid Robot Games in Shanghai is set to kick off on August 22nd. Unitary absolutely swept last year's inaugural robot games, taking home four gold medals
Starting point is 00:07:07 for the 100-meter, 400-meter races and the 4-100-meter relay. It's not immediately clear if Unitary's superhuman bot represents a new line of humanoids or is only being purpose-built for this competition. Unitary, like many Chinese robotics companies, has relied on eye-catching stunts to improve its image. The robots are frequently shown doing martial arts and stunned the world with their acrobatic combat moves and a televised performance alongside human children performers, end quote. Yeah, I'm pretty sure these are the robots that I posted a video of doing martial arts at CES this past year. I do have a link to the video that this piece just mentioned in the show notes if you want to see what we're talking about. I guess they have noticed that Netflix is trying to
Starting point is 00:07:59 become them before anyone else notices. Bloomberg says that YouTube is offering top creators millions of dollars to post videos exclusively on YouTube for a period of time and will penalize those that post to Netflix concurrently. Quote, the payment would come in several different forms. YouTube has discussed directly financing some programs, and it is also offered to allot a portion of major brand deals to creators. Though YouTube hasn't finalized the deals with any creators, it is close to an agreement with several partners, said the people who declined to be identified because the negotiations
Starting point is 00:08:32 are sensitive and ongoing. Creators who do sign deals with Netflix face consequences, YouTube has said, according to the people. YouTube will be less likely to feature them in marketing campaigns or at events if they release videos on Netflix at the same time. YouTube would also exclude those creators from collecting a share of proceeds from some major brand campaigns. Netflix has been pursuing agreements with dozens of prominent YouTubers, paying creators such as Alan Chickens Chow and Nick D. Giovanni to post their videos on YouTube and Netflix concurrently. The company remains in active conversations with dozens of other creators, channels, and programs such as hot ones, a celebrity talk show. The Netflix deals appeal to creators because they are a way to get paid millions of additional dollars for videos they are already making and expose their programming to new viewers. Netflix has more than 325 million subscribers. Yet YouTube has told creators cross-posting on its platform and Netflix hers viewership on YouTube and conveys the idea that channels are deprioritizing the streaming platform as their primary distribution outlet.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Some creators have already decided not to work with Netflix. The service requires them to deliver videos days in advance, which is not how many creators operate. It has also asked creators to remove certain brand sponsorships from their videos. The line between the two sites has blurred in recent years. YouTube prioritized getting people to watch on TV and now accounts for more viewership on those devices than any other service. It has chased TV advertising dollars and taken the rights to major live events like the Academy
Starting point is 00:09:58 Awards and the National Football League. Netflix, which has long promoted its titles on YouTube, licensed the rights to popular shows like Cocoa Mellon and Ms. Rachel. It sees YouTube stars as a way to draw in younger viewers and boost the amount of time its users spend on Netflix. The competition has intensified over the past year, as Netflix has stepped up its pursuit of YouTube's most popular channels. YouTube has weighed whether or not to respond. Chief Executive Officer Neil Mohan has long said that creators who do deals with competitors, be they Instagram or Amazon Prime video, tend to drive viewers back to YouTube. Few of those creators are leaving YouTube, which is still their primary distribution
Starting point is 00:10:35 outlet. Funding any individual channel also risk aggravating the thousands of channels that don't get any cash. YouTube still doesn't want to serve as a studio for creators, which would involve funding and providing creative direction. But in recent weeks, Moen and his team have decided that the steady stream of creators now posting on YouTube and Netflix at the same time was a problem that needed to be addressed. It's harder to sell advertisers on the appeal and value of a video, on YouTube if it is also available on Netflix, end quote. Slack has launched Slack code, adding dedicated project-specific channels that let teams collaborate with AI coding agents like they are teammates
Starting point is 00:12:36 across all Slack plans. Quoting the verge, Slack is introduced. Slack is introduced. introducing dedicated channels where teams can vibe code together with AI agents instead of jumping between different tools and conversations. The Slack code launch includes open project-specific code channels with dedicated user tabs alongside features that compare coding changes and preview HTML output before the project is shipped. With Slack code, when you have an idea or need to build a new feature, update a web page or fix a bug, you simply tag in a coding agent like Anthropics Cloud or Cognitions Devon, and that agent then spins up a code channel to tackle the task, Slack said in its press release. There, everyone has full visibility to the
Starting point is 00:13:14 conversation, can audit code diffs, and get live previews of the agent's output, give feedback, and approve the work before it ships. The coding channels are designed to archive themselves automatically upon completion of their dedicated assignments and provide an audit log for record keeping. Slack is pitching this feature as an easy way to work collaboratively with AI agents like teammates, It's a mentality that SpaceX AI is also trying to sell people on with its new Grockbot agents. Slack code is available starting today on any Slack plan. It'll work with the AI agents available on Slack's marketplace. And Slack says that agents from its founding partners, including Claude Code, Devin, Versel, Agent, and GitHub, co-pilot will integrate seamlessly with code channels, end quote.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Mark my words, this will be table stakes everywhere soon, including on traditional finance sites. Binance has launched Agent OS, a platform that lets AI agents analyze markets and execute trades on users' behalf. Users get to set the limits on the AI agents' access and their trades, quoting TechCrunch. Called AgentOS, the platform lets developers connect AI applications and agents to Binance's financial infrastructure. It brings the exchanges existing tools and services such as Binance APIs, Binance Wallet, Agentic Hub, Binance X402 transaction verification and payment facilitator API and Binance Skill Hub, along with newly introduced support for its model context protocol or MCP. The platform also works with tools including OpenAIs chat GPT and Codex, Anthropics Cloud Code,
Starting point is 00:14:48 and cursor, allowing users to authorize agents to access market data, view account information, and execute trades. However, as the AI race moves away from chatbots that answer questions to agents capable of taking action, Binance is putting much of the responsibility for keeping them in check on users who ultimately have to decide what agents can access and trade and set limits on what they can do. Instead of total freedom, we put the power in users' hands to give them the granular access control of what they can do through the agent, said Jeff Lee, vice president of product at Binance, in an interview.
Starting point is 00:15:19 We put the control at the account level to protect the user's funds. Binance does that, primarily through dedicated sub-accounts, which users can assign to agents and configure for specific activities such as spot or futures trading. Withdrawals from those sub-accounts are blocked by default, Lee told TechCrunch, creating a sandbox around an agent's activity. Users can also choose whether an AI agent must seek approval for every order or can execute trades autonomously once its permissions are configured, a Binance representative said.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Binance does not impose a separate cap on how much an AI agent can trade or lose, so the amount a user transfers into the sub-account effectively serves as the limit. asked whether Binance can see what leads an agent to make a particular trade. Lee said the reasoning happens outside its systems, either on the user's computer or within their chosen AI application. We really cannot see the reasoning of what the user's action is, he said. Lee again pointed to the sub-account as the main line of defense when asked what would happen if an agent were manipulated through a prompt injection attack or otherwise compromised. Binance also said its existing security, risk control, and anti-money laundering policies
Starting point is 00:16:24 for sub-account APIs apply to Agent OS at. launch. Trading is just one of the first use cases Binance is targeting. Nonetheless, Lee said agents could monitor markets, conduct research and risk analysis, react to signals and autonomously place orders or execute strategies such as arbitrage. Agent OS is also designed to connect agents to payments and on-chain activity. Through Binance's X402 integration, agents can send and settle payments while its agentic wallet allows them to interact with tokens and decentralized finance protocols. Unlike exchange trading, where Binance does not impose a separate cap on how much an agent can trade or lose within its sub-account, agentic wallet
Starting point is 00:17:01 transactions carry Binance set daily limits. Regular swaps are capped at 50,000 a day. Defy transactions have a default $100,000 daily limit, and X402 payments are limited to $20 a day, according to the company. Lee said Agent OS was Binance's first step toward giving developers a platform to build AI-powered applications that can act across crypto and traditional markets. Binance is not alone in opening its infrastructure to AI agents. Rival crypto exchanges have been moving in the same direction using MCP and other developer tools to give AI applications direct access to market data and trading systems. In March, Cracken launched an open source command line tool with a built-in MCP server that allows AI agents to execute actions including Spot and Futures
Starting point is 00:17:42 trades. Coinbase followed in June with Coinbase for agents, which connects AI agents directly to users' accounts and allows them to trade, make payments, and execute other financial workflows within user-set limits. Similarly, OKX enabled, agentic trading on its platform by bringing an open source MCP toolkit earlier this year. End quote. So I have a family obligation all day tomorrow, and thus I'm going to be giving you a portfolio profile episode tomorrow. It's a startup that takes AI expertise to its logical conclusion.
Starting point is 00:18:25 Enjoy that, and I'll talk to you again on Monday.
