If there was a big rent button that would just demolish the internet,
I would smash that button with my forehead.
From the BBC, this is the interface.
the show that explores how tech is rewiring your week and your world.
This isn't about quarterly earnings or about tech reviews.
It's about what technology is actually doing to your work, your politics, your everyday life,
and all the bizarre ways people are using the internet.
Listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts.
Al, we've got to issue a swear warning because you are an absolute potty mouth.
Not another one.
And you need to remember that your grandma listens to.
for this. She does. She also abuses
me on social media. But don't worry, we
beep it out. See your kids can listen.
And Grandma Jean. Now I'm celebrating
for Crossy. That one was for Crossy. That was
a beautiful delivery. The wobble ball
again from Kate Cross and that is such an
important wicket. Kate Cross in
for the Hatrick Ball.
Oh, it's so wide.
Hello and welcome back to No Balls of Cricket
podcast with me Kate Cross and you Alex
Hartley. Hello, my darling.
Hello, we are no longer together
and in the studio. That last
long, didn't it?
Yeah, we managed to bash out two or three episodes together.
Yeah.
And we can't see them because we were in the fancy studio
and the videos weren't bloody working.
And now I'm in my pyjamas in Sri Lanka, getting ready for tea.
And this video I'll end up out.
I'm in a store cupboard at the minute at Old Trafford
because we're getting the dressery room's renovated
and everything's just been put in the umpire's room.
So here we are.
Yeah, you've just had to tell Jack Botherwick to shut up.
Yeah, Jack Botherwick.
and Luke Wells were just playing darts behind me, but they've gone now, so that's their appearance, Fegan.
Yeah, how are you, my dear?
Yeah, I'm okay, thanks, a little, a bit cold, a bit nippy.
It's February, it's finally February.
Finally, the longest month of the year has done.
Happy New Year, everyone.
Happy New Year.
No, but I'm good, thank you.
How are you? You're not in the country anymore.
Time differences.
Yeah, time differences.
We've done well today because producer Jack's actually really good with time.
differences. Well, you've taught me a secret hack. Oh, you've got it on. I've done it. So on your phone
for everyone that obviously can't see, because it's podcast. So for everyone that can't see, you can make
it show the time zone of a different country, but on your home screen. So now I know what time it is
where you are. And I know what time it is where you are because there's no point
of me having that if it wasn't for you because mum and dad are in this country as well. Yeah, perfect.
It's for the podcast. We've finally, after seven years, banned away.
to get it right.
But no cross it.
It's actually amazing how
the weather makes me just happier.
Yeah, you're smiling. You're actually grinning.
Yeah, it's warm, it's beautiful.
I have sat by the pool.
So for context, I'm in Colombo,
but I've come out early for a holiday.
Having said that I am just deep in my world cook notes right now,
but yeah, it's lovely.
I'm so glad I can.
really, it's so warm.
When does it all start?
Starts on the seventh, so that's Saturday.
Oh, that's soon.
I'm excited for this World Cup, you know?
Me too. I'm literally just going through,
I've just done my old man notes.
Oh, man, they were hard to do.
Oh, man.
Oh, man.
ESPN didn't know who one of the bowlers was,
and neither did I.
Ah, happens.
Yeah, so I was doing a deep dive into Odedra.
A lot's gone on, hasn't it?
in the build-up to this World Cup, which I don't really, I know we're not a podcast that talks
in great detail about cricket, but it really feels like even we can't ignore what's
gone on this week.
It has been wild, hasn't it?
And so much so we've actually got one of the men of the moment as a guest.
Yes.
But we didn't really talk about it in detail with him.
So for anybody that lives under a rock, Bangladesh have pulled out of the World Cup,
and Scotland have replaced Bangladesh, so they got a last-minute call-up.
and now it's just come out a couple of days ago
that Pakistan are going to play in the World Cup
but they're going to boycott the game against India
now they haven't hasn't been
it's third of Feb Tuesday 6pm here in Colombia
there hasn't been an update since they've said
they're going to boycott that game
I saw I don't know how true this is but I saw that
the rules and regs of the tournament hadn't actually
officially been put out yet so then
no one knows what the rules are for or forfeit
so the ICC could now just change it to be like
if you four
fit you team or the team gets 12 points.
Like they could make it anything at this stage.
So there's a lot of unknown, isn't there?
It's getting messy as well because obviously
as you see a governing body
so they have to be seen to be treating teams equally.
India bringing most of their revenue.
India get all the favourable fixtures.
You know, when they refuse to travel to Pakistan
they got to play in the UAE.
So it is all a bit of a mess.
So it's going to be really interesting to see what comes of it all.
Yeah, I've not followed it enough politically to know, but obviously the safety concerns from Bangladesh was why they pulled out, wasn't it?
They didn't feel safe to play their games in India, and they asked if they could move just to play the games in Sri Lanka, the ICC said no, but then that's been allowed for Pakistan.
So the integrity of the tournament straightaway already feels a little bit off the edge.
Yeah, so it's going to be interesting.
And do you think it's going to be one of them where whoever wins it is going to be like,
well, it was that World Cup that was just a bit of a shambles?
Depends if India win at home, isn't it?
Like, if India win at home, it'll all be very, very quickly forgotten.
But if somebody else wins, then, yeah, I think that will be an excuse.
And not an excuse, but it definitely will.
You know, we're four days out of a World Cup and it's like a Pakistan game against India.
Yeah.
What's happening?
What's going to happen?
Okay, so it starts on Saturday.
You're basing yourself in Sri Lanka for a majority of it, aren't you?
So we'll hear you on the radio.
Yes, yes, yes.
I'm very excited, actually.
I'm ready to get going now.
I've done everything.
And when is England's first game?
Do you know that?
No, that's Stephen Finn's job.
I take over England halfway through the tournament.
Okay.
I've not got there yet.
I am currently concentrating on what I do.
My schedule starts with Pakistan, Netherlands, on Saturday,
and then it goes Sri Lanka Island.
England come over to Sri Lanka after the group stages if they get through.
Good job we've got a very diligent producer, isn't it?
Because he's just come in and said,
England start their tournament Sunday morning, UK time against Nepal, 9.30am.
Okay, there you go. There you go.
We can cricket then, perfect.
Crossy, there's two, three games a day.
You are back-to-back cricket.
I'm going to be absolutely fine for the next few weeks then.
Yeah. So before we get our guest, I want to just, you know, put the record straight.
So for anyone that thinks, you know, I don't work when I'm calling these tricks because my social media is just always like the nice stuff.
In the first 11 days, I've got 10 games in a row.
How many are on the same day?
No, so no doubleheaders for us, which is good.
Oh, nice. Oh, that's good.
It's one game in Shalanker, one game in India.
Yeah, nice. Okay.
Well, that's good. It's good to know that you're earning the taxpayers' money.
moving on
I don't have anything
on my sticky note
so shall we
while we're talking
a little bit
about cricket
just introduce our guest
I actually think we should
because it's spicy
Crossy
I'm so happy to say
we've got a guest
we've got Mark Watt
from the Scotland team
who I can only imagine
Walser you've been
had a couple of days
yes
it's been a crazy week
it's been a very crazy week
but glad to be here
in Bangalore
and I'm now
just
finished training and training for World Cup.
Who would have thought?
Before we get into this, can we just talk about your podcast set up?
Because this is more professional than ours.
You've got the cricket, the Scotland thing in the background.
You've got all your photos and your logos up.
And you also look like you're about to start Call the Duty with your headphones on.
Yeah.
I think it looks like I'm about to start a fighter pilot or something.
Yeah.
Very professional.
This is not mine.
But it looks pretty good, doesn't it?
does it's very professional very professional
Mark when did you get the call to say
you're going to have to pack your bags
you might be going to a woke up
it was probably about
four days ago
no it wasn't it I was um
I think it was three days ago
we got the confirmation
so but the week leading up to that
it was just so many like screenshots of like
Bangladeshi journalists
and all these tweets
all the boys were just flying around saying like
is this true is this going to be happening
And I remember I called my dad
and I was like, oh, we might be going to the World Cup, I think.
And he was like, nah, these things always like sort themselves out.
And then two days later, he was trying to boot flights to Calcutta.
Oh, wow.
It's been a really crazy week.
But yeah, here we are.
Can you kind of put into perspective for us
because you actually, obviously, you didn't qualify back in July,
But then you didn't even finish in a position where you might be the next people to qualify
because Jersey were ahead of you.
So how is it, not necessarily how has it become you guys, but like how does it feel to,
I've had the disappointment back last summer.
And then now you're like, oh my God, we're on the eve of a World Cup.
Yeah.
Again, it's so civil.
I did a chat at a local cricket club at Clydesdale and they were saying,
oh, what are you going to do when they're all cups on?
I was like, I'm not even going to watch any games.
because I'm just still so gutted that we're not playing in it
and now here we are but yeah like you said
jersey beat us I think in that game we had to try and win by a certain margin
so we went out and played in a particular manner
but no we still lost the game and they finished above us so
yeah I can I can sense that the jersey cricket team would be a bit frustrated
but yeah I'm not complaining at all
you win so you lose so look at Jersey
Exactly.
When you obviously started seeing all the rumors about like, you know,
Bangladesh might not be going, you might be going, where are all the boys?
So what were you meant to be doing over the next month?
Because I can only imagine some of you would have been playing franchise cricket somewhere.
You've got one lab that's been at the end of the 19s World Cup.
But has everyone been dotted around everywhere?
Yeah, I mean, Leeski lives in Aberdeen.
He was shoveling snow as they were getting all these, like, calls.
we had a few sessions because we had nothing really planning the schedule till Namibia next month
we were just doing kind of like fitness stuff twice a week we're doing oh thank god you got out of that
we're doing we're doing boxing and then whilst we're boxing like in between sets we're like
so do you reckon like we're actually going to go and then obviously like the cricket Scotland staff
don't want to get our hopes up at all or anything like that and whatever they knew they kind of had to
keep confidential so um yeah it was just like not a lot of cricket was going on it was
other things and crossy's trying to build his house at the moment so he's doing all his
i follow that on instagram it's a really good follow for anyone that loves a renovation it's great
i mean to say it's a really good follow but no it's not actually it's but it's some some things are
interesting um so he's like stressed over there past like three four days trying to get other people
to go in and like sort of the stuff that he was going to do
do. Yeah, I mean, people who have kids as well trying to get them minded and...
Oh, God, yeah. What were your plans?
My plans, not an awful lot, to be honest. I was just kind of, yeah, not an awful lot.
I didn't really have anything. Got all my holidays and stuff out the way last year.
I came back from Nepal, then Nepal Premier League, so I was actually looking forward to a little bit of a break.
and then
but I'm very still happy to be
let me just see it
just get that in there
yeah
but no
everyone had different stuff going on
cricket was probably put
to the back of our heads
whilst the World Cup
would be going on anyway
and now here we are
yeah
I've just got already
the Netflix sign off
in my head
of like you guys
winning the World Cup
and then for future generations
are all going to be
not doing cricket
boxing in preparation for World Cuts because Scotland won it.
Exactly.
But no, everyone keeps saying Denmark in 1992
because they didn't qualify for the Football World Cup
and then I ended up winning it.
So anything's possible, but yeah, imagine that.
I really enjoyed the fact that like over the last couple of days,
so it's Saturday when we're recording this for a bit of context,
but there's been more and more cricket stories on your lad's social media
and less and less holiday stories.
It's been like
Plads run into the indoor net
like,
it's like,
it's like that scene
in the office
where it's like,
okay,
it's happening,
it's happening,
stay calm,
stay calm.
But no,
I must say like
Trigottskot
has done really well
to get,
just to organise
everything so quickly
and getting everyone
out to India so quickly
and we actually had
a frustrating session
yesterday and there's only seven of us.
I was going to ask
is everyone there?
Has everyone made it yet?
No.
We're coming like bit by bit.
Will you have a team for the first game?
In the warm up games, yeah, we should do.
If not, we've got physio on stamp,
I'd be third man going fine leg to fine leg.
Yeah, nice little debut for him.
I'm sure, I'm sure we'll be good for them.
So can you talk us through like logistics?
Because obviously to get to India, you need a visa.
ICC book the flights as well.
It's kind of out of probably cricket Scotland's control a little bit, isn't it?
but was the visa in a show or?
Yes.
Yeah, the visas can take, I think, anywhere from like two days to two weeks.
So I think the ICC, we're trying to get whoever's in charge of them to speed up the process a little bit.
So we actually booked flights without our visas coming through yet just to try and prepare them.
So if they come on the day the flight, you get on them.
My flight was cancelled at the first.
about half one in the afternoon.
And I was close to be leaving for the airport
like four o'clock.
And then I got on a flight two days
later.
And then I got my, it was like
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I got my golden ticket.
And I was like, oh, you need to get me back on the flight.
You need to get me back on the flight tonight.
I can go.
And then called the ICC then changed the ticket.
So then I was back on my original flight.
It was just mayhem.
And at least you living in Aberdeen
had to drive like two and a half hours to Edinburgh airport so he got his visa through at the same
time as me he called me I think he would have drove to India if he needed to I mean he would have
found a way yeah he would have went by boat or something but no it's been it's been a stressful
week um just not knowing and also that you're hearing all these different texts from so many
people around the world he's saying like oh you boys are going but you're trying not to get your
your hopes high.
You're trying to kind of stay level,
being like, nah, it can happen, it can happen,
and then suddenly it has.
So, yeah.
It's just so cool.
Yeah.

I mean it's unusual to get to a World Cup in the way you have
but it's also an amazing opportunity
but now you're there and you're in India
and you've done your first training session
is it a bit like what we're in India
yeah
so it's so bizarre
like we're all kind of at breakfast
and I was chatting with Jonesy
Michael Jones yesterday
and he was like
mate like we're at a roll cup
like I know it doesn't feel like it is it
and he's like no I know it's like
yeah we're featuring
in Rushin Khan and Nabi and stuff
in like two days in the project
and he was like yes
you've always been like
prepping hard and I was like
no I've just been doing boxing really
best win fresh
best one for exactly
that's the main of proof so
no we're all we're all just so excited
and so grateful that this
opportunities came about
but also kind of
feel sorry for Bangladesh on the other side as well
yeah well um have you got
plans now that you're there, is there like a plan of when everyone does arrive and you've got
everyone there? Is there going to be like a big chat about it or is it just going to be, we're
going to ride this wave or, you know, has there been any talk about how are you going to approach
this tournament? No. Well, obviously, yeah, but we're not really going to chat about anything other
than cricket if that makes sense. So I think it's just kind of right into game plans,
into kind of doing what we do. And yeah, we've got a few, if we're going to, I'm going to
have a few meetings before our first game.
And yeah, it's just, to be fair, we're just taking a day by day and see what happened.
See who turns up.
Yeah, see who rocks up.
So I had a bit of stress to it as well.
We were supposed to do this podcast an hour ago and you were at training and it was running
late and then you got blue lighted out of training to get back to the hotel for us.
So we've just added a little bit more stress and a bit uncertainty into it for you.
It's fine.
This has actually been the least stressful thing I've had this whole week, so it's all good.
But now, like, now that we're here, we've got, like, all, like, the, um,
anti-corruption and media stuff, like, all crammed into TV.
Oh, God, yeah.
Um, you guys know all about that is, it's a bit, um, can be a bit jarring, but, um,
nah, we're all good.
So, wasn't to be here.
Has you got all your kit?
Has it turned up?
Uh, they're wearing Bangladesh's.
For anyone that doesn't know, when you go to a World Cup, you have to have specific
World Cup kit. It's got the big, it's got the big name
across the front. You can't just wear the kit you wore
last summer, can you? You can't just wear cricket the Scotland
kit. You have to have specific World Cup kit.
So I'm guessing people are scrambling
behind the scenes to get that there for you as well.
To be fair, I think cricket Scotland and Greennecks
have done really well. I think
I don't want to like announce it here
but yeah, we've got
We've got kit. Go on.
We've got it. Give it an exclusive.
We've got some kit on the way.
I think we're wearing like our old kit for
the warm-up games.
yeah so fingers crossed as we speak someone's in a warehouse just writing on scotland on the front of the
of the old kid it's like what yeah it's just again i'm going to say this that cruego scone
have done an unbelievable job considering all the things it's just been done in like three or four
days it's been it's been pretty chaotic have you have you had time to look at your group do you even
know who's in your group yet i know who's in the group i have no idea
idea when every game is yet.
So I think that's actually quite a good thing that you don't have too long to actually
prepare for these games.
Sometimes you can kind of overplay them in your head and think too much about opposition.
And sometimes if you just go out there fresh, okay, he's bowling, doesn't really matter,
bang.
And then get into it that way.
I suppose you've still got quite a big leader.
So actually, I know it's all been a bit chaotic, but you've still got a decent amount of time
before you first walk up game.
Yeah.
I think it's just all those other things
that I mentioned before, getting all crammed in.
When you kind of want to actually just take a second
just to breathe and just think, right, okay,
we're here, let's actually, you know,
people are already talking about, oh, they've had no preparation,
it'll be no good.
Like, we're not thinking about that at all.
No.
We're thinking about, right, how can we use our time wisely
that we've got before the first game to actually get ourselves?
You're the underdogs now.
I know, I quite like it, yes
This is like one of those, it's like a simulation
that you go into an interview and they're like, right,
so you find out, you go into the World Cup in three days,
what's the plan go?
It's like one of the, like you can't really write it,
can you or prep for it?
It's crazy.
It is, but yeah, I mean, I do,
I've said these things happen,
but I kind of feel like they don't.
No, they don't.
But no, all the boys are just so happy
and so buzzing after the heartbreak
I was not qualifying.
I was going to say, do all those emotions that you felt in July,
I was like, oh, what a waste that was?
Not really, not really.
But it's honestly, the emotions over the past week of, like,
waiting for the confirmation because, you know, just, it was actually horrible.
I think I looked at my screen time on my phone for that week.
I think I was on my phone for like nine hours a day,
just like refresh into it, seeing what people are throwing.
We're looking on Skyscanner.
Yeah.
I'm just glad it's
happened and we're here
and yeah
here we are
I text George Munsey about a week ago saying
pack your kit chief he just said
cheers cheap and I was like no you meant to give me some gossip
it's like you meant to tell me
you're packing your bags on off
everyone's after the gossip at the moment is horrible
and yeah that's how I've got you on the podcast
I know you can't actually give it out because we didn't get
like having just everything that was on Twitter already
and then other people are taking
in the cricket world being like, yeah, pack your bags
and you're like, oh, I don't know where to believe you,
I don't want to get my hopes high.
Yeah, it's just being crazy.
Right, let's actually turn our attention to the World Cup now.
So you've got England, West Indies, Nepal and Italy in your group.
Obviously, there was a little bit of heartbreak
around the Italy situation last summer.
So who are you looking forward to playing the most?
Oh, there's got to be England, isn't it?
On Valentine's Day as well, how cute.
That's very romantic.
But I think someone told me, I don't know, you're going to have to fact-check this,
but I think we play England in the morning back home time,
and then they play in the Calcutta Cup rugby that same day.
Okay.
You're going to have to check that.
So you know that information, but you don't know your own fixtures.
Yeah, exactly.
Good.
It's good start.
It's because you're just getting ready to watch the rugby.
Oh, yeah.
our producer's just giving us the big thumbs up you've got it right that's true so yeah it could be
it could be a double victory for Scotland who'd think it but um no that's what that's what we're preparing
for and italy it's about you you can be like right no we are definitely better than you let's just
beat them oh yeah 100% I mean we we want to be saying that stuff about every team yeah but yeah
I think us and the Italians there's actually a lot of um a lot of chat going on with us and
Italians in the field.
Yeah, it kicks off a little.
I'm fighting talk.
Does it?
It does.
Maybe if you lose to them, you could take them on in a boxing match.
Oh, we'd be ready.
We'd be ready.
You'd be well ready, you guys.
They've got a few big guys, actually.
I don't know if you would, but.
No, I actually used to play with Wayne Manson at Derby.
And he was telling me about how he was trying to play.
What a man.
Oh, what a man.
He was telling me at the time that he was trying to play for Italy and stuff.
And I was like, oh, imagine one day we'd play a game.
against each other.
I think he was saying that, imagine we played against each other at the World Cup.
So there you go.
There would be interest.
I've still got absolutely no idea how to bolt him.
He's the king of playing against spin.
I'm really looking forward to this World Cup now.
It's kind of been on the horizon a little bit and obviously you guys haven't thought about it at all.
Personally, obviously I'm a bit like, got a bit of favouritism for the associates, but I just think the more the merrier.
And like, you see these international teams there, the, the,
test playing nations play against you so often.
It's kind of getting a little bit samey.
I think it's really refreshing when the associates come to play
against these big teams.
Obviously, sometimes the results don't go your way
and then people online say,
oh, they shouldn't be playing at this level, blah, blah, blah.
But it's the only way these teams
and ourselves are going to learn how to play
against the likes of Joff Raj
and people who can bowl 90 mile an hour.
You don't really face that often
in the associate game.
So it's a great learning curve,
but also we're there to,
we're not there just to learn,
we're there to beat teams.
Upset.
I love a World Cup upset.
There's nothing better
in the last World Cup
though when the USA beat Pakistan
and everyone went wild.
Yeah.
But it just shows like,
you guys can compete, yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
And I think it's frustrating
that we have to wait
until World Cups
for these things to happen.
but no it's exciting.
Whati, thank you so much for joining us.
Obviously you've got a lot to think about
and a lot of workshops to go and complete now,
so we won't get any way too much,
but thank you so much for coming on.
Nah, it's all good.
Thanks very much. Thanks very much.
And thanks for telling us what a chaotic week you bad.
That's all good.
Mark what?
What?
What about him?
Who?
What?
What?
How good?
How good?
that he's just been like, yeah, look, it's a bit chaotic.
How many times did he thank the Scottish board?
Cricket board, I know.
You kind of have to do though, don't you?
Because you know what?
Moments like this really go to show what people can do when they're under pressure.
And I think about the times that like kit orders haven't made it in time
and we've had to play in last season's kit for the first couple of games of the season.
You can do it.
You can absolutely do it.
Yeah, you can.
And they also pay his wages, so he's obviously going to say thank you.
Yeah, he's got to say thank you, hasn't he?
But it's a map story.
I'm still quite confused as to why Jersey haven't had the opportunity.
That hasn't become clear to me yet.
And I've tried to do research on that.
I still don't know why they leave from Scotland.
I got here and done some digging.
So I think it's come down to world ranking.
But then what's the point in the qualifications?
I know.
Jersey probably feel a hard done by and rightly they should but I think it's coming down to
world ranking.
I saw an interview that the head of Jersey cricket spoke and she said that she was so,
so humble and down to earth about me.
She's like, well just qualify on our own terms next time and like didn't say that anything
was bad or they were disappointed, obviously they were disappointing, but I just thought,
oh, you could have had your moment to get to a World Cup and it's gone.
I know it is
It is odd that one
But you know
Scotland
I feel for them
Because everyone's talking about them
No prep
Like get the excuses in
But actually just massive
Underdogs
I think sometimes that's best
Because you've not had time
To overthink anything
So they'll just go
And obviously
Form will be an issue
Because they've not
Played any cricket
But they've done the bleep test
Or whatever on Sunday
But I do feel like
He said
We were meant to have fitness
Testing
And then the coaches
said
We should probably net
Probably have a net
Probably have a net, yeah, so they had a net instead of doing fitness testing.
But if they get into any sort of fights, they're boxing, they're going to be ready for it.
They're going to be ready.
Well, it might tend to be a fifty fight this World Cup.
I know, it sounds a bit like it could be.
But good luck to Scotland.
I love an underdog story.
And like I said, I'm here for the Netflix documentary already if they were to win it.
Shall we do.
A shout out to the teams that have qualified for the Women's World Cup from the Qualifers.
Yes.
Yes, because it all came to fruition last week, didn't it, or a couple of days ago.
Netherlands, Ireland and Scotland.
It was down to the wire in that last game.
So if the USA had beaten Scotland in the final game,
then USA would have qualified.
But Scotland won.
And with Gabby Lewis out here as well
because her partner plays for Ireland.
And she was just like,
oh my God, I've been all the time for the World Cup.
How good.
How good.
I know what USA to then.
I was like, everybody did.
Yeah.
But again, everyone loves the underdog story,
so that's why.
But it makes, I think it's better for the tournament that Scotland have qualified.
Yeah, me too.
I feel sorry for likes because they've lost a lot of people.
Well, I was just thinking I went after ball at Catherine Bryce in the blast now, which is perfect.
Perfect.
Right, Crossy, I'm going to let you get back to training.
Get some research done, darling.
Yeah, I am currently doing Zimbabwe.
Nice.
Got a lot down there, Al.
Yeah, I just started.
You spell it right
